What Bloggers Can Do To Stand Out In A Crowd

This post was most recently updated on July 18th, 2017

What Bloggers Can DoTo Stand Out In A CrowdBloggers can stand out in a crowd by doing things just a bit differently than everyone else.

Just a bit.

It’s amazing how much you can improve your results by tweaking just a few little things.

Look at some of the top bloggers in your niche and notice what they’re doing to be different and unique.

You could try some of those things.

But, even more, you could take things a step further and come up with your own ideas to stand out in a crowd.

Once you’ve determined the top sources of traffic for your blog traffic, you have to learn how to tap into them.

That’s how you to get noticed by your ideal prospects, which I like to call “your crowd.”

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

SEO Is Not The Only Way To Make Your Blog Popular

Well, what I’m suggesting here is kind of like SEO.

There are both “on page” and “off page” SEO tactics you can use to make your site more attractive to the search engines.

Same thing here.

Only I’m taking this a step beyond SEO.

You see, there are many things you can do on your blog (what we call “on-page”) that will help make your blog stand out from the rest.

But there are also things you need to do off your blog (what we call “off-page”) to distinguish yourself.

Use a combination of these tactics to build your unique brand.

This can make you just a bit different than all the other bloggers in your niche.

And, of course, these are the same things that will make your blog popular.

This can result in vastly improving the results you get from your blogging business.

Who Is In “Your Crowd?”

The first thing you need to discover is just who your crowd is.

This depends, of course, on what your niche is.

But even more, it reflects just who your target audience is within that niche.

Let’s say my blog is in the “wellness” niche.

Well, my audience could be in one of many sub-niches or micro-niches.

Notice, for instance, from this “Women’s Marketing” data, how many directions I could take my blog into within this very strong niche…

Bloggers Stand Out In A Crowd

Read more at Women’s Marketing… Health & Wellness Is The Next Trillion Dollar Industry

You can see from the data that “beauty and anti-aging” is the strongest micro-niche.

That is followed by “fitness and exercise” and then “nutrition and weight loss.”

So, if I decide to focus my blog on “health drinks,” I’d be looking to connect with a target audience consisting of people interested in “nutrition and weight loss” or even just “nutrition.”

My crowd, then, would be the people interested primarily in nutrition.

But secondarily, they’d be interested in my special interest: health drinks.

This is the sort of process I might go through to determine who, exactly, comprises my target audience… who is in my crowd.

How To Get Your Blog Noticed

Now that you have defined your niche or, better yet, your micro-niche… it’s time to get to know your target audience.

That means, you’ll need to find out where they hang out.

Then get out of the comfort zone of your own blog, and start hanging out with them.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

That’s how they’ll find who you are and what you do.

And also, that’s how you’ll get your blog noticed by exactly the people you want to notice it.

3 Things That Will Make Your Blog Unique

Now, any time you are connecting with your target audience, you need to keep three things in mind.

  1. What is their biggest problem or challenge
  2. Then, what is their 2nd biggest problem
  3. Finally, what is their 3rd biggest problem

These are the things that you need to keep talking about in your conversations with your audience.

Let them know they can find solutions to these problems on your blog.

It is what will make your blog popular and get it noticed.

And beyond that, keep in mind that, really, very few bloggers ever deliver on their promise to deliver the solutions their readers are looking for.

At least, very few ever do it well.

So, you be the one who does.

Know what the big problems are for the majority of people in your crowd.

Then promise them solutions to those problems.

And here comes the biggest part of this…

Fulfilling your promise to deliver these solutions is what will make your blog unique.

It’s also what will make you different than all the other bloggers.

Help Solve Problems

Your biggest challenge as a blogger is finding innovative and unique ways to solve the problems your readers have.

I mean, that’s what you’re promising.

Time to deliver on that promise.

How will you do that?

You might

  • write amazing blog posts,
  • curate great content
  • use compelling images
  • have a flair with video

Whatever you do is fine, as long as it is actually helping the folks in your crowd (your target audience) to solve their biggest problems.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

That is the best of what you can do to really stand out in a crowd.

Building Trust

Finally, everything you say and do should make your readers trust you as an authority.

They must get the sense that you are well qualified to solve their problems and improve their lives in the process.

And they’ll get that sense when you give them reason to trust and believe in you.

