Relationship Marketing With Get Response

Here is a real life story of a marketing lesson I’ve learned from doing business with Get Response.

We hear about building relationships on our blogs all the time.  That’s the best way to market yourself, your products and your services.

Sounds right.

 

I think we’d all agree that relationship marketing is the way to go.  That’s a pretty vague thing though, when you think of it.

Make friendly chat, impress people with your expertise or special knowledge, let them know you care about them and want to help them achieve their goals (which also helps you achieve yours, of course).

All of these things are a part of relationship marketing.

But what does online relationship marketing actually look and feel
like?

I’d like to tell you about something that happened to my husband, David.  I think it will give you a little more concrete idea of how to do some relationship building on your blog.

David and I both subscribe to Get Response for our autoresponders.  David attends their webinars and visits their blog from time to time.  Recently, he left a comment on one of the Get Response blog posts. 

No big deal, pretty common stuff, right?

He would have forgotten all about it, except a week or two later, he got an email from them thanking him for his comment, and for adding to the conversation on that particular blog post.

Nice touch, right?

So, you think… very nice to have someone recognize your input not just by replying to it in the comments section of the blog, but by going an extra step by emailing their thanks, personally.

But that’s not all.

They even asked for his physical address so they could send him a Get  Response t-shirt.  Wow!  He loves t-shirts, too.

So, sure enough, another few weeks went by and he got a package from Poland.  It was his t-shirt from the Get Response home office.

Now what went on, here?

Not only did Get Response make a personal contact to thank David for his comment (think Gary Vaynerchuk: “The Thank You Economy”), but they gave him a tangible item to cement that relationship, PLUS, they got his physical address for possibly future contact via direct mail.

And why not?  You never know when somebody might shut down the online world… lol.  But even if the internet remains alive and healthy, direct mail marketing is making a big comeback these days, and don’t think they don’t know that at Get Response.

One more thing, here.

Get Response is a big company.  Pretty removed and aloof from the many, many people who use their service.  But for the price of one little email (zero dollars), and a simple little t-shirt (minimal cost, for sure)… they just made a big company look like your next
door neighbor.

Now, that’s relationship marketing at it’s best.

    Hi Donna,

    Glad to know about some good things about GetResponse from somebody who uses it because I am an affiliate with them although I use Aweber personally.

    I use Aweber not because I don’t like GetRespone but it is because I started with a trial on Aweber first and I stayed with them because I liked them since. Later I found GetResponse great as well and so I also recommend them to a few of my clients and they seem to be happy as well.

    Moral of the story I think is, those who serve their customers well, always succeed and get more business 🙂 isn’t it?

    Nothing builds loyalty like great customer service. It’s so easy to get caught up in bringing in new business that you forget to treat your present customers like the gifts they are.

      We as marketers must NEVER forget that! And when being online marketers, if we find a company or service that has wonderful customer service, we can blog about it or put it up on the social sites to give them credit where credit is due.

    And I had the opposite experience with AWeber. I had a unique opportunity to get 1000 people added to my list who were opting into my newsletter that was being promoted along with 8 other newsletters on SelfGrowth.com. Aweber would not allow me to add those names to my AWeber account, even after I spoke to several people on their staff and literally begged. They could not treat me as a valued customer, just one of their many customers, no special treatment regardless of the unique circumstance. That forced me to open an additional account (I chose Constant Contact – a company that has wonderful customer support) and this created an additional expense.

    Left me with a negative attitude toward AWeber.

      I have heard many stories like that with AWeber. When I get that sour taste in my mouth with different companies, I just gets me so mad!

      Not everyone stands behind their business nor goes the extra mile. But when I find someone that does, I do blog about it and give them recognition.

    Great stuff here ! Thanks for sharing.

    It gives so much idea. Actually I just went over to Ryan blog and he mentioned that we can create newsletter and then send to subscribers to build relationship. I have tried using newsletter and it definitely improved the open rate and after reading your article, I will look for more ways to build relationship with my subscribers.

    Am using Aweber.

    What a great story! That little gesture from Get Response went a long way! Look at the kudos you are giving them for recognizing David! Receiving a tee shirt may not seem like a big deal, but what a great way to solidify a business relationship.

    You are right about direct mail. It is getting more popular these days. Isn’t it interesting how everything works in cycles? Take care.

      Yes it feels like a full circle with direct mail! But it is a wise decision to capture actual addresses of our email lists so we can send a small token of our esteem to them.

      Whatever the case, I’m more mindful now of supporting this idea.

    I use GetResponse and have been using them for about two months. I just used their customer service department about a week ago. I got great support and can’t understand why Aweber is so much more popular.

    GetResponse is awesome, yes, I am still learning the ins and outs of it, but it is easy to get around. If I ever have any questions, all I have to do is contact them.

    Your post will help me take a look at how I am building relationships on my blog.

    I support you point to the fullest that building relationship in blog-o-sphere is the numerical source of a successful bloggers, and one of the best way to show-case, and get exposed in the community.

