The Road To Periscope

This post was most recently updated on July 31st, 2016

Road To PeriscopeWalk with me, on “the road to Periscope” today.

On a recent call with one of my mentors, it was suggested to me that Periscope is a great way of connecting to people.

Now you know me my dear friends, and I love to make connections with others.

So I went on my way to find out what Periscope was all about, and how I could use it to connect better with you.

I first Google searched Periscope and there it was on the first page of the results.

Somebody had Google+ shared a blog post about her first Periscope.

So I checked it out and there it was… the open door to give me the confidence I needed on the road to Periscope.

The blog post talked a bit about Periscope.

What I really like was that the blogger shared her very first Periscope introducing herself as she walked around her wonderful yard, with her swimming pool and the cutest dog in the background.

Of course, I was attracted to that.

Being a good blogger, I left a comment introducing myself and told her how I got there.

When I leave a comment I do like to connect with people on the social platforms, so we connected.

Ah, a new friend!

But more than that, I am very grateful because seeing someone do something for the first time is always a confidence booster.

I was all excited… but wait!

“How Can I Scope?”

How do I actually do this “scope” thing?

As with most things in life, the best way to get wet is to jump in the water.

I downloaded the Periscope app from Twitter onto my iPhone.

Then I synced it with my Twitter app and I was ready to go!

It’s funny, too, because I used to be one of those people who hear about something, and for 6 months think, “I’ve got to give that a try.

But, somehow, it never seems to happen.

I’ve really trained myself to stop procrastinating, give something a try immediately, and if it’s not something I like… I move on.

At least I can say I tried it and I know how it works, instead of always thinking in the back of my mind “I should try that… one day.”

Now that I’m all set up and ready to go, the questions, stutters and wondering “ifs” are behind me, and I’m excited to dig in.

So, without further adieu, here is my very first Periscope. (It’s under 1 and a half minutes… nothing planned, just off the hip saying “hi” to people and showing off my new skill!)

I wanted to share this with you so that you, too, can get up the confidence to walk with me, on “the road to Periscope” today.

Notice that I was moving around and the scope came out terrible.

It was a hot day and all the lighting was off until I found some shade.

Never move your camera like this lol. It comes out much clearer if you stand in one place.

But, hey, we all have to start somewhere.

For me, this was step one.

So know this, my dear friends.

I had the same feeling as when I posted my very first blog post.

Confused, stunned, but I went forth and did it anyway.

That’s how I learn best… by simply doing something.

How about you?

What’s In It For You?

Now you may be asking yourself “What’s In It For Me?”

Actually, there’s a few things that are really cool, and powerful.

Connections with others.

Firstly, understand that your scope will be up for 24 hours for others to share.

You can always download it and keep it for yourself, but within that 24 hour period if someone misses it, they can go back and watch it. The only thing they cannot do is interact.

When you are on Periscope other random people jump in.

They send you messages while you are talking.

So you’ll find yourself saying “Hi” to whoever happens to be watching.

I always say that a “video is like a virtual handshake” but this IS way more than that. It is an immediate connection, and you can talk to people right then and there, whenever you want. And they can talk to you by typing in the chat box.

You also get immediate “like” feedback.

It comes in the form of “hearts” that float onto your cellphone screen as you talk.

When people like what you’re saying, the can simply tap on their screen.

Tapping their screen will send hearts out to you in real time, as you are talking. It is like saying “yes yes yes.”

The more hearts the better.

Remember this when you are watching somebody else’s scope, and you find something valuable. Tap away and give that person hearts so they know you’re appreciating it.

Your Blog Is A Sales Funnel

Sharing.

This community shares like crazy.

You can be watching a scope and share it immediately on Twitter.

Within the few days since I’ve joined Periscope, I get notifications on my phone to “watch this scope about xyz or that one about abc.”

If you get notified of an interesting scope, you can either dive in live and instantly, or catch the replay.

If you like it, you can then send a notification for your crowd to check it out.

Very viral!

Using Periscope for your business.

