Screen Capture Video On Your Blog

Learn “How To Put Screen Capture Video On Your Blog | And Why” in order to give your blog a more interesting look.

The information you give people in your blog posts is great.

Still, people will not just want to visit your blog because of the information you share, but because it has an appealing look to it.

I’m sure you know the saying “you can’t tell a book by it’s cover.”

Nonetheless, books often get sold on the basis of their covers.

I’ll bet you never heard of the book “Ba! Ba! Black Sheep,” nor have you seen it’s rather drab cover design meant topromote it as a historical novel.

But, I’ll also bet that you HAVE heard of the book “Gone With The Wind,” as well as the movie, the soundtrack and everything else related to it. You probably get an instant mental image of the cover and movie poster of Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler in close embrace. This cover was meant to promote the book as steamy romantic novel.

The thing you might not have know is that “Ba! Ba! Black Sheep” is the same novel as “Gone With The Wind” only re-released with a substantial makeover.

No, you can’t tell a book by it’s cover.

But the cover is still probably one of the main reasons you’ll buy it.

Dressing Up Your Blog

Using screen capture video is probably one of the easiest ways to make your blog look a lot spiffier and more professional.

It can be used to support your article, and make it more visual.

How To Put Screen Capture Video On Your Blog | And Why

All you really want to do is to take the main idea of your blog and put it into a video.

Of course, you can do that with a face to camera video as well, but there is good reason to put screen capture on your blog instead.

1. One reason is that you obviously don’t have to be in front of the camera.

For many people, this is a big deal because they just don’t like seeing themselves in video.

So they avoid video altogether.

That’s really a shame because nothing gets people’s attention and holds their retention more than video.

Screen capture video helps you leapfrog over that snag.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

It’s video, but you can stand invisibly in the background.

Some people don’t even like to hear their recorded voice, so you can actually shoot screen capture videos without even speaking. Just use some text points, background music or anything that seems appropriate.

2. Another reason to use screen capture video on your blog is that it is a moving visual presentation.

If you’re just sitting in front of the camera, after a short time, people could lose their focus and interest in the topic.

Because the screen capture continually jumps from one image to another, people are riveted to your presentation and locked in to your message.

3. The most obvious reason to use screen capture video is that it breaks up a text heavy article.

Bloggers know that it’s smart to use bold headlines, bullet points, color and white space to break the intensity and tedium of endless lines of text.

One of the best ways to do that is with the insertion of screen capture videos.

Screen Capture Video On Your Blog Give You Personal Branding

You want people to know that you are unique.

You want them to know you are a leader in your field and an authority to follow closely.

When you write a blog post with lots of information, you probably won’t leave much of an impression on people.

Information is only information.

But your screen capture video gives it personality… your personality… even if it’s only through your voice of text captions.

People forget information quickly, but they are much more likely to remember the images, the voice, the personality behind them.

By using screen capture video on your blog, you rise above anonymity.

You become a real person.

You are now someone that your readers have “met” and would like to engage with.

It’s one of the best ways to start building a relationship with your visitors.

People don’t join your email list or bookmark your blog because they like your information.

They do it because they like you.

They won’t like you until they get to know and trust you.

That’s the real power of screen capture video.

It’s all about building your personal brand.

How To Put Screen Capture Video On Your Blog | And Why

Well, we’ve given you some good reasons why you should put screen capture video on your blog.

Learning how to do it is pretty simple.

You start by getting a good screen capture software.

There are both paid and free screen capture softwares available for either PC or MAC.

Just do a Google search and you’ll find them pretty easily.

Once you’ve downloaded the software, just open a web page in your browser, turn on “record” and start narrating as you move along the page.

Continue this process as you move from one web page to another until your presentation is done.

When you’re done, you’ll have a screen capture video on your desktop.

Just name it, save it, and you’ve got a screen capture video to put on your blog.

Upload it to YouTube, grab the “embed code” and paste it where you want it to appear on your blog.

That’s all there is to it.

If you’d like to see some different types of the screen capture videos I’ve put on my blog, and learn how you can do them too… then sign up for my free training “Using Screen Capture Video On Your Blog.”