Most of all, they’ll get the sense that you really care about them.

If people feel like you really and truly are dedicated to helping them, you will stand out in a crowd.

Now, as I said earlier, you can do this both “on-page” and “off-page” tactics.

So let’s take a quick look at that.

What Bloggers Can Do To Stand Out In A Crowd

On-Page Tactics

There are some very simple things you can do to make your blog unique.

Zac Johnson talks about using custom themes and blog designing to make your blog stand out.

Certainly, you can give your blog an edge by making it look really appealing to your crowd.

If people visit you blog and immediately like the look and feel of it, they are probably going to think of you as a credible authority in your niche.

Sathish Arumugam suggests some important steps to take in an article he contributed to BeAMoneyBlogger.

These include…

  1. Using Infographics
  2. Adding an FAQ section or page
  3. Embedding “memes” (cleverly captured images) – you can learn more about memes from this Lifewire article: “What Is A ‘Meme’?
  4. Speeding up your blog site
  5. Using a user-friendly comment system, especially one that ties into a social media network.

Off-Page Tactics

Now, you have your blog set up to showcase yourself as a professional and reliable authority.

Next, you need to make sure your blog is getting noticed by your target audience.

You need to get the word out on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Look to get involved in conversations with people in social media groups.

That’s your primary goal.

Facebook and LinkedIn groups, for instance, are excellent places to find your crowd.

Reddit is another great place for group interaction, via their “sub-reddits.”

Twitter chats and Forums are yet other places to interact with your audience.

I don’t know your niche, so hey, you’ve got to do some of this research to find out where your particular crowd is hanging out.

The point I’m trying to make is that once you find them, then you’ve got to stick with them so they see you.

This is how to make your blog stand out from the rest.

This is how to get your blog noticed by Google because they see you’ve got a popular blog that is getting the attention of your unique crowd.

Oh yea, one more thing (just an aside, here)…

Don’t forget to put a link to your blog in your “signatures” on forums and in your emails.

Heidi Cohen outlines 31 Ways To Make Your Blog Stand Out.

These include some excellent off-page tactics like…

  1. Add your blog’s URL to your social media profiles
  2. Include links to your posts when you email your newsletter subscribers
  3. Share links to your posts on social media sites each time you publish
  4. Comment on other leading blogs in your niche
  5. Answer questions on Q&A sites like Quora

What Do You Do To Stand Out In A Crowd?

In the information age we are in, it is imperative that you make your blog unique and distinctive.

That’s how to become a recognized authority within your specific niche.

And it almost goes without saying… it’s one of the best things you can do to stand out in a crowd.

Now, let’s face it.

The name of the game is to get more traffic that will eventually convert into more subscribers, customers and clients.

This is what blogging is all about.

So I hope you’re spending a good portion of your effort on this.

This might be a good time for you to stop everything you’re doing and take an hour… just an hour… to write down exactly what you do every day to get seen and heard in your niche.

If you’re doing everything you can, then keep at it.

If not, then map out a new plan for yourself and start implementing it today.

Very excellent advice (as per) usual Donna!

And you’ve definitely made the case, about
discovering who our crowd (tribe) is, and learning
all we can, in terms of how to best serve them.

And BTW, I really loved your video and the points you
covered in the very beginning, about
just ‘how’ deep things have gotten.

And you are so right. Often times now, I find myself
suggesting, people in a conversation ask their friend, if they
    doubt what they’re hearing.

And of course, the friend I’m referring to is Google!LOL!

Just as you pointed out. We are most definitely in the
information age, in more ways than one!

Great points and these are some awesome
    resources you’ve shared Coach! Thanks!

    Hey Donna,

This is a million dollar post which covers one of the main topics everyone should be reading.

Millions of bloggers are trying to stand out in the crowd but only a few of them come to know the real way.

Providing the content worth reading, the user-friendly atmosphere is always required.

Knowing about the crowd around you depending on the niche you write about can help you a lot.

User satisfaction is always what you should consider at its best.

    Thanks for sharing with us.

To be a unique Blogger you have to work on having unique strategies which convert for you. You already discussed most part and things needed to be a successful blogger. Some want to give up or call it quits and they might even be wondering why they started a blog because they are unable to get a unique strategy that works for them. But they forgot to make more researches, following top bloggers and been hard work can help them out of this.

