The 20 Percent Solution

This post was most recently updated on July 31st, 2016

https://www.donnamerrilltribe.comWhat is the 20 percent solution to finishing the big project that’s still sitting on your desktop?

After many years of consulting with people both online and offline as to accomplishing their goals, I’ve pretty much come to this conclusion…

The average client I work with (call her “Kathy”) does a really great job of completing about 80 percent of a big project, or accomplishes 80 percent of each major goal she works toward.

Then, somehow, the remaining 20 percent just never happens.

But Kathy doesn’t just stop doing business.

She moves on to a new project, something far more promising and likely to succeed.

She gets on a training, fills her notebook with notes and charts and figures and projections.

Then she opens a new document and starts working on “Project B.”

Things go great, and she puts her heart and soul into it.

Of course, you can guess where this is going.

Once Kathy gets about 80 percent of Project B done, she gets interested in starting “Project C” instead.

“Project C” looks like it will be easier to market and end up earning a lot more profit.

Special: Achieve Your Goal In The Next 60 Days

This pattern continues.

Today, Kathy has 6 pr 7 projects on her desktop that are 80 percent complete, but she’s never figured out the solution… the 20 percent solution to completing any one of them.

Now, Kathy is my average client.

The Extraordinary Entrepreneur

I’ve certainly had some extraordinary clients, too.

They are the ones who actually complete their big project, reach their big goal and then go on to the next… and the next… and the next.

The extraordinary clients I’ve worked with have figured out the 20 percent solution, and have mastered the knack for planning a goal, and reaching it.

They do that by plotting milestone projects in sequence, and completing their “Project A” before moving onto “Project B.” After they complete “Project B” they move on to “Project C.”

Let’s say that “Nadia” is one of my extraordinary clients.

Why does Nadia succeed at what Kathy continually fails at?

The 20 Percent Solution

Kathy is never sure of herself.

She second guesses everything she does and somewhere deep inside believes she can’t really accomplish the goals she sets for herself.

Nadia knows she can do it.

She doesn’t hope she can, she simply expects to, and so she does.

Even though Kathy always gets off to a great start, she’s always looking around at other things to get involved in “just in case” Project A fails.

The truth is, she’s telling herself on a subconscious level, that there’s no way she can complete Project A, and if she actually does, there’s no way that she’ll be able to market it and make it profitable.

So as she nears the end of it, here self doubt increases along with her fear of the inevitable failure looming.

In her near panic, she starts looking for something “better.”

Special: Achieve Your Goal In The Next 60 Days

At this same point in the process, Nadia is realizing that it’s going to take some special effort to complete the final 20 percent of her project.

Nadia understands that the first 80 percent is far easier to accomplish than the final 20 percent.

That’s because the final 20 percent raises so many more emotional as well as strategic concerns.

You see, when Kathy gets to the final 20 percent of her project, the emotional doubts and fears freeze her progress. She also realizes she has no real strategy for making the most of a completed project.

So it becomes much more comfortable for Kathy to abandon the project and work on something new. That’s because working through the first 80 percent of a new project make Kathy feel like she’s keeping busy without accepting post-production challenges.

Nadia knows that post-production, she will have to figure out exactly how to move her newly completed project forward.

But she’s more able to do this than Kathy was because she had a post-production marketing strategy in place before she ever started the project.

Kathy never did, partly because she somehow knew she’d never get to that point.

Nadia also struggles with the emotional aspects of completing the final 20 percent, but she has the self confidence and resolve to give that big push at the end of the project.

She knew it would get to this point, she’s ready to take it on, and she does.

Special: Achieve Your Goal In The Next 60 Days

How do you tackle the final stages of completing a big project or accomplishing a big goal?

Are you more like Kathy or more like Nadia?

Have you found your own 20 percent solution?

I’d love to hear about it.

    Hi Rachel,

Yippie! I like your attitude! Yes, there will be “failures” but I like to call them “failing forward” because every time we fail, or make a mistake..it is costly to us and we never repeat it again.

It is all about learning every day to move forward and as long as you have the attitude you have, there is no doubt in my mind that you will achieve the success you want.

    Great post Donna.

I can now say I am more like Nadia, than Kathy. In fact I used to be wonderful at getting organised, writing lists, researching and then something would come up and I would start the same process all over again.

