Are You Chasing Fast Money Or Building A Solid Business?

This post was most recently updated on July 31st, 2016

Chasing Money OR Building Business

There are so many bloggers trying to make money. The problem is that too many of them are just chasing fast money, and give little thought to building a solid business.

Lets take a look at these two ways that bloggers are doing business online, and compare the two.

Chasing Fast Money

The “chasing fast money” crowd is made up of people who hop from one opportunity or business model to another. Usually, over time, the “chasers” fizzle out.

It is like being on a merry go round reaching for the brass ring. Each time you go around you stretch your hand out to get the brass ring to win another ride. So where does that get you? ‘Round and ’round in circles.

Here are some examples of what people do to chase fast money.

One of the first things they do is to put up many things on their blog’s side bar. Then they sit back and wait for blog visitors to click and join an opportunity or buy a product.

This is a real long shot, though.

Even if they succeed in getting click to offers, what are the chances that someone will be serious enough to actually buy when they click to a sales page, or join an opportunity at first sight.

After all there are probably about ten different banners to click on these bloggers’ side bars.

What does that say about these bloggers?

They are chasing money.

Obviously.

Everything about this approach tells visitors not to expect much real value from the blog, just a lot of sales hype.

The “fast cash” blogger may grab a few commissions and sign-ups here and there, but she certainly is not building a great online business.

Another thing the “fast cash” crowd attempts, is making some easy profits on social media. A person PM’s you on Facebook or worse, tags you to the newest shiny object that just came on the market.

Now, how many people hanging out on Facebook are really going to open a link like that, not to mention take action on it?

If you made any commissions from that approach, I can pretty much guarantee you it won’t be a lot, and it certainly won’t become the basis for a strong, long-term business

Yet another approach is to chase after pennies by going to Twitter, Facebook and other social sites, and sharing links to their blog posts.

When someone clicks to the blog post, they find an “article” that is little more than a sales page. In fact, it is very often written directly from the sales page of some affiliate offer being promoted.

What does that say about these bloggers?

To most readers and prospects, it says that they are pretty desperate.

This is not a good way to brand yourself as a serious blogger.

One of the most short-sighted methods I’ve seen is the “donate button” technique.

This is when bloggers ask their readers to donate to their blog or business.

Now, I’m not here to diss anyone, but really… come on now.

Special: Achieve Your Goal In The Next 60 Days

Asking people to click a donate button on your site, only shows you are not a leader, but a beggar.

In my opinion (I know there are folks who disagree), putting a donate button on your blog makes you look like a street peddler waving a cup for passers-by to put change in.

If you want to give your content for free, as most blog posts do… just do it.

When it reaches a level of value that you can start selling it, then sell it.

That’s a serious, and scale-able business model.

How are you going to convince people that your content is valuable, if you can’t even put a price on it?

That’s not a business model at all, it’s just another way of chasing fast money, instant cash.

Yet another “fast cash” method is promoting an MLM (multi level marketing) or similar type of “business opportunity.”

Thees bloggers try to leverage their blogs into recruitment platforms for their business opportunity.

Very often, these folks jump from one network company to another before they ever make a dime!

They will shout out to the world how great a company or opportunity is, how wonderful the compensation plan is and all the rest.

A few people might actually join such an opportunity (“fast money” from the sign-up).

Shortly afterwards, though, these bloggers jump to something new that looks like it will be better and make them more money, faster.

Once they’ve signed on to the next opportunity, these fast money bloggers start telling their readers that the new company is now the best one.

This not only makes these bloggers look confused, but on a track for making fast money rather than building a business to help improve the lives of their readers.

Building A Solid Business

Now lets take a look at bloggers who are building a solid business.

Typically, they have these traits, and work hard to develop and enhance them.

Clarity: They have the clarity of what they want to accomplish.

Time: They know darn well it is going to take time and some monetary investment to start building a real business.

Learning is Earning: Those who are building a solid business always take a portion of their day to learn something new, and/or to improve themselves.

Goal achievement: This crowd realizes that success is a series of setting and attaining a series of goals. They spend a good portion of their time setting up the steps they know are necessary to achieve success.

Consistent Action: Once their clear goals and timelines are established, these bloggers get down to taking action.

Every single day they take a chunk of time to work on each of the steps they’ve mapped out for achievement, not worrying about when the money is going to roll in.

Special: Achieve Your Goal In The Next 60 Days

They don’t second guess every little thing they are doing. They just trust that if they stick to the process of building a business, the results they want will follow, sooner or later.

Process, Not Results: While “fast money” bloggers focus purely on results (how much money did I make today?), the “business bloggers” focus on consistently and diligently working the process that they have laid out for themselves.

Giving, Not Taking: White “fast money” bloggers are always “on the take,” “business bloggers” are always “on the give.”

Building a solid business is ALL about giving to others, fulfilling their needs, adding value to their lives and improving them.

This pertains to any business, not just blogging.

It also pertains to offline as well as online business.

Just think of the clothing industry for example.

Every season there are new and wonderful fashion trends.

Fashion marketers know this as they keep pushing out new styles each season.

They know darn well their target market and if they are targeting women, they know how to bribe them into tossing their old clothing, and purchasing the latest trend.