    Thanks for the piece.

    Hey Donna,
Awesome post, you just outlined the ingredient of successful blogging here!

Yes, the internet is full of blogs, in all niches, and the one that will be started should be super unique to reach its goals, otherwise the efforts will be wasted.
I love your approach. Inbound marketing is really important, to have the engagement you want, which will really pay off. And not to wait for search engines, and to go and mingle with the other crowds to drag their attentions and prove that you deserve to be followed.

    Thanks for sharing, Donna!

    Nice weekend ahead!

    Donna,
What a valuable post. So much good information and important suggestions.
As Lesly Federici has said, the major way to stand out is to be yourself, speak in your own voice and style, and she didn’t mention how important it is for you to get across to people that you care about them.

You, Donna, have certainly mastered that last one. You always show caring. You always reply to comments, share people’s work and offer your help when needed.

    Warmly,

    Hi Donna,

This is interesting. Not many bloggers know how to stand out from the crowd even though they need it so well.

For me, what I normally do is to replicate what’s working for industry gurus in my blog and see how it scales through. If it does, I will maintain it and if it doesn’t, I will honestly make research to find out why. Next is to see what bloggers in my niche are not doing very well and correct that on mine so that I can have some unique selling proposition with which I can market my blog and product.

I strongly believe if all bloggers can get to read half of what you wrote down here, their struggles in trying to stand out will be half-solved.

    Thanks for sharing.

WONDERFUL, wonderful, wonderful guidelines. Let your mind be a sponge and soak ALL this information in. There are so many ways to stand out. You don’t have to have the best looking blog, best design, but remember always – what also helps to stand out is simply being you because there’s no one else like you 🙂

    Hey Donna!

What a fabulous post! We all what to stand out in a crowd AND in the bloggy-verse, right? Who doesn’t? If you’re blogging, you can’t decide to stay hidden. So how do you stand out? Your tips are spot on, as always. That’s why you totally rock! I say this from experience, being yourself and not being an imposter can and will make you stand out. Whether it’s your professional appearance, your site aesthetics, the tone you write in, or how you engage others can all make you unique enough to stand out.

Of course, we all know Ryan B and Sam H absolutely stand out in a crowd, like many others, including yourself. We may not think we can be ourselves because of rejection but in actuality, being ourselves, our natural selves, can attract people to you. It took me a few years to realize this and thankfully, I finally got it. There is a crowd for everyone. Find the one you want to be part of, naturally, and stand out.

Thanks for this post, Donna. It reminded me that even though some of us have businesses, trying to be someone we aren’t will definitely be a turnout and reflect in our business.

Hope you and David are having a great weekend!

    Hello Donna,

    Something to re-consider here.
Yeah the blogoshpere is over crowed place and every one wants to stand out in the crowd and make their own stand.Talking is easy and making the stand is very difficult. Indeed branding out ourselves is very necessary, so that it makes us look different from the others. We need to choose the right niche, while targeting our audiences that what they want from us.

In this era every one is going online, whether they have small or large business they want it to make it global and promote themselves on bigger platforms. I always eager to do off-page tactics but never tried those. Surely gonna hitting it in sometime. I have read along through many post, that how off-page tactics can be used for making our business and sites go for a long run.

Seo no doubt is the lead factor to rank our sites and blogs well, but apart form that we need to be created and come with some good niche which get attracting our customers again and again.

    Loved your video 🙂

    Thanks for the share.

I totally agree with all the tips you’ve shared here. Taking Part on social media helps you fish out those who would be needing what you have to share. That way you tend to build traffic and as well followers.

Overall, being unique still Is one of the most important in this tips.

Anyways yes, it’s about having a presence so you can be found and checked. Testimonials are really key today! I just did a post on social proof and that helps to people one’s authority from what others say about them.

I do buy from folks I trust and that doesn’t happen immediately. I like to get them know them first and then I try out a few of their products before going ALL IN.

I think we have to get over the fear of being ourselves with our blogs and writings. We can’t pretend we are someone else though at times I’d like too 🙂

    Very nice piece of content!

To stand out of the crowd we need to invent some ideas that may help us to get noticed. There is no rules for this because if you keep following others then that will be repetative and there won’t be anything new that may stand you out in the crowd.