Now I am Nadia, I follow through, there is still a little doubt left over from bad habits, but I refuse it point blank now not to plan and succeed. I am aware there will be things along the path that will slow me down, change my direction and I may even fail along the way. But i will get up brush myself off and continue with my very calculated plan. Me and Nadia have a lot in common. Great food for thought.

    Hi Donna…

I know what you mean about these two examples.. I’ve found being accountable to a group of people keeps you going. Even having someone to check in with on a regular basis. When this happens to me, I take a break, a day or so, and then finis. Usually I haven’t completed the project in my mind and still needs to be worked out.. so I just go with the creative flow … 🙂

Great post, I would suspect more us than would care to omit complete the 80% of the project. As it takes 20% of the effort to do 80% 🙂

I maintain my to do list in order of prioritization as I know I will do the 80% and if I don’t drive myself back to the 20% it will sit there. Now somethings just need to sit there for a while, but on the whole they all need to get to the 100% or close anyway!

    Hi Donna.

    Great post here.

I use to be this way about business opportunities and I would jump from one to another if they seemed promising..but I learned. And the best way I conquer that now is putting my butt in the chair until the job gets done.

Doing it Kathys way is a never ending headache. .that seems obvious what the solution is…but it’s to actually act on it.

    Great post.

Hi Donna, I sure needed this today. We all have those great intentions to get these jobs done and they just don’t always happen. We are going to have to take the Nadia approach and just push through. It is funny how we tend to repeat those unproductive habits instead of pushing through. Thanks for this reminder to finish and complete our projects so that we can move forward toward our dreams. Great post.

      Hi BG,

Good to know this was a good reminder for you. Most people don’t finish what they started for so many reasons.

When we repeat unproductive habits, it is a “red flag” that we need to look inside ourselves and find out why. It can be done by list writing or getting someone to help out. It can be something deep in the subconscious mind. Who knows? Everyone is different.

But as long as you have acknowledged this, that is the first step and you are on your way!

Oh my… I know exactly what you mean! When I created my course, I had hit many bumps like Dr. Erica and it certainly makes you wonder if it’s all worth it. Thankfully I had an instructional designer to work with and she was my cheerleader through the whole process. She held me accountable every step of the way. I think that’s really important to have a coach of some sort to help.

I’m positive you’re helping SO many however it’s really up to each individual push through.

    Hi Donna

Ouch 🙂 I do recognize the Kathy in me (and I’m working on it). To be honest it’s usually a technical challenge that stops me in my tracks.

I have also done a bit of own-business-analysis and realized that the main reason I have abandoned previous projects is lack of traffic. So given that as a common feature for failure, it makes sense for me to learn to address that before anything else.

I’m partly doing that by working in a team for my latest business, and also by checking out tools to help me with the aspect that is the common reason for past failures.

Sometimes it’s been very tempting to just quit but I will say that I have learned something from my previous failures, and taken those lessons on board as I moved on.

Life has been difficult this past year and I have a slimmed down portfolio now because I also realized I was just spreading myself too thin.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, Joy

      Hi Joy,

Well you are half way there. You have acknowledged those “failures” and that is the best teacher we have. We all go through this, even if some never admit it lol.

I cannot tell you how many failures I have had along the way. But each one was an important lesson.

I know darn well when it comes to technology I have to hire someone to do that part for me. Right now, after a year, I’ve realized no matter how hard I try doing a sales page, it is a weak point, ergo I had to hire a person to do it for me.

Now the “testing” begins. Who is buying what and why. An ongoing task and it makes me feel like I’m a mad scientist in my office he he he.

All the best to you on this journey,

    Hey Donna,

I’m actually on the other end. I feel like I have so many projects I want to do that I feel almost like an octopus on roller-skates LOL

But I definitely need to take my time and work on one at a time! I never thought about having a post-production marketing strategy and I think it’s a great idea of putting one together. Especially for the fact if you’re not feeling to confident about the product. At least you’ll have a legit backup plan just in case things go sour.

Besides that, I usually finish the products I take on. It does help to have a team also. My old boss use to nudge me about some products, but usually I was good to finish them. I will always look forward to the experience to learn from which gave me an energy boost!

Great post Donna! I hope your enjoying the weekend!

Oh the octopus on roller-skates has me laughing because I know that feeling so well. We need to be our own boss. Get done one project at a time…finish it all the way through on a timely basis.

My boss is my white board lol. I have so many things I want to do, I just put it on there for later.

