I want to tell you a story about how taking time out for myself during the past year has actually made me more productive. Even though I now have more work than ever, I’m finding that I have more time to spend enjoying my life.
It was about this time last year that David and I started creating our first digital product. In the middle of it all, I had a strong feeling that it was time to move. The place I was living in was too large for us and it was tearing me into too many directions. Why do I have all these rooms in the house that I never go into? I wanted more than anything to downsize a bit and move to an area that was less crowded.
Now, we have been vacationing in Kennebunkport, Maine for years since I’ve always loved to be by the ocean. So I asked my husband to pack it all in and move there.
Now, he thought I was nuts because we were just in the beginning phase of our production schedule. I didn’t care, though, I just kept feeling a pull that couldn’t be ignored. He gave in, and to make a long story short, it took us 4 months to complete the moving process.
I was elated to give away just about everything I’ve collected to a good cause. And believe me there was a lot of stuff! All the while, I was fulfilling my soul with time for my Self because it just felt so good.
I managed to keep my business afloat during my big move, which wasn’t so easy, but I got the hang of it. In hindsight, I realize that this was the beginning of a new lifestyle for me. And that, my friends, is the essence of why I started an online business in the first place. To create a lifestyle that would be more akin to my spirit and talents.
The house we purchased is perfectly situated on a quiet street, nestled in a forested area that is about a mile off the ocean front. It’s a newer home than I had been living in, with less upkeep and more importantly a huge fenced in yard for the dogs to play in. It was even big enough for me to start a veggie garden. All we had to do was move in, plug in and Voila… we were back in business and even had a nicer home office to top it all off.
We finished our first product during our first winter in Maine.
But our first product is not the end, just the beginning. We created a couple other products so to round out what’s been, so far, a very nice performing sales funnel. We’ve just begun a roll out of our members only “VIP Club” and that means we’ll be creating even more products on a regular basis. If you have never been involved in digital product creation, all I can tell you is that it takes a lot of planning, a good marketing strategy and most of all… a cache of time to spend with new folks coming into your business.
Since I’ve been dedicating so much time to new customers and clients, blogging and social media have taken a smaller block of time on my daily calendar.
So, you might think I’d be getting overwhelmed by it all.
But I have not.
Now, that there is more to do than ever, instead of pushing harder, I am actually taking more time for my self. I’ve developed a new sense of freedom and improved lifestyle. I’ve abandoned the good old white board to do seemingly trite things like:
- go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week
- enjoy a four day jaunt to attend my step-daughter’s wedding (see my article “How To Deal With Going Offline For A Week”)
- take time off for holidays (see my article “Entrepreneurs Have Holidays Too”)
Boy, I’ve really enjoyed getting away from my computer and going swimming a few times a week. I didn’t realize how much I needed the exercise!
The beach calls my name (it seems) every day. I can either walking on it, or just sit in prayer or meditation to the sound of the ocean and smell of the sea. I am even taking time to read more books (paper versions, and not business books lol) as I sit by the sea. Well you know what they say about reading…one needs to read every day to achieve success. Never applied that so well as I do now.
Having an online business you will always hear the buzz about creating freedom.
When you do it right, it’s true.
You will be free to spend time with your family, your friends, free to choose where you live and enjoy yourself. For a blogger, it’s all about writing, teaching and living your passion.
I’ll write about ways I’ve learned to manage my time better another time.
Suffice it to say for now, that taking time for my SELF has allowed me to focus more sharply, get big chunks of work done in small amounts of time, and run my business more effectively.
What about you? How is your lifestyle going? What things are you doing for your SELF?
I would really like to hear your story,
-Donna

I love how you get out there and lead the way for all of us. I’ve been thinking a lot about this – and like you am tired of working until the wee hours to get things done. Not sure that digital products are for me – but there’s something that will be the right fit – got to open my mind and schedule/allow some quality time with myself – and then just see what comes out of it.

