How To Write A Roundup Post To Drive Traffic and Build Blog Engagement

How To Write A Roundup Post To Drive Traffic and Build Blog EngagementLearn How To Write A Roundup Post To Drive Traffic and Build Blog Engagement, and then make it happen.

If you’re not quite sure what a roundup post is, or how it can help your blogging business, then this article will be a big help.

I’ve written before about methods for driving free traffic to your blog, and this is one method that ranks near the top.

I’ve also written about how to build engagement on your blog, and again, writing a roundup post is one of the best ways to do it.

So if you want both benefits… traffic plus engagement, consider writing a roundup post.

Special: Start Your Blog In 3 Easy Steps

People have been asking me, “What is Roundup Post?”

So, I came up with two answers.

Here’s the quick answer.

A “Roundup Post” is when you round up or gather a group of people or ideas, typically other bloggers or thought leaders in your niche.

You round them up for the purpose of discussing the topic of your “roundup post.”

Beyond that, though, it gives you an opportunity to showcase, or introducing them to your readers.

Here’s the more difficult (but more instructive) answer.

I did my very first roundup post last week on this blog.

36 Loyal Readers of Donna Merrill Tribe

You can take a peek and it will show you exactly what a roundup post looks like.

Keep in mind, this is a particular type of roundup post, which you’ll read about a bit more down the page.

There are other types.

I’d like you to look at that blog post before you read the rest of this because it will make it all so much more clear.

Hands on.

Real world.

A picture’s worth a thousand words.

Yea, all of that.

Why Should You Do A Roundup Post?

People do Roundup posts for many reasons.

Often they do them to create buzz and recognition for their blog.

They use them as a way to create good will with other bloggers and influencers.

In other words, it gets them noticed, and on the radar of folks they’d like to hang with.

Maybe not their favorite movie star, or anime character…

How To Write A Roundup Post To Drive Traffic and Build Blog Engagement

…but other bloggers anyway.

By far, the most important reason that you wanted to do a roundup post is to drive traffic to your blog.

Not Only Traffic, But New Traffic

When you blog regularly, you typically see the same people over and over again from within your crowd.

But when you do a roundup post, your traffic grows exponentially.

That’s because each person who participates in your roundup post, will share the article with

  • all their readers,
  • people in their social networks,
  • friends,
  • followers, and of course,
  • candle-stick makers (really?).

That means that not only your usual crowd will be reading your roundup post, but you’ll get visitors that you don’t even know.

That’s because their friends will drop by…

and the friends of the friends…

and that grows the amount of traffic to your blog immensely.

Who Should You Include In Your Roundup Post?

I think one of the mistakes bloggers often make when they do their first roundup post, is it they just want to get a whole lot of people involved.

Anybody… everybody.

Or, at least, anyone they think will contribute.

But it’s not just a matter of getting a whole lot of people.

You need to be a bit more strategic in designing your roundup posts.

Roundup Your Crowd

Now a great method is to simply feature your followers.

That’s what I did in my first roundup post.

When you include your followers what you’re trying to do is to get their friends and followers to be introduced to your blog, often for the first time.

But it’s a two way street.

You also want your readers to go check out the blogs you feature because that will increase traffic to their blogs, and make them even more enthusiastic about following you in the future, as well as participate in future joint ventures (like roundup posts) with you.

This will certainly improve the traffic flow to your blog.

Moreover (I love starting sentences with that word, seems so smart of something)… Moreover, it will come with a hearty recommendation from the roundup participants, because they already know, like you and trust you.

They will pay forward (another cool quip) this know-like-trust thingee to their readers and followers.

So not only are you getting new traffic, but you are getting high quality, well targeted, people to your site who have probably never been there before.

Don’t forget, too, that they come on the personal recommendation of one or more of the people who participated in your roundup post.

Special: Start Your Blog In 3 Easy Steps

Roundup Some Experts

Another strategy is to center your roundup blog post around experts on a certain topic, or experts in your niche.

Now, it’s likely that these experts do not know you very well, if at all.

So you won’t have as much of a personal recommendation from them as you will with your own followers.

On the other hand, they will usually have a much larger following, and therefore probably drive even more traffic to your blog than your regular followers.

Including experts can also do a great job of enhancing your personal brand.

Hussain Omar recently did a wonderful expert post that had rave reviews, page one Google ranking, and brought him tons of social shares.

It’s a perfect example of what an expert post should look like…

How To Write A Roundup Post

When people see you rubbing shoulders with experts in your industry or niche, they will tend to think of you as more of an expert.