Sorry guys… I’m a fashion freak and had a lot of experience in that industry some time ago.

The point is this.

No matter what you are marketing, you have to be able to satisfy the needs of others, get them excited and improve their lives.

There is always room for growth: Serious business bloggers never let down. They’re never satisfied with things as they are, knowing they can always be better.

Attaining goals and prioritizing the tasks that will get them there, are the blueprint for a solid business. Now, things may be all mapped out, but the savvy business blogger knows that things change.

Business bloggers don’t shy away from change, they embrace it. They know that there is ALWAYS room for the kind of growth that change stimulates.

Never stray from your niche: Business bloggers do not allow themselves to stray from their niche. A niche can encompass so many things, that it is often tempting to dart off into the margins of a niche.

Business bloggers stay on their primary track, and don’t allow themselves to get derailed by trying to be all things to all people. They know their target audience, and focus narrowly on it.

They are always looking for the best ways to improve the lives of their followers and readers.

My Blogging Mentorship Program

So my friends, do you see the difference between chasing fast money and building a solid business?

There are definite traits you must develop when you are building a business.

Do you have those traits?

Are you working to develop them?

Have you designed your blueprint for success?

Or, do you find yourself being so busy chasing fast money, that you have no time or energy to spend on building a solid business?

I really would love your input.

I’ve been running my business blog for almost 8 years. While the road has been rough, it’s also (and still is) given me a sense of fulfillment knowing that I’m providing value as well as a good service to the people instead of chasing a quick buck (which I’ve seen no good luck come from).

While the blog is not profitable yet, it’s still bringing in cash but I think it’s worth mentioning that it takes a lot of patience & hard work to even get to that point.

I see that this piece was written almost 2 years ago but it’s still relevant in 2017 as it all comes down to doing good business at the end of the day.

    Hi Donna,

I am so happy to see for your true difference between chasing for faster money or build up a solid business.

Solid business can give money for long time. But chasing behind of money is just time killing.

I lover your word on “give content as free, when it reach level just start selling from it”.

I think this one of the best advice to get more sell from blog. It is good suggestion for the newbie not to rum behind force sell.

Make a great business plan. Give your time with your business and you will be success very soon.

Thank you donna for your valuable content.

    Hi Donna,

    Motivating post, indeed! 🙂

I must admit that I’m a person who wants to build a solid business. I’m not too keen on fast money. Usually if we get money that way, the money was also quickly lost. It was not long lasting. I want to build a long lasting business.

Now I’m trying to make it happen. I like your words that look at the process, not the result. I strongly agree with this.

Well, if I was a results-oriented person, I might have given up long ago. But I know that all the solid business it takes a process, I can not give up on my dreams no matter what. 🙂

Thank you for sharing this, Donna.
After reading this, I feel I have the extra strength to do better than before. I will do my best. Let us do our best. 😉

    Enjoy your weekend!

      Hi Nanda,

I am thrilled that you mentioned after reading this post you feel like you have extra strength to do better than before. There is no greater compliment than that and I am grateful.

Building a business is not an easy task, but from what I do know about you, there is no doubt in my mind that you are on your way! You have the right mindset, and always provide good information.

And yes..if you were a results-oriented person you would have given up long ago. But here you are and you are on the journey….I like to call business a journey because it is always growing.

    Hi Donna,

I love that you bring this topic up because I’ve been seeing a whole lot of “fast money” pitches and I know many people may wonder which way to go with their business blog.

It’s especially hard for others to understand that there is no such thing as fast money rather they must build their business will valuable content then the money will come. If you are able to provide value and concern for others then it will pay off.

    Thanks for sharing!

When will people learn.. there is no quick money… it’s not the marketing either. I just listened to a webinar the other day and the presenter said “Content is over riding marketing”. It’s allabout the connections being made – as you know. The “quick” cash programs are just a bunch of – you know what. Integrity still rocks in my book of doing things ….

      Hi Andrea,

Indeed, there is no get rich quick solutions. You bring up a good point that students spend years of their lives in college coming out with a huge debt only to be working toward a business.

How much cost effective is it to take online courses in a specific niche? Not much compared to the cost of college.

Building a business here online is quicker that depending on a “job” in my opinion.

What a marvellous Distinction you make here Donna… and you have laid such a great trail, that I, and I’m sure others, can see some part of their online journey mentioned in the chasing money fast section!

It has always been my intention to build a business, and, just reflecting, it is possible to see where moments of clarity have kicked in on my journey, and giving value, and branding myself became the way to present myself.

Having a niche, a plan and a focus make things WAY easier, and I love learning, testing and sharing and will soon be teaching too!

Blogging is awesome, and I think the BEST way to present your business to the world, and blogging communities are fantastic for support and syndication.

      Hi Jacs,

Branding is the most important thing we can do through our blogs. Finding your niche does make things way easier. You have effectively branded yourself Jacs, and build a Know Like and Trust factor online.

Indeed, syndication is the way to go, especially when in blogging communities. One doesn’t have to shout out “look at me” but instead others do that for you. That is one thing I am grateful for from the beginning of my blogging journey….”Tribes” or now popular way of calling them “communities” because without others, we would be in dead space.

