Persistence For Online Success

https://www.donnamerrilltribe.comI’ve spoken about the importance of developing the right character traits required to achieve online success.

One of those traits is persistence.

I’ve worked with a lot of people online who have had varying degrees of success, and persistence is a character trait that every one of them developed.

In this article I’ll explore a bit more in depth, the significance of developing persistence if you are seeking online success.

Persistence Defined for Online Success

Persistence is the ability to move forward toward your online success, despite setbacks, disappointments and obstacles you encounter.

Have you tried to build up a business opportunity through online network marketing efforts?  Have you attracted only people who join your organization then never follow through developing their business, though?

Have you tried to get your blog to “catch fire” with lots of social interaction, conversation and shares?  How about getting your posts ranked high in the search engines?

Maybe you’ve decided that the main reason to blog is to build a list of eager prospects and loyal followers, but you’ve only been able to build a tiny list after 6 months of effort.

There are so many obstacles you’ll encounter as you seek your online success that I can’t begin to list them, here.

The bad news is, every one of us runs head first into these obstacles virtually every single day.

The good news is that there are always ways to overcome these obstacles.

While you will need to learn those methods and strategies for overcoming all the stumbling blocks to your online success, you will only be able to navigate those learning curves through persistence.

It’s Not Enough To Learn The “How-To”

Many of the obstacles you’ll encounter won’t even revolve around learning the right things.  They’ll be more concerned with your ability to work through setbacks and disappointments, even failure.

Let me tell you a little story that may seem fairly insignificant, but speaks to the importance of building up the important character trait of persistence.

The “No Excuses” Path To Online Success

Persistence means essentially one thing.

No matter what your setback, inconvenience, failure, or other difficulty… you must move forward toward your goal each and every day.

There are no excuses for getting sidetracked or sidelined… none… ever.

You must be laser focused on achieving your online success at all times.  You must take the actions that will move you forward in that direction each and every day.  Nothing can stand in your way or hold you back.

That’s the essence of the character trait we call persistence.

Without developing this character trait, you’ll find online success to be very elusive, if not impossible to achieve.

Do you find that practically every day you have to overcome little stumbling blocks like the one I spoke about in my video?  Have you been sidelined by bigger and more difficult obstacles?  I’d like to hear how you move forward in the face of such difficulties.  Have you developed the character of persistence for online success?

Don’t be shy, If you have something to share please do in the comment section!

Blessings,

-Donna

Love, love your video Donna (coming from someone who does not view videos on blogs because I read MUCH faster).

We small business owners must practice creating small results, then slowly scale up to larger results that matter to us. When we do, we usually find that the difficult becomes easy and the complex becomes simple. And successful results emerge. The top athletes love what they do and willfully practice and persist. It is true in any field. Success comes to those who love what they do and practice persistently until they master it.

P.S. I do have a wig to wear when the hair does not want to cooperate 🙂

      Hi Rachel,

Fancy finding you here in this old blog lol. Glad you liked that video of mine. Took some courage to do because of my bad hair day…but wanted to make a fine example of how we need to persist no matter what!

I do have a wig or two but when I tried it on, I looked worse he he he!

Thank you for adding such value to this post.

Hey, Donna, you need to do what the stars do – keep a wig or two around! You are kind of on the same track as me: getting that mindset to keep going. Persistence is such an essential trait. I’m pretty persistent when I’ve found the thing I want to do. We used to call it stick-to-it-tiv-ness. I don’t think it’s being taught too much anymore, which is a shame. You look beautiful even without your hairdresser, and I hope she makes a quick recovery.

    All the best,

      Hi Leslie,

I like to lead by example so I just had to make this video. Some folks think my hair is OK, but I didn’t. I do have wigs by the way and tried them all on. They are too stark and didn’t look so good….so they are going to goodwill. lol.

Persistence is the key. As long as we have that in our mindset, we can deal with our business in a timely way.

My hairdresser is fine and I seen her just the other day! Guess my selfish prayers for her recovery worked he he he.

    Excellent post Donna!

And I liked the message you shared on your video as well. Thank for sharing and explaining the fact that everybody starts in the exactly the same place!

And it’s what we continuously do or don’t do that’s ultimately going to make all the difference.

Far too many otherwise perfectly capable small business owners, seem to think that successful people had it handed to them!

Or that they somehow side stepped temporary setbacks! When clearly have not!

When truth told, many successful small business owners simply refused to throw in the towel!

