Keeping it Positive

This post was most recently updated on March 26th, 2014

Keep It PositiveWhen you are on your social media sites, I’m sure you frequently see discussions and threads about politics and other controversial topics.

For the most part, these conversations are negative.  Do you jump into those conversations and give your views, or do you sit silently with your own opinions and just let it ride?

Sometimes we can get so passionate about a subject that we want to speak out and give our opinion.  But you always have to stop and wonder whether your comment will help or hurt your brand.  How much should you share on negative and controversial threads in social sites?

I say Keep it positive!

No matter what is going on in this ever changing world of ours, controversies will happen.  Some things go viral and it just hits our passion point.  That’s because we all have our own varying belief systems.  So what do we choose to say?

You see, we need to hold ourselves back from jumping into anything negative, no matter how passionate we get.  You could get involved in controversial topics when they involve your business, as long as they don’t involve anger and negativity.

Remember, positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative.  This is the basis for the Law of Attraction.  Keeping things positive on social media will ensure that you are attracting positive people and positive messages.  Once you wander into negative discussions, you’ll start attracting a lot of negative people and negative messages.

So I strongly recommend that you keep your mindset in a positive place.  Put out positive messages on social media sites, and involve yourself in positive discussions.  When you do, you will attract folks who are mostly positive.

Now, let me ask you a question:

Would you want to work with people who are positive and eager to learn, share and grow with you, OR do you want to fight an uphill battle of engaging routinely with those who carry negative energy that drains you and either bores or angers your other friends?

I’ll tell you from experience, that folks who radiate negative energy can think you are the best thing ever when you agree with them.  Over time, though, you’ll start realizing that the same people expect you to always agree with them, and always be ready to jump into their fights and support them.

They often come to depend on you, and expect you to do everything for them.  They might play the blame game and blame each mistake they make on you.  Even worse, if they are negative in their social media conversations, they are sure to be negative with you, too, eventually.

Social media is where we meet and greet our friends, share our blog posts and even our products.  Whatever you say is going to stay there forever.

So, don’t ruin your brand by hanging out with negative people and consuming your efforts with angry conversations.  Stick with your positive friends, and focus on sharing positive, inspiring, informational and entertaining content.

Many blessings,

Donna

Excellent and extremely practical advice Donna!

And while it’s extremely easy to give into lots of the negativity that you find, both on and offline!
As you so wisely pointed out, it’s best to remain above the fray and just stay positive!

That way, as you pointed out, you’re far more likely to attract people of like minds and
    values!

That’s some great and extremely practical advice!

    Hi Donna,

I think I missed this when I was on vacation 🙂

What an awesome post on positivity! I consciously choose my surroundings at all time because I believe in the power of association. If I am not careful, it can take me in any direction and I may not like that.

So, I control what I listen to, who I associate with, what I spend time reading and what I am doing – as much as possible. Yes, there are times when life happens, things go out of control. But the idea is to get back in control as soon as possible.

Positive thinking takes effort unlike negativity which is automatic and everywhere. Thank you for this great reminder.

    Regards,
    Kumar

Sorry about that. Your comment says it all. We do have to make that conscious decision about who we associate with in our surroundings.

Reading is a good solution to get back into the control!

Yes, we can find faults in every situation which is easier than searching for positive things. That is why most conversation is negative, just look to our media for the lead.

However, if you live a full exciting life. You will wake-up excited and eager to find good in everything. No, it is not easy and yet challenging.

I choose to support all and change their situations with being positive and encouraging always. Their attitude will change only when they are ready and hit bottom. Being one who never gives up, is due to my attitude of finding goodness in everyone and thing.

Great share! Donna you are key to our balance with such articles, Well Done…

But once we ourselves are positive, negativity just bounces off of us doesn’t it?

I’ve seen some comments where I thought of jumping into but then stopped. Some of the emotionally charged comments are trouble. So I just stay away from it. When you get to really know someone, then you can share more. The thing is, the words you use, and how you use them are open to potential misunderstandings. So you have to be thoughtful, careful in what you write, and considerate.Staying on the positive side is the best.