I guess we could call that “expert by association.”

Oh yea, let’s make a retweet for that one…

Roundup Brand Reps

Another group of people to include in your roundup post would be brand representatives or owners.

Brand participants will be associated with particular products, maybe software or specific systems or tools that people in your niche use.

If you’re a social media blogger, for instance, you might like to include a rep from Hootsuite or Follower Wonk.

Your audience will probably already be familiar with those brands, so it will lend credibility to your own brand.

Brands will offer to have their spokespersons participate in your roundup post because they want to increase the visibility of their brand, just like you would use experts to include to increase the visibility of your own brand within their social networks.

One hand washes the other, right?

Another nice thing about including brand reps is that in a break-away or follow-up blog post, you can do reviews about those brands that you affiliate in order to increase the revenue of your blog.

If you don’t know any brand representatives, it’s not a bad idea to start following their blogs.

Most brands now have blogs on their websites.

Leave some comments, share their blog posts, “friend them” on social sites and basically, just get to know them.

Invite them to tea 🙂

How To Write A Roundup Post To Drive Traffic and Build Blog Engagement

After a while, you can ask them to take part in your roundup post.

By that time, they will know who you are and they’ll be much more likely to get involved.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

What About The Content, Itself?

What should your roundup post be about, or focus on?

There are usually two general choices to make here.

One delivers information.

The other builds relationships, engagement or community.

Information Posts

Roundup posts that include information might look something like this… “48 experts tell you how to get traffic to your blog.”

If people are interested in getting new traffic to their blog, they are looking for information.

That information can be extremely valuable to your readers.

Information is probably the most common type of roundup post because it addresses a major concern.

It often solves a typical problem your readers have, as in the example I just used.

People need more traffic to their blog… that’s a problem for them.

You bring together “48 experts” to inform them of ways to do that.

Your roundup post just became a solution to their problem.

They like that, and will share 🙂

Special: Start Your Blog In 3 Easy Steps

Relationship Posts

Building relationships is also a great way to deliver your roundup post.

The purpose here is to build up an relationship with the people who visit your blog.

What you’re really doing, is building community, and including new people in your growing blog community.

You are also building engagement.

When you use the relationship as the basis for your roundup post, you are going to start connecting on a deeper level with people who have just discovered you for the first time/

Building a relationship with them right off the bat, will greatly enhance your ability to get them on to your email list, get them to join you on Twitter, be your Facebook friend and all that sort of thing.

People always like to feel like they’re part of a community.

Use your roundup post to accomplish that feeling.

Instead of giving your readers information, ask your post contributors to answer engaging questions like “What was your greatest challenge as a newbie blogger?”

This gets your contributors to open a conversation with your readers.

How Long Does It Take To Write A Roundup Post?

Well that depends on how many guests you have, what your topic is, how tight you are with your prospective guests, and how organized you are with your follow-up system.

I don’t mean to tell you that it’s a big hurry to get your roundup post published, but on the other hand don’t get stuck doing what I see so many bloggers do…

They think and over-think the process.

The result is predictable.

The roundup post just never happens.

Once you have your participants lined up, give them a short deadline for responding to your question.

This will motivate them to take fast action.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

Don’t for instance, tell them that you need their answer 3 weeks down the road.

Many of them will forget it and you will have to reconnect with them all over again to remind them that you have a roundup post coming up.

Preferably you will contact them once to ask them to participate, and as soon as they say “yes”… you will give them something like a 24 hour deadline for submission of their answer to your question.

Once you have collected all your responses, just get the blog post written.

Don’t make it perfect.

Again, I’ve seen so many bloggers collect information and then drag their feet on the project because they wanted to make sure it was perfect.

Newsflash… it isn’t going to be perfect.

Moreover (ha)… it doesn’t have to be perfect.

It just has to get done.

In my roundup post, for instance, I didn’t have the proper plugins to help me embed images with text wrap-arounds.

So, I didn’t have a photo to put next to the bloggers I included.

That’s not a good way to proceed.

However, I did proceed because I strongly believe it’s better to get something done then to wait for it to be done perfectly.

Hopefully, the next time I do a roundup post, I’ll have my act together a little more and it’ll look a bit spiffier.

But looking spiffy is not the goal… Publishing your roundup post is.

So, I’d like to ask you 2 questions.