As long as you love learning testing and sharing, you are a good teacher already!

Really loved your post! I am definately in the Business Building category, (as you know) I am always looking for the best ways to improve the lives of my followers and readers in the daily blog posts that I share. I find that most of the time, my readers resonate with my posts and implement the tips…..which makes me feel really good because I know that what I put out people relate to, and that is a very good thing for a blogger who is working on building a business online.

Throughout your post I kept nodding my head because I can TOTALLY relate to everything that you shared…….Thank you for always bringing the value!

As for the FAST MONEY well, there is NO SUCH THING as I have come to realize bigtime since I have been blogging……so many people chase that “fast money” and fall flat on their faces…….if you are a smart marketer, entrepreneur, or blogger, you will be wise to stick with what will bring you the most success in the long run….business building 🙂

    Hi Donna,
I do see the message you are sending here. Blogging is not for the fast buck seekers.
If you “stick to the process of building a business, the results they want will follow, sooner or later.” I do believe this. You need to give value to people so they see that you can be liked,
& trusted first When they like you they will do business with you. I seem to recall that on a pic I did on a facebook page.

I liked “fast money” bloggers focus purely on results (how much money did I make today?), the “business bloggers” focus on consistently and diligently working the process that they have laid out for themselves. We bloggers, do work hard ” so if you are busy chasing fast money, t you will have no time or energy to spend on building a solid business”. Exactly it!

When I see the “fast money bloggers” posting how much money they made in a day, it turns me off. Anyone can do something like that! If that is all they are interested in. But does it last? Probably not!

However, those who are building a business spend more time and energy doing just that. They don’t have to flaunt what they are making in order to capture other’s interests.

They just go on their way..keeping on building.

    Hello Donna,

This is great post, and I vote for this if you ask me to vote it out among 10 or 100 posts, because I have been noticing this.

I get emails, FB msgs from many newbies, they mostly ask me how to make money rather than asking how to build a great blog that can earn good later in future.

When I started blogging, I was not aware that the thing I was doing actually popularly known as blogging as I was too new for Internet to know these things.

Other thing is, I was not aware that what I was doing can be a great source of earning, and this is why I was able to invest my time in learning more rather than earning because I didn’t it can earn money. After 7 months when I get a review offer, then I got to know that this can be a business model if I build it the right way.

And here I am, now I am earning a living doing these things. 🙂

      Hi Atish,

I am so happy that you are earning a living do ing what you do. It is difficult in the beginning because we don’t have a business model in mind.

But once we invest in learning curves, and of course put it into action, we do get the solution. Marketing is a huge learning curve, especially on the internet.

Oh those FB messages! It is always great to have somewhere to direct them … your own coaching, a product and so forth. But when someone asks me that question I do reply it is just like building any other business… one must be willing to take the time to do so and have a business plan.

This is a good way to sort out those who are money chasers from those who really want to build a business.

    Hey Donna,

I use to be the chaser for a long time up until I ran into Mike Dillard with his Attraction Marketing. That’s when I realize I’m not attractive lol

So of course I had to start making some changes. You know the funny thing is how many people say “like attracts like” but yet they are the main chasers and attract chasers to them also. When I was doing this I had a lot of people approach me about their opportunity and would get mad when I didn’t join them or even look at it.

As I start learning and apply g what I learn about building a business, the less I started to attract the chasers and the more I started attract ting people of value. I still get chasers once in a while but not like I use to.

The one thing that you said that I had to chuckle to myself about was when you talk about those blog post that although it look like it’s something of value, it turns out to be a sales page lol. This has happened to me quite a few times and yes I hate it when that happens!

But these were some excellent tips on how to properly build a solid business! I do put these tips to practice and I think the most important one of these tips is having clarity because it gives you direction and shows consistency among your audience!

Thanks for sharing Donna! Have a great weekend!

      Hi Sherman,

Clarity is the key word here. When we build any business, we must be clear fro the start. One wouldn’t open a pizza place off line and sell jewelry lol.

We need to be there as a service to others, and eventually it can catch on. Ahh..patience is the key here. If anyone things they can come online and make fast cash, they will quickly find out it is not the case.

It is so true what you stated the the less you started attracting chasers, the more you started to attract those with value.

    Hi Donna

Great article as always – I had to smile at the “Donate Button” comments, I’m glad to know I’m not alone in thinking that’s rather desperate!

I will confess I’ve been something of a “hopper”, but it’s been part of my learning process, and I have taken something on board from each of my failed ventures.

Definitely I listened to the wrong people in the outset, but I’m now fore-warned and realize that the online streets aren’t paved with gold. I have now found a good group of people to hang out with and learn from – yourself included of course.

I hope to pass on some of my experiences to newcomers looking to start an online business so that they’ll learn from, and avoid, my mistakes.

Unfortunately the one time I did stick with a company and had 5 solid years of earning well from the same company, they closed their doors on us all, pinched our customers and re-opened a similar business without us. After that I rather took a “portfolio approach” from a feeling of insecurity. It didn’t work as I couldn’t keep all the balls in the air!

