How Bloggers Gain Authority

How Bloggers Gain Authority

Bloggers are always looking for ways to gain authority with their readers.

If you’re a blogger, I’d say you’re already on the right track.

I mean, just by the fact that you operate a blog means that you have some notion of the value of building authority.  Most bloggers, in fact, start blogging for just that reason… to gain authority with an audience that they want to influence in some way.

Maybe you want people to follow you in your business opportunity, or buy your books or your affiliate products.

Whatever your reason for wanting to establish your authority online, you know it’s a key ingredient to your success.

Who will join a team leader, or buy from a marketer if they don’t consider him/her to carry any authority?

So how can you gain that authority?

How Bloggers Gain Authority

You can start building authority in your niche, and with your target audience, by creating a high quality content.

The content can’t just be of high value, though, it needs to rise to the level of problem solving value.

As a blogger, you need to know your audience.  You need to know their aspirations, their goals, their pains and their problems.

Most of all, you need to be someone who delivers solutions to their problems.  When you post “solutions content” on a consistent basis, you gain authority in the eyes of your target audience.

Special: The Truth About Blogging

Re-purpose Your Content

You gain even greater authority by re-purposing your blog content.

Take your valuable blog posts and turn them into videos.

Give your audience the same kind of great value face to face, or with a PowerPoint presentation.

Put the video on YouTube with a link-back to your originating blog post.

You could do the same thing with a podcast hooked into your iTunes channel, or an e-book that you are selling, or its free version that you give away in a forum.

The idea is to share a blend of content formats with your audience.

All these different content versions can be run through your social media platforms, and even promoted with paid posts, tweets and the like.

The main thing you want to do is (1) originate a piece of content on your blog, and then (2) have it ripple out far and wide through a variety of platforms and content types.

When you blend a variation of your content in this way, your authority can be boosted immensely.

Go To The Head of the Class

I think you can see how to build your authority by delivering great content on your blog and re-purposing it off your blog site, while linking back to it.

Now, it’s time to go to the head of the class.

Step up to the podium and give your lecture, read your book report or whatever.

You can do this in different ways.

Tutorials

One method you can use it to offer a series of tutorials on a specific niche topic.

This can be in the form of things like a 5-part blogging series to show your readers how to accomplish something, or a 3-part video series that you offer as a free giveaway.

You can think of lots of ways to deliver a tutorial series, but the main thing is to do it.

The reason is this.

If you write a blog post about something like “How to do Facebook Ads,” your audience sees you as someone who knows something about the topic.

However much “authority status” you reap from a single blog post, though, is multiplied many times over by developing a whole series on the same topic.

Do you think people recognize your authority on the topic as much if you wrote a single blog post on it, as they would if you announced…

  • “Read my upcoming 5-part series on mastering Facebook ads,” or
  • “get my free e-book called “The Easy Way To Master Facebook Ads,” or
  • “opt in here for my 3-step video course to master Facebook Ads.”

People instinctively believe that a person delivering a serialized training, or “course,” has unquestioned authority to do so.

Interviews

When you interview a recognized authority on a niche topic, you actually gain some recognition as an authority on the topic yourself… especially if you interact on an equal footing with the person you’re interviewing.

Think, for instance, what kind of authority would “rub off” on you if you interviewed 3 prominent herbalists.  If your blog was about herbal remedies, don’t you think this would raise your authority level with your readers?

Now, even more…

If other herbalists started interviewing you on their blogs, or on a YouTube video or in a Google Hangout, you’d gain an even higher level of authority.

In that case, you’d be a recognized leader in your field because the perception is that others in the field are eagerly seeking your advice and expertise.

Getting interviewed by other influencers in your field doesn’t just happen, of course.  You’ll need to do some work to see that it does.

One way is to develop great content and share it with some of those influencers.  You can follow that up with a straight out request to be interviewed by them.  Or you can suggest an interview swap between the two of you:  “You interview me, a few months later, I’ll interview you.”

