Promoting Your Blog Just Got Easier

On this guest post from my friend Sarah Arrow will show you how Promoting Your Blog Just Got Easier.

I’ve known Sarah for a long time, now, and she is a real pro when it comes to blogging and promoting.

Here, she will share with you how your blog’s exposure and audience reach can skyrocket.

Take it away, Sarah.

“I’m not sure I can follow everything you do if you move onto Periscope” was the comment that made my blood run cold.

Why did an active member of my blogging community think I was moving onto Periscope?

I love blogging.

I was born to blog.

I live to blog.

I’ll never stop blogging…†Oh look! Periscope…

What’s a blog again?

And yes, I can see why a member of my blogging community would think I’m moving from blogging to scoping.

I’ve been there a lot lately, and I even do weekly #BlogScopes on Periscope (Friday midday UK time and my husband, Kevin Arrow, does Friday evening 8pm UK which is more suited to the US viewers).

I encourage bloggers to come on and chat with me.

So what can Periscope do for Bloggers? And should we really be there?

For any type of writer, Periscope’s live streaming isn’t just great for plugging your work.

I’ve sold books from a Scope, and it’s pretty easy to do, but you really want to add value to the community, just like you do in a blog post, before you start with a buy my shizzle scope (Shizzle is a technical term for which I apologise).

Sure, you can make sales, but Periscope is so much more than that.

Here are three smart ways to use for Periscope that bloggers and writers should try.

Give them what they want AKA Crowdsourcing

One of the things professional bloggers will always advise their readers to do, is to give the audience what they want, and not what you the blogger wants to give them.

If you’re a new blogger, you’ll find this advice sucks as you often hear back crickets, and you’ll have no idea what your audience wants.

On Periscope, you can ask the viewers what they’d like to read on your blog.

The Periscope platform is built for interaction, and you can encourage your viewers to comment and interact with you.

When you start your broadcast you can had hashtags and attract people new to you and your blog.

You can encourage your viewers to share with their followers and before you know it, you’ll have 50 people talking to you and giving you feedback. In other words, bounce ideas off of your viewers via Periscope.

If you have blogger’s block (like writer’s block, but a hundred times more lethal), Scoping is a good way to get suggestions for writing prompts from your viewers.

Announce new blog posts!!!

Ta Da!

You’ve crowdsourced your content, now is the time to announce it.

Get people interested by telling them that you’ll have a special announcement on Periscope, then give the date and time. Make your update intriguing, and use a hashtag such as #secret or #announcement.

Build a buzz and then when live share with your viewers an advance reading of the post, share with them some extra tips, something exclusive for them, and then tell them the URL of you blog and invite them to take a look and share the post.

I often embed a Scope into a blog post, so that my readers can see the bonus content, and that they’ll be encouraged to come and join in a live conversation.

Demonstrate your capability

If you’ve never met me virtually before, or attended a training webinar, you’ll have no idea how creative I am.

I can pull a blog post headline from thin air, and spin it into a series of 6 awesome posts and I can do it again and again and again, and of course, seeing is believing.

So I did it on a Periscope.

I demonstrated my capability and showed 280 people live on how to do this.

The next day I had over 100 searches for Sarah Arrow Blogging, that arrived on my site, and 96 new subscribers.

When did you last do something for 5 minutes that gave you that many subscribers?

I’ll confess the first time I did a 5 minute scope on blogging I only got 24 subscribers. And that was 24 more than expected!

I never dreamed for one moment that Periscope could be a brilliant list building tool, but it is.

Now, I’ve shared with you what you can do on Periscope as a blogger, are you going to join me and Donna?

The essentials you need to start Scoping

1.Courage

Live streaming isn’t easy.

As fast as you talk, your viewers are interacting and talking back to you. People can see you, but you can’t see them.

If you’re not comfortable in your own skin, then Periscope will seem lethal. Let me reassure you it’s worth doing, and I say this as a person with bright red hair and an accent that isn’t American, and sounds nothing like the Queen’s.

2. A Smartphone

To deliver live Scopes, or Casts as they’re sometimes called, you’ll need to be able to download the Periscope app.

The Periscope app is simple to install, and set up.

Then you connect it with Twitter. You do have Twitter don’t you?