Happily I have now found a long-established (2008) company to focus on that has solved many of the problems I found before – and I’ve learned so much in the intervening years that I can pass onto my team.

I guess I’m just one of those people that learns better from mistakes than from research. LOL

    Have a great weekend, Joy

Thank you so much for sharing on this topic. I too learn from past mistakes, but each and every time, I treasure them as learning lessons I’ll never do again.

I think it is so great to see you happy with your new team and business. You sure have a lot of knowledge under your belt. And because you are going out there to teach others not to make the same mistakes as you…you will be a powerful teacher.

Listening to people in the beginning of our online journey is so common, because there are many false promises out there and as you well put it the “online streets aren’t paved with gold” is spot on!

Oh yea..that donate button to me is like Hi I’m desperate! Sorry if I offended anyone who has it, but think twice! 😉

What a great article Donna – thanks for writing it. Thanks also to Adrienne Smith for pointing me to your site.

As a response I admit that I have chased big bucks for many years, but part of me never felt comfortable with it, even though from a financial standpoint I did make plenty of money. But here’s what I found – there’s not much substance to it, and there’s not much longevity to it either.

My personality type is much more aligned with activities revolving around nurturing and cultivating people. More of a farmer than a hunter, I guess. That’s why I now invest more and more time in the creation of content, networking with others of like mind, and cultivating my email list on a regular basis.

You are right when you talk about the folly of people who jump from one thing to another- shiny object syndrome. I see it happen all the time and even though I caution people from doing it, usually they ignore the advice and do it anyway! One of the problems with many of these folk is that they invest in the value of others when they should be investing in their own value (ie building their own brand and their own online assets).

Looking back at my own experiences with affiliate and mlm companies all I can say is that rather than joining a program because you ‘wanna make money’, your motivation should be more aligned with this thinking: ‘How can I create value in the marketplace?’ Answer that and you may not even need to join another mlm scheme.

Thanks again for your wonderful article.

      Hi Kim,

Welcome to my blog. Chasing big bucks is one thing and sure one can make some money, but it is not long lasting.

It is like building a house without a good foundation. The house can look beautiful, but one day it will all crash down. I too am like a farmer and not a hunter. I rather cultivate a business that will last. Not an easy task by no means, but a profitable one, even on the journey itself.

I did try an MLM once, but my heart just wasn’t into it. I stunk at being an MLM person because I found it to be too pushy for my personality.

I rather engage with people and get to know, like and trust factor. When they ask a question, I can usually dig up an old blog post to help them. If they want to learn more, I’ve been developing products for the last two years.

It is an adventure for me, especially one of my products which is an ongoing learning curve. And of course, doing a one to one coaching is the best of all. I love to watch people grow and succeed!

Thank you for your wonderful input on this subject.

    Hi Susan,

It does irritate me when I see a blogger doing this. Now I know some that have one on their blogs might be offended, but, yes…I tell it like it is.

It just doesn’t work and there are many ways to monetize besides that. Even “save the whales” or anything like that to donate to me does not belong on a blog.

We all have our own charities that we give money to. It is a personal decision.

    Thanks for bringing it up.

Hi Donna, I thought maybe it was just me who thought the donate to me button was nothing short of begging. Glad someone finally said it like it is. 🙂 to me it just seems like another way for people who don’t want to do the hard work, put in the time and effort to build their blog and community, but want it the easy way. Unfortunately nothing comes easy. Like they say if it seems to good to be true, it probably is, right? If putting a donate button on your page actually worked, everyone would be doing it.

    Hi Donna,

Great post. i was one of those types for a very long time; longer than I care to admit but I also had been given bad advice from people.

I knew there was a better way and I kept searching until I found the right people to follow, listen to and people who tell the whole truth; not just part of the solution.

I am happy to count you and David among the “right people” I found to follow.

There are so many things out there that can confuse you as in the past… But once you make that decision to what exactly you want to do in business…you can achieve it. There is no quick money to be made. The only way to make some quick money is to get a part time job lol. But I know it is difficult for you to even do that with your busy schedule.

    Hi, Donna

I started my blog few months ago, it is an adverture for me. Since I do not have any technical background, it is not an easy matter to build a good website for my business.

While I am trying to build followers, I am in the process of looking for long-term business opportunities. You listed out the trail of blogger who build solid business will help me to narrow down some of the business opportuniies.

I will use your list as the reference point for not being the blogger who chases money instead of building solid business.

    Thanks!

      Hi Stella,

Once you decide what type of business you want to be in ..the one that wakes you up in the morning raring to go with deep passion, you can put that as a primary goal.

Then just work backwards. Plan it all out of the many ways to grow your business. Via your blog, Social media, making your own product…whatever you choose.

There are so many parts to the whole and as long as you are ready to take that plunge it can be done.

You took me back in time Donna to my first year online. Memories of me placing banners on the sidebar of my then website thinking people would click in their hundreds and provide me with hundreds of dollars in affiliate money. It was like that day when you first learn Santa wasn’t coming again when the dollar signs remained at 0.

That was many years ago. I discovered over the years that what you teach in this article is exactly the road new online entrepreneurs need to take. It’s rare there’s a quick way to make money on the internet. For most people it needs clear, focused and consistent action, with a big dollop of patience and an even bigger dollop of passion.

