15 Reasons Why Blogging Sucks

Yes, my loyal readers I am here to tell you that blogging sucks!

Let me show you why.

1. It takes so much time to write a blog post… doesn’t that suck?

2. After you’re done writing, you have to purchase or otherwise find a cool image that reflects the blog content. There are tons of image vendors… choose carefully.

3. You better read the terms and conditions of any images you snag, or even purchase. Otherwise you can be in big trouble. Read the fine print, and bear in mind that the rules you signed on for change all the time.

4. Here’s the safer alternative: create your own image. But that’s not necessarily simple, either. Use Canva, Paint, Photoshop or some other software? I use Canva (not an affiliate link). It’s pretty good, although sometimes my pictures look like a five year old made it.

5. OMG… now people are actually coming to read your blog, and some of them leave comments.

6. Now, you have to reply to that comment.

7. Don’t forget to reciprocate. You have to return the favor by going to their blog, reading an article and commenting on it.

8. Not done. Now you have to share their blog post on your social media sites. More time. I told you this sucks.

9. In addition to all of this, you have to work on building an email list of your followers. You need to get people to opt in…what? This really sucks.

10. So, get down to the business of creating something of value, like an e-book, in order to entice folks to opt in to your email list. Just what you wanted to hear, right? Another time-draining “to do.”

11. Now people start opting in to your offer. Yeah! They’re on your email list. Uh-oh. Now you have to spend time writing emails… several times a week without fail! Oh, yea… Every week.

12. Emails are critical to jump starting the engagement process. Writing Good emails is the lifeblood of your business, but… it’s no snappy little process. %agh&*#yick%!! This is really gonna Suck!

13. You have to keep up-to-date with the latest and greatest products to offer and trainings to share with both your email subscribers, and your blog visitors.

14. As your blog starts growing, you find yourself replying to an increasing number of comments, reciprocating by reading 5, 10 maybe even more blogs every single day, and leaving your own comments on them. Where do you find all the time for this?

15. Besides, what is the point, anyway? Blogging really sucks when you have to spend so much time doing so many things that are not even making you much money, and certainly not very quickly.

Now, these are only 15 ways that blogging sucks.

There are plenty more.

Do you agree?

If so, the joke is on you … he he he

This may be a little off base from what I usually write, but the real point I’m making here is this:

Blogging is a lot of work, and it may take a lot of your time, and you might get discouraged at times and think “this sucks”…

but when you learn how to blog the right way, it’s worth every single bit of the effort.

Learn To Blog “The Right Way”

As a successful and dedicated blogger, you already know that.

Everything you see, hear and look at makes you want to write about it.

You constantly think of neat blog titles, and hopefully even jot them down for later use.

You are eager and passionate in your quest to help others. This is really why you blog.

Inexperienced or struggling bloggers, on the other hand, may not understand yet.  They may just see blogging as too much effort for too little return.

I know it takes time to write good content on your blog.

But it’s really just sharing things that you know, or that you may have just learned.

There a variety of ways to do that.

You might put together a curated blog post.

Or, you could do an interview with another blogger or authority in your niche.

Make blogging interesting and fun, not drudgery to just slog through.

A good blogger loves to hear from her readers.  She answers each and every comment fully, and with enthusiasm and interest.

It is all about engagement.  This is where it happens.

If a person reads your blog post and leaves a good comment, you are excited to reply to them. Then in turn you do the appropriate thing. You go to their blog, leave the best comment you can. Then share it on social media sites.

Did you know how many people will read your comment and come over to your blog just because something in your comment resonated with them? It’s true.

This is where your blog can start to go viral, so don’t think you’re wasting time with these “chores.”

Now Here Is The Part That Bloggers Love Most!

This is the part where the time you put into blogging starts translating into profits.

Does that sound like blogging sucks? Not to me.

Learn To Blog “The Right Way”

While there are many ways to make money with your blog, one of the most direct methods is to simply offer your readers good products and services to buy!

You can do this with side bar banners, or links within your posts. Either way, just make sure to brand yourself in the process…that’s right!

You don’t want people to just buy a product, you want them to start to value you as someone who can help them solve their problems and make their lives better.

You want them to get to know you, and trust you.  That’s when they’ll become interested in buying things you offer, and want to follow you even after they’ve purchased.

It’s easy enough to brand yourself if you’re offering your own product or service.

But even if the product is not created by you, do a short video or blog post “review” introducing it to your readers.  Make it clear that it is YOU who is suggesting they buy the “problem solving product” because YOU want to help them solve their problem.

This is how to build a following of readers, prospects and customers who will come back to you time and time again, for information, value and to make additional purchases.

Probably the best way to keep in touch with your buyers, so you can continue building your business by offering additional products and services is with your email follow ups.

Sure, writing emails is time consuming.

Figuring out what to offer and how to do it… this is a whole other specialized task that you’ll need to learn to do, and you’ll need to spend time working on.

