Don’t Get Busy – Get Focused

This post was most recently updated on August 2nd, 2016

Don't Get Busy - Get FocusedDon’t Get Busy – Get Focused if you want to achieve your blogging goals.

Focus on the process

Don’t Get Busy – Get Focused with your blogging business.

I’ve told you before why busy bloggers can be underachievers.

I understand that you want to make your blog successful.

I know you’d like to start building it into a profitable business instead of a casual pastime or hobby.

I completely understand these things because they’re common reasons people engage me as a blogging coach, or why they buy my information courses or join my membership site.

Special: Start Your New Blog… 3 Easy Steps

I’ve Heard It All Before

You are not alone.

Most bloggers want these things, but don’t know how to make them happen.

So, when I take on a new client or student, what do I tell them?

The same as I’d tell you.

How can you relieve the pit in your stomach that you feel when yet another week, another month goes by and you’re still not getting the results you want or expected?

I can hear you telling me how many courses you’ve purchased to learn the step by step methods to successful blogging.

I understand that you’ve done what all the experts have told you to do.

I know you’ve read the “how to” blog posts from the big guys, and watched their videos telling you how easy it is.

Special: Learn To Blog My Way. FREE Guide Shows You How I Built My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

I empathize with you when you feel deflated and glicky (my word) every time you hear another pro brag about how much they earned last month, or with their last product launch, or from mega affiliate sales.

Heck, you just want a tiny piece of that, right?

Why is it so hard?

Of all the things you tell me, I especially appreciate how hard you’ve been working to build a wonderful blog that brings in a nice amount of profit and commission… not to get rich on, but it sure would be sweet to ditch the day job and start living that “laptop lifestyle” you hear so much about.

Don’t Get Busy – Get Focused

So, here’s the very first thing I’m going to tell you.

Becoming a successful blogger does NOT require that you roll up your sleeves and get busy.

That surprises a lot of people.

But you see, one of the biggest reasons bloggers fail to build a business is because they don’t treat it like a business.

They treat it like a bunch of disconnected tasks that somehow will come together one day… like magic.

The problem with that strategy is that it will keep you busy, but there’s no magic at the end of the rainbow.

Joining 30 groups on Facebook and chatting all day with folks about your niche is a nice way to understand your target customer base.

But it can also take up many hours from your work day, make you feel crazy busy, and end up with zero… add it all up… “zero” results.

The kinds of results I’m talking about are the things that are part of a blogging business.

These results include things like building a list of subscribers, driving people to your landing pages and actually converting a certain percentage of them into buyers.

Now, sitting on Facebook all day will keep you really busy, but it won’t build a buyers base to fuel your business.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

Remember, blogging is a business.

To run your blogging business successfully, you need to get less busy and become more focused… much more focused.

Get Focused

You’re tired of the treadmill, aren’t you?

  • Comment on a lot of blogs
  • Share posts on Twitter and Facebook
  • Put up a YouTube video
  • Post something on LinkedIn
  • Buy a new course on List Building
  • Hunt down some affiliate product that you think people will buy
  • Do some searches for new optin form builders
  • Back up your WordPress site
  • Check your Google Analytics
  • Don’t forget to write your next blog post

All these, and many more activities keep you so busy you’re about to bust.

It’s no wonder you feel depleted and overwhelmed at times.

Then you watch a video where somebody’s telling you how easy it is to make $10,000 a month.

Back off everybody!

It’s time to get focused on the things that will actually build your business.

What does that mean?

That, of course, is the next question from my clients.

I’m sure it’s your next question, too.

Special: Learn To Blog My Way. FREE Guide Shows You How I Built My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

The Answer Is Simple

  1. Focus on creating valuable content.
  2. Focus on driving traffic steadily to your content.
  3. Focus on converting that traffic into buyers.

That’s it.

Focus on those 3 things.

They’re not tricks or tips or tactics.

They are processes.

They are the solid processes you must master to build a successful blogging business.

Until you do, you’ll remain busy, but unfocused.

I guarantee that while you’re busy all day doing all the other stuff, those 3 critical processes are going largely ignored.

The reason is that while they are simple, they are not easy to implement.

You probably don’t even know how to go about implementing them.

That’s your challenge.

Special: Start Your New Blog… 3 Easy Steps

Not finding more things to keep you busy, but learning how to do those things that will make a real difference and focusing almost exclusively on them.

Believe me, when you start focusing on the right things, you’ll be amazed at the shift in your business model and your mindset.