    Great article Donna.

    Hello Donna,

Its good to be here after a long time.
You always bring something unique to your readers. Today you brought one of the finest topic into light. Most of newbie bloggers try to make money and don’t even think about the quality of their posts.

They need to figure out whether they want to remain into temporary penny making or they want to build their business. Its kind of hard question for them but still they have to decide.
I have seen many bloggers who try to promote others product so much just to have some money. I mean far from that they should concentrate at their own blog.

    Thanks for the post.

I love this about the banners in the sidebar Donna, often none of the ads have a thing to do with the content that’s shared. If you’re on WordPress you have a snowflakes chance of targeting the banners better by only displaying certain banners when a post is in a certain category. You’ll need Thrive Clever Widgets or Conditional Widgets to do this, but it gives over a 100% better reader experience instead of looking like spam.

I agree with Andrew about the donate button, and would like to add that sites that display them often have zero comments or shares and give you no reason to donate!

Blogging as a business is harder, gosh, my husband came into my business and it turns out I had a very lucrative hobby. It’s now a business.

    Hey Donna,

You’ve touched a wonderful topic which could be sensational to some. I mean all those bloggers (fast money chasers) who write and publish only promotional blog posts, and those who put up donate button might be taken aback reading this post 🙂 For good!

I’ve been annoyed by those fast money chasers and it is not at all hard to spot one. You usually clearly see the attitude when you land on their blogs.

I agree very much that for money chasers it is all about getting and for those who are building a solid business it is about giving.

And I’m so proud to say that I’m on the second category, building my own business. I look at the long term benefits, long term relationships and long term value and impact I can create in people’s life.

For the same reason I maintain a strict quality when I recommend a product to my readers – more than the one time sale and the affiliate commission, the relationship matters to me the most. I don’t want to ruin that bond just for a few dollars.

Thanks for making a strong message here. Have a great week Donna.

    Cheers,
    Jane.

      Hi Jane,

Yes, the message is quite strong, and those who are money chasers may not like this post, but I’ve been around a long time and have seen not only newbies, but people that have been online doing the money chaser game. I like these people, so much so, that I had to shout it out because I see that they are ruining their brand. Who they are. Chasing a fast buck is evident when you land on their blogs. I just don’t want to see anyone burn and crash their business or reputation.

When it comes to recommending a product to my readers, I too have a strict policy. It must be something I use myself and provides help and good quality and especially good customer service.

I do embed my offer to my own products on every post, just in case someone wants to take their business to a higher level.

I too don’t want to ruin the bonds I have made over the years for just a few dollars.

Thanks for coming by and giving such a great input to this matter,

    Hi Donna

Very interesting topic you picked and the way you compared both the approaches of make money blogging is really mind blowing. This shows how vast experience you have of dealing both kind of bloggers.

I think blogging is one of the few fields where followers of shortcuts face the worst type of failure after sometime and then eventually they become online thugs to mint money with every source because they lose their online reputation and can never come up with a personal brand.

The is the bounden duty of blogging leaders to inculcate the newbies that either join this field with long term plans or search any other field where one can earn with the short term approach of earning a few bucks.

I love your words for those who put the donate button on their blog. To be very frank so many people advised me to put this shameful (to me) button on my green blogging because that upholds an environmental cause. But I believe a true marketer can create gold from the trash with a long-term viable strategy.

Thanks a lot for your very loud thoughts on the subject and no doubt who can explain this topic better than with huge experience of blogging mentoring.

      Hi Mi,

I just had to pick this topic because I see not only newbies but those “jumpers” that have been online for a while that jump from one “great” thing to another. They are not branding themselves at all. Just boring the heck out of people telling them to Join one thing or another. It sure ruins their reputation online.

The true business person sticks to a brand, has a blueprint of business…and of course keeps learning about how business is run online. (there is never enough to learn) As they brand themselves well, they can come up with their own product/services and can offer them in an ethical manner.

A true business person knows very well that business requires patience and persistence. Never going off track. They also know that there is no quick fix.

As for that donate button..I love your response to that one because ” a true marketer CAN create gold from trash with long term viable strategy.” as you mentioned.

Thank you for your input here Mi, because you are a true businessman!

    Hi Donna,

I like the distinction you have made here between chasing fast money and building a long-term business.

It does take time to build a business properly, and yes, you can become disheartened along the way, but if you have your blueprint to refer back to it will keep you focused.

I’m always looking to learn new things and when I do I make a point of sharing that experience with my community.

Pretty eye opening post! I think it made me realize I do not yet have the clarity or consistency, so that is something I need to focus & hone in on. I have a delicate balance with time right now so I think I’ve left these things on the back burner, but I really want to start deciding what exactly my blog “is” and what my “voice” is and go from there. Hi Donna,

Bravo my friend!!!! This is a fantastic post.

Here is my favorite line: “White “fast money” bloggers are always “on the take,” “business bloggers” are always “on the give.””

I was just having a conversation with a prospect the other day that said they “NEED” fast growth. I encouraged them to get a part-time job.