    Hi Donna,

Wow, I have heard of both “Ba! Ba! Black Sheep” and “Gone With The Wind” BUT I did not know that they were one and the same re-released with a substantial makeover!. (Leave it to me to digress from the main subject.)

I do use screen capture videos in my training and coaching…I’ll have to go back and see how often I post them on my blog. Hey, you’ve just given me an idea–take snippets of those videos and post them on my blog.

One day I am going to conduct a survey to see if I am the only person who doesn’t like to watch videos on blogs. I usually will not watch them because it just takes too much time of my time. I am a speed reader.

      Hi Rachel,

He He love your sense of humor my friend.

Aha..indeed putting up a snippet of your video on a blog post would be a seductive way of getting people to find out the rest of the story……

As long as a video is short..and you give the CTA telling people to watch this three minute video they will. I’m like you because I don’t like watching long videos on a blog…makes me crazy!

However, if the blogger tells me the time and if it is five minutes of under I will watch it and then go over to Youtube to subscribe, comment and share.

Try it ..you will find that it works very well.

If something goes wrong or if I need different tools, this is how I learn to get them and make it work. I hope you will be inspired to do more videos. Either face to face, or screen captures. Hey Donna,

I think using screek capture videos would be an ever better idea for when you do tutorials.

I’ve done a few step by step tutorials just using images but for some reason I think I could be more detailed with screen capture. It’s a better way to brand yourself so your audience can also put the voice behind the blog and the personality behind it.

This would be a different route for me but I like the fact that it keeps your content more diverse!

Thanks for sharing Donna! Have a great weekend!

      Hi Sherman,

The screen cap vid is a great way to say so much more than you could by writing.

But really, the bonding you do with your audience is incredible, and almost impossible to achieve from just written words.

If you can face the camera for a few seconds once in a while, that’s nice… but even just your voice is such a powerful way to connect with people.

You share your personality, as you say, not just your info. People are far more interested in people than in just information.

I love seeing screen capture video on people’s blog but I never thought about putting them on some of my blogs. You named several reasons why I fear it.

I don’t think I sound too good on video even though I see how professional it makes a blogger look.

But yes, you really build close, bonding relationships with people through video, even if its just screen capture with only your voice. It’s all for personal branding.

Hi Donna. I like screen capture video too, especially for learning or showing how to do something. It’s one thing to read how to do something, like setup a complex plugin or do keyword research. I find it much more effective to see it in a short video. Sometimes to explain something, even if it’s really simple, can take forever in words while two or three minutes of video can make it crystal clear. I’ve had a bunch of that kind of thing on my todo list, so maybe it’s time to get on it. Thanks.

      Hi Ben,

You’re absolutely right, and it’s a point I think I didn’t make too strongly… it takes a long time to try to explain in words, complicated processes… hey, it’s even cumbersome trying to explain simple ones!

So much faster for you, as blogger, to shoot a 5 minute video showing “how to” instead of laboring for an hour trying to figure out the best way to write it out.

But even more important, your blog visitor would much rather watch that 5 minute video than spend an hour trying to figure out what you mean in your long, drawn out text instruction.

      Thanks for that 🙂

    Hi Donna

It’s Friday afternoon here, and I was about to switch off but then thought ‘Hey I haven’t checked Donna’s blog the last few days’. Glad I did because this is a super helpful post, particularly for those folks who are new to the world of screen capture videos.

It sure is a potent little strategy and removes most of the hesitation people have about doing video – no need to front a cam.

Although I’m more of a text kind of guy, video plays a role for sure, if for no other reason than this: people love watching videos!

And they love it because it’s a fun way to learn. If I want to learn something, I often choose video instead of text. But as you say combining one with the other is perhaps the best way to do it.

The effective use of video takes the whole branding and authority positioning thing to another level. They hear you and if it’s a direct to cam kind of video they see you as well. I’ve lost count of the number of clients I’ve attracted because they saw one or more of my videos. Videos rock!

I urge your readers to take advantage of your generous offer and grab your training guide on this topic. I know they won’t be disappointed.

    Thanks again, Donna

      Hi Kim,

You really give some strong reasons for doing some screen cap videos for your blog.

Like you suggest, it really does put you (and your personal branding strategy) in a whole different league than the vast majority of those who never develop this part of their business.

