8 Expert Blogs Reveal How Passion Impacts Your Blogging Business

This post was most recently updated on July 26th, 2017

Passion Impacts Your BloggingHave you ever thought about how passion impacts your blogging business?

Bloggers often struggle with what seems to be endless failure.

One of the first things I usually tell them is that they must understand what their passion is.

This should be the basis of everything you do in your blogging business.

It’s important to understand exactly how passion impacts your blogging business, even for established and accomplished pro bloggers

And it is certainly helpful when you hit those snags, and must figure out how to work through adversity.

But just determining what your passion is doesn’t tell the whole story.

In fact, you may be passionate about many things.

But you’re not going to blog about many things.

That would spread your message too thin.

Target Your Audience

You can’t be talking to too many people, too big of an audience.

One of the tricks to blogging is to define your market very, very narrowly.

It’s what we call a “highly targeted audience.”

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

That means… determine a passion of yours that you will make the central focus of your blog.

Then, you can address the specific crowd of people that share that passion.

Blog About Something Marketable

Now don’t misunderstand this.

Some people think that they can only blog about something they’re totally passionate about.

That’s not necessarily true, though, as you will see later in this article.

It may not even be a good idea to blog about your highest passion.

That’s because it may not be marketable.

Most people I work with are blogging for-profit.

And simply put, not every passion is marketable or profitable.

So, in other words, many things people are truly interested in may have a very weak profit picture built into it.

Find Your Passion

The key is to find something you are passionate about.

But something that also can be marketable.

When you do this, you’ll be on the right path to learning exactly how passion impacts your blogging business.

That’s my perspective of how passion impacts your blogging business.

Now, let’s see what some other leading bloggers have to say about this.

1. Amy Lynn Andrews

Amy Lynn Andrews makes the point that you need to be blogging about something that you’re “passionate” about, not just “interested” in it.

Otherwise, she believes that you’re really killing your business before you even get it started.

That’s because it takes a lot of work to develop and run a blog.

If you’re merely “interested” in your topic, then the chances of you doing all that hard work consistently are slim.

That’s especially true when things get tough…

  • having to come up with content all the time,
  • promoting it consistently
  • and all the rest.

That is just the beginning.

How Passion Impacts Your Blogging Business

Read more… https://amylynnandrews.com/how-to-find-your-passion/

You’re not going to want to do that with something that you have only a passing interest in.

Amy challenges you to find a list of things that you are truly passionate about.

That requires you to dig deep into your dreams.

She challenges you to dream of all the things that you would be totally excited about to work on.

Then, from that list, settle on the one you think would have a strong enough profit potential to make it the foundation niche of your blog.

As Amy says… “you like an interest, you live a passion.”

So, start dreaming and find your true passions.

2. Crew

On the Crew blog, Belle Beth Cooper tells us that you don’t have to start with your passion.

You only need to cultivate it.

Passion Impacts Your Blogging Business

The point is well taken.

Sometimes, we can’t just jump into our dream blog.

It simply may not be in a good enough niche to build a profit base from.

But if we cultivate what we’re already doing, or what we have a natural talent for… it can certainly develop into a passion.

It might be that the passion derives more from the fact that you’ve found a way to help people, regardless of the niche or topic.

3. Smart Blogger – Jon Morrow

On his Smart Blogger blog, John Morrow talks about how you have to become a… smart blogger (what else, right?).

Now, he’s not talking directly about passion here.

He’s talking about being a smart enough blogger to learn how to give value to your readers.

He’s talking about re-orienting your life, your habits and your thinking processes in order to accomplish that.

In other words, your passion is not so much your topic or your niche… but your passion is you… yourself.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

It’s you that your readers want to learn from.

How many times have we heard the people don’t buy products, they buy people?

So true.

Will you become the best smartest and most helpful blogger you can be?

Whatever the niche?

Whatever the topic?

When your passion becomes part of your own self growth, then your blogging business will show the results you’re looking for.

4. Problogger – Darren Rowse

In his Problogger podcast, Darren Rowse Talks about how to maintain inspiration and avoid blogger burnout.

When you’re passionate about your topic you tend to want everything to go smoothly.

I think many bloggers assume that because of their passion about a topic, people will just magically gravitate to their blog.

But it takes work.

This is why it’s important to be passionate.

Because you will need to get down to work.

Darren talks about ways to avoid feeling overwhelmed and burnt out from all the many tasks that blogging requires.

How Passion Impacts Your Blogging Business

Listen to the podcast… https://problogger.com/podcast/how-to-stay-inspired-and-avoid-bloggers-burn-out/

I think what it really gets down to is this… develop a feeling and conviction that you’re in the right place when you’re blogging.

