Blogging For Network Marketers

This post was most recently updated on October 7th, 2014

BloggingNetwork marketers need to build teams.  Teams of customers, but even more importantly, teams of sales reps or organization “down-lines”.

Team building is why they’re be engaged in network marketing to begin with.  Yet, they’re frequently content to settle for a company website or the “company replicated blog”.  That’s a big mistake, though.

The whole concept of a network means that you need to reach out to lots of people, and interest them in what you are doing.

If you’re building a team of sales representatives in your company, as you would be in a typical MLM or business opportunity, you have undoubtedly been exposed to “warm market” techniques.

In fact, I consult people all the time who are taught by their sponsors and up-line leaders to develop their warm markets before they even try to do anything else.

That means, you’re supposed to talk to real people offline, in the real world.  Talk to them at the family picnic, on the grocery store line and anywhere else you can think of.  Some team leaders tell their down-lines to “talk to 5 people a day” or some such thing.

The idea here, is, that to build a relationship based on trust and likeability, you must talk to somebody person to person.  Even if you develop “cold” networks, the ultimate goal is to get people on a phone call, a three-way call or even a home party or meeting of some sort.

While warm markets are where you want to be to develop a trusting network, you don’t have to focus on friends, family and co-workers.  You don’t have to roam grocery stores and malls looking for prospects.

Network marketers can easily approach cold prospects, grow them into a cold network, and warm them up real quickly.  This can best be done with blogging.

Blogging is a great way to convert perfectly “cold” strangers into a “warm” market real fast.  In fact, you can warm these people to your message and pull them onto your team even more easily than you can interest friends and family.

I meet with clients, followers and perfect strangers quite often.  Because I am a blogger (whether or not they’re familiar with me), cold folks warm up to me real fast.

Here’s a little snippet of what I’m talking about.

Blogging is definitely the place to be for network marketers.  It’s far more effective than family picnics, and probably a lot more fun, too 🙂

In fact, one of the best ways to build a real business with your blog is through network marketing.

You can learn more about how to build a business with your blog on an upcoming webinar that I’ll be co-hosting with David.

The webinar is a paid event, but it is free to VIP Club members (as all our paid trainings and courses are).

You can check out the VIP Club here.

So, here’s the bottom line.

If you are a network marketer, it’s time to find out why blogging is the best platform for

  • growing you business quickly
  • grabbing a steady stream of leads and prospects, and
  • converting them into a warm market by implementing just a few simple strategies.

Understanding how you can leverage the marketing power of blogging will save you tons of time, energy, expenses and good old fashioned angst.

I’d love to hear if you’ve made blogging a key to your network marketing strategy.  What successes have you had, or what challenges have you encountered?

Please be sure to share this article with your friends on your social share sites.  I always appreciate that!

Over the last few days I’ve been in the process of writing down what I want to accomplish with building my business and figuring out what steps I have to take to get there. I want to share this process with people and blogging is the best platform for it. I certainly believe the fan base that you build will treat you as an authority on a subject and will give something you recommend a shot.

I enjoy your posts as always, Donna. Look forward to reading more and applying your wonderful expertise to my own business.

      Hi Melanie,

I think that sharing it is great! I always say that blogging is a continuous process of growth. Sharing what you are doing will spark an idea for someone else.

And yes, it is all about planning things out. On our blogging journey, there are twists and turns, but as long as we keep at it, we become better and better.

I remember when people were saying to build relationships with 10-20 people a day on Twitter… not too much different… lol. Wait I was saying that too. I felt like I was listening to my dad back in the day when he was showing the plan for Amway….lol

      Hi Nile,

Oh my, I could never get into that MLM mentality like Amway! Building relationships naturally is more to my liking. Get 10 people a day…yikes, the thought of that makes my tummy hurt.

Real relationships come slowly and last much longer.

When I’m “just walking around” I don’t see people… I see goldfinches and wildflowers. We are 25 minutes from the nearest town, and an hour from the city, and our one vehicle is used by my hubby for work. So I’m a little isolated here. Even so, blogging done correctly is a great way to build relationships.

    Hi Kyle,

Glad you liked the video. Yes, it is amazing when we mention what we do to others. I find that lots of local people will have websites that they are not crazy about. With your knowledge, it is a great way to help them out.

Web development is a great way to reach out to those you meet that have an off line business. They really don’t keep things up and your service will sure help them. It’s a win win situation.

