Influencer Marketing To Grow Your Blog

This post was most recently updated on July 8th, 2017

Influencer Marketing To Grow Your BlogUsing Influencer Marketing To Grow Your Blog requires building workable strategies.

There are several mistakes I’ve seen bloggers make in the burst of interest surrounding influencer marketing.

Bloggers are apt to overly quantify, randomly apply and trivialize their influencer marketing strategies.

To understand thèse missteps, let’s start with a definition of influencer marketing that we can work with.

Special: Set Up Your New Blog Today… 3 Easy Steps

Influencer Marketing Defined

As the name suggests, influencer marketing is a strategy of increasing your blog and brand following by tapping into the resources of influencers.

An influencer is someone who has these characteristics…

  • sizable reach,
  • recurring audience,
  • ability to create awareness, and
  • ability to move people to take action.

Here’s how to use influencer marketing to grow your blog.

  • identify influencers in your niche,
  • give them something they value,
  • develop a reciprocal relationship.

Identify Influencers In Your Niche

Make it your business to learn who the influencers in your niche are.

You can find them

  • dominating social media channels,
  • writing top blogs and
  • creating popular products and services that your prospects consume.

Special: Set Up Your New Blog Today… 3 Easy Steps

Get Their Attention

Here’s how to get their attention.

Hint:

Give Them Something They Value

Reach out to your target influencers with value.

Share their blog posts on social media sites, and participate in

  • their comment streams,
  • product launches,
  • contests, and
  • other things they value.

Find what’s important to an influencer, and make it important to you.

Amplify and publicize it in any way you can, and preferably, in ways that are unique to you.

Develop A Reciprocal Relationship

When your target influencers take notice of the value you have given them, they will want to reciprocate in some way.

It’s not so much that they are appreciative and thankful (though they may be)… as it that they want to continue and foster the relationship that you initiated, and that they have now come to value.

Special: Set Up Your New Blog Today… 3 Easy Steps

Common Mistakes That Bloggers Make

In your enthusiasm to use influencer marketing to grow your blog, avoid making mistakes that could ultimately frustrate you and undermine your strategy.

Don’t Overly Quantify

Don’t obsess on metrics and statistics.

As influencer marketing increases in popularity and buzz, you will see more and more emphasis on quantifying the influence levels of influencers.

  • how many followers do they have?
  • what is the conversion rate of their blog post offers?
  • what is their social reach?
  • and so forth and so on.

Resist the temptation to follow just “big” influencers, though.

Sure, they may have the numbers to chase, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are a perfect blend for your niche and for your specific audience and readership.

You might strike a much more mutually beneficial relationship with a “mid-level” or even “mini” influencer who makes more sense for your blog, and may offer you more joint venture and cross promotional opportunities.

And don’t forget, as everyone and his brother flocks to the “big” influencers in your niche, it will be increasingly difficult for you to get into their sights, let alone their good graces.

Don’t Randomly Apply

Don’t try to create a random influencer campaign.

In other words, don’t just start reaching out to people who look like influencers every time you visit a blog or social page.

Do this with a clear strategy and within sensible limits.

Trying to build a meaningful and reciprocal relationship with influencers requires a lot of effort and dedication.

Develop a strategy to build a relationship with a manageable number of influencers.

What number is “manageable?”

It depends on how much time you will devote to this strategy, and how deeply you intend to develop the relationships.

I recommend that you pick a small number of influencers to market yourself to, and let it increase slowly as you get the hang of it.

I started with the number “10” in mind, but I didn’t actually reach that number for several months into my campaign.

The main point is to focus narrowly on your target influencer list, just like you laser target your blog audience, and buyer/client prospects.

Don’t just try to get everyone to notice you because it will dilute your efforts and make your campaigns weak.

Special: Set Up Your New Blog Today… 3 Easy Steps

Don’t Trivialize

Finally, don’t trivialize the relationships you build with influencers.

Don’t take them for granted.

Don’t work to get someone to help you promote your new product or service, then disappear from their blogs and social media feeds after you achieved some fleeting success, or after you failed to gain any immediate traction.

Influencer marketing is for long term.

Continue to build the relationship as an ongoing part of your blogging business, not just some quick hit and miss marketing scheme to tap into only when you have a special launch or project.

Start Your First (or next) Influencer Marketing Campaign

If you want to get off on the right foot, I highly recommend that you use a spreadsheet to map out your exact influencer marketing strategy.

Pick a number of influencers to target in your campaign.