That’s why I say…

Are you ready to start running a successful blogging business?

If so, then Don’t Get Busy – Get Focused.

Your Blog Is A Sales Funnel

Does my message in this post resonate with you?

Are you overwhelmed?

Are you ready to back off some of the “busy,” and start getting more focused?

I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.

    Hi Donna

Message received and you are so right that focus does have its benefits. You drilled down the activities to three key processes which is just cool. I guess it is time for me to be focussed.

Thank you for sharing. Take Care

Don’t get busy… I like that. You can be busy doing NOTHING or busy doing something. Countless days Donna I have sat on Facebook… looked at this…. looked at this…. watching this… clicked this…. and before I know it… it’s 1am! What have i done with the day? Wasted it on irrelevant stuff. Instead of getting busy doing productive things I have succumbed to Facebook Life…. Well let me tell you not anymore! I am going to get busy living my LIFE. Getting busy promoting ME not Facebook.. getting busy raising MY profile and social status and not the platform I will use. I have started tonight by watching Tony Robbins on Netflix.. ‘I am Not Your Guru’.. Personal Development here I come !!

Hi Donna. There are so many little things that we do that can eat up our time. Each time I start a task, I ask myself how it will move my business toward one of my goals. I try to keep a balanced mix of working toward long-term and short-term goals. If they task doesn’t take me a step closer then I don’t do it. Some things you have set a time-limit on, like social media. I try not to spend more than 20 or 30 minutes on Facebook or Twitter each day.

      Hi Ben,

Very wise decisions you are making to use your time effectively. I too ask myself the same questions when starting a task. Once you have that in your mindset, it does become a habit … a good one to do.

Many can get caught up on Facebook and other sites, but keeping a time limit is a very wise thing to do. I too keep it to about 30 or less minutes a day at different intervals of the day. I can keep up that way.

Thanks so much for your input,

    Hi Donna,

    Great headline – simple works!

Yes, we have to avoid ‘busywork’ like the plague. Even though it may be a comfortable and pleasant activity, it’s a wealth killer.

So what are the productive activities we should be focusing on? Like you say it’s about traffic leads and sales. That’s why we have to treat blogging as a business.

You made a point about people who spend lots of time in FB groups, chatting to members etc, and getting zero results. This is probably due to lack of a sound strategy. And if they have one, poor execution will probably be the problem. I do well from engaging one on one on Facebook and Twitter.

Like most people, I don’t mind spending time growing my business as long as time invested yields a worthwhile result.

    Thanks Donna

      Hi Kim,

I like that phrase “wealth killer” and it is so true.

Facebook can also be a time killer, but if we have control on the time we spend there, we can make it productive.

I love chatting with people there about their lives, milestones, their dogs and diets…all that. It does bring us closer as humans. But if I spent too much time there, I would be busy wasting my day.

Great input here and I thank you,

    Hi Donna

    Great post as always.

You have given us three golden rules that can be so effective if you follow them consistently.

This is very valuable. Sometimes when your efforts are getting nowhere you need a simple but powerful formula like this one to identify where you are going wrong.

Each one of the three points comes with its own challenges. Driving traffic is maybe the most difficult and that is why I appreciate the links in your post pointing to one of your resources for achieving this.

Focus and commitment rule in online marketing. There is no shortcut.

    Thanks for posting.

      Hi Igert,

Indeed, there is no shortcut! We all have those times where we feel things aren’t going where we want, but we cannot give up.

Driving traffic can be so difficult to do and then conversion… But we do have to remember that it takes time and persistence. We cannot let our emotions control us.

Being overwhelmed can be a good teacher. It gets you so frustrated that you just have to straighten things out. Indeed..Focus is the key. Just focus on the things you want to accomplish and the rest can take a back seat.

I’ve been focusing for the past two months with a one on one coach that is pushing me to do products and straighten out my entire sales funnel and pages. It is a lot of work but I feel like I’m shaking the dust off the rug lol.

I’m so happy this encouraged you. Your fifth year of blogging and still learning? Girl…me too. There is NEVER enough to learn. It makes us better at what we do.

Ha Donna as always great value to this post. It hit right for me once I am done here I am heading to backup my WP. I have been putting it away. I have had my share of unbackup files not applying. Hi Amaka,

Indeed Focus IS the key for bloggers. It does get easy once you decide to put things in order of importance. What you want to accomplish and work towards that.

There will always be distractions, it is how we deal with them that counts. We have to see our blog as our business. When we do, kids, friends, etc can be controlled. They see you sit there and think you are not working. Lay down the law of the house and it can work.

