Growing Your Online Business

Grow Your Online Business

You are in business, and you want it to grow.  You may have a grandiose plan in your mind and you may have even started to grow your business. But my question to you is… just how are you growing your online business?

Adapting to change can be difficult in our lives, but there is one thing for sure, change is inevitable.

But change is also the foundation of growth.

When you make the decision to grow your online business, you need to be prepared to adapt to these changes.

It Starts With A Decision

Before you make up your mind about exactly how to take your business to the next level, weigh your decision by looking at the competition.

Do all the research you can possibly do to see what others are doing in similar businesses.

How are they growing? What are their strategies for moving to the next level? How are they putting them into action?

Yes, it will take some of your time, but it sure is worth it in the end.

Consider Your Time

Sure, you want to move ahead and are all ready to do so. But the one thing you need to do is plan your time.

Say you created a product and it sells like crazy. Did you consider the time it takes for customer service? When you roll out a product, technology doesn’t always jive. so you must be ready to deal with those challenges.

Did you offer something like a free phone consultation?

Time is something you need to figure out before you roll out with that product of yours.

These are just some of the ways you need to be ready and able to adjust your business plans on the fly.

Things change all the time, new challenges arise daily, and you need to be able to adapt accordingly.

Be Ready To Grow With It

As your business grows, you need to be ready to grow with it.

This means that you need to be learning each and every day. From the latest in technology, to knowing how to keep the engagement process going with new followers and clients.

You will have to adapt by acquiring new sets of skills. Are you willing to do that?

Your customers will be asking you lots of questions. Are you ready to answer them?

Whirlwind Success "VIP CLUB"

When it all seems so overwhelming, and you just don’t know if you’re up for the challenge, remember this:

Don’t Resist… Just Grow With It

Roll’n With “The Big Boys”

Now that your business is growing, you will be making a shift and hanging out with a new crowd. You need to be ready for that.

I call your new crowd “the big boys”… you know… the people (both the guys and the gals, of course) who are on top of the leader boards, the rising stars in their companies. They are creators of those great online products, and they are the ones making the biggest splash in the world of doing business on the internet.

Yes, you need to adapt to this new, higher level of your business.

You need the confidence within yourself to be able to hang out with them. They may be different people than your blogging friends (if you are a blogger), or your Facebook pals (if you’re a social media-ite).

You may have to adapt by going to live conferences, or getting on the phone with people you used to idolize.

Maybe you’ve taken over the top position from your up-line who bought you into the MLM or direct sales company.

You might find yourself coaching big time product creators, or website operators that you used to go to for advice.

These are “the big boys” and now you’re one of the, hanging out in their circles. Certainly, it can be a bit intimidating because you are the new kid on the block.

It will feel a bit like being the new kid in a strange school.

Sure it’s uncomfortable.

That’s how growth is.

You can’t run from it, and you can’t hide.

It’s time to adapt to your new crowd, your new position, your new level of success.

And let me tell you this: Keep in mind that people are people and at the end of the day, even “the big boys.”

They’re no different than you or me. They’ve just attained success at a level you may just be arriving at.

The key to adaptation is honesty and authenticity.

Appreciate where you are at, and be proud of how you are growing.

Don’t Resist… Just Grow With It

Let “the big boys” know you’re new on the scene, haven’t been here before, and are excited to be working alongside them.

Don’t worry about “acceptance.”

You are adapting to a different world of people.

It’s not about acceptance, it’s about adaptation.

Your Reputation

Whatever you do as your business grows, remember that your reputation will precede you. If you stick to the rules and stay positive you will be OK.

“But what if my product bombs?” you may ask!

“What if I drop off of the leaderboard?”

“What if I can’t keep my downlines motivated?”

“What if my blog drops off the first page of Google?”

You can pretty much assume that things will go wrong.

Not just once in a while, but pretty much every day. That’s what running an online business is like.

There’s an endless parade of challenges.

Special: This “Secret Society” Can Be The Linchpin To Your Online Success

You will have to adapt to failure, adapt to sudden changes, adapt to business models and web platforms you depended on going awry, changing their rules or just shutting down.

Your challenge is not to prevent shifts or even failures, but to adapt to them.

Just maintain your identity and your personal brand.

When you screw up (and you will), own up to it.

Tell people you screwed up and move on. Just get back in the game.

As long as you are honest, sincere and own up to your failures and shortcomings, people will respect you. Not only that, they’ll identify with you. After all, they’re not perfect either.

I goofed!

I just have to do this again!

That’s all it will take. But you will have to adapt to your missteps with honesty and sincerity. And, of course, simply never give up.