And it’s not a one-time thing.

As long as you have a list of prospects and customers, you’ll need to come up with new and fresh ways to give them value and make them offers.

Bloggers Need To Keep Learning

“What? Learning… Grrrr my company told me everything I need to know, Donna!” Err…Not!

The internet is a place that changes very, very quickly. What worked yesterday may be just old-hat today.

If you are not up to date with what’s happening online in your niche, and spending time acquiring the latest marketing skills, you are going to sink very fast.

Does this suck to you?

Not to successful bloggers.  They know this is an essential part of blogging.

They make it their business to keep up on all the latest niche information that pertains to their blog, as well as the hottest marketing strategies that other bloggers are using.

It doesn’t suck to me because (1) it challenges me, and (2) I love it!

Learn To Blog “The Right Way”

Those are pretty key attitudes to have if you are going be a successful blogger.

Yes, my friends, blogging sucks…

  • IF you think you are going to start a blog, push a button and make money fast
  • IF you don’t have an altruistic mindset, meaning: you don’t care about anyone but YOU!
  • IF you don’t want to put in the necessary time
  • IF you don’t love the challenge of keeping up with the fast pace of the internet
  • IF you don’t love to learn new things, all the time
  • IF you don’t love connecting and engaging with people
  • IF you are not committed to always finding new ways to improve the lives of your readers, subscribers, customers and clients

Your Blog Is A Sales Funnel

So my dear friends, what say you?

Does blogging suck? or is it just about the greatest business in the world?

    Hi Donna ,
I thought you make a joke,I know you love blogging even if it sucks.
For me, it does really, most of the time. I think it takes me a lot of time,
    but I like it.
This may get better over time. Like you say it is rewarding as well.
Having nice comments and connecting with others is a good reason.
And it can be done from home and we are connected with people from
all over the world. It is amazing. I like to learn as well, not only about IM,
It sucks sometimes and I did even not start to write emails yet.
If I get better in writing, it may get easier.
Good, you listed all this very nice what is still waiting for me 🙂
    I take the challenge 🙂
    Thank you
    Erika

      Hi Erika,

I think I have teased just about everyone with this title lol. The best part of blogging for me is connecting with people all over the world. How could we ever do this without the technology we have now?

It is a rewarding experience. Girl, you do have to start writing those emails….Sometimes when the mood strikes, just write a bunch of them and then you can send them out later via get response or whatever you use.

You ARE a writer, so let your fingers fly across that keyboard!

Hey Donna, I can tell you had some fun with this one. 🙂 I guess anything sucks if you don’t see the big picture of why you are doing it. I caught myself this morning, thinking I need to do this — but I have to do my stupid ________ first. Sometimes everything feels like a chore, including those things that are going to move me forward most quickly.

Wow Donna! I’m 101st commenter! Hopefully you still find it valuable!

The first thing that drew my attention to this post is, of course, the title! I couldn’t believe an expert blogger like you would be negative… but you seemed to be for the first 15 points. So, naturally, I had to read further to get to what your point was for writing this post! I was intrigued!

Then I saw your point… and you made more than one excellent point about blogging and how to do it right with the right attitude and perspective. It’s really quite humorous! Some new bloggers (or people that shouldn’t be blogging at all) do tend to look at blogging like you stated in the first half of your post. They read something somewhere that told them blogging was an easy way to get rich quickly with little effort. Thank you for the “meat and potatoes” of your post where you explain what it’s really all about and the proper perspective one should have if they want to be a blogger that’s successful online.

Kudos to you and your products you’ve created! Keep ’em coming! 😀

      Hi Deborah,

Got ya with that title! Most people were scratching their heads thinking I had gone nuts. But I see you got the point.

Yes, that first half was about those who have been told that blogging is a cash machine. We know darn well it is not.

Because of many newbies coming into my business, I do get quite a few that have been told this. When I do explain to the the “real deal” of blogging, they either will take up the challenge or run away, going back to the day job.

I wanted to make this clear so that people will understand what it takes. Ergo..those “meat and potatoes”

      Happy to see you here!

    Hi Donna,

You know, to some newbie bloggers, blogging probably does suck. I mean, there so much to do and to learn and it can honestly be very frustrating to many. But it’s really all about persistence and the strong minded that makes it.

When I started last year, I thought blogging sucked majorly. All I wanted to do was sell my products and that’s it. I wanted no part of blogging because I knew that’s not what I wanted to do. But then that changed and I got into blogging and guess what? It sucked.

Because I wasn’t succeeding as I thought I should be. But I didn’t quit. I continued on. And now, I’m in a better place than I was 6 months ago. And hopefully, I continue advancing.

Writing emails is very time consuming, but I’m dedicating myself to revamp my entire autoresponder series over the time off I’m taking in 3 weeks. To many, it would seem as though that sucks, but I know what I want for my business. And it’s something that needs to be done.