    Hey Donna,

Loved watching the video and hearing your story about you networking with people. I have recently been getting into web development for people and have literally been doing this. I just mention to them if they have a website and many times they either dont have one or arent happy with what they have. It is motivating to hear other people are doing the same thing as me! 🙂 All it takes is mentioning it and then most times either the person is interested or may know someone that is!

Donna, I just love you and Dave!

You have this, Ora about you. The attraction with being a person who listens and takes action, is a great plus.

I love that you agree with being a person to get outside. That, alone will make a huge difference in everyone’s life. You are not out to sell stuff. Just meet people and allow the natural process of interaction, take place.

My goal is to meet just one new person a day. I can not stay in the house and be online all day. I have ways to interact with people who I commit support to, when the time allows. I interest is in learning new things each day. The only way to accomplish that. Is to get outside.

There is a location online. Which, I utilize that shares all free places in Boston. That are designed just for the public. Entertainment and educational free event. I learn that each town and city has the same site online. So, knowing what is going on 7 days a week. You have at your finger tips.

Love what you do and only do what you love!

Thank you Donna for this reminder to get outside more and leave the computer to rest. The best method to promote anything. Is to find a way to support others in various areas. How, just take a step of introduction. Practice and get it done. Do not sell anything. Be with a motive to learn just one thing you both have in common.

Donna, you are meaningful and inspirational to me. Tell David, Bill says hello and looking forward in reading his adventures. He is so serious when it comes to techniques to enhance our total end results. Love you guys!

Thanks for all that luv…Same goes here because you don’t talk the talk, but walk the walk when it comes to your blog.

You are constantly providing good value to others and all from your heart. That’s the thing….When blogging, we can actually feel what that blogger is all about. Now, David and I have known you forever!

You have branded yourself as a person who likes to help others. Now, who wouldn’t be attracted to that?

Oh and there is that learning curve! Once we are bloggers, we do learn something every day.

BTW…you still in Boston? We recently moved to Southern Maine. If so, maybe we can connect.

      I’ll PM you.

Useful and very helpful to those who are network marketers. A blog is a discussion or informational site published on the World Wide Web so it’s better to use this for network marketers. Informative in a way that even first-timer network marketers can follow, and it actually has tips on why you should use blogging. I’d definitely give this blog 5 star.

Welcome to my blog. First timer network marketers can get quite confused when going online. Blogging is one way they can make some connections, providing they are writing good content, and only mentioning their product 10 to 20 percent of the time.

    Hi Donna,

People join you, not your network marketing company. This is true offline. This is true online.

I wouldn’t say that blogging is the best way to do anything (including network marketing) because I have examples of tremendously successful people who have no idea about blogging and they have way larger businesses than I do. In fact, my brother has a network marketing business at least 3 to 4 times larger than I do (although he is part of my team) and he has no idea about blogging.

With that said, if somebody is interested in building influence online, focus on personal branding so they have to hear less rejections as compared to those who have no branding, blogging is definitely the way to go.

When you build a brand online, no matter what you do, your changes of success increase multi-fold automatically. But then, I don’t want to discourage people who don’t have a blog (or don’t want to indulge with techie things) saying that they can’t build a successful network marketing business. The truth is, you can succeed at anything if you set your mind to. You just have to get your head straight and give it all you’ve got!

Thank you for announcing about your webinar. It is going to be awesome!

    Regards,

      Hi Kumar,

Thank you so much for adding value to this subject. Some people can do network marketing so well, without having a blog. That is so true.

But like you mention, having a blog is branding yourself. Think of all the people one can make relationships with just by meeting them on blogs and social networks!

When having a blog, people that may be interested in joining you can come to that blog and see how much content you write, and of course, there is that social proof.

      It can’t hurt, only help.

I believe I can continue being my self, making connections REAL connection and it will not be hard to market what I am offering.. it will be easy because I will be the honest, true self that I have always been haha 🙂

      Hi Nick,

I have no doubt in my mind that you will carry your honest character into marketing. You are there to help people.

To help more people, marketing is a good way to do it. When people pay for something, they value it more than if it is for free. I learned that a long time ago when I was studying to become a therapist (which I did not become…long story)

What sticks in my mind all the time was a professor who made the point giving your help to others for free will not be as valued as someone who pays for it. This man used to be so funny because when I used to go into his office for help, he charged me a nickle…just to prove his point.

Now, whatever you will be marketing Nick, will be of value because I know you well and you always come from your heart.