    Creating cordial relationship will definitely brings in more customer and that is more sales if peradventure what you offers your readers are the best.

    If only more companies would realize how what they do gets shared. You are blogging about this. People will share it.. the story gets out so it is just part of their marketing budget to send David a t-shirt. Good marketing I think.

    Mailchimp sometimes does that as well, but I am not sure if it is just certain people they recognize as influencers, or if it is truly a random thing.

    It is definitely great to get a response back from a big company. I get them often, and on occasion, I send out my own emails to random.

    Anyone who hasn’t adopted this, might think of trying it once a week or twice a month to begin with and see how it goes with their readers or subscribers.

    What Get Response did was such a simple thing but it had a huge impact on you and David.
    A lot of people think they are invisible online but you never know who will notice your efforts.

    Wow, that is a good lesson to learn. I work for a small ISP and that is something I can use for our marketing efforts here. What they also did was got free advertising too. Every time he wears that shirt, they get advertising for free. Not bad, but nice touch from Getresponse. I am so stealing that idea for my day job. Thanks Donna!

      I love that idea too! I just had to write about it because we can be mindful of doing something to appreciate our readers. Also, we can apply capturing real addresses to send something in the real mail. That is a good way to grab attention for your business.

      Well I always was happy with Get Response. Their customer service never let me down.

      Just one comment on their blog, an email and BOOM a T Shirt gave us such a good feeling about them.

      As soon as we received it, our wheels started spinning….Hey we should do something like this too! Not the T shirt per se, but a simple acknowledgement to my readers.

    Very impressive! 🙂 I have a similar story happened a year ago for writing about a service on my blog too. I couldn’t believe it, but I really loved what they did and practically I started loving that service more and more. Still I’m a fan of it 🙂

    Now this is definitely giving me food for thoughts Donna 🙂 We can surprise our readers in different ways, as you you implied, even by sending personalized email or greeting card. I would think about it for sure 🙂

      A small token of appreciation goes a long way. I do love Get Response, and when my husband commented on their blog, they sent this T shirt.

      Of course my marketing mind started spinning. I thought it would be great to share this story with my peeps, because we all need to be mindful of paying it forward …

      A simple email of appreciation can stick in someone’s mind forever. I will apply this once I’m all settled.

    Hi Donna,I read your post and then was interrumpted before I could comment. So here I am again.

    Well, your story was very interesting and you wanted to know how it all ended.That was such a great move from get response. Who wouldn’t be touch my that. It does make you feel good.

    When I first became a platinum writer on EzineArticles they sent me a mug with their log on it. I still have it on my desk right in front of me. I thought that was cool and you’re right, it’s great marketing.

      It is a great marketing strategy not only the gift, but to capture someone’s real address. Email can be sketchy and we cannot rely on only one way to engage with our customers.

    Donna if more people would hand out a promotional item for visiting their blog it would surely help my business as I sell promotional products. It doesn’t have to be a t-shirt which may cost you about $10.00 with your logo and then factor in shipping if you purchase a cheap shirt. There are so many inexpensive items that will keep you name in front of your users. Recently I sent a water bottle to a person that met through blogging. She helped me get up my new blog. I had written a blog about drinking water and she responded. I am sure she will never forget me and I made a good contact.
    Another personal touch is the email. Although many people feel they are already being bombarded with emails and spam mail. I like to hear a thank you. It does make you feel special.

    Hi Donna,

    That’s an amazing powerful story on how relationships are supposed to be built. I enjoyed reading it.

    Relationship building is an investment of your time that pays off for years to come. It is about making yourself available to help others; a mindset of “what can I do for you to assist in your needs?” People do not like to be sold, they like to be heard and their needs addressed.

    Nowadays with social media, businesses have to change their focus and concentrate on building relationships with people in order to empower their brand and build lasting relationships that pays off on the long run.

I got a chance to meet him a few months ago and it’s very nice to know that there is someone on the other end that is listening. That it’s not all about the money. In today’s world, we should do business in a sense where it benefits both parties but not only that, develop strong relationships that will last a lifetime.       I just love Gary Vaynerchuk! My favorite book is “The Thank You Economy” and I heard he is a really nice person.

      True, business is not about the money in as much as it is about the exchange of relationships. It’s a stronger bond and I just love doing business that way!

    O-M-G! Getresponse is amazing… That little effort that they put into buying your husband a t-shirt and posting it over could have very well secured you guys as lifetime customers for them! *I sure hope aweber sends me a t-shirt soon.. haha*

    I remember purchasing an online product once, and the owners of it actually sent me a couple of books to thank me for my purchase. It is still very clear in my mind, because this is something that few people are willing to do.

    To take that extra step, to make their customers/prospects feel extra special. In this day and age where everything seems to be online, even a postcard would be extremely meaningful.

    Well, this is a story that I am definitely going to remember and possibly tell in the future. 🙂

    Donna, that was an awesome story. I think the intention of social media and other sites like dating sites, but they are sometimes further isolating or dividing us because you can say one thing and that will either make you look like a good person or show some unrealistic character flaws.

