Build Momentum And Ride The Wave

This post was most recently updated on August 1st, 2016

Build Momentum And Ride The WaveYour online business can become a crushing success when you learn how to “Build Momentum And Ride The Wave.”

The problem many people encounter is that they do a few things and then sit back and wait for things to happen.

They actually stand by and watch, hoping and praying that some kind of momentum will start to roll and their business will suddenly be on top of the world.

But it doesn’t quite work that way, does it?

It sure doesn’t for me, and I don’t see it working for anyone else either.

Here’s the thing you have to consider.

The 18 Wheeler Crawl & The California Stop

Ok, I’m giving you two examples of how this works.

I could have given you just one but I know it’s always smart to overdeliver.

So here’s two for you 🙂

Episode 1. The 18 Wheeler Crawl

Did you ever watch in your rear view mirror as an 18 wheeler rolls up behind you as you sit at a standstill?

Maybe you’re in traffic, or at a red light or stop sign.

You’re stopped dead cold.

But the 18 wheeler just keeps rolling along ever so slowly.

Inch by inch it crawls ever closer to you.

You sit and wait.

Foot on the brake, playing with the radio.

A quick in the rear view mirror and you see that truck is still coming up behind you.

You wonder when… if… it will stop.

Then the light turns green.

Special: [FREE] Learn To Blog… (My Video Inside)

You jump on the gas pedal and leave the truck well behind.

Why didn’t it ever stop?

All the cars were stopped, but the 18 wheeler just kept crawling along.

Really, it’s basic physics.

Episode 2. The California Stop

Growing up in Brooklyn, I know what a risky business it is to cross the street.

Even if you’re in the cross walk, the cars never come to a full halt at the stop light.

So, you learn to move fast when you have to cross.

I’ve witnessed more than a few fights between motorists and pedestrians, or between two drivers.

And it was pretty common for the person who never came to a full stop to claim the “California Stop” defense.

If you’re not up on the street lingo, a “California Stop” is not really a “stop” at all.

It’s a slow roll.

The driver kind of slows down, while looking to see if it’s okay to keep going.

If things seem okay, the slow roll is quickly accelerated into a race through the stop sign without ever having stopped at all.

It’s the same law of physics.

Newton & Online Marketing

Newton was the first to formulate an equation for momentum, but philosophers had spoken of it in various terms much earlier.

Okay, I’m not a physics student but I can tell you this much.

Momentum is essentially the acceleration of a body in motion.

When something is at a standstill, it is motionless (physicists call it inertia).

It requires a great deal of effort (energy) to move something that is motionless, because it is grounded by gravity.

But once it is put into motion, far less effort is required to keep in moving, and it even tends to accelerate.

One of Newton’s key principles of momentum is that “a body in motion tends to stay in motion.”

This actually has a lot to do with online marketing.

I’ll get back to that in a minute.

The Fable Of The Truck And The Car

The truck failed to stop fully because the driver knew something about Newtonian physics.

If it were to stop, a great deal more energy (in the form of gas) would be required to get it going again than if it just stayed in motion.

The motion need not be great, although the greater the acceleration, the less the energy needed to maintain it.

So it’s easier for the truck to regain it’s speed if it can keep crawling, and avoid coming to a full stop.

The driver of the car knows the same thing.

If he/she comes to a full stop, then has to get moving again, it will take more time, energy and effort.

People in Brooklyn tend to be very impatient.

Special: [FREE] See How You Can Build An Amazing Email List

The don’t like to waste time, energy and effort.

So they don’t like to come to a grinding halt at stop signs (or traffic lights for that matter… lol).

So they’re just as intuitively aware of physics as the truck driver are.

The Moral Of The Story

Here’s what I find in blogging and other forms of online business.

You can’t get something started, like a new blog, a Facebook page or anything else… without a great deal of effort.

What I see so often, though, is that once people have put something like that into motion, they tend to back off on the effort required to make it really accelerate.

They figure they put a lot of work, time and money into getting their business rolling, now they want to sit back and enjoy the results.

It’s not like they stop working.