Be Flexible

I learned this one the hard way.

I thought everything was in it’s place and I was ready to roll.

Instead of putting my info product on the market, I found out It would be much better to create a launch for it.

I didn’t want to change direction.

I banged my head against the wall. I felt the feeling of doom and gloom. But that lasted for a day.

I knew I had to be flexible. I had to adapt to changes along my way, once again.

I chose to listen to people that had traveled this route before me.

And in the end, I was certainly glad I did.

You see, we can set our goals, but there will be bumps, twists and turns in the road.

Always keep this in mind because being flexible will get you through it.

The Bad With The Good

Of course, you’ll often find that you just have to take the bad with the good.

Not all changes are bad.

Many are good, and some are great opportunities to move forward.

But you’ll still need to adapt, even to good things.

I’ve recently decided to make adaptations in my business.

While my blog has been going great, and my products and online services have kept me on a steady course of “full steam ahead,” I have felt the need to include some of my info product crowd into my blogging arena.

So, I’ve adapted to this new twist in my business by starting a new blog.

It’s called “Donna Merrill Buzz,” and I’m pretty excited about it.

The tagline on my new blog is “Give Me 15 Minutes, I’ll Give You The World.”

That’s because the format will be to conduct 15-minute video interviews with prominent internet marketing influencers, and showcase them on the “Buzz” blog.

Sign up on my Donna Merrill Buzz notification list.

I can’t really tell you exactly how it will all play out because I don’t have a perfectly clear sense of direction on my new undertaking.

I can promise you this, though.

There will be twists and turns, learning curves and challenges.

And I can also promise you that whatever comes my way, I will adapt to it.

So what are your blogging and online business challenges these days?

Do challenges get you down at times?

How do you adapt to the steady flow of changes?

And yes, the big dogs are just people. As I interview them, and talk to them, they are humble and helpful. I even gave them some pointers myself especially when it comes to social media. Some are even camera shy.

    Hi Donna,

Great post here. Growing a business is tough and is a lot of work .. and what you explained here is necessary. I think many people, myself included, don’t think about the time factor it takes AFTER coming out with a product. Like you said, you need time for customer service, etc. That’s something to really pay attention to.

Really valuable points here in this post, Donna. Great job.

      Hi Andrew,

Yes, we sure need to pay attention to the time it will take us after coming out with a product. If we don’t think of that one, customer service will go down and we will be out of business.

Time is something we always have to consider in every step of our growing businesses.

    Hello Donna,

It is so important to move out of our comfort zone to be able to grow. Such a valuable point you raised when you said we need to grow with our business. I think that is one of the more difficult parts but something that is as essential.

Thanks for this valuable post. It will help so many people who are relying on their online business! Have a great day!

      Hi Nisha,

Staying in our comfort zone will get us nowhere in life itself! Especially when it comes to business If we are online and running our business, there will always be times where we have to step out of our comfort zone.

At first it is scary, but after a while, we can face it and move on to bigger and better things.

      Hi Siphosith.

Thanks so much! There sure is a challenge when we are growing a business. But when doing so, we must consider how to adapt.

It is like moving to a new area. You don’t know anyone..it is uncharted territory, but eventually you find your way around. Start to meet your neighbors, etc.

That’s the analogy that gets me through.

Awesome post, Donna! In reading it, I began to see what people mean by the “fear of success”. I see why we would fear failure, but never could see why anyone would fear success. But of course, growth and success necessarily mean change, and finding yourself in a bigger, more exciting world than before. It’s worth thinking about, and the steps needed for keeping up with your own potential.

      Hi Willena,

Fear of success is quite common. One will think fear of failure would stop us, and some do, but success…yes.

It does mean change in our lives. So we need to be ready just in case it does happen so we can adapt properly.

Hey Donna! Great information as usual in your article and…Love this idea. Was wondering what the BUZZ could be about.

” the format will be to conduct 15-minute video interviews with prominent internet marketing influencers, and showcase them on the “Buzz” blog.”

So I take it you will do the interviews on like a hangout, or webinars on air etc.
Not interviews with the person actually being with you when you conduct the interview.
Isn’t technology wonderful today? Great idea my friend ….buzz with it.

You have outlined some really key skills Donna, for any business owner and when a Business is Growing… who knows what will happen!