Like any other social platform… BE SOCIAL when you’re on Periscope.

If people are attracted to you they will follow you and you can notify your followers that you will be doing a scope on a specific topic.

Always give good content as you would on a video or anywhere else.

Periscope is like getting friends and followers on high speed.

I’ve been watching it closely and have found some pretty amazing people giving great value.

Wouldn’t you like to be one of them?

As you are using Periscope, you are branding yourself for your blog, or other online business.

Brand, don’t sell, of course. Just like on any social media sites.

I did see some scopes to “join my business” and, of course, I ignored them. I know… some people just never learn, lol (and floating hearts).

There are many people on Periscope, but a very small percentage that are actually presenting scopes.

The rest are “watchers.”

So wouldn’t it be wonderful to get on the leading edge and start branding yourself while building your online business on this new platform?

I encourage you to take a look at Kevin’s FREE Webinar that I linked to above, so you can get a better understanding of how, exactly, Periscope works.

Your Blog Is A Sales Funnel

When you get on Periscope, connect with me at “Donna Merrill”.

I’ll be scoping starting sometime this week, and will let you know how it’s going.

Meanwhile… I encourage you to put on your thinking cap.

How can you use Periscope to help build your own business or blog?

Leave me a comment below with your thoughts on that.

Walk with me, on “the road to Periscope” today.

    Hey Donna,

Really great post here on the topic of Periscope.

I’ve Joined periscope and have watched many individuals, including yourself, do and use periscope so effortlessly.

It really is a great tool to help connect with readers followers just individuals in general and it’s something that I look forward to taking advantage of in the near future.

    Great post here, Donna.

      Hi Andrew,

Why thank you for watching some of my “scopes” It is a great way to get yourself to do at least one little video a day. It can be also repurposed to download on Youtube, or put into a blog post.

We can also share them on our social sites. I’ll tell you since I’ve been doing them, it has increased my conversion rate in a quick time.

    Hey, Donna,

Great job on your first scope!

Absolutely! Connecting with others is essential in order to succeed in what we do, and Periscope is sure a fun way to do that. 🙂

Now there are a lot of spin offs as well. I got in it pretty early on, did one scope so far to test it out.

May do more when my big projects are finished. One of my goals was to start a podcast before the end of the year, and I’m a little behind schedule with that one. LOL It’s been on the back burner for too long.

I’ll try to catch one of your scopes – just added you. You can add me back, if you like: Carol Amato.

Thanks for this cool insight on Periscope, love it!

    Have a blessed weekend.

      Hi Carol,

I’m finding the connection with others using Periscope now for a few weeks is so quick, it amazes me. I can do a scope on a particular subject, and people start connecting with me on social sites. Within a few weeks even my opt-in rate has gone sky high. Go figure?

As with anything, using it wisely as an extension for our business is great to do. I don’t sell anything, but raise questions and have created a pretty good following so far.

After you finished your projects come on and jump in. It is quite fun to do also..

Trying to focus on certain social media sites without spreading my efforts too thin. Will be interesting to see how quickly people catch on to this one.

I do see that we are connected on Periscope. It is a good thing to plan a strategy before you start scoping. I know it will help your branding efforts. You are great in front of the camera girl!

Courage….It does take courage to do new things. But if it is a benefit to your business, I’m sure you will summon up the courage to do so.

    LOL Donna,
    LOVE it ..
I’ve been watching others “scope” and it’s been interesting … because it’s live you can walk into .. or rather your eyeballs can walk into some crazy stuff. Like I “rode” on the back of a motorcycle in New York City. This couple was going apartment hunting and I got to see this tiny apt. in Manhattan plus hear about their personal lives … … I started thinking – how weird is this .. peeking into someone’s life like this .. and the hearts were floating up the right side of the screen. There I was trying figure out how to get the hearts going and I was tapping everywhere else on my phone except for the screen .. look out it’s a human loose in “scopeville”… it has its benefits.. and because it’s “live” you can make some great connections. I know you’ll have fun with this .. I’ll be doing this sometime down the road … 🙂

I haven’t played around with watching people doing stuff other than marketing and blogging. However, David was waiting for me while I was in a store and he did. Like any other social site, there will be those thrills, chills, and of course our share of trolls.

