Why Is Building Relationships Super Important?

This post was most recently updated on February 22nd, 2014

Adrienne Smith Guest PostThis week I am honored to have Adrienne Smith as my Guest Blogger.

Adrienne and I met on Facebook.  Since then, we have learned so much from one another.  If there is one thing I respect, it is a blogger who gives great content and also leaves incredible comments on blogs.  That is Adrienne.   She is fun, upbeat, has a great sense of humor and has a blog I visit each week!  I just love her and wanted to share her insights with you.

So take it away Adrienne…. (Here is Adrienne’s Guest Blog Post):

When it comes to social media, Donna is definitely someone you should listen to for advice. She has really built up a great following and has even built relationships with some of the top names in social media. She is a very successful coach and is doing extremely well.

I met Donna through a group on Facebook and I knew from the start she was someone I could learn from. So I sent her a message and asked if we could have a conversation on the phone. I just wanted to get to know who Donna is and there are some things you can’t learn about someone just from reading their content alone.

So why is building relationships super important?

For starters, had I not built that relationship with Donna then I wouldn’t be here! She invited me to write a guest post and told me I could blog about anything I wanted to share. Since relationship marketing seems to be an area I’ve excelled in, I thought I would share with you why building relationships is super important.

The Advice I Didn’t Take

I’ve been online now for several years and in those early days I honestly had no clue what I was doing. I didn’t know which direction I wanted to take, I didn’t know who to listen to and I had a difficult time finding information I could understand.

Those early days were no fun at all.

One thing that I do remember is the advice that I should just be myself. I have absolutely no problem doing that in my real life but I was so intimidated by people when I came online.

Every site I visited, every blog post I read, I just knew these people knew so much more than I did. I was extremely uncomfortable just being myself.

Want to know why?

I didn’t understand 70% of what other writers shared, so I thought I would sound dumb asking so many questions. I thought I needed to have more knowledge under my belt before jumping into conversations, which is why I never participated in any groups online or commented on any blogs.

What Changed All That?

I purchased a course toward the end of 2010 and I promised myself that I would do everything it taught me to do, even if it was outside my comfort zone.

Trust me, most of it was.

One of those “uncomfortable” things was commenting on other blogs. This was an area I found difficult because every blog post I had read up to this point, I just knew these people were so knowledgeable. I thought I would sound ridiculous and stupid. But you know what? I did it anyway.

I just shared my own experience of what I had learned, or things I had done related to what they had shared. After about the third month of visiting other blogs consistently every day and leaving a genuine comment in my own voice, I started getting more traffic to my blog.

Know what else started happening?

I started getting a lot of comments on my posts and they appreciated what I had shared. I was surprised, delighted, excited and downright blown away.

Building Relationships

The next thing that started happening is that because I ask a lot of questions in my posts, people started interacting more in the comment section and then I started receiving personal emails with more questions.

Because I took the time to connect with these people (I even spoke with some of them on the phone or Skype), they saw me as a real person who cared about them and their progress.

As time went by, I continued to get more and more traffic to my blog and comments on my posts.

This started leading to people wanting to interview me. I’ve been invited to write several guest posts on numerous blogs and some are big names. I’ve been invited to join large tribes on Triberr and private groups on Facebook.

I’ve been asked to promote other people’s products and have even been asked to partner with a few.

None of this would have been possible had I not started building those relationships. And it all starts right on your very own blog.

My Advice To You

Be yourself in your posts.  Share some of your own experiences in your own words.  Ask questions that will get conversations started in the comment section.  Don’t forget this: Always respond to every comment left on your blog.

If you think it’s not worth your time, think again.

Everyone online is their own person and we are all unique in our own way. Not everyone is going to connect with everyone and that’s okay. Life wouldn’t be very much fun if we all thought the same way, acted in precisely the same manner, and if we all shared the exact same information.

Speak in your own voice.  You will attract those people to you that you’re supposed to.

Start building a relationship with them on your blog, seek them out on Facebook and start a conversation and follow them on Twitter.  Share their content and help them to get what they want… it will definitely come back to you.

What Do You Think?

As I had mentioned, I like to ask questions in my posts, so now it’s your turn. I would love to hear your thoughts on what I shared.