A couple of days or so I talked to an online contact who, last year gave up being a rep with an MLM company because of lack of results.

He joined something else and this time bought warm leads from the company, a few of which did convert. That has dried up now and asks for ideas He still resists my suggestion to blog, saying he doesn’t have the time and his program has great capture pages anyway.

I tell him that everyone else uses the very same capture pages and he needs to stand out from the crowd. If he carries on doing what he did before he will fail again. I know he is more than willing to help his downline but there has to be some evidence of his helpful nature online. You might have online contacts who follow you into a business the first time but few will join you a second time if they’ve lost money before.

Even having your own static website isn’t enough to convince people to trust and follow you. You can only do this via an attached blog. In addition it’s much easier to get search engine authority for your site if you are updating it regularly with blog posts.

We only have to look at your posts, comments and number of shares, Donna. It shows that if you help others and successfully encourage dialog, with a blog, then you get support in growing your own business.

Having our own blog is the only way to go! We share value, talk to our readers, have conversations not only in our comments, but take it to social sites.

Once we prove ourselves with our blogs, and have interesting conversations on it, people can only see that we are dedicated to sharing what we know.

You sure are a great leader in the field Sue! Thanks again for adding so much to this post.

    Donna,

You are so right. I have belonged to a local networking group here in S. Florida and I backed away from it because I would be inundated with invitations to buy a product, attend a webinar or live event, or get private coaching – all of which I had not interest in because I already had my own coaches and my plate was full. However, if they had just been willing to meet for lunch, as some have, to chat for awhile and get to know me and tell me about what they are doing, I may have gotten interested in what they are offering.

For me, the connection and caring comes first. Everyone is not a dollar sign to me. I love seeing you in these videos and I am excited about what you are teaching and offering to others.

      Hi Erica!

I feel the same way as you when you mentioned that “Everyone is not a dollar sign to me” because it is so unrealistic.

I rather make good relationships with people. If they are interested in my product, great! Some who are not, did pass it on to others and by the good old word of mouth, people have been coming to me.

I rather have it that way than to badger people to buy buy buy! It’s just not part of my personality. So having a blog with good content, captures people’s attention and then loyal readers.

When they are interested in learning more of what we have to sell them, they will come to us.

Donna, I think having a blog is the best idea EVER! Especially when you have a Business.

When your business is online, your blog is your own personal office … in fact, my second home!

That is so much more personal than using a corporate website, for first contact, if you are in Network Marketing. It’s a bit like going to the corporate head office, whilst informative, it can also be official, predictable, and often impersonal.

Visitors to a blog, can get to know the owner, read what they get up to, and see what skills they have and what services they offer, not to mention the information and value they can gain by reading some posts.

Network Marketers should definitely have a blog so they can direct people to it, that is a great way for people to get to know you, which is always the first stage of recruitment (done the right way!)

And,once people warm to your personality in your environment, they will likely request a live chat if they feel attracted to you.

I shiver in my boots at the memories of approaching people to talk about my NW business …

    Yippee for Blogs 🙂

I market myself all the time, with one simple technique and that is ask the other person who are contact with, what do you do for a living. And yes I even ask woman. After they tell you what they do, they will usually ask you what do you do for a living. I can’t tell you how many people that I tell I sell promotional products, will ask me for a card and have called to place an order. One should network whether it is on the internet or standing in line at a grocery. I went to an obedience class yesterday and the woman next to me starting talking about her dog. I slowly moved the subject and asked her what she and her did for a living. Her husband is in sales and they both asked for my card. Who knows if it will turn into anything but it doesn’t hurt to keep putting your name out that. To me the greatest reward is when someone says. I have heard of your company. I also enjoyed your video. I think you do so well is your cheery personality.

Then it becomes our turn, we tell them and like I explained in the video, sometimes they will grab your arm and say “I need you!” Just love when that happens.

Your business is a great one for every business owner. I’m sure people are delighted using your services. Promotional products are used online, offline, and just about everywhere.

Sorry for being here so late, but for the past month or so, I’ve been totally overwhelmingly busy 🙂

I think you’ve made an excellent point, in order to sell anything, we can’t wait on people joining us, unless we join them, so to speak. We need to go look for people in our market and mangle with them as much as possible. That’s why it takes work.

It’s like as I was explaining in a recent post of mine about Linkedin techniques that one of my friends is using to build his data base; he reaches out to people. He can’t expect them to just fall on his laps. For sure I wouldn’t count on friends and family.

