Side Hustles For Bloggers To Make Extra Money

Side Hustles For Bloggers To Make Extra MoneyThis is going to be fun.

A lot of the bloggers I connect with complain that they don’t know how to make money blogging.

Well, I did write an article called Why Does My Blog Fail To Grow And Make Money?

I go through many of the things people are doing wrong, that keep their blogs from delivering results.

Also, I go through the right way to do things.

But it’s not magic sauce 🙂

It’s a way forward in building your business.

But in the meanwhile…

you just may need to be struggling to make ends meet.

Anyone on that path?

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

So, if you just need to start putting some extra money in your pocket, Cori Ramos is going to help you in this article.

You know, you might need cash to put into your business.

Cash you don’t have.

But you don’t want to, or are not able to work outside the home.

So, yeah, there’s a way forward.

But again, Cori is the expert here, and my special guest author.

So I’m going to let here take over at this point.

Side Hustles For Bloggers To Make Extra Money

by Cori Ramos

My first year of blogging was a total disaster.

I had no clue what I was doing.

And I didn’t know what WordPress was (true story) and I sure as heck didn’t know how to write a blog post.

You should read my first blog posts!

But to top it all off, I made the worst blogging mistake you can make.

I started things backwards.

By that I mean I went after the money first before taking the time to grow my blog and build a community.

I don’t have to tell you the money wasn’t rolling in.

In fact, I made a whole $25 my first year of blogging.

Big whoop, right?

Now I won’t lie…

I did the happy dance.

But I knew I had messed up big time.

So I spent the following year doing what I should have done in my first year.

I learned

  • how to put quality content together,
  • then, how to build an engaging community,
  • and, how to connect with other bloggers.

It’s like I started all over again.

But while I was doing that there wasn’t any money coming in.

I needed to do something to make extra cash to help me pay for my blogging expenses.

So I did side hustle gigs like data entry, doing online surveys and completing tasks for extra money.

Donna and I had a chat about it during an interview we did about using our blogging skills to make money online.

Side Hustles For Bloggers To Make Extra Money

I know how it is to want to, no – need to make extra money.

The money may not be coming in but the bills still are, right?

Lots of bloggers give up before making their one year “blogiversary.”

Guess what the most common reason is?

Because they’re not making the money they had expected.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

So what do you do when there isn’t much money coming in?

Before you press the panic button or throw in the towel, I’m here to help.

Here is a list of side hustles that I did to make extra money along with some resources to get you started.

The great thing about these side hustle gigs is that most of these can be done from home.

So you can do them when it’s most convenient for you.

This gives you time to work on your blog.

Let’s get started…

Complete Tasks For Cash

If you only a limited amount of time to work, then you might try completing tasks, or micro jobs as they’re also called.

This is a great way for you to make extra money and still have time for blogging.

Typical gigs include things like…

  • editing content,
  • locating contact information on a website,
  • transcription, and
  • answering questions.

But you need to know that these kinds of gigs don’t pay much.

Some gigs pay $.02 cents, $.25 cents and others might pay more, depending on the project.

Of course, the more you do the more you earn.

Here is a list of sites that offer you pay to complete tasks for cash.

Some of these sites also offer offline tasks like landscaping, home repairs and running errands.

Website Testing

This is actually a pretty cool side hustle if you like browsing on websites.

A web tester does a run through of a website before it goes live.

You’ll check pages, links, load time and report any issues to the website owner.

I was a website tester for “jet dot com.”

My job was to type in the keywords of different products in different categories in the search bar.

I had to make sure the right products were coming up.

Then I’d have to make sure the product had the right description, an image and price.

I’d also check the filters to make sure it worked properly.

For $18 an hour, that was not a bad gig at all!

Here is a list of places that hire website testers.

Internet Researcher

Another great way to make extra money is doing internet research.

And because of the convenience of working from home and scheduling their own hours, some folks go on to become successful freelance internet researchers.

If you surf the web to find information and resources for your blog posts, then you already have experience as an internet researcher.

But you need more skills than that.

You have to be analytical and have the ability to pay attention to detail.

An internet researcher does a variety of searches on different search engines using online resources.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

For instance, a researcher may pull certain information about a company from their website or other online resource.

It could be anything like their earning stats, how many employees they have, the names of CEOs… anything.

There are some research tools you’ll need to make your job easier.

For example, if you use Firefox, you can use Zotero and Wired-Marker add-ons.

Safari users can use the Concierge plugin.

Mac OS X users can use either the EagleFiler or Selenium add-ons.