Were you, or are you now, confused and lacking in confidence like I was when I first started? Are you just starting and not sure where to begin? Do some of these bloggers intimidate you too?

All of your comments are welcome and I promise to stick around Donna’s place for a while and reply to them all.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts, and if you have any questions, just ask away. I’m eager to hear your story.

Thanks Donna and Adrienne, this is great advice. I think the best advice you can give anyone in any situation, whether it be online networking, your job, your friendships and relationships, or anything else is to be yourself.Adrienne, I seem to be quite the opposite as you. In person I am a very quiet and reserved person. Not really shy, just quiet. But, when I discovered blogging I realized I could say whatever I wanted, without distractions or interruptions. And it was a very freeing experience for me.I love to comment on other peoples blogs, I love to hear how they will respond to what I have to say. I like it almost as much as receiving and responding to comments on my own blog.Networking and building relationships is CRITICAL for successful blogging. So thanks for sharing your experience, and wisdom with this subject. This is a great post that many people can learn from, I look forward to checking in with both of your blogs again. Hope you both have a terrific day… And Happy Holidays to all.

Thank you Jon for visiting this post.

I do believe relationship building is important so people can get to know and trust you. It can be on your blog, social sites and even your emails that you send to your list.

Lately I have been writing more emails than blogs lol!

      Hi Jon,

Why thank you so much for stopping by and checking out this post here at Donna’s place.

I love that the blogging world has brought you out of your shell Jon. That’s awesome and isn’t it the coolest experience to meet so many wonderful people that we would never have had the opportunity to come across had it not been for this platform?

Look at all the connections you’re making and the experiences you’re now having. I love that you were the opposite from me but trust me, I’m so out of my shell now it’s not even funny. Thank goodness right!

Thank you Jon for your awesome comment, I really do appreciate it. I look forward to stopping by your place and checking out what you have to share.

      Now enjoy your day!

Donna, great find with Adrienne who has captured the whole understanding of what is important today in our industry globally.

We are to tell our own stories of courage and empowering moments. Being yourself is being transparent. I want to look in the mirror and be who I am there and at meeting at the V.F.W Post 1758 when I am the Vice Commander.

I love to support people all my many years in business without excepting anything in return. That made it easy for me to build real lifetime relationships bonded with hope. That is the way my group operates for over 32 years and growing.

In the beginning people use to be upset with taking the time to build a solid foundation together. This would take normally one quarter and then another month for coaching on navigation. Yet, it never fails that the relationship built gets so strong it just empowers others to want the same. It is done over and over again with each new member. This makes all of us realize that loving others truly and giving them all you have in support, hands on. That is great with having a new passionate friend to standby. It just makes me warm all over.

It is the way life is built for all of us. Loving people and caring about their overall well-being. That is priceless and I love doing it daily.

Thank you Donna for such a find and giving me more light to see! Adrienne you have a new person who will seek out your wisdom in the near future. That is what we love, usable content.

      Hi William,

Thank you so much for this wonderful compliment. I really appreciate it.

I agree with you William that most people are very impatient when they come online so building relationships isn’t something they want to take the time to actually do. If they would though they would see the huge benefit it can be so I have to admit that it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done but I also just like people.

I appreciate your comment so thank you so much. Please do stop by my blog any time and I hope you’ll enjoy some of the content I share over there.

Enjoy your week and thanks again.

Being yourself can be so scary for anyone starting out. I went through that and it took me a long time to find me. Where I started to pick up and finally get things right was networking. I had no idea how important it would be to my business and myself.

What I always love about your posts is that I feel as if we are on the phone chatting and I sit back and laugh sometimes. That is how you come across and I love it. You offered some great advice I wish I read years ago when I tried to again and again to get it right. The best part is that I never gave up. Thanks Adrienne!

Wow, you too Sonia? I’ve heard a few people tell me they didn’t have an issue with that but I think a lot of us definitely did. I mean we’re talking a whole heck of a lot of people who may look at you as what you’re sharing is crap. I think when you’re starting out and you don’t know that much we’re quite intimidated by it all.

The networking part is the most fun for me. I love people period so getting to know them is enjoyable for me. Plus along the way I get to help them out too.

Thank you for sharing that Sonia and I’m so happy that my posts give you that feeling. That’s how I want to come across like I’m speaking to my good friends and just sharing with them what I know and trust me, I’m not perfect at it either.