They just slow things down because they think it’s taking too much work and they’re not getting the results they wanted fast enough.

So they just kind of slow things down and hope to see their business take off on its own.

Sometimes they even stop altogether and start doing something else for a while.

The problem with this is, that in order to build momentum in your business, you must keep accelerating it.

It won’t increase it’s speed or growth spontaneoulsy.

And without momentum in your business, it will trend toward inertia… and die.

So to be successful and build profits with your business, you must build momentum.

It’s simple physics.

For your business to develop momentum, you need to keep expending the effort required to cause that to happen.

Once you create enough momentum, it reaches a critical tipping point.

This is the point at which it will start to accelerate almost effortlessly.

Then you can let up on your effort and it will still keep growing.

But you need to get it up that tipping point before you take the gas off the pedal.

The most important thing to do to generate the momentum your business needs to hit that critical tipping point is to continually work the process required.

Don’t worry about the results you’re getting.

They don’t matter.

They really don’t, even though they feel like the most important thing of all at the moment.

Once your business is finally getting good results, and they are coming in effortlessly, you will laugh at how you used to run to your affiliate stats to see if you made a small commission that day.

You will laugh at how you used to wonder if you could sell 10 copies of your ebook, or get 10 coaching clients.

You see, once you’ve built momentum, it tends to sustain itself, and just keep growing.

It’s like if you let a ball roll down a hill.

It’s slowest velocity will be the first 6 inches.

It will hardly seem to be moving.

By the time it gets half way down the hill it will be going so fast that nothing can stop it.

This is when your results will come in, not in drips and drops, but in waves.

Big waves.

Now, just relax and ride the wave.

You’re on top of it!

    Hey Donna,

Great post and love the comparisons.

The California stop is funny because that happens here too in Toronto and they just put a law that if people are caught doing that, they’ll get fined. And the thing about the truck is true. They always have a slow crawl when coming up behind you.

The line I loved in this post was “The problem with this is, that in order to build momentum in your business, you must keep accelerating it.”

You can’t take your foot off the gas in your business. You have to keep doing and going. Even just little things. Being complacent is just going to delay you.

    Thanks for sharing.

    Hey Donna,

    I LOVED the examples 🙂

Taxi drivers in Amsterdam now know exactly when the lights go on green, so they tend to do the same thing. They roll slowly and if they think it’s going on green, they hit the pedal. It’s a bit dangerous, but that’s part of city life.

I’ve experienced how momentum works and I’ve also been on the other side of the scale, but I never consciously thought about it like this.

I am also reading a book right now called “the slight edge” by Jeff Olsen, which is more about compounding.

What it means is that our “small insignificant” actions are what makes the big difference in the long run. Every small choice we make: eating healthy or unhealthy, writing or not writing, doing 15 pushups a day or not, is what makes the very difference in the end.

I’m going to tie these 2 things in my mind and put them to work, Donna 😉

Thank you so much for sharing this with us.

I’m delighted you enjoyed this post. That book you are reading is right on target. Indeed, each and everything we do or not do has an effect on us. Once you are mindful of that, and put it into action, you will see life in a much different way.

Because I studied parapsychology, I know that everything is composed of energy. With that in my mindset every action and choice I make has an effect on me and my business.

Have fun with that book and grow like crazy!

Interesting relationship between momentum and marketing online. lol I doubt any of those folks actually thought about the physics of it; I do believe more than half of them are just jerks. 🙂

With that said, your premise about the need to try to keep momentum going after you create something you believe in is absolutely correct. It took some time before I realized that it’s not only about marketing after a product is completed but beforehand as well. The act of building up buzz is part of the equation… one that I’m still bad at but at least I try.

I probably wouldn’t tell anyone not to worry about the results as much as don’t obsess over them. One will drive you crazy, while the other allows you to tweak and see if you can figure out how to do things better. At least that’s how I see it. 😉

      Hi Mitch,

Indeed there is a buzz one must create before the product is produced to the public. Then there is that launch thing ….. After that, there must be more added. I used to be bad at it too, but like anything else we do in life, the more we do it the better we become at it as long as we don’t loose our momentum.