So, all that you need is a smartphone and Twitter… You can actually install Periscope without Twitter but to get the most from it, connect Periscope to your Twitter account, and keep your Periscope name and your Twitter name the same, so people can contact you straight after your Scope.

3. The ability to talk on screen…

… And not pass out.

Ideally you’d get a tripod, as holding your phone at arms length for a period of time can be quite tough, and then you’ll shake, and then you’ll lose courage and not have a very pleasant scoping experience.

You’ll need a few more items in your Scope kit, but a tripod is the least you should start with. Practice talking to your phone camera a few times, with the camera facing you. It’s not the real thing, but you’ll soon get used to talking to your phone, and you’ll lose any fear you may have had.

4. Some notes

For all the good intent in the world, you will go off topic on Periscope if you do it right. And by doing it right I mean talking back to the viewers, answering their comments and interacting with them.

Notes will help you stay on track, and remind you of the key points you’re looking to make.

You may also want to have a piece of paper with your web address on it, or contact details or any other prompt you might like.

5. A good sense of humour

Not everything will go according to plan on your Scope.

If you’re a perfectionist, this tool will make you very uncomfortable.

Embrace it, and go with the flow. Laugh off the things that go wrong, and remember your replay doesn’t last forever, just 24 hours.

Will I stop blogging and move entirely to Periscope? Erm, probably not.

As you read this you can hear the warmth and the humour, and hopefully our conversation has made you smile. If this post was a Scope, it would look just like the above Scope.  If you didn’t watch it yet, this might be good time to do that.

You can clearly see the difference between a blog and a Scope!

I’d love it if you come and followed me over on Periscope, tell me that you are part of the Donna Merrill Tribe and I’ll follow you right back.

I keep hearing more and more about Periscope, but never got it or looked in to it. Thanks for explaining it Sarah. Looks to be a potential platform for many marketers.

Though it’s sure, as you’ve said, for people who are comfortable in their own skin and brave enough to get on camera.

Why not use a web cam instead of phone? Just seems easier.

If I understand it correctly it’s like video marketing, but much more interactive with the audience?

Thanks for having Sarah and posting this Donna 🙂

      Hi Ron,

Periscope only works via phone and not a webcam…right now anyway. It is sort of like video marketing but slower. One has to treat it as another social platform and give some content out. It can be generic or specific.

Eventually we gain followers just like anywhere else and then give the CTA to join whatever we want them too.

I do one every day and download it to Youtube. Make a Youtube card and attach it to a blog post or sales page. So far So Good! 🙂

    Hey Sarah,

Great post here on Donna’s blog.

The topic of periscope is definitely one that I’m starting to see a lot more of and I’m realizing that it’s really one of the major players that you need to have or should have if you want to truly be successful blog in connection with your readers and followers.

One thing that I really would never have expected would be that periscope will be such a great list building tool as it has for you. That really puts a lot of things into perspective for me and makes me really really think I want to actively be active on periscope.

Thanks for the great post and I am looking forward to eventually doing my first scope. Thanks Donna for having Sarah on here.

I haven’t launched into Periscope yet although I am aware that its all the rage. I think combining your blogging with Periscope is a great idea. Helps your audience to get to know you even more and you can interact live with them. Thanks for the tips!

      Hi Jenni,

It seems to be all the rage but only one percent of people are actually using it. The rest are “watchers” It is getting more and more popular by the day.

It comes in handy for me in my business strategy to use it on a blog or on social media…and of course, making new connections.

I haven’t tried Periscope yet. Perhaps later on when I have some time to focus on something new. This year, I’ve tried to focus more on Google Plus and building my Facebook following.

Thanks also for the video, I love the idea that you can ask the audience questions live. What a great opportunity for quick market research!

I’ll put Periscope on my must-try list.

An interesting post of you and Sarah ,
I saw how great you are doing and it seems good for
marketing. Only a pity it only works on iphone, while
Yeplive works on all Cell phones and Androids.
Especially for people in the east and Africa it would be better to use.
Maybe it has to get more popular and more of this
    like Periscope will appear .
I think it is a good thing .

    Hi Sarah and Donna,

Thanks for explaining so well what Periscope is – I’d heard of it but never found the time to investigate it.