I embrace change and growth, but have to work my plan step by step 😉

It is all about adapting along the way in this fast moving world, so research and time planning are key… one can’t always predict the time needed!
so, troubleshooting along the way, at every stage of success or flop gives a good structure to work too…

Interesting about the Big Boys, but growth does mean taking a step up to mingle with those leaders a stage ahead…. that’s where our determination must be solid, and we do not compare to those and be swayed by their goals that are not ours so we are pulled away from our own brand and reputation…

brilliant that you have taken that step up to the next level leadership Donna… you are an inspiration, and I hope you interview yourself for 15 minutes!!

it is so exciting for you to be launching this new project and I love that you’re diving in ready to field all the challenges

      Hi Jacs,

You said it! It is all about adapting along the way, especially those troubleshooting days lol.

Indeed, our own goals are those we have mastered from our own unique way of doing business. The Big Boys are out there, and we can pick up a thing or two from them, but they are following their journey, we cannot try to emulate them.

We do have our own brand and reputation to consider, and from that success is born. Taking each step at a time with pure focus.

I wanted this other blog to be about people meeting other people who have either produced products/services or are influencers in the field. They can be small fries or big boys, it all doesn’t matter The point is for people to see the person behind the product. This way they can resonate with them or not.

And sure, there will be some I affiliate. But I didn’t want to put that on this blog, so I crated another.

Thanks for saying that I’m a brave and marvellous lady…brave? I just go with the flow and if something fails, I just go back to the drawing board Jacs.

    Hi Donna,

“Don’t Resist..Just Grow with it.” I like that a lot!

Change, like failure, can be humbling. I have learned, just like you the hard way, that nothing is what it seem.

People, ideas, and work plans all can change at any given time and our job isn’t just to grow with it but also to flow with it by accepting it.

If we continue to accept change and stay open-minded our reputation will precede us.

It’s okay when change don’t make sense and we must remember no matter how much our business grows we will never know everything.

    Thanks and great job!

      Hi Vernon,

Resisting change only stagnates us in life and in business. But when we grow with it, we do take that chance. We can scrape our knees like we did when we were kids, but get up, put a band aid on it and keep on playing.

When I think of change, I always think of being a child. It was so natural for us to grow with it from crawling to walking. It is deep inside of us. We do have to tap into that because we can all achieve what we want if we don’t resist.

      Thanks for coming by,

I guess I was surprised as anyone, Donna, when you told me what you had in mind for your new “Buzz” blog.

But I certainly can see it taking shape now, and it looks like a pretty exciting step forward.

You’ve really been on a roll with the way you’ve been growing your business, and I know a lot of it is because you’ve reached out to some of the “unapproachables” in online marketing.

Not only do you learn a lot from people who are a few steps ahead of you, but you get a really clear sense of how attainable their success is.

Like you point out, they’re really no different than anyone else. They’re usually just ordinary people who look like they have “genius” and “guru” capabilities simply because they’ve worked so hard to make it look easy.

I think that’s always the mark of really accomplished people. They make things look easy. It’s like that when you’re just looking at results and not the process and effort behind them.

Involving yourself with these sorts of professionals, certainly helps advance you to new levels, and I think that is pretty clear from the things you’ve been accomplishing in your business.

      Hi David,

When I first had the AHA moment of doing this, it did take you a while to absorb I know lol. But I had such a clear vision of how it would all connect.

It all started when we were told to get our sales funnel on the JV ventures. As we banged our heads against the wall, you were doing your thing with our business, and I had to come up with an idea of how to start socializing with other JV’s in order to make our own products work.

Because I’m a die hard blogger, I seen many JV’s putting their stuff on social networks and immediately said to myself “Oh NO!” I want my own property, they I can share it on the social networks.

So the idea came…an interview..a special offer…then placing an ad. As we work together with our products and services I do find your genius ways fantastic, but I have to do this as the social butterfly I am.

So there you have it partner!

    Hi, Donna,

Great tips here, and I resonate with what you’re sharing. Glad to see you say change is the foundation of growth!

I believe that being flexible to change is probably the most important ‘skill’ we can develop with regards to our online businesses.

Yeah, I often wonder what happened to some of the marketers that were popular when I came online many years ago, but do see some of them still going strong.

Love your new title, Donna, reminds me of Kim Roach’s blog. Love the word Buzz! 🙂 Looking forward to it for sure. Cool Cool!

I’ll be starting a podcast show where I interview industry leaders, but that will be later this year. It’s in the planning stages for me too. Don’t have a clear cut name yet, although have 2-3 things I’m considering. It’s exciting, isn’t it?

Yes, change is the foundation of growth. And it is important to know before we step into our own business that there is going to be many changes in our lives that we need to adapt to and grow with.