As for results…I just ride the wave. I may have to tweak things here and there, but I don’t stress it. The worse thing is that it won’t work out…so you just go back to the drawing board, but never give up.

Thanks for coming by and always being so honest.

Thanks for sharing such an excellent analogy Donna!

And the process you describe, unfortunately sounds so familiar!LOL!

Entrepreneurs, on or offline, seem to wanna initially build their businesses,
then they suddenly get hell bent on trying to coast!LOL!

As if somehow, their businesses will just keep building themselves!LOL!

And when that doesn’t happen, as you so wisely pointed out, they come to
    a grinding halt!

And boy is it ever hard to try and start gaining forward momentum again,
from a stand still! This was an excellent post! And so true! Thanks so much for sharing it!

And I also totally agree with the powerful words of wisdom you shared in your video
as well! So don’t be surprised, when you see in it in one of my future blog post!LOL!

    Hi Donna,
You are so wise. When I read that title, “Crushing success”, I thought the article would be about being so successful that it crushed you. That would be scary. lol You explained it well
Riding the Wave, every day. Building momentum.

I liked the analogy of the California stop. It’s not only in New Jersy. We have a stop sign just at the end of our house and some people do not make a complete stop. We have animals and worry about with that. We will call it the California stop from now on in your honour.

“Newtonian physics.” Now there is a phrase!

I am afraid I know some people who have put a lot of work and time into getting their business going and they sit back, or worse jump to something else. The phrase I had someone say to me was ” it can just run on autopilot”.

    As you stated…
“The problem with this is, that in order to build momentum in your business, you must keep accelerating it.” Riding the wave every day or as you said in your video, excellent btw. You have to take a day off here and there to deal with life issues but you must build momentum to
be successful and profitable with your business.

It’s simple physics. Excellent article! Will share it!

So true…when we build momentum in our business we must keep accelerating it. We cannot stop and leave things and then come back after a while expecting everything to be the same. We come back and hear crickets….

It is simple physics when you think of it that way!

    Hi Donna,
It’s true that a rolling stone gathers no moss. It’s also true about the snowball effect where the rolling snowball increases in size. Both have the same effect of momentum, but the rolling snowball is more the one we want. You can create momentum in either direction. As long as we continue to do the right things, there is no reason for the momentum to do anything but benefit us. Consistent, positive action will lead to the snowball momentum effect and that’s what we all look for.

    Hello Donna,

    Great write-up!

I am a true believer of working consistently on the projects that I start because either you slow down or stop working, you may not see the business growing. Being slow down is somehow okay for some different situations like you are busy in launching some other projects. But, that slow down must be for a shorter duration and not for the long one because when you are going slow, competitors can grab the market.

    Thus, keep working!

I’m at lunch reading your reading your post. Just before I got here some ceased to slow down behind me as I was making a right turn into the parking structure. Lol

    What a coincidence.

But I really like the analogy, nor because I almost got hit, but this is how I was blogging and doing affiliate marketing in the past.

I was much more focused on the results than the process of building a blog and home business.

It’s all in the way you think and what you focus on that makes a big difference.

When it comes to getting the results you want to focus on the action steps to get those results. The to compliments each other and that’s when momentum is built.

However, when focusing on exactly what we are doing and doing it well…. Taking baby steps with the patience of a Saint…then momentum is built. So much so that monetization follows easier.

    Hi Donna

This reminded me of my granddad – he and his wife worked hard to build their retail business, and were doing very well. Then he decided to retire… far too early, and with the foot off the pedal, obviously the income stopped coming in. Luckily he was able to work with my Dad in HIS business, so it wasn’t a total disaster.

My Dad didn’t make the mistake of retiring too soon – he’s 93 and still actively involved in his business.

I’m normally pretty good at “keeping going”, even if sometimes it’s at a slow pace. But I have noticed that when I’ve had a holiday, or a long weekend I find it dreadfully difficult to get started again.

