Flying The Coop For Fresh Eyes On Your Business

This post was most recently updated on March 26th, 2014

donnamerrilltribe.comHere is part 3 in my series.  I started with the question “Does your business own you or do you own your business?”  In my last post I discussed the problem of when couples were in disharmony, and how to make compromises.

This post, I am going to deal with what I call “flying the coop.”   When you have so much on your plate, and need to make many business decisions at once,  it is sometimes good to just get away.  Yes, my friends… fly the coop!

I was at a point where my product needed to be reviewed one more time so it was in good working order.  Now, some might say “hey you are almost there…just do it.”   Others may think that I was somehow sabotaging my effort altogether.  But truth be told, I just needed to get away and find some fresh perspective on it.

That, coupled with a change of residence I have been thinking about for a while now, got me flying my coop for a few days.

I closed everything down…yep…no computer, my new i-phone wasn’t hooked up to anything but a ring tone.  I got in the car with hubby and headed for what I needed the most… clearing out my head, and calming my mind.

We headed for the place I love to be the most….Southern Maine.   It was not tourist season, so it was a quiet time.  The smell of salt water, mixed with the scent of the tall pine trees was precisely the medicine I needed.

donnamerrilltribe.com

One day into the trip, and I forgot all about my product, sales page, marketing.  We just left the busy rush of daily to-do’s and must-do’s, and nestled in to a quiet little place where there was basically nothing to do.  Oh yes, it was a bit chilly, but sitting on an obscure part of the beach, watching the waves and being one with the ocean did me a world of good.

But of course, we soon got caught up in some stark realities.  In particular, we wanted to see if we would like living there. Yes, it is a cold climate, but we prefer it to hot and humid climates.  So I called one of my buddies that is a broker and we went house hunting.  I actually fell in love with two places.

The excitement of living in a new place (as long as it had great internet connection) was bittersweet.  Ah… leaving so beautiful a place where I live now, for a more beautiful place is exciting, but moving is also high on that stress list.

By the end of 5 days, meditating and pondering which would be a more suitable place for us to live, we are putting our home on the market and heading north.   Now all things became more clear.

When people asked what we did for a living we responded “we are internet marketers” and eyebrows raised high.   Yes, we can live anywhere we want and do anything we want.

Saying those words made me feel amazing.  I realized how few people have the luxury and freedom of doing what they want, anytime and any place.

So, for a while, I not only will I be marketing in my business, but wheeling and dealing with some properties.

Flying the coop was the best thing I have done in a long time.  I’m on my way home now on an 8 hour trip, looking over every detail of my product.  Yippie… I can see it all flowing now.

So my friends, remember that when you have your own business, and even though things are going great, take a break and go to one of your favorite places to clear your mind.

The great thing about owning your own business is that even though you may be on the brink of one deal or another, you can still have the power to step back and re-evaluate your product, launch, or whatever you are doing.

Fresh eyes are always great.

And some salty, pine air helps, too!

Many Blessings,

Donna

Donna, I have flown my coop before. I am a bit of a perfectionist and I also have a hint of Compulsive Disorder. A bad mix.

I can not go to bed without making sure doors are locked or oven is off. I am getting better, but sometimes it has save me.

I agree with people should get out and enjoy life better. I try to take time to enjoy myself at least once a month.

I have not done so lately, but that was an awesome getaway for you. I would love that.

    Hi Donna,

Thanks for sharing your story. It sounds like you two had so much fun! We all know you have been thinking about moving for a long time, so “Flying The Coop” gave you and David the opportunity to make a decision and sort your priorities. I think you were unsettled because of the yearning you had to make your move. Sometimes you have to take a break and spend some personal play time! It must have been invigorating to stop all of your business activities, relax and enjoy the beauty of the ocean…your favorite!

You and David are fortunate to have the freedom to go wherever you want without having to make arrangements with a boss or workplace. Freedom is the sweetest benefit of working from home. Recently, I took a trip for 10 days and I didn’t have to worry about “missing work.” I wanted to go…so I did!

Letting go of your business to take a vacation can be a challenge. I think it was smart to completely disconnect. By leaving it behind, you come back with a sense of peace and a new perspective.

I am so happy for you and David that you were able to find a new home. I know both of you will love it!

      Thanks so much Raena!

I did follow your vacation on Facebook and it looked AMAZING! I’m sure you are all pumped up and ready to rock your business once again.

Yes, the best part of our business is freedom. That is something we sometimes forget. We all got in it to obtain this, but sometimes get “stuck” in our work.

Funny thing is, when we are away we may think we are missing something, but the truth is, when we get back, it is all there in place.

Thanks for coming by and be in touch,

Donna, It is always good to step away for things to gain clarity and perspective. You can pick up on things you missed, or indeed come up with something entirely new…and better. I was told early in my corporate career that walking round the block or staring out of a window for a few minutes can help this process…going to Maine sounds like a much better plan though 😉

      Absolutely!