Yet another method is to simply interview some people who you know are influencers in your niche.  If some say no, others will say yes.

If you conduct these interviews on a fairly regular basis, some of the folks you interview will very likely offer to do the same for you.  If they don’t, then you’ll have some clout to yield in simply asking them to.

Presentations

The best way to go to the head of the class is to start hosting presentations.

Anyone who gives presentations to others gets awarded instant authority by those in attendance.

This is absolutely the fastest and most direct way to gain that instant authority for yourself.

Presentations can be in a variety of formats.

Doing a video series of tutorials, as we discussed above, is one type of presentation, and does ratchet up your credibility and authority.  But there are other methods, too.

One type of presentation that works really well here, is to offer a training course.  This is particularly effective when you charge for the course.

As a general rule of thumb, the more you can charge, the higher your authority can score.  But that’s a bit of a tight rope to walk, because the higher your rates, the lower will be the number of your paying customers.

So keep your prices as high as you can while garnering the highest attendance possible.  The greater the attendance, the greater your exposure and therefore, authority ranking.

While video trainings and multiple week training courses are a great way to build your authority, nothing is faster and simpler for achieving this than webinars.

Webinars are an amazing way to fill the seats with adoring students, just waiting for you to take your position at the head of the class.

Free webinars give you the chance to showcase your skills, personality and expertise to large numbers of people.  Many of them will eagerly purchase your products and services at the end of the webinar, and in response to your follow up emails.

Paid webinars are a business all of their own, and have the potential of catapulting your authority through the ceiling.

Together, both free and paid webinars are unparalleled in the leverage they can give to your branding and authority campaign.

If you’d like to learn how to present your own webinars, from software set up to product sales, to the actual presentation itself…

    Hi Donna,

    Great post here.

It’s true that a lot of bloggers want to gain some sort of authority and the methods you provided here are some very good starting points.

I especially agree with re-purposing your content. A blog post is fine but many people out there aren’t readers. They’re visual learners and like to listen to audio instead. So repurposing your content in audio … or video … or even in presentation format would be a terrific idea.

Also, tutorials and interviews are superb ways as well. Especially interviews.

And the great thing about it is, you don’t even have to be the expert. You just have to interview people and you’ll be perceived as an expert based on that.

Some really great info here, Donna.

      Hey Andrew,

Thanks for all these great ideas you have given. I like the one about creating a podcast! Never thought of that one and I thank you.

This year I’m trying to do more visuals for those who have to read tons of pillar posts every day. I’m mixing things up a bit and implementing an interview each month with someone. I’m actually making my list today lol.

Great advice Donna! As a blogger I have interviewed many bloggers in early days, I have paused it because nowadays everyone is doing this so it becomes duplicate sometimes because answers of the expert are same everywhere.

However, I will think of the advice you have shared here.

    Hi Donna

Thanks for your tips on blogging 🙂

I have been blogging for over 12 months now and I was loosing my way a getting side tracked.

But with your tips I need to get some authority back into my blogging and start my Google hangout presentations again.

It’s just to get started and keep the momentum going.

What are your thoughts about Google Hangouts compared to Webinars as Google is free and webinar software you have to pay for?

I will restart doing my Google Hangouts next week thanks for the motivation.

      Hi David,

Welcome to my blog. As for your question I love Google Hangouts to use for certain things like giving free information, or using it for a webinar.

What I like to do is to use is webinar ignition to do my webinars on. Sometimes I do them on Google+ Hangouts via invitation if it is a webinar that has a crowd.

    Hi Donna,

Reading this article makes my head wobble! There’s so much to do to become an authority. So many choices it’s confusing where to start and what to do. 🙂 You’re absolutely fantastic that you’ve gotten all this together.

I would like to be able to do it all. I know it’s not possible to get it all done at one time. Great info though and much to think about. Maybe laying out a plan to see how to get all this done.