I do work a lot and I have created digital products like you so I know how much dedication, work and time goes into it. I have been really trying to find more time for me so that I can enjoy all the beauty and joy that life offers. I am getting better with it and it makes me so happy and at peace. I know how hard you have been working. It does require lots of attention, but so do you! You are the tool of your business and in order for that tool to be sharp, you need to take time for yourself.
Start with baby steps. Take an hour a day and do a little something. After a while, it will become a habit.
I think that the more we create, the more we need that time for us!
By the way…I purchased your book Deliciously Holistic and am having a blast with it. Now your detox book? I do have to get on that one!

Hi Donna! I am always in awe of how clear you are about what you want. You don’t let anything stand in your way and that’s exactly why you’re now enjoying the fruits of your labor.
I couldn’t agree more with you about taking time for ourselves. It’s so important to our overall health and productivity. I find stepping away gets me energized and eager to come back and take on my next to-do. It’s the days that I don’t step away from the computer that I feel frustrated, tired and overwhelmed.
You are an inspiration to make the most of the time we have!

Thanks for your kind words. I do know what I want…sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes I can be annoying lol.
Taking time for ourselves is imperative if we want to be productive. I must admit, in my early days, I so passionate, that I loved my laptop and took it with me. Then there came the IPhone, and although tempting, I kept it at home when out and about.
Now for the past year, I have been more productive than ever. The more I have to do, the more I go out and play. Work hard, play hard? Hmm maybe!

I absolutely agree that taking time for yourself increases your productivity. On the surface, it seems like it would take time away from all the stuff that has to get done . . . but when you care your yourself and achieve a sort of “balance” in life, you actually get more done. This happens because you’re energized and cared for as a person and because you actually focus more when it is time for work/business.
Leanne Chesser recently posted..Are You Tired of the Word Authenticity?
Hi Leanne,
You said it all in that comment! Once we take care of our selves, we do get that “balance” in our lives.
Our work is great and we can be so passionate about it, but we do need that diversion. Even if it just for a small time in the day.
This is how we can become more productive.

One of the challenges I have faced over the past few years is taking time for myself. I have been my mom’s primary care giver for several years. Last year, I began exercising 4 – 6 days per week and view that as “me time”. Taking that time for myself has become very important to me. It’s a great way for me to start the day out right and I can really feel the difference in my mental and physical well being when I skip a couple of days in a row. I only wish that I was as fortunate as you are to live close to the ocean! To wake up each morning to the sound of the waves and the smell of the ocean would be wonderful.
Hi Sharon,
I know how it is being prime caretaker for a parent! Over the past several years my husband and I took care of his parents. Now, I have my mom living with me. It is so much easier that way to keep an “eye on her.”
What I learned as a primary care taker when my father-in-law was in hospice at home was to take breaks! Even though he was dying, a care taker needs their strength and the ability to get out and totally focus on what we are doing. Exercising is a great way to create your “Me Time.”
As for living by the beach….I need water around me. I moved from living next to a huge waterfall to the ocean. Both are awesome!

Well all I can say is one is far more productive when one takes the necessary time to self ‘medicate”… and that’s not with drugs!! It’s take=ing the time one needs to be selfish for oneself so that production is at an all time high when one is working.. I for one… don’t do enough of it.. But when I do, I know how productive I am!! Glad to hear you’ve had such a fantastic year!!

It’s pretty interesting, how doing less can actually result in greater results.
We’re conditioned to pushing and pushing to get to where we want, buts sometimes, when we back up a bit and focus on ourselves instead of our “goal”, things just start coming to us.
I know, in your case, that while you’ve backed off of some “push”, you’ve allowed the “pull” effect to kick in.
I think a lot of that happens because backing off some of your “chores” has freed up more time and energy to interact increasingly with your clients in a more personal way. When you do that, good things just start happening… as you are well aware.
Thanks for reminding us all to re-examine some of our daily priorities.

One thing I’ve been doing a LOT more lately is reading novels and listening to audiobooks. For a long time I felt I could not justify the time it takes to sit down and read a novel. But my passion is writing, and I’m told that I can’t write if I don’t read. And apparently all the reading I did in my bookworm past doesn’t count. I have to read NOW.
I’d gotten away from reading for about 15 years, partly because of a lack of time, and partly because I would fall asleep whenever I sat down to read. And then Nathaniel reached Gr.7 and decided he wanted to be homeschooled again. For the past two years we have cherished an hour together each night at bedtime, when I read aloud to him. I’ve gotten reaquainted with many of my childhood favourites, as well as some really challenging ones I’d never read before — like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, by Jules Verne.
Now I’m branching out into reading for my own sake, and I think it is going to help me to write the kind of stories I’ve always wanted to write.