But you should know that more than others having an off line business for many years, and then an online one. Teaches us a lot doesn’t it? Being flexible is a must, otherwise we cannot go with the flow of business ebbs and tides.

Looking forward to your podcast show where you will be interviewing industry leaders. Kinda doing the same with the Buzz. It sure is exciting isn’t it?

Donna, yes expanding our network is a must.

Once we are on the road of choice to work for ourselves. That is when we accept to change with progressive growth. It is difficult until we allow the hows to naturally fall in place.

My only hold back years ago. Was not to let go of the past even relationships which hurt growth. That choices must be firm and no looking back on negative situations. Just understand this journey will be hard and exciting. Only if you choose it to be.

Thank you Donna, for all this outline. The right way to understand what it takes and getting started.

    Hi Dee Ann,

Oh boy you got the case of the “what if’s” That can stop you in your tracks. I believe it all comes from the mindset.

There are many ways to battle those what if’s in the mind. I know I get them too, but have learned how to self-talk my way out of them and move forward.

Sure…as we grow, it is uncharted territory and those what if’s come to mind…it’s natural. But we must figure out where they are exactly coming from. A knee jerk reaction or something deeper in the subconscious.

For me, it was that subconscious thing that held me back years ago. I couldn’t shake it alone. So I tried different modalities to change that from hypnosis, to therapy, to EMDR rapid eye movement therapy which really cleared things up.

OK I’ll get off my little soap box, but I do want you to know that the What If Land is one to overcome no matter what it takes.

Thank you … yes I’m having my grand opening on Monday with Adrienne as my first guest. I think it is a pretty cool idea too. Just getting people to know others and see if they resonate with them.

    Donna,

I think you are right about going with the flow. It doesn’t matter what we are doing we have to be willing to change when we need to.

For me it is not so much being willing to go with the flow or change when I need to but the fear of the unknown and having the confidence that I can what needs to be done. I know I can do it but there is always that lingering feeling of “what if?”

Your new blog sounds really great. I like the idea of doing 15 minute interviews. I think it is going to be really good.

Great description of what going into buisness on the internet is like.

    Hi Donna,

You raise a good question, one that I always wondered about. If you roll out a big product and you get a lot of questions or feedback, how can you handle it all? How can you make sure that you’re ready to answer them?

I always looked at people others admire as just another person. I understand that you can get excited or nervous about interacting with them. But I never quite understood why people freeze up around celebrities. They people just like us.

Yes, I think owning up to your mistakes is key. And when you do no one can make you feel bad about it cause you already know and have come to terms with it. You can brush yourself off and move on.

My most recent challenge was finding out my site was hacked and malicious code was placed in some files. I had to take it down to repair it. At first I panicked cause I didn’t want people to go to my url and not find me but then I acknowledged that it had to be done and the quicker I addressed it the sooner I’d be up and running again. It was only down for a day, not so bad I guess.

      Hi Lea,

Great question raised of rolling out a product and how can one handle the feedback, the questions, and so on. As I work with my husband there is two of us to do that, but if it grew to a point that kept me up 24 hours, I do have people lined up to take care of that if it does happen. Always have that plan B lol.

I too share the same feeling as you when people freeze up with celebrities. But I know they are just people. In my other business I have counseled many “celebrities” – none of which I would ever mention because it is a confidential business. I seen them as people. But then when I turned on the TV and seen them, I had to do a happy dance for them lol.

As for making mistakes…it will happen and as long as we own up to them, we will be fine.

Gosh I didn’t know you site was hacked. What a terrible feeling that must have been, but then you took care of the problem.

    Hi Donna

There is so much o consider when growing a business online but this has to do with change. Growing is part of life so is in business. If a business isn’t growing, it is heading for trouble.

I like the points that you have raised about challenges in business. I agree that it is part of the process of growth that we cannot avoid but like you have said, we should be prepared for it because it is part of growing.

In all, being flexible in your business is very important. Thanks for this post and I must pass this to others.

      Hi Ikechi,

Life is change! We either have to adapt to it or get stuck. In business it works the same way and we have to get our mindset to understand it. I would never want to see people giving up in their journey in business.

This is why it is so important to be flexible. Also to be prepared for the ebbs and tides that go along with an online business. Many of us will think in terms of failures, but what happens if business grows quickly? We must be prepared for that too.

    Nice article Donna,
    Hi Donna,

One thing you mentioned that struck a cord with me is definitely you need the time to grow your business. Seems like I can never get anywhere due to lack of time. Life is busy and many things get in the way. This is one of my obstacles. I can re-schedule, re-work iems but it never seems to make itself work out. Boy do I need time.