The truth is that if they experience fast growth they likely won’t survive it. Fast growth is just as lethal as no growth and usually the results are ultimately the same.

The best businesses are those that grow steadily over time. Of course we all want to be profitable but the truth is that most businesses will fail at a rate of 70% over the first 2 years according to the Small Business Administration.

There are lots of reasons but I believe the primary is that skipped the clarity they needed in order to create a plan that will enable them to survive the tough years as they learn more about their business.

It’s never what you know that gets you; it’s what you don’t know.

    Fantastic post Donna!!!!

    Have a great week.

      Hi Don,

I did have a similar experience with a prospective client asking me how do I make fast money and my answer was the same as you gave “Get a part time job!”

Thank you for your wonderful input on this topic.

I’ve learned from the past with an off line business that it takes about two years to get a good return. That was the first lesson. So I plugged away at it and that was decades ago when I had a shop. Because I built that business with clarity and a strong foundation I knew it was going to work and it did!

To this day, I may not be in that store front, but clients keep pouring in because of what I had built from scratch. I get referrals every week because I stick to my own rules and know how this business works.

I’ve left that shop 13 years ago, but have someone working there to pick up my slack and deal with people I rather not deal with he he. Shifting people from one to one in person consultations was a bit difficult at first, but they got used to the phone and now Ichat and Skpe if they want.

I just had to throw that in there because once we have clarity we can move the heard to the direction that suits us.

    Hi Donna,

This is a great breakdown between those who are chasing fast money and those who are building a solid business. You can tell as soon as you land on a page what a blogger’s intentions are. It’s so easy to see who is only in it for the money and not concerned with engaging with their readers or building a community. You would think as many posts as there are about engagement and creating valuable content that they’d come across one somewhere on social media, right?

I have to agree with you on the donate button on a blog. I just don’t think it’s professional.

My goal is definitely to build a business. Sure fast money sounds appealing but like you said, eventually it fizzles out and you’re left hearing crickets because nothing is happening. 🙂

I am definitely sticking to the process I’ve learned and dare not stray from it. The results are simply a bonus for following the process. I make it a point not to focus on the money part and more on what can I offer my readers and how can I help them achieve their dreams or goals.

I’m always looking for ways to keep growing and learning. There are so much to learn about blogging and building a business that it’s not difficult to find something new :).

As usual Donna, you rocked this post! Hope you had a great day!

Your intention of helping others is the basis of your blog and business. You are building rather than chasing stuff all around.

So good to know you are sticking to your process and are not straying from it. Your point of not focusing on money and more what you can offer to your readers is spot on. Money is a funny thing, it does follow when you have the right intention as you do!

As you have the incentive of looking forward to learning, you will do great. I always say that Learning is Earning. The learning never stops, it is part of our business plan. We all need to set aside time for learning curves. And when we do, it is a great way to share it with others.

I was SO afraid to even try to use it as anything other than for personal expression, but here, when it doesn’t contribute to your livelihood, it’s easy to turn away from it since “it doesn’t pay the bills’.

Life took on its own direction for a while (as did my my writing) and whatever consistency I did have in the beginning fell away due to a lack of a clear goal. I also focused on my professional writing and my blog took a back seat for that reason, among others.

I’m not quite sure how to turn blogging into a business, but it’s time to learn. No time like the present, right?

      Hi Dana,

I appreciate your honesty in this conversation. If you are a writer, you have so many opportunities on the online world. There are many who are begging for a professional writer for their blogs, plr products and so on.

Yes, time to learn how to turn your blog into a business. I would say if you are a writer, do a little planning of how your content of your blog will enhance people to opt in to your writing services if that is what you want to do.

I would suggest you just start writing posts on whatever topic you choose. Maybe writing. We can all use more suggestions of how to write a compelling blog post. I know a few bloggers that do that and are in that niche. Then they give a good Call To Action to “hire me”

If this is something you would like to do, and keep your blog consistent, you will do quite well. It starts with the mindset…get rid of the fear….then consistency…then the journey begins.

    Another great post, Donna!

The one great takeaway I have from you is that the way you present this information, chasing fast money or building a solid business — you make the two choices very polar opposites. What’s truly ironic is that often the “fast money chasers” think they are really building a solid long-term business!

I see so many people each day chasing money too. They connect with me all over online asking if I want to join this opportunity or that one. They jump from one to the next and don’t stick with anything very long. I feel sorry for people that get on that hamster wheel and never experience any freedom or positive results. They eventually fall off the wheel, exhausted and broke.

Maybe falling off the hamster wheel is one of the best things that can happen to them! They get a bit beat up, but then maybe they’ll wake up!

When you and I spoke last year, I took it all in. I made a plan. I started doing more research. I had some personal things come up that kept me from following through for awhile. But, now I’m ready. I resolved my personal issues and I’m building my long-term business. I feel it’s best to implement and build when you are ready, building from a position of strength rather than just put a site online just to say you have a site.

Blogging, as you clearly point out, is hard work, takes persistence, responsibility, and dedication. I am living in reality and I’m ready to follow my plan. The results will come over time and my efforts.

Thank you for the clarity and your important insight.