And there are also these tools:

  • iCyte
  • Similar Web
  • SpringNote
  • Google Notebook

If this type of work sounds interesting to you, check out these places to find internet research gigs:

Thinking Outside of the Box to Make Extra Money

If you really sit down to think about it, there are a lot of ways – and I do mean a lot of ways… that you can make extra money on the side.

Thanks to technology, most of them can be done from the comfort of your own home.

In fact, they can be done anywhere you are, just as long as you have a strong internet connection.

Forget about online surveys, selling your photos or doing transcription.

They are all great ways to make extra money, but that’s the norm.

When I say think outside of the box, I’m talking about this…

making extra money doing things that probably would never dawn on you if you had to come up with ideas right off the top of your head.

You know, the ones that give you that “oh yeah, I forgot about that” moment.

Here are some other ways you can make extra money:

  • photography
  • teach a second language
  • teach a yoga or exercise class
  • voice coach
  • proofread and editing essays for college students
  • provide technical support
  • indoor home painter
  • rent your car

And I’ve barely scratched the surface here.

You can also join a focus group to participate in research studies on things like technology, food, and entertainment.

As a panelist you get to participate in a discussion about a particular product or service.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

The details of the discussion are then shared with the makers of those products or services in an effort to make improvements.

Focus Pointe Global pays between $45 and $250 per study.

Most studies take two hours or less to complete.

That leaves plenty of time for you to manage your blog.

Selling Items You No Longer Use or Need

If you’re like me, you probably have some stuff around the house you no longer need or use.

Don’t waste time putting a yard sale together.

Consider other ways you can make extra money selling those clothes, books, CD’s and DVDs you are no longer using.

Sell your clothes at your local consignment shops.

You can go to the website resaleshopping.com to find a consignment shop in your area.

For selling books, CDs, DVDs, games, even old smartphones and other devices you’re not longer using, check out Decluttr.

Ladies, if you have handbags you wouldn’t mind parting with, check out some of the sites listed below to sell them for extra cash.

The handbags have to be in good condition.

Also, some sites only accept certain designers.

So make sure to read their guidelines before submitting your handbag.

And get this – you can also sell your hair!

There is a website called HairSellOn.

All you have to do is register for a free account, post an ad for your hair and wait for an offer.

There is even a hair price calculator that gives you an estimate for your hair.

Paid Blogging Gigs

Maybe none of these side hustles sound appealing to you because you’re only interested in blogging gigs.

Here is a list of websites that offer paid blogging gigs and other freelance projects.

And There You Have It

These are some of the ways you can make extra money while you work toward making a full time income from blogging.

So let’s chat.

If your blog isn’t bringing in much revenue, what are some of the ways you make extra money?

Have you tried any of the suggestions in this post?

Tell us about your own side hustle gigs in the comments section below.

If you know anyone who could use a little extra money, please share this post with them.

Hi Cori and Donna, Love the tips here Cori. I didn’t realize they were so many ways one could make money online but it doesn’t surprise me either. You have been writing about many of them for a while now 🙂
I love the idea of testing websites and doing research. They sound like fun. I understand Andrew’s point about being unable to cash out on some, I’ve had to wait for $50 and $100 at various ones before. I think it’s best if they can pay you on the spot as so many are doing today.
My advice is for others not to give up, keep on blogging and get out there and network. The money will then slowly follow and build up 🙂
Thanks for all the suggestions here Cori. I hope you and Donna have a great 4tth of July!

      Thanks Lisa!

I think you would like website testing and research. When I did the website testing project for jet.com it was the easiest gig I had done. And since I’m into research, it made it that much more fun for me. Too bad it was only a three month project but I would love to do another. 🙂

I agree about the payout thing – heck there are still some sites I have a pending balance but I haven’t had time to get to them to hit the payout threshold so it’s just sitting there.

You give great advice Lisa! We have to put in the work before we see the fruits of our labor. 🙂

Thanks for coming by to check out my post and for leaving a comment! Have a great week. 🙂

    Hey Cori,

Those completing tasks for cash were tough. I had the hardest time making money from those. Also my biggest issue with that was that you couldn’t withdraw money unless the balance was $5 or $10. And with gigs paying $0.02, that would take an eternity for me. But I do like you idea about testing websites. That seems pretty decent. I think that all bloggers should have a side hustle and you shared some pretty good ideas here.

      Hi Andrew,

Yeah finding short tasks for more money but they’re there…on Amazon Turk, I would filter the jobs to put the higher paying gigs on the top. 🙂

Testing websites is an easy gig – I would do it again if I had the chance. 🙂

I agreet with you – all bloggers should have at least one side hustle to bring in some extra revenue.

