Does Story Telling Work On Your Blog?

This post was most recently updated on August 1st, 2016

Story Telling Blogs

A few weeks ago, I wrote a story on my blog to make a point.

It was a bit like a fable, as I had a definite moral to communicate, and my readers loved it so much.  They asked if the story was true.  Were the people in the story real or just characters made up?  Some asked “for the rest of the story.”

It was clear that my little story did get people engaged in my topic.  I saw how well this worked and concluded that story telling is a very effective way to communicate on our blogs.

So, I looked around to see who else I know that uses story successfully.

I immediately thought of my blogging buddy Ryan Biddulph.  He always tells stories on his blog.

Now I have to say that if you know Ryan Biddulph, you know he always has a good story to tell.  Heck, he travels all over the place, “blogging from Paradise” and introducing us to the many exotic places he stays at.

Ryan has authored many books.  I cannot give you a number, here, because he writes them so quickly it boggles my mind.

But do check him out if you haven’t before.  I think his blog will give you some good ideas.  Besides writing stories, he also gives great blogging, marketing and self development advice.

Questions To Consider

So, I’ve definitely concluded that story telling is a good blogging method.

But should everyone use this method?

Is it good for any niche?

Story Telling Blogs

I don’t know that everyone can pull off story telling on their blogs in order to communicate a message.

Now if you are a writer and frequently write in story form, that’s awesome.

But what about the less literary blogger who focuses on marketing, or something else that is more instructive than conversational?

And if we’re going to incorporate stories into our blog posts, should we always write in this way?

Will it get played out or will it build momentum, increasingly drawing people into the conversations you open with your stories?

Also, if story telling does not come naturally to you, yet you’d like to start using it, or at least experimenting with it, what’s a good way to learn the craft?

Those are some of the questions I’ve come up with.

Special:  My Free Gift To You!  I Show You How To Build An Amazing Email List

But here are more…

Have you ever read a blog with story-telling content?

Did you learn something from the story?

Was the story in the post congruent with the brand/message of the blog or did it seem to pose a disconnect?

Would you like to read a blog that is a mix of story telling, and other forms of context?

Do you find story telling boring or intriguing?

If you read my recent story post, what was the feeling you had after you read the story?

Blogger's Grave

Do you know how to write stories?

Would you like me to develop some content to show you how to write and use stories?

Anything else you can think of?

Your Blog Is A Sales Funnel

Now, here is what we are going to do boys and girls.  Since this post is for YOU, I would like you to give answers to some of these questions in the comment section below.

Just be honest and give me some of your immediate reactions.

Let’s have a bit of fun, and see how this one works out.

    Hi Donna,

Really enjoyed your Halloween story – and, yes, I do enjoy reading stories in blog posts because it makes me feel a stronger connection with the author.

When writing, I enjoy a story format too. My most recent post is a product testimonial, so that’s a kind of story too.

I suppose the one virtue of getting older is that I have accumulated quite a fund of stories that just naturally come to mind when I’m writing on my blog. The boys have heard them all before, so my blog readers are whole new audience and if they fall asleep half way through … I’ll never know!

Carry on the good work with your stories, please.

I do enjoy a story especially in a product testimonial.

Goodness, when am I not telling some kind of story? With most of my writings, I try to add a personal touch because it’s a style I’m comfortable with. Even with training material, I feel that if one can incorporate a storytelling aspect to it that things work out better for the reader.

    Hey Donna,

I think story telling is a great way to pass over lessons. I also use story telling when I disagree with someone or am trying to make a point. It works so much better than saying, ‘I disagree’ or ‘you are wrong’ (which seems to stop a person from listening). Stories allow others to make up their own mind about the lesson.

I like to tell a story with the motivation to get people’s imaginations working (form pictures in their minds) and then I go in and leave an explanation or make points.

Thanks for the food for thought.

    Rachel.

      Hi Rachel,

Indeed, stories do allow others to make up their own mind about the lesson and that what is so effective.