I had my own “Sea Change” nearly 3 years ago now. It had been planned for years but I needed to be in suburbia while my kids went through school and uni. The change was a nightmare because of all the renovation and updates I made to the old house before I sold. I had hammer and paintbrushes and spades in hand for months. I did not try to build up my business like you did Merill so you have my admiration.
The move is a decision that I’ve never had the slightest twinge of regret about despite living in my old house for over 20 years..
Although I love walking on the beach and seeing the ocean close up I don’t do this a lot. We too are in a forested area not far from the sea on a hill. Instead time out for me can simply be sitting outside and enjoying the always different sea views or watching the mist rise from the trees below. I know I shouldn’t be so sedentary but find that trait hard to change.
I enjoy the work I do online and willingly work long hours. I have learned my limits though and if I start feeling stressed I can drop what I am doing straight away, shut it from my mind and relax. I know stress affects how productive I am. Coming back to it with a fresh mind and attitude works wonders.
Taking time out can create stress of its own if you are thinking of all the work you need to do. Your post shows how productive and beneficial time out is, and that you don’t need to feel guilty for doing it.

Hi Sue,
Wow.. you have undergone so much with your move! It does take a lot of time out re-doing one home to move to another. When I went through it all, I didn’t do stuff myself, I just left things “as is” because the location was in a hot market. No one cared what the heck the place looked like, but wanted the location, so I was blessed.
I did maintain what I needed to do while going through that move. Surprisingly, I got it all done…BINGO..I was working smartly!
I think its great that you take breaks, without guilt. Sitting in the forested area watching the mist rise from below. It is food for the soul!
A long as you take time out without guilt, you are doing fine.

Your story is not new to me since I have been following you for a while and so I pick up peaces here and there.. but I must say.. this time to wrote it in such a way that it is a simple as it can be for everyone to “get it” that taking time for our selves is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF LIVING… yes, you are in business and so you added that part very heavily but since I am not as deep into business as you and David.. I like to share that this
Time Out for Ourselves” is essential for every one..
My two boys (now grown up adults with they own families), are starting to get it as well.. and if they forget, I am always there to remind them (which they detest it haha 🙂
I was forced many times to take time for my self.. and that is when I realized that is the best I can do for ME hahah 🙂 and so I keep doing it often.. (I know you will say to me.. I know, I know, I have been reading it in yoru blog hahah 🙂
A simple example of how I am taking time out will be shared here and now……. just happen a few minutes ago (smile) I was writing this comment and heard some Canadian Gees flapping their wings in the river below.. so I took my camera and start talking pictures.. there where tow families with probably 10 little one that were following the example of their parents.. what a beauty.. This is the essential part of life. We can be in the middle of things, but something as simple as noticing geese flying by, is far more important to capture that moment with your camera than finishing writing a comment.
It is important to live like that. Why else are we here? To put our nose to the grind stone and never look up?
There are too many life moments we need to stop and take advantage of. This only brings us joy and a healthy lifestyle.

Hi Donna,
I am all for LOTS of time out I learned many years ago that when stressful situations go unresolved, the wear and tear on the body’s biological systems increases. Fatigue and damage become inevitable and the body’s ability to repair and defend itself decreases significantly. This puts the body at risk of long-term injury or disease, right? Well, what better excuse to take LOTS of time off LOL.
Besides globetrotting, I have several techniques that I use to naturally reduce my stress level: spa visits, walks, laughing, etc. There are endless possibilities for natural, fun ways of reducing stress. It is important that we take time out regularly to unwind and regroup.

Donna,
You have certainly blossomed in the past year. It shows in all aspects of your business and your life. Moving when you felt called to do so. I am moving again, to a new location, about 20 minutes away from where I am now. Although I do have a bit of anxiety, a sense of not knowing how everything will go, I am also excited. The new place is even more upscale than where I am currently living – and newer. It is all on one floor instead of being a 2 story townhouse. For me, it is a sense of renewal and an opportunity to expand my business in a way that has not yet been possible. The environment, and the Feng Shui, makes a huge difference. So at this time I am discarding some old files, reorganizing and preparing to take those papers filled with ideas from the past few years and create new books, ebooks and products in the year ahead.
Thanks for being a continuing inspiration – your style, your warmth, your authenticity and your success.

