How To Leverage Your Blog Content

This post was most recently updated on February 23rd, 2014

donnamerrilltribeYour blog is the central hub of your internet presence and brand. As such, you need to spend quality time delivering quality information in your posts. But what is the best way to leverage your blog content?

Most of us write a blog, then send it out to all our social sites at the same time. Not the worst thing in the world to do, and it’s a method many of us have been taught. But using this syndication method does not necessarily maximize the leverage you should be getting from your blog content.

Let me give you an idea of how you could syndicate a bit differently to get more mileage out of your blogging efforts.

For argument sake I made this list starting on Monday, don’t take it verbatim, but whatever day you usually publish a blog post, start there.

Monday: Write your blog Post

Tuesday: Tweet your post

Wednesday: Put your post up on your Face Book Page

Thursday: Kick out your post to one or two of your other social sites.

Friday: Upload your post to Linked In.

Saturday: Tweet your post with a different title

Sunday: Take one of your more interesting comments and make it the subject of your Facebook status. You could say something like “In my last post, John Doe said bla bla bla about the subject I wrote about. What do you think about John’s opinion? I really would like to know. If you’d like to read more, click on my post and read my reply to John.”

I find that when we write our posts and syndicate them in all our social streams at the same time, our efforts look like spam or hype… a desperate attempt to get everybody to pay attention to what we just did. That might be convenient to do, but scheduling our syndication, and stretching it out over a period of time will tend to keep our content alive and fresh across all of our social sites.

In the long run, it will gain you more recognition and a sustained conversation. In other words, you will better leverage your blog content.

Here is your call to action:  Think about how you are going to leverage your blog and make your own system using these modalities.

Blessings,

Donna

Hey Donna, that’s a great idea. So many people are just concerned with getting their info out all over the place they don’t consider that people who follow them in one place quite likely will be connected with them in another place and if you just send everything all out at once they may either miss it all at that time or they may see it coming from all directions at once and think they’re being attacked! lol. Great idea!

      Thanks Hans

Yes, If it all comes at you at once, you can easily be “yesterdays news.”

You know how that can be ….here today and gone tomorrow. So keep reminding them through social platforms and you will stick in their minds.

      Thank you for coming by,

Hi Lynda, Posting every day would get a bit messy if you used this system. I would suggest that you stay on your DMO plan if it is working. If it isn’t, then I would stagger the times in the day that you send it out to the social links. Just remember that Twitter and Facebook disappear quickly.
I would Post them on my FB Page so it would stay longer.
No wonder why I can’t keep up with you! He He

THANK YOU, Donna. This is one of those ideas that when you see it, you think, “Why didn’t I think of that?” I don’t know, its just makes so much sense when its written down in a step by step fashion like this.

I ma one of those folks who writes and immediately promotes. Stretching it out over a period of time like you are suggesting is going to change the way I write and promote. And change much for the better, too. 🙂

Sometimes all it takes is a simple idea to make a hug lasting impact. Very cool.

Hi Donna, wow all these comments – congratulations! I have noticed how diligent you are with your syndication of other people’s content! That probably counts a lot more than the syndication of your own. Givers gain and you certainly prove that. Running a full-time job, a network marketing team and three young boys as well as being a partner really does restrict how much time I can spend online. That is my challenge that I am working on – what to do in the limited time I have but still be part of a community. BTW, besides TSA what other tribes do you belong to and why? I am seeking to expand my community involvement and you have certainly shown how to be a proactive community member!

    Thanks

Hi Clare, Yes, I do get a lot of comments, it’s part of that go giving thing he he.
As for your challenge: Lots of people have limited time and I find that if you do The Social Buzz Club would be a great place for you to syndicate. It is quicker and easy too. I’m part of it and it is a free or paid place to be. Here is the Link:

      http://www.on2url.com/app/adtrack.asp?MerchantID=163004&AdID=562247

Just copy and past it to your browser and it will take you there. I save lots of time with this gang. I love TSA but it does take a lot of time. This saves me more time, so check it out and see what I mean.

Hi Donna! As always..you give me much to think about. I hadn’t considered stretching out my syndication over an entire week as you have spelled out. I’m constantly circling back through all of my posts via social media, but your strategy really keeps them alive a whole lot longer. Thank you!

  8. Yorinda April 24, 2012 at 8:59 am #

Thank you, Donna, for the great suggestions.

I never thought that syndicating a post to all the sites on the same day would be perceived as spam, since it is going to different sites.

Maybe, since we have a group of friends/people that are on all of the sites
that they would see it that way.

This makes me think that I may consider your scheduling ‘routine’.

    Much appreciated.

Hi Yorinda, It is not so much “spam” – but the point is that syndicating it all at once can get lost in that big fast stream on the social sites.
Leveraging it will capture people’s attention so they won’t miss it.

I am glad you liked the idea. I don’t like to tweet with automation. I like to put the via…. in the middle of the tweet. Stats say it is a better way for people to click on it, instead of a re-tweet. So I shift the words around a bit.