I’m sure your tutorial is good stuff and teaches people how to do this the right way.

      Hi Sylviane,

Oh you are not late girl! I know how busy you have been…that’s a good thing! I read that post about Linkedin techniques and it was great.

Yes, we must reach out to others in order to grow. And yes, it is hard work sometimes, but as long as we enjoy it, it’s not work at all lol.

No, I wouldn’t do the friends and family thing. I do have a niece that is always ending her conversation by trying to get me into her network marketing company. No matter how many times I tell her its not a fit for me, she is conditioned to sell me on it.

As a marketer, I do have to laugh…I keep telling her she is going about it the wrong way. But hey, to each his own!

    Hi Donna

    My topic 🙂

As you know i came online to grow my at the time Network Marketing business. I did the warm market thing a bit but it never made sense. I mean when we had conventional businesses I never asked my friends to become my business partners. Told them what I did and so if they wanted to be customers that is one thing but the whole concept of that is an interesting one.

I think the best examples of network marketers who are also bloggers are Ray Higdon and Dave Wood. Ray more so that Dave now as Dave is running a company but they have just given value to their readers and created big businesses.

I love your story and your video.

You look so good since your shift Donna.

      Hi Sue,

Oh yes, I know your story and also know how wonderful you are at business. You have been at it a long time and really know your stuff my friend.

I love Ray Higdon and also Dave Wood. Although I’m not part of their company, I do learn from them, especially Dave. He has gone through so many changes and never gives up on his business.

I’ve also learned as of this writing that there will be more changes coming. I think it is just great!

As a businesswoman, I do have respect for anyone in the Network Marketing field weather I’m in it or not. I like to observe the growth of Dave…that guy never gives up and is a fine example of what we need to do.

There are many that poo poo him, but I never understood why. He is to me, an honest person that keeps on going. I like to follow how he overcomes things all the time.

As marketers in the industry, we can never put others down, but learn from them weather we want to join them or not. We all have a path to follow that is unique. If one chooses to be in a network marketing business, one can grow.

      Thanks Sue,

Indeed, people are pretty skeptical when it comes to opting into a business. Our blogs provide good content and a way to show people who we are, what we know, and how we can help them.

When it comes to Network Marketing, blogging is such a great fit to earn trust and creates good relationships.

That was a great video and post. The fact that you and David are successful and comfortable enough that you don’t need to be in desperation mode!

You and David obviously have lots to offer anyone that’s serious about growing their business, but that’s doesn’t automatically mean you have to try immediately sell every person you meet!

Instead, your professionalism shined through and sold them more than any proven sales techniques ever could!

We also know that we do have lots to offer for those seeking to grow their business. We know it’s not for everyone….but whoever wants to jump in..we are here.

Great advice Donna. My experience is in direct sales but they are similar enough for comparison sake and one thing I definitely like about the model you’re talking about is having the flexibility to set up your own site and develop your brand. The company I used to work for (I was a district manager not a repr) only allows representatives to use company sites – in fact a repr risks having their account frozen or even closed for having their own website. The point being this is a valid business opportunity but it’s really smart to do your homework, take advantage of things like the webinar you’ve recommended and talk to people experienced in the business.

      Hi Marquita,

Yes, I’ve encountered certain businesses that only want you to use their company sites. And yes, they could freeze your account if having it on your own site.

But there is a way to get around that. (been there, done that lol) Having our own site, we don’t necessarily have to name the company with these strict rules. Instead, we can “hint” at it, and write about what we have learned (not mentioning the company) Then, in the call to action we can invite others by saying “if you want to know where I got this great information contact me” or something like that.

There are many ways to skin a cat!

    Hi Donna,

Great video. I agree that if we just took a breath and focused on building genuine relationships instead of trying to sell people on our business we can go so much farther. Personally, I am very open to buying from someone once I get to know them and feel a connection. If I am sold to immediately then I do not feel like we have a relationship, but instead a business deal of some sort.

Most people want to build relationships and feel comfortable before they buy from you. If we follow this rule of thinking it is way easier to bring them into our business and mentor them to do the same. And if for some reason they are not interested in what we have to offer no problem – you still have gained a new friend. That is how I see it anyway. Thanks for sharing 🙂

      Hi Neamat!

The answer is Yes, Neamat! The webinar will be recorded. We are addressing many issues and Network Marketing is one of them.