I think all we can say is better late then never because I wish I’d had this information myself.

I appreciate you Sonia and thank you so much for your comment. It means the world.

      Enjoy your day!

I think that some business owners, including myself sometimes, forget that marketing is all about building relationships with your niche clients. This is especially true if our business focus is on helping other people through our service. All of the marketing messages need to be about our niche clients; not about self. It is all about them!

      Hi Rachel,

You are right Rachel, most businesses totally ignore the fact that it’s all about relationships online. What’s the best form or marketing? Word of mouth of course so when you concentrate more on those relationships you’ll benefit so much more in the long run.

Thanks for your comment, I really appreciate that.

        Absolutely Rachel.

We need to write for others. I have created an “avatar” What I did was make a list of someone who is coming into the internet marketing world. I wrote down everything she wanted to learn. I even wrote down that she was a single mom, trying to stay home with her children while making money at home.

Then I created an image. I dressed her up from head to toe. I keep that image close by when I get “stuck” and wonder what to write to help her.

        That’s my little trick!

Oh wait… Lemme check… is it Adrienne? Oh yeah, she’s here. Glad to see Adrienne on Donna’s place. Two favorites rocking 😉 You both are great personalities and I met Donna through Adrienne. Relationships here and there. So building relationships are “super important” ~ I love that part.

It’s not a wonder and whenever I see conversations, hear recordings and watch videos, she always reminds to “Be Yourself”. I don’t know but Adrienne is superb in creating relationships and proved it as Donna is great in building online presence. (I Still remember guest post at Adrienne’s place Donna ;))

Okay… I’m talking much… Being myself, okies? 😉 It’s always nice to learn from experiences Adrienne. And one thing is setting as an example. When you do what you say and when others see how successful you are, no matter what they believe you. ‘Cause you did it. I see that quality in you both.

Leaving constructive comments is one chapter of this story. Right? Adrienne shared her secrets lately and tweeting other posts, asking questions and what she does to build relationships. Donna shared effective ways to blogging such as using real profile picture, having a great about me page and all. I did ask questions there, so I’m with no questions for now. Yet I’m filled with ideas to be effective in blogging and build relationships. So don’t worry I ll ask questions when I’m done with current ideas I’ve got. Else just bunch of ideas not worthy if they are not being performed. No? 🙂

So you want me to be myself and this comment gonna be long ok? Are you ready? 😉 When I start out my blog I just never thought of comments. Even I didn’t have a Twitter or Facebook pages. I just share info. No promotions and fear to show off my real picture. But later another blogger told me about having a real profile picture and so I changed it. Also I didn’t know how authors write this much and had no idea about writing comments. I did write comments after reading but few words of appreciation. I thought that’s enough. But now I know what matters and my comments are longer than my posts. I better create an ebook with my comments. good idea. no? 😉 Now I just follow my little heart and use my own brain while taking advices from awesome bloggies I believe who are ethical and good at what they saying and doing.

Thanks to Donna for bringing Adrienne here 🙂 And sorry if my long comments are irritating 😀 I can’t help it. You both have a wonderful week !

    Cheers…

      Hi Mayura,

Nice to see you here and glad you are now enjoying Donna’s blog. She does have lots of great stuff to share when it comes to social media.

Being yourself is the only way to be Mayura. It will come across to others how genuine you are and if you are really here for the right reasons. People can see through those who are fake so it’s really not worth it. I’m happy to hear that you are just being you because that’s the person everyone will be able to connect to.

Glad to hear that you are saying what you want in the comment section Mayura. I think if you have a lot to say then say it. If not then that’s okay too. I think the blog owner should just appreciate that you took the time to read their posts and share your thoughts. So you just jab away any time you want.

Thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for your ongoing support of the both of us.

      You have a great week.

        Mayrua,
You leave the best comments! Why not make it a book ha ha! You are always being your self and adding good content to my blog.
I’ve met you through Adrienne and have been friends with you since. Relationship building is just that!

You trust Adrienne- she trusts me – we trust you! On and on we go, until a spark happens. We can help each other, we can guest post, we can joint venture or we can even join an organization or recommend each other’s organizations.