He must have learned a good lesson seeing your granddad retire early then realizing he needed money coming in. It’s a good thing your dad was there to give him a hand.

Taking our foot off the pedal too early can hurt us sometimes.

Hi Donna. I can vouch for what you are saying. I had everything working pretty well with my website and blog a few years ago, then needed to step away for a couple years. It carried its momentum for a long time. It was probably a year and a half before my income started to drop off significantly. That shows the power of having good momentum. On the other hand, now that I’m back in it again, it has taken a lot of time and effort to reverse the free fall that it was in after 2 years and get it growing again. It is a whole lot easier to maintain your speed than it is to start and stop all the time. Great analogy Donna.

    Hi Donna,

It was an awesome idea bringing in some Physics right into blogging 🙂 It spiced up things on a serious level 🙂 🙂

The topic you addressed today is one that many business people tend to take for granted – not only bloggers (thanks to our crazy instant gratification ‘policies’ today). However, to get something worthwhile, anything, time and energy is required. Or, nothing happens!

Back to the blogging world…I have seen bloggers come and go in the last 5 years I have been blogging. For many of these bloggers, it was a clear case of impatience that made them leave for ‘greener’ pastures. Unfortunately, I strongly believe that with such a mindset, they’ll also leave whatever they jumped into when the time comes to increase their commitment or watch their ventures die.

The keywords or mantra here is simple: “Accelerate or Die!”

    Do make the day great!

    Always,

I love those keywords you mention Accelerate or Die! To complete any task, especially when it comes to blogging, it does take time and patience. One must have the mindset that whatever they are doing it is for others. That is satisfaction within itself! But, we all must monetize and that does take time too.

But if we are happy to help others, we will gain patience.

I shuddered reading about the Californian Stop. While in San Fransisco about 15 years ago a brother of a friend drove us to Silicon Valley. He made the trip daily to work. He’d calculated the speed he had to go to miss each red traffic light – and speed he did. He barely made some of them and it was scary when I had children with me. Keeping up momentum is so important but you can’t just barge ahead without thought. It still takes planning and continuing to monitor what’s working.

Unfortunately I do sometimes lose momentum because doubts creep in.

What a great topic, Donna! I love the analogies.

As we used to say in sales, “It’s easier to keep the ball rolling than to stop and pick it up.”

Momentum is a funny thing, isn’t it?

Last November, I paused everything relating to my online content until almost the end of January. As you know, I was re-branding my blog and preparing for its official relaunch.

Oh, of course, I published a few teaser posts…

But mostly, I watched my traffic, social interactions, comments, mailing list subscriptions, and so forth, dwindle down to almost nothing.

But I figured that was okay!

After all, with all the excitement for my relaunch, surely I’d bounce right back… right?

And, of course, that wasn’t the case.

I finished all the changes I wanted to make, had new content ready to roll, and re-launched my blog towards the end of January. And nothing happened.

No shares. No comments. No new mailing list subscriptions…

You could literally see the tumbleweeds rolling by.

It took me the better part of a month to get that traffic ramped back up again.

    Point of the story?

Momentum is a powerful thing, as you say. And it’s a lot easier to move forward with momentum on your side… losing focus on doing the right things every day (the good habits) kills off that momentum awfully quickly, doesn’t it?

      Hi Brent,

Thanks for your wonderful share here to illustrate this so well. Yes, changing our blogs, even with all our teasers can cause the tumbleweed effect for a while.

I do believe it is because people get so used to things. When we do make a change…and announce it wisely, they still get confused. “Where do I go?” or “I don’t usually go there” Where did Brent go?

It is like that with marketing – the principle of people being exposed several times before they would even look at us. Same goes with our blog and re-branding.

But you sure have picked up your momentum and I enjoy visiting you and your awesome guests.

    Hi Donna

I can all my physics lessons coming back to me. I do remember wondering why trucks don’t come to a halt but go slowly. I used to think they were just reckless till i realized that they were trying to keep the momentum going.

For bloggers, it is necessary that we keep putting more efforts in our business or cause. A slight slack in effort can cause all the momentum to go to waste. That is why I loved when one of your posts where you talked about achieving little goals consistently rather than taking on a big one. It is the little ones that help build the momentum.