Talking about the burdens and business part of blogging, Rowse observes that “I find it easier when I am in a groove and a rhythm with my blogging.”

That “groove and rhythm” is not easy to find when you blog purely for profit instead of passion.

5. Duct Tape Marketing – Jon Jantsch

At Duct Tape Marketing, Jon Jantsch agrees that doing what you love is important for bloggers.

But getting good… really good at it… is what turns it into a passion.

How Passion Impacts Your Blogging Business

How Passion Impacts Your Blogging Business

I think that’s so important to understand.

I’ve known people in many walks of life who only started getting really passionate about something when they started achieving success in it.

Blogging is no different.

While I don’t think that you should blog primarily for profit, many bloggers do.

And those that start achieving good results often experience unexpected levels of enthusiasm.

As even more success accrues, they actually start getting pretty passionate about it.

I think people need to know they’re doing something well.

Call it positive feedback, good vibes or whatever.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

But as you start getting good at something, you just start feeling better about yourself.

It’s kind of like biofeedback.

As you start seeing positive biometric feedback, your mood and then, even your health, can begin to improve.

That’s because you are hard-wired to seek improvement, I believe.

As you begin to experience it, your passion level increases.

Your desire to do even more, and rise to even higher levels is stimulated.

I call that passion.

And I see it happen all the time with bloggers.

6. John Chow

John Chow hosted an article that talks about “the strange relationship between passion and success.”

It describes the fact that passion does not lead to success, but rather ==> success leads to passion.

Passion Impacts Your Blogging Business

Read more… http://www.johnchow.com/the-strange-relationship-between-passion-and-success/#

I think this is similar to what Jantsch was getting at when he said  “I love what I do, but I get paid for what I finish.”

As the Chow article explains, you don’t want to just be a quitter.

You don’t want to simply quit every time something is not going the way you hoped.

And certainly, you can’t just keep jumping to a new thing every time you meet resistance.

But you should focus your efforts on “building momentum where there is momentum to be built.”

And again, like the biofeedback example I gave you… “Follow the positive trends on the projects that are seeing success.”

Another way to say that is the marketing cliche…  “follow the money.”

IQ Matrix – Adam Sicinski

On the IQ Matrix blog, Adam Sicinski talks about passion a bit differently.

He describes it as a lifestyle and mindset rather than a targeted inspiration.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

In other words, it may not be so much that you are really passionate to blog about dog training, or health or financial security.

Instead, it may just be that you are a passionate “type” of person.

You tend to be passionate about everything you do.

In fact, Sicinski even gives guidance for developing a passionate personality if you don’t already have one.

Passion Impacts Your Blogging Business

Read more… http://blog.iqmatrix.com/living-with-passion

The IQ Matrix article then goes on to describe several things you can do to increase your capacity to be passionate about the things you do.

For bloggers, this points to the importance of finding out how to help people solve their problems.

When you are helping people solve their problems, you instinctively improve your level of passion.

So again, we see the script is flipped.

Instead of being passionate about helping people, as most bloggers tell me they are…

you develop passion for blogging as you start getting good at helping people.

It may sound like a play on words.

But really, when you think about it…it’s a major shift in your thinking about how you can earn a living by blogging from your passion.

    Hi Donna,

i must admit i am amazed by the way you treated this topic, you handled it like no other, speaking of passion it is a must have tool for any body who wants to be successful in business. Thats why i refer to passion as “emotional capital” ,
if you have money and you don’t passion to groom it then it is a waste.

I believe that this article is going to help a lot of people to know what passion realy means. And how to deal with it in business.

    Blogging is nothing without Passion.

I see people go for niches they are not passionate about or have little knowledge in

What do you love thinking or doing most of the time? That should be your niche.

    Hi Ben,

I started writing with my passion in the self-help edge but as I grew into marketing so did my blog. So I do think that we can allow ourselves to grow as our passions evolve.

True…I believe what I meant when I wrote that all passions may not be marketable is if a person doesn’t seek the specific marketing experience they need. I know a guy who sells teeth whitening strips and labels it some catchy name. He’s making money hand over fist and its the same strips one can buy in the store. The difference is that he has an edge on the market with his catchy name, uses only visuals (his sister is a model and has white teeth lol) So yes anything can be marketed if people think out of the box.

Hi Donna. I think passion drives the whole thing but I don’t think the passion has to be there at the beginning. When you started blogging you had no idea what you were doing but it was a means to an end. As you learn more and get more comfortable with it you then develop a passion for it. I think the same thing goes for anything. Success can definitely feed the passion, but I think the passion comes originally from the learning.

There is one thing you said at the beginning of this article that I disagree with. You said that not all passions may be marketable. I think if you are passionate enough about the subject and able to think far enough out of the box then you can find a way to make any passion marketable. Some people say you can’t make money in art, but there are many who have. Same goes with writing. I’m sure “they” said the same thing about blogging when it started. There is always a way.