It does kind of look spammy. I agree unfortunately I thank the lord for these tools that do that because they save so much more time. I mostly syndicate to the 150 groups I am in on FB because it is just way to much to post individually and believe me I used to lol. Thanks Donna for sharing your thoughts with us!!

Hi April, Great seeing you again. I would have to use automatic tools if I had to syndicate 150 groups also. It all depends were we are and how much we take in.
In your case, it would be impossible to do this all by yourself. It does get difficult at times.

    Hi Donna,

You are so right about leveraging your blog content by sharing it over the course of a week. I think it really extends the life of your posts and allows you to reach different audiences at different times. I also have connected with other bloggers in my niche who host blog carnivals where we link up our posts and share them on our networks. It’s a great way to expose your posts to their audience and share their posts with your audience along with providing great quality content to help everyone.
Thanks for the insights and suggestions!

    Donna,

This is quality insight here! Well Done!

I never thought about self promotions much until this last week when I was doing some spring cleaning on my blog. I have to answer thousands of comments. All by reading each comment and then responding. Some are left by those who are just spamming links and they do not get published. Yet, I do respond to them in a personal email on my business email system.

However, Donna, I did use the method some what you have proposed. I just pinged, LinkedIn, and others my different old post that I had to catchup with responses.

I did make it seem like allot of links being sent to my tweet and other locations. That is just me being unique.

I feel what ever works for you to get your message across is OK.

I will never do that again. I just like to respond to the people who visit my site personally and allow them to share if they like to. Then I will share each new post on LinkedIn and one more location that I have a huge following. You always should ping and Digg your new post only once.

Donna, I really like this article and got many new ideas to spread to all my group members. I believe I will just share this article and allow them to gather the feeling of being awakened as I just did.

Thanks for sharing this useful information. I love learning something new everyday and you make it simple.

Yes, I too have to do some spring cleaning on my blog also. As for self promotions, it is so important to keep it fresh and alive for our followers. We put so much work into our blogs to share information, that we don’t want our followers to see. I find that staggering my posts on Social Media does reach more than pressing all the buttons at once.

    Hi Donna,
Wonderful ideas you’ve presented here in this post. I do something similar and I like to add Google+ in the mix too. I have a little twist that that I add to this where I look at my stats and find an old blog post that is getting a lot of organic traffic from search. I know that most of my friends and followers have forgotten about the post because it was done so long ago. I’ll edit the post to be sure to include a link to a newer post (in most cases I’ll take out another link to an older post) and then I’ll use a routine similar to the one you laid out. I just started using this routine recently and I’ll keep you posted on the results. Thanks for the encouragement and I love the sharing of ideas to keep those creative juices flowing! Thanks Donna, I’ll be sure to share this one.

Great ideas Donna! Do you mind if I add one? A couple of months ago I selected several blog posts and created an eBook – I expanded on them so it would flow nicely and created a good cover. Then I uploaded it to Free eBooks – in less than 2 months that little eBook was downloaded 2,000 times (!) and added to 100 librarys by the VIP members and got 5* reviews! Of course the book included links to my blog and my social media accounts. That was well worth the bit of effort it took me to compile the information. As an added bonus, they’ve just introduced ad sharing so not only do you get exposure but 100% of any ad revenues. It was such a great test run, I just took that book out of circulation and I’m going to revamp it again and introduce it on Amazon – and uploaded a new book to the free site yesterday. Sorry this is so long, but as you can tell I’m a real fan of this way to make the most of our content!

All you have to do is find one thing that interests you, a blog, an article, anything that pertains to what you are doing in your business and just link it with a comment. Interesting post. I never thought about doing (1) post in that way. I think it helps get your readers a break and you’re not overwhelming with notifications about a new post. I worry about that myself because all read so many blogs daily.

The other day I heard an interview with Adrienne Smith and she said how she comments on 5 blogs a day and other ideas to help get the most of out her posts. It was an excellent idea, but this one I might implement myself as an experiment. Thanks for sharing this with us Donna!

Hi Sonia You are absolutely correct in saying you don’t want to overwhelm your readers with notifications all at once. When staggering it, many of our followers are on all our social sites. They may not receive the notification of your blog if you blast it out all at once. You have a better chance of your readers connecting with you when you stagger. Try it, you will probably like it.

I read Adrienne Smith’s interview and she does such a great job in commenting on blogs. It is much to her success because from her comments, people start following her. (I think I wrote a blog post about this a while ago…how important it is to give a good comment) Try that too. I do the same thing, at least 5 a day.
      Cheers,

    Donna,

    This is a great strategy!

I think that many people kind of scratch their heads when they hear the word “syndication.” lol All these kinds of niche terms and buzz words tend to get sideways glances from folks and the general knee-jerk reaction is something along the lines of “Eh, sounds like a lot of stuff to learn and do!”

And you just simplified it down to such an easy thing to do, Donna!

I think that it’s smart to always look for ways to get max mileage out of our work! The things we do online are literally permanent billboards, so we should try to go back and circulate (or re-circulate) our blog posts to attract new eyeballs!