It’s all about relationships and getting to know one another. For me, I am not a Network Marketer, but know many. When I have a session with someone and they are looking for a network to get into, I go to my roledex file and can give them many opportunities which suits their needs.

That is what I love about relationship building! I know exactly who sells what. When a newbie comes in and asks me if I could recommend a company they can get into, I just give them my friend’s names and the companies they represent.

What’s in it for me? One my ask. I’m a coach and want to see people prosper no matter what kind of business they are in. Online or offline.

Thanks for your kind words and wonderful comment.

Building relationships with other people within your niche is the recipe for success.

We all have to start somewhere.

Of course its not an overnight thing.

It must feel nice, when you are asked to write for someone.

I also take note to your: Always reply to every comment. If people take the time to reply take the time to respond.

    Enjoyed this.

My about me page lacked the “VA VA VOOM” factor.

I’m not saying it has that now..

Thank you Adrienne for your guest post with Donna. I have followed Donna and visa-versa for quite some time, and I too see her as a Go-To person on social media and how to build a business by building people.

I am now adding you, Adrienne, to my list of people to read and learn from. Your experiences parallel my own. I remember when I decided to take the plunge into video blogging. The learning curve was fun, but it sure wasn’t easy. I was scared senseless to get on video and actually say something, but I did it, and it got easier and more fun over time. So many people, now days, come and see me on video in my blog posts, and they say, “You’re so YOU!”

    Hi Donna & Adrienne

Another great post Adrienne you have given me some great advice over the time since I discovered your blog 🙂
Like others have said it’s hard to imagine you being intimidated by people online as you ooze confindence now!
Building relationships I have learned are vital to our business and like you say just be yourself and your readers will trust you if you are honest, as you know Adrienne I had some bad advice way back when I first started but thankfully when I shared my story my readers stayed loyal to me.
Thanks for sharing, and thanks to Donna for asking Adrienne to guest post on your blog.

Yeah, I know that’s very hard to imagine. Me being shy and intimidated. That just goes to show you that a lot of us start out that way.

I also had some bad advice early on as well Pauline but you’ve remained true to yourself and I believe that’s what counts the most. Your readers love you and if you’re honest with them they’ll respect you for it. I think that’s the most important thing.

    Adrienne, Great post.
I would like to add some points here which gives you some outline what some of different ways you can network?

    1. Leaving worthwhile comments.
    2. Promoting others than yourself.
    3. Go above and beyond to help someone new.
    4. Retweet other posts with a twist. (Make it so appealing people want to read it).
    5. Asking questions outside the box.
    6. Taking the time to just ask how their day was going.
    7. Finding a post on their blog that resonates with you – even if their niche is different from yours.
    8. An email offline

    Thanks for Sharing. Happy weekend!

Hi Rick, Good to see you again. I am glad you enjoyed my friend Adrienne’s guest post.
Adrienne’s story hit that point whereby we all share the same feelings.
Isn’t it great that when we share a bit of ourselves here in the marketplace, that it somehow pulls us more together?

    Donna and Adrienne,
what a great reminder that everyone starts somewhere.

I do find it hard to believe that you (Adrienne) were ever nervous about asking questions or feeling anxious about it. you are such a natural at it.

I remember first leaving a comment on your blog Adrienne, it took me weeks to get up the nerve. Looking back, it felt strange. everyone seemed to know each other on your site and were talking like good old friends. I felt like such an outside. But, similar to what happened to you, i read somewhere that leaving comments was one of the best ways to engage others so i did it. Then the magic happened.

You replied to my comment and left me this wonderfully long and thought full one. i can’t remember what anymore and that was when i started to get addicted to leaving comments. Like crack cocaine. It really feels good to network and build relationships online. In some ways they feel more real than real relationships as weird as that sounds it’s true.

Thanks Adrienne andDonna, love hearing these REAL stories of your struggles. It makes it less depressing for the rest of us still struggling.

      Hey Annie,

Thank you, I appreciate that and yes, we all had to start at the beginning.

Oh girl, you have NO idea. In my everyday life I’m like that so online I just was so much more nervous because you’re behind a computer you know. It’s not like you’re meeting people in person and they can tell what kind of person you are. I was just very intimidated.

See, we were both thinking the same thing. I was like that on everyone else’s blogs. I thought well these people all know each other and I’m an outsider. I don’t want to crash the party but I was told to go for it so that was my goal darn it. Aren’t we both glad we did that!