A good story with motivation can get deep into someone’s mind and they in turn can learn something very valuable.

    Wow, Donna!

This is one of my fav topics (I also wrote about it recently)

Using stories to persuade is a time-honored strategy that all great marketers use regularly.

One of my early mentors drummed it into me more than 20 years ago. He said this: ‘don’t sell, tell stories instead’. He then went on to demonstrate the technique by taking me out on sales calls.

I was gobsmacked by his ability to skillfully weave different storyline threads into the sales narrative. Needless to say, he had people eating out of the palm of his hand – and more often than not they became clients.

There – I just told a story! How hard is that? It’s not. You don’t have to be a literary genius to inspire and motivate people with congruent, relevant stories

    Thanks Donna – nice post!

You are a genius when it comes to stories. You just did one in this comment lol. I read your last post and replied to you that every blogger and marketer needs to read it.

You went into great length about story telling and oh so true!

I do agree with you that one doesn’t have to be a literary genius to inspire and motivate others. I love the quote: “Don’t sell….Tell stories instead!” You just inspired me

    Hi Donna,
I absolutely loved the story you told in your post; The Bloggers Grave.

To answer some of your questions…

Have you ever read a blog with story-telling content? Yes I have and I find that I can stay focused on a blog that is written in story form.

Did you learn something from the story? I was entertained, so therefore, yes, I did learn from reading a story kind of post.

Do you find story-telling boring or intriguing? Story-telling always intrigues me. I’m amazed at how well some writers can just pull you right into their world and you really don’t notice it at first.

If you read my recent story post, what was the feeling you had after you read the story? I’m one of the ones that wanted to know what was next. You have a way with story-telling.

Do you know how to write stories? I believe I do and of course some are better than others.

Would you like me to develop some content to show you how to write and use stories? I would love to see how you do it.

Anything else you can think of? I’ll be looking for your next story-telling post.

I do hope you are feeling much, much better. <3 🙂

    Hi Donna,

First I’d like to tell you how sorry I am for misspelling your last name on Google plus while promoting you. I left out one of the r in Merrill.

Love this article on storytelling. Ryan has everyone beat. He takes us to so many beautiful places and he’s an expert in describing them. We feel like we are right there with him and Kelly.

I enjoy storytelling when someone else is doing it and I might give it a try.

I don’t know how many people have heard about the holocaust survivor’s and the stories they have shared. Storytelling is an art and it is a dying breed for those survivor’s. They are dying off. I was lucky to know a few and some of them had tattoo’s. I knew a survivor named Morris and the way he told a story was an art. He passed away about two years ago and his stories were passed down to his children and his grandchildren by word of mouth.

I think I might give it a try.

Thank you for sharing, Donna and you have an awesome weekend!

      Hi Linda,

I too remember holocaust survivors – tattoos and all. I heard their stories and American soldiers during that time were members of my family. These stories must be kept sacred and I do feel it is a great way to keep our history straight!

We, the people who have known these great survivors need to tell their story. I think it is a great idea. It can be tied in with self development, personal growth and so on. Against all odds, these survivors did survive and so can anyone else in any situation. Go for it!

So glad to see you’re back at it and giving us some great ideas to think about!

Storytelling… It’s a powerful medium and I really loved the way you did it in the article you wrote several weeks ago and referenced in your post.

I agree, Ryan does a great job of pulling us in through stories and helping us see a glimpse into both his life, world and he provides some great value at the same time.

I think stories and how we each tell them are informed a lot by our personalities, experiences and training. It’s both an art and a science at the same time and the most powerful understand both sides and how to use them effectively.

I appreciate your insights and you are an extremely gifted storyteller.

I appreciate all you do and the ideas you share Donna.

    Have a great weekend!

      Hi Don,

Yes..a story is a combination of art and science. If we can reach that level of writing, I’m sure it will be a piece that is read from beginning to end.

