Overcome Blogger Overwhelm and Achieve Amazing Results

This post was most recently updated on September 9th, 2017

Overcome Blogger OverwhelmOvercome blogger overwhelm and you can achieve amazing results.

That’s pretty good news.

After all, every blogger wants to achieve amazing results.

But that’s never going to happen if you are spinning in 100 directions and switching paths every other day.

You have to know where you’re going.

And, of course, you have to have clear goals.

Finally, you need to put your mind at ease with what you’re doing.

Special: Get My Best Blogging Secrets Now (Free)

When you do these things and you can overcome blogger overwhelm.

Until you do, you’ll be frustrated and will feel like no matter how many things you do in a day it’s never enough.

This can obviously be exhausting.

But it can also lead to anxiety, stress and a break down in your business altogether.

Overcome Blogger Overwhelm

So, let’s talk about the things that can help you overcome blogger overwhelm.

I’m going to start with one of my favorite pieces of advice to bloggers.

Do Less

In order to get more done, you just simply have to do less.

It only stands to reason that if you have 50 things to do it’s going to be pretty hard.

If you do 10 of them you feel like you got nowhere.

You might do 20 of them, but then you’d probably do them so poorly that they were hardly worth doing at all.

Even if you actually did 30 of them, you’d very likely be so exhausted that you wouldn’t want to work for another week.

And most likely of all… if you gave yourself 50 things to do, it’s quite possible you’d do 0 (zero!) of them.

The Crumble

That’s because you feel so overwhelmed that you’d simply crumble underneath the weight of stress and anticipation.

And if you didn’t do anything at all, you’d probably get so stressed you would be paralyzed from doing anything else in your business, too.

At least until you finally get real and cut down the demands you are making on yourself.

Stop trying to do more than you can.

And please, don’t try to keep up with others.

Kelly Exeter, writing on ProBlogger, warns bloggers about trying to do everything they see others doing.

Overcome Blogger Overwhelm

So forget about 50 things.

Forget about 10 things, even.

Everyday give yourself no more than 3 things to do.

That’s all.

You could even do less.

But don’t allow yourself to do any more.

The more things you let yourself get involved in, the more sidetracked you’re going to get from your main purpose… your big goal.

Focus On Your Goal

Speaking about your main purpose, let’s talk about that.

Your main purpose for blogging is to achieve something, right?

But sometimes, you might feel like you’re “moving… but aren’t going anywhere,” as Amanda Cross observes.

Yeah, we’ve all been there, haven’t we? (be honest, now).

Well, Amanda has a real solution for you…

Read more… How To Fight Overwhelm As A New Blogger

I just love that advice!

Thanks Amanda, for the kick in the pants 🙂

So what is it you are trying to achieve?

You can’t be trying to achieve 10 things.

We’ve already established that.

Instead, you have to work at achieving just one main thing.

Your Big Goal

This becomes your one big goal.

And it becomes the main reason that you wake up everyday and run to your blog.

If you don’t have that big goal, you’ll probably wake up every morning and run to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

They aren’t going to take you where you want to go.

Believe me.

So have get one big goal for your blogging business.

Tackle that big goal with 3 main tasks you give yourself, each and every day.

Stay focused on that one goal.

Know that those 3 main tasks all point to it, one way or another.

Keep your eye on your own big goal.

Simply focus on your endgame, nothing else.

Rebecca Viner gives a great little tip here in her article on how to avoid blogging overwhelm.

Overcome Blogger Overwhelm

Rebecca’s article is on The Wonder Forest: How To Avoid Blogging Overwhelm

She knows how easy it is to constantly disrupt your workflow when something catches your eye.

Maybe it’s an interesting article, or a video about something you’re working on.

Don’t drop everything change and change direction.

Instead, Rebecca suggests that you use an SIFL (Save It For Later) tool.

She recommends Pocket, Blog Lovin’ and Pinterest as good SIFL tools.

My favorite SIFL tools are Pocket and Evernote.

What do you use?

Visualize

Now, the next big thing I’m going to tell you is that you need to see yourself accomplishing your goals.

You need to visualize that each and every day.

Remember the Blogging Success Mindset – You Can Do It When You Believe It.

And you’ll believe it when you see it.

So visualize.

Use affirmations to do this.

Or, you can simply meditate.

And when I say meditate I’m not talking about “emptying your mind.”

I’m talking about filling it with images of yourself in action, accomplishing that big goal you are working toward.

See yourself getting there.

See yourself doing each little tasks that will help you accomplish your big goal.

Visualize every day.

Visualize in different ways.

When you do this you will know that you are walking down the right path.

Every time you sit down to do something you will know it is purposeful.

This will give you a sense that you are in control and not overwhelmed by the enormity of blogging.

Checklists

Did you know…

Checklists can magically improve your productivity and focus?

So true.

Make checklists of everything you want to accomplish.

Overcome Blogger Overwhelm

If you want to write an e-book, break it down into 10 steps.

Then make a checklist for each of those 10 steps.

Grab that checklist when you start your day.

One of the beautiful things about starting your day organized, as Brendon Burchard illustrates, is that it makes you feel purposeful.