Also another thing that struck me is far that my product will fail. You know I have my eBooks, yet have not published them and when I evaluate it, I know that is part of the problem.

Putting all that aside though, I have to keep the engagement as you noted. I have to learn new skills which I am in the process of doing. I love your roll with the Big Boys! 🙂 Nice.

You’re right. We can’t hide from growth and I think it’s the growth that we are sometimes afraid of. That’s why you’re here. LOL!

      Hi Barbara,

I know you are one busy bee! I also know that you work with limited time on your plate. So my friend, forget the fear!

You have ebooks…push them out! Nothing is perfect you know. And if you look up your “competitors” ebboks I’m sure they are fluff compared to what you can share with your knowledge.

I have a saying “never make a choice or decision out of fear” If you can remember that, you will see that it can go a long way. This advice only comes from my own experience Barbara and since I shifted my mindset, I’m on a roll lol.

Products do fail, so what? You just go back to the drawing board, and see where the failure lies. It may not even be the product itself but rather the marketing technique. It’s all about testing.

      Be fearless…

    Hey Donna,

You’ve read my mind again Donna! Last time it was a post on affiliate marketing, now it’s on growing your business online.

And I was reading this post it brought to the word of “Challenges”

Yes trying to grow your business is an overall challenge. And as you know, I’ve been doing affiliate marketing here online, and yes there have been constant challenges.

    But you know what?

As you mentioned, I’m learning to adapt and be more flexible. Before I had the mindset of “There’s no way but this way”, and for me and a lot of people, with this mentality we tend to stay stagnant.

We need to be like Bruce Lee and be like water for it can take the form of anything. Now days, I anticipate problems which I look as experience and my future blog posts 😉 With challenges you never run out of ideas. But when there are problems there are always great solutions. It’s a relief for me to find these solutions, but now I see the problems as a way for me to relate to my audience even better. In this sense, this is how I adapt and be flexible!

Thanks for sharing Donna! Have a good one!

      Hi Sherman,

What a great share! Indeed, there are always challenges in life itself as well as business. One sure has to be flexible. I too leaned that the hard way lol.

I like the way you have given the analogy that we need to be like Bruce Lee and be like water, because it can take form of anything…I’m going to remember that Thank you!

Challenges do bring ideas. I know that one so well – especially when it comes to affiliate marketing.

I’ve been doing quite a lot of that lately and the more I do, the more ideas flow through my head.

    Hi Corina,

It is so great to know that this post felt like I was talking to you…such a great compliment and thank you.

Oh yea..the big boy club lol. They are perceived as such because they have made a splash online and earned lots of money doing so. But when you start talking to them, they are just like you and I. I have found that making my own shift in this was a pleasurable one. Kindness and reciprocity I found with every one I met.

Our reputation online is important to keep in mind. Everything we do needs to be well thought out, even on Facebook fooling around lol.

But knowing you, I don’t think it is a big issue. You are always helping others and have them in mind.

As for those “what if’s” Never go down that road! That can stop you in your tracks. So instead of what if, think what now? Then go on your journey.

It all starts in our mindset. We have to value ourselves and know that we are all unique and if we write about something or create a product, we have to keep in mind it was done many times before us. But knowing our uniqueness, it is done in a better way!

    Rock on Girl!

I love this post Donna….it’s like you were talking directly to me. 🙂

I have wondered if i would be accepted in the “big boys” club but now I’m going to remember not to worry about acceptance and focus on adaptation and just grow with it…I love that!

Every move I make online I have my reputation in the back of my mind. From what I say to what I share, I want to make sure I don’t do or say anything that will ruin my reputation. I’m big on integrity :).

Those are some of the questions I ask myself too but I’ve learned not to focus on the what if’s because that will only hold me back from reaching my goals. When I make a mistake I take note, learn from it and move on. I don’t want it to scare me into trying again so I try not to ponder on it for too long.

Being flexivble is very important and it’s a challenge for me personally having to adapt suddenly to change…but we have to roll with the punches because there is always something changing. I learned that the hard way :).

I can’t say I have a formula to adapt to change. Before I would hesitate but now I embrace what I need to do learn from others who are doing the same thing and not worry about the what if’s. Like you said, just grow with it. 🙂

Good luck with your new site, I’m sure it’s going to be a hit!

    Hi Donna,

I think a lot has to do with mindset and perhaps this can prove to be even more difficult once you get to the transition stages and start hanging out with the ‘big boys’, so to speak. If we don’t think enough of ourselves then we never will be enough and we will find it difficult to push forwards. That’s not to suggest that we should be big-headed or think that we’re something we’re not, but we have to have a genuine belief and this starts with our mindset.