Driving traffic for roundup post is seriously an excellent topic to be exposed. And you have shown the original way to drive traffic and your concept of driving new traffic is a big thing to be mentioned in this article. But creating a roundup post is a major work to followed, but if we do that then it would be a great thing to drive traffic. And from now Im going to create a roundup post on my own, and this surely makes a good relationship between myself and my readers.

    Hey Donna

Indeed a great post about conducting roundups.

I too feel that roundup posts have that much potential which can attract hell a lot of readers and If you have got some roundup answers from some great experts then there are more chances that you will get much more than just readers.

I have seen many roundup posts got so many shares, contextual backlinks and much more through the roundup.

Roundup posts are always successful for creating interest in readers mind just by their title and readers easily get attracted to it.

But all we need to conduct these roundups is just mailing all the experts. I have tried this many times but I hardly got reply from few of them and that’s why I never succeed in any roundup.

Either way, Thanks for covering such a wonderful article. 😀

      Hi Chetan,

Roundups do work well as long as you have some kind of relationship with others. In my previous round up it was a “thank you” to my loyal readers that have been around for years.

If you are creating a blog post about a subject and want to have influencers contribute you must have visited them several times or formed some kind of relationship.

I get asked to do them all the time from people I don’t know, and unfortunately I have to turn them down. I don’t know where I will end up lol.

My best advice to you is to build relationships…visit their blogs….comment and share them on social media. Eventually they will get to know you.

    Hi Donna,

For many months I was asked to contribute to roundups and did so. I worked hard to try to create valuable content for them. The problem was I noticed they were soliciting 50, 100 or more people to contribute.

I did it for a while but the traffic drop-off to my site was significant beyond 10 other contributors. So now, I ask how many are participating and if there are more than 30 I won’t do it out of fairness to us all who are contributing.

Otherwise, it’s a great way to provide value to someone.

I haven’t given much thought to doing it myself at this point, but it may be a great way to get people’s thoughts on how they created their message or where they feel they need improvement for a new campaign?

I just may pursue that in the near future.

Thanks for getting me to think as always!!!

I don’t do round ups much, but was inspired to thank my loyal readers that have been with me for years in my last post.

Sometimes I like to do what I call a mini round up whereby I will review a few tools I myself use to bring to light to others. I do include affiliate and non affiliates but keep it all fair. The good, the bad, the ugly lol.

There are so many ways to do this and yes, I think it would be so much fun to do a round up like you suggested.

Hi Donna. Excellent choice for a blog post topic. I’ve seen a lot of roundup posts on blogs from bloggers who are regular visitors to your site. I have wondered about how useful it is – seemed like “you scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours.” But the way you explained it makes me feel it’s a useful technique that every blogger should be doing.

I fully agree with the bit about getting experts to explain something to your readers, instead of trying to explain it yourself. That’s one type of roundup that I’m happy to do, all the time. Once again, thank you for sharing your thoughts on a topic that is interesting and helpful to me and the rest of your readers.

Round up posts can be something like “You scratch my back, and I’ll scratch yours.” I’ve been in many of them and did respond and shared it on social media platforms. My last one was a simple Thank You to many of my loyal readers that have been with me for years.

Indeed, getting experts to explain a specific topic on a round up post is a nice way of helping others.

    Hello, Donna

Very instructive and interesting. Just tweeted and shared on FB.

I like your quick answer hahaha!

The more difficult method … for an expert blogger like you, this probably wouldn’t take much time! For me, it seems lik a lot of research, time and effort is needed, because you really need to have a tribe in place first, and more importantly, a tribe with the KLT (Know, Like, Trust) characteristics! I reckon that will come with consistency and patience!

Reasons for doing a Roundup Post? I prefer looking at it as a way to create good will with other bloggers and influencers.

Ahaa! Reading further down your post, now I understand how your traffic can grow exponentially with this type of round up post.

I’m honored to be “rubbing shoulders” with experts, right here, on YOUR blog, Donna!

      Hi Susette,

One doesn’t have to be around so long to do a round up post. You don’t necessarily have to know others personally, but do a round up on a specific topic. Then research a few people that are ‘experts” in that area and list them.

Do a little bio and link to them at the end and …viola!

Not sure if this qualifies, but I suppose my version of a roundup post would be those I’ve done where I’ve asked people (followers or peers) to share their insights on a specific topic. I normally do this a couple of times a year. In fact, traditionally I do one in December where I ask a select group of peers to share their most important lesson for the year and how they will take what they’ve learned into the New Year. These posts have always gone over very well and you are so right about how they help to introduce us to new readers. Thanks for the tips and inspiration Donna!