Last thing I want to say is that you’re absolutely right about bloggers needing to continue learning. I love to learn because I obviously don’t know everything. Learning from others is the best way to not only improve, but get ahead.

    Awesome post here, Donna.

    Have a great day.

      Hi Andrew,

Thank you so much for sharing and adding value to this post. Sounds like you were impatient at the beginning as so many people are. Put up a blog and lets make money! But as you mentioned, you learned the ropes and know now that blogging takes time.

Your blog has grown in leaps and bounds and you always share great value in your content.

So now, when you go out to the marketplace and pick a target audience, they will look you up, see who you are, and go to your blog. What they will find out is that you provide very good information and you know what your talking about. This gives you the credibility you need!

Dedicating yourself to write a whole new auto responder is an excellent idea! This is where we really need to engage with those that have opted into our offer. As long as our sales funnel is in place, things start happening!

      Wishing you all the best,

I love blogging and yes, it is very lucrative! Once we blog the “right” way, giving great content and answering comments. Also going to other people’s blogs and reading, commenting and sharing.

Yep…takes a lot of work and time, but what other business doesn’t?

    Great post, Donna.

Blogging certainly is a major commitment for those of us who position in up front and center in our online business.

As you point out, though, there are incredible benefits for anyone who understands the deeper strategy that lies behind blogging. It’s definitely not just about creating content, although that’s an activity that does take a lot of time and effort.

It’s more about the spin-off strategies, primarily that of building relationships with people in our niche.

      Hey David,

Blogging is a huge part of our online business. There is a deeper strategy if one blogs wisely. It is a creative process of engagement and marketing.

Now you know me well and you know how I love to engage with people. Gosh you can’t even take me out to a party because I talk to just about everyone he he he.

But seriously, blogging is a business…and that said it is a major commitment.

    Hey Donna,

This definitely caught me off guard when I saw your headline LOL!

Blogging Sucks! I know Donna isn’t saying that huh?!?! LOL!

Bloggers surely have a ton going on. You’re right, 15 is a very small list compared to all that bloggers have to do an on a regular basis.

It really is interesting to me to visit blogs that were so popular but after being abandoned for only a couple months, things go way down hill.

I like that you went into this because part of being a serious blogger is being willing to do all the work. and continue to get better and better at it all.

I enjoyed this post Donna! Have a great weekend!

But I do wanted to give only 15 reasons that Blogging Sucks out there for those who are either new, or are on the fence of leaving the blogging world.

I wanted to grab the attention of other bloggers that are not monetizing their blogs too! It involves lots of work, but if we work smartly, we can succeed!

    Hi Donna

That post really built up well to get your true point across. I enjoyed reading it because it reminded me of my learning process.

Just as I thought I’d got one step cracked I realized that it led onto another one “they” hadn’t warned me about.

One reason blogging sucks for me is, like Tim, I find it so addictive! I mean for goodness sake, it’s nearly 3am here in the UK and I’m still commenting etc. Hey, I cold be slumped asleep in front of the TV 🙂

Yes, it’s addictive, but that’s because I enjoy it so much and take pleasure from seeing the progress I’m making compared to when I started out.

Certainly, I’ve made mistakes – Adrienne calls them “learning experiences” which I much prefer – but I love overcoming each challenge, even knowing there’ll be another one round the corner.

So I won’t be trying to quit my addiction just yet.

Thanks for a great post and enjoy your weekend.

      Hi Joy,

It sure is a good reminder of our learning process when we started because no one tells you all the things you need to do to have a successful blog.

I do work with many newbies that are starting out and have some crazy idea someone told them that you put a blog up and you make money. Grrrrrr

When I lay out the “real deal” they either decide to do it or not. But I find it of the utmost importance to tell new people coming in to the blogging world what to expect.

Yes, it is an addiction of sorts, I am addicted and loving it too!

    Hey Donna,

You know what Donna? When it comes to blogging, it really sucks! It really takes a lot of your time! But… that is time well worth spent! That’s the best part about blogging.

For me it’s a hobby (even though I’m not suppose to think of it as such 😉 ) but I’m a serious person when it comes to blogging, generating traffic, leads, commenting, etc… you know what i mean! That’s what i really like, and also it’s helping me balance my introversion with my extroversion. I can get be hyped up and calm at the same time with no problem now 😉

But yes, I do all of the steps that you mentioned here! Yes it can be tedious if you’re mindset is geared towards that, or you can have the mindset of wanting to do this everyday because it’s fun to you. Either or, you choose, but it’s also going to show in the words you convey on your blog post. So I’d rather look at the fun, and exciting side of blogging versus the other way around!

Thanks for sharing Donna! Have a great weekend!

Blogging to me is fun also. I just love putting something together and having people engage on my blog. It is fun to make new friends…and those that have been with me for a while…Like YOU!

Engagement is what I love the most after I have created the content of the post. And yes, It can be tedious, if one doesn’t enjoy it.

Sometimes just coming up with an idea for a post can make you just stare like a deer in the headlights at your computer screen.