I often relate my experience of learning to play the guitar. I remember at the beginning when people learned that I played I would kind of justify myself by saying that I was “still only learning”. I can’t actually recall the transition point where I stopped considering myself “only learning” and actually started calling myself a guitarist.

It’s the same with anything really. Sure, we may not be at a certain level of perceived greatness or expertise, but we should get into the habit of viewing ourselves as what we want to be. After all, we are always going to be learning so instead of waiting for some kind of transition point, why not start as we mean to go on and view ourselves as what we want to be? It doesn’t matter if we don’t even announce that to the world, but it’s how we perceive ourselves that’s important and it’s this that will help us to grow.

I wish you all the best with your new blog, I can’t wait to see it when it’s up, running and in full swing! I know you’ll do great, of course! 😉

      Hi Glenn,

Thank you for sharing so much value to this post by your wonderful comment. I like your analogy of playing the guitar. Indeed, it all starts in our mindset!

Yes, it is how we perceive ourselves. I like when you mentioned that we may not be at a certain level of perceived greatness or expertise, but we should get into the habit of viewing ourselves as What We Want To Be! Oh my, how many times have I used visualization and self talk for that!

We have to get over that hump if we do not perceive ourselves in our unique greatness. There are so many ways to get there by books, coaching, etc. But, if we acknowledge that problem, we do need to face it and find a way to get over it.

It is our responsibility to keep working with our mindset and empower ourselves constantly as we grow. If not, we will be stagnated.

Thanks so much for explaining this to my readers,

    Hi Donna,

Sorry for being a little late this time – busy with a family wedding, so taking out a little time to be here now 🙂

Informative post, as always, with lots for all of us to learn from. You are right, change is constant, and as long as you keep changing and growing for the better – you are progressing. However, not everyone believes in it, though I wish they would as that’s the only way you create something special – your online reputation depends a lot on it too.

I know we’ve changed a LOT in these past four years, and so has your blog, and there is lots more in the pipeline for us, and you too. So, such progress only makes you and your life better I feel, though it should all be done without stressing yourself too much, or it can get very overwhelming, isn’t it?

You know I am already ‘in’ your BUZZZ blog and I love that tag line too! Wishing you the best for it 🙂

Yes, change is constant…a part of life and if we understand that, we grow as people and it will become easier to grow our business.

You sure have changed a lot in these past four years with your blog and it is one of the most powerful blogs out there! As I change too with my business, it does make me feel great. I must admit there are times where stress builds up, but I self-talk my way out of that because stress is an emotion and it is important to make the decision to not let it over take you.

So glad you are on the list for the BUZZ…The tagline says it all. It will only take 15 minutes of someone’s time to see an interview of people who have created a product, became an influencer, etc.

I have learned so much since I first started online with my business and I have had to learn to adapt and to make changes to evolve and continue to grow my business. You are right on the money when you said: As your business grows, you need to be ready to grow with it. Growth, consistency, being willing to adapt and make necessary changes is all a part of building your online business. Thanks for all the wisdom you shared in this post!

      Hi Shelley,

You’ve been there so you know how important it is to grow with your business. The most important thing is to be willing to adapt to changes. This could be difficult to do, but as long as we are aware of what can come, the adaptation part will be easy.

We always have to be prepared for growth, and have our back door plan in place just in case. Otherwise, we can be overwhelmed with it.

I have an entire list of contacts for those just in case moments where I need someone to pick up the slack.

Thanks for visiting and keeping me healthy!

    Hi Donna,

    Nice write up as usual.

As I learnt with the time, I can say that you have to be expert of the business you are doing because when you are online, you have global competition.

In an offline business you have competition in your area or limited to a geographic location but in online business there is no boundary.

I am also working hard to grow my online business gradually. Your tips will surely gonna help.

      Hi Atish,

When doing business online, we do have to keep up with the latest trends and learn how to adapt to them.

Creating a mindset of having a plan if things start to grow quickly, time management and just about everything else that can happen is important.

So true, with online businesses there is no boundary. And Yes, there is global competition, but one only needs a small piece of the pie to have a great business.

We joke at our firm that the growing pains we experience are good problems to have. And although that’s true, sometimes we aren’t prepared for the growth that we planned for, worked hard for, and then achieved.

      Hi Zach,

Indeed, growing pains are good problems to have. And yes, we sometimes are not prepared for them when they come, but we need to adapt to them right away. As long as we have that in our mindset, the process of adaptation won’t ruffle our feathers.