Looking out the window, walking around the blog, or taking a vacation away from your business gives you a new fresh look at what you need to do.

Sometimes working so intensely is like looking at an impressionistic painting close. Taking a break, helps you to stand away from that painting to see it clearly.

Great words of wisdom Donna! This is something I’m about to do this weekend. I have a slew of blog posts pending to be published, marketing campaigns, etc… and now I’m taking a break to clear my mind.. going on a 5 day vacation of nothingness LOL… well I’ll be doing something, but it won’t be business related.

Congratulations in finding a new place. You sound really excited and it sounds like it’s right up your alley! Thanks for sharing the advice and I look forward to more of your posts!

      Hi Sherman,

Yes, I know that place….blog posts, emails, on and on we go. But taking your 5 days away is going to do so much good.

When you get back you will be refreshed and see things clearly. This is why I think it is important, no matter now much we are doing, to step back and ENJOY LIFE.

I know when I got back I spent lots of time tweaking things that I didn’t notice before. Have fun!

    Hi Donna,
it is so good to hear that you took some time out.

Having a break can do wonders for our energy levels and perspectives.

I took some time out today and did some weeding in the garden for a couple of hours, since I just couln’t get into doing the commenting I would usually do at that time.

I hope your home situation/change/shift will go smoothly.

    Donna,

I think everyone needs time when they just step away from everything for a while.

We always go camping with my kids during June and this year we are going to Yellowstone. The great thing about Yellowstone is there is no internet at all so I will actually take a complete vacation from the internet. I have been thinking that I need that. I am always so busy with all of my off line stuff as well as my online that a rest sounds really good right now.

I love Maine, it is beautiful. What a great place to be moving.

Great to know that you take time out with your family. Hey, That is the most important reason why we are here isn’t it? Taking that vacation from the internet sure helps us keep our balance.

I can give you stories about taking a break. Mine wasn’t planned a few months ago, but when I looked back it was much needed. Some bloggers just don’t take breaks and end up losing steam. One blogger I know created a huge plate for themselves and when life happened, it was too much to handle at the end of the day. They agonized over whether to keep it and eventually just abandoned it entirely.

It reminded me of business ideas I liked, but not enough to take a break and give it some thought about who ruled who. Now, I am in a place where I still work a full time job, and schedule when I need to be online and when I need a break. This gives me time to be with family and give my mind a mental break. Good for you girl on flying the coup and happy house hunting Donna!

      Thank you Sonia,

I know some people too that put too much on their plate and eventually either burn out or just leave the business.

Balance is so important. I usually take small breaks each day for myself and give myself low priority on the internet during weekends.

Thank you for sharing your strategy. Girl you are a dynamo!

We missed you Donna while you were off having fun but I just flew the coop too as you know. Yep, I headed to Nashville to spend time with my niece and nephew and what a great time I had. Do you know that I didn’t obsess over work! I didn’t think “oh my God I have to get on my blog”.

I was actually very surprised at myself that I wasn’t freaking totally out about it. I soon realized that what I was doing and the people I was with was so much more important then my blog. Not that I don’t love all my friends online and my blog but I needed that break darn it. I haven’t flown the coop since I started my online business. Okay, not for more then a day or so.

Oh and I’ll be flying the coop again in less then a week so you are right. Sometimes we just need to unwind, take a break and then come back with a fresh perspective. Hey, it works too.

Welcome back and happy you found a place you think you and David will love.

      Hi Adrienne,

I am glad your trip to Nashville was fun for you. I am especially happy that you didn’t stress about your blog.

I know that feeling. The first time I flew the coop, I was blogging and doing phone calls. No fresh eyes when I got back lol.

This time I was totally free! I did tell my online friends that I would be away and they all understood.

I feel like it is one big step to success when we can just leave and not think about our business. Hey, that’s why we started this in the first place!

    Hi Donna,

Long time, missed reading your blog. But I am glad you took a break and came back with fresh eyes. Yes, flying the coop is needed sometimes to refresh our minds.

I do resonate a lot with Angela’s story here and I feel the same sometimes, overwhelmed and not knowing what I should do next and that question from our hubbies just make things all the whole worse.

I think you are absolutely right that we sometimes need to get away from what we are doing and just breathe some fresh air even without going anywhere just get away from the computer and work is good enough. Balance is always good.

Thanks Donna for the great reminder and I am glad to see you back refreshed and recharged.

    Be Blessed,

I did miss all my buddies while I was away. I made it a point to check in only once a day to see if something was urgent. Otherwise, I was focused on pine trees and ocean. What a perfect mix!

We were house-hunting and found two prospective places we liked. Many of my friends are asking me why move North? But I don’t like the heat and pretty used to the cold.