    Thanks for sharing. Take care

    ikechi

    • Donna Merrill April 1, 2016 at 1:14 pm #

      Hi Ikechi,

Yes, those trucks…I do think if they came to a full stop, if they are on a higher speed, they would hijack. They do have to keep the momentum going in order to pull such a heavy load. And so do we…we have a heavy load to pull with our own business.

Oh yes, I do remember that blog whereby I said to focus on small goals….take each one and celebrate and eventually we can achieve that huge goal set. It sure does build our momentum.

    Hi Donna!

Oh boy, did I ever feel as if you were just talking to me through this post! I have begun reading a book called ‘The Slight Edge’. The author, Jeff Olson talks of this also. My ‘wake up call’ has been slammed home hard this week and I love and appreciate all that you represent and have written in this post.
I am present. I built but didn’t nurture. No more. I’m going to start saying YES to me more often and focus on what I need to do instead of what others want me to do to make their businesses better off!

    Thank you, Thank you 🙂

    • Donna Merrill April 1, 2016 at 12:09 pm #

      Hi Sonia,

I love it when I get a reaction like yours…Like I’m talking to you!

I am so glad that you got that AHA moment whereby you are starting to say yes to YOU and focus what you need instead of what others want you to do just to make their business better off.

It is quite common to go through this Sonia. Then we reach the point where all our hard work is for another. But the good thing is that you have learned. Now you can turn it around and use it all for your own business.

      Wishing you all the best!

    Hi, Donna

    Love that awesome comparisons.

Your explanation of that scientific term “momentum” is simple and clear by using the truck and car. Even the person can immediately get hold the meaning even he did not know what it means before. By the way, you ended the post with the example of getting the ball down the hill was an excellence example too.

i wish I had this post six years ago. I started my first blog six years ago for about half a year, I stopped for some reasons and i did not keep it going. I had first hand experience of when “you stop, it stops period”. It really takes time and a lot of energy to start new blog (just like you said). There are many road blocks along the way. I will keep on going until I will pass the tipping point of the blogging journey.

    Thanks for the article!

    Will pass it along!

      Hi Stella,

Good to know you enjoyed the way I explained the “scientific” way of momentum. But it does apply to what we do every day with our business.

Wow quitting your blog after six months is quite the norm for many people. It is the expectation of quick results and it just doesn’t happen within that time frame. Yes..when you stop…everything else does.

The time it takes to start up again takes so much energy. So the way I see it is to stick in there, and if we ever need time off for one reason or another, slow things down, have guests posting on our blogs, or delegate some work. But never disappear.

      Thanks Stella,

I wonder if the whole argument on using less energy/gas if I keep my car in motion instead of coming to a complete stop would work with the next officer that pulls me over for rolling thru a stop sign…just doing my part to save the environment! 🙂 in all seriousness though, what you say makes great sense in keeping the momentum and building our blog. Hi Donna,

Great analogy, that life coaches use quite often as a matter of fact, and which I like to remind myself on a regular basis.

While it is harder to start things out, as you said, a blog or facebook page, or anything online, once you’ve got that momentum it’s actually hard to stop success coming your way.

Right now I’ve got a few momentums of my own, that’s why I’m been slacking with my blogging and blog reading. As a matter of fact, I haven’t been here in a while as you know, and I apologize for that.

I really love this topic and will share.

I am sure this is one of the things life coaches have to stress. It is something we all need to practice in order to achieve just any goal we set up for ourselves. It could be business or non related, such as personal growth. We do need that momentum to keep it up otherwise it gets lost in space lol.

Please no apologies…I know how your life is going right now and how busy you are. I wish I could visit you 🙂 But that would take me off my momentum he he he

I love your analogy Donna! I’m originally from CA but I must admit I’ve never heard about the CA Stop nevertheless since I’ve been rear-ended twice I had no problem coming up with a visual.