Don’t work harder, work smarter is my motto. I agree, sometimes the whole internet thing can seem overwhelming. There can be so much to do but the key is to be focused, as you rightly say. I have a plan, always have a plan, I do what is on my list, no more until the list if finished, then I can play if I want to, but I focus on my tasks first, the other stuff waits, it’s like a reward for my focused working anyway!

    Enjoy the journey!

Hi Donna, I’ve had a clear weekend without working on tasks I had to complete to meet deadlines. It’s the first time in quite a while. I’ve been working hard on focusing and it’s paying dividends already.

It’s working on my mindset, through mindfulness training and that’s helping me become aware of when I’m straying off task. What’s more I have a clearer picture of what I want and need to work on.

I was well and truly ready to “back off some of the busy”.

    Hi Donna!

You tackled one of the hardest topics in blogging because there are so many people out there giving so called ‘great advice’. You mentioned all of this advice in your busy treadmill list.

I like most in your post:

‘They’re not tricks or tips or tactics.

    They are processes.’

Blogging needs the steady flow and consistency of a process. But so many people don’t have the patience for a process. I have fallen off the wagon and got tired myself, I have to confess. Luckily, I got back up 🙂

Most people are not telling the truth you told us, cause they want to sell the tricks and tactics.

Thanks Donna for this fantastic post and for still being here and inspiring us.

You are so correct that blogging needs steady flow and consistency of process. Thank goodness you came back!

Even here, in this post it may sound easy, but it is work. To do the work we have to be dedicated to it and have a good time management plan.

I can sell courses, coach others and so on, but if they don’t want to act upon it, then they are just wasting their money and my time.

When I hire coaches, and I do all the time… I am right there acting upon ever step of the way to get my money’s worth lol. It is a constant learning curve as we grow our business.

    Hey Donna,

The topic you have chosen has grabbed the base of every blogger in the blosphere. Most of the bloggers get tired to those old formulas. They try to drive traffic to their blog by blog commenting, sharing their post and more. But they fail.

People enter in many Facebook groups and waste their time. Remaining busy isn’t the solution. The perfect strategy is needed. The creation of quality content is needed.

    Such an awesome post.
    Thanks for reminding me.

      Hi Ravi,

We can write good content, share it all over the place but the most important thing we all need to work on is monetization. Why else would we be spending all our time here? Well…some do for fun, but bloggers need to be focusing more of their time on marketing.

I was answering all these comments and then had to get up, go for a swim, and re-focus to tend to my latest optins and welcome them. Back here to finish — It is all about prioritizing.

Donna — I always like to say that movement doesn’t mean progress. You can be really busy, as you point out, and it seems like you’re making progress but it’s the equivalent of moving things around your desk. You may have tidied up but it’s the same stuff. I think a problem for many bloggers is they don’t what to sell. It’s easier to do the busy work then to focus on what will make you money.

Time heals all wounds lol. When I had the AHA moment that I was busy pushing things around instead of being productive and monetizing…It was time to “go back to school” I had hired personal coaches and then went on my way.

I usually end up with a each 1 of those steps being 33 things to do.

And I am not sufficiently focused and my message is not yet clear enough not even to me

I can share with you what I do….I write a list. Each time I’m unclear, list writing does help. It is like talking it out to someone but we are doing it alone. Eventually I can find what it is that is so important and clarity comes.

Even when I write a blog post and want to convey a message. I will write pages of stuff and then have to read it and edit it to one simple one. Believe me I can go all over the place when I start writing…

      Hope this helps!

Excellent advice Donna and something we need to remind ourselves of literally on a daily basis. Blogging requires that we keep so many balls up in the air at the same time – or at least we fall into the trap of thinking that when we try to follow the advice of every expert we come across. Focus is the key to staying connected to our priorities.

Great post. I think the reason so many new bloggers get overwhelmed is that they try to chase a silver bullet that they’ve read about in a successful blogger’s post. Often it’s a product or a paid service (no huge surprise, huh?) but sometimes it’s just someone sharing something that worked for her or him in a very specific niche, specific timing and circumstances.

And even then, like you said, it’s always a process. It’s never a single event that made someone into a successful blogger. It’s so easy getting caught up chasing silver bullets and it can get immensely frustrating and get you burnt out.

On an entirely different topic, I’m so glad I found your blog. Whew. I just got back to blogging as a business (in addition to my main web publishing business) and I’m just relieved finally seeing other women of my age group (among the commenters here) I was beginning to feel too old! I’ll surely be back!