As someone who hasn’t even managed to produce a video that made it past the recycle bin, your points “Courage” and “The ability to talk on screen and not pass out” make Periscope a complete no-no for me.

But I appreciate having read about it so that I’ve been able to make that decision without spending a whole load of time.

Your scope was very impressive and if I come across anyone who would enjoy this form of marketing I’ll be sure to send them your way.

I’m glad you learned a bunch from Sarah about Periscope.

Funny thing is, I just did a “scope” yesterday called “Camera Shy?”

It might be something you’d find interesting, so you get the inspiration to start using video and maybe even scoping. It will really help your personal branding to do it, so I’m giving you a gentle “shove” in that direction.

I posted that scope on my FB page yesterday, but scope replays only last for 24 hours. I’m loading it onto YouTube, though, so you could find it on my YouTube Channel… or just google my name + YouTube + Camera Shy and you’ll find it.

It should be live very soon.

      Hi Lozelle,

Good to know you are motivated to give Periscope a try. You can start by viewing people you know who are on it. It’s pretty new and there are some awesome people out there.

When you decide to start, please let me know so we can be “scope” friends. 🙂

What an awesome post as usual Sarah!

First of all, let me say how sorry I am that I missed
your live demonstration of first, pulling a powerful
headline out of thin air & then showing us how to
successfully spin it into at least six more really cool blog posts!

I’m quite sure your audience was completely blown away by
such an incredibly powerful, hands on demonstration!

You really need to convert that entire process into (either) a step
by step PDF and or a step by step video series!LOL!

I’d gladly pay for it!LOL! As I’m sure others would gladly do the same!

Or you could give it away in exchange for some long term bank account
    filling testimonials!LOL!

Actually, your idea is so awesome, it actually sounds like something
Donna or David would have come up with too!

Donna just blows me away with her “think way outside the box” marketing
    brilliance!

I’m so glad she featured you! You just inspired a blog post or two, where
I can reference this article and I’ll be so glad to do so!LOL!

Thanks so much for featuring her Donna!Sarah is such a creative dynamo!
    Just like you!!

      Hi Mark,

Because I had followed Sarah and her husband Kevin Arrow about Periscope, I jumped right in because of my insight to see what a powerful tool this is for my business.

Sarah has been my guide and is way ahead of me so I needed to have her share with my readers the importance of having Periscope as part of their blog and/or business for more exposure.

When I see a good thing, I always share it with my readers. Now it might not be for everyone, but for those who will choose this as part of their business strategy it is amazing. And why not be on the leading edge? It is owned by Twitter, so I do predict it is going to be around for a long time.

Periscope is changing every day…they are constantly updating it so that it is not only smartphone accessible but also one can follow it on their computers.

Mark, I shall work up the courage to do that Scope again, just for you. There is a school of thought that in your Scoping Editorial Calendar, that you should Scope the same topic over the course of a week, so that you can solidify your expertise and maximise the amount of people see that. That of course, sounds like a lot of hard work to me!

    Hi Sarah and Donna

This is the biggest wonder of technology era that any kind of new digital invention gets popular so massively in quite short time as we can see Periscope as talk of the two.

Live streaming is a great benefit of this App and that’s the real test of online marketers to perform on the spot and get feedback then and there.

I love your suggestion of having sense of humor while dealing with the mistakes and instead of trying to be a perfectionist one needs to learn from the mistakes and keep improving.

Connectivity the real challenge in every online field and having more than several sources to stay in touch with the customers is a great blessing so this is a great addition in the list.

The first requirement to work effectively with it is really wonderful as you pointed in the post and without it one can never do anything remarkable be it periscope or any other thing to do.
Thanks a lot for sharing this very informative post.

Have a nice rest of the week.

      Hi Mi,

I am finding this technology amazing. Indeed, live streaming is a real test of online marketers to perform right on the spot, get feedback and answer questions people have. It is quick and one has to be ready to engage with others immediately.

Being real is the most important thing. If you don’t know something…then just say “I don’t know or I’m not sure about that” and continue on.

We have to have a good sense of humor because there will be some interruptions of negativity. Just brush it off our shoulders and carry on.

So happy you liked Sarah’s wise words.

Good to know you have set up your account and have your name on Periscope. Just remember that each time we do something new it takes courage.

