Overcoming Overwhelm

What happens when something takes you away from your daily schedule as an Internet Marketer?  What are the feelings that accompany the sudden rush of “overwhelm”, and how do we move beyond them?

We can have things all set up, be on a roll with our blogging, social sites, opt-ins and even our ad campaigns.  Then BOOM…something rips you out of your work flow.  It can be a power outage, a storm, a family issue, or even burnout.  You can stare at that laptop all you want, but cannot summon up the energy or the mind state to open it.

I recently experienced this, and want to share it with you here.  I fell into the deep ditch of Overwhelm.  Yes, me!  The gal who gives advice, knows the tricks of the trade.  The gal who’s mantra comes from Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life”  when he sings “I just pick myself up and get back in the race….”

I was totally Overwhelmed and did not want to be that victim.  But calls came in from clients that were under stress, my mom fractured her shoulder, and I had to go through a battery of my own medical tests for one thing or another.   Crap!!!!!

So, how did I overcome that feeling of Overwhelm?

I let go and let God.  No unique, maybe, but pretty effective!

Knowing I couldn’t do anything constructive with my business, I went into deep prayer and meditation.

Each time that little voice came into my head saying “You should be doing this or that” I put it in the corner and told it to shut up.

As I looked deeper into my overwhelm, I came to understand many things.  I wasn’t going to lose my business.  I have so many understanding friends and clients.  And those deadlines I had made for myself actually could wait.  Best of all, I was lending a helping hand to family and those that needed immediate help.  Therefore, I really was doing my job, after all!  Just a different one than I normally engage in.

I found that everything was not about me and my business.  I looked at things more spiritually and felt peaceful being there.  I realized how “consumed” I was with my business, all the moving parts of it, even though I had thought things were balanced in my life.

Each time I looked at my laptop, my knee-jerk reaction was that I thought it would be too much to do once I turned it on.  So I set it aside, out of my sight.  I simply dealt with things as they came along.  All the while, I kept praying and meditating for balance, harmony, peace and even some direction.

I realized that I didn’t have to answer every email or attend to every little detail making up my business.  People understood.  That is how I came to experience my AHA moment.  Despite the fact that my primary role is one of teaching and counseling people on a daily basis, the time had come that I needed to allow people to help me.  I simply had to let them in and lend me a hand.

So here I am back to writing a blog, getting back to my scheduled tasks.  Overwhelmed?  Not anymore. I found out that when I get that feeling, I can let go.  I have the ability to do that.  I am not in control … and don’t need to be.  Funny isn’t it?  We tend to think we are in control of our business, but looking at the bigger picture, we really are not, well not completely.

So my fellow entrepreneurs, when you experience that feeling of Overwhelm, try just letting go!  I know it is easier said than done, but just let go and all will fall into place.

Blessings,
Donna

P.S.  I would love to hear your experiences of how you have dealt with this problem.

Donna, there is one word I want to add to your article: Rest! If we ourselves are feeling sleep deprived, sick, or otherwise run-down, we need to take the time to REST! I was struggling with a cold over the last couple of days. Last night I slept almost 11 hours. The way I feel today is SO much better than I have been all week! Yet we often forget that sleep and nutrition will take us a long way.

      Thank you Steve!

Rest is so important. If we find ourselves pushing, our resistance starts to fade and that’s when we tend to get sick.

Keeping our immune system strong and healthy with proper rest and nutrition gives us a healthy life and a sharp focused mind.

Donna, that is when leverage always helps. I love your individual business model. I must say that sooner or later this was going to happen as it did.

When we as you know, keep making the decision to keep moving alone and I can do it all mentality. That is the formula for breakdown. We all have been there one time or another.

The great part of it is that you got up and made the right choices and allowed that power that only can come from God flow naturally in you. That is the peace within that will heal.

I always love to here from you and this time it really paid off and made me understand that no one of us are alone. We are not the only ones that go through these challenges and that at lone makes on feel better. Now, learning from such an ordeal is the catch.

My heart goes out to you and your family. I am standing for you and always pray for strength and courage to overflow within you. Amen.

Donna, you are still a rock for so many of us and that is what I love about you and that will never change. Thank you for this amazing share and being transparent. We know you are only human and that is the best quality you have.

      William,

I so appreciate your beautiful kind words! I know I am never alone because I walk with God and Angels.

Whenever life throws a curve ball at me…and it does from time to time, I turn to God.