This is why I like to urge people to have a spare post in their back office already done for those “just in case” moments.

I love sarcasm when its funny and kind. Donna, you made me laugh out loud in this post !!

It’s funny how playing a bit with reverse psychology can get people to drop their defenses and explore their own perceptions and inner thoughts.

Blogging does indeed suck if you believe getting online with your pretty website is instantaneously going to bring you royals and riches.

I wonder how often people think about how relationships are formed offline. As adults, how do we make new friends? Network for new business? We don’t just stand on a street corner with a sign saying “I’m a fun person, will you be my friend!”

We instead meet people and it’s casual at first, and then we have tea and share some stories and it develops from there. Eventually we end up supporting each other and having fun together. Blogging is the online version of the same process. We build connection and engagement and community by truly getting our hand dirty and being fully present!

    Thanks for this post Donna!

      Hi Deborah,

Good to know you were laughing out loud with this post! I wanted to give people a good chuckle.

You are on point and really got the message because I wanted people to explore their own perceptions and inner thoughts with this message.

Yes, blogging sucks if one thinks it is all about a get rich quick idea. While training many new people, they have somehow thought this would be the end all of their dreams without making relationships.

You know me well enough that I tell it like it is. So when someone calls and wants some coaching this is kind of a layout I give them BEFORE they make a decision to coach with me.

It amazes me the responses I get “Don’t you want to sell me on this Donna?” he he he Of course I do if they are a right fit for the blogging world. If not, why even start? I don’t like convincing people to do anything. Rather, work with those who know what they are in for 🙂

So true, making relationships takes time and one has to want to do it. I can just picture myself carrying that sign “I’m a fun person, will you be my friend?” You made me laugh out loud with that one!

Blogging is not for the faint of heart, the get rich quick mentality, nor the person who wants to dabble in it once in a while.

It is based on giving, connecting with others, and creating that community on our blogs and in conjunction with social media. And…marketing strategies which is an ongoing learning curve that has to be enjoyed.

      Thanks for your awesome input,

    Hi Donna

It is very correct blogging sucks. It almost makes the life of a blogger hell. A person fully involved in his blog can do nothing except just doing blogging, thinking about it and planning for it.

But for those who take it as a business it never sucks. If one do blogging as just any other business is done he will just enjoy it and will be happy to achieve his goals in set period of time.

In every business we create and sell. For that we either buy or manufacture ourselves and then take the support of marketing to sell our product. But in any kind of business we need to invest a huge amount of money to achieve our goals.

The biggest advantage in blogging is lesser investment and higher results. Till the time Google bots don’t charge money for visiting our blog and noticing our well-done SEO contents we don’t have to invest much for higher returns. This is the biggest feature of blogging.

So the conclusion of your post is blogging sucks for those who don’t have its proper concept and perfect strategy to do it. Those who just dive into it to become a millionaire in short period of time deserve to face the whipping of blogging failure.

Thanks a lot for sharing this interesting post.

      Hi Mi Muba,

      I always appreciate your insights.

It’s so true, as you say, that blogging is a lot of work that is well worth it when you understand the bigger strategy behind it.

I often have clients ask me “how do I make money blogging” and they are really surprised by the map I lay out for them.

They think they just have to put a bunch of ads on their blogs and that’s the only way to make it a business. You and I know… that is definitely NOT the way to turn your blog into a profitable business.

Thanks so much for visiting, Mi Muba.

    Hi Donna,

Well this must be the best post on blogging I’ve read in a long while! I absolutely agree with everything you’ve said here and can totally identify with it all – both with the negative feelings that could crop up if we don’t approach it with the correct mindset and with the buzz and satisfaction that we can feel too if we do it the right way.

I especially identified with the bit about jotting down ideas for blog titles – this is something that I do all the time, along with jotting down notes for the content too. I use the built-in Windows Sticky Notes to do this and I was looking at it only today in fact. I was surprised to see just how much I have written in there! I’m adding to it all the time so I don’t think I’ll be short of ideas for a while, plus I often get an idea on the spur of the moment and just decide to base a blog post around it. I’m glad I have a good cache of things to draw from though if necessary.

Thanks for this enjoyable post. I hope you’re keeping well and I look forward to reading your next great post! 🙂

      Hi Glenn,

Glad you enjoyed this post! I do think most can identify with those feelings of blogging. I wanted to lay it out that way so people can take a good look inside themselves. 🙂

We do have to approach blogging with the correct mindset. That’s where it all starts…in our minds. And I’m a firm believer of that. Once we do things the right way and have that fire burning within us to keep on going we then become good passionate bloggers that create content to help others.

      I know you do!

Thanks for sharing how you jot down ideas. Once we are bloggers and/or marketers, we do see the world with that mindset and are never at a loss of ideas. The problem is if we don’t jot it down somewhere, we loose them.

    Hey Donna,

I agree, this one is a little different for you but point well taken.