I think the best personal example I can come up with has to do with writing. Most professional writers will tell you writing isn’t about inspiration, it’s about discipline and consistency. I write every day whether it’s a few hundred words or a couple of thousand – the important thing is to keep the energy flowing. Of course, occasionally life gets in the way and I stop for a couple of days, but I know from experience that when I get back to writing the first couple of days is going to produce junk because I have to rebuild focus and momentum. It’s knowing the price I’m going to have to pay at this point that makes me assess my priorities before ever taking time away from writing.

    • Donna Merrill March 31, 2016 at 1:47 pm #

      Hi Marquita,

Thanks so much for giving the “inside view” of a writer. I’m sure it is really about discipline and consistency. I just could only imagine waiting around for inspiration to hit.

I know exactly how you feel about taking a few days away from the momentum. We know that when we come back it is like “double duty” because we need to get back into that groove.

    Hi Donna,

Beautiful word pictures!!!!! Momentum is what I’m always looking for, not profits. If I can see the momentum growing then I know the money is going to follow every single time.

I don’t offer affiliate sales and I work with online businesses… but from the day I started I had benchmarks that I was looking for over a 3 month period. Not daily, weekly or monthly… although I followed monthly because it can show a trend.

I started Unveil with knowing no one online… now I get over 300 emails per day, several coaching/consulting opportunities per week and a thriving email and social media presence.

On top of that, I’ve gone back offline where I really accel, believe it or not, and the results that the momentum from online has given me are accelerating my offline results even more.

The goal has always been to merge the two together to “Unveil the Web” for businesses.

Right now it almost feels like a space shuttle launch, lol… so I better not let momentum collapse or I’ll be falling hard back to earth.

    Great illustration Donna!

I love this post with all my heart Donna. Trying to explain momentum to fellow bloggers can be like pulling teeth at times, and I use the Juggernaut instead of a truck. It’s what we have over here and people understand that they’re slow, steady and unable to pirouette and that’s okay, then generally don’t need to.

But, a person looking to be a successful online marketer needs to build momentum, they need to get so they can do their “California stop” at their leisure and not at the behest of someone else. They also need to consider the fact that without momentum they will always be running around like a headless chicken trying to create it where it’s not possible.

I’d like to add that a new marketer trying to gain momentum, shouldn’t compare themselves favourably with a marketer already established. You must compare like for you.

Newton would be delighted with this post 🙂

I know that feeling trying to explain this momentum to fellow bloggers lol. I am fortunate to know people like you and all others that come here that understand this. However, a few people don’t and it is important, especially when teaching others that momentum is part of the game.

Thanks for adding that a new marketer must never compare themselves with an established one. This is the reason why so many fall off the grid. They see a seasoned marketer that is successful with their business. They try to do the exact same thing that marketer does and within a short amount of time, they quit because they are not getting results.

They never dig deep to find that the seasoned marketer had years of ups and downs before getting said recognition.

He He I’m sure Newton is delighted with this post lol.

    Hey Donna Ma’am,

I found this blog post very inspiring and informative. I like the examples you have given, they illustrate the ideas and helps to understand the message.

Many bloggers think online business is an overnight success because many marketers and bloggers are promoting it that way.But in reality, blogging and online businesses take time to blossom and we need to make daily efforts in various areas like content creation, content promotion, social media and lots of other things.

It takes time and efforts in the beginning but once it get the momentum we just need to maintain it.

It’s like launching rocket once it reaches altitude it requires less energy. (Not as good as you are.)

Thanks for inspiring us Donna ma’am.

    • Donna Merrill March 31, 2016 at 12:45 pm #

      Hi Yogesh,

When we first start we have to have the mindset that things are going to take time. But that applies to just about anything in life doesn’t it?

After such time, we need to keep up the momentum. We sometimes will think…OK I’ve done that now what is next? And that’s OK as long as we keep everything congruent and not jump around from one thing to another.

I love your analogy of launching a rocket!

Yes, we have to understand things take time and as a blogger we have to be patience to see results.

Maintaining the balance between various tasks is very hard task and we have to be focused and clear on our objectives. I am quite new blogger and I have been struggling with this, I have to do lots of things at a time and I am learning to prioritize things, time management, scheduling etc.