Let’s go with the number “10” since that is what I used for my first influencer marketing campaign.

At the top of your spreadsheet, list the 10 bloggers you will target.

Your vertical list should comprise the activities that will comprise your influencer marketing campaign.

These should include things like…

  • Visit their blog, daily
  • Tweet each blog post
  • Facebook share
  • Google+ share
  • LinkedIn share
  • Write a blog post featuring your target influencer

This is just a rudimentary list.

Think of all the things that might work for you… all the things that will tap into your special skills and knowledge.

Perform each activity every day.

As you do, your target influencers will start to notice the consistent, steadily dripped value you are offering them.

If they don’t take the initiative to reciprocate in some manner, then you take the lead and ask them to.

Suggest to them that you write a guest post on their blog, for instance, or ask them to share a blog post you wrote that mentions them in some way.

My Secret Weapon

I actually stumbled upon a special technique that has worked wonderfully for me, and I invite you to hack it.

First, click the video below for my short interview with Rebekah Radice in which we talk specifically about this strategy.

The linchpin in my strategy is Twitter.

I chose Twitter to hyper-market to top influencers because it’s such a fluid, constant, ongoing sharing platform.

That gives me the opportunity to do a lot of sharing with a lot of people, very frequently.

Also, Twitter is easy.

Just a few characters and you’ve got a tweet.

Because it’s such a fluid platform, the influencers I target get to see a lot of activity from my sharing, on an ongoing basis.

My “Secret Weapon” is Post Planner.

My favorite features of Post Planner are:

Easy Content Posting:

Posting content lies right within the Post Planner dashboard, so you can always give your followers a good mix of proven content.

With Post Planner you can FIND all the content you need IN ONE PLACE.

Just add your favorite accounts from Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and your favorite hashtags, keywords and blogs. Then cherry pick the best content to BLOW UP your engagement!

You can choose

  • Photos to connect,
  • Articles to share value, and
  • Statuses to start conversations.

The content is always at your fingertips — with star ratings to help you choose.

Build Engagement:

Post Planner’s star ratings make it easier by helping you choose the most engaging content available — so you don’t have to hesitate or second-guess.

And engagement, after all, is the essence of influencer marketing.

The app shows you top performing content for any social account, hashtag or topic — all ranked by virality, so you can confidently predict engagement.

It actually helps you FIND scientifically proven content that skyrockets engagement, boosts reach, and drives more traffic to your website from Facebook, Twitter & Pinterest.

Recycle Your Tweets:

And here’s my favorite feature that has made my influencer marketing campaigns go absolutely crazy.

With Post Planner, you can actually “recycle” your tweets.

Influencer Marketing To Grow Your Blog

Click the text above to read the details about recycling your tweets

True enough.

You can create, curate, craft and cadoozle (for the sake of alliteration) all your tweets in Post Planner.

Then tweet them out.

Sweet.

Then, after all that, simply hit a little toggle button thingy that puts your favorite tweets (or all of them) into “recycle” rotation.

That means, once you’ve sent out a tweet that tells the world about an influencer’s cool blog post, it won’t die in the tweet-trash bin.

It will get recycled for as long and as often as you like.

So your target influencer will keep seeing that you’ve tweeted about his/her post repeatedly.

And it’s all automated so it can be happening while you bathe (everybody says “while you sleep”… sounds so cliche).

So, learn more about it, and sign up right now.

Get your first (or next) influencer marketing campaign started in minutes.

Start Here: Post Planner

This is my affiliate link.

If you enroll with it, just let me know and I’ll personally help you build your first (or next) influencer marketing campaign.

When people ask me how I got to be a top influencer in social media, I tell them it’s simple. I just helped the people who were influential. I’m influential because I know influential people.

Today I look at the Top 10 Social Media Power Influencers list and think “there are 9 famous people and me”

Instead of approaching someone to add them to your network, or retweet your message, try seeing what they are doing (it’s right there on their feed) and doing what you can to help them. Answer their questions, sign up for their newsletter, tell people about their charity work and congratulate them when they have an achievement.

Some of used to are called “phony” and doing it without sincerity still is. However, with the open book dealing on social media today, you can really get to know someone and be seen as a resource before you ever ask for something. In fact, you may never have to ask.

Today. A typical meeting with an influencer includes them saying “and what can I do for you”

Your step by step methodology of explanation was excellent to see, and I clearly understand the concept of your article. Mostly I would like to share the idea which I like the most, but I wont think from the customer perspective. Maintaining a healthy relationship is a big marketing strategy. But finding the influencer who interested in sharing our content is little complicated. But for at this moment, I will work on this and manage a good relationship. Thanks for the informative post.