      Hi Darrell,

Some think that doing a round up post means that they need over a hundred people or topics, but in truth it can be as little as 4. I have done a lot of those in the past and it works well.

Good to know you have some ideas rolling in your head from this post.

      Have a great week,

    Hi Donna,

Well as you know, I did create a roundup post earlier this year. It was longggggg too – over 6,000 words.

It was about people who inspired me. I enjoyed putting it together.

I think roundup posts are awesome. It’s just nice when you see people appreciate what you put out there.

I’m sure I’ll do another one again sometime.

Hey Donna, I think I am ready, Going to seriously think about what I would like to ask other owners of blogs in my niche. Also thinking that I could cover three areas and ask five bloggers from each topic. The topics would be connected to addiction recovery. Thanks you have my wheels turning lol

    Hi Donna,

I have not yet done around the post but it is something I’ve been wanting to do.

I have some ideas and perhaps in the coming months I will actually put them to use.

Not going to lie, it does seem like a lot of work but I do think it’s a great way to engage and give back to other bloggers.

    Hi Donna,

Super explanation and you did a fine job with your round up! As as aside, I share my round up posts with:

    – Candlestick makers
    – small woodland creatures
    – any sentient being within 40 miles of my current location

    😉 😉 Upper-case LOL.

I’ve done a handful of round ups over the years. Tagging and or emailing round up participants is a biggie as they can spread the word this way and going forward with what you got – like, how you didn’t sweat the plug in thingee – is the easiest way to gain traction with the post.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Hey Donna,

I have noticed that people are doing many roundups and it’s pretty good. It helps the bloggers to get more exposure to their blog.

All the experts will share that post and a new audience will come to the blog. It’s like using others influence for your blog.

Though it takes a few days to build a roundup because people don’t reply on the same day.

Thanks for making it up for everyone.
    Have a great day.

I used to do roundup posts a lot when I started blogging but they were often because of memes and not the type I’d do these days.

I’ve been in a few round up posts recently and feel that I need to reciprocate, as thanks to those who included me (that includes you too).

I’m just trying to come up a good topic that fits in with the type of thing I write about:-) This post is of great help. Thanks, Donna.

    Hey Donna,

I never tried roundup posts, may be because my sites are not from that niche but roundup does gives a genuine boost, if there are 30 people in your roundup then you can easily expect to get 30 shares from those people and some quality links too.

Next time I would love to hear something from you which applies to other niche websites perfectly 😉

    Cheers

      Hi Karan,

There are so many different ways to do roundups.

If you want to put one together for a niche site, you simply find the leaders, top voices in that niche and contact them. Ask them to answer one question that your target audience would be really interested in hearing about. Then post those answers in your guest article.

It’s really a simple idea. The work is in knowing who the influencers are in your niche, making the contacts with them, keeping them focused on delivering, and then designing an interesting looking article.

Finally, do the content marketing, the promotion and the follow-up with reader comments.

That’s how to do a great expert roundup in any niche at all.

      Give it a try 🙂

Though I never plan of making a round up post but I must confess, you really hit the nail at the head.

      Hi Helyz,

I’m glad to give you the idea, or maybe the push, to include a roundup post on your blog.

Some people have told me they don’t have strong enough connections to build a roundup post, but that doesn’t matter.

You can just find people active in your niche, or expert in it, introduce yourself and ask if they’d be willing to answer a question for your readers. The best type of question is something your readers would find valuable, like “how do you come up with good blog post ideas”… any blogger would find that valuable.

Good luck, I’d love to see you do this 🙂

    Hey Donna,

Doing a round up post makes a world of difference when it comes to generating more traffic. And it’s free to do.

My major roundup post took me about a month to do. I wrote to as many people I could, gave then a deadline, and I ended up with little over 30 people to participate.

Once I published it, I got over 300 shares within a few days which was phenomenal for me.

So you definitely won’t go wrong with doing them. I highly recommend it. I really like the way you broke down the different type of round up posts. I haven’t realize how many different ones there are.

Thanks for sharing Donna! Have a good one!

    Hey Donna,

I haven’t really considered writing a roundup post because I didn’t know how it would really fit for my niche (without overwhelming people). But after reading your post some ideas are flowing to me. The most common roundups I’ve seen are the informational and expert ones but you’ve opened my eyes to other possibilities.

    Thanks for the insight 🙂