I think as I continue to work with newer bloggers they just don’t understand the process and why it takes awhile to make those connections. The payoffs are so great though and worth it for sure. That should be our end goal anyway, what we are here to achieve.

I have a few clients that have been blogging for years but used their blogs as just a place to send people to read information. There were no comments and certainly no community. Once I shared with them what you’re sharing here it’s like the lightbulb just went on. A couple of them have been implementing what I’ve taught them and having tremendous success. It really doesn’t take that much when you put the work into it.

Blogging is very time consuming but it’s SO worth it. Guess that’s why I’m so passionate to help others myself. I know the benefits it can bring them and we both just want them to have massive success as well.

Great job with this one Donna, way to go. You rock it girl and loved your headline.

      Hi Adrienne,

Weather they are new bloggers or have been around for a while, many don’t understand the process of blogging and how well it pays off in the end.

I do get surprised too when a client comes to me that has been blogging for a while and their comments are like a graveyard. Gosh…it’s pretty simple strategy to do as we both know it, but once they apply it boom…they start having their own community of people coming to their blogs.

Isn’t it great to have a client implement what you teach them and then you can share the joy of their success? This is why we are so passionate about this business Adrienne!

Yes blogging takes our time, but when done correctly, it is worth every minute of it. Plus teaching others a thing or two is the best part of it.

It is so good to know that you have grown with your blog. The best thing is that when you learn something, you write about it to educate others. You always provide good value.

Yes, it is time consuming, but it is a business. If we are serious and work smartly, we build a strong foundation with our blogs and then we can couple that with marketing.

One must have a passion for it, or else the fizzle out!

    Donna,

This is so funny. What a fun premise for a post! Although I must say it made me tired thinking about all this stuff I should be doing… I need to be better with my emails, they’re automated right now but I do hope to be more personal if I can ever find them time…

And I know it’s all about priorities, but for me, I guess I’m just in the habit of doing things a certain way and I’ll need to re-train myself to do things differently. The only problem is, I can’t seem to find time to do that either!

Sigh. Do you work full time in addition to your blog? How do you find time to do all you do?

      Hi Brittany,

I just had to play around with this title…he he he

First of all my friend, never should on yourself! When we think of what we “should” do, it gets us to a place of procrastination, or having bad feelings about ourselves…so eliminate that word from your vocabulary and you will change your mindset. I just had to say this because I stopped shoulding on myself years ago and am more happy!

I am a full time blogger and internet marketer, and coach. That fills up my life. I do have another business that I’ve been doing for years consulting people. I’ve been an entrepreneur for most of my life…just cannot work “for the man!”

As for time: Set up a DMO! Work smart and not hard. Make the time to get all your priorities down on paper.

I would say firstly to put up your main goal on top of the sheet of paper, then write down all the things you need to do to achieve that goal. Each and every day set some time to do so.

Make sure you don’t get “stuck” on wasting time. The key here is focus. I know the pain! I couldn’t do this either, so I had to download an mp3 hypnosis tape I listened to for focusing on business…It helped.

If you ever need to reach out about this…contact me we can chat a bit. Your blog is fantastic and I love what you do, especially on your “Spiritual Page” I would like to get together with you.

    Hey Donna,

This is an incredible write up, you always have a way of sharing what needs to be shared!

Blogging indeed sucks, and there is nothing bad at all to say this for once. One thing with blogging is at its early stage when you have to deal with maybe 5 or at most 10 comments, emails and all that, one tend to contain it. But as you grow, it becomes very tasking.

At this stage the only that will keep you in the game is your passion for blogging, because the absence of this is going to make you reply to comments after a week a loyal reader left one on your blog.

Frankly speaking writing a post used to be a great deal for me, but just as passion have much role to play, it gets better and easier these days. The only thing there is to learn the easiest way to go by your business of blogging.

One thing that is sure is that nothing good comes easily, so the price for building a community blog is staying focused and determined at all time otherwise a stage will come when the whole thing look so messed up and at that stage one can truly voice out that blogging sucks.

I really enjoyed reading, just one of those your awesome write ups 🙂

Hope you are having a great day my friend?

      Hi Jackson,

Glad you enjoyed this post. Blogging does come easier as we go along. If we see it as a business, it becomes more exciting. It can suck if one doesn’t have a DMO to follow.

As long as we are organized and don’t get all caught up in just focusing on our blogs, we can breeze through so much more easily. There are so many other things to do and our blogs are part of our business.

Yes, nothing ever comes easy. Once we are at peace with that, we can set aside all distractions and focus on the big picture. Each and every step we make is a wonderful experience.

Oh let us not forget the perks of blogging…all those connections of people all around the wold we would never meet unless through a blog. Connections like you my friend.

Thank you for your wonderful input,

    Hi Donna,

Great Post and your title grabbed me right in.

Indeed, blogging is hard work and time consuming and to be honest with you, sometimes when I get overwhelmed, I say what did I get myself into and at the beginning it really sucked for me. LOL.