    Hi Donna,

Such a great post on using inffuencer marketing. I also enjoyed your interview with Rebeckah.

It can be so hard to get the attention of a an influencer in your niche. This is why it is so important to build up relationships with other bloggers. So many times I see people comment on other blogs and leave just a few words to try to get noticed. Most of the time this does not work and people can see this for what it really is.

If you are your real self, and speak in your own voice, I believe people can see the goodness in this and welcome your thoughts and respond to you in kind. I know I have tried to be this way. I like to let the person know that I really read their article, and took something away from it that I can either use myself, or share with others that need help.

I had not heard of Post Planner before, but after reading your article and listening to your interview with Rebekah, I am definitely going to give it a try. Marketing can be such a time consuming but necessary job and any help with this is much appreciated!

Thanks again Donna for this informative and helpful article and I hope you have a great week.

      Hi Rob,

You mention comments and that is one thing I truly believe in. If you leave a good comment on someone’s blog, you are going to get noticed. When done correctly and honestly, any person is going to be interested….from the newbie to the influencer. This is why I’m always stressing to leave a good comment.

Post Planner is awesome. It saves me so much time and energy. Plus it is easy to do and that’s what I like the best…saving time on learning curves. There are so many to do every day lol.

    Hi Donna,

A friend recently referred me to your blog and after reading this, I must commend you for the great job.

Building a relationship with a great influencer is like riding on the back of a giant. One recommendation and you’re suddenly big. But then, it takes a great deal of work, some of which you’ve mentioned here.

But the caveat is to create a first good impression by getting your details correctly. If you’re using one of their links in any of your article, do ensure it’s the correct one. It once scuttled my chances with one influencer.

    Thanks

    HI Dana,

It’s not so intimidating to reach out big influencers if you just remember that they’re only people like you and me and your next door neighbor.

In my offline consulting business, I speak with movie stars and famous personalities all the time. I think nothing of it.

I always remember one woman who used to call me to discuss things going on with “her job.” The way she talked about it, I thought she was a low wage attendant or some such thing. Then I learned that “her job” was the director of psychiatry for a major, world renowned institution.

    It’s all the perception.

Help people out and they’re there for you.

    No matter who they are.

If they don’t reciprocate after a while, move on to someone else.

    Hi Donna,

    As usual, great info.

It can feel a bit intimidating to try to connect with people who are considered influencers. I think the worst way to approach them (or anyone) is to try to sell them on you or anything else. We’re all people and we want to establish connections.

You’re an excellent example of someone who keeps it real, but who is perfectly capable of reaching those who have a large following. It’s because you’re authentic.

As far as recycling the Tweets, never knew about that, but it makes sense. I’ll delve into that further.

    Hey Donna,

One thing i point out that I totally agree with is to focus more on the “mid-level” or mini influencers. I found that usually they correlate with your blog more so than anything.

Also I see that most of the big influencers really don’t take notice of you like the mid-level and mini ones.

I also like your strategy of listing the 10 influencers to connect with. Staying connected is key. It may take a while to get noticed, but if you’re consistent, eventually they will notice you. From my own experience a few influencers actually shared a link to my blog.

I have used Post Planner in the past in it’s beginning stages, but I started using bufferapp which works great for me. One feature I liked in post planner was that it not only shared on social media, but also in different social groups that you were a part of. Does it still have this feature?

Thanks for sharing Donna! Have a great weekend!

      Hi Sherman,

Good thoughts on mid-level influencer marketing. I agree… that’s really where the action is, much more than with the Big Buys on top of the hill.

I think you’d see a lot of changes with Post Planner… like the ability to Recycle your posts automatically and as you design. Also, you can have your own branded “Share Bar” superimposed on posts you share, to further impress people with your personal brand, and give them strategic calls to action.

Not sure about the social groups sharing function, but I know even more changes are coming, like adding LinkeIn and Google+ and I think Pinterest to your automation streams.

You just might want to give it a peek again.

But I think the steps you mentioned to have a small impact are good like:

    Daily visiting their blog.
    Participate in comments.

I am not a blogger, neither I am an influencer :), I am an education startup founder and I am into digital marketing industry since more than last 9 years. In last one year I have seen many bloggers, product marketers using this to promote their products or building links but sorry to say that Influencer marketing by nature is relationship building and if you don’t have anything worthy of offering then most probably this is not going to work. Hi Lea,

It sure is becoming so popular for people to connect with mid stream influencers. The guru status is dying out and they are coming to the mid streamers. Ahhh…love how the trends change all the time.