I’m not as talented as that..but getting there lol. I did get a good response on the last story I told. You cannot believe the messages I received privately…..Is that real or just made up? Ha Ha I’ll never tell.

If we can capture someone’s attention with a story, I do believe it can stick in their minds more than anything.

    Hi Donna,

Long time since I came here! I just got off Sherman Smith’s blog where his guest Tom did an awesome post that spoke directly to me!

Wow! I so much like your writing style these days, they are simple, direct and wonderful. I was just reading and relating the article with some work I have read online. The truth is this – story telling is great only when it leads to undeniable facts for which the subject is being told.

I love reading stories and when I see a post with one, I stick to it. In my own opinion, posts with figures and direct messages should at some point be related to a story. I like the part of an article where I have to read a touching story and then move on to read fact in it.

Again, Donna, this article is awesome, thanks for sharing!

I’m sorry to learn about your accident and hope you’re feeling better. I’m sorry I hadn’t told you or been by sooner. I’ve been offline for some time and catching up on my reads and making my way back to the socialverse.

I think folks relate more to us when we share a story, especially if they can relate. And as long as the story is well-written and flows naturally, I think it can be done in any niche. Ryan is amazing at that and if anyone wants to learn how to, a good way to start would be to read his blog posts.

I’ve incorporated that in a couple my blog posts and I did get more reaction from it so I plan on keeping with that writing style and learn how to get better at it. 🙂

I have to go back and read The Bloggers Grave, I’m sure it will be a good one :).

Story telling is fun to read and so much fun to write. Indeed, it does take a bit of practice, but once you put it out there, it is surprising how many people enjoy it. We don’t have to be professionals at it, just write something we want to share either personal or fictional. I like to use experiences my clients have and of course never name them!

I do find it resonates so well with others.

    Hi Donna.

Glad you are back on your feet. Another great post.

When I started my blog, I was writing about myself, but wasn’t
really giving any valuable information or lessons.

I did have one post in which I wrote about my childhood, probably
my best at that time, as far as giving something people could use.
It was about my early days learning to play the flute. I don’t
want to be spammy, so I won’t put the link in this comment.

I do believe if you have a story to tell which also teaches a lesson that
can help in that particular niche, to go ahead and tell it. As you and
others have said, people like stories. It shows that we are just like
every other human being, flaws and all. I read one of Ryan Biddulph’s
posts just last night and it got me thinking about something. This post
has also enhanced that thought and I want to get it out there for all to see.

I’m sure that the story about learning how to play the flute had a great influence on the context. Story telling has a funny way of doing that. Especially when we are sharing something that happened in our own lives.

I always like reading stories because they just stick in my head more than facts and figures.

    Hi Donna!

First off I’m glad to read that you’re feeling better.

I do think you and Ryan both have proved that effective story is a fantastic way to engage readers. I really do think that I could recognize both yours and Ryan’s writing from anywhere just because it’s so unique.

That’s another thing I like about stories – their unique factor. Everyone’s story is different. There are only so many ways to share facts, statistics, whatever, but we all have different stories to tell. And if presented effectively, they do such a good job at engaging people that those stories become memorable, and the people behind them become memorable. In a world where we’re competing more than ever for people’s attention, it’s becoming more and more important to become memorable in some way.

Yes, do share with us how you’re able to captivate us so well with the stories you share. I will not be forgetting about the bloggers grave anytime soon!

I just love writing stories. For my blog, perfect match. For other niches stories may not be relevant and in truth, some bloggers are not as drawn toward story telling, which is cool. I am addicted to weaving tales and sharing my experience because it’s fun to me, and since I’m having so much fun I keep telling them.

For a long time I was terrified to tell my story. I felt my story was boring. Yes, even when I was on the road, traveling the world. Then I recounted the crazy stuff I’ve experienced. Had to tell these stories. But honest to goodness, I have crazier tales to tell from my pier guard and modeling and weight lifting and meteorology days….may need to work them into my brand soon 😉

    Thanks again Donna, you rock.