This is a tough topic, but you always handle it so well, Donna.

People always comment about how positive you are, and that’s so true. Not only that, but that positive attitude is absolutely infectious. You just have a way of making people feel good about themselves. That doesn’t come from making nasty little comments and snippy remarks.

I guess when you hang out on social media as much as you do, though, your heart is bound to be on display, and people get to see the type of person you really are.

Oh Donna love how you tackled this topic…it is a tricky one as branding for your business is important…yet sometimes telling it how it is, is necessary… my take on this and it is always changing is if for example someone has posted something highly opinionated on FB bordering on hate which sadly they often don’t see it when they think they are being political – I ignore them and don’t get involved…if it plays on my mind I see how I can channel that energy into something like a blog post…a comment that is thought provoking perhaps but on brand…certainly avoid anger and arguments as you say and i have to say there are some who seem to want to create those situations…which is shocking and hurtful but hey ho – you can walk away and ignore them…never waste your time with people who are time wasters….! Happy New Year and thank you for such an inspiring blog!

I won’t answer the conversation on FB, but rather turn it around in a post.

I also agree that some people like to shock others. Well I can see right through that – as you can too- lol Never get involved with that one!

    Hi Donna,

what an explicit piece of content!! I love the phrase and quote you used here ” positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative”.

Over the years, I have come to understand that negative minded people no matter what you say or do, they will never follow in your vision and set objectives; there is nothing like having people and team of like minds.

I quite agree with you on the relevance of social media in this; the use and presence of social media gave more impetus and power to being democratic, what we say and share stays there!!

For example, when i was about launching my new SEO consulting blog, some pessimistic friends discouraged me because they were not seeing what I am seeing. it got to the point that they hardly picks my call because I was consume with my new found love in blogging.

Thanks Donna for sharing this inspiring and insightful post.

    Donna,

You are right on point with staying away from responding in a negative way. I feel that what ever once decides to interact no matter the subject be yourself and that will always guide your choice of words. You find the common ground per say and locate a positive thing to share.

We all have our insight on a given subject and interaction is what blogging is all about. Being on a Social location is different and it it is one that they strive on negative junk maybe it is the wrong location for you? I mean we can not be members of every Social location which would run you to thin to make a difference for all the worthy causes you decide to become involved in.

The good thing about us is we have choices to engage with people who conversation on positive things to improve understanding on a given subject for that week. Take it serious yet just interact to the point that makes your understanding of the core message and you can never go wrong with negative stuff. Do not allow the feelings of others make your choices to speak your mind. People respect those of us who speak based on experience and truth. I do not say things to gain agreement yet open peoples’ eyes to see it through my prospective. That is what we interact for and keep coming back to get more stimulation with people who will stand their grounds no matter the cost.

Donna, you are one of our grounded insightful people who has always spoken your mind no matter who may feel different and cause a negative share. We can agree to disagree and move on…

Oh yes, agreeing to disagree is wonderful! But engaging with negative social media stuff is like reinforcing it for me.

On the social media platform, I wouldn’t waste my time on something hateful, or anything negative.

However, on a blog post I can comment my view. But I don’t find many that are negative. Maybe its the power of the Law of Attraction or just dumb luck. But people I engage with on blogs don’t carry negativity.

It’s not all a bed of roses sometimes, but it is open for a good discussion and that I will do.

I sometimes jump in, but a lot of times, I stay out of it. Politics gets really passionate and sometimes ugly. It’s just better if you do jump in that everyone hopefully agrees to disagree, rather than change each others opinions.

I think the best thing to do for anyone negative is to handle it on a per issue basis. If it looks like they’re trying to drive in support, you don’t have to respond. If you want to respond and put your opinion, hope that the person respects your opinion.

Great advice – we have a rule in our business – NO angry clients.

That’s the surest way to be a former client of ours.