Oh I do love to work online also. But there is so much one can do. We need not take a formal vacation to create Me time.
It can be done right in our own home or back yard. Or even an afternoon walk or drive. Whatever it is, taking time away will re-focus our time on line.
I moved to “vacationland” so this way all I have to do is step out of my front door lol! Saves me time too 🙂

Hi Donna,
Congratulations on your move and your product creation. Believe it or not, being online working is my “me time” too. I have to make myself take breaks. I do look forward to the time I can take a few trips to a couple of places that I have always wanted to visit.
Have a great day. Monna

Hi Mi Muba,
It is a pleasure to know that this post I wrote has helped. If we keep doing the same thing over and over again, we end up in a standstill.
When we take time for ourselves, and focus only on what we are doing at that time, it does clear our minds.
Then when we return to our computer, we are refreshed, full of new ideas and can see things in a different light.
As an Entrepreneur, we are our business. That being said, we are the tool. We need to take care of that tool with good nutrition, exercise, and taking time for our mind/body/spirit.
Once incorporated, and it becomes a habit, we can see our business in a different light.
To me it is like looking at an impressionistic painting up close….you cannot make out what the painting is unless you stand back and take it all in.

Very inspiring Donna and I couldn’t agree with you more! There are many things I love about being an entrepreneur but working from home and being the commander of my own schedule are at the top of the list! The morning hours are my most productive and I am normally up and writing by 4am if not earlier – some days I power on until early evening, but I’ve become very attuned to my body signals and when I’m not firing on all cylinders I take a break – go to the beach, take a walk with my dog, spend time reading – because I know that I’ll be producing better quality work once I’ve cleared my mind. I’m less inclined to keep a set schedule just because that’s my personal preference – maybe that’s a result of all the years I worked on a short leash in the corporate world – but If I need to take a day off, I do it without guilt knowing I deserve it. Congratulations on all you’ve accomplished and thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Marquita,
Thank you for sharing such an encouraging comment. You sure do know how to listen to your body! And that is the most important thing we need to do as commander of our own schedules!
You have a great understanding of not burning out. This is what folks need to hear…the examples of taking a walk with your dog, going to the beach, or to a park, and of course, spending time reading.
You are proof of the pudding my friend because you know that when you get back, you can produce more quality work.
Thanks for sharing,

Hey Donna Merrill
Though I have commented on this post at social media but its topic again dragged me to fully read this post. I have now made up my mind to plan to do anything not relevant to my both morning and evening job to give sometime to myself.
I can feel the pleasure you got during taking time for yourself. We must remember our productivity level remain at standstill if we don’t change our way of living both for short and long term. If we spend each week in same way our weekly output will obviously fall. We can’t observe it in first or second week. The heaven falls on us when it accumulates and then we can’t do something to offset the shortfall.
Once again thanks a lot for sharing this awesome post which changed my way getting engaged in my work.

Hey Donna,
My time will come when I’m not in front of this computer 10 to 12 hours a day. I don’t have a David to help me with stuff but I will. I see things on the horizon and it’s coming my way for sure.
I’m so happy for you and I can also tell that you’re just in such a more peaceful place. I know you weren’t happy and were so eager to move and things just worked out the way they should. Now we all need to take a page from your book and get to that place too.
I would love to take strolls on the beach. Right now my walk is around a neighborhood and there are just so many different directions I can take. Yep, same routes for the past five years gets really old but walking is good for the soul and it’s nice to get out with Kayla and Mom.
Have a great week and I don’t doubt that you will. 😉

Yes, I am too sensitive to energy and where I was living changed, so I moved on. Each time I move it gets better an better.
I can tell you that the best thing we all enjoy here is living in vacation land. We haul my mom in the car and go out for jaunts. You understand how important it is to be with your mom. As they get older, we have to appreciate every day they are with us no matter how spunky they are.
I am also so grateful that David gets along with her so well. He drives her around any time she needs.
It is great having her with me. When our moms reach their 80’s we want to spend time with them every day. I know you do and how you treasure your mom. Same goes here.
Well you have yourself a good week girl,