But when using Periscope for business it is just like any other platform.

      Hi Brent,

Part of my business plan is to do videos every day. I usually do them in “chunks” put them on Youtube and sometimes create a Youtube card to attach to a blog.

Now with Periscope, only a few days in, I’m making connections like crazy. People are asking me what do you do? And so much more. Already I’ve been asked to do a show with a major marketer late this month.

As with any platform, we need to have a plan that aligns with our business. This is one that has worked so far. The more I’m doing, the better the following. Considering only one percent of users are scoping, the rest are “watchers”

What a great tool to build a brand and gain trust and of course, create that list and opt ins!

Good to know you are on the Scope! It sure is a great way to humanize our brand. As people see us on Periscope they can get a better insight to who we are. The Know Like and Trust factor comes across so well as we are doing a scope.

This one I put here was my first and I had no idea what I was doing. All I needed was to start. So I started with that virtual hand shake saying HI. I’ve come a long way in a few days and met so many people.

      It is starting to grow!

Thanks for sharing this with us! I hope you’re having a great week!

      Hi Cori,

I jumped into Periscope because it is like being on a Google hangout on speed. There are many “watchers” out there, waiting to take the plunge.

In this first one, I didn’t put a title on it but just said HI! My second one was about blogging and the law of reciprocity. Yes, I was scared because it is new and that is why I’m sharing my journey here. To help others.

Within a few days I have made more connections with people than ever. Twitter owns Periscope so I get messages from those who liked a scope and now we are communicating.

You know me well and I don’t pitch. So people feel comfortable asking me what I do. I give them my information, they give me theirs. It is amazing.

The best part is people share your scopes on twitter like crazy as you are doing them. I have more targeted twitter peeps than ever in just a few days! Woo Hoo

The thing is, I have to do one a day otherwise it doesn’t work. I have Sarah doing a guest post next Monday. She has been a great connection for me because she shares my content and her friends trust her thereby trusting me. Phew……

    Hi Donna

For some time, I have been seeing lots of post about Periscope. Last week, I saw so many bloggers talk about how much Periscope is changing social connections.

So seeing you talk about Periscope means that it is time for me to look at this platform more closely. I love your video and thanks for the tips on how to create a cool scope.

    Thanks for sharing. Take Care

      Hi Ikechi,

Periscope is new. They are making changes as I write this. The first scope I made (the one above) was a test. Now…a few days into it, I’m making friends and connections like wildfire.

Just choose a topic you want to talk about and people start jumping in….they will say hi, some will follow you. But as with any social platform, there are trolls out there. It was distracting at first when I did a scope on Reciprocity and your Blog. But I did make 3 very close connections from that.

Check out the pitch free webinar that Kevin Arrow has done to give you a good idea. Then stay tuned for my next blog post 🙂

    Hi Donna,

I hope you enjoyed the holiday weekend!

I actually never heard of this. I guess a good way to use it for business is to do a scope on what you’re doing to grow it or operate.

This is an interesting concept and made even more so to see how different people will end up using it.

    Have a good night.

      Hi Lea,

I’m a newbie at Periscope, but started doing one a day. It is a must to keep that schedule up if we ever want it to work for us.

Within a few days, I have made so many connections with others. I’ve never experienced connecting so quickly!

This is the start of my journey and as just a few trickled in so far, they have connected with me on many levels.

I do see the effect it can have on our blogs and products/services.

    Hi Donna,

I just started a few weeks before our move last month and I LOVED it! I will definitely be using it a lot more moving forward and experimenting with it.

I loved how almost immediately there were over 50 people watching and “hearting” my first one. I didn’t even try to connect with anyone.

What will be interesting is determining over the coming months if this is a resource that business in my audience will employ? As you know, it doesn’t make sense to do something if that’s not where the audience is at.

I appreciate your insights and sharing your experience on Periscope. Love it when you do video!!!!

