Rank Your Blog High In Google Search

This post was most recently updated on August 6th, 2016

Rank your blog high in Google searchYou want to Rank Your Blog High In Google Search if you’re looking for lots of free traffic.

Bloggers and website owners are always looking for ways to get traffic to their sites.

The more traffic you can get to your site, the more popular it will be.

The more popular your site becomes, the greater the likelihood of you getting the chance to convert that traffic into loyal readers, subscribers, customers and clients.

Good things happen when you learn to drive traffic to your site.

It’s particularly nice when it’s free traffic.

Targeted Traffic

Not all website traffic is equal.

Targeted traffic is far superior to random, or even mass traffic.

Getting a lot of people to your blog or website is only meaningful if it consists of people who are interested in what you do, in your topic of interest or your niche.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

If you have an e-Commerce site that sells photography instruments and supplies, it really doesn’t do much for you if people visiting your site have no interest in photography.

That’s why, in that case, it would be so important to “target” only people interested in photography.

It’s the same principle for bloggers.

If your blog is teaching people about post surgical rehabilitation, you don’t want to attract an audience comprised of people interested primarily in exercise or losing weight.

The traffic you target must be congruent to the theme of your blog or website in order to convert it into a loyal readership, visitorship and customer base.

Paid vs Free Traffic

Running paid ads on platforms like Google or Facebook will certainly get traffic to your site.

If you want a large volume of traffic, then paid traffic is the best route.

If you want highly targeted traffic, though, nothing is better than free traffic.

That’s because you can put so much more “qualification” structure into your free content than you can in a sales page or squeeze page.

The content in your blog posts can speak in detail to what you do, and therefore, can be written specifically for your target audience.

When you share that blog post, or ideas from it, on free sites like Forums, Facebook and other social media sites, you will attract mostly people who are keenly interested in what you’re doing, what you’re talking about, what you’re sharing.

That kind of targeted traffic is far more valuable to your end goals of converting them into real business, than paid traffic.

Special: Learn To Blog My Way. FREE Guide Shows You How I Built My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

Rank Your Blog High In Google Search

Google Search is absolutely the best source of free traffic.

That’s because you’re not searching for targeted traffic, it’s searching for you.

People go to Google to solve a problem or learn something.

They are searching for solutions.

When they find your article or website dedicated to offering that solution, they will be an excellent source of targeted traffic.

In addition, because Google Search is so universal, you can even get as big or bigger numbers of people visiting your site.

The problem is in trying rank your blog high in Google Search so that your target audience can easily find you.

Here’s a few things you can do to help rank your blog high in Google Search.

SEO

The most popular method for getting your blog ranked high is to perform some basic SEO (Search Engine Optimization) methods.

There are many SEO methods and many are quite complex.

Basically, it breaks down into two categories, though.

These are commonly referred to as “on page” and “off page” optimization.

On Page Optimization

On page optimization is the method of structuring your web pages and content to get high ranking.

Keywords

The first thing you should do is to make sure you have keywords placed prominently in your articles and blog posts.

Keywords will tell Google Search just what you are offering to their customers, namely, people doing the searching.

People search by keywords, so you must have them in your blog posts if you want people to find them via Google Search.

A free and easy way to find the right keywords for your blog post, is to use Google Keyword Planner.

It will help you find the keywords that will attract your target audience.

Titles

Your title is critical.

It gives Google Search a good idea about what your blog post is about.

That information is then used to show your article to your target audience.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

For instance, this article is about how to “Rank Your Blog High In Google Search.”

There are two main keywords phrases here:

Rank Your Blog High, on Google Search

Take your time and be very mindful when writing your blog post titles, and be sure to include keywords in your title that will attract your target audience, and that will, of course, accurately describe what your article is about.

Meta Description

The meta description of your blog post is the little snippet that appears next to the title when people are researching your keywords via Google Search.

Here’s what a Google Search entry looks like…

Rank Your Blog High In Google Search

The first part (in bold) is your title, the second is your meta description.

I strongly recommend you use a WordPress plugin like SEO by Yoast to easily modify your meta description and make it Google Search friendly.

You can learn more about how to structure you meta descriptions to make convert your Google Search entries into free traffic to your blog or website on the Yoast blog.

This is my basic advice on page optimization strategy, but you can learn much more from Robin Khokhar, a much trusted expert on SEO.

Off Page Optimization

While you can do things on your own blog or website to help it rank high in Google Search, you need help from others for off page optimization.

When people are talking about your blog in social media, or on their own blogs, Google Search is listening.

The more people talk about your blog, the more they link to it from their own sites or from social media sites, the easier it will be to Rank Your Blog High In Google Search.

If we spend too much time on it, then where does it get us? If it is not putting money in the piggy bank, then it is wasteful.

    Fantastic post Donna!

Getting your site to rank high on Google is a definite way to get more “targeted” visitors to your site 🙂

Using a tool like Google keyword planner is important because it will help you to figure out what people are searching for, so in turn you can write a specific blog post to that specific keyword.

