Blogging vs Facebook Pages

This post was most recently updated on October 7th, 2014

Blogging vs. Facebook PagesPeople ask me if they’re better off building their online business by blogging or with Facebook Pages.

I usually tell them to use both.

In fact, the trick is to learn to get people to know you a little bit on your Facebook Page, and then have them follow you onto your blog.

I think of it like this.

When you have a Facebook Page, you try to get people interested in you as a person.

When they get on your page, they start learning what you like to do, how you think, and they starting hanging out with you.

You talk family, vacation, shoes… all the fun stuff that creates friends with people you like.

Whenever the chance arises, you remind them about your niche, your passion, your business… all that stuff.

The key to this “reminder” is your call to action.

That’s when you tell your Facebook Page friend to “click here” and find you on your blog.  That’s where you develop more of a business relationship.

So, here’s how I see it.

Let’s say my passion, my interests and even my little brick and mortar retail shop are all about dogs.  My special, special passion is about Blue Tick hounds… like my dog, Giuseppi 🙂

So I go to a party with tons of people everywhere and I wander around until I find people talking about dogs.

Cool.  I start chatting with them.  About dogs, kids, my favorite tv show… whatever.

Eventually I figure out who the hound owners are, and even those who have Blue Ticks.

Now, we talk more seriously about dogs, especially Blue Tick hounds.  We share pictures, stories, training tricks, etc.

So, it’s getting late. Gotta run.

I quickly grab the folks I’ve been talking with and say something like this…

“hey, it was great seeing you.  I’m going to give you my business card.  This is my doggie shop, and I know you love dogs like I do, so drop by and see my.  I’ll take special care of you, now that we’re friends.”

I think of the party being like Facebook.

Everybody’s there.

There little circles of dog lovers is like a Facebook Page.  That’s where I get to chat with people who share my passion for dogs.

My little doggie retail shop on the corner is like my blog.  That’s where we actually get more serious about dogs, and even do business together.

Maybe you want a cute collar, a great chewie or something else for your dog.  You’ll probably love buying it from me instead of going to the mall.

We’re friends now.  You trust me more and we even like each other.

Win-win!

So I tell folks that it’s important to have a Facebook Page.  That’s where you’ll start finding quality traffic for your blog.

When your Facebook friends find their way to your blog, they’re ready to do business!  That means read your posts and comment on them, opt in to your newsletter, and even buy your products and services.

So here’s the process.

Get traffic to your Facebook Page.

Build engagement with folks and drive this traffic to your blog.

“Do business” with people right on your Facebook Page.

Do business with them on your blog.

Some people prefer doing business with you on Facebook, others won’t get to that level until they get to learn more about you on your blog.

The overall process is simple, but of course, all the baby steps required to make it all work is where the strategy and implementation is.

Many of my blogging buddies and clients find it confusing and difficult.  They think they have to start spending lot of money on Facebook ads in order to get anywhere.

While Facebook ads are hot right now, there are many ways to start building your list and driving traffic to your blog for free using Facebook Pages.

You’ve just got to know how to do it.

I’ll be doing a webinar next week that will walk you through the process of using Facebook Pages to

  • drive traffic to your blog
  • build a list in the process
  • start getting folks to
    … buy your products
… sign up for your services, and
    … join your business

If you want to know how to use Facebook Pages in your online business, sign up for my “Facebook Pages Mastery” event today.

It’s not about getting huge numbers of fans, or blasting out paid ads.

It’s about attracting quality folks to your blog and your business, and converting them into subscribers and buyers.

I hope to see you there.

“Facebook Pages Mastery”

So tell me.

Are you using Facebook Pages as part of your business?

If not, what’s stopping you?

If you are, how is it working out for you?

Let me know in the comments below.

I always love hearing from my readers!

    Hi Leanne,

It sure is important to have both going on. Facebook Pages right now (right now being the key phrase because things are always changing lol) are increasing reach when we engage with them. Of course, we cannot put all business stuff there because it is all about social activity.

Ask a question, post something that is congruent with a blog post you have written…like a “tip of the day” and some little stuff about our “adventures” in life that brand us as people. 🙂

If your personal profile is getting a lot of interaction, that’s great! You can also give the a hint to visit your page.