      Hi Deborah,

I like the way you described those “jumpers” like hamsters on a wheel. Hopefully that difficult lesson would pay off. I know some that did. After a few times, they learned how to find clarity and build an effective business of their own. As for the others, they seemed to disappear unfortunately.

I must say that since we spoke, I’ve seen you grow in leaps and bounds with your blog and business. You have clarity and do a very good job! Watching you grow with your business is such a delight for me.

You do have so much to share, from your incredible art to your own business background in the past. Fusing the two, I’ve seen you master your blog and business. BRAVO!

    Hi Donna,

What a great article you wrote there! If there is something I hate is when I go to a site, and there are flashing ads appearing from all sides and you have to close them all to get to the actual post. Usually when it happens, I close the page and move on.

When I first started into the blogging world, I wanted to make money. So I tried adding lots of ads to my blog, and it didn’t pay off at all, so now I prefer a more simple look.

Thanks a lot for this excellent information. It helped me a lot clarify this matter. Have a great week ahead! 🙂

      Hi Nataly,

So good to know this helped you clarify this matter. Those annoying ads never add up to much money. To truly monetize our blogs, we have to have a real business plan. One which takes time. It all starts with our mindset…then write down our big plan and work backwards.

Yes, there might be tweaks along the way, and bumps in the road, so we have to take that into consideration. Then we have on our sidebar an opt in for either something free or paid that we ourselves introduce. A short video if it is an affiliate, or even better if we have our own product/and/or service.

All happened because I shifted my attention from getting to giving, from results to process, and I fell in love with the process…in the process 😉 This is a toughie to get until you do some serious mindset work, or if you’re tired of struggling online. A bit of both for me 🙂

    Hi Donna,

You are quite right: There are bloggers who are chasing after the money and there are those who are interested in developing their blog into a long term business.

I have met many of these fast-money chasers. Maybe their strategies worked in 2001 but right now it does not. Or if it does, it definitely does not bring in the same results as back then. I see many bloggers who advertise how you can make $675 a day working from home with no experience or skill. But many people are wise to such tricks and claims now.

The best approach to blogging is to be ready to give and to believe in the process. This is hard but it pays off in the long run. Blogging is not a magic lamp that drops money at your feet. Instead it is a platform through which you can meet people, build trust and then sell your products. Just like any other business, this process takes time and dedication. You have to know what your goal is, and be consistent in your efforts to attain it. Despite temptations to delve into other niches, you have to stick to what you started, if you want to see long term gains.

Many newbie bloggers see the success stories of Neil Patel, Pat Flynn and other probloggers and want to get that success. But they forget that the media is good at sensational headlines. These probloggers did not just wake up and write one post and start earning 6-figures. No. It took time, consistency and a dedicated effort to keep learning before they got there.

I am really glad you shared these insights on what really makes a successful blog. Its a must read for anyone serious about transforming their blogs into long-term businesses.

      Hi Chioma,

Thank you for your wonderful input. It is a shame to see bloggers still chasing fast cash, especially when they are gifted in so many ways. Unfortunately those false promises work for those who are marketing them, but that is short term too. The flock will soon leave, disappointed..or worse, never coming back.

I still see it going on with some bloggers and they are “jumpers” from one thing to another. Sometimes I do but in and message them … some will listen, others will keep jumping.

When you mention these pro bloggers, many of us understand that it did take a lot of time and energy to get to where they are now.

This is why I like to shout out ever now and then that blogging is part of our business model. It is a place to meet and greet others.

When in the market place, where people don’t know me well they ALWAYS come and check my blog for some kind of social proof. But that didn’t happen overnight. My blog took time to be where it is now. It required dedication, writing for others, and of course persistence.

If anyone is serious about transforming their blogs into a long term business, they do have to have a plan..a blueprint of some kind to incorporate it with marketing.

Thanks so much for stopping by,

Hi Donnia, I’ve been here and done this and totally agree that it doesn’t work long term. When constantly chasing others with links, and banner ads, we’re losing out on that time to build our expertise, and this can be valuable time. Digging in and building value may be a slower process, but well worth it in the end. Thanks as always. Great info.

    Hi Donna,

What a great message because there are still SO many people who continue to chase the fast cash! I learned a long time ago that this isn’t a sustainable business model.

With the way the online world works, there are so many people out there that vying for our attention. We really have to make a good impression and continue to only provide fabulous solid products and services that our subscribers will want in order to continue making money. Hoping someone will click on your link and buy from you is probably a million to one odds. Sure, there are some people who don’t care who you are and want what you’re selling but you aren’t going to get enough of those in order to support yourself.

When you concentrate more on building a solid foundation and over time build up that audience who wants to buy from you then you’ll continue to have repeat customers. That’s the only type of business people should be creating but most fail because they don’t have the patience.

Just beware of those always going after the shiny object and hoping to strike it rich. We only wish that would work but the rest of us live in the real world and are slowly building our business so it can withstand the test of time.

Thank you for sharing this message and I’m sure you’re going to find that a lot of people will get their wake up call after reading this one. 😉

Enjoy your week and have a great one.

I know I’ve said it time and time again that there is no get rich quick solutions and jumping around won’t get you anywhere but frustrated….or worse give up.