The magic trick is to plan a blueprint. Figure out the time necessary to accomplish a task. Also leave some flex-time because life happens and we are not robots. When done like this, we can get a better idea of the real time it will take us.

Then break it down. A year – month – day – week – hour; no matter how you deem to do it. Once done, it feels so great. Then the next time it becomes easier.

Donna you have totally nailed this challenge, especially for us creatives, who just LOVE starting projects but ending them is sort of boring there are many more brighter shining things to explore and get involved in.

What I find works is having a plan, because than I don’t have to think it is the thinking that makes me want to jump ship.

I also go back to my vision board and see what is exciting about this project and how it is moving me closer to the Life I choose to live, and how it will help me make a difference with the people I want to make a difference with.

That constantly staying in touch wit the creative aspect of the project is really important to me.

And I still don’t make it work all the time, especially if mentors or friends intervene with a new joint project. Then my brain has the perfect excuse to abandon ship part way through the voyage!

It can be frustrating as I see in the many comments above!

      Hi Mary,

Oh I know quite well the place you are in. There is always something! But setting your goal, taking a project and seeing it through by strategizing it to a daily basis can help. I have to put my blinders on every day because tons of my friends have incredible things I want to be part of.

But, I have to bow out until I finish what I intend to do. That blue print of mine is pretty long, but when I break it down to months, weeks, days and hours it keeps me on track.

      Never abandon the ship!

    Hi Donna,

I can definitely relate to Kathy. I have been there, done that myself. The mind is a strong force and when there are thoughts of self doubt, it can really paralyze us from ever completing a project 100%, much less achieve a goal. It stopped me dead in my tracks when I published my eBook. Now I have a product that’s sitting there and I’m not doing anything with it.

I wish to be more like Nadia and have the self confidence and resolve. I have it in here somewhere, I just need to bring her out :). I was actually meditating on this and the thought that always came back to me was the material. That, maybe on some unconscious level, I’m not happy with the material I’ve presented in the eBook. And if I’m not proud of my product who else will be, right?

So, I need to work on this. For starters, I need to go back and re-read my eBook and see how I can improve it. Then I need to learn how to present it. I think your Achieve Your Goal program is just what I’m looking for. I was watching your video and the first question you said “how do these people do it” is my all-time burning question.

Great post as always Donna! I hope you’re having a great day!

      Hi Cori,

From what you have written here, you already have a plan. Going back and tweaking that book. Then comes the marketing part…that’s an area you might want to learn so that you can market well.

How do people do it? They fail forward. Not everyone will tell all, but I like to. I have products up and they are doing so-so. Mentors have told me the product itself rocks, but my sales page stinks.

David and I tweaked and tweaked, but to no avail. Now we have to hire a professional to do our sales page. Am I giving up? Not a chance! I found our weakness and no matter how we tried, we came to the realization that we have to farm out that piece of the puzzle.

So you see…one product or ebook won’t cut it. You have to do a few before you gain any traction.

      Enjoy your weekend,

I would say to try to get in a habit of finishing a goal, and then you can always go back and tweak things.

    Hey Donna,

You know what I like most about this post? The simple and straightforward truth in it!

It’s no news the fact that most people enjoy starting a project and fail finishing it. It’s only a focused fellow that can see juicy offers and throw away the ones already on table. In most cases, these offers may look good and big enough to grab, but still the small percentage of the project determines how best you are at what you do.

I love this article Donna, as simple as it sounded, there are lots of lessons to learn from the actions of the two folks Katty and Nadia mentioned in the article. This will be thought changer for most entrepreneurs!

Thanks once again for a wonderful write up Donna. Do have a wonderful weekend ahead my friend 🙂

I see too many people that are so talented and have so much to give to the world and they come to a screeching halt by the time their project is almost finished. Is it procrastination? Fear? Whatever it is, if someone finds themselves doing this…they sure need to self examine themselves and find out why.

    Hi Jasper,

I don’t think it is spooky at all! When it comes to the subconscious mind and hypnotism, NLP, and all that, if a person really doesn’t want to change they won’t.

I am very big on these things because there is only so much the conscious mind can do. There are those “critics” in our head….the negative voices. When acknowledged, we can spot that red flag and do some self talk. Problem is, most times it is not acknowledged. (sigh)

Our mindset is everything. Keeping it focused and clear by any means possible is imperative in order to do just about anything.

I just love improving my mind!

There is both a Katy and a Nadia within me, LOL.