And of course, there are the other social media strategies too! ((wink))

I agree that it’s not an either/or thing. It’s important to have both . . . essential, really. I’m finding that my Facebook group is working better for engagement than my page is right now (but as a result, I’m not focusing on interaction on my page as much . . . I need to do both). It’s also about a mix of things. Personal interaction (messaging with people) is good. My personal profile gets lots of interaction and then draws people to my page and my blog as well (and I rarely post about business stuff on my profile). And there’s always other social media and strategies, too.

What a great analogy, Donna! That answers some things for me, and gives me a clear visual of what each — FB page and blog — is for. One of my problems in reaching out through writing or any other way is that I don’t know who my audience is, or who I want to attract or speak to. This post helps me to pull things together and see what and who I need to see.

      Hi Willena,

I am so happy this helped. It is important to know your audience. I would say whatever you are writing about, search others to see their audience.

On Facebook even if you have no intention of placing an ad, there is a lot of research you can do. You can plug in People who like to read X, The age, the location, and so much more.

I use that myself as a way to see what people are interested in. Give it a try…it’s fun!

    Donna,

I have several facebook pages but none for my main blog. I need to make a facebook page for that blog and get rid of some of the other pages I have.

I have just not gotten around to putting up a page. I feel like I don’t really know what I am doing. I need to look up how to do it and learn about facebook pages. This is something that seems time consuming. At this point I don’t have lots of time so I have not gotten it done.

Your post has reminded me to get with it and get a facebook page up. Thanks.

      Hi Dee Ann,

Working with a Facebook Page requires time and also a marketing plan. If you are too busy with other things, I wouldn’t start doing it.

As with anything we do out here, we have to “pick our poison” so to speak. We have to evaluate our time, see where we need to focus on and then act upon it.

As of this writing, Facebook Pages and marketing is a hot platform. But..as we know, in the internet world, things do change quickly. So, if you don’t have the time, passion and plan, I would suggest you don’t drive yourself nuts! 🙂

      Have a wonderful week,

    Hey Donna,
Interesting and useful pointers regarding Facebook. I really haven’t done anything with Facebook except with my friends and relatives for social communication. Because of my social work license I have to keep my social and professional worlds separate, unfortunately. That’s why I like Google+, I can make friends but it can be in a professional context. I have a business Facebook page but, it seems to me, I don’t have the freedom to meet new people that you have on Google+.

    Love you blog!

      Hi Kathleen,

I can see you have a valid point. In your line of work, the last thing you need is to be on Facebook. I have some friends that are in the same business and it is a good thing not to be there.

Google+ is awesome and you can still meet new people by going to communities.

Yes, that is one thing not to do is to buy fake links. Many have done that in the past, but I’m sure by now Facebook is catching on. We have our blogs and then Social Media. As Facebook changes all the time, it is becoming more of a paid site for people.

But, for the marketer it is working great!

    Hi Heather,

Fan numbers depend on what you are selling. If one has loads of stuff, the higher numbers will be ok.

In my case for example, I’m a product creator, so I only want those that are interested in the specific products created. I don’t do any other marketing than that.

Also, with Facebook’s reach, I rather have a smaller number of people on my Fan Page that I can engage with.

Thanks for sharing your views, it is greatly appreciated.

I agree that Facebook pages are vital to blogging. They help you with content, but I disagree with the comment about fan numbers. You want quality readers that will consistently give you new content, but you also will need higher numbers if you want to sample and review high-quality products from some companies. 🙂 It really depends on what your blogging goals are on what you need from your Facebook page.

Interesting topic and love the way you used the doggie retail shop as an example to explain.
I think you got it absolutely right. The key here is to create engagement and build relationship first. Sell later, hence the attraction marketing. How do you see Google+ and Facebook in terms of engagement flexibility?

      Hi Justin,

I am both on Facebook and Google+ but when it comes to engagement rates, my friends and followers are more on Facebook than Google+ so that’s where I hang out most of the time.

Google+ is awesome, and actually more businesslike. But with Facebook, I have also been doing a bit of marketing strategies that have had a good ROI return.

So right now, while marketers are going crazy, I will be focusing more time on Facebook, until the party ends.