    Hi Donna,

Awesome stuff! I will always trust influencer advice from a Superhero 😉 Really though, you and Rebekah make spot on points.

Do not obsess over metrics! I just received an email from a higher up in Microsoft. She asked me to a meet and greet with a best selling author in NYC today. Kelli and I just spent the full day enjoying GORGEOUS weather in NJ today so I didn’t read the email in time and missed the event…but when I checked this person’s Twitter account she had a few thousand followers. But she’s one of their influencer seekers/searchers and a few minutes on her Twitter feed shows she’s connected with world renowned brands in media and the like.

Feel influencers out by their energy. That’s the *it* factor you and Rebekah have in ample supply.

    Thanks for sharing!

      Hi Ryan,

The weather is too good where you are and enjoy! So you missed something…I think it was pretty rude to tell you so soon. Seems like they wee trying to get as many Influencers like you to shout out the word. Too bad they didn’t give you more notice.

Oh well…you had a good day and that’s all that matters. You followed your own path and that’s where it’s at.

Glad you enjoyed me and Rebekah chatting.

    Hi Elise,

Indeed there ARE two sides of the coin here. The influencer getting his/her word out to more people and vice versa.

Indeed, magic is not in the numbers, but in the quality of people we engage with.

This is a very informative post that I believe will help many to see the two sides of the coin…the influencer and those using the influencer.

I especially like that you point out that the magic is not always in the fancy numbers. We also need to look at interaction and more.

    Hi Donna,
Great post, love that your tool is Twitter 🙂 I agree with Enstine, you can’t just go after the big fishes. There are many great little fishes in the online sea. It takes time like Enstine says to grow your following and to connect with others in your niche.
I’ve found over the past year a lot of folks left my niche and now new ones are jumping in. We have to be ready to continually grow our lists and followers. It’s an ever changing world.
Thanks for all the advice in this one Donna and the video with Rebekah which I have to go back and view 🙂 Have a wonderful week ahead!

      Hi Lisa,

Going after great little fishes is the new trend. Big fishes are looking for people just like us, who have been around for a while and have a nice following.

It takes time to grow and if we pinpoint who we want to “hang out’ with that will benefit us, it’s a good thing.

Glad you liked Rebekah’s advice. PostPlanner works so well with Twitter as well as Facebook. You know how in the past, I had that love/hate for Twitter….Now it’s a breeze. The best tool I’ve ever put my hands on.

    Hey Donna,

You probably had a wonderful weekend. The proof is this post, being your first of the week.
I will step to your short interview with Rebekah just after this comment.

Meanwhile, I like your point on connecting with mid-level or mini influencers. I think this is a very crucial point you’ve made.

Very small fishes are hardly noticed by the big fishes in the sea. Most starters (Some with poorly setup blogs, very tiny content) often think they can just jump into the camp of the big and get their attention.

One needs to grow gradually by connecting with bloggers and marketers around his reach. As you grow in value, you stand a better chance to be easily noticed.

Thanks for making this week awesome Donna. Now off to the interview I go 😉

      Hi Enstine.

Glad you mentioned the mid-level influencers. These are the people that many are after to either guest post or get to know them.

Mid-level influencers are amazing to know because they have a strong following. From there, two can connect and do a lot of business together.

There are a lot of these fishes in the sea so personally I am using Post Planner as part of my own strategy to connect and it is already doing a wonderful job.

    Hey Donna,

There are many marketers on the internet. The main thing is that people should recognize an influencer in their own niche.

We all do mistakes. While blogging and using the social media to promote the blog, it’s necessary to have a strategy.

The bond of reciprocity with the influencers is always helpful.

    Thanks for sharing with us.

      Hi Ravi,

Indeed, we need to know who those influencers are in our particular niche. When we follow them, comment and spread their articles and blog posts, we need to do that with two things in mind.

      1. Make sure what you are sharing will benefit our own followers.
      2. Honestly be interested in what that influencer is doing.

      Can’t go wrong with that!

Thank you Donna for sharing a step-by-step method on how to reach and develop relationships among influencers. Many people often just reach out or email influencers without building a relationship first. As a result, their emails are gone straight to the trash.

      Hi Grant,

Indeed, there is nothing worse than reaching out without making a relationship with others, especially influencers. You are so correct that the result would be the emails will go straight into the trash.