But, still as you said that see what others are doing, and try to better that thing when you do it to get noticed.

Controversy will always make you stand out, although some people will be opposed to you of course… that’s what controversy is 🙂

I think it’s good to be controversial if you really believe in your position, not just for the sake of being controversial to get attention.

Good luck with setting up your Youtube channel… a great way to get noticed as long as (like anything else) you’re contributing great content consistently in the form of fresh new vids all the time.

Wonderful timing with this topic Donna. I’m working on some branding tweaks behind the scenes to coincide with an upcoming event and in the process creating a new subscriber “gift” that is quite a bit different from anything I’ve done in the past a-n-d participating in my first JV event so stretching my little brain in many new directions which I just love. Thanks for the tips and inspiration!

    Hi Donna,

I love this post. I need to more off-page tactics. I signed up for Reddit to post my content but it looks so busy that I couldn’t figure out how to get my profile together.

I am on several Facebook groups and I also started posting content in Viral Content Buzz. I did start using StumbleUpon but that’s hurting my bounce rate.

I need to go a Facebook live post – I see a lot of bloggers are doing it and well, you know me and video. One day I’ll shock everyone and just do it. 🙂

Thanks for tips Donna – they’re always so very helpful. 🙂

Hope you’re having a great day!

      Hi Cori,

I look forward to that day that you surprise me with a video.

Facebook groups are great as long as everyone is reciprocating. I’m down to only one group these days.

I do believe you sure do stand out of the crowd because of all you do for others. Take those work at home job postings you do…how many people do that? Your niche is amazing.

    Hi Donna,

Loved your video. I like how you note to do something that resonates with you. Like….I love Facebook Live videos, and allow my personality out through that medium. I suggest all bloggers do at least 1 to dive into their fears but if it genuinely is not for them, find another way to let YOU out. Maybe Infographics are a better tool for self-expression. Or just writing long form blog posts.

At any rate, honor your intuition to see what feels right and clear for you, to be yourself and to make the biggest impact as you enjoy the ride.

    Thanks for sharing 🙂

      Hi Ryan,

As a huge fan of intuition, I know that once you follow it, the journey will be great. Indeed, we all need to do videos or Facebook Live, or any way we can reach others and show them who we really are. People love that!

I always enjoy your Facebook Live re-runs. I never made it on time, but maybe one day I will.

Yep, we need to be a little bit different to get ourselves noticed. I have spent some years getting my name out in the blogging world. It has worked magnificently! I have been very active on social media, it has really come into its own in the last few years. I have also blog hopped A LOT! Not only in my niche but in niches that have influencers in them. Some big name bloggers know my name! That is something!

    Enjoy the journey!

      Hi Mandy.

I love it that some big name bloggers know your name! That is one thing every blogger needs to do is to get in touch with those expert bloggers and learn from them, leave a great comment and share. I find that some people are intimidated to do so. When it comes down to it all, we are all human. We put our pants on one leg at a time.

Social media plays such an important role if one wants to get themselves noticed.

      Thanks so much,

    Hi Donna,

Great post and I loved your video. You’re definitely correct, everyone does need to be online, it really doesn’t matter what services or products you offer.

It took me a while to start getting off my own blog. It’s easy to get into that comfort zone and just stay on our blog. I’ve been commenting for about 2 months now and it has definitely helped me start building relationships.

I’ve also been guest posting and am learning how to use my Facebook page better. Right now Facebook is my biggest traffic referrer, so I am trying to learn how to use it more effectively.

I was focused on trying to get Pinterest to work for me, because I had heard so many other bloggers having huge success with it. However, you’re right, you have to find what works for your blog and then do more of that.

While I still use Pinterest, I am NOT putting a ton of emphasis on it. I would rather learn how to use Facebook more effectively, since that is what’s working for my blog.

Thanks for sharing these tips with us, I know it’s going to help so many of us bloggers stand out in a crowded field. I’m going to check out some of those articles you mention to see what other nuggets I can pick up.