Sure things go wrong and we all get disappointed and frustrated from time to time – but taking that frustration out on vendors, clients, friends, and colleagues is not OK

I’m not trying to surround myself with pollyanna type people – everything being rainbows and unicorns – because things do happen that are unpleasant, distressing and uncomfortable – what I want are relationships with people that when bad things happen they pick themselves up, work something out, and move forward.

I agree Donna, if you are using social networks for business purposes then you need to maintain a certain distance from controversial subjects. It always surprises me the extent to which some people publicly share personal information and opinions online – things they would normally only share with close personal friends.

I don’t want to feed into them. By posting about it and then by adding my comment or clicking on the political link, I am adding to the negativity surrounding that. So I prefer to read the beautiful posts about our super-human potential for love beyond all understanding and our amazing internal power to create our lives exactly the way we choose.

EXACTLY! I too just skip over them. I like Facebook posts that have value. It can be something like you mentioned above, or something funny that makes you all warm and fuzzy inside.

I too like to reinforce things that show us that internal power we have to create our lives exactly the way we want.

    Interesting topic, Donna 😀

To be honest, I hate social media discussions.

The main reason is that they are just discussions, no further actions.

Yeah, it is great to discuss what the problem is about, but what is the use of discussing if you aren’t even going to do anything about it?

There are some topics that I do want to join, want I try to stay away from it, because the fact is that more I try to justify my own views, the more I help others to strengthen their arguments (I can never convince another person that he/she is right/wrong until that person decides to leave me behind what they have been taught and accept that they could be wrong. But, not many people are willing to do that).

I do agree with your points on our reputation. We really don’t want to come off as a negative business (unless we can afford to lose a lot of our potential customers).

Anyways, thank you for the interesting discussion, Donna 🙂 Hope you are enjoying your weekend!

      Hi Jeevan,

Thanks so much for putting such value to this conversation. I feel the same way you do.

In essence, we cannot convince anyone of their values. We can respect them and agree to disagree.

Putting it on the social networks, just causes trouble and yes, we can lose a lot of our potential customers!

I agree with your idea of being positive and only hang out with positive people. Great words to live by in 2014. Thanks!

Oh it is so easy to get caught up in political stuff, especially these days! I’m at the point where I don’t even discuss it with family members because it just isn’t worth it.

Putting it on line will only get into issues that will enrage us more. Plus it ruins our brand.

This is a perfect topic right now Donna because in the last day or so there has been a few FB posts that I was SO tempted to jump into. I swear there are days when I am so tempted to create an online alias just to be able to fire back with my real feelings. In the end I agree that it’s better to take the high road – that said I have today unfriended several people who posted comments that I personally find offensive and barf worthy.

    Donna,

With all that his happening in the world keeping quiet on some subjects just ain’t gonna happen. There is just too much at stack and we’ve never had a platform like the Internet from which to express an opinion or make ourselves heard.

Keeping it positive, this too can be a challenge. With American civil liberties the target of certain political factions it’s difficult to say the least to express oneself in a positive manner.

Your point is well taken and I shall strive to keep t in mind the next time something stupid comes across the screen.

I do get the picture and it is very difficult for us to not get involved in politics. It is a hot topic and we sure feel strong about our opinions. I know I do…but I’ll never tell lol.

That’s the challenge..and the point of this post! There are so many things I am tempted to comment on or write about. But as the old saying goes “keep away from politics and religion” because it only causes conflict.

Takes a lot of self control these days to do that.

I do have to check out the 2013 Darwin awards! lol

Hi Donna, oh yes, positivity is the way to go! Negativity can really drag you down and those around you. I try to avoid it like the plague. It really can make a difference in your life. When things are bad I usually don’t post on social media – maybe just share others stuff and keep low key until it passes.
I also remember that anything you write online can be seen by anyone at anytime, it’s always good to think about that before you go off on something. Excellent topic Donna. Hope your weekend is going well and that you have yourself a Merry Christmas!

I wrote that this topic could not have come from no one else but YOU my friend… you are such a positive person, no wonder this is in your mind and love to share with others so they also can be aware in case they do not.