But as I learn and get to know people through it and build relationships, I start to feel the fun and value of it and if not for blogging I wouldn’t have got to know the wonderful people like yourself, and I wouldn’t have learned what I learned so far and still learning. It doesn’t suck anymore for me.

Thanks Donna for a great share as always and you did deliver your point in a very smart and fun way. Enjoy the week ahead.

At the same time, I enjoy the challenge. So I’m just working hard, learning hard, and trying hard while learning from people like you and many others. Meanwhile, I will also continue learning from my own experiences.

    Hi Donna,

I absolutely love blogging, even though from time to time I get tired. You are so right! It’s not for the faint of heart. It’s tedious, demanding, and hard work.

There is a lot more to it than meets the eye as you said. I won’t re-hash your points, except to say that if a business is going to blog they better get real and straight about what it’s going to take to succeed.

The problem is that too many business owners have gotten caught up in the wrong habits, activities and mindsets to effectively blog and network well online.

    If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me;

    * You write how many posts and how many words?
    * You read how many blog articles per week?
    * You leave how many comments?
    * …

    “That’s just too much work!”

Really, cause in my opinion what sucks are the businesses that are too lazy to get off of their duffs and get serious about marketing their business in 2014. It’s not 1996 anymore, yet too many businesses want the easy way out still.

Let’s just throw some money at this, this, this and this and see what our ROI is…

That’s a lesson in failure in today’s marketing.

The great companies like Southwest Airlines get it. If you’ve never seen their blog I encourage you to Google it. They do a FANTASTIC job of connecting with their online followers.

If they get it, so shouldn’t we as small business owners?

The biggest issue I find are the excuses that are preventing businesses achieving success online and offline because they won’t put the effort into it. Of course their is time! You make the time for what is a priority.

The reality is that it’s not a priority because business owners by far and large are not willing to take the time to learn. Yet, we know that learning the key to all business success. We ought to always be learning.

I once heard someone say a long time ago that if you’re doing the same things in six months from now that you are doing today you are on your way to being out of business.

    That is the simple truth!!!

Great post Donna! I know you love to share your thoughts we me on my blog and it’s never a problem for me. In fact, I love your “rants.” So, just thought I would share with you some of my thoughts as well on this topic of which I’m just a little passionate about.

I hope you have an amazing week Donna!

      Hey Don,

Thank you so much for adding so much information to this post. Yes, blogging takes work! It takes time and is so worth the effort.

If little guys like us can put in the time, the constant learning curve and the entire package of blogging and marketing, what about big companies? Yes, some do “get it” like Southwest Airlines (Yep…seen the way they engage with people) And others…well if they are not on board with the new way of marketing, they will be the ones that are doing the same thing six months from now.

When I talk to small companies and give them the strategies they need to make their business work I would say maybe 1 or 2 out of 10 will put it into action. I’m working with a salon right now and they are catching on so fast, it’s amazing.

It is a high priced salon with amazing products. I had a vision for them. They listened. I was hired to oversee one of their staff members grow their blog and facebook presence. They are new at this and we are setting up their blog as I write, but they took action on social media and Wow…But that’s a story for another day. 🙂

So true, learning is the key to success. If anyone wants to grow their business, they MUST be learning every day. I’m kind of lucky because I split learning curves with my husband/partner. We dedicate a few hours every night on learning curves. It’s like parallel playing that kids do he he.

      Thanks again Don!

    Hi Donna,

You nailed it. You just created the checklist for every blogger to follow. 15 of them, which sucks but will eventually turn into profit in the long run.

Blogging is a game of fun, a road of hardships and good profit money on the long term.

Keeping the spirit high in blogging is not an option, it is a necessity.

    Have a great day. 🙂

If people agreed with these 15 points they cannot sustain being a blogger. If they see it as a part of a business, they will profit in the long run.

One has to have the desire to sustain the ups and downs of the business because our blogs are a central point of our business!

Donna, love this one! It is so ironic – if you get addicted to blogging you love it but yet you hate it on other days because IT is SO MUCH work! And you are never done learning as things change at a rapid pace in the online world. If it’s not SEO it’s social and if not that it’s WordPress and other coding. It’s never ending. If I had known beforehand how much work and time was involved I’m not sure I would have jumped in but I did with 2 feet. I don’t regret it though, I can’t imagine how much I’ve learned in the past 4 years. It’s amazing what we can do when we put our minds to it. Great share Donna, hope all is well and enjoy the rest of the week!

      Hi Lisa,

Blogging is a lot of work. For me, I don’t get into the nuts and bolts of coding, or not even a plug in. I leave that all up to my service. That saves me the time I need to write blogs and engage with others.

More than that, I’m spending more time marketing and keeping on top of the latest marketing strategies. That’s where most of my time goes and also for the clients coming in. Things have changed in business during the last several months and that’s a good thing!