And if it took them five or more separate tries at different business ventures, before they became successful, that’s what they did!

And yes at times, there were and are going to be many temporary setbacks! I’m just glad you shared part of what it takes!

      Hi Mark,

Yes, we all start at that same place! When looking at those who reached “success” you will often hear their story. They will usually tell you how many times they tried something and it didn’t work out.

But, the difference is that they did not throw in that towel! They kept on trying and that always leads to success in any shape or form.

We all are going to have those setbacks, it just is part of life. But it is how we deal with it that makes the difference,

      Thanks for your input!

    Donna,

You are a true role model to just put yourself out there, to deal with the obstacles and not let them stop you. You are just doing it – no matter what. And your hair does not look “awful.” You still look great.

Just this past week, I looked at 6 new videos that had been created at the retreat I attended the week before. I do not like the way I look in the videos. The shots are too close-up. They emphasize some of my flaws that are not so prevalent if you see me in person. I let the videos sit quietly in a folder for a few days and then, finally, I just posted them on YouTube and said to myself: “What the heck. This is how I look.”

    Warmly,

      Hi Dr. Erica,

I know what you mean by putting your videos in a folder for a few days. The good thing is that you put them up on YouTube, with a good attitude!

It’s a funny thing about our videos. I can look at myself and be super critical. But that cannot stop me. I need to go on no matter what.

That’s the message here for some folks that let things like this hold them back. Although some may say my hair doesn’t look awful, I thought it did, but carried on my responsibilities.

      Thanks for sharing your story!

With part curly and part dead straight hair every day is a bad hair day for me 🙂 It is not that that holds me back from showing myself on video though.

Persistence I have in abundance, although some might call it obsessiveness. I view my past online marketing failures as learning experiences just as I do the successes. I have had occasional short term down periods, mainly when others have let me down. I bounce back quickly because I am doing what I enjoy.

I admit to getting sidetracked from tasks but not the overall goal. If there is something new to learn off I go and read about it which is useful but not the best use of my time.

I agree with you Donna, persistence is a huge trait needed to see success online.

Some weeks, I seem to run into one problem after another and nothing is working out for me. I ask myself why I am beating my head against the wall.

Then I read a blog or interact with someone or offer help to someone and I see a glimmer of hope. Then I remember why I want the online success…not for me but for my family. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t mind it myself 🙂

And that is enough to give me a good kick in the butt to move forward with another dose of strong action and persistence.

Having a great mentor has also helped me to stay on track and help get over the obstacles that trip me up.

Thanks Donna for another great relevant post!

My personality fits what is needed to get things done. I am very persistent. I am one who doesn’t give up. Sometimes I will drive myself nuts. I have also realized many things that work that keep me going. It is called the serenity prayer. I do not drink but still think this applies to everyday life.
    God grant me the serenity
    to accept the things I cannot change;
    courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Your example in the video is that you could not change that your hairdresser wasn’t available, so you didn’t waste energy. Instead you pick up where you left off and continued with your goal. A great way to live.

Ahhh The Serenity prayer! I say it all the time. It gives us a great way to look at life and strengthens our selves.

I say that when I’m stressed and it always works! No, I could not change my situation, but I’m driven. So why let a bad hair day ruin my production schedule?

I just had to illustrate this to my readers because I hear too many “excuses.” Now, If I can do 15 videos to produce a product that I made a schedule for with my bad hair, anyone can! lol

      Thanks!

Love this topic! There are several words that are frequently used for having the will not to give up. Tenacity is my personal favorite and I just wrote about it earlier this morning. But regardless of the word we choose to use, you’re points are spot on Donna. The one mistake I see people make is misunderstanding that persisting is not about doing the same thing over and over just to be doing it – it’s about learning and growing, adjusting the sails and then moving forward strategically. I do not think your hair looks that bad by the way! But it is good for me to hear you think it looks bad and still did a video. I am more like Adrienne and if my hair is off I do not shoot. I also have been really really bad at not wanting to put on make up every day. Not sure when it started as most of my life I wore the corporate suit and full make up.

Persistence is all about keeping it moving which is what you did. Half the time, other people don’t notice what’s going on with us anyway, so I couldn’t have noticed your hair until it was pointed out to me. And I still thought you still look great by the way.

What I’ve learned is persistence is that it does sometimes just take a minute to take a breath and keep on moving. After years of working our business, we are still in the game and that is what is important.