Still very interested in doing a PowerPoint presentation and building that funnel.

I’ve definitely got posts to re-purpose so I guess we’ll talk about that in our next lesson! 🙂

    Hi Donna

    Really helpful post thanks.

I already do some re-purposing (that’s one of the things my coach is very keen on). I need to do more!

You reminded me that I have a series of articles ticked away that I should re-purpose, so that’s another thing to add to the ever-growing “to-do” list!

I’m one of those people who prefer text to video – probably an old-fashioned breed, but I like to make notes and reading is easier to come back to when I get interrupted, or want to review something and can’t quite remember where it was in the video. So that’s a good reason to re-purpose – proved by my own preferences.

Enjoy the rest of your week, Joy

It’s not old-fashioned to prefer text to video. I do understand how that is. There is a time and place for everything.

You nailed it Donna 🙂 First of all thanks so much for putting this out.

Repurposing blog content helps us reach a wide variety of audience. Some people prefer reading text, some prefer watching Videos and some prefer to download the .pdf and read it when they have the time. By repurposing blog content we can serve the content to audience’s preferred format.

Not just that, we can introduce “variety” and spice up our content instead of bombarding our readers with boring blocks of text.

And if there’s anything that can amplify my reach – I can certainly leverage on that!

Thanks for the wonderful points Donna – love it.

    Have a great weekend ahead!

    Hey Donna,

Post titles like this are very easy on the looking but in developing them you will have to be well seasoned to be able to pass the message across. I must confess, you did an exceptionally and awesome post here 🙂

When it comes to gaining authority as bloggers, one thing that is certain is that it comes from the work you have done in the past. This explains the reason why it’s advised to start well when venturing into it.

The moment a blogger launches a blog, the next thing that follows is the value he adds to it. Value then begets trust and which graduates into problem solving. These are the ingredients a blogger needs to stand tall. In all, the people matters a lot because they are the ones to push you up the ladder of success.

Solving problems in different ways is one sure way to gain authority. Who doesn’t want to identify with Donna, when they know too well she can do great webinars and videos that will practically show them how to solve their problems? This is how we gain authority as bloggers, by helping people solve their problems, putting those wonderful and helpful content before them and so on.

Re-purposing content is also another wonderful and sure fire way to gain authority as a blogger. A whole course broken down into series can keep people coming back and wanting for more, this when they begin to wait for you to launch your work which is a product of your authority in that field.

Donna, I for one is a believer of authority building and I am glad you have shared this wonderful post which clearly explains how we can achieve this 🙂

Thanks for this valuable post my friend and do make sure you have the best the day can ever bring!

      Hi Jackson,

Thank you so much for your kind words. The only way to gain authority is one step at a time, sharing great value, but most of all showing up when people need us.

Honesty is the best policy! I couldn’t teach another person something I haven’t done myself. I will share how many times I banged my head against the wall when things fumbled up. But when I share that with a solution to the problem, people can identify with it. And as you and I well know…it is all about others!

Re-purposing content can be done in so many ways, it’s silly not to even try it. I like to grab a video that I have on one of my blogs and share it on social media. Something that gives a person tips. The response is fantastic

      Thanks so much!

Hello Donna, What an Awesome post my friend! Oh Yeh I got a few great tips I am going to add to my 2015 game plan from reading this one.

I have never really thought about repurposing my content before and love this idea. I did purchase a new video creator and I am looking forward to learning more on how to actually use this.

    Thanks for sharing.. Chery :))

    • Donna Merrill December 11, 2014 at 3:39 pm #

      Hi Chery,

Knowing you, I’m sure you have many things to your 2015 game plan.

You have so much you’ve written, I’m sure you would have no problem to re pruposing your content. Ooo a video creator! That is right up my alley.

You can do so much with video by creating slide shares and talking about something specific you have already written.

Get enough together and you can make a digital product!

      Cheers!