It always starts with our mindset. As long as we acknowledge change can come quickly, it is easier to roll with the punches.

Donna, I totally agree with you. Growing an online business is tough, but it can be made easier if you follow the tips you’ve outlined in this post.

However, it’s not always easy to be ready to grow with it! More hours will be worked, and your schedule will fill up quickly! It can be hard to juggle multiple clients, too.

Trust me, I know. My business has been growing for a while! 😉

The one thing that I’ve learned to do, however, is to be flexible and honest with my clients… and to extend the “deadlines” I impose upon myself.

      Hi Loraine,

It sure isn’t easy to be ready to grow with your business as it grows. This is where we need to pay attention to our time management skills.

How to have things set up to notify our clients when things can be done for them. So true, we need to be flexible and honest with our clients. As long as we are doing that, our reputation will precede us. And that is important 🙂

    Hi Donna!

Funny how things work out. Yes, as the business grows we must grow as people also. When I started blogging I would’ve never thought that I’d ever have to learn how to talk into a microphone, or edit video, or outsource projects, or start my own affiliate program, or learn copywriting, or any of the other million and one things I do today.

Those were all things I saw ‘the big boys’ doing but I never saw myself doing it. I am certainly not one of them yet but as my business has grown so has my skillset and that is continuing to expand on a daily basis.

Your advice on time is definitely something I should have considered earlier. I feel at this point like I’m expanding a bit too quickly. I have missed two consecutive weeks of episodes of my podcast. I haven’t had the time to get to leave as many blog comments as I’d like to. In all honesty I may suspend the podcast completely until I have more time to dedicate to it because I just have so much going on, and while it’s certainly been great at bringing new people to the site, overall it provides the least return for time invested. I know it’s worth it to continue, but perhaps that time isn’t right now.

In the end we’ve got to keep up with the growth of our business. As you said, we need to be ready to grow with it and if we can’t, perhaps its best to slow it down.

I’m looking forward to Donna Merrill Buzz. I know it’s going to be an exciting project for both you as the blogger and us as the readers as well, I can’t wait!

      Hi James,

It is funny how we grow. I too felt the same way when I first started blogging. I could never imagine in my wildest dreams that I would be a product creator. And as things grow and change, I too have to adapt.

Internet business changes very quickly and we need to be informed of the latest and greatest tools we need to execute our business. It is all in the growing process.

I do believe we all have it in us, but we have to realize it, make the decision and go. Just like when we took our first steps walking, then mastered running, we do have the adaptation within us.
Once we realize that, we hunger to grow more with our business.

Now take you for example, you are growing in leaps and bounds, and need to put the podcast aside and take the direction whereby business is taking you. No problem. We cannot be everywhere at the same time.

Sometimes we have to put something on the shelf and bring it back later on. But this is where out time management comes into play. You may not have the time to answer all the blog posts, or do your podcasts, but your business is growing fast and that is where you need to put your focus on.

Then, play catch up on other things. Yes…sometimes we do have to slow things down. It is all about us being productive and we cannot do that if we are overwhelmed.

Good to know you are looking forward to Donna Merrill Buzz. You will know when the doors are open!

    Hi Donna,

I absolutely love the twists and turns, and I sense you enjoy the journey as well? It may not be easy and at moments it is trying, but in the end watching unfold in front of our very eyes is the essence of joy as it moves from one stage to the next.

I love his paragraph in your article:

“You will have to adapt to failure, adapt to sudden changes, adapt to business models and web platforms you depended on going awry, changing their rules or just shutting down.

It reminds me of the Marine Corps’ saying; Adapt, improvise and overcome…

It’s the only way to victory in an ever changing world that doesn’t care about where you were but instead about where you are at and where you are going as you focus on the needs of those you serve.

I recently watched a video with Seth Godin and he said in it that he believes we are in the golden age of target marketing. Meaning, as the internet evolves and changes it is likely to get harder to target an audience amongst the massive growth in content marketing that will occur over the coming years.

That has implications for our online businesses, does it not?

    Exciting times are ahead Donna.

I hope you have an incredible week!

      Hi Don,

Thanks for your awesome input. I like the way you said that it reminds you of the Marine Corps’ saying; Adapt, improvise and overcome… There is so much truth to that if we want to survive!

Our business must survive so we must adapt to the many changes that come so quickly when we are online.

Indeed, I do agree with Seth Godin when he says that we are in the golden age of target marketing. The internet changes come so quickly and we, as business owners need to be ready for what is to come.

      Enjoy your week!