Thanks for sharing your video, your day and showing us first hand, how persistence is what helps us make our success.

    Hey Donna,

This is a topic that all beginners should be required to read about LOL.. I tell you, just from my experience that I’ve had so many set backs and there have been many times I wanted to just give up. While everyone seemed to be moving faster, it seemed like I was getting the short end of the stick!

But you know what? I’m glad I have gone through these set backs. When I think about it, how could I have learn all the things I learned now without them? When I run into set backs now, although they can be quite frustrating, I’ll ask myself, what could I learn from this that will propel me? I also think that if I didn’t learn from these set backs, then I wouldn’t be able to move forward. It would be almost the equivalent of quitting.

Thanks for sharing this topic and the story in your video! Have a great week ahead!

It’s very easy to sit back and take life easy, but if you want to achieve something, you need to go all out, leave your fears behind, come out of your shell – and just do it! I know it takes a lot of will power, but if you are committed and dedicated, anything is achievable.

Speaking of myself, if I don’t time myself and what work I have to do when, I’d never be able to get anything done. But it’s my persistence to write twice a week for my blog, complete my writing projects, divide my time and spend a little on social media, see to my family and kids (and dog too!) that keeps me on my toes, and going ahead. It’s more of a commitment you make to yourself to get things done by keeping everything else behind while working. ‘

Loved your video and the idea of the white board – a nice way to remind yourself of all that you need to do 🙂

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

      Hi Harleena,

I know you are a mom and a fantastic blogger. You have managed to balance out your time effectively.

Yes, once it comes down to commitment, it gives us the push to persist in our daily lives. We all have to achieve that balance.

And yes, it is very easy to sit back, but that creates a “danger zone” of a bad habit. It is true that we have to leave our fears behind and come out of our shell as you put it. It does take willpower.

All these components help us persist and get the job done!

Oh that white board! It’s my brains behind me. I write on it every day and filmed my video with it behind me as a subtle message to all that we need to write things down in order to put all those components together to get a job done. Glad you noticed that!

    Hi Donna,

Yes, to make it online takes a lot of persistence. Things rarely happen from one day to the next. At times you hear those success stories of people who seem to have made it pretty fast, but for the most of us it takes time and perseverance.

As you said, we can’t let thing stop us. How many times I’d rather take a nape or even a break rather than write my post, but if I let that happen, except for extreme situations, it could even become a habit to skip post, and I can’t let that happen.

Successful people are persistent, that’s just the name of the game.

I hope you’ll get your hair dresser back 🙂 and thank you discussing this important topic.

      Hi Sylviane,

Great point! There are so many times I would rather take a nap, or go out and do something fun, but it is true…it can even become a habit to skip a post. We cannot afford that can we?

And yes, there are times when there are extreme situations that tear us away from our usual routine, but we can bounce back.

Indeed, successful people are those that have persistence in their character.

You are much braver than I am Donna, much braver.

Yeah, I’m still one of those that will not get online or video when my hair looks like crap. Most people might think it looks that way anyway but oh well. Just like today, I took a shower last night and I do my hair in the morning but it’s very humid today with a few rain showers coming in and trust me, my hair hates the humidity and it’s very obvious. Urggggg

But I don’t let that stop me from what I need to do because that has nothing to do with my business but your example is spot on though. Sorry, just got carried away a little.

There will be things that will crop up all the time and some of them are like a big punch in the stomach. While we’re all not perfect and we might get hit a time of two it’s okay to let the wind get knocked out of you but regroup and get back to it.

No one is perfect and we all make mistakes and things can happen like with your hair dresser ending up in the hospital. They are unexpected things that just happen to us so we need to know that it’s not the end of the world or our business, just keep on going. Things will eventually get back on track.

By the way, I hope your hair dresser is going to be okay bless her heart. That’s horrible!

Great message Donna and you still look just as beautiful as ever! 😉

      Hi Adrienne,

Yes, there will always be things that come up from time to time that will get the wind knocked out of you. But with persistence, we do regroup and get back into it. I do remember all the trouble you were having in the past, but you always bounced back up. You sure do have that Persistence going girl.

Yes, even though my hair dresser wasn’t able to keep her appointment and it was my scheduled week to shoot tons of videos, I did have to do it all with a bad hair day.

I could have chosen to make the excuse that I was having a bad hair day, but no…the decision was made to press on!

Thanks for the compliment Adrienne, but I’m still waiting for her to get back on her feet.