I’m SO glad you commented over at my place and we made that connection. Because some of these people don’t know that you’ve guest posted for me and your post was a huge hit. We’re at 211 comments on that one so you have a lot of really cool stuff to share Annie.

Thank you Annie for taking the time to stop by and share this with us. I know I appreciate it as well as Donna and hopefully some of the other people reading these comments as well.

Enjoy your weekend and have fun with the family.

      Hi Annie,
I believe this is what it is all about. Sharing our stories and showing people we are not alone.
When I first came in to the marketplace, I too, was apprehensive about commenting. It felt like I was a little kid in a new school where everyone knew each other.
You know that feeling. Heck talk about neuro-linking he he! I had to push myself forward to comment on blogs.
Now, I can go to anywhere and put my two cents in. Even articles by Forbes, etc. I just hop in there and say what I want in my own words.
And guess what? Some of the authors respond and like it.
Heck, there are out there to get their name noticed too.

So happy you enjoyed my Awesome Guest Adrienne!

    Hey Donna and Adrienne

Donna great you have Adrienne here. I have only recently got to know you both and now I see you everywhere. I am so glad I do.
Wow knowing you now Adrienne it is hard to ever imagine you ever did not know what you were doing. But of course none of were born knowing how to blog or be online 🙂 We should all remember that.

I had no clue what I was doing when I started. I also had an added handicap and that was I was technophobic. Seriously! I had my own personal assistant from about age 26 in my corporate world. I also had IT people to fix anything. Wow did I have a big learning curve.

I enrolled for a blogging course and when asked what browser I was using I was too embarrassed to say I did not know what a browser was!

Yes I was intimidated by other bloggers. Crazy really but true.

    Great post Adrienne as always.

      Hi Sue,

I chuckle often now Sue because if you guys had only been in my head, and at times you’d still be surprised at how much I still don’t know. I was a nervous wreck and as Donna knows, I still have certain issues with things.

Don’t feel alone Sue. I was an executive assistant but I never dealt with technology the way it is now. We had people we called to fix things so I understand what you’re saying. I think the only thing that saved me was that I love to learn. I’m fearless in that way.

You would be surprised at the people who don’t know what a browser is. But with each step you learn something new and isn’t it a great feeling!

Thanks for sharing that Sue and so glad to know we aren’t the only ones right!

      Hi Sue,
I am still a technophobic! I rather have someone do stuff for me.
If I put in a plug in on my WordPress Blog, I announce it all over the Social Platforms doing a happy dance. But that’s O.K. I know my limitations.

I rather put my time and energy into things that I am working on and learning more in my niche. It is a teacher/student thing out here. We can be leaders, but always students.

I feel like it is fine to let people know my limitations. I am not perfect. Heck, no one is.

Thank you Sue for your awesome comment,

I’m happy that you found this post helpful and one you haven’t run across a lot Jamella. I guess it’s a subject that needs to be addressed more often.

Ah, I don’t doubt that commenting didn’t phase you. Heck, you’re a powerhouse young lady. I wish I had been like you. Heck no, I was so scared and intimidated by so many people. Yikes! But, just glad I got past all of that. See, you have some things you can share about that topic that would probably help your readers. Make them feel comfortable.

Thanks for stopping by, we both appreciate it.

    Hi Adrienne,

Adrienne doing a guest post on Donna’s blog – or vice versa: What a divine combination !

I remember too well my first weeks of blogging. I knew that I had to make my posts visible to the entire world, but deep down, I didn’t want to because I knew everybody would be able to read them, friends and “enemies” and I felt so vulnerable. That, too, was way beyond my comfort zone.

But as you progress, you become more and more comfortable with what used to be outside your comfort zone. At the end of the day, it becomes a habit, your new comfort zone.

Time to move on and to expand it even further !

Well, some people – other bloggers – intimidated me when I got started, some of them are still around, others aren’t. They simply disappeared. Evaporated. That should tell us something.

You just have to stick long enough !

Thanks for sharing your insights Adrienne.

    Be blessed

      Hi Oliver,

Yeah, I got really lucky ya know. Donna is a fabulous person to be connected with. We’re all so fortunate.