You can always start by doing something short and have notes ready to stay on point. Once you get going you can point it at your blog or wherever you want.

As for courage….I still get nervous and I have done many webinars, and videos. Video products too. But there is always that moment of “stage fright” It does go away once you start talking lol.

Helpful post – thanks so much Sarah. And thanks Donna for introducing Sarah to us!

I can understand that many people would find it daunting to do a Scope. Bit scary if you’ve had no prior experience talking in front of a cam LIVE!

Your tips are helpful to say the least although I do question the long time viability of Periscope. Part of me says it’s a fad and will fade, perhaps very soon. Am I right, or am I looking at it the wrong way?

      Hi Kim,

Because Periscope is Titter’s baby, it is new and growing each day. To me it’s like Googles’ hangouts. Very useful and it is there for a long time now.

Once doing a scope, it can be downloaded to Youtube and then you can place it wherever you want…on your blog, or social media sites because a scope will only stay up for 24 hours.

Right now only 1% of people are using it as a tool. The rest are “watchers” If it suits your business or blog plan, it is a great way to get more exposure and new “friends.”

Courage is right though, you definitely have to be very self confident and have that sense of humor you mention to make this work, even or be brave enough to try it. I’m sure once you have done it a few times, it’ll be a breeze. Just getting pay those first few awkward ones. 🙂

      Hi Susan,

When it comes to courage, it is just a matter of getting out there and doing it. In my previous post I showed my first scope where I was just introducing myself. I had no idea what to talk about, so I said a friendly hello to folks.

Then I put my thinking cap on and started to plan a strategy. I would say a good way to go is to use one of your blog posts as a guideline to talk about something. If not…write notes so it keeps you on point. Those little pop ups of people joining will disturb your focus he he he….but it is a great way to get people to your blog or anything else you want.

There are always trolls around. I have a guy right now on Google+ that I let slide from rude remarks once. I just deleted the comment. He poses himself as an American Soldier. I know darn well he is not. So Yesterday after he sent me a horrid message with explicit sex, I just went off to block and report him.

It’s good to know you don’t get many requests like that Sarah. I agree with Donna, you handled it very well. I can imagine it would make me nervous and it would definitley show. on my presentation 🙂

And Sarah, some of the places you mentioned in your Periscope video, I have no idea where those folks are located so I’ll need to brush up on my geography too :).

Thank you again ladies. I’m going to give it some serious thought keeping in mind what you said Donna, that I shouldn’t let those trolls stop me.

    Hey Sarah,

You also wrote a post on periscope on your blog a month or two back. I told myself I was going to check it out, but haven’t put the energy into it.

Although I’ve made a couple of videos I did come to the conclusion that I’m not a camera person. At least not like those that just love doing videos. I guess that’s the introvert in me, but then again there’s quite of few introverts that love being on camera.

But what I’m at least going to do is install the app and check out the features. That would be a good start and maybe it’ll grow on me.

Thanks for sharing Sarah and thanks Donna for having her as your guest!

      Sherman!

It is one of those things lol. If you are not a camera person that’s fine. There are many ways to do videos.

With Periscope, you can point your camera at something like nature and talk about something you want to. I know you have mentioned many times you are an introvert. But also take into consideration other forms of video you can use beside periscope.

If you wanted to do a video on something, you can use a screen share as a tutorial, then post it to Youtube. Remember Youtube is a great place where people search lol.

But getting back to periscope…good to know you will install the app. You will see that there are many people out there that are jumping on with useless information and I think that will help you out.

You can do it if you choose!

Hey Sarah, good to see you over here at Donna’s. Love what she shares so I’m glad you’re contributing to help her readers with this topic.

I know Donna recently got on Periscope and has done a few live chats now. I’ve seen your shares about what you’ve put out but to be honest with you I haven’t had time to watch any of them. I’m not an active cell user, my bad I know… I’m online all day long so trying every new thing that comes out would really just zap my time so it’s not something I’ve even considered yet. Heck, I haven’t even done a lot of the other methods that would help me and yes, shame on me. I know, you don’t have to scold me cause I do that myself plenty enough.

I just have to start mapping out more methods to get my content out there but with the clients I have and still being a one woman show it’s just hard to fit it all in.