    Hey Donna,

To be honest with you, I would rather read a blog post with a story format than anything. I really don’t like it when a blog is just facts and figures. In all actuality, it tends to bore me. If you use facts or figures, it would make it more interesting if there were more metaphors, similes, hyperboles, or just a quick short story to get your point across.

I was very much able to relate to halloween story you did a week ago. It’s similar to my situation but not as bad as hers. I find that you can get the message across better so that it makes it easier for your audience to engage. With so many twists and turns in stories, why wouldn’t they, right?

Thanks for sharing Donna! Glad that you brought this up!

      Hi Sherman,

Thanks so much for your input here. I too get so bored with facts and figures. Sometimes when I read a blog like that my mind wanders to where they got them from and if there is an opposing stat. Well that’s me…always thinking.

I like story form also because I do learn better from them. Plus it is kinda fun reading them. I’m with you on this all the way!

    Hi Donna,

I’m so, so glad you wrote about this, and it made me want to write about it as well.

    Do you know why?

Because as I was following through Jon Morrow’s tips about guest posting, he made a point to teach that story telling DOESN’T work.

Now, being the Jon Morrow that he is, he’s got some good arguments, but that doesn’t mean that he’s right all the way. And the most interesting of all is that he approached Kevin Duncan to guest post on his own blog, and anyone knowing the writing style of Kevin Duncan is that he’s a great story teller. So, I had to scratch my head and wonder what the heck!

Anyways, you are right, and as they say, the proof is in the podding, you found out by facts that story telling works and so did I.

What people who are saying that story telling won’t work are forgetting about the billion industry that’s called movies and fiction books. Now, don’t tell me that people don’t enjoy a good story. Right?

Thanks so much for writing about this!

      Hi Sylviane,

You sure do raise a good issue. If the story is good and has a message for others to take away and apply, then story telling will work.

It is up to the writer. And as a writer yourself, I can surely see how you can work a story into a blog post with more ease than the average person.

Yes, we do have to consider the billion dollar industry of fiction books, and movies. Great point because people enjoy a good story.

Just think about those tiny stories commercials do. Gee…I wonder why lol!

    Hi, Donna

I love stories; i believe many people do. Stories can touch the inner soul of a person that no other means can do. See the effect of the story on your readers in your post – the bloggers grave.

Seth Godin once said “it is not about what we sell but the story.” In my opinion, story can be used in every niche in some way or another. Of course, the result of the story on the post depends the skill of the blogger.

It is one of my dreams to improve my skill in story telling.

love the questions you put out in the post.

      Hi Stella,

I’m working on it too. I love the way you put it when you wrote that Seth Godin once said “it is not about what we sell but the story.” So true!

Even when looking at a commercial on TV, there is a sixty second story or even a 30 second one. I am practicing 🙂

I always enjoy Ryan’s posts and lately he’s going against the norm and writing really long posts. Even longer than he used to write. His lifestyle is fascinating and captivates imagination and attention. It’s ideal for story telling.

I struggle to think of stories that are relevant to my topics, even though I see the value of them. It’s something I want to work on.

I like your idea of talking about struggles and problems and how you solved them.

    Thanks, Donna

      Hi Sue,

Indeed, Ryan’s posts are getting very long these days. He sure has lots to write about. I guess I would too if I travelled to those exotic places and had experiences like he has.

What is really amazing is that he is writing books like mad.

His stories are so much fun to read. I used him as an example because Ryan can tell a story and tie it into a specific learning curve. What fun!

    Hey Donna,

I personally enjoy the stories that people share in their posts. They seem to draw us in and we’re eager to learn the outcome or the ending. We can relate to those who they’re talking about mostly which is why we find them so entertaining. I do at least.

Not everyone is that talented though but that’s okay. I think in those instances that if you can just possibly share some of your own experiences then that’s almost as good. Mainly because people relate to people and that’s what we’re really trying to accomplish behind this method right!