I actually like the “challenge” groups that form to encourage people to get started with this strategy. Typically, there would be something like a “30 day challenge” to post a new video to YouTube each day, or something along those lines.

This is great because it gets people immediately past the “perfection” hangup and makes them do it. Believe me, after doing a video a day for 30 consecutive days, you’ll have a much, much better idea of how to do it.. and how to leverage it in your business.

PS: Folks don’t have to join a “challenge group” to do this. They just gotta do it!

      Hi Emi,

People need to make video production a part of their routine, or they never seem to happen, or they happen haphazardly.

A good idea is to schedule yourself for 1 video a week, or 1 per blog post, or 1 a day to post to YouTube, or whatever. The point is to make a schedule and stick to it.

You’ll only get better at it, the more you do.

Keep in mind that screen capture videos are really no different than any other kind of video except that they include capturing your screen to some degree… so your browser, a slide show or whatever. But they can also capture your web cam so that you can be in the video too, as much or as little as you want.

    Hi Donna,

Beyond awesome timing here because just last week I did a Hangout On Air of a screen capture. About how to align your blog. The volume did not work – or I turned off the mic LOL – but will do many screen shares in the future. I love being a ham on video, mugging it, but also feel like I’m having a ball screen share style. I vibe with your reasons too; screen shares look professional and add credibility to your blog. What a direct learning tool too, right? I mean, just show someone EXACTLY how to do someone on their blog or on any site by baby stepping them through the process, through a screen share. Make it easy on your audience, and on yourself.

Googling for screenshare software as we speak 😉

      Hi Ryan,

I feel your paid… no sound 🙂 You can actually do a soundtrack over the video, but that’s a bit techie and probably something you’d rather not get into.

Hint: When you set up to record, whatever software you have usually has the options to record mic directly from your computer or from an external mic. If you don’t “tell it” to record from the external mic, you’ll get NO audio 🙁

As for your videos, don’t make the mistake that SOOO many people do of thinking they’re JUST for demonstrating something, like how to add a plugin to your blog, etc.

I’ve done screen cap videos of everything in the world from how to meditate to overcoming procrastination to how to upload a product into JVZoo. Some are highly technical and stuff you need to demonstrate, others are just conversation about anything, with graphic takeaways, slide shares etc etc.

You can do anything at all with screen cap vid, not just demo.

    Hi Donna

A very informative post indeed and you explained every point very comprehensively.

I fully agree with your points why it is better to create a screen capture video instead of taking a long shot of one’s own to take the risk of boring people by watching a same face for a long time 🙂

Yes, there are several screen capture videos available both free and premium and one should first try free version of the premium one and then go for the paid product to avoid taking any risk by buying directly.

I am seriously thinking to create a few screen capture videos for my green blog and after reading this post would start it soon.

      Hi Mi Muba,

I totally agree that face-to-camera shots of just the presenter talking do get tedious.

Think, even, on the news or a talk show… the camera is always jumping away from the presenter to other people, or the audience, a video cutaway or even a graphic of some sort.

Nobody can just stand in front of a camera and talk, and hope to keep people’s interest for more than a minute or 2.

What I often do is start my video face-to-camera for 30 seconds, maybe a minute… then switch over to a slide show, Powerpoint, browser screen etc. All this sounds real difficult to newbies, I know, but it’s really just a matter of getting started and doing it often.

I create a lot of training courses so I do this all the time.

      Only practice makes perfect 🙂

Hope to see you “in action” real soon.

Yes, you got ALL the reasons why I don’t do video. I tried – honestly I did – but I just looked shifty because I was so petrified. Even getting an updated gravatar or Facebook photo throws me into terror – you wouldn’t believe how many go into the bin every time I try.

However…. the screen capture video sounds more accessible so I’ve requested your info. No promises, but let’s have a think!

For my own consumption I actually prefer reading to video, so that’s maybe why I’ve resisted so long, but I know I’m in a minority.

Somehow it worked. But I’ll share a secret with you and all who are reading this….Every time I finish a face to face video, I don’t look at it again. Oh yes..there is editing and other things I need to do, but I don’t concentrate on how my hair looks, or if my lipstick is on. I would go into a tizzy myself.