    Hey Donna,

You’ve came up with some great ideas on how to gain authority. It’s funny how you can become an instant authority as soon as you do a presentation on a particular subject you know a lot about. I’ve done a couple of presentations in the past and it’s feels great when people look up to you. Especially when you’re teaching salsa 😉

Repurposing your content is another great idea. Not only does it gives you authority with your audience but also with the search engines. When the search engines sees how diverse your content is on the same subject, this is a great indicator to give you some rank juice!

I’ve don’t a couple of tutorials and to my surprised people liked them. I’ve done them on blogs and I thought of making some videos on different subjects like facebook ads and solo ads. I’ve had some success with them in the past and this is something I may do in the new year!

Webinars are always good as well. Ive seen that you’ve done quite a few. And if you’re consistently doing them, then that tells me that this is the thing to do to build up your authority!

Thanks Donna for the share! Take Care!

      Hi Sherman,

I wish we lived closer so I can take salsa lessons from you! I always wanted to learn how to dance that way.

Repurposing is great because it not only helps with our authority, but as you mention it is a great way for search engines to see the diverse content on the same subject.

I would say you are a great teacher and giving tutorials to others would help them so much. You have a warm personality and would do great on video.

Yes, David and I are kicking out one webinar a month these days. It’s like anything else, once you get used to it, it becomes easier to do.

      Have a great weekend,

    Donna,

This is so awesome, I can’t believe I didn’t think of these tips before! You’re so smart. =) I LOVE the idea of turning a blog post series into a “course”. Why not, right? Brilliant! I’m totally going to do that sometime.

I’ve been meaning to branch out into podcasting and video but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. Someday =)

I really do want to branch out into webinars in the future too, I think they’d be really fun. When I do, you’d better believe I’ll be picking your brain!

      Hi Brittany,

Why not re purpose a blog series into a course? You just have to tweak it and there you go. It can be an ebook or a digital product whereby you create slides and talk about it on each part.

I would say video will be a better choice than podcasting only because if people see you they get to “read” so much more of who you are – not only your voice, but your facial expressions and so on. You can do a one minute video to introduce a slide share….oh there are so many ways to do it girl.

Come on over and pick my brain anytime!

    Hi Donna,

You have said it all and I couldn’t agree more. 🙂

We have to repurpose our content either it’s on video, podcast, slide presentation, etc. I think when you create a tutorial video on how to do things, it shows more your authority. Here on the video you cannot cheat. You’re doing it LIVE and showing to people “how you do things.”

Webinars are good too. But like some people are not into video blogging, I’m not sure I want to pursue the Webinar thingy. But I would love to go to the NEXT LEVEL such as doing a podcast, writing an ebook, or even do a public speaking sometimes at Meetup groups.

Anyway, thank you so much for sharing so much of your knowledge. Hope you have a great week. And keep up doing a great work coz as usual you are awesome!!

Great stuff here. I especially like the part about interviews, which is why I’ve tried getting more people to do video interviews with me, which in some fashion I later integrate into a blog post. I have fun with those, love being interviewed myself, and think it always benefits both parties when done right.

Done it a few times and it really gets people interested because of the two party conversation.

    Hi Donna,

What a great explanation for others to follow. We all have to start at the beginning right and crank out that awesome content that will help our readers learn and /or solve their problems.

The more you help others the more they’ll spread the word about you and the more your name will get out there. That’s how we become and influencer and/or authority.

The various ways we can start to put our content out for everyone to see is great since not everyone is eager to learn the same way.

You are becoming a master at teaching this Donna. Anyone who listens to your advice will go very far.

I know for me I never set out to be an influencer or authority figure but that’s the beauty of this. It’s not something we set out to achieve because your readers and admirers are going to make sure you become what they believe you to be. Trust me when I say it definitely can open some doors for you.

Another great share, thank you so much and I hope you’re having a great week. Can’t wait to see you soon.