      Hi Atish,

Socializing is getting people to know you, and you knowing them. As long as we are honest, and share good quality, with a few little questions and calls to action, a Facebook Page
can be a great asset for business.

It is quite different than Facebook itself, because with a plan in mind, it can lead to business and/or to people coming to your blog.

Well said Donna. Since we’re FB friends I see your activity and it seems pretty clear you not do “do” FB well but enjoy it. I do believe there’s an audience for my niche on FB but I regularly struggle with it – not because I’m confused about what to do – because I’m not a chatty kind of person. I’ve learned a lot from your example and have improved but I still lean toward Google+ because the conversation there tends to be more business / get to the point than Facebook. Still, I’m going to keep working on finding my Facebook voice. Thanks for the great advice!

      Hi Marquita,

I’m sure you will have no problem finding your Facebook Voice because you are such an inspiration to so many people.

Sometimes, Facebook can be annoying with drama and who ate what for dinner, but I just scroll down and see what good positive stuff people are sharing.

When it comes to my FB Page, it is more business-like and does attract business. By following a certain methodology it’s working. But more than that, engagement is always the key factor.

Being there for others comes right back with that good old Law of Attraction.

Last time, I was 100% on blogs. And that, was probably a huge mistake! Facebook Pages are important. You don’t have one, start right now (and it’s free)!

I consider Facebook Pages as a mini blog (micro blog). Good place to chip in some info and get some traffic from it.

Yes FB pages are like a micro blog, but we always must keep in mind it is rented space, so capturing names and emails are the main focus!

To be honest with you, I never figure out the real purpose of a facebook page up until I read this post! You know how the bells start to ring when you get that Aha moment!

I knew about target marketing and building relationships but I never put the two together. It all makes sense now, and I’ve said this a million times, but I’m going to start using my facebook page more. It’s all set up from last year, I just have to do some minor tweaking. Once I get it going, then it’s all gravy from there!

      Hi Sherman,

So happy that those bells and whistles went off! There is so much negative talk about Facebook these days, because of people who like to do things the free way.

With some knowledge, and even a few bucks….like $5 to boost a post or an offer, Facebook can be a “marketer’s dream.”

How long this will last? I don’t know. But what I do know is since I have been applying a certain methodology, my opt-in rates have gone up via my Facebook Page.

As for numbers: I did a little experiment and targeted those who were interested in blogging. “Like if you like blogging” to like my page. There came many newbies right to my blog.

That’s only one example…but there is so much more. So get that page going my friend!

    Hi Donna,

Some great ideas. Use FB to weed out the non-participants and let those who really want to know about you that they can find you here. It’s like using FB as the reception desk before getting into the main event through the open doors. That also leaves you to have the premium event behind closed doors but anyone who gets that far will definitely be interested.

Brilliant m’lady. I’ll be back for more advice another day. Thank you.

The party analogy and atmosphere approach you advocate for here, is especially
    appealing to me.

Because it really seems to mirror real life! And you can see the natural progression of things, instead of the all out frontal direct sales approach.

Clearly nobody just wants to be sold or pitched directly, while they’re on a social media site.

    Hi Donna,

What a great question and topic for a blog post!

Facebook has become so very popular, yet, like You, I usually think it’s best to go with both. 🙂

I couldn’t agree with you more when you said if you have a Facebook page, you try to get people interested in you as a person. The connection can be stronger on a social site initially than it is on a blog, so I’m trying to improve my social engagement skills. LOL

Thank you for summarizing and listing the process with separate lines… That really helps me.

Yes I do have a Facebook page and have over 1000 likes, and have gotten to know a bunch of great people. However, my reach is up and down each week, and I’d like to increase it and keep it steady.

Harleena mentioned Google Plus, and that’s an area that I really haven’t done much with yet. I have acquaintances, friends, family, and a few groups I belong to, however, I don’t have specific circles with people in the same niche or anything.

I registered for your webinar, and I’m looking forward to it. 🙂

    Have a beautiful evening.

      Hi Carol,

Glad you found this helpful. Using special techniques on our Facebook Page to encourage engagement gives us a great reach.

More than that, as we build relationships, we have to encourage those that are on it to like and comment.

After a while, there’s a few tricks of how to introduce your products/services so they can press the app and away they go. BOOM…

We can also refer them to our blog.