What i mean is that i constantly need to remind myself that to crush through mental blocks.

The persistent Nadia within me is starting to win most off the time now 😉

It’s so easy to do busywork, but that’s NEVER going to be life changing.

Telling yourself bad things at a subsonscious level will definitely assure you won’t get that last 20% done.

Just bringing consciousness to the fact that you are in fact procrascinating helps a lot for me personally.

That’s why an article like this is so powerful.

      Hi Jasper,

Welcome! I’m so happy that you liked this article. You said it…it is easier to do that busy work, but it will never change your life. Sometimes we have to take a deep look at ourselves and wonder why we hide behind this.

Procrastination encompasses many different things that may be in our subconscious mind. But once we do address the issue..it is the first step towards moving forward. We have to take inventory on ourselves from time to time when the red flag of procrastination comes up in our behavior.

If we cannot soul search effectively, it is time to go to a third party to do so. I do it all the time 🙂

When I realize I’m not moving forward…that 20% is lacking, I will do a self check up. But if it doesn’t work my choice of a quick fix is hypnotism or rapid eye movement therapy. I get all crazy with my self if I cannot keep moving. So, for me personally, this works.

There are many ways to get over the hump. I have to battle that all the time myself. I find writing things down and putting my blinders on to complete a goal within a certain amount of time beneficial.

      In the end..it feels great!

        Donna,

Thanks a lot for your warm welcome on your blog and for visiting my blog, too!

I just wanted to say i absolutely agree on your comments on procrastination, and like you i’ve also found great positive effects from hypnotism.

People think it sounds spooky, but i love listening to Paul Mc Kenna and soak in positive suggestions before sleeping 🙂 Learning NLP has also been a lot of fun and i love Richard Bandler.

I believe having some tools to mold your mind and is super important. You can’t change the actions you have to take, but you can change your perspective on taking them. Thats your choice, your personal freedom.

Even with a lot of mindset work, we still get caught in lower ways of thinking sometimes so we have to stay alert.

When you have finished that 20% it’s certainly a victory. I have yet to read a book called “What makes your brain happy, and why you should do the opposite”, but i have the feeling that you and i know what it is about.

Thanks a lot for connecting Donna!

Hi Donna. Great post, I’m sure it resonates with many people. It does fit me in a way too. However, I don’t find myself moving on to other projects because I lack the confidence to complete them or think something else is easier. There are just so darn many things i want to do and get excited about, i find I often times have several balls in the air at once. And yes, they are at about 80%. 🙂 my problem is lack of time in the day. Wish I could fix that.

      Hi Susan,

You are one passionate person and I could see how you can have several balls in the air at once. But if you find yourself in that 80% place and lack time….of course you can fix that.

I would say time management is something to work on. Create a list…stick to one thing at a time and then check it off. (that feels so good)

I know the feeling of only having 24 hours in a day, but we can only do so much. Organizing our time with a plan can get you over that hump.

I read this as soon as it was published but guess what? I realized that there was a project that I’d not totally finished promotion wise. So i went off to do some more on it straight away. So thank you for this very timely reminder.

I’m really trying to focus and not get involved in too many things at a time but it’s takes a while to change habits. I also reckon confidence comes in to it. “If I spend time on this, will it be well received, will it be good enough….?”

      Hi Sue,

Good to know that after reading this you went off to finish your project promotion wise.

I would say never go there: Will it be good enough? For who? You have a lot of knowledge to share and I am sure that yes..it is good enough for those who ned it.

That’s the problem sometimes, we get caught up in if it’s good enough. That only leads to procrastination. Yes, we have to go over things dot our i’s and cross our t’s but there is a point whereby we just have to put it out there.

One of my mentors that looks over my work tells me it’s fine..just do it. Keep on doing it and create that habit. Eventually something “sticks” and that my friend is what we run with.

Donna, the emotional aspect is sometimes really hard to get over. I think that’s why it took me so long to “come clean” about my past.

I also think it’s why it’s taking me FOREVER to finish my book, Letters to Julian.

      Hi Lorraine,

I just read your recent post and I have to tell you that I was so impressed by it. That post could have easily been an ebook! I just have to give you my heads up on that.

Indeed, the emotional aspect is always a struggle. When you came clean about your past, it was the most inspiring read. If you can do all that, what the heck should we complain about. But we all have something that we have overcome. If not, we cannot go forward as you well know.