      Hi Don,

I’ll connect with you on the “scope” lol. I’m a newbie and found it to be great to use as a part of my business. Yes…love the hearts and questions popping up. It is like doing a webinar on speed!

Because I do videos so much, I just figured I can download my scope and share it where it is appropriate. On my FB page, it can get pretty active, so I’m experimenting to see if it will catch on there.

Meanwhile…as with anything else..I’m testing. I’m finding many new connections already and have had conversations from a scope with others.

It is quite amazing how the technology works. They are still new and will be changing things up.

    Hey Donna,

Good for you and I’ve heard a lot about Periscope.

I’m not on that platform, I’m not a big cell user as you know but I also don’t want to get on too many different things that I can’t really keep up with.

As they’ve always said, stick with a few social media sites at a time and then when you have those down you can move to more. My issue is that I can only do so much with the time I have and although I know I need to be on more platforms I just can’t keep up with them all.

I’m thrilled for you though and enjoyed your video. That trail looks nice and of course so do you.

Thanks for sharing this with us my dear and have fun on Periscope.

      Hi Adrienne,

Indeed, I am of the same school of thought. I am only on 2 social media platforms every day. I got it down an doing great on them.

Then periscope came along and because I do so many videos these days, I found it a great tool to use, not only to connect with more people, but to use the scopes in those 2 main platforms I use and of course, on my blog if it is appropriate.

I know how you feel about phones..lol. I remember when we met up on G+ and I swore I would NEVER get into it. But here I am…using it all the time. Never say never lol.

Wow, I can always count on you to learn about new tools and stuff 🙂

Never heard of Periscope before, but now I want to use it too.

As I was reading your post I was thinking on how I could do that walking around the huge Estate I live in right now LOL!

I will definitely check that out and share this in the meantime, so more people can learn about Periscope.

Thanks and have a great day!

      Hi Sylviane,

It is a very cool tool to use. It is real time technology that people connect with. I am sure it will be a good fit with the beautiful places you are in.

A great branding mechanism and also making friends in moments. It amazes me! Although I’m new at it, check out Kevin’s free webinar. I learned so much from that.

There will be so much more in my next post with a special guest to teach others better than I can at the moment.

    Hi Donna! Happy Labor Day!

I’m very intrigued by Periscope and loved your video so I went to investigate a bit more about Periscope. Unfortunately, at this time it’s only available on Apple which leaves me out. But I am anxious for it to come to Android so I can give it a quick shout!

Thanks for sharing it with us. I hope you had a great holiday!

      Hi Brenda,

Periscope is available on Android as well as Apple. Did you click the FREE No Pitch Webinar that Kevin Arrow made? You can get a better understanding there.

It’s pretty new and most people are “watchers” but if we get into this soon, we can be on the leading edge of this amazing technology.

Let me know if you have any questions…

    Hey Donna,

Your first “Scope” was great. Believe it or not I thought about doing one yesterday while we were out and about but there were so many people around and it was so noisy that I decided to wait until another time.

I have some ideas for my first “scope” and I will look you up when I get back on there.

    Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Monna,

My first scope …I was terrified. I felt like it was my first Youtube video lol – But with practice and doing scopes on a particular subject, I find it is like a fast moving interaction with others.

I plan to start tomorrow…still waiting for my Iphone holder to come in the mail but will rig up something to hold my phone up.

Can’t wait to see you there!

Really interesting Donna. I’ve seen a lot of comments about Periscope but few talking about results – it seems like a video version of a selfie. I also know Sarah and have taken a couple of her courses so I’ll take a look at what she’s doing. Always good to keep up with the latest technology so thanks!

      Hi Marquita,

It sure is always good to keep up with the latest technology! Not really like a selfie.. more like a mini webinar. People ask questions as we are speaking. Of course, this one of mine was just to inspire others that they can do it too…

But when we are Periscope and have some message that we want to talk about 20-30 minutes or less can do the trick. It is a nice way to reach your community as well as spreading out to new communities.