      My eyeballs are fresh!

    Hi,

This is the kind of story that makes people dream. You are lucky. What can I say? It’s good to take a break … when you can. It is a lot easier when you enjoy success as an internet marketer. Until then you will have to fight. During this fight you are sometimes overwhelmed. So many things to do? What to do first?
In times like this you have to prioritize. After you create your to do list for the day you need to take those actions, one by one and ask:

Can this action take me closer to my goal?

If the answer is Yes, you will assign it a high priority. If not, you will assign it a low priority. As for me, I’m using letters and numbers.
For example, the most important tasks for the day are marked with A, the least important with C or D. When I’m faced with more important tasks, I mark them A1, A2, A3. The same with other tasks: B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, C3 etc.
I always do A1 first, then A2 and so on.
Then you’ll have to try to find a way to outsource the C and D levels. Find someone who can do the shopping for you (if you don’t like shopping or is too time consuming). Find someone who pays the bills for you etc.
Automated systems are excellent. Find a good one to take care of, at least, some of your chores.
This is how you can avoid overwhelming and keep the pleasure of working.

When all the above are not enough, yes I throw my PC out of the window and go somewhere on a beach or go hiking in a forest etc.

Thank you for taking the time to write this posts and

    Have a nice day

      Hi Silviu,

What great input you have given us, I thank you.

Your system looks like it works well. I have something similar I do too. Looks like you tackle that first job and get it done! That is so important. After that, the rest is easy.

Once we have our day planned, and stick to it, business becomes so much easier to handle.

Automated systems are great too! And yes, for those things I cannot be bothered with, I also hire people to do them.

Great suggestions and I thank you,

You know, sometimes I feel what if someone stops by on your blog for first time and think “Hey, what’s this? Storytelling?”. But finally it’s all clear and the advice memorize with a story 🙂 Love it! Great approach Donna.

You have a successful week and hope to hear more about moving dear 🙂 Birdies will miss you.

Wow, long time no see this blog it seems.

I also took 9 days off my computer and away from my online business because of my move, and that was also needed because I was getting very tired lately. Not that I am rested now, really, but it’s a new start, and we need this once in a while.

I’m glad that you found a place you liked to live in and that you could clear your mind.

    Hi Donna,
I’ve been trying my hands on running my own small online business for a few months now, and so far it’s been working really great. I must say that at the first few months of starting, I let my business stress me out, because I was afraid that I might fail if I don’t attend to it immediately.
I agree with you that even if the Internet has reached a lot of people, still there are others who do not understand the lifestyle of Internet marketers or what they exactly do for a living. Sure, online entrepreneurs have their time on their hands, but it does not mean that they work less than 8 hours a day and are superior (in intelligence) than ordinary office workers. Some actually work MORE than 8 hours a day, some work even during weekends, but when they do take a break or a vacation, they try to really relax and have a fun time with their family. Everything has its pros and cons, it’s really up to the person on what type of work/business he or she is comfortable with, right?

It’s always a great decision to fly the coop when you feel like it. After all, we only get to live one life! 🙂

      Hi Emily,

Weather we are first starting or are seasoned business people, we can get caught up in Internet Marketing. Running our own One-man-show can be difficult.

I’ve seen even the most organized people get consumed with all there is out there to do.

I am a fan of taking mini-vacations to break up my mindset so I can enjoy life in general. Even if it is unplugging for one day, it does a world of good.

When working on a project like I’ve been doing, it took so much focus and attention. Before I “make it go live” I wanted to clear my mind and then put some fresh eyeballs on it.

      Hi Sue,

Even though I just graduated to my IPhone the day before the trip, I didn’t go to the internet just once a day.

It was so wonderful to see my mom’s face when she walked out to the beach. She started doing her yoga breathing and said she had “good vibes!” lol

The homes we seen were quite lovely and not directly on the beach. I need to be at least 5 miles inland in a quiet community. Then there is the big tourist season….Thank goodness we will have our own private beach.

I am so grateful I can take my business wherever I go.

    Hi Donna,

I love your story!! So that’s why you’re gone for 2 weeks? *big smile*

Me too. I had that feeling last week like “I am so overwhelmed and felt like I’m so behind and everyone around me is smarter than me.” I started to compare myself again from other designers online…and yet here I was giving advice to others, “Never compare yourself to others but only compare yourself to yourself. Are you better this year than last year?” Things like that. But I somehow felt I hit rock bottom.

Dunno why. Could be one of those days? And so I said this weekend, I’m not going to worry about my business. I’m not going to worry about my husband who kept asking me, “Have you made money on your web yet?” Things like that. I was just going to SHUT the world around me.

Well…I may not be touring some place else but my mind was somewhere else.