          Hi Yogesh,

In the beginning it is so confusing. But the best advice I can give you is to prioritize. First see how much time you have to devote to your blog. Be realistic and take into account some time that you have other obligations to do. We are not robots lol.

Then make a list! Lists will help you feel a sense of accomplishment as you check off each task. This helps you to keep on going.

Blog at least once a week. Go to other blogs like you did here and left a great comment. As I come to you to reciprocate.

Visit 10 blogs per day if you can. That’s up to you and how much time you have so don’t pressure yourself.

Realize it takes time and patience before any monetization can happen. If you are consistent it just will.

Start creating your email list right away. This is where you may offer a free report, or anything else. Then communicate with your list because they are the most important people. Give them more information than you do on your blog and remind them of your services at the end.

Every once in a while tell them to hire you. That’s right! People need to be told wha to do and furthermore they don’t realize it until they are exposed to your offer several times.

If I learned one thing about time it is to “Eat the Frog” Which means do the most unpleasant task first each day and the rest will be easy.

          Hope this helps,

    You’re a great storyteller. 🙂
I know what it takes to stop and how much of a pain it can be to re-start if at all you gather the courage to do it.
A little back, when I saw some noticeable success, I had put myself to the back gear. I thought I have dome so much (even though I had not done anything as compared to whatI could or should do) and this was my biggest mistake.
I had stopped writing and it now scores me hard when I am failing to start with the same pitch that I had left over.

    Hi Donna!

So many times over the years have I killed the momentum by letting off the pedal as soon as I started seeing the smallest signs of success… one of the worst mistakes you can make.

Unfortunately the beginning is where we have to put in the most amount of work for the least amount of results, and so many people get caught up in thinking it’s going to be that way forever.

I don’t always like everything that I do. Everyday I do something that I really don’t want to. But people need to realize that business isn’t always glamorous, there is grinding just like any other profession. And you have to keep grinding, and grinding, and grinding, until eventually you don’t need to grind as much to see the same results. Then, you can focus your energy elsewhere or relax and ride the wave like you said.

I think once you find success once you grant yourself the freedom to take more and more risks, but it’s still important to know beforehand that what you are doing does have the capability to pay off, so you’ll know to keep pushing forward even when things are moving slow.

      Hi James,

I think we all make those mistakes until we learn our own unique momentum. Indeed, when we first start we do put in the most amount of work for the least amount of results. Once we know this, we can have the momentum not to give up.

Indeed, we don’t always like to do everything we have to do in a day. But I usually do that first, this way I get it over with lol. Then have the clarity and energy to go on the rest of my day.

It is so true that once we succeed at one thing, we do give ourselves permission to take more risks. And of course, it is important that we know what we are getting into before making a commitment.

    Amen Donna,

We all only wish we could just put in a little work and then sit back and relax. Life doesn’t work that way, not anything that really matters.

I used to be the same way until about four years ago and I finally got my hands on some great information. Had I not been consistent in my efforts I wouldn’t be where I am today. When people ask me how I did it I tell them I was consistent in my action steps and I never let off the pedal.

We have to get up every single day anyway right and go about our day. So why not just do the action steps you know you need to do each day and then go about your business. When you do then what will appear is exactly what you’ve just shared, you’ll start gaining some really good results and then you’ll have a chance to share this same advice with people who are where you were once.

Love your stories, great examples. You always come up with some very inventive ways to share ideas. Thank you for that Donna and I’ll be sure to share this as well.

    Hi Donna,

“People in Brooklyn tend to be very impatient.”

Yep 😉 Just a pace of living type deal. Most others are moving fast so folks tend to move fast. This is similar in the online world too. People tend to move quickly and that California stop will be in full effect if you keep the momentum going.

Goodness I’ve been in this boat. Taking my foot off of the pedal. Not so much the taking of breaks as we need them, but cowering away when I had success momentum working in my favor.