I appreciate though you sharing this with us and we definitely need to listen to you. You really do know how to market so thanks for going through these steps with us.

Good to see both you ladies and I hope that your week has started off good. Have a terrific week and I’m off to share this post now.

I know you are not an active cell user and also know you are totally focused on your business. It does take time to watch a scope and girl, I do know what you mean. There is so many hours in a day to do our DMO (daily motion operation) And you have to stay on track. We all do.

When I first heard of Periscope I thought it would be a shiny object but then, because part of my business plan is to put up one video per day it was a great fit for me and my business strategy.

I know you are a one woman show, and I am fortunate to be able to have David working with me. I don’t think I would ever see him on the scope lol. He does all the technical stuff and other things while I do the social part.

Last week I met with nearly 20 entrepreneurs in Washington DC with businesses ranging from $15 – $50 million in annual revenue and they said what everyone of them in my audience has said to me at this point; They don’t have time for something like that.

So, I’m wading carefully because while they like video they won’t be on Periscope. However, I still can see the tool being profitable for other types of online businesses / entrepreneurs and the ability to shoot quickly and post to YouTube is really valuable to me.

For strategic reasons, I’m going to continue to play with this tool and figure out how to leverage it.

Great post Sarah! I so appreciate your insights!!!!!

Hi Don, businesses go where the audience is. You Tube is second biggest “search” engine, but Twitter itself is no slouch when it comes to search, within excess of 25 billion searchs per month (2012 statistic, source I can’t immediately recall).
Periscope and Twitter go together hand in hand, and that means your business will be found for keywords in real time search.
If you’ve products to demo, then you need to be doing this and interacting with the audience, and this is why social media is a great leveller. That a small business is now on par with a big business in terms of connecting with their audience.

        Hi Sarah,

Just playing devil’s advocate for second… the video only appears for 24 hours as a replay. For the majority of business owners and entrepreneur’s they are busy being busy (lol… I love that term) which means they are not focusing on another “thing” that they have to do right now when they are in sales meetings, team meetings, networking meetings, reviewing data or putting out a fire of some kind.

I network mostly offline businesses and their #1 concern (which I wrote about today) is making the time for everything they have to do. I get it…

Online businesses will have a much easier effect and time with this tool than the offline ones will so speaking to them will be a lot of fun.

So, back to my original point. I get it and I see a usefulness for the tool and I will absolutely be on it as I learn how my specific audience will engage with it or is it best used for quick videos that go to YouTube and be re-purposed for other means.

        Love your post Sarah!

          Hi Don,

I’m finding Periscope great for immediate interaction and also for meeting new people. In one week’s time, I’ve engaged with a few folks because they were interested in what I do. We took the conversation over to email and phone.

In my own business plan, I need to do a video a day….I was doing a 2 minute one and posting on my FB Page.

Now With Periscope, I do download it to Youtube for search results. I can even link it to my blog or an older blog post….seeing action there already lol.

Great to know you liked Sarah’s post!

With pleasure Don, and I’ll play it right back… There are more to a company than it’s bosses. These are the people that can Scope. A receptionist sharing how they welcome people to the business, the office admin showing how they look after their customers, customer services showing how the product can be used and how they help people, and of course this is all repurposable.
And if the CEO wants to show their office every now and then, they can, but they are not the people that need to perform the Scopes, they’re not the only person to that loves the business 😉

            Hi Sarah,

I hear what you’re saying; but I’m talking every day with offline companies up to a $100 million in annual revenue and their mindset is completely different than ours who spend a lot of time online. They have to be worked into these things if it makes sense for them to do as a strategy.

They don’t understand things we see as basic such as blogging, networking through a blog and social media, or how content marketing in general is replacing mass marketing. They are just frustrated that they post and nothing happens.

It really is overwhelming to them. Thursday at my presentation in Washington D.C. many acknowledged they understand but felt because it’s so foreign to them they were swimming.

I agree, there are some in the business who can take the mantle but a business owner still has to be careful there. I’ve seen that backfire many times because the owner went hands off.

I was recently at a local chamber of commerce meeting the other week and what they were teaching businesses was antiquated online marketing. I was so surprised and shocked to tell you the truth.

In many cases, the consumers are WAY ahead of the businesses who are overwhelmed and don’t have a clue what’s going on outside of their four walls. I know, it’s a problem and one I’m fighting hard to solve.