There have been so many studies of people who were ill in their body and/or mind. The ones who had the most success of recovering were the ones that were spiritual – People who believed in a higher power which I call God.

      Thanks so much,

Hi Donna – great suggestions! For me, when circumstances get overwhelming, I call on my Angels. Like your ‘let go let God’ approach, it reminds me that there is a higher power orchestrating all – any delays are in my best interest! I find this totally lets me off the hook!

I have been in the exact same situation several times since I started marketing online very heavily. I have had to several times, just shut down the compute and walk away in order to get focused again. The longest time I took away was a week, but it really helped me focus myself and start fresh and revived. I think this is really important and if we don’t do it every once in a while, we just get burnt out and give up.

We all need that break. It is like if we were working for a company, we would have weekends, holidays and vacation time. We need that time off.

Donna, I’m so glad you’re okay. I know you weren’t directly hit by Hurricane Sandy, but it sounds like you went through some other tough winds.

You’re post reminds me of one of my favorite Scripture verses: “I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.”

This word picture, to me, is about letting go, and entrusting myself to my kind and compassionate Creator. And my Creator often holds me through loving others around me.

      Steve,

Your words are so touching! Once we get through all the “noise” and quiet ourselves, we can have a better communication with our Creator. When we do let go and know there is a more powerful force there to hold us like a child, all becomes clear.

    Hi Donna,

Thank you for sharing your overwhelmed experience. You were definitely not alone!

I was SOOOOO overwhelmed when I first started implementing online strategies that I got stressed (which had not been happening for years). I eventually figured out that I needed to have a business coach to give me the type of ‘hold-my-hand’ technical support. Thank goodness that I decided to do that!

Outsourcing the tasks that we are not good at is an excellent way to ‘earn’ back more of our productive hours. I find bundling my calls and email checking extremely helpful too. Structure is the key. Having the essential tasks organised as a ‘daily method of operation’ can overcome the feeling of overwhelmed too.

      Hi Viola

Absolutely! Bundling calls and emails, outsourcing, and having a great DMO, and most importantly Structure is so important to have protection against overwhelm.

Funny thing is, that is exactly what I do! But sometimes life gets in the way and everything comes to a stop.

That’s why for me, overwhelm was such an experience. I thought I had it all down! lol

    Hey Donna,

I block everything out. I turn off the email drink a Red Rain energy drink. Either work at what I set up to do or go with plan A and B. Also, when your just not in the type of mindset do something you enjoy for 30 min or so, and then get back to business. Nothing wrong with feeling overwhelmed, at least you have stuff to do:) Every week I plan out so much stuff and if I can get 75% done I feel I succeeded.

Good Morning Donna, o Gee….If anyone knows overwhelm I sure do…and I make no secret that I have felt this way for the past couple of weeks. Nothing seems to go right when I am in this state of mind. In fact I feel I need to just take a week or so and disappear so I can get back on the right track. I also notice I do get a bit over fussy when I am overwhelmed by my day to day chores and lists. This article actually made me feel good this morning, as I know there are others who do suffer the same as I do from time to time. Thanks. I enjoy reading all the blogs….

No, you are so not alone. Feeling this way happens to the best of us. But the secret is knowing what to do when it happens. We cannot get down on ourselves, we cannot listen to that critic in our minds that will encourage us to spiral down.

Instead, we just have to let go, and go back to square one again. I am glad this helped.

      Hi Farouk,

Letting go is so powerful! Once we develop the mindset to do so, life becomes a little easier.

As entrepreneurs, there is so much to deal with, even besides business. As we grow and change, we do need to let go.

When that happens, a new door always opens up.

You aren’t alone to get this kind of a feeling Donna!

Yes, there are times when you aren’t just up to things, and the reasons can be many. Either we get drained out or feel we are getting into a monotonous routine, or we are just overwhelmed just as you mentioned.

At such times it’s best to take it easy and let go, and not try to get back into the work track as that could aggravate the condition. You did the right thing to turn within and meditate, something which I also do. And soon, within a few days of gap of doing nothing, or doing something different from the usual – you feel refreshed and energized once again. It happens with me at least.

I think all this mainly happens because we don’t entirely lead a disciplined life that we should. This includes taking out time for leading a proper healthy lifestyle and diet, alongside taking out time for exercise and working with your inner-self. Once we start giving each of these things adequate time and slow down our rat-race, we feel better.