As for your book, I am sure you will finish it in its own time. And when you do I am sure it won’t be a flimsy ebook like the many out there, but one that will be a “best seller”

    Wow, Donna!

Do you have a secret camera installed in my house somewhere? Are you looking over my shoulder right now? I have to hold my hands up and admit to being a bit of a ‘Kathy’ at times!

This is something that I have battled with for a long time. I think the reason, at least for me, is that I like the novelty factor when something is nice and new. But when something newer comes along then that holds more appeal and the previous thing(s) can be pushed to one side and it can be hard to complete them.

I can relate this to video games. Not everyone is into them, but I am and I know that if I’m in the middle of a particular adventure then I shouldn’t buy a new one, because as soon as I start that one then it’s that one that’ll hold my attention and I’ll find it hard to go back and pick up the old one from where I left off.

In fact, it’s the same with books. If I am reading a book it’s fatal for me to start another one, because the old one will get pushed aside.

Something else that this happens with it – yep, online purchases, such as e-books, courses, etc. Just like so many others, I have been guilty over the years of buying something and not completing it before buying something else.

So, when it comes to projects, I try to focus on completing one thing before moving on to the next. Otherwise I know that it will take me ridiculously longer to complete anything. From time to time I still find myself guilty of the 80% complete scenario in everything, but at least with personal projects I am pretty good now at sticking with the one thing. For any new ideas I get, instead of making a start, I just make sure that I write stuff down. If I get further ideas on that project then I’ll add to the ideas list, but I’ll resist the temptation to get to work on it.

For me, it’s just a case of being strict with myself and saying “No, I am not moving on to that until I have completed this”. I don’t always listen to myself, but I am much better these days. Maybe I listen to myself 80% of the time…… 😉

      Hi Glenn,

Thanks for your candid response and I know my readers will resonate with you. Yes, just like a book, I too cannot start another because when I do, I never finish the first one. Great analogy!

I too, have many trainings that I never finished, things I purchased and never opened up. But then I realized what the heck am I doing?

We all have different ways of disciplining ourselves. I use a white board because I do work with my husband. We have a goal, he does his part, I do mine. But each and every day, we do the task at hand FIRST.

Sometimes I get the nagging feeling in my head that I have to get over to my blog, or social media, but I stop and won’t go there when I am working on a project.

Once we break things down and put our blinders on, there will be no distractions. When the daily task is finished, it is like a load off my back. Then I can visit my blog and others…go on social media, or just take a walk on the beach.

      Thanks again!

I wish I am like Ikechi who always finished a project 100% because of the goals he had before even starting to work on it, or Nadia.

Thanks for your advice, I am encouraged to do better in my professional life and be more productive by not just starting a task, but actually getting them done and finished with a bang!

That is why I created the training because I see too many people that have wonderful gifts to give to the world but stop at that 20%. Fear? Anxiety? whatever it is, we have to look closely at ourselves and be honest what is stopping us.

    Hey Donna,

I’m pretty sure there are a LOT of Kathy’s out there, all excited about their projects and eager to get them done. We never seem to have an issue when the work is easy right! It’s when we run into obstacles or hit a brick wall and are not quite sure how to get around those. For most people they’ll start another project thinking they’ll come back to that one at a later date when they have it all figured out.

This reminds me of my product I was creating and boy did I hit some walls. I was in tears but I knew I had to figure this out or in my case just get some darn help. I did so I would have to say I’m more like Nadia although I will confess and tell you that I’ve had my moments girl.

I think though that we all need to figure things out as we go along which is another great reason to build those relationships with other bloggers right! We’ll always have people to turn to when we need help moving through those obstacles or tearing down those brick walls that we don’t know who to do.

I would hate to see anyone start a project and just not finish it because of those reasons. If they want to learn though how to keep going they’ve come to the right person. Donna to the rescue, she’s always here to give us fabulous advice.

Have a great rest of your week my dear and thanks for this post.

      Hi Adrienne,

I too had hit so many brick walls when I did my first product. I sure was glad I hired someone to keep me on point. It was one of the biggest challenges in my life. I went through so much inner turmoil also and learned so much about myself.

Even though I did this with David, I still had many learning curves to do and in a timely basis. I felt like giving up many times with this challenge, but when you hire someone to coach you through, you have to be accountable and get every baby step toward the goal done on a timely basis.

It was my “boot camp” and now as I set up goals for production, it is on that white board of mine. If I don’t complete a daily task to finish to goal, I will stay up late and do whatever it takes.