I thoroughly enjoyed your story as well for Halloween Donna. You did a wonderful job with that and I’m not surprised that you received so much feedback on it.

Story telling is powerful and I say if you can incorporate it into your posts then do it. Probably not every single one but then again you’ll never know how well it works until you test it out right!

Thanks my dear and enjoyed this post. Off to share it with my friends. I’m sure they’ll think the same thing.

      Hi Adrienne,

Thanks for the feedback… I sure appreciate it. When we write in story form..with a little learning curve within I too get pulled into the story to the end. No skimming a post like that lol.

But we can’t do it all the time. Or some cannot do it at all. In this case sharing a personal experience like you mentioned, is a great way to help others.

Especially if we share something we tried, failed and then found “the answer” to. People can receive so much encouragement from that.

    Hey Donna,

Glad to see you back in action! Are you feeling better?

I think storytelling works very well for some niches. It also depends on how well the story is written. I know for a fact, that if it’s something people can relate to on a personal level, they like it that much more. That’s one of the reasons I’m going back to what “was” on MGP. People related more to my most intimate stories than just regular blog posts that were sharing a message.

I would love to read more of your stories!

      Hi Bren,

Yes I am feeling much better thank you.

That is a perfect example for us and I thank you for sharing it. You found that people related more with the stories on MGP than regular blog posts. So now you are going back to it. We do have to choose what works best for us.

Your MGP blog related to many women and that is a great niche. So glad you pitched one blog to another and got true results.

So, your stories sure did pull in more readers than anything else. Go with it and keep up the great work.

    Hey Donna,

Great post and topic here. Storytelling is an artform that few can master effectively.

It’s not enough to just tell a story, you need to make sure it has a message and benefit to those reading it. I’ve been writing most of bmy lkife and I find it difficult to incorporate stories at times … But its always something I practice. And I think it’s something everyone should practice from time to time because as your story in that other poost proved, it can really hook people in and get them engaged.

Great stuff as always , Donna.

      Hi Andrew,

Indeed, the story itself has to have a specific message to benefit the reader. It is pretty difficult to do, but I agree….we all must practice it from time to time.

After a while, we get better and better at it and it sure does pull a reader into the post. I always find that whatever message is in story form sticks in my mind better than anything else.

Lots of good questions and love the graphic Donna. I don’t really write in story format for my blog posts, but I definitely share stories and I believe in my niche in particular – personal transformation – this really helps my readers to relate to the point I’m making. Basically I identify patterns in behavior and then help people understand how to identify and – if they choose to – change them. So seeing how others create meaningful change makes a big difference.

      Hi Marquita,

I love the way you write. I have read some stories you have shared in your niche about personal transformation. It sure does help us resonate with the topic.

You are so clear on identifying patterns of behavior and how people can understand it. You make it so great to take the plunge and change our behaviors if we are willing to.

Yes, seeing how others can change is a very powerful way to illustrate how we, ourselves can change too.

    Hi Donna,

That was a great post too. You nailed it – successfully combining a point with a tale.

I’ve been to Ryan’s blog, and have even read one of his (many) books. I appreciate how he communicates – especially since he discusses his own life in his work.

I think we like to relate to others. If we can somehow see ourselves in someone else, it brings a sense of comfort and familiarity.

While I don’t usually use anything fictional to tell stories, I certainly use my own real life stories.

The post I had written “Are We Aware of What We’re Thinking?” came to life through a story of mine in which I caught myself in the act of doing something I know others can relate to.

I’d love to be able to get into some creative fictional story telling. I may use your post as an example one of these days.

      Hi Dana,

I do find that when we write something about ourselves that others can relate to it does go over in a huge way. People not only can enjoy the story, but more than that….they can identify with us.

I usually like to share stories where I screwed things up and then learned how to get it correct. I like to put the emotional content in it so that others can “feel” what I went through. I find it’s the best way to learn.

Working on those fictional stories, but they always seem to come from real life experiences with myself or others.