    Donna,

What an interesting article. I had not thought about success leading to passion rather than passion pushing you toward success.
I can say that for my virtual summits, I began with intense passion. Yet the process is extremely time consuming, even overwhelming.
So many details and so many things can go wrong. The first 3 summits went rather well – and then the 4th one was a let down.
People speaking on the 4th summit did not keep their agreement and hardly shared. I felt so discouraged I almost wanted to give up.
But my passion to connect with leading authors, speakers, therapists, coaches in my love and relationships niche led me to continue.
And just today, while in the midst of creating the new summit, someone bought one of the previous summits. That little bit of unexpected
success has spurred me on to make this next one even better than the ones before.

Blogging is the same way. A little success leads to more passion. And a return of passion leads to more unexpected success. It goes back
    and forth.

    Warmly,

    Erica

    Hi Donna,

You are at it again with another mind-blowing article. I was particularly caught by John Chow’s point of view.

For two reasons, he caught my attention. First, the title, “The Cart Before the Horse,” coincidentally is the title of the eBook I’m working on currently and secondly, his position that it’s, “Success that leads to passion,” sounds like the opposite of what most people talk about but when we critically look at it, John is right.

    This is indeed very informative.

    Cheers.

    Hello, Donna. Great Post.

    Liked what Amy Lynn.

When we drive passion towards self-growth, and the growth is also resonated in our business then we are evolving from a blogger to an entrepreneur. The passion should be driven to create a sustainable business, and it starts with the simple concept of placing your readers at the center. Modifying Peter drinkers quote ” keep your readers happy and they will keep you in the business”. A value driven activity fueled by the passion for achieving financial stability should be our motto. We need to learn and expand our horizon, learn about things what our target customers are interested and address it rather sticking to same topics.

Liked the article and have shared it on my Twitter.

      Hi Nishant,

Indeed, it all starts within. As we apply our self-growth it reflects on our business. Then we can evolve from blogger to marketer.

We have to keep our readers at the center because that’s our business….teaching others. I do like the motto you have given because it is so true.
We never should stop learning and applying.

Hi, Dona. This is such an insightful post. As you rightly said passion is the main driving factor if someone wants to be in the blogging game for some time longer. otherwise, I have seen people quitting after few months of blogging. that is is so painful. Practice and perseverance are the keys. I believe that practice and continual approach may develop passion within you. Every good thing in this world takes a good amount of time and effort. I am going to share this on twitter for sure. Thanks for such a good article.

      Hi Rupesh,

It sure is painful to see such great people stop blogging after a while. I see too much of that.

It does take a lot of practice and patience. But if we have an off line business, it would apply too. This is what we have to remember when we have a business online. We have to look at some start up companies offline and see how hard they are trying to make a go of it. Some win, some fail. And failure always has to do with loosing passion for the product.

      Thanks so much,

Awesome advice as always Donna! I totally get the concept and importance of passion … I’ve been passionate about my particular topic pretty much my whole life. I do think it is worthwhile to occasionally take a step back to gain perspective on where we are in our journey, which is what I’m about to do by taking an entire month away from, well, all things digital.

My first blog was only available to my clients which were spread across 4 Islands in Hawaii. It worked so well that morphed into a public version and grew from that. But what I have to remind myself from time to time is blogging is not the point, it was always meant to be a means to an end. Lately, it’s become the “point” so I’m regrouping and re-prioritizing during my time off because I want to get back to writing, teaching and creating. In fact, I started this life out as an artist, a pretty darn good one, and I want to ease that back into my life as well. I don’t know what the month will reveal but I suspect my first post when I return will be pretty interesting. 🙂 Thanks for the tips and inspiration!

    Hi Donna,

All that you mentioned is so, true. 🙂

It’s important to find your passion and blog about it so it self-drives you and you’re self-motivated. But if you’re blogging to earn revenues or create a passive income stream, then you need to make sure you choose a passion that is marketable, or market or present your passion in a way that it becomes profitable. You’re absolutely spot on there.

Blogging requires a strategy and you need to treat it as a business. It’s great to read the opinions of all the blogging legends. This is certainly a helpful and valuable post for all bloggers, newbie or not.

Thanks for sharing. Have a nice, rest of the week 🙂

      Hi Harleena,

Passion sure keeps us self-motivated. When monetizing our blogs in one way or another, we have to make sure our passion is in a marketable niche.

Indeed, blogging must be treated as a business. We have to have good strategies in place to do so.

    Hi Dona,

Passion calleth deep unto deep. This is a great list up there!