    Have a great day 🙂

    Susan

    Donna,
Oh boy this is so good! Great advice! From your video -We Google a person online to find information. You need to have an online presence to stand out in the crowd these days.
Business today requires interaction Information on a blog, webinar, social media etc. Depending on what you want to accomplish.
Find out in your niche the people you want to be associated with. Sub-niches, micro-niches.
I loved the 3 challenges that your crowd faces. You have their solutions on your blog.
Know like and trust gives you the sense that you really care about them and their problems.
I liked the 5 points from Sathish. Very good. Getting noticed on Facebook, LinkedIn groups
and Reddit – sub-reddits as well as Twitter chats and forums are great tips.
Heidi’s 5 points for off page tactics were great. Neil’s info on Quora excellent.
I do take the time to write down exactly what I do every day to be seen and heard in my niche in my daily report. I find that helps a lot. Fabulous article! Sharing it.

Those 5 points from Sathish are amazing. And Heidi’s advice for off page tactics were also well done. Of course Neil ‘s information on Quora is helpful.

    Hi, Donna!

Great post. You’re right. It could be our brand that would differentiate us from others. If someone is in the same niche as their friend, the chances are, they end up creating a similar content. However, if each one of them would try to infuse the personality and persona into the content strategy, things would start to differentiate.

Some of my friends have similar blogs, so I navigated through and came up with an idea of changing up the content strategy. It did work well for me.

Thanks, Donna, for this useful blog post.

      Hi Hassaan,

With so many people pouring online, we are bound to have many in the same niche as ourselves. And that is OK….we are not running competition with them. We only want to stand out from that specific crowd and be the go-to person.

It is good to know that you have come up with an idea and it worked for you.

    Hi Donna,

Great advice as usual. Besides deciding on what you should be doing
and figuring out a way to do it, is just plain as the nose on your face that it all
    hangs on one nail.
It is called: Just Do It!
So many people read about things, file them away in their mind and then
wonder why nothing happens with their traffic or site.

Problem is, they learned, but didn’t do!

      Hi Cararta,

It is so true that there are many people out there that read about things and don’t take action on what they have learned to do.

Indeed “Just do it” is one of my mantras!

If one wants to get traffic to their site they have to apply what they have learned. Be consistent about it and give it time.

    Hi Donna,

Hmmm, some things to think about here.

Who is my crowd. Well, I hadn’t really thought about it, but now that I am, I’d say my crowd would be mostly newbie bloggers who are where I was as a blogger. I’ve decided to focus on blogging and have stepped back from the affiliate marketing niche. Sure, I can still promote products as an affiliate, as long as they are related to blogging.

I haven’t really narrowed it down to which part of blogging I want to focus on, i.e., traffic generation, writing posts, plugins, etc., but I think all that can be covered considering all bloggers, newbies and veterans, would benefit from info in all those areas.

Getting my blog noticed, I usually share my posts to Facebook, Twitter, and G+ as far as social media sites go. Of course, there’s the king of them all, blog commenting, which I have been getting back into, especially on Ryan Biddulph’s Blogging From Paradise blog. I admit, I haven’t done enough on other sites, but I’m getting back into the swing, now that I’m down in North Carolina.

I do need to check out the different social groups I’ve joined and get more involved with the members and, who knows, solve a problem or two. Lol. Start asking what people are having problems with and then write a post, or even an ebook, to provide solutions to the problems.

Speaking of which, I started writing my first ebook to help people get up and running with their own blogs. Did over 900 words today. Yay, me.

I do plan on doing live FB broadcasts in the near future. If done right, I can get blog posts, short videos for Twitter, nuggets for my Facebook Fan Page, etc. to cover a month.

i’ll be adding more infographics, hopefully, moving forward, if they fit in with the topic. Of course, throw in a little video now and then. May a little song and dance. Lol, just kidding.

Like you say, anything to make me stand out from the crown is a good thing. I changed the look of my blog recently to try and get away from the usual colors you see on other blogs. Who knows, could work.

I’ll be sure to check out the articles you referenced here.

Thanks for this excellent post. I wouldn’t expect anything less.

    Have a good one……..Chris

      Hi Chris,

Reading through your reply I can see that you already know who your crowd is. Newbie bloggers and that my friend is a good choice because there are so many and more piling in every day.

I would say all that you want to write about encompasses information for the new blogger, from SEO to writing style, and so much more…

As long as you write your blog posts consistently and get around to comment (as your last blog was written so well about this) you will do great!

Yay for you writing your ebook! Keep on going.