Business does take time. I see too many people out there either jumping around or clinging at every shiny object. It leads to disaster..so I do try to shout out the message for those who really want to make a business work. 🙂

    Hi Donna,

Great reminder for those shiny objects chasers.

I think that this culture is really a child of the internet though, because before that there was the lottery, and casinos or course, but the shiny object syndrome was basally none existent.

I know for me, in the early days of the internet I really fell into a few of those traps myself, so I’m not going to say that’s easy not to be tempted, especially for new comers, but at least now there are more forewarning out there, than they were when I started working online.

The donate bottom on a blog always made me wonder, what the heck is that? That is totally begging, I agree, and I’m glad that’s what you’re thinking because I didn’t know if anyone thought that way before today. Relieved 🙂

Building a real business takes time, efforts, and being involved in one way or another, but in the end that’s the only way to make real money that’s constant and to be proud of.

    Great post, Donna. Will share.

    Good morning, Donna,

After reading your article, I’m trying to figure out where I fit in. I would love to build a business out of MGP, however, it currently sits as a Community. What are your thoughts on sponsored posts? This is what I’ve recently joined up in. They produce content related to the theme of MGP and include a link. No need to click the link because the published post is the income.

I’ve tried the affiliate links and it was short lived. I also felt horrible, in a way, with having the banners and such on my page. However, I still do keep two: Grammarly (I love) and Studiopress.

Thanks for sharing this. You know I’ll be passing it along.

      Hi Bren,

I think it’s short term thinking to start putting sponsored posts on your blog because it detracts from your brand #1 and it hurts your SEO ranking considerably #2

I’m not a big SEO person, but your blog or site takes on a whole new feeling when it features sponsored posts. Of course, you could do it occasionally without altering your brand or SEO ranking too much, but then again, what will that accomplish for you long term?

If people are really interested in the content of the sponsored post, they may click there and abandon your blog altogether #1 and your business #2. Wouldn’t it be better to have them click to something that YOU can offer them instead of someone else.

That’s where you get into building a real business instead of just getting a quick fee for a post or commission for an affiliate product.

You need to develop a true blueprint for where your business should be, and what exact steps you can take to get it there. It’s a puzzle and you need to see the puzzle completed in your mind first, on paper second.

Then you turn the puzzle upside down and analyze each of the pieces. Then work on putting all those pieces into the puzzle frame and you’ve reached your first big goal!

It’s not nearly as much work as you might think, but requires knowing where you want to be and HOW to get there.

Wow as you were describing the fast cash crowd I actually felt the muscles in my shoulders cramping up! As you pointed out this pertains to any business not just blogging. When I worked as a small business coach I saw a lot of the bouncers – people who bounced from business to business – and if they didn’t see immediate results they’d move on to the next ‘opportunity’. I quickly learned to avoid those clients!

I especially relate to your point about there always being room for growth. I love to learn new things and experiment – in fact when I find myself feeling tired or discouraged the best remedy is to spend a little time looking back at where I was just 2 short years ago and how much I’ve learned since then – it’s a great motivational exercise. 🙂 Thanks for the inspiration Donna!

He he…I like your reaction to that fast cash crowd! When working with clients, we do have to determine those “bouncers” because we know that kind of behavior only leads to disaster lol.

It is a great motivational exercise when we measure where we were 2 years ago and now. I like to measure my growth also. We do have to be on a constant learning curve. It starts with the “SELF” always learning many ways to improve and also our business. We need to “learn to earn”

    Hi Donna,

This is such a great topic and a pet peeve of mine. All of the things you say are so absolutely true. I’m a network marketer and it ticks me off to no end that a ‘thousand’ network marketers approach me on a daily basis. Now that’s not the issue. The issue is I know these people and they do hop from one MLM to the next, never making money and still looking for that golden coin.

I’ve been with the same company for 7 years and made money. Am I rich ‘No’ but it certainly kept me going and was substantial enough to make me stay with the company. When I invest in something, you have to put many of the things you noted above into it.

I knew what I wanted and how much I wanted to make and I knew it wasn’t going to come instantaneously. I knew it was going to take time. That’s a given and I don’t know why people don’t know that. You have to learn the business and learn how to run one including the educational aspects of how to run a business. You just can’t sit back and take the money. And you have to set goals.

Whether it’s blogging or something else, it is about building a solid business and we can’t give up and we must take all these things you mentioned into account before we even begin.

Anyway, great post! Tell the truth girl! That’s what people need to here.

Thank you for writing such a great and wonderful article.
    Barbara.

      Hi Barbara,

Thanks so much for adding value to this post by your experience. Because I know you quite well, I know you are a businesswoman. You go into a business with that mindset and are successful at what you do and teach others.

Network Marketing is one niche that few people like you know how to work it. There are many that jump into one after another then do the blame game. “Oh that company sucks” or “my up-line person didn’t teach me anything” Well the later can be true. But I know with people like you, every one that joins your venture will get a good lesson in marketing.

No matter what business we are in, we have to stick it out. There will be ups and downs and that only comes with any business. But we need to always be learning, especially marketing. There is never enough information we can apply.

      Thanks again for your input.