It just makes more sense to write your post about a specific keyword that people are “already” searching for, so it will be easier for people to find “your” solution 🙂

Awesome tips! Always learn something from your posts, my friend, thank you!

On page Keywords Google Search for what you are offering to people doing the searching
Use Google Keyword Planner. It’s so true. I just wrote an article with one keyword in the title and did my search in KP to find that three other keywords would be much better. Not forgetting the meta description. Need to get the Yoast plug in. Wrote it down.

    Hi Donna,

I’ll be the first one to admit that SEO and keywords have never been fun for me. At ALL.
But yes, I know they’re important.

I also struggle a bit with titles. I had read a post on David Hartshorne’s blog “Byte of Data” about titles and it’s fantastic, so I’ll follow some of his tips.
My challenge is that what I want to say in the post doesn’t always translate easily into a catchy title with how-tos, etc. Some do, but some don’t. I’ll have to keep working on it.

Thankfully I’ve gotten traffic from building relationships, commenting and some social media sharing, but I know others may not be able to find my work in search engines.

I’ll have to spend more time with the keywords and other technical aspects of content creation, so I appreciate what you’ve shared here.

      Hi Dana,

I have to agree that SEO hasn’t been fun for me either in the past. But since I’ve been applying it, I have seen the difference in readership, visits and even opt-ins (happy dance)

Titles are one of the most difficult things to do. I usually don’t get too crazy about them…just bang ’em out and sometimes they are a big hit. I too am still working on them lol.

Commenting is still the “backbone of our blogs” as I always say time and time again. It is traffic that is real….people having a genuine concern.

As for Keywords…it can take up too much time for me…that’s why I use the plugin Yoast. Sometimes I argue with it….”come on….I did what you want!” But when those green lights all go on, it is a good feeling to press publish.

    Hi Donna,

    Good to be back 🙂

Wonderful post indeed, and something that every blogger wants to learn how to do – rank high in the searches!

It’s certainly not easy, but if you learn the basics and know the right ways, you can get a lot done. However, with SEO forever changing, one has to stick to the root base and do what is essential for our blogs, just as you rightly mentioned. Sometimes certain keywords rank, even though you don’t target them, while at other times, even the ones targeted, don’t make it to the top. I’ve even noticed at times, some posts with no keywords and no SEO have made it to the first page of Google, so one just needs to hit and try to test what works for us, isn’t it?

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

    Hi Donna

    A really helpful post here

One of the techniques I’ve used with good results is to create content around valuable, but easy to rank keyword terms. Sometimes the blog posts ranked in just a week or so.

It’s also good to see the effect that social signals have on rankings now. Years ago – as you know – backlinking was all the rage with the result often being that rubbish content was getting ranked simply because it had more backlinks than other more worthy content.

Using related keywords helps as does internal linking to other posts

Nevertheless, I don’t think it smart for bloggers to become slaves to the search engines. When that happens creativity often suffers.

You’ve covered the key points very well here. Perfect for newbies and more experienced hands alike

It is important to have some SEO in our content, but never write for the sake of it. There were so many people asking me about Google that I did have to cover the many ways of “ranking” because it was a concern. I’m doing it all week long here and on LinkedIn.

It is fun to see our blog popping up on that first page of Google or Youtube… The two biggest search engines.

At least Google is taking account of similar words now so there’s no need to keep repeating the same words over and over. I never did that anyway as it always seemed so unnatural.

I do try to make sure the Yoast Green Light is on before I publish but I often only one word in the keyword section so I get enough density 🙂 Because I always add an image to the top, I fail the “keyword in first sentence” part.

Also SEO can help with getting organic traffic. Using plugins like SEO by Yoast help search engines to drive tagreed traffic to your site. Especially with using certain keywords that relate to each other throughout your post.

I also like to use headline analizer with keywords that would attract the right traffic. I mainly use coschedule’s headline analyzer which give you the great details about what you need to do to improve your headlines.

Hi Donna. I don’t need, or want, lots of traffic. I really only need one person to visit my website each day, as long as that one person makes a large purchase. Of course, getting lots of traffic increases the odds of that one person showing up.

When I first started out online, before I added my blog, I tried Google PPC and did pretty well. I almost broke even each month. That’s when I found out about SEO and have kept that in the back of my mind and gone after only free traffic ever since. People get all excited about SEO and find it overwhelming, but it really isn’t. You still do research on your topic and you still write for your audience. People approach SEO like they are trying to convince Google to send them traffic, maybe even trick Google into sending traffic. That’s not what it’s about. All you are doing with SEO is making sure that Google’s automated systems can easily figure out what your page or post is about. Make your page title, meta title and meta description clear so that a machine can understand them. Same thing for the H2, H3, etc subheadings. Put a good description of your images in the alt tag so that Google knows what they are about. They are the same things that you need to do for your readers as well so that they can scan your content and see what it’s about.