I had to make many changes with the new twist in business and needed to start hiring some people to do more for me.

I am glad I jumped into blogging, even though it does take time it is worth all of it to me.

I zipped over here from Facebook thinking you had lost it 🙂

I haven’t been on your blog in a while and since I so enjoy your posts, I figured you had something up your sleeve. Excellent headline to cause a little stir.

Blogging can suck, but anything you have to do that is work can suck also. Some people don’t want to put in work to build their business because it can suck a lot.

But then there are days when you help that one person, when you meet a great person (like you) or join a great group, when someone compliments your blog or facebook page…. Then it rejuvenates you and makes you forget all about the sucky part of the business.

    I don’t love everything I do… I don’t hate everything I do… But overall, I love it!

Great post! Donna you rocked it once again!

      Hi Leslie,

He He He…No I didn’t loose it at all lol just a fun headline!

Blogging is a funny business. Reason being is that some come in with false promises that they are going to make money as soon as that blog is up..NOT!

As you know it takes patience and persistence, engaging with others before we can sell anything.

There are those times when we all think it sucks, but 99% of my time I don’t. It comes down to our passion for blogging and meeting people and getting that great feeling that someone out there was helped by you.

But, keeping our marketing hats on all the time, we can logically stick to our plan of business as usual. The great thing about it is that it is all in our own hands. We can choose any direction we want. As we grow and learn, we have the power to grow our business.

      Thanks for coming by,

Glad you enjoyed this one! Yes, Blogging might look like it sucks, but if we have the passion in our hearts, the patience of knowing that any business takes time to grow and the persistence to stick with it…it is a win win situation.

Just look at the percentage of people who do stick with it…something like 3%!!! That top tier of people have the stamina and business mind that know they will “make it” in the business.

I’m sure that with some trial and error you will be able to hit those targets. Whenever I do a marketing campaign, I know before I spend a dime, that there will be split testing, and many trial and errors. Then, things flow out of nowhere!

That is the fun of it all. It’s like a giant puzzle we need to put together that never ends.

    Hi Donna,

Lol…what a lovely post, one that all of us enjoyed I am sure 🙂

Yes, blogging has it’s share of ups and downs, and it does suck at times! I wouldn’t say writing a post is the problem, as that’s the easiest part for me, if I am not tied up with things! But all that follows up later, the promotion and comments seem to be the never ending matters to take care of!

Yes, reciprocation is required and that’s fair enough too I guess, unless we know the other persons facing problems, when we all go over and help them out. Other than that, commenting on your own posts, which I always do after I make my visits first to the person who visited mine (this never ends and my own post comments suffer as they are SO many and I take time replying!!), and commenting on your regulars is time consuming.

Not to mention the new blog community and forum at my blog, where many Ahaians (Aha!NOW Blog Community members as they are fondly called) share their posts, so those too need attention and comments. I guess you can imagine how much it ALL sucks for me lately!!

Don’t worry, you don’t have to visit my blog till tonight, as I don’t have the latest post up yet…lol…so will save you the trouble!

But yes, blogging IS time consuming and certainly not a quick way to make money, not for the real, professional blogger at all. If done right, it can surely make you a lot of money, but things take time and effort, so keep the faith and carry on.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

      Hi Harleena,

Thanks so much for sharing all that you are doing on your blog and especially with your “Ahaians” It is a task that does take time. But I know you well and I do know that you are passionate about it.

You have been around for a long while and built a community of trusted readers. People love your blog and now you have your community set up…that does take a lot of time out of your day I’m sure!

Blogging is time consuming and yes, not a quick way to make money. But is any business on this planet a way to make money from the start? Hmmm….I don’t think so.

I’ve been on the other side of business…offline for many years, and I had no expectations of making money fast. However I built up my business and it is still there although I’m not as active as I used to be. What I did was build a strong foundation…one of trust. That was my secret sauce of success.

I just brought it online, and replicated the trust factor, over-delivering, and a strong passion for others. It’s a win win.

      Thanks for sharing so much,

    Hi Donna!

As soon as I saw the title of this post in my Feedly, I just had to come and see what it was all about. Funny!

I really don’t think blogging is really much different than traditional work, although the tasks are different. I could say that driving to work, running errands, trying to impress your boss, networking with co-workers, attending meetings etc. all suck as well. 🙂 I guess that’s why I’m a blogger!

The thing that makes blogging challenging is you have to manage all of these tasks and time effectively on your own. You don’t have someone telling when and how to do stuff – you’re the responsible one. Your income is largely based on how productively you work. This is challenging for many people because they’re used to having someone organize all of their time for them.

The problem arises when people get into the mindset that blogging is passive income, when really, it’s the exact opposite. As a blogger and business owner, I spend most of my time working! Sure, you get the luxury of “working when you feel like it” but it’s really just a balance of spending your waking life working and doing other things inbetween working. If I didn’t absolutely love the work I was doing, I’d probably go insane.