There is a certain way of telling people what you offer on your blog without being too pushy. There is a formula that many network marketing companies don’t teach. That is where we come in.

After all, I, as many of your readers would like to know what network marketing company you are in. You write great stuff to help others so why not tell them about your company?

Currently, I am working with some folks who are bloggers and have a network marketing company. We have been teaching them how to put it out there. Its all about that 80/20 rule.

    Hey Donna,

You can say this over and over again. When I was doing network marketing, although introverted, I was “chasing” people in malls, grocery stores, you name it, I chased them there LOL. But with this, I started to come out of my introvertedness.

Then I discovered online marketing, and then blogging. This was like finding the ark of the covenant mentioned in the Bible. I didn’t understand how some of the top earners were getting so many people outside our meetings in a month’s time until I discovered online market. Now when you add that with great blogging, you become a relationship magnet and eventually start plugging people into whatever you’re marketing!

What more can you ask for!

    Thanks for sharing Donna!

I know your blog is fantastic and you always are giving good content. If I didn’t know you at all and wanted to check you out I would go to your blog and say to myself “this guy knows his stuff!” I would be impressed, then join.

      Hi Barbara,

If you are involved in a network market, just remember that 80/20 rule! Why not tell people what you have to offer?

You can do it in many ways. A review is a great way to do so, especially in your title “XYZ Review” to tell people some advantages of the product and simply say at the end “if you are interested in this, just get in touch with me” Nothing wrong with that!

Why keep it a secret? When meeting people they will ask you “what do you do?” Besides saying you are a blogger, tell them you are an internet marketer. Put your marketing hat on, plan on certain “themes” of the month and they Pow…introduce your product.

When I say themes…I mean to talk about some benefits that correlate with the product, build up the interest then introduce the product to them.

Get the picture? Affiliates do it all the time. Why not you?

    Hi Donna
Blogging provides us a strong foundation to grow our business, our public relation and our credibility in our niche market. In offline world we can’t express ourselves due to various constraints. In a meeting we are allowed to finish our point in five minutes, in a presentation we are restricted to follow the timings of event manager but at our own blog we can not only express ourselves fully but do it with the purpose to support and promote what we could not have done offline.
That is why things get much clear when we introduce ourselves we do have a blog in addition to our other qualifications experience. They the try to screen our skills and vision with the help of our blog. If it is smartly managed and regularly maintained then mostly we need not convince further to our offline client for a business or contract.
Thanks a lot for sharing another wonderful post.

Thank you so much for your wonderful input on this topic. I too believe that our blog gives us the foundation to grow our business, our credibility, and who we are.

When a network marketer reaches out to someone, they will find out who that person is. Isn’t it wonderful that we have our blogs so that a person can see for themselves what knowledge we have, our social proof, and most importantly, we can build trust.

They can see for themselves who a person is by just visiting their blog. Of course, the blogger must do things correctly giving as much good content as they can for their readers. But must have a marketing plan too.

    Hi Donna,

Being a blogger for 3 years now, I sure have learnt how to network 🙂

Don’t ask me the marketing aspect, though I have so many friends who are network marketing and just as you mentioned, they are all doing it through their blogs. I guess it makes sense because you can interact and connect with so many people, turning the cold ones into warm ones..lol…I loved that. And this happens all over – you interact and you win them over with your charm.

You certainly have that charisma about you Donna, that others would open up instantly when they meet you or even interact with you online. I think when the vibes meet – you just connect! It happens so many times with me too, and I think such people gel well together because they can relate to each other, and the trust factor too comes earlier than the others.

Building relationships helps a great deal and some of these turn out to be such good friendships I think. I know because most of my good fellow bloggers are now such good friends, that includes us too, isn’t it? So, yes, it does work 🙂

Thanks for sharing, Have a nice week ahead, and wishing you the best with the webinar 🙂

I too have so many friends that are network marketers and are successful at it using their blogs to get to know people.

I like to look at our blogs as part of our business. As long as we are not constantly selling, burdening people with products, we can make great connections via our blogs.

On the other hand, I’ve seen a lot of network marketers not using their blogs correctly. When doing so, they loose readership.

I wrote this to network marketers especially because some need to know the etiquette of blogging. As I have been meeting more people, and teaching them, this subject came to my mind.

Yes building relationships can turn out to good friendships with our fellow bloggers. And that includes the friendship we do share Harleena. I am so grateful that we met.