    Hi Donna,

Great Post as always with lots of value to take away.

I totally agree with you on all what you explained. I do have some engagements on my fanpage but I have difficulty converting them to customers or business partners. This discouraged me somehow from continuing to update my fanpage but after reading this post, I am kind of fired to start again by improving the insights and engagement level on my page.

Thanks Donna for sharing this wonderful post!! It makes lots of sense. Have a great week ahead.

    Hi Donna –
I agree, you need both platforms. I cringe when people want to use their Facebook or other social media profile page in place of their own blog.
Who knows what the future holds for those social platforms, at least a blog is your own.
I do like your doggie example above – use fb as a place to woo potential readers/customers and then invite them over for tea.

    Hi Donna
Very impressive post on quite a unique topic. We usually manage our Facebook page simply to promot our blog post and leave it as deserted place after doing that.
Just like we regularly manage our blog with lot of tweaking on it we need to do same thing at our FB page.
This is a brilliant idea to drive traffic from FB page to blog and do not sit there. We must take the second step to convert our blog visitors to our subscribers. Otherwise we need to keep focusing more on our FB page to keep bringing visitors again and again.
The strategy you defined here to fully exploit both of them without ignoring any at the cost of other is really awesome.
Thanks for sharing another wonderful post with lot of value in it.

The trick is to post a smaller blurb ahead of time that hints to what you’re going to blog about. If people are interested and start feedback there… that’s a huge clue that they might be interested in hearing more.

As much as I’m on Facebook, there are very few people that I will read their long posts that should be blog articles because it makes me think they could be taking it back to their website to maximize engagement…. often I private message them and let them know how much more they can benefit with a “gentle teasing” method to get their friends and fans eager to visit.

And yes, I do agree those long posts should be blog articles! I have always wondered why they don’t take it back to their website to maximize engagement also.

I heard through the grapevine that this method was supposed to get more reach, but it doesn’t. I don’t know who started this, but it will benefit them if they did a “gentle teasing” method.

    Hey Donna,

My engagement on my Facebook page has drastically declined. Of course I haven’t been on Facebook a lot lately myself and we both know that you have to keep up those interactions or else.

I have just had way too much going lately but ever since Facebook changed their algorithms my posts aren’t being seen very much. I’ve not spent any money on boosting them either and I don’t intend to until I have more of a reason to do so like the launch of my product. I think once I get closer to that I’ll want them to sign up for that instead of just my list. Yep, there is a method behind my madness too!

Glad you’re enjoying your Facebook page and let’s hope Facebook doesn’t change things up again so soon. As you know that’s really the thing I hate about building up a big following on a social site. But you’re right about the people who like Facebook are going to hang out there more than any place else. You have to give them a reason to eventually stop by your place and hopefully once you’ve made some great connections they’ll be eager to.

Congrats on a new product, you are busting out of the seams now girl. I’m so thrilled for you.

Once you complete your project, the marketing begins. Right Now, Facebook is hot. Will that last? I don’t think so because the things are always changing. We have to be on the edge when marketing.

So far, it has been a good thing using my Facebook Page for conversion rates to my product and also my blog. I’m seeing new faces! Making more connections with a target population.

Yes, Facebook is not what it used to be, but marketing at this time is a blast!

Thank you Adrienne, yes we are busting out of the seams these days. Once the first product is done, and all is in place, we keep producing.

It’s what we worked on for a year prior to the first product and had goals written down. We are keeping up with them and business has taken a nice turn.

    Hi Donna,

For every individual importance of a Facebook page or a blog is different but in actual sense people who have the potential to make engagement with people at Facebook page and then drive them to the blog is extraordinary.

Both the platforms are essential to use.

At the Facebook page people can connect with many other people as compared to blog. We are all aware that most of people use Facebook and people who don’t even engage in blogging use Facebook. There are chances that we bloggers can connect with different kind of people at Facebook which can be beneficial for their blog too.

You have mentioned the pointed amazingly.

    Hi Donna,

As soon as I saw your title it reminded me of one of my prospective clients who wants me to design website for him since last year and half. He comes back new idea, we chat about it, I give him a game plan, he promises to do a couple of more things and then, a few weeks later it comes with a new plan. The cycle repeats.