So glad I wasn’t the only one who felt this way. You know, I had that thought process of build it and they will come. And everyone will see it and judge you. Yikes!

I know the feeling Oliver and some of those bloggers that intimidated me, we’ve now got a connection and they said the same thing about me. I had to laugh and that’s when I realized that I’m the one with the problem, no one else.

You’re right, stick it out and you’ll get more and more comfortable as time goes by.

I appreciate your comment Oliver, thank you so much. Always a pleasure to hear your thoughts on anything I share. I appreciate you!

Ha Ha Judgement! Once you put that out of your mindset, you can free yourself. We are all apprehensive in the beginning because we have that little birdie in our heads whispering “judgement” – how will people see me? Am I smart enough? Can I write well enough? On and on it goes.

Those thoughts are what I call the “critic” in your mind. Once understood, you can tell that critic to shut up and go on your merry way.

As we express our true selves, some will be attracted and some won’t. I consider this a spring cleaning. Who wants people to stick around if they don’t value us?

So, get out of the box, don’t listen to those “critic” thoughts in your head and express yourself. You have NOTHING to loose!

        Thanks Oliver and Adrienne,

I find it hard to believe YOU ever had anxiety about commenting on blogs, Adrienne! You are the queen of commenting. You always find something positive and helpful to say. So all I can say is that if you started off where you were – being scared – then everybody can take a lesson from this and realize they can succeed, too!

It’s funny how there are just some people that can get a reaction and who other people gravitate toward. You’re one of those people and though it’s hard to put a finger on exactly how you do it (I mean, you’re just YOU!) I do notice that you ask questions and treat your readers as equals who you are talking to. I love that about you and could take a lesson from that!

Donna, I’m glad you brought Adrienne here to share a little bit more of her wonderful insights. You are both two people whoIi admire and who have done a great job of being “real”.

Oh yeah, it’s the truth! That’s why I don’t mind sharing with people that they are SO not alone here. I thought everyone would think I was stupid because I couldn’t share my thoughts on topics I didn’t know that much about. I was a nervous wreck. All I kept hearing is that you need to add value and stand out from the rest. I so did not see that in myself Carol. Not at all.

I’ve had so many people say that they want me to teach them about relationship marketing Carol but like you said, I’m just being me. I know everyone is an individual and they all have their unique strengths. I guess mind is that I genuinely care about people period. I really do want to help them if I can so I think that’s why a lot of people gravitate toward me. They can see I’m truly sincere.

Thank you so much Carol, that was really sweet! I appreciate that so very much.

Always a pleasure to see and hear from you. I’ll be by your place later.

      Hi Thalia,

Online relationships are just as important as your offline ones. The thing about bringing them online is that they can help you with your business ventures as well. Word of mouth marketing is the most popular marketing online today. People are more prone to purchasing something that was recommended to them by a friend then just running upon some ad. Build those relationships and watch your business grow over time.

Thanks for your comment Thalia and I hope you enjoy the rest of your week.

Ah! Two of my favorite people online, Donna and Adrienne. Two very nice ladies who have been very sweet to me, personally, and that appreciate very much!

Thank you Donna for inviting Adrienne here. I also go every week to Adrienne’s blog. It’s always a pleasure.

Online relationships are so important, you bet! It’s because of them that I have now plenty of people I can interview and people who ask me to post on my blog without me having to ask. It’s also because of relationships that I have been asked to post on other blogs and happily was invited for an interview.

Adrienne called me not long ago and we got to know each other more over the phone. You’re right Adrienne you can’t know someone well enough only through their content.

This past week end I had the pleasure to speak for 2 hours over Skype with a blogger that you two both know as well and from that I will have a little surprise on my travel blog this coming Friday.

Thank you for this insight, Adrienne, you make it sound so easy. You really did a great job!

I agree Adrienne, There are so many “fears” that happen when we first come in. I second that: Move through them! Make connections with good bloggers. There are a lot of them out there. Just stay away from those “Bad Neighborhood” sites that some people are connected to like gambling, porn and believe it or not – health supplies. Google is coming down on them.
I wouldn’t comment on someone selling. Also, If I get a comment to my blog and their commentLuv is connected to such sites. I can either choose not to approve them or I would edit their commentLuv so it is not associated with my blog.