Thanks for sharing the truth and power of simple focused tasks over time! I think this action plan is one that is very effective and that anyone can do it!

TGIF, Donna!! Hope you’re enjoying it to the max!! 😀

Hi Laura, Posting a blog every day is great, but maybe try to syndicate it throughout the day and not all at once. It’s a good strategy not to blast it out at once because it can be missed by some people. Try it and let me know what you think.

    Hi Donna,

I’m one of those that write the post then send the message and link out on the same day.

I can see what you’re saying here though and it does make sense to spread them out a bit.

I have a think about this and may try in my next post.

Thanks Donna, have a great weekend.

Hey Barry I did it that way for years, then after playing around, I noticed that it was more effective. At first I was apprehensive because it was yet another thing to do. But..putting it on my DMO made it easy. Just pressing a button here and there during the week had lead to an increase in followers.
It worked for me and when something does, I love sharing it.

Hi and welcome to my blog Richie. If you are writing every day, this might get a bit confusing. In your case, if you are doing this solo, try to syndicate it at a different time of the day.
Maybe it’s time for an assistant or a VA to do it for you! As we grow and gain more responsibilities, we need to seek all the help we can.
You can give it a try if you put it on your Daily Motion of Operation (DMO) I’m interested how it will work for you.

    Hello Donna

Scheduling our syndication, and stretching it out over a period of time will tend to keep our content alive and fresh across all of our social sites. Your simple but powerful idea is in line with this proverb, “If you do not see someone or something frequently, you will forget about” Taking one of your more interesting comments and making it the subject of your Facebook status is really a great way be visible and add value to the blog post.

    Thanks

Great idea, I agree that a lot of repetition can seem spammy. I publish 3 days a week on my blog so I try to get them out pretty quickly but I also do spread them out over a few days and always post at different times, so I’m not spewing out the same thing to every social channel at the same time. I also think it’s a great idea to switch up the way you present a post.

For one thing, you have different audiences in different places so I speak a bit differently to people on Twitter vs people on Facebook. Plus you have different character limits and presentations. On Twitter its short-n-sweet. On Facebook you can be a bit more conversational and on Pinterest a bit more visual. It’s definitely important to have a plan and not just write and publish “whenever”. Schedules are our friend!

I especially like the idea of sharing comments! That gives another person recognition, too, and shows appreciation for their contribution. I like this so much I’m going to work on doing more of it!

Spot on Carol Lyn, I wish I could blog three times a week! But having a plan and sticking to it is so important.
Yes, I agree that there are many different platforms we need to present ourselves differently. Twitter short and sweet and I love the Pinterest platform where it’s all visual.

Thank you for your contribution to this post.

      Thanks,

Am I a geek because I have a sheet with all my posts and where I have syndicated them?? Haha – actually I’m not a geek, it’s just that with very limited time and more than one blog post a week, I have to remember where I have posted what!!

It is actually a much more natural way of building the backlinks too and these days the more natural the better!

Great post and will comment today and share tomorrow, then tweet the next day and FB share the next ….. (joke! 😉 )

Nicky, you make me laugh! Actually I use “evernote” as a program that I can put in my list of blogs that I’ve commented on. As you know, some tribes have the same people on it and it does get a bit confusing.

I go through each of them day by day. The more scheduled I am the more I save time. I usually have a certain amount I syndicate each week, but take it day by day.

I’ll post this tomorrow (ha ha ha)

Well that is a great way to do that Donna. What if we write more than one blog post a week? How would you suggest setting that up?

Like I’m a part of Triberr so as soon as your post goes live, it’s loaded up in the stream. Everyone then can approve those posts to be tweeted. Should I delay my approvals and not tweet everyone’s content on the day it goes live just so they’ll have their posts shared a day or so after the fact?

I can see the benefit of doing it this way. Really great suggestion, thanks so much for that. The bells are going off in my head now.

Great tips Donna, thank you so much.

Hi Adrienne, If we are blogging more than once a week, the same applies, in a rotation system. I know it sounds confusing, but if we have is as part of our daily routine, it can be set up on our “roster”

As for syndicating someone else’s blog, I would do all the syndication at once. This pertains for your blog post.

We usually put it up, and send it out to all our social media sites all at once, but staggering our own blog can be beneficial.

Don’t let those bells go off to loud lol

    Hi Donna!

One idea I want to contribute here is to make the blog post more interesting and presentable. I know it is not directly related to this but help popularize your content. One thing I did is wrote my blog post in a diary and took the image of the blog post from the diary so that it is readable and uploaded the blog post in the form of image. What do you think about this idea?

How did I learn this? The hard way! I was doing it all at once for convenience sake, then turned to this model and actually seen more of an influx in my business.

Create video on the same topic and syndicate it to video sharing sites…you can also put the video in the post and post another video on youtube as a snippet of the total video. If your posts are really meaty, you could even start podcasting, not that I have done that but others swear by it.

I think it is easy to spread it out all over the place at one time, as I was doing so in the past, but found better results doing it this way.