    A person judges you in those few sentences you write. Sometimes we get caught up in going with the majority few no matter how much of a contrast it is to our views.

    Welcome back and what a punch for a comeback. Great story, great idea. Many times I’ve thought of trying to reach out to customers by sending my contacts a sample or gift but always determined it would be too expensive or not be not appreciated.

      Hey Barbara,

      First I want to say Thank you So Much for the Coffee. I tried one pack and it is awesome…now that is a lot to say from a coffee drinker! Because I’m still packing up, and living with boxes, I had packed it away to make a fresh start in my new home.

      Yes, I just had to share this marketing tip with everyone because not only is Get Response a great company with awesome customer service, but they captured my real address.

      Now I have attended a workshop months ago that suggested we capture addresses so we can send some snail mail out to our customers.

      I have noticed many companies are doing this. Even a post card that makes you a “special customer” and gives you a code to receive a perk.

      Maybe sending out samples would be too costly, but sending out a percentage off is a good idea. Or just email the person asking if they want a sample. It would save time and money because that stuff is too expensive!

    1. Email people personally to thank for their comments? Never thought of. In the beginning it is easy to do. When the number of people increases beyond a particular level it becomes a chore. Maybe if I can send these kind of messages automatically… . Then yes, it would be nice.

    2. “Shut down the online world”! WOW!! What a dark dream. Please world don’t do this. Let internet be at least for another 5-10 years. 🙂

    3. How do I try to build relationships on my blog?
    As a beginner I am constantly searching for efficient ways to do this. Apart from blog commenting and answering to comments I think of creating a kind of personal newspaper with paper.li. This will bring to my readers new and fresh content every day.

      I have been finding that there has been an increase in snail mail from internet companies.

      I see it more and more each day. Capturing real addresses is a difficult thing to do, but I feel like it is a great way to acknowledge our customers.

      We can not only do business online, but send an actual card, gift, or something to make them feel special.

      I don’t know my future plan yet, but my wheels are spinning….lol

    It is sorta sad when we write about getting good service. It should be the norm and so often it is poor.

      Yes, think of all the free press Get Response is getting because I shared my experience with them.

      Besides the T shirt, they are a great company because their customer service is quick and efficient.

      We love them and by this random act of kindness, they are reaching more people than ever.

      We have to acknowledge a company when they are doing good. But on the other hand, if they weren’t people would be complaining all over the place!

    Absolutely! That’s exactly how relationships are built 🙂

    I enjoyed the little story and what really made the difference was the little effort they made to reach out and connect with you, which touched your heart – as it would anyone’s for that matter I think.

    I think it’s the same with our blogs, or even the blogs we visit. Say for example, if we send a personalised email or even a simple message of concern, say for example to someone who might not have posted for long, or not visited your blog for long, for nothing else but out of concern, it would only be a good gesture and would also make that person feel so good that you care. It does show your love, concern, and care for others.

    I wouldn’t know about relationship marketing, but I do know that it’s one of the best ways to make your relationships stronger. Not to mention, that little effort doesn’t cost you anything other than a few minutes of your time, but gives so much in return.

      A little extra effort reaching out to people doesn’t cost you a penny!

      Showing true concern to others can make a big impact on your business. It can be a personal email or reaching out on Facebook.

      I had a random gift sent to me for Starbucks coffee from a fellow blogger because she knows how much I love to drink it.

      It was a thank you…and it left such an impact that someone took the time to notice I love coffee! Of course our relationship has grown stronger just from that!

    That is awesome Donna…I love it when companies take time out to reach out to their customers just to say thanks and when they go the extra mile like they did, it leaves a great impression.

    More so because I use Get Response to, so I know I’m dealing with a great company 🙂

    Your story did inspire some ideas of my own :). I had thought about coffee mugs with my logo on it…so they can think about me and my site while they sip their cup of Joe 🙂

    I like the idea of asking for a physical address…I think Adrienne also asks for a phone number to add that personal touch too…

      This has been an inspiration for me too. That coffee mug idea is awesome!

      I think it is a great way to capture people’s real addresses for marketing purposes. I find that I get more and more snail mail lately from on line businesses.

      My wheels are turning of how I can apply this to my business also.

    I’m impressed, and actually I had a similar experience with them. In my case I gave the free trial a run, but realized I just had too many things going on to deal with learning a new system (and it does look and feel very different from Aweber) so I decided not to go ahead and join at that time. Got the typical follow up email so I briefly explained why and that the timing just wasn’t right. I then received the nicest email telling me they look forward to welcoming me with “open arms” whenever I decide to go back for another look and that they would be happy to help me with the transition. Wow! I haven’t made the shift yet, but between that and now reading about David’s experience, that will definitely be happening soon. Thanks for sharing Donna!

      Hi Marty,

      I have always used Get Response and had the best customer service when I needed it.

      But here, going above and beyond with a simple T-Shirt, gave us the feeling of a caring company.

      Sometimes it just takes a little extra step for customer care.