I know that most probably you will never have a website. But, somehow I do not find him irritating and so, I entertaining for a few minutes every time he comes to me.

Once, he asked me a question, “Can you tell me why do I need to have a website and not a Facebook page?”

My answer was, “When I read your question, I had a feeling that you are asking me whether you should build your own house or live in a foster home. Foster home is free, it gives you a feeling of having a home. But my friend, you can be asked to leave anytime. That’s the difference between having your own website versus Facebook.”

I am not hundred percent sure about my schedule for this week since I just came back from a convention, I am keeping this in mind and I might just show up for your wedding because I would definitely like to see if I can learn a few techniques that you have been using to get success.
thank you for sharing about this and have a great new week.

      Hi Kumar,

I always encourage people to have their own blog, especially one that is hosted by YOU lol.

It is our own real estate. Now being on a social media platform like Facebook can work in conjunction with our blogs. To be able to target a specific audience and then tell them to visit our blog works!

Now, if they don’t want to we still have the option of that Facebook Page to engage with them and tell them about our product/services. Some people are just all about Facebook and need a helping hand to the blogosphere.

There is a bit of a learning curve of how to do it effectively, that’s why David and I put together this webinar. It will be recorded just in case you want it.

    Hi Donna,

Darn, I’ve seen that post on Facebook yesterday afternoon and wanted to be the first here, but then I’ve got distracted and forgot. Also because it was Sunday 🙂

But anyway, here I am now.

I still find it interesting that people ask about any other social media page/site versus their own blog. They still don’t get it, it seems.

The way you’ve explained it with the doggy shop is perfect. I hope your readers, at least will get it now. Facebook pages, Squidoo Pages, Hubpages Pages aren’t reall YOUR pages, it’s theirs. When you have a blog you OWN it, and you can do whatever you want with it, and most of all it won’t disappear on you like those pages can, and have.

Can anyone attend you webinar? If I can I might depending on the time 🙂

      Hi Sylviane,

Glad you “got it” with the analogy I’ve given. Yes, our blog is our own real estate and when we have a Facebook Page, we can send them to our blogs. My little secret is to invest $5 to “boost my post” each time I share a blog post. It is cost efficient and sends new people to my blog, even if they don’t comment.

They sometimes PM me which I encourage. This is how I’m meeting a target audience of people that are interested in the products I offer.

So where do these people come from? I target them on Facebook. So they are not there for amusement, but rather interest.

Of course anyone can attend the webinar lol!

    Hi Donna,

Even though I DON’T have a Facebook page, I really do have to agree with you on this strategy. It does makes sense and I have no doubt that it builds amazing engagement with people. I don’t do that with Facebook but I do it with Google+.

Fact of the matter is, with the people that you connect with on Facebook (or any social platform), they don’t want to be pitched to constantly like some people actually do. They want to just be friendly and have a conversation and get to know you. By doing that for a while and finding out what their interests are, it’ll be much easier to get them to engage on your site after a while.

Very interesting piece here, Donna. It really opened up my mind to something new that I didn’t consider doing.

Great post here. Hope you have a great day and a great rest of the week.

Thanks for your input! I also use Google+ but the marketing strategy right now on Facebook is pretty darn hot! I’ve done my paid ads and they worked well.

But here, talking about generating a Facebook Page with a little know how can increase not only visitors, but also engagement. When knowing how to use some strategies on a Facebook Page, you can lead folks to your blog and/or your app where your product/services are.

It is like a mini blog, You post several times a day but have to be more social than a blog post. You invite conversations using different strategies and engage on other people’s Pages.

A few times a week, you can remind your friends there to go to the app and give a look at your offer. I’ve gained a lot in just a few months.

It is a learning curve, but when done correctly, it is a great way to market.

    Hi Donna,

I totally agree with you here.

Build bonds on pages, keep your information light, and refer people to your blog from there. I also love the analogy of the party. Most get Facebook all wrong. They’re like someone at a party who tries to convince people to not only go to their store, but to become customers.

This desperate approach repels most folks, and the calm, confident approach you use is attraction marketing at its finest. The trick is to be as transparent as possible to build trust, establish rapport, to make friends, and then you can invite people to your blog, to continue the relationship-building process.