Sometimes, when I feel like not to write anymore, it pushes me to write – Passion. When the family neglects and abandons your love for what you do, it accompanies you through the rocky paths – Passion. When friends decide not to believe in your dream, it encourages you to BELIEVE, DO and BE – Passion. When all hope seems to be gone, it shows you a way where there seems to be none – Passion.

Many people have different definition they can point to passion. To some, it is a gift. To another, it is a lift. But, the eight experts above knocked it off explaining how passion impacts the blogging business. While some blog for fun, others use a blog to create a platform to increase their business sales. I’d be putting the valuable tips outlined by these experts to work.

    Thanks for sharing this, Dona.

      Hi Prince,

I love the way you have described how passion can get us through. Some knock us down, call us crazy, or are impatient. Some will never understand what we do. Passion gets us through that. As long as we stand strong, we cannot loose.

    Hi Donna,

Love this post. So many times I’ve started a blog on something that I love, only to find it’s not really marketable, as you mentioned. It took me a while to figure that out. Just because I like a certain thing or activity, doesn’t mean lots of other people do too.

I do agree that you can start with something you are passionate about and if it’s a marketable niche, then the success you see from your efforts is going to make it much easier for you to continue and keep up with it. A lot of times things are right in front of you but you’re letting your other emotions prevent you from seeing it.

Thanks so much for your great video and post. I enjoyed reading it very much.

      Hi Monna,

Sometimes I want to write about everything under the sun. I am passionate about so many things, but they won’t be marketable. When I finally came into my own and kicked fear out of the way, I started doing digital products. At the beginning I was frightened, but kicked it out anyway and guess what? People liked it!

      Hi Amber,

Happy you landed here from Youtube! Your passion is a great one because there are so many people that are interested in that niche. Organic gardening is so great. One can have a large garden, or a few pots on their window sill to get good wholesome real organic food.

    Hi Donna,

I do believe that passion has to be a big part of why you blog. Yes, it’s possible to start a blog in any niche. However, keeping it going after several years is going to be a challenge if you’re not passionate about your niche.

I actually read a lot of these bloggers blogs and am constantly learning a lot from them.

Harsh says it correct, you can’t think of the money right out of the gate. Chances are when you start a new blog, the money isn’t going to come right away.

You have to provide quality content and actually help people before they will even consider doing business with you.

Thanks for sharing this article with us. Now I have a couple more blogs to read this morning.

    Have a great one 🙂

      Hi Susan.

If we don’t have passion in our niche, we will eventually fall off the blogging wagon! It is great that you know these bloggers because there are always things to learn from them.

Harsh’s words are so true. I’ve met bloggers that went in it for the money. Now their blogs are somewhere in the cloud.

I’ve had bloggers burnout before and I actually let the game for several years. I let my domains expire and didn’t even care that I actually lost some the content. I realized that I did it wrong back then. I focused on finding topics I thought would make money and I didn’t stop to consider whether I actually liked the topic. I made money back then, too, and it didn’t matter. I finally know where my passion is – helping others navigate the blogger’s world so that they don’t make the same mistakes I did. This is such an important topic!

      Hi Joy,

Making those “mistakes” years ago has given you a wonderful passion to help others. When you think of how many bloggers actually start every day, they do need guidance. Making sure they don’t make the same mistakes as you have is a blessing to them.

Totally digging the passionate takes of each of these successful bloggers Donna. Love it.

My passion helps me do what I do. Some folks feel I am a machine. I am human. Honest 😉 But by feeling super passionate about blogging and helping folks and by genuinely having fun doing what I do, wow does it get easier and easier for me to be up a little before midnight now reading this post and writing this comment. After getting my 3 guest posts lined up and submitted for the day.

    Passion makes me go.

But I appreciate John Chow’s take too; I started with passion but in the same respect, I did become more passionate as I saw more success. I gained more confidence and clarity in what I was doing when my success slowly expanded.

      Hi Ryan,

If I were to give the analogy of passion you would be a fine example.

You are so passionate about writing and the proof of the pudding is that one can see you at least three to four times a week on different blogs. Not to mention your Facebook Live every day. You are a giver and that is what is so admirable about you.

Passion makes me go too lol. Sometimes I admit I will have a down day, but that’s my body telling me to unplug and do a Donna Day which I do.
Then, coming back the next day I’m a superhero he he he.

      I love John Chow’s take.

Hi Donma, I love this! It surely does take passion to continue to blog year after year. I’ve been loving your video’s too on Facebook. You go girl!

I loved Harsh’s statement that money should come second to blogging. And that time flies when you are having fun blogging.
I would never recommend someone to blog just for moeny, they have to love a topic, be willing to continually learn and grow with.

I’d add having a little thick skin helps for the skeptics and those that critique you too! Stick with it….Too many quit before success.