Although it does get easier each time I bat out another training, it is hard work and takes discipline. You don’t know how many times I look out that window and know that beach is calling me, but I won’t go unless I do the most difficult task for the day.

Then I can put my feet in the sand…a great reward!

    Hello Donna,
This is really a very interesting post and I must admit that I’m also as guilty on this as Kathy.

I’ve also started a couple of projects that I was unable to complete not because of any other thing but because I found something else that I assumed was better and at the end of the day, I was unable to complete both projects.

I’ve resolved to always focus all my energy and attention at one project per time.

    Thanks for sharing

      Hi Theodore,

It is so easy to leave a project and jump to another. I too get tempted all the time. But when we are working on something putting all our energy into that project, if it is not completed, it not only hangs on our computer somewhere. More importantly that that, it does hang out in our subconscious mind.

Weather we realize it or not, it is that nagging feeling we get. We need to see a project all the way through, even if we think it is not of value. We can always tweak it and make it a gem!

    Hi Donna,

Wow, this is a very powerful post and its headline doesn’t give it justice that by the way 🙂

Truth be told I am still fighting the “Kathy” syndrome. I tend to be great starter and lousy finisher, I think that I even know where this is coming from, since I was the first person I ever coached 🙂 but no doubt this is still a challenge for me.

However, i’m learning and I’m getting better at it.

But you so nailed it when you said, and I quote “when Kathy gets to the final 20 percent of her project, the emotional doubts and fears freeze her progress. She also realizes she has no real strategy for making the most of a completed project.”

Gosh, that is so true and that so makes me want to write about this topic myself. I even had a discussion with a personal development coach who suffer of the Kathy syndrome too, but I’ve never thought about writing about it yet for some reasons. When I do, I promise I’ll like to your post as it’s the inspiration to what I have to said about this subject.

Great post Donna, and will share for sure.

I can see where you can be the one to write about this topic further. It goes hand in hand with your personal development niche. And I’m sure you will prompt people to move forward.

Sometimes that 20% is deep in the subconscious and you know so well all about that my friend. I find that when I get really stuck, and cannot do it alone, I have to bounce it off a third party. And as a self development coach yourself, you know how well that works.

    Hi Donna,

FANTASTIC post!!!! The 20% left undone syndrome… it’s an epidemic.

You really laid out the examples clearly and your so right; so many are telling themselves all kinds of stories that are sabotaging their efforts and keeping them from finishing any single project.

I was just thinking of former web design clients that couldn’t seem to cross the line and finish the project and the reasons were the exact same as you mentioned.

    Fear, worry, concern…

It’s the very reason so many never lack the clarity they need in order to be successful so that they can create the right strategies and execute the goals.

There are even times I find myself coming up to that 80% line when I’m not confident about doing something that I know makes sense. Fortunately, through my military experience I was trained to push past the hesitation to implementation and execution.

I guess that’s why I can get so much stuff done and experiment with so many new ideas.

I really appreciate your article Donna. What a HOME RUN!!!

I hope tens of thousands read your article and take massive action.

    Have an awesome week.

      Hi Don,

Yes, this is something that needs to be addressed. I do find so many people completing that 80% but never finishing the job. When you think of it all that hard work they put into a project and then let it go due to whatever.

Discipline is something that is lacking with many folks. You have military experience so that is something that can get you doing a job well done and in a short time. You have the clarity and push forward.

I once read that to be good in business one must join the military or go to church. It was from the book “Rich Woman” That really got to me and as I searched within myself I realized I lacked discipline. So I went back to church…every Sunday and not just when I felt like it.

After a while, discipline was born. That is something one must find in any shape or form to carry out that 20%

Thanks so much for your support.

        Donna,

I have 2 computers, a desktop and a laptop. I also have an ipad.

I attempted to do the videos on my desktop but the fan keeps blowing and makes too much noise. So — I create the power points on the desktop, use a flash drive to transfer the power points to the laptop, and then create the videos on the laptop. That was fine until the laptop kept crashing in the middle of the videos. I stopped to spend a day on the phone with Kaspersky. Cleared any malware, if there was any, but the problem was worse afterwards. But then I restored the computer to an earlier time and – it worked again.

If necessary, I would have taken my power points and created new power points in the ipad. My power points do not fit easily into the Apple equivalent of power point., So I would have to re-do all 30 power points. Hopefully I can complete all the videos and not have to do that.