Work that Page persistently. Staying on topic, offering value, and keeping things light, and personal, seems to work pretty darn well to build bonds.

      Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your input! Unfortunately lots of people use their Facebook Page as a desperate attempt to attract customers. Each and every post is “buy me” and that, to me is the biggest mistake one can make with Facebook Marketing.

If we treat our Facebook Page like we treat our blogs, kicking out some good content, asking a question, and inviting people to join the conversation, we get to know each other. Then, once a week or so, remind them of that app with the product on it.

It is also great to invite people to our blogs, which I’ve seen happening. Relationships can be built so many ways, Using these two tools in today’s marketplace is sure a win win for me.

I wanted to share the information with my readers.

And thank you…Our next webinar will be all about this topic in detail, to show results.

I agree with all you have said and I must confess i am a bit hit an miss on my page as I play on my profile more but I am becoming more organized with it.

Another thing I think is our blog is our own real estate. Facebook is not. Sure Facebook is the hottest thing now but who knows what the trend will be in the future. Google ads were bit once and then trends changed.

But as a marketer, things change fast and that is what makes it so interested for me. It is important to own our own real estate – our blog. But when we use our Facebook Page with a marketing perspective, the two work great.

Right now, doing this has boosted my business and that’s why I just wanted to share it! Who knows where the next place will be? I’m betting it is on Google+….but for now, Facebook is a marketers dream only when one knows how to do it.

That is really the only thing stopping me from wanting to put so much effort into a Facebook page.

There is always a business plan to follow using our blogs and Facebook Pages. Yes we do share some things we do along the way, but we must keep in mind we are owners of a business and using these two specific platforms can be great.

I know what you mean about trying to have a normal chat on Facebook and then a marketer sticks something in your face. That’s black hat marketing. Instead….I do offer my product on my Facebook page and do remind people that it does exist. If they want to opt in fine, if not, that’s fine with me too.

Although Facebook has changed and so has it’s reach, there is always a way to get around that. Honoring your “fans” and people who follow you. Give them the “juice” FIRST. Go to their pages and if it is interesting leave a like and comment. Eventually the favor will be returned.

If not, you soon find out you are dealing with a “buy me” person, one that you will have no use for anyway.

Glad to meet you here and I’ve gone over to your blog and replied.

    Hi Donna,

You are SO right in all that you said 🙂

Yes, you do need both, your blog and Facebook page to make it work for you. If you have a business and something to sell, you need to follow exactly what all you mentioned, and people usually see you first, through your profile page and then like your fanpage for all that you share. It then drives them to your blog too. Even though I don’t have anything to sell, I get people this way to my blog, just because of what I share, while a few others leave me messages there regarding work too.

More over, this process works well even on G+ as it brings people from your profile to your blog and I am sure a lot of business deals can be cracked this way as well. I know you are so good with all that you share on your FB page – I still got to learn to be more present there, which due to lack of time is limited to sharing a week bit presently, but I am glad for the 3000+ fans who are already there 🙂

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

      Hi Harleena,

Thanks for your great input on this topic. People find me all the time via Facebook and G+ and find their way to my blog, even on Twitter 🙂

When I got serious about my Facebook Fanpage, put up an app to sell my product, I hit new levels of production.

There are many that don’t come to my blog….they may read it but not comment. I started working my Facebook Page with a business plan. Although I don’t have thousands of followers, the ones I do have, are awesome and we are doing lots of engagement.

There is a whole method to my madness, that’s why I had created my latest product about it above. 🙂

      Have a great week!

    Hi Donna,

Great post here. Ever tried Facebook groups for your VIP readers? In the past, we’ve used it to connect with our most engaged audience. This might actually be a more valuable tip now that organic reach is declining. Thoughts?

      Hi Danny,

I’ve found that my customers like finding me on Skype best of all. I set up a Facebook Group, but don’t monitor it much because my clients aren’t using it.

That might be because they are looking for my immediate response which is part of my service I offer them.

I got the idea from Jason Fladlien. He re-directs all his buyers to his Skype Group. I think he may be on to something.

However, I love Facebook and will be re-directing my clients there as soon as they are comfortable.

      Thanks for the tip!