You mention that you prefer reading to video and if that’s how you learn best, maybe it is why you resisted.

      Cheers!

    Hi Donna.

Excellent post on screen capture video.

I haven’t used it on any of my posts yet, but I did use it to make an overview video for one of the products I promote on my blog.

I came across someone who was having a big problem with hackers trying to login to her WP blog, over 3000 attempts, in one of the Facebook groups. I instantly thought of a plugin I was told about by Glenn Shepherd that would drop that number down to zero. It worked for me.

I think if she’s having this problem, there are probably many others experiencing the same thing. I’m thinking about creating a screen capture video showing and explaining exactly what to do, from getting the plugin installed and activated to the actual settings that would stop this problem dead in it’s tracks.

People like to actually see what’s happening instead of just reading about it.

Thanks for explaining this to everyone.

    Talk to you soon…..Chris

      Hi Cris,

What a great idea!!! By all means do it because it is a common problem for all of us and by doing a screen capture we can see and follow along. So much easier than reading and then trying to apply it.

Screen captures are great for that reason. Like Lea mentioned “Money see monkey do.” Hope to see it soon!

    Hi Donna,

I like screen captures for how to and informational bits because it shows you exactly what’s going on. It can be a little cumbersome to read something line for line to get through the steps but with video its almost like you’re doing it. And the easiest way to learn is monkey see, monkey do lol.

I haven’t found the need to do this as of yet, but if I did I surely would. Thanks for the how to!

      Hi Lea,

The one thing I can never do is read one of my screen captures line for line. I use it as sort of a reference. One line about something and then go off and talk about it for a bit in my own words, or examples.

But learning from them is such an easy way to get things stuck in this old head of mine. This is why I like to use them myself so people can learn easier.

Hello Donna, Wow it has been years since I did a screen capture video, I used to do them all the time. Now that I think about it, it was because the tool I purchased for this was lost when my computer crashed and I never looked int finding it again nor looking into another one.

Oh I do use Jing but the video time is limited.

I am going to have to go and check out your training and see what kind of tools you recommend for this..

    Great Post My Friend!
    Thanks,

      Hi Chery,

I’m familiar with Jing but not a fan. There are so many different tools I use to do a screen capture video that are easy to do. Especially for me because I’m not the technical type as you well know lol.

Happy to know you signed in for the training. We will give it all we got.

    Hi Donna,

Thanks so much for sharing this. I think screen captures do dress up a blog post. I was reading through the comments, all great ones by the way, and I agree with what Dana said.

I get more out of watching video tutorials with screencapture. It makes the information more easy for me to retain in the old noggin’. 🙂

Thanks for showing us how to do it this. I’m going to be doing videos very soon and I really want them to be as informative and helpful as can be.

I’m also going to sign up for your help, thanks for offering! 🙂

Hope you’re having a great day.

      Hi Cori,

I feel the same way when learning something. The courses I take with videos on them do stick in my head more than anything else. I guess it is because I can hear, see and/or read along. So it hits many different ways of learning something.

We all learn differently from visual, to reading to auditory. I am looking forward to seeing you put together something on your blog. I know it will be great!

    Hey Donna,

    This is SO timely!

I would much prefer to do something like this than to sit in front of the camera in order to create a video. I don’t mind doing this when it comes to interviews or hangouts, etc…but for informational videos, but I’d rather be behind the camera more often than not.

I did sign up for the training, so thank you.

You’re right, there’s plenty of information out there. It’s easy to forget a blog post, even when you’ve found it valuable.

But people like to connect with one another. It builds trust and familiarity. This seems like an easy, but useful tool to help us do this.

      Hi Dana,

So many people like you prefer not to be in front of the camera. Sure we do need to do it for that know like and trust factor from time to time, but not always!

I just read your recent blog and you had fantastic videos on it that illustrated what the post was about. It helped so much for the information to stick in my head. You are doing a great job.

    Hey Donna,

I was talking to a new client just yesterday and her other coach had told her to do videos which she was just not comfortable doing. She did them though although she hated every minute of it and I told her if she’s not comfortable then to do a screen cast video just like what you just shared.

I’m not much of a video person unless I want to learn something. That’s when screen cast videos for me are lifesavers. If the person is walking me through what I need to do then that’s how I learn better.