    Hi Donna and Cori,
Wonderful post on side hustles. So many listed, I never even heard of some of them. What interested me was the ones about doing research as I do a lot of that for my articles. Also will look into the paid blogging gigs.

I have my own side hustle, a business offline that is part-time now after being full time for 10 years.Lots of time for blogging.

And as Ash mentioned I too have an appeal for the value of a course and I am working on producing my first course. Will share this great research to help other bloggers.

Making money in the starting days isn’t so easy as people think. I didn’t make even a single penny in my starting 7 months which was heartbreaking.

    Hi Cori and Donna,

What a fabulous post! All those brilliant ideas to make extra money while your blog takes off. (Like some other readers, I’d also have been pleased with the $25 in year one.)

I’ve made a few sales on eBay – in fact I even sold one or two things for more than I paid for them. You’ve reminded me I have a few bits waiting to list still. I’ve been waiting for a special reduction on listing fees – and it’s on this weekend.

The pressure isn’t as acute for me, as a part-time blogger, because I have income from my offline businesses – but of course having to put those ahead of my blog does slow down progress.

However, there were some tasks that really piqued my interest so I’ll be having a try.

One time when I was short of cash I did Mystery Shopping, which involved going into shops to make trial purchases and reporting on the service. It got a bit tedious with all the travel, so instead I wrote an ebook about it, sold that, and made more money from the ebook than from the visits 🙂

Thanks again for a really valuable article.

      Hi Joy,

First, let me say – you rock! To be able to take your experience in Mystery Shopping and turning it into a successful eBook is awesome! I tried a couple Mystery Shops myself. I wasn’t crazy about the travel either because some of the restaurants were more than 10 miles away. But it was a fun experience for sure. 🙂

I’m glad some of these ideas piqued your interest and it’s good to hear you have more than one way to bring in some revenue. I agree, trying to balance it all can be a little overwhelming at times…but that’s perseverance for you because I can tell you are doing your thing ma’am! 🙂

Thanks for coming by to read my post and for your awesome comment. I’m sorry I replied so late. It’s been quite hectic on my side. 🙂

    Hey Donna! Hey Cori!

    Fabulous tips as always.

The idea of selling one’s hair makes me feel a bit sad because you could donate your hair to Locks of Love. Locks of Love creates wigs for cancer patients out of the donated hair. But I guess, given a desperate situation, you could sell just about anything to get a little bit of cash, right?

Both of you must know that I love to help others, thus the services I offer that are budget-minded. I’m sure if I didn’t already have one income coming in that my prices may not be quite so budget. But even making money online is tough these days. There is always someone out there that is willing to do it for peanuts rather than get a reputable, quality person to perform your tasks.

Cori, you always have the hottest links for job hunting and you know, I use them. I’m sure many others love getting your newsletter with the hot links too!

Great to see Cori here, Donna! Great tips! Take care, ladies!

      Hey B!

You have a point about the hair – I would donate mine too. It’s down to my waist now so if I decide to cut it, that’s where it’s going. 🙂 But sometimes people need to get cash any way they can, it’s tough like that nowadays.

I’m with you on the marketing budget friendly services. I’m with you there. Some mistaken that for so-so services which couldn’t be further from the truth. I believe every one deserves the best out there and not have to pay and arm and leg for it. Especially when there is no money coming in.

You’re right about that – it is hard to make money online and that’s why it’s good that there are side hustle like these – so everyone has a chance to get a piece of the pie! 🙂

Thanks gf! I appreciate your kind words. 🙂

    Hey Cori,

Who says you should only focus on your blog to make money?

I can tell you that these are some great options to take on while you’re growing your blog. I even taught salsa lessons on the side although I really didn’t need to, but it was an experience and I earned some cash for it.

The one hustle you mentioned that’s unbelievable is that women can sell their hair! I heard about this last year on a youtube video I was watching. I’m not mad at those who was making money from it lol

In a capitalistic system, the invention of the internet has a lot of benefits to it and you have listed some great opportunities!

    Hey Cori,

How are you doing? Oh, boy ! All these ways of making money 🙂

You made $25 in your first year of blogging? Let me see. I first spent $30 (sent by check all the way from India to the US) to some survey company so that I could make money doing surveys. #EpicFail.

I then tried reading emails and ads online to make exactly $0.01 cents per email/ad. I managed to make $1 #Epicfail

I gave up. Life came in between. Started working at a day job. Then, also started freelance writing/blogging. From that point on (and I still continue to) write, and then write some more.

Ever since, I started providing end-to-end digital marketing services and that pays the bills.