I so appreciate your back and forth and what I love about this conversation is that it shows no right or wrong; just different audiences, approaches and ideas about who they are and what/when they need the information.

Donna’s audience is perfect for your topic of which you did an INCREDIBLE job explaining Periscope.

Okay Don, you win. This isn’t right for your clients and even though big brands like Pepsi and others are using Periscope to great effect, your clients should stay away from it as so much can go wrong, and that outweighs all the good they can do 😀

[ Smiles ] Come on, do I really need a smartphone in order to use Periscope?

Anyway, I happen to own an Android smartphone; which would come in very handy if it is mandatory to have a smartphone in order to use Periscope (Forgive me, this is the second time that I am hearing about it).

And, being a blogger, I am very grateful for any additional medium to promote my blog.

    Hi Donna, Hi Sarah,

    Thanks for this.

I had wanted to get into some sort of video blogging a few years ago. I recorded one video (which I practiced for about 14 times) and that was about it 😉

I do, however, have a desire to step out of my comfort zone, especially if it means I have an additional avenue to reach people…so I’ll have to look into this.

Before leaving a comment here, I went back and read the previous post and watched your video Donna. You seemed totally at ease…and I loved the path you were on. It was nice to see you in an environment that was so tranquil…and since I have places like this to go to (and a phone with a video recorder)…this may be a way to go about it.

I’ll have to learn more, but I am intrigued. Thank-you Sarah for the additional info here – and I wish you both a beautiful week.

      Hi Dana,

I remember when I did my first video. All with make up and hair done…totally frightened. I did a 30 day challenge. And guess what happened? Half way through, I had no make up on, talked with ease and wasn’t a bit nervous.

Doing something new is always difficult. Yes, I seemed at ease in my previous video but I was scared. Thank God only 7 people were watching. I had no idea what to do or say…I just was me.

Periscope is a new platform and there are many out there that are unscripted because it is a social platform it is all about talking about a topic that IS unscripted. Think of a reality show. lol

Give it a try…You have a wonderful journey that you could share. Eventually people will follow you.

      Hey Dan,

At first there won’t be people there until you do it every day. To promote your periscope you can tweet it out and share it on Facebook.

Choose a time of day that suits you and prepare your followers by telling them “I’ll be doing a scope on xxx) Email, Twitter, Facebok.

Then when you are actually broadcasting, slide your screen on your phone to “Share” with these social sites and you will get a response.

It will take time like anything else. Think of your first blog post Dan. After a while, you build a following. And by the way, the scope will be there for 24 hours so that you can again tell your followers to catch the replay.

As Donna says Dan, you can point the camera at the screen and talk. However, this is a new tool, and we’re all learning together. You’ll get early adopter advantage! and by the time it’s mainstream, you’ll be awesome and wondering why you were so nervous.

      Hi Dan,

If you are not comfortable on camera, you can always point your camera to something else. I’ve seen some scopes whereby the person was pointing it to a white board and explaining something.

He did quite well and I did learn a lot from his scope. But getting in front of a camera is important for the Know, like and trust factor.

Dan, I’ve interviewed some guru’s in my day and they were not comfortable at all. So you are not alone. It does take practice. I was terrified when I did my first Youtube video back in the day. But I put myself through a 30 day challenge. The first five were terrible. Then, as time went by, it got easier.

I like how you embedded a scope in your post so readers can see the bonus content. Offering bonus content or content upgrade is a great way to increase your subscribers.

I have to admit to being a little slow adapting to technology even though the benefits are apparent.

Great overview and advice on Periscope! I appreciate all of your advice Sarah but gotta say my favorite tip is “The ability to talk on screen… and not pass out.”

      Hi Marquita,

Oh that talking on screen and not passing out lol. When I did my first ones, no one was there so it was quite easy to do…like a Youtube video.

I’m used to doing digital products so I’m pretty comfortable on screen. But once those tiny pop ups came up with people watching, I couldn’t see them properly – Even with my glasses on!

But think of this: You can always go by some beautiful place where you live and click the camera around to water or anything while you give an inspirational message…which you are so good at.

Then, download it to Youtube, after that spread it around social sites. Just an idea lol