      Hi Adrienne,

I too, never set out to be an authority..it just wasn’t part of my mindset. I just share the best information I could, made relationships with others and enjoyed every step of the process…I still do.

It is so true Adrienne, the more we help others, the more our name naturally gets “out there” because it comes from our heart, our caring. When things are genuine, people will talk.

Many years ago with my off line business, this was the very same thing. All of a sudden radio hosts were calling me for interviews, TV stations had me on and it lead to my own radio show. I was featured in the news papers so many times.

Did I ever plan this? NO but I was nervous as heck when doing it. My first reaction was No Way, I’m scared! But for the sake of my business and helping others I did it.

The same mindset I have goes online too.

      Can’t wait to see you

    Hi Donna,

Very your authority building tools! Love this advice and I’ve followed it quite o bit over the past 5 months. I added a few channels to my promoting arsenal, as well as to my services arsenal.

I started writing eBooks, I also began coaching, and just last night I did my first cyber presentation, lecturing from paradise to a class at NYU. It was a blast! Enjoyed the heck out of it, and I really vibed with the idea to branch out a bit.

Seeing someone share their knowledge across multiple channels is a positive kind of showing off. You’re displaying range and are appealing to audiences across a wide range of channels, which always helps one build their brand to an ever growing audience.

    Donna, love the post.

    Thanks for sharing!

I’m so excited about your cyber presentation that you have done lecturing from paradise to one of the most prestigious university – NYU! That, compiled with the many books you have written and your blog being so well known makes you an authority my friend.

When we share our knowledge across multiple channels it is like a positive way of showing off. But this is what we must do in order to teach others.

    Hi Donna

Very useful post to excel in the field of blogging and internet marketing.

In every profession and person has three stages 1) basic or we can say it a learning stage 2) advance or implementing stage 3) and authority or creation stage.

But blogging is a typically unique field where one doesn’t have to wait for a long to become an authority and take fast steps to reach to this stage.

Without authority one has to take extra efforts to sell. He has to run after brands to make with them contract to sell at his blog.

The steps you mentioned in this post to gain authority are not so difficult to take and with consistency one can build his unique voice and make his followers believe in him.

Every effort in this regard should be focused to achieve the goal of gaining a trustworthy position and develop a trusted personal brand.

Thanks a lot for this very useful post.

      Hi Mi Muba,

To gain authority won’t take much at all as long as one is trustworthy, has good ethic and of course being consistent with their blogs.

Some people take a longer time because they do not have the knowledge nor discipline to reach this point. They may be scattered and not focused. They also may have no knowledge about marketing and sales.

Most of all, some are taught to “fake it till you make it” These are the people that need to be lead by other bloggers to teach them all about attaining authority.

You my friend have so much knowledge when it comes to teaching on your blog. You are a true businessman. So maybe it comes a little easier for you.

But as with anything else, we need to be trustworthy and develop a trusted brand no matter what stage we are at.

      Thank you!

    Hi Donna,

Wonderful post indeed and a great reminder for many of us too 🙂

Yes, most bloggers just write and blog ad don’t really think of repurposing their content or don’t know the various other ways it can be shared and spread to a whole lot of other places. That includes me too! Though with me it’s mainly the lack of time to catch up with things and now the new community and forum at my blog, just doesn’t leave me any time in hand, though all of these are still on my to-do list.

You are doing so well with the webinars, videos, and other stuff and that is surely the way it should be done. Yes. interviews are wonderful and from the few I’ve done on my blog, especially Yaro’s and Neil Patel’s – they taught me so much I’d say, so learning never stops from all of the possible places.

Honestly speaking, I never started blogging or as a blogger to gain authority, but surprisingly that’s how it’s worked out to be when people look up to you and take you as their mentor or seek solutions from you for their problems. This surely makes you responsible and you need to play your part of helping those who seek it from you. It’s the main reason for starting the forum at my blog and I am glad it’s become a place where everyone is out there to help each other.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

      Hi Harleena,

It is so wonderful how your blog grew to enormous heights. We can do so much with an existing blog and re purpose it. I had no idea long ago how to do this, but as I tried here and there, it became easy.