But I have to agree to on inane appeal for teaching courses. There’s a higher perceived value for courses and someone can teach something well, there’s promise (and this is the line I am trying to ease myself into).

I only wish I read this blog post 18 years ago 🙂

I guess we’ve all had our disaster stories when we started blogging, right? Honestly though, I wouldn’t change a thing because it’s shaped me into who I am today. 🙂

Life has given me my fair share of lumps but we get up and keep on going. High five for that!

Oh yeah, teaching a course is big right now. If I didn’t have a fear of getting in front of the camera, I would definitely go for it. 🙂

Thanks for reading my post and for your comment Ash!

Have a great rest of the week!

    Donna,

I am not one to take on extra tasks. As a therapist and coach and former Professor of Health and Physical Education, I want to share the knowledge I have acquired – and – I want to highlight so many of the people I have known and admire who have dedicated their lives to helping others. So that started me on first speaking on different love and relationship summits and then creating and hosting my own.

The amount of work involved is enormous – day and night for about 2 months – but the reward is building my lists, building my connections with some amazing people doing incredible work in the world, and making some money as well as providing affiliate links to all the speakers.

So I tend to use my blog to help promote a current project or a particular person or theme rather than directly monetizing my writing.

    Warmly,

    Hi Cori,

Excellent. You amaze me with all the ways and means you uncover to earn money online or offline, side-hustle style. I do that through my blog in some ways, Over 10 income streams as we speak and I just started Steemit this week, where you earn Steem Dollars by creating content then networking. A little confusing to me as it is crypto-currency, so I need to convert to Bitcoin and still learning how to get it to USD, but at least it is SOME form of currency LOL. Super list. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Ryan, bud, I think you have the side hustle thing down pat! 🙂

I’ve been seeing a lot of the crypto-currency/Bitcoin thing lately but I haven’t had a chance to look into it. From the outside though, it looks confusing. But if it’s going to add to my botton line, it’s worth doing the homework for. 🙂

    Hi Cori and Donna,

That was an excellent post. With these strategies of making money in place, I guess no newbie blogger should ever complain of struggling to make money online while they watch their blog grow.

I also advice, if you are already working somewhere as a full-time employee, don’t resign yet until your blog grows to the point it will be capable enough to generate twice what you were paid earlier. That way, you won’t feel the common dryness bloggers experience at the early stage of starting their blogging career.

It wasn’t funny when I started but when I look back today, I feel so proud of the decision I took to go into blogging full-time. As a side hustle, I do a lot of coaching, especially for people that want to learn how to use social media to generate sales and leads.

My advice to anyone whose income from his/her blog doesn’t satisfy is that they should tap into any of these side hustles Cori talked about here. It’s informative indeed.

    Keep up.

      Hi Emenike,

Thank you for saying that – you’re are absolutely right. These side hustle gigs should keep the well from being dry! 🙂

I also want to thank you for the advice you shared – not to quite a job before the blog takes off. I did that and it was hard to get from under. Took us years, in fact.

I think coaching is a great tool for new bloggers. I was a coach for sales reps and have been playing around with the idea to offer coaching for new blogger too. But, I’m still thinking about it. 🙂

Thank you for reading my post and for your valuable comment! It’s nice to e-meet you!

    Hi Cori,

In the beginning of blogging journey, most of the bloggers fear about if they will make any money or not. Either they are too focused on how to make money online or they are just trying anything without caring about what their blog is all about.

How can you make money as a blogger until you understand your own niche and what your readers want from your blog? Other than blogging people can make money doing various online jobs such as doing research, selling items and testing websites also.

When it comes to making money as a blogger, people do fall in love with AdSense only, but I think otherwise. I believe in affiliate marketing.

Opportunities are endless, just a blogger needs to understand that what is his goal and how to achieve it. Thanks for sharing.

      Hi Gaurav,

Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. I agree with you about new bloggers being focused on the money rather than learning how to blog, connect with others. Little do they know, the money comes after.

It’s always good to have a plan for how we’ll make money. As new bloggers, the money doesn’t come in right away, so these side hustle gigs can help bring in revenue in the meantime.

    Hi Cori and Donna,

Wow, Cori, that’s awesome that you know so much about side gigs. While I haven’t done a lot on your list, I did sell some items on eBay once. I figured I wasn’t using them so I threw up an auction and they sold within 24 hours. It was pretty neat and extremely easy to do.

I even made a little bit of a profit after the eBay listing fees. I actually hundreds of old CD’s sitting in the basement that I no longer use, because I have Spotify. I may have to check out the DeCluttr site to see if I want to sell them.