    Hi Donna,

I really enjoyed reading your post today. Good advice to everyone. I am looking forward to your new blog and following along with it.

Most of the time I think I adapt to change pretty well unless it’s a technical problem that messes up my day, then I am all off kilter for the day but working on that too.

    Have a great week.

Oh those technical problems, when they do come up, it is a bit nerve wracking, but once we master it we go with the flow of change.

I thing we all need to be prepared for the good “what ifs” in our business. Considering our time management and so on.

Oh yes, I’m looking forward to my new blog as well. Working out the kinks, but it will be so much fun to get to know about what is the latest Buzz in town.

Love this post Donna, especially when you get to the part about hanging out with the big boys, at this point people will tell you have changed, and they make it sound such a negative thing. What you’ve done is grown, when they’ve stayed the same. It’s not a capital offence to grow, your mind and soul craves it x

    Hey Donna,

Such sound advice my friend and I couldn’t agree with you more.

I only wish I knew a quarter of what I know now when I first started. That reputation that you’re talking about, those “gurus” I learned from way back when have disappeared now. Most of them were going about this the wrong way and I always knew it would catch up with them. I think there are just too many people wanting the easy way out so they go about it in dishonest ways and not only rip people off but hurt their reputation. It’s hard to come back from that when you’ve treated people so poorly.

Growing a business that will last with time isn’t an easy process but it’s one worth the effort. You have to decide what you want to do, learn from those already doing it, research what your competition is going, all things you’ve just shared here with us. Why? Because that’s how it’s done.

I love when you said that one day you’ll get to play with the big boys but they’re just people too. That’s right, we put so many people on some type of pedestal but when you have that initial conversation with the majority of them, they started at the same place we did.

Really great share today Donna, wise words indeed. Looking forward to where you’re headed this year and excited about your new site. I know it will be jam packed with great stuff. Happy to be your first. 😉

    You have a great day.

      Hi Adrienne,

David and I were just chatting this morning about the “gurus” when we first started and how many of them are not here anymore. Yes, some have blundered, but instead of saying sorry guys..here’s your money back, they disappeared. We came in around the same time and I’m laughing to myself about it lol.

Reputation is everything! We do have to stand by what we are doing and if something happens, all we need to do is say “hey guys I screwed up” – Here’s the replay..or whatever to have our reputation precede us. Plus never ever say anything negative…but you know that!

Yes, those big boys are people just like you and I. I have spoken to a few of them and they are just lovely people. They are busy, but I haven’t come across one yet that has not been egotistical

Looking forward to our chatting and putting it up on my new site.

    Hi Donna,

Last week I clicked on one of your links and noticed that new blog of yours. Very cool and I wish you lots and lots of success with it.

Yes, change is inevitable, but as you said change is part of growth. If we didn’t learn how to adapt to change we would still be traveling on horses and chariots 🙂 so, change is good.

I’ve recently changed some things around on my blog by taking out my free eBook and my services on the blog sidebar, just leaving the services minus the eBook on the homepage.

Soon I’ll have a couple of brand new widgets that will be more general as we discussed with my coach that what I had might have been too confusing for my first time visitors, and more important those that would be potential clients.

This is very good advice you gave to marketers that are still learning to grow their business. Great job as always.

    Have a wonderful week!

I’m still tinkering around to make sure everything is working properly.

He He I like your analogy of change. I could just picture us riding around with chariots and horses..yes change is good.

I think you made a good decision by taking down the free ebook and going with your services on your side bar. I find that when offering something free..we get people that only want free stuff. Slap a price on that ebook no matter how low. People that pay for information will use it and act upon it, rather than have it somewhere on their computer.

Great advice as always Donna. A couple of your point particular ring true for my early online experience. Not being the techie type (and that is an understatement!) I made more than a few blunders with my first blog and – as much as I dreaded the response – because you know I’m a recovering control freak/perfectionist – I went out to my subscribers with an apology and just admitted I was struggling through a learning curve. I was stunned with the overwhelmingly supportive response! That was an important lesson for me and I’ve worked to remain transparent to my community ever since.

The other thing is your point about properly calculating the amount of time it will take to deliver a product or service. That was another learning curve, but it’s one of those lessons that you either learn early on or it will completely overwhelm you. Thanks for the tips and inspiration!

      Hi Marquita,

Thank you for sharing your experience here. With your blog, of course, a simple email to all your subscribers works. People do understand when things go wrong, as long as we tell them.

That support you received sure was a good lesson to remain transparent!

Indeed, one must calculate their time when delivering a product and/or service. I sure can overwhen you if you are not ready for it.