And I thought I was being extravagant when I purchased the ipad. Turns out we need several computers when doing anything serious online.

          Oh my gosh Erica!

Sorry for all that is going on..but technology sometimes just drives us up the wall lol. Transferring data is difficult no matter what we do.

I see you have your equipment all in place, but it really goes to show that we do need several computers if we are going to do anything serious online.

Things like this happened to me so many times. Once, when I uploaded something my computer almost crashed, I quickly went to the Apple store and purchased another laptop. I love working on mac and David on pc. Together, we can send each other stuff and work on it.

Best to you Erica so you don’t have to re-do all your stuff again.

    Donna,

Boy this post came to me at just the right moment thanks to Sue Bride sharing it.

I am right smack in the middle of my 30 Day Love Challenge. All the power points were ready before the course began but many need more images. And I have been creating the videos for each power point, a few at a time, while the course is going. I was going along fine, 2 videos each day (to get ahead) and then … crash. My computer kept crashing shortly after I started recording the video. So I contacted Kaspersky to help in case there was malware.

Now, after 16 videos are completed, the task is becoming more difficult. It has started feeling more like a task than the joy I felt at first, partly because I know how long each piece takes and the fact that I’ve been up until 2 AM completing them almost every day.

So for me it is not even at the 80% point that I might stop, it is at a little past 50%. But since this course is already going and people are relying on me, and enjoying and benefiting from what I am presenting, I WILL push through my resistance and complete the project.

Your explanation of why we might not complete it is so true – not knowing what we will do after the project is completed. But that doesn’t matter. Just get the projects completed and you gather up an arsenal of products to offer.

Thanks for a great and well thought out post.

    Warmly,

    Dr. Erica

      Hi Erica,

Yikes! Sorry to hear that your computer crashed. It is difficult to do those power point presentations and videos…I can feel you because that’s exactly how I do my products also.

I have 4 computers in my home. 2 macs and 2 pc’s. If one fails, the other can pick up the motion. Maybe it is time to invest in another computer for back up when you are doing these 30 day events?

All the power points and videos I do I keep on an external drive and on the “cloud” somewhere so I don’t loose them if my computer crashes. Maybe an external hard drive would do the trick?

There are so many things that do go wrong in the middle of a project. I like to look at it like a budget. We write down what money has to go where, but put in the miscellaneous part lol. Just like what is going on now with you.

I’m sure no matter what, you will get through because people are depending on you and you are a professional person. Even if you had to skip a day due to your computer, people will understand.

      Best to you,

      -Donna

Great treatment of this important topic Donna! Having worked as a life and small business coach for over a decade I can certainly recall many “Kathy’s” along the way. They do all the ground work and get ready to actually start doing something with the business they so desperately wanted only to suddenly shift gears and try a ‘new’ opportunity or set a new goal.

I do believe there are other defining elements in this process, and that’s being truly passionate and committed to the goal in the first place. Sometimes we start a thing because it sounds good, or because we allow others to influence us so it seems like something we ‘should’ do, and sometimes priorities change along the way. That’s where it helps to work with someone such as yourself to clear away the cobwebs and find a way to move forward. Thanks for the inspiration!

      Hi Marquita,

Finding our passion about what we set out to do is one of the key factors that will keep us going and finish a set goal.

Indeed, there are some things people start because it sounds good or as you wisely put it..”because we allow others to influence us so it seems like something we should do” Oh boy how many times have we seen that one!

This is why we have to be honest with ourselves at all costs. We must never allow those “shoulds” to be part of our mindset.

As we grow on our journey, there may be priorities that need change along the way. It happens to all of us as long as we are growing.

Thanks so much for your great comment,

    Hi Donna,

    Awesome post.

You are right, most of us are like Kathy but we ought to keep striving to be like Nadia.

For the Kathies in the house, I guess we need to have an accountability partner or a mentor of some sort or better still enroll for a program that could help solve this problem.

A good program would be the one that Donna herself is offering because truth be told we all need a good dose of focus and stick-to-it-tive-ness to achieve our goals.

    Thanks again Donna

      Hi Dan,

Thank you for your kind words! Indeed an accountability partner or mentor sure speeds up the process!

I use mentors all the time…people who have accomplished a certain thing that I need to learn from. I always say Learning is Earning!

We, as bloggers, product creators, marketers, always need to be on that learning curve.