Thanks for sharing, and it’s nice to have you back all geared up again. 🙂

      Hi Harleena,
I totally agree with your comment. As an entrepreneur for so many years, I have learned how to discipline myself. When I see I’m getting too much on my plate, I listen to my self-hypnosis tapes that work so well.

When I do this I can enjoy each and every task I have to do. (even cleaning my house lol) But when stuff like this happens, I do have to work hard to give myself permission to stay off the internet waves.

It is the knowing what lies before me as I stare at my computer that got me overwhelmed. But once I faced that challenge and knew to take it a little at a time, I was OK.

      Thanks for visiting,

I so agree about the overwhelm syndrome, Donna!

I find the first thing I do when this happens is start listing the things I really MUST do. Then I look at the list and recognize there is no way I can get them all done in the time I have, so I take a deep breath and take a break from it – work out, or go for a run, for example. When I come back, I usually have it clear in my mind which task to work on, and somehow it all starts to come together again.

The hardest task for me is to ask for help! Sometimes, though, as you found, it’s the best thing to do.

Now … let me get back to that list I was making 😉

Going out and taking a run will surely give you a break. Exercise is the best thing for us to do when we are stuck or feeling overwhelmed.

It is a great way to do each task. And we have many!

I know how you feel about asking for help, I am guilty of the same, but I’m working on it!

What happens to me is I feel firstly like giving up, throwing in the towel, going back to bed and punching something. I’ve been known to kick some things too. So, I have my little tantrum and then as abruptly as it starts I stop and ask myself what the heck am I doing?

The tantrum has a function and serves a purpose. It gets the frustration out of me and it acts as a cleanser and a release. With that under my belt I am able to look rationally at the situation, evaluate the “what’s so” and move on.

Life is so different today then it used to be. Stress, frustration and overwhelm are so much more prevalent then in the past. Dealing with it is absolutely essential.

Thanks, Donna, for letting me examine a piece of myself that needed to be.

Dealing with stress, frustration and overwhelm is so important. It is part of us. But the trick is that we can deal with it. If we cannot, it is time to seek some help.

Donna, yes yes I to got hit bad and also then the next day a storm ‘Northeastern”. That was the end of hope as I thought at first.

The building unyielding faith allows me to get through the storm. You and myself handled it different yet come to the same conclusion. Let go of all the negative thoughts. It may seem hard at first based on all the disappointments.

Find it in your heart to forgive the unknown for placing all this burden at once in you lap per say. I already gave my life to God and never look back. So, in times like this is only a test to see if my perseverance kicks in. It always has and will continue.

Donna, thanks for sharing and empower us to move forward in difficult times. Just ask for help. We have a huge global partnership and will always be there for all our members. Hi William,

I know you understand how letting go and letting God lift me up at times of anxiety and things I cannot control. I am very close to God and know in my heart that no matter what happens, I will do the best I can do.

My wonderful friends like you have been so supportive and I see all of you as my little angels. I got caught up in worrying about my business, when my important job was to do what God wanted me to do. Help Others! A very simple thing. I did the best I could do and still am sending clothing down to the victims. I know there are many that are not getting the help they need in time for the cold weather.

If I can clothe one person and make them warm, I have done God’s work. And hey, that is why we are here anyway.

    Hi Donna,

You always seem to have the right message at the right time every time I visit your blog. I loved that you shared how you deal with overwhelm because, let’s face it, everyone deals with it at some time or another.

I know what you have been challenged with because of the damage from Hurricane Sandy. I commend you and David for reaching out to others in need at this time, above and beyond your family and friends. I know, there is so much of a mess to clean up and people are displaced. When events change peoples lives like that, we need to be grateful for what we have. The locals need people like you and David to step up with a helping hand.

As to worrying about your business, there is no need! You do have a lot of supportive and understanding friends, and we don’t notice it as much as you think. I’m not saying we didn’t miss you or notice that you were less active. I know for myself that I imagine that other people can feel my experience when I am in “overwhelm” mode. I’m happy to say that has not been the case for me for a long time. The most peaceful thing you did to get through this tough time is to let go. It’s easier said then done, but you did it!

I’m glad you are in our hangout group. I know you will take care of some of the issues that are coming up for you.

Prayer and meditation…ah a good thing! It helped you get through, get refreshed, and you are back on track again!

    Donna,
well put it “I let go and let God”

Ho, yes, we can say much more and go deep as much as we want.. but when the so called, “robber hit the road” then what?