As you laid out, there’s so much to do and our tasks are constantly changing – but it’s the beauty of the business in my opinion. Most people can’t handle it. The ones that can and are willing to do so are the ones that reap all of the rewards.

Fun post Donna, I really enjoyed reading it!

      Hi James,

Thank you for your awesome comment! Yes, blogging is a business and as owners of this business we are responsible for all tasks at hand.

Bloggers don’t have that employee mentality, but instead have the mindset that they can work hard at their business, but have the option of taking time when they need it, instead of asking for time from their “boss.”

It is a mindset and one needs to put their business hat on in order for business to flourish. It does take time just like any business offline too. But once we have that passion, the endurance, and always getting excited for the next step we can take in our business, we can sustain the test of time.

The best part is that things always change and that’s what keeps us on our toes. I wouldn’t trade it for any other business in the world!

For the most part I love blogging but yeah there are days when I say “man this sucks”. Especially when there isn’t much money coming in. That’s sure to make anyone lose their passion for blogging.

But I still think it’s the greatest business in the world. It’s the best platform to build relationships with our audience. When I get an email or some other note from someone who got hired from a job I posted or the resources I shared was just was someone needed, man that gets me on this high…I know you know what I mean. 🙂 It makes all the hard work so worth it. To me that’s the true meaning of success.

And the blogging community…my goodness they are the best bar none! Everyone is so helpful and motivating, and this includes you missy :)!

But yes, blogging is definitely a love-hate relationship :). Great post Donna! Have a great new week.

      Hi Corina,

Thank you so much for sharing your feelings in this post! I think we all get those days where we say to ourselves …this sucks! But with an email that you received that you mentioned, wow…it can’t get better than that.

Plus the blogging community is composed of the best people I’ve ever met in my life! Hey…that is how I met you and I’m sure glad I did!

The blogging business requires patience and persistence. And when you think about it doesn’t any business require that?

Once we stick it out, money just flows in.

I feared blogging for years Donna. Really. I feared succeeding because succeeding meant taking on more responsibility. AKA, doing the 15 things you noted. And I thought doing these things would suck, since I’d be so busy and would open myself to criticism.

But it’s not all that bad. As you get clear you’ll find doing stuff to inspire more folks is fun. Then you even do less things after doing more stuff as you learn the principle of effective action.

Then you free yourself and more folks by doing a bit fewer things but, learning in-depth, how to do these things intelligently, to reach the max number of targeted folks in minimal time.

Then you free yourself by forming personal bonds with folks, one at a time, through blog commenting and emails.

Perfect example;the bond I forged with Adrienne inspired her to review my first eBook 4 months ago, without me asking her. That post boosted my eBook sales and brand visibility. The 1-to-1, friend-building thing makes your life more enjoyable, and in the long run, saves you year’s worth of work, and struggle, and heartache. Off the bat, you’ll likely do comfy by confining things as a blogger and then, as you evolve, you’ll do uncomfortable but freeing things to see greater and greater success and to enjoy the ride.

    Love it Donna.

      Hi Ryan,

I just cannot imagine you fearing blogging. Yes, I know you for a long time and seen how you grew as a person, as a businessman, and most of all as a blogger.

Yep…those responsibilities come with blogging and some people are just not cut out for it. But you my friend, stuck it out and now look at you! All those ebooks…all the attention and speaking at NYU…you became a superstar once you let go of your fears.

      Living proof of this post!

And yes that example you have given happens often. One person does an act of kindness and all of a sudden we become friends…real friends! That’s why I love blogging!

      Hi Joan,

So glad you Love this post! It was a little different twist I wrote to capture some attention and to make the point that blogging is not for everyone.

It’s not a get rich quick solution, but rather a business. New bloggers need to know this.

I had given a hint about marketing here, but I think that will come in a later post. This is the beginning of something that I am planning out….more posts on marketing and of course, our blog is a huge part of the strategy.

When I saw the title of this post I dropped everything to hop over here because I knew you of ALL people had to be kidding with this! Awesome content and advice – as always – Donna. Once in awhile I look back over the last 4 years and think of how far I’ve come and can’t believe just how naive I was when I first started. But the thing was I DID get help, I DID pay for and follow the “expert” advice but in those days there was still a lot left unsaid about the day to day challenges of blogging. Personally, I LOVE blogging and am so very happy I found my way to this online world. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Hi Marquita,

Gotcha didn’t I lol. Good point! When we first start, we need others to help us with our blogs and you did get the help and pay for that “expert” advice. That is a good start back in that day.

No, they weren’t teaching the challenges of blogging, nor the importance of social media back then. But we learn as we go don’t we?

Yes I love blogging too and the online world is the only place I ever want to be!

There is no other business I would rather be than in blogging. Yes, the key word business, because with all the other marketing I do, it always comes back to my blog.

One has to have the stamina and understand of blogging to do it year after year. The perks are meeting wonderful people like you!