All I did was “meditating” talking to God. Asking God, “What should I do next?” Seems like I’ve ran out things to say. Things to write. And yet, although I have just 25 list of brainstorms…things to write I somehow felt like I’m at the tip of my rope. Or perhaps I was on top of the mountain top…ready to fall. I have overworked my brain and my brain just needed REST. And that’s exactly what I did.

The next morning I feel REVIVE. That dark and stormy feeling wasn’t there anymore. Is it something that I eat or what? What makes me feel this way? Anyway, thanks for sharing this post. This is GREAT!!!! I hope you have a great Sundae and have a fabulous week!!

Thank you so much Angela for sharing such a wonderful experience you went through.

Even though it was not so wonderful at first, you came out winning in the end.

I see this happening all the time and I have had those days too. It is time when you just need a “mental Vacation” whereby you just shut things down and clear your head.

The way you have described your emotions is so great because we all can resonate with them. We ALL have “those days.”

I do agree that you have overworked your brain. Too many ideas at once, too much pressure on yourself, plus hubby asking about the business can cause a “meltdown.”

But you went to the perfect place: Asking God! I do that too and may not get an answer quickly, but eventually I do.

We always go through those dark days, but by the next day you were revived and that feeling went away.

I think that those of us who have never experienced this is rare.

Again I want to thank you so very much for sharing and hopefully people will resonate with your comment which was so healing.

Hi Donna! I know all to well about flying the coop! I did take a month off last year in November, but it wasn’t all for me though I went to Texas to help out a few friends but did enjoy the time away.

Of course I did have my computer along but I did go a few days without checking on things. Yes, The benefits of being an internet marketer, this would never of been possible if I had a JOB!

Thanks for sharing your story and I do wish you luck with finding your dream home.

    Chery 🙂

You are right Mrs. Donna, the word Internet marketter always seems to become blurry in the eyes of most people, they count IMs as jobless people…

Trust me internet marketting is one of the work that gave you easy access to own your business and not the other way round..

Am Glad you enjoy your trip….
    Warm regards

Thank you for your kind words Temilola,

I did enjoy my trip and now I can see my business in a new light. I had so many decisions to make I just needed to walk away and get refreshed.

I was tempted to check in to my business, but stopped myself and walked on the beach. It sure done me good.

This is great advice and I am living proof! I recently took a week long break from everything and I must say that my love for my work has grown. I was given a chance to miss it 🙂

We get so caught up in our business we tend to forget to enjoy life and like you said sometimes we just need to fly the coop.

I live in Houston so I’m used to the heat and humidity but I would love live near the water.

I’m glad you’re get away did some good and I hope you’ll show us some pics of the places you fell in love with. Glad you’re back too!

      Hi Corina,

So you “flew the coop” too. It is great to just shut the computer down for a week isn’t it?

We come back with “fresh eyes” on our business and can get a clearer picture of how we are going to handle it.

Pictures will follow when I choose the exact place.

Donna, Congratulations on finding a new home! I bet it was great getting away to Maine with your hubby! I agree that its really important to find balance in your life and make time to do personal things like go to the movies, visit the beach, go to a spa, or take a mini holiday. Doing this allows you to recharge and relax so you can come back with renewed energy and excitement for your business. Thanks for the great reminder.

      Hi Shelley,

I am completely renewed. I also feel like my entire life is changing. I love that!

I have to sell my home first and it is a blast. We are doing it ourselves. We are using a flat rate broker instead of the conventional way and put a sign out. I had six people come in one day! Wait till it hits the MLS….I’m accepting bids on it.

We talk about “posturing” ourselves in business. It is the same thing selling my home. What a blast!

    Hi Donna,
Flying the cope sounds like a great idea.
I’m building my internet marketing skills for the very reasons you mentioned…working anywhere gives you such freedom.
Hubby and I are on the opposite end of the temperature spectrum..we like it hot. We live as far south as you can go in Alabama but we also love the Yucatan, Mx.
I’m so happy you regenerated and rested your mind..I can’t wait to see the product you have to offer.
    Cheers,

      Hi Tonya,

I sure did get a break and the weather was amazing. It was in the low 60’s and overcast just the way I like it. I used to be a sun-worshiper, but I find myself loving the beach in the off season.

My mind is clear now and I also found two perspective homes to purchase.

Hmmm Alabama? I don’t go south of New Jersey lol. The heat just gets to me. Although, I do like a mid winter break in the Islands.

    Hey Donna,

Great that you took a break and through this post you took me a while for Southern Maine(feels bit refreshed). I thought it is in India people see differently when we say we are internet marketers but in western countries too this kind of attitude! quite surprised me…

So from now on I will see that Business doesn’t own me but I own the business.

Many Blessings to you and happy weekend too.

      Thank you Vijesh

I think it is the same wherever we live as internet marketers. The work can consume you, or you can have control over it!

Coming back I can review things and make a clear decision of things I need to focus on.

      Thank you,