I use the “I let go and let God” often… even when I may not be as overwealmed as you described in your post.. why? Because I truly TRUST in God and I know GOD know much better then me and I am just a Vehicle so when the Vehicle get stuck… I just have to be patient and figure out what is best to do tio get unstuck as best as possible and be grateful to GOD that I can…

Hope all is well (for real) with you,m your family and everyone who is in contact with you… you render a great service to help people… and when there is set backs… well, there is a great reason behind it so hope you discopvered and made adjustmnent to go forward toward what you believe to be best according to God Guidance.

I admit, it’s a breath of fresh air to hear when someone like YOU can succumb to the trials of mere mortals like us 🙂 Well, Donna, I’m glad that you found peace and got through this tough time and that gives me hope. What I love about you is how easy it is to relate to you. You know how to hit on those fears and challenges that we face every day.

I love the idea of letting go. It’s something I have tried from time to time and when I can actually do it, it does work. Of course there are those times my brain just clings and clings and tries to control everything and it’s sort of like tightening a noose. But sometimes we have to recognize when whatever is happening is just… going…. to…. happen and we can’t control everything and make it go our way. We just have to be with what is. And go on!

I had a moment yesterday (the culmination of a number of things) and I thought I was going to lose my mind. And it may seem counter-intuitive but I just STOPPED. No more doing, no more making lists, no more trying. I just cleared out my mind and stopped everything. I didn’t have what you might call a “productive” day after that 🙂 But I did have a sane one. And I feel better today!

As always thank you for your inspiring words of wisdom and for being someone who really knows how to get to the heart of things!

Sometimes as we enjoy what we are doing, we put too much on our shoulders. Then the brain goes into a mode where we can’t even think.

I usually take that as a sign that I’m doing too much. I will allow myself to do nothing at all for a day. Then come back like I was on vacation. We need a mind break now and then.

But when Overwhelm hits and I cannot do anything for days..I know I’m in trouble. I used to see bumper stickers saying “Let Go and Let God” but never identified with that. Later, I found it was an AA saying. I researched those sayings and found they were very helpful to me.

Now I am at a point in my life where God plays an important role. I deeply understand with my heart and soul that saying. I immediately find support when I repeat that saying.

Bottom line, I rather have a sane day than a productive one lol.

    Welcome back, Donna.

I recently had the same issues. My physical health has been really bad recently and I have some tests coming up. I have young kids, my internet writing/editing business, church, friends and the lot.

Like you, the only way I could cope is to let God take over. I let myself become a child again, and every time I had these racing, panicked worries going through my mind, I’d stop and say, like a child, ‘God, the devil is at me again. Please tell him to stop’.

I know this sounds strange, but it actually worked for making me feel stronger. I’ve also been cutting down my working hours, going for walks, and have decided I’m going to go to a dance class. I don’t need a dance class, but this is something I’ll enjoy and it will give me something other than work, family and commitments to focus on.

Another thing I’ve done recently is to resolve to do at least 1 random good deed each week.

      How wonderful Anne!

No, it doesn’t sound strange to me at all. As a believer in God, I have to remind myself that I don’t stand alone. There are angles and spirits always there at my side. It is when I forget to use them, that I fall down.
But when falling, I am reminded that God is there for me. God never lets me down. I do have a strong faith and that is what gets me up and running!

Oh and thoe random good deeds are always there in front of us. All we have to do is keep our eyes open and just do it. Why else are we here anyway? We are here to help one another. This is why I just love marketing on the internet. There are so many like-minded people that do stand by our side.

Hope you are feeling well, and message me if you want,

    Hi Donna,

Welcome back dear 🙂 Glad to see you back here…

Well, it’s about changing our mind state and clarity in the mind, isn’t it Donna? 🙂 It’s rare I get overwhelm and I’m not that much busy as you though. Family issues come and play sometimes, but cool.

After storm and everything, it’s not easy I guess. You are the one who has gone through it, so you know how it feels 🙂 Glad you overcome your overwhelm and now it’s SHOWTIME, nah? 😉

    Let’s ROCK N’ ROLL… 😉

    Cheers…

      Woo Hoo Mayura,

I’m am ready to rock and roll! I hardly get overwhelmed and even teach people how to get over it. That is the difficult part.

Experiencing it myself just humbled me a bit more. Once we learn something and even teach it to others, it can happen to us too. But the tools that we have learned have to be put in place.

Especially letting go…that was a difficult one for me!