Hi Donna,
The life you describe is exactly the life I’m going for! We’re thinking about moving and hope to be in a new home by this time next year. It’s not by the beach like I would like but it’s close :).
I can picture you walking on the beach or just sitting in prayer…that is the life isn’t it?
You’re post was motivating at best. It tells me that hard work most certainly pays off. I think it’s exciting that you and your husband work together. I know I won’t have that but I hope to do well enough that he won’t have to work so much and we can dedicate our free time volunteering and being more hands on at church.
I wish you all the best with your products and I’m especially looking forward to the VIP Club!

Yes, some hard work, prayer and faith is a great mixture to obtain what you want. I couldn’t do it without my faith.
Gosh, I haven’t volunteered in such a long time and I miss it. I used to volunteer my time at a food pantry in my last residence. What a rewarding experience that was.
We brought my mom with us to live. So right now we are taking care of her, and doing something special each day. She is not in good health and I just want to make every day count. I am blessed with taking care of her now that she is “getting on” with a bad heart.
But she’s a busy lady…yoga, events at a senior center… I like to take her on some jaunts to see the different landscapes around the area. She always loved the beach so we take some short walks with her there too.
Blessings,

Great Post and I envy you like the rest!! I am so happy for you that you fulfilled your dream of becoming free and creating the lifestyle you wanted for yourself.
That’s what got us all in this industry in the first place but we don’t know how to create the freedom for ourselves. We are working hard not smart, I think. You figured out how to work the smart way instead. I so much look forward to your post about how you did it and I need to learn not to feel guilty to take time off for myself.
Great Post indeed, because life is made to be lived and enjoyed. Great Job Donna!!

As I acted upon that, I found more time for me. After all, I am my business, so I need to take care of mySELF!
Glad you enjoyed this and please don’t guilt yourself!

Hi Donna
I like some of the others have said can see you are more relaxed and you just look alive!
How you accomplished so much with a move it beyond me but well done.
The beach sure gets you. I just read Sylviane has not seen it for a couple of years. I cannot go a couple of days. I would wither I am sure. The seaside feeds my spirit.
I am guessing during the process of the shift you learned to focus on the work that was really the necessary work and let somethings go. I am a great believer we should have a “not doing” list as well as a to do list. It is so easy to get caught up in stuff we do not need.
A great post Donna and I love seeing the evolving new you.

I did “shift” around a year ago when I was making that move. Priorities became important to hang on to my blog and on line business while spending most of my time doing that moving thing.
Then, when my first product was complete, the sales funnel done, and the marketing strategies all put into place, I learned how to prioritize even further. Marketing took precedence over my blog and social media.
I had to find a DMO to stick to so that everything can get done. What really became important was taking care of mySELF. Eating well, exercising and juicing gave me more energy.
So now I am a morning person…go figure lol. I get more done these days than ever before.
I have always loved the beach, but not weather that was too hot. Here, I have the best of both worlds. I’m liking it! Just have to re-adjust the outfits he he he

This is my first time visiting your blog and I must say I love it. Taking time for yourself is such a rewarding feeling. For me it gives me peace within. Sometimes when you “work for the man” you do not have those freedoms. When you are able to work for yourself and can attain such freedoms, there is such a sense of accomplishment in that.
Just being able to enjoy the moment truly can rejuvenate you and fine-tune your focus. Thank you for sharing.