I see being social means to be positive.. it is very easy to be negative, actually as many people always love to say, we live in a negative world.. I do not like to say that but I like to say that we have choices and why not chose to be positive and increase the positive vibrations?

It is amazing how I witnessed instances where someone point out some positive news or topic in a negative way… and I feel pity for them because I can tell they have no idea they do that that simply because they are sued to do it.

Hope I have friends like you around so in case I slip out .. for certain I will receive a positive reminder to stay on the positive roadways…

Thanks for sharing this great post Donna,”

      Hi Nick,

Thanks for your wonderful comment! Yes, some people say we live in a negative world, but if you are negative, you will only see the negative. And that’s not such a happy life!

Staying positive will attract positive people around you. I noticed on social media that people will complain about politics and of course I don’t blame them if they are hurt or angry about something. But we must not put it on social media if we are in business.

No matter what our viewpoint is, we have to have the positive mindset to be in a good positive world.

Understanding how important is to be positive and spread positive vibrations in the world is not as easy as we say it.. BUT I know with some effort, it is possible no matter what is the situation.. because in order to have the negative side we always have the positive right opposite to it..

Just as light and dark.. we can say that the day gets darker and at the same time we can say that soon the days will get lighter earlier (just as you pointed out in one of my article comments that you made 🙂

Yes, as you mentioned, it does not matter if we are in business here, there is people that love to bring the negatives of the government socially… wasting their precious time that they have to just forget about that negativity and focus on the positiveness that exists in front of them.

Thanks for be as you are Donna.. and I only want to say.. Keep Smiling.. life is beautiful 🙂

Yes there is that polarity of positive and negative. Can’t have one without the other Eh?

And staying positive is something that is a learned behavior. We have both feelings inside of us.

It takes a good learning curve and a lot of discipline to keep it positive.

Once we apply that to our lives, it gets easier and easier.

To me social media is really not the place to be negative or the place to tell about things that are really personal and can make people wonder if they should be doing business with us, like talking about our politic opinions and so on.

For sure if we are negative we are going to attract negative people and it’s going to snowball for sure. Who want to be on social media to do that?

Thank you for reminding people to stay positive on social media. Some really need this type of reminder.

    Hi Donna,

I agree with Arleen that you absolutely radiate positivity. I probably don’t spend enough time on social media to get hooked into this type of conversation, because I haven’t encountered anything like this yet. I think it’s important to be honest, but I entirely agree that you shouldn’t do anything to fan the flames of hatred or aggression. It’s not just what you say, but the way you phrase things that can make the difference – a negative, hostile tone should certainly be avoided and I guess if you feel so strongly about something you’d find it hard to keep your temper, it’s probably best to stay out of those debates.

You make an important point about the fact that what we post on social media is up there for ever – it’s a sobering thought. Over here a few people have already been successfully prosecuted over libellous tweets, and one young woman lost a very high profile job because of stuff she’d posted on Twitter, so if you’re not careful, your intemperate posts could cost you more than a bit of bad publicity.

Great advice, Donna – spot on 🙂

I have passion too, and I can talk about it with friends and family, but never on the social media platform.

If anyone has a negative tone, I just ignore it. I like and comment to many people out there that have something funny to say or to share something of value.

    Hey Donna,

I prefer to not talk about politics or religion online or offline. We all have our own thoughts about these topics and we’re all pretty darn passionate about them as well. Most people are always so eager to change our minds when we all know that’s never going to happen and that’s when the arguments ensue. It’s so not worth it to me Donna.

Now some people will tell you to talk about a topic that is sure to bring on some controversy just to bring attention to you. Once again, I don’t really feel that is who we are as individuals if that’s what we need to draw attention to ourselves.

I’m a pretty positive person and I’ve learned over time that I’m drawing mostly just positive minded people to me as well. We all get in the dumps from time to time and we all get upset over things that are going on. It’s not that we have to ignore it but as you said, how important is it to you to speak your mind over this one thing and have it hurt your brand in the long run! I’ll just keep it to myself thank you very much.

Great topic and I hope it hits home for most.