      Thanks,
      Donna

    Hi Donna

Yes, you have it rough back that way for awhile. Hope things are much more settled now.

Coming to the conclusion as organized as one might be there are always curved balls thrown in your direction from time to time. We can’t always be expected to hold it all together day in and day out.

Even when we don’t have major problems, we just need to take a breath once in awhile.

I have to just “let it go” and know that I can’t possibly do everything.

      Hi Mary,

Yes, Letting go is the key. For me it is difficult to do, but it is a learning curve. It is one of those things that I need work on myself.

As I read through my comments, I think I need to make a sign and put it up somewhere where I see it each day. The sign will simply say “Let Go”….

        Hi Donna

Funny, I have right in front of my keyboard on a piece of paper.
“Let it go!” highlighted in green and beside it “In the moment!” highlighted in pink. I take a breath and relax, it comes in handy as a reminder. LOL

    Hi Donna,

I know you guys had it tough on the path of that fury of mother nature. Plus, as we know, law of attraction usually makes sure that one hurdle doesn’t come alone, do they? Well, it also goes for good things, so I am very sure that everything is going to get better and better from now on.

Let go, and let God! It’s the best thing and the only thing to do when you know that you’ve done your best and there is nothing more you can do. I am so glad that’s what you did.

I’m glad to have you back, Donna, and see you around soon 🙂

      Hi Sylviane,

Yes, the old saying “let go and let God” always works for me. When put into action, we realize that sometimes we are powerless, especially against mother nature.

When something happens like that, I personally feel that it is my duty to God to get out there and help. To me, that is the most important thing in life. Being selfless at these times and having compassion is the only thing I could do.

We are still sending clothing down to the victims of the storm. There are so many people that are in need.

As for me, letting go gave me peace of mind and now I can get back into my business without being overwhelmed, doing one task at a time.

    Hi Donna

Overwhelm is something I seem to get into far to often. I think you would have to be super human (or maybe the opposite a saint) to not feel overwhelm with what you have been through.

I think business is very secondary to life and the people we love. At times of crisis you need to do what you need to do. Of course your clients and blog readers etc will understand and if they do not maybe you do not want them in your life.

You were in my thoughts and prayers. Great to see you back on our hangout today.

      Thanks Sue!

It is bound to happen to the best of us. Our family and loved ones do come first. But when being the “chief cook and bottle washer” in our own business, it is so difficult to get back when things pile up over time.

The trick was to take a deep breath and to take it one step at a time, as I am doing now.

I appreciate you thinking about me and yes, the hangout was a blast. It was an inspiration for me to get back into action.

      Thank you again my friend,

    Hi Donna,

good to hear that you have managed your overwhelm in such a trying time and also have helped other people through their’s.

Doing what we can moment by moment sometimes is the best approach and letting go, trusting the process and meditating helps as you said.

Thank you for taking the time and sharing your insights in your awesome post.

      Hi Yorinda,

Yes, that moment by moment mindset got me through that overwhelming feeling. When it comes down to it, feelings are something that can be controlled.

Yes, we must address them first, feel it, then carry on!

      Thanks for stopping by,

I find it hard to believe that you’re not always in control Donna. You just seem to have that air about you. So together, always knowing the right thing to say.

Then on the inside we’re all just people right! We’re all the same in that respect that what we see from the outside looking in may not be what’s on the inside looking out.

It’s been a very long time since I’ve felt overwhelm but I have so I know what you’re talking about. I think now though that I wouldn’t feel as guilty letting it go if I should. Okay, I still would because I’m just geared that way I think but meaning that I’m an entrepreneur now and work from home so I’m not going to beat myself up if at times I need some time to myself. I’d probably feel somewhat guilty about it but would do it anyway.

I’m glad that you are past all of that now and hopefully back to the somewhat “norm” of things. Hope your Mom is okay and you too young lady. We can’t have you falling apart on us now. You’re way too important for that.

Thanks for sharing this with us Donna and letting us all know that we’re all just human. Yikes!!!

      Hi Adrienne,

Sometimes when life takes so much of our time, we have to deal with situations first. That can cause overwhelm. The worst part is, I know how to deal with it!

But in every downfall, there is an upside. There were many things I have learned on this journey.

The most important was not to procrastinate when I had the time to come back. Honestly, I feared opening my computer knowing that there was so much to catch up on, but it is that one step at a time thing!

      Thanks girl,