Hi Donna,
You seem to be really having a tremendously exiting time while your business is also picking up momentum. That is like a dream come true you see!
I’ve been working harder than ever this year since i came back from India after my vacation and I tell you I don’t have any regrets. I wanted to make sure this year doesn’t go by without establishing a strong income source through my businesses and that goal really helped me get the resources and everything else that I needed to make it happen.
But came with it a lot more commitment, a lot more dedication and a lot more hard work which I am enjoying. I don’t think I am going to slow down any bit this year. But, I do plan to take break next year as things go on cruise control which aren’t yet there quiet yet.
Thanks for the motivation for making it happen to get to the fun level you are enjoying at the moment 🙂

Kumar
Kumar Gauraw recently posted..When You Hate Network Marketers, Why Use Their Proven Strategies
Hi Kumar,
Although I fully enjoy what I do, and am passionate about it, I did have to create a different DMO.
Now, having followed that cookie cutter plan diligently, I have created time every day for mySELF.
Yes, I have taken on a lot more this year than ever, but something switched inside me. I didn’t want to keep working on the computer till the wee hours of the morning anymore.
I had to tweak my life mind/body and spirit! As long as I follow this plan of mine, it is working out. And the best thing of all is that I’m taking on a new commitment with my spirituality. (long story)
Putting spirituality first these days has helped me so much to recognize what is important and what is not. So, I have to give credit where credit is due and that is I handed over my life to God.
All I did was say “What do you want me to do?” Everything else fell into place, and there is no stopping me now 🙂
Take some time out my friend, even a day with the family with no thoughts of your work. It will do you so much good.

Hi Donna,
I envy you!! 🙂
Jokes apart, you are simply living in heaven, with the beach nearby and the wonderful natural surroundings. More so, this was where your heart was right from the start, and I am glad David heard you there and you shifted, as that makes a lot of difference to your level of internal happiness and satisfaction too. When your surroundings and environment are how you would like them to be, it does make you happier, and I’ve noticed this kind of feeling when I am in such a place too.
But I would love to read the follow up post where you’ll tell us how you really take out the ‘me’ time from such a hectic schedule. Being bloggers, it is tough – ask me! More so, with a family to manage, my dog, and the other writing projects, it can get overwhelming! Unless you close things and take out time for yourself, you are just into the grind, day in and day out, like a never ending story. So, I look forward to that post, though I know I’d be taking a short break for a few weeks now for my summer vacation with my family – that will be a real break because I intend leaving ALL work behind this time (never tried it before, though I want to now!).
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂
Harleena Singh recently posted..The Aha!NOW Chat With Harsh Agrawal [Interview]
Hi Harleena,
I move like the wind! I always lived in places that suited my needs. When the energy shifted in one place, I found another.
So here I am, from living next to a giant waterfall in NY to the edge of the planet on the Atlantic coast. If it were 10 years ago, it would have been too quiet for me. But it suits my needs now because firstly, I love the peaceful energy and I’m still accessible to a city (that city gal in me needs) I’m only a little over an hour’s drive to Boston. So I can get my shot of city life if I want to.
I had trapped myself into a blogging frenzy in the past. But then came that product I made, and still making more as I speak. The importance of product creation and marketing has superseded just about everything.
So now, with more on my plate, I had to create a daily method of operation that was more strict than ever. In doing so, I found that this challenge I had given myself included time for Me!
Just sitting on the beach for a while clears my head and when I get back to work I’m like rolling thunder.
I wish you a wonderful time on your vacation. Enjoy your family and don’t think once about being plugged in. Just let people know you will be away and when you get back, tell us all about it. Especially the part of how you overcame your workload, and took time to fully focus on your family.
Have a great time!

Today, I went to plant flowers and felt guilty that I was not in front of my computer. Crazy right?

Hi Leslie
Planting is one of those things that bring you back to nature and grounds you. I love to get my bare hands into the soil, planting my garden too.
But think of this: Instead of having your mind on your work, if you were at one with your garden, putting your hands in the soil and thinking of nothing else but what you were doing, something incredible happens. You find peace in that action.
So, I would say the first thing to do to relieve your guilt is to focus totally on each and every task you do. Even washing dishes can get your mind off your work.
You will be surprised how refreshed and more focused you will be.
Wishing you well,

Believe it or not, I can tell you are more relaxed and more at peace since your move. It shows in your blog posts! I am so jealous of you living in a beautiful place and near the beach. That is my ultimate goal but must be a less crowded beach. Not going to happen in Delaware but I’m up for the move. Walking the beach with Titan and/or the hubs or both or just sitting and meditating like you do is sooooo peaceful. One can really find themselves doing that. So just know, I’m jealous and I would love if you would share more beach pics on Facebook. 😉