I use Camtasia and have had this software for years now but I do know there are so many others ones available too.

I love your suggestions and thanks for showing people how they need to do this as well.

Hope your week started off well and have a good one.

      Hi Adrienne,

Videos are great but not everyone is comfortable doing them. Having a screen cast video can be the answer to the camera shy.

You have also brought up a great point whereby it is a good way to learn things. I too like to learn that way. I can absorb something and then “pause” it. Then continue.

It’s a great walk through when we are teaching something especially on our blog.

    Hi Donna!

Sometimes it’s just easier to show people how to do something than it is to try and just tell them. No doubt if I wrote more tutorial or ‘how to’ posts I’d be using more screen capture videos than I am now.

I did use a few of them on my old site, captured with Camtasia. They did do a good job at demonstrating points and helping people understand how to do whatever they came to my site to learn.

Of course, you’ve demonstrated a lot of other good reasons to utilize screen capture videos as well. I do think video is going to become more and more of a necessity and screen capture is a great way for beginners and experienced creators alike to build value for their audience.

    Thanks Donna!

      Hi James,

I notice you just did a Hootsuite tutorial and I think a screencap video would have been a perfect walk-through for that :))

But we can use screen capture videos for far more than tutorial purposes. It’s great for interviews, for face to camera, for both newbie and advanced marketers.

Even a VSL (video sales letter) is essentially a screen capture.

You can do virtually anything with screen capture video and I totally agree with you that video not only will, but already has become more and more of a necessity.

I’m the dumb guy who kept clicking on the things thinking a video was going to start at that point; sigh… lol It’s an interesting idea, certainly something I’ve never thought about. I’m going to have to think about this one some more because I also want people to watch the videos and, if they end up being, uhhh, “experimental” like I was they might be clicking on the images thinking like I did. 😉

      Hi Mitch,

It’s funny, I thought about the fact that images of videos might mislead people into thinking they’re real videos… haha

I used them anyway just to show people what some parts of the videos looked like.

I’d love to see you do some videos, even if they were “experimental”… In fact, people like those even better. You know why? Because they like to see real people do real things even if they’re dumb, and really… better that they screw up because that’s how people relate better with us.

I’m hooked on doing videos, it’s so much fun and there are so MANY different things you can do with them. It’s not just about teaching… it’s about engaging, face to face, voice to ear, and image to eye. etc.

    Hi Donna,

    Informative indeed 🙂

Yes, I’ve seen a few screen capture video software online, but never used any on my blog so far. Instead there are the screenshots or screen captures one tends to use, if at all, as the need never arose as yet. You know, I still have to venture into the YouTube and video section!

But I liked all that you mentioned, and would be surely checking them out further as you don’t need to be visible if you’re making them, as you mentioned, which sounds like the best part! Also, the idea of a moving presentation is always nice, or else it becomes like a slideshare I guess. Let me share this one with my better half, as he would love going through it, to use on our blog.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

      Hi Harleena,

I’d love to see you get into some video work. What fun 🙂

You’ve got such a great blog, and the video would only make it that much better.

I think you should just try some 2 or 3 minute screen captures to get the wheels rolling. You could even use it to do a few little interviews of some of your guest bloggers.

So many possibilities, but I know… so little time… for all of us 🙂

    Hi Donna,

I sometimes use screen casts on my blogs.
Did you know that you can now embed videos that you have loaded onto Facebook in a article?

Nice, cause it gets rid of those ads that are attached to Youtube videos.

I have tried not allowing ads on a video on Youtube, it worked for awhile, then all of
a sudden…ads and suggested videos are back. Guess they change things around!

      Hi Cararta,

I know a lot is going on now with the Facebook videos, but I didn’t know you could embed them on your blog. That’s really cool… thanks for mentioning it.

The YouTube ads and related videos are annoying, but remember, it’s a free video storage site, and as the say, “there’s no free lunch” . LOL…

But another part of the story is, all the ads and related videos are part of what makes YouTube videos so viral. We’ll have to see if Facebook videos perform as well. Also, from what I’ve seen, once Facebook gets rolling, the ads will be there… and they’ll cost plenty.

      IMHO 🙂