I know you have a lot on your plate and this is one of your to-do’s. It is so funny that you never started blogging to gain authority, and now you are an authority blog he he he

But you are doing what you love the most with your forum at your blog. It is a place whre everyone helps each other. You sure have grown so much since I’ve met you and I’m grateful we are friends.

    Hi Donna,

Indeed, there are many different ways to build authority as a blogger. The more we can use our little gray cells the more we can create ideas and use them.

One of the main reasons why I wanted a new blog design is because I have a vision of what I want to do, and I feel that it will be better for my blog (to help me gain more authority) to have a bigger and more profession blog.

Now I have some 470ish blog posts under my URL and people are loving the look of it.

    Now I’m ready!

Next year I am going to have some great bloggers as guest on my blog on a regular basis and I feel that they’ll be more willing to come if the host looks better 🙂

As you said, interviews, tutorials, and other eBooks or pod casts can help us gain more authority as a blogger.

    Have a wonderful week!

Excellent advice as always Donna! I’ve done a lot of interviews as an author, and I’m getting better at repurposing my content but the one thing I’ve really been wanting to get into more is guest blogging. I have been invited to submit posts to several sites and i would really love to do it but at the moment I’m up to my eyeballs in product creation mode. Once I get through the current project list I’m planning to take a couple of months and just work on things like creating more SlideShare presentations, guest blogging, etc. Hopefully Santa will bring me the virtual assistant I want for Christmas. 🙂

      Hi Marquita,

I hope Santa will bring you a VA and one for me too lol. I know how important it is to be in production mode. You have to be pin focused even though you want to do more guest blogging.

But the year is almost at its end, and so will your product be. 2015 will be your time to do all that you want to do!

    Hi Donna,

This is a powerful and value packed article Donna!

I agree so much with you that there is not much left that could be said, excpet to affirm your points.

Over the last six months I’ve really evolved my articles to include a lot of video in advance of the speaking I will be doing in 2015 around the country. It’s one of the absolute best ways to gain authority quickly if you record the presentations and then re-purpose them. Of course you have a way to connect with the audience to let then know when the videos are available. Maybe that’s via social media or email if you can get their email addresses.

This year I’m planning on adding two new features to my site:

    1. Podcast interviews. I’m starting locally by interviewing local businesses and allowing them to share how they have succeeded online or are complimenting their offline marketing. Talking about business with businesses in a podcast is a great way to get all of our messages out and help people at the same time!!!

    2. Ebooks – I’m going to publish one small free ebook every month and as I get into the habit I intend to write ones for sale on Amazon.

You advice is spot on Donna. I absolutely love what you do!!!! In the near future when I figure out how to record phone interviews I can do them remotely from anywhere. I would love to have you as a guest. If of course you would accept?

I hope you have an awesome week and what a great article again.

I hope you have an amazing week!!!

      Hi Don,

I am loving the way you put your videos in your blog! I get to see who the guy is behind the words written. And may I point out I have the highest respect for what you are doing.

You give so much to people in each and every blog you post. Re-purposing is such a great way to get “the word out”….that is something I’m working on as I write! I’ve given it a shot on my Facebook Page..just short videos and people went wild over them. I received many “thank-yous” just for shooting a 3 minute video that can help them.

Your podcast sound like a wonderful idea. I know you work a lot with businesses and this will further enhance your authority.

I too am starting to write ebooks….2015 is going to be that next phase for me in that area also. Gosh…great minds do think alike he he he.

Of course, I would accept doing a telephone interview with you. Actually, you have been on my mind of how we can do a Google+ hangout, record it and make an evergreen video together. Another one on my 2015 list. If you would accept to do so!

Here’s to another week of success!