I am fortunate enough to where I don’t have to worry about my blog not bringing in a full-time income yet. I freelance while I work on my blog. Although, I really want to leave the freelancing behind.

Right now, I am just grateful that it does pay the bills. When we all start a blog, I think we believe it’s going to start making money overnight. As you know, this isn’t my first blog, I’ve had several. This is just the first blog that I am sticking with and making it work.

Earning $25 for your first year wasn’t bad, I can’t even remember if my first blog (back in the day) earned anything…probably not 🙂

You’ve definitely come a long way and have learned a lot. Thanks for sharing these resources with us, I have no doubt they will help bloggers earn a side income while they continue working on their blog.

    Have a great day 🙂

I do side hustles every now and then. Right now I’m doing quality assurance calls. For some reason I enjoy it so why not make a little money doing it. 🙂

Thank you Susan. It has been a heck of a journey and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. The best thing about blogging is that you never stop learning. 🙂

    Hi Mi Muba,

Thank you! It was a great moment for me when Donna invited me to guest post. 🙂

I meet a lot of new bloggers who struggle with the same thing. And you’re right, it’s not as easy to make money online as it was some years ago. That’s why it’s good to have a list of resources to fall back on.

Or another business, like your green consultant business. I do some side projects as well to help add to the cash flow…we have to be creative and keep the wheels spinning. We can’t sit idle and wait for it to happen. 🙂

    Hi Cori

Great to see you here at Donna’s blog.

Very timely post indeed as many bloggers do complain that they earn but not to support their living as full time and do need some extra resources.

You well mentioned all the resources that one can pick a few from them to earn in addition to his regular blog income. It is a fact now it is not as easy to earn million with a blog as it used to be some time earlier.

I have a big support from my offline gigs as I do have my own green consultancy business that work well to support my regular blogging income.

Many thanks for sharing this post quite helpful for newbie and struggling bloggers.

Awesome resources Cori! I have to say a word about Mechanical Turk because they saved my cookies after my divorce. I was working 3 jobs and still struggling to cover bills left behind by my husband and a huge mortgage payment so not much was left for, you know, food. Someone suggested Turk and (like so many others) I almost gave up the moment I saw the skimpy payments. But here’s the thing – you can filter out those tiny hits and the more hits you do and the better quality your work the more they make available the higher paying jobs. I earned $2,000 that first year from Turk. Not a huge amount by any means, but when you’re struggling it can make ALL the difference! In fact, I still spend a little time on Turk each week to keep my “master” rating but now I use that money for special treats for me.

      Hi Marquita,

Thanks for sharing your story with us! I can relate to you for sure. These side hustle gigs helped me make ends meet, too. They don’t pay much – but it adds to the bottom line. I used to make about $100 a month on survey sites. I would pay my gas bill – $30 and the hub’s motorcycle insurance – $48 and still have a little left over.

      That’s how I made it work. 🙂

You’re right about using the filter on Turk. When I first logged on and saw $.01 cent for a project I cringed my nose and thought, nope, not for me. Then I played around with the filters and the big buck projects are there – just hidden between the other penny offers, lol.

I love that your extra money is spent on you. I spend it on the grandkids but I might be stingy one month and treat myself. 🙂

Have a great rest of the week Marquita!

Hi Cori, and good to see you are Donna’s blog 🙂

What an informative post! I loved the side hustle gigs you mentioned. Also, this was surely a well-researched article, which would be a great resource for anyone looking to make extra money, whether they blog or don’t!

Honestly speaking, I never really had the time to venture deep into gigs, but I did try my hand at a few places, but that was in the very initial stages when I started off my online career. Then, of course, I got into freelance writing and later blogging, which left me no time for anything else. Now, my better half is polishing his skills to start his WordPress services very soon, along with our new community – so focus is on those presently. But you know how life gets in the way, yet we move on at the best pace we can, isn’t it?

Thanks for sharing all of this with us. Have a nice week ahead, both of you 🙂

      Hi Harleena!

You and I have a lot in common as far as how our blogging journey started. I did a lot of these side hustles when I first started. Then as my blog grew annd I rolled out with services and products of my own, I didn’t do it as often.

I still do side hustle gigs but for clients doing quality assurance calls or web research. I guess I’m just an internet nerd that way, LOL. 🙂

I think it’s great that your hubby will be offering WordPress services – those of use who aren’t that tech savy can use the help. I’ll be looking out for it. I’m looking for help actually and I’m hoping it’s one of the services he offers and I wish him all the best with this new venture! 🙂