Ok, I was only kidding about not wanting lots of traffic. I’ll take it. But I really want that one person.

Oh my goodness that Google PPC….I never tried that thank goodness. I have heard from many that it was like a vacuum cleaner sucking out the money in your pocket.

SEO has, in the past, turned me off because people complicated it so much that I just couldn’t stand it. But just following the above mentioned and especially on our images….that will be fine.

It really doesn’t take much, just using what you mention and there ya go.

SEO is complex Donna and you’ve made it easy for the street guy to understand.

There is a lot of information out there on On-Page SEO making it a quick step for everyone to grab. But Off-Page is tough. You’ll have to position yourself to attract those votes and that’s where the hard part is.

People try to make it easy through guest posting, blog commenting, forum postings, web 2.0 profiles, etc but Google is still wise. But I think the best way forward is long tail keywords as those are easy to rank without much of Off-Page effort.

Another area people really don’t talk about is Technical SEO. I think that’s the foundation for both On-Page and Off-Page.

If your server is hell slow and you have some poorly coded theme and tons of unnecessary plugins, every other SEO exercise may hit straight against the rock.

What do you think about this technical SEO ?

      Hi Enstine,

Thank you for adding such value to this post. Yes…speed and that technical side of SEO. If our server is slow…we will end up in dead water. That is one of those things we have to make sure is running smooth. It is like checking the oil in the car. If you are nearly empty….the car won’t do it’s job well.

As for SEO itself, I never was a raving fan, but know it is important an yes, had to simplify it because most of my peeps don’t even want to hear about it.

Off page it is more difficult because it takes time, but with a good system one sets themselves up with and persistence and patience, it can be amazing.

    Hi Donna,

Timely read as I’m doubling down on search traffic. I ranked #1 for the weird term “paradise blog” and for a few other retiring to tropics type terms, so I see the potential there. Your note of doing the onsite and offsite stuff is the key; meta descriptions, keywords, really good, clear titles and doing comments or guest posting helps a ton.

As Don says, and you as well, it IS a clarity thing. Getting clearer on your blog and every single thing you post creates ease in setting up posts to do well on Google.

    Thanks much.

      Hi Ryan,

Exactly! Clarity is key on what we write in order to get seen on Google. That is so awesome that you ranked #1 for the term “paradise blog”

There are so many that forget those meta descriptions. When I mention it to others I get the deer in the headlights look. lol

    Hi Saurav,

Indeed, it does start with knowing your niche. For new bloggers sometimes it takes a while to “settle in” and find that one specific niche

Then we work so hard to help them with our blog posts. And of course, having an opt-in is always great to build your list.

    Hey Donna,

Every blogger wishes to get the highest Google ranking. But there are many aspects which should be taken care of.

SEO should be done properly. Some people do keyword stuffing to make their post SEO friendly.

Though the paid traffic may bring a lots people to your blog but you know, the traffic you get directly from the search engine or what we call it an organic traffic is the best.

    Thanks for this wonderful article.
Hope you are having a great time.

      Hi Ravi,

I rather have organic traffic than anything else. It shows a genuine interest in what we are doing and then what we have to offer.

I’ve done both. The only time paid traffic worked for me is by either boosting a Facebook post or by getting on a very high quality targeted email niche.

I would be embarrassed to admit how long I ignored SEO! Eventually, I got it and started paying attention, and am I ever glad I did! It’s funny how that little thrill of seeing your post near or at the top of page one a Google search never seems to fade. 🙂 Images are great sources as well. The other day I was trolling looking for inspiration for an upcoming article and when the Google gods spit out the images for my keyword search one of my own custom images was very first on the page! I got such a kick out of it I took a screen shot to save for one of those days when I’m kicking myself for being so stupid about something. Great advice as always Donna!

      Hi Marquita,

Don’t be embarrassed because I ignored SEO for a long time also. Maybe it is due to the fact that when I started blogging, everything was so SEO rich, nothing I read made any sense lol.

Indeed, images are a great way to climb the Google ladder. It is so amazing when we search for something and see ourselves there isn’t it?

A few times people PM me and tell me they saw me on the first page of Google. Great…but did I do anything with that in the past….no.

      Now I know…It took a while lol

    Hi, Donna

I have love/hate relationship with SEO. First, I really intimated and overwhelmed by SEO because of so much information. However, I know it is a good tool for free traffic.

Now I am making the determination to master it. I did install Yoast SEO recently. Instead of trying to get it all at once, each article will be full understood before I will move on to the next one. Hopefully, the numbers of subscribers will be increased to desired level in near future as I will apply what I learn about SEO.

    Thanks for the article.

    Fantastic week ahead.

      H Stella,

That’s exactly how I did it myself. When I installed Yoast I looked to see if that green light went on. When it didn’t I went back to my content and tweaked it a bit. Before you know it, you will be writing with SEO in mind.

I never liked it either, but know it is important to do. Yoast has taught me so much!