Instead of going in for the kill – in a high energy way 😉 – I rested on what I’d done, either being obsessed with outcomes or simply getting lazy when I could have churned out a bunch more content, enjoying the process as I did so. I feel that I’m learning to do fun things regularly, from a place of power and semi-detachment, versus force, and wow have neat opportunities flowed my way.

Love the post Donna 😉 Thanks so much for sharing. And when I’m in NYC in a few weeks, for a 2 week house sit, I’ll be on the lookout for the Manhattan version of the California stop 🙂

I noticed lately you are having fun with your entire business. That word is so important because once we reach that level of the fun of it, our energy never ends. We are like kids at an arcade. We never want to stop.

I feel that way myself and work in a pattern in my own pace, in my own time. I don’t hurry nor do I stop, but use energy where it needs to be. And sometimes that energy is time off and having fun romping with my dogs on the beach.

It’s all part of the same thing: That internet lifestyle and I know of all people YOU understand.

    Hi Donna,

I loved the examples you’ve used here.
The reminder is timely for me as well.

I know how easy it is to want to give up or even slow down over the exhaustion of not seeing the results happen quickly enough. I’ve experienced this plenty of times in my field, especially when it comes to weight loss.

I remember when I was on my own journey – I had hit a standstill (they call it a plateau in the health and fitness industry). Here, I had been doing “all the right things”, my efforts were no small feat.

I worked SO HARD – and never lost that “eye of the tiger”, but the weight wouldn’t come off so quickly.

The only thing was…I KNEW something.
I knew what you were saying here. My body had an intelligence system that my limited physical mind couldn;t understand.

I had to step back and let that go – and just keep doing.

It took a few more months, but once the weight came off, it FLEW off.

And what was underneath the fat I lost was a new shape – muscular and fit. My metabolism became very forgiving and never stopped working at peak capacity…
…all because I had kept going – even when there was no physical evidence to support the fruits of my labor.

    Thanks for this 🙂

Thank you for your wonderful input here. Indeed, we all get frustrated from time to time when things just don’t happen as quickly as we want it.

A fine example you give here is loosing weight and hitting the plateau. Even worse…you knew about it! (Hate when stuff like that happens lol) But you didn’t stop you kept on going until you hit a point where the weight was shed and you had a muscular body.

It is like that with just about anything from our business to our wellness. I know, I’ve made plenty of mistakes in the past….I gave up…came to a stop and then had to start from square one all over again. To me it was a huge waste of my own energy.

Time and energy is important to think about especially in our own business. Three were plenty of times I wanted to give up or just throw my laptop out of the window. But, I used my handy little punching bag in my office and then kept moving on. The rewards outweighed the frustrations.

      Enjoy your week ahead,

    Hi Donna,

Loved this post and the awesome comparisons 🙂

You reminded me of my old physics lessons, which are so true the way you mentioned them with the wonderful examples of the truck and car. Yes, the drivers knew if they slowed the pace, it would result in wastage of time, energy, and effort.

It’s the same for bloggers, if you stop, you just stop! We have to keep moving and maintain the pace, the momentum is essential to survive in this online world, what they call consistency. Yes, so many take a break or eventually close their businesses and blogs, and perhaps they have their own reasons for it too. But if you slow your pace, it surely is asking for trouble!

One can think of so many more examples on the same line, if we put our thinking caps on, like forming a habit of writing daily, or perhaps go for your daily walks. You stop them, and you end up with writer’s block and gaining weight. But if you keep the momentum and wait patiently, you’d see results in time.

Thanks for sharing this with us. Have a nice week ahead (Hope you had a great Easter too!)

      Hi Harleena,

So happy you liked the comparisons I’ve used here. Momentum is important and it’s another way to look at consistency.

But when we think of the energy we use, we want to be like that 18 wheeler truck and not make a full stop…Rather, roll and not stop at all.

In some cases people do need to take a break, but as long as we let our followers know, we will be fine.

Yes, it comes down to what you mention to put our thinking caps on and forming a habit of our daily tasks no matter what niche we are in.

Enjoy your week and yes, Easter was great for us Thanks so much!