I’m glad you found me and welcome back to the blogging world. You will find other women in your age group that are my friends here and on the social sites. You are NEVER too old to come back. The blogging world used to be for the young set marketers, but now many businesses small to large are here on the blogging platform as part of their business.

    Hi Donna,

Great point, I think you’re right, many people who start a business, and especially an online business I would say, do not treat it like so, so they fail.

According to a good friend of ours who used to teach people how to develop a successful blog, she got very tired of the fact that her clients weren’t applying what she taught them to do. I think that’s very common, unfortunately.

You can hire all the coaches of the face of the earth, if you do not apply what you learn or follow the advice that you’re given, nothing is going to change for you.

    Great reminders here 🙂

      Hi Sylviane,

You hit the nail on the head here. You can hire all the coaches in the world, but if you don’t apply what you have learned, nothing is going to change.

As a coach or mentor we are in the position to teach others, but if they don’t want to apply it, there is nothing we can do about it after giving our all.

It’s like a person that is sick and goes to a doctor for a remedy. If they choose not to do it, they will stay sick. Not the Doctors fault.

      Have a great weekend,

Yep, you have a gift of laser focus. Thanks for sharing it with us in many, many ways. Sharing sure helps the learning process. Now perhaps focused action will suffice.

      Hi Paula,

I do try lol. Focus is something to take action on every day. I do stray because I’m human, but practicing mindfulness of being focused sure does help.

If we focus on everything we do and see it as the most important thing, whatever the task, will be easier to do.

Hello Donna, What a super post my friend! Such great advice-> Don’t Get Busy – Get Focused! And the only way to do so is like you said focus on creating content, focus on driving traffic to it then focus on converting that traffic into buyers.

Love it! You make it do sound so easy.
    Great Share
    Thanks,
    Chery :))

      Hi Chery,

Yes indeed…it does sound easy doesn’t it? But oh so true. If we only focus on that every day without distractions, we can get a business rolling. Indeed, it takes time and work, but when that is focused, we find it will work.

Great seeing you here….I’m following your Facebook updates and am so glad you are having a great time this Summer.

As usual, Donna, you have taken a somewhat complex topic (blogging success) and broken it down into concise important steps to focus on.

I see bloggers and online marketers all the time that do not understand that busy doesn’t necessarily mean productive activity. They are crazy “busy,” but when the sales, new recruits, site visitors don’t increase as they thought they would, they say, “Blogging doesn’t work; it’s a waste of time.” You and I know this is not true! They are busy but doing the wrong things. It’s easy to get frustrated and discouraged. To be successful, these challenging times are usually a part of the journey. As a blogger, the journey never ends, it has twists and turns, but it never reaches a particular destination.

What I love about your posts is how direct, down-to-earth, and accurate they are but they are also exactly what bloggers need to hear — whether they want to or not! 🙂

      Hi Deborah,

Thank you so much for that feedback here. Yes I’m pretty direct and say it like it is. I do try very hard to make things simple. Like I did here. One little message that someone can take and apply. That’s what its all about when writing content.

I do see some bloggers get frustrated because they are not focused. They seem to get distracted by their own blog itself. When, in reality our blogs are there to help others a bit, but the monetization of it is the place we need to focus on.

Blogging sure is a journey with it’s twists and turns, but it is an extension of our own growth in whatever niche we are in.

This post really hit home for me – staying focused has been a BIG problem! It helps to break it down to keeping my eyes on creating great content, driving traffic to it, and converting that traffic. Now THAT is something I can focus on. Thank you!!

      Hi Deborah,

If you create your content, set that aside and spend more time on driving and converting traffic, you will feel a whole lot better!

Focusing on just that alone and making it a habit to do every day will eventually save time in the long run.

    Hi Donna,

Wow! This is a very motivational post. A lot of us try so hard to be successful at blogging, that we exhaust ourselves. Only if we became focused rather than burning all our energy into things that we don’t really need to do, will make things a lot easier.

I loved the ‘getting focused checklist’ that talks about the very basic, yet important things that should be followed.

This post was really helpful Donna. Thanks and have a wonderful day ahead!

      Hi Arpit,

Indeed, getting focused will save so much time and energy. When we are scattered and allow ourselves to be distracted, not much will be accomplished.

But..when we make an effort to focus our productivity will rise. That will cause that “feel good” feeling and we end up having more time for ourselves.