Overcome Blogger Overwhelm

More… Brendan gives you 4 Steps to Avoiding Overwhelm

So, for instance, you want to write that e-book, but 10 steps just make you feel dizzy, right?

Overwhelming, for sure.

You don’t know where to begin, like there’s no point.

But you’ll feel purposeful when you get yourself organized.

Take just one at a time (not 10, eeeek).

Just do each of the steps on your checklist for step 1.

Then do each of the steps on your checklist for Step 2.

Do this day after day and you won’t feel overwhelmed.

Yet, you will accomplish so much that it will be exhilarating and inspiring instead of overwhelming.

And it all starts with that simple little checklist.

I was reading a really interesting roundup of ways that expert bloggers have found to overcome overwhelm.

Overcome Blogger Overwhelm

Overcome Blogger Overwhelm

Sure enough, there was testimony of this little power technique that I call checklists….

Overcome Blogger Overwhelm

Read the full article here… 22 Bloggers Show You How To Overcome Blogger Overwhelm

You see?

It’s not just me telling you to use checklists in your blogging business.

Savvy bloggers know this little trick, too… teehee.

The funny thing about overwhelm is that you’re so afraid of all the things you have to do.

But as you just go one step at a time and accomplish them… they get done.

You can look back at the end of the month and see all the things you’ve done.

Then you’ll tell yourself “wow, I can’t believe I did all that.”

But if you would start it off by telling yourself you had to do all that, you probably would have never gotten out of bed, you know what I mean?

Blogging Is Fun

I know blogging is a serious business for people.

It’s a vehicle that you use to try to develop a business.

After all, you’re trying to establish financial independence, right?

Special: Get My Best Blogging Secrets Now (Free)

That’s no small matter.

So you’re trying hard to be a serious and productive entrepreneur.

But lighten up.

Life is not all about accomplishments and productivity.

Nor is blogging.

Blogging is fun by it’s very nature.

You get to…

  • meet lots of people
  • hang out with folks that like doing the things you do
  • talk to them on your blog, on Facebook and videos

It’s just a great thing to do, to be involved in and you should be having fun every day with it.

If you’re not having fun then there is really no point to it.

Get Over Yourself and Reach Out

Remember, blogging is not just about you.

It’s not about hiding behind your computer and cutting off everyone in the world except some invisible group we call “readers.”

Reach out to other bloggers.

Mastermind with them.

Build joint ventures.

Encourage them along their journey, and inspire them with yours.

Blogging is a people business.

So don’t hide behind your computer, or your busy and productive schedule.

Get out there and meet people.

Have some fun.

You’re in the right place for it 🙂

    Hi Donna.

Most times worrying makes the whole process overwhelming.

What can make the process easier and fun. Is to set achievable goal for each day and don’t set goal more than you can accomplish.

    long comment ahead:

Donna found this one on Triberr. I left a comment there but also wanted to stop by and say Hi.

Like I mentioned on Triberr, this post was written for me, at least it seems that way.

    I work in waves.

Sometimes I’m all over the place chasing down the next thing while trying to juggle everything else.

At other times I am very intentional about what I work on.

The later is, of course, is my calm zone and how I get things done, well.

I was listening to Asian Efficiency podcast during my workout this morning and something really struck me.

The way we view goals is important. They described two different goal types:

    1. outcome goal – ex. Focusing on a number on the scale or blog traffic numbers
    2. process goal – ex. Focusing on working out 3x per week or publishing content 1x per week

My ‘aha’ moment while listening is that I do better at process goals than outcome goals.

For instance, working out and losing weight = If I concentrate on the scale, I sabotage myself and down I go the spiral of destructive thinking and action.

BUT, this year I decided to work on discipline.

My focus wasn’t on working out to lose weight rather on building my discipline “muscle” = to form a habit which I want to eventually become a routine.

Let’s transfer this example to blogging:

In 2016 I focused on traffic. I experimented with all sorts of “things” and eventually just burned out. I also noticed something, “what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for all” and “just because something works for someone else doesn’t mean I have to do it”.

    Sound familiar?

I think that is where the Overwhelm comes in for me and others. (focusing on outcome instead of process)

Hi Sara and welcome to my blog.

I know exactly what you mean by working in waves. I used to do that too, but overwhelm hit me and hit me hard. I wanted to throw my laptop at the wall. I got depressed and couldn’t focus. But being in business for myself almost all my life I had to shake it off and take a good hard look at myself to see what I was doing. I learned how to work smart and not hard. Working hard doesn’t do much for us. It makes us less focused because in the back of our heads we are thinking of goals.

I wrote what I needed to do to reach my goal, made a check list of things needed to achieve that (its a long check list lol) Then I broke it down into daily chores so to speak. When I check them off the endorphins go off in my brain and I feel great. Much like exercising.

As for the “one size fits all” for blogging or just about anything else, it doesn’t work. I’ve taken many courses like this but took from it the information needed and tweaked it to my own liking. As long as we don’t act like zombies following the leader, we will be OK. 🙂

      Many thanks for stopping by,

Hi Donna. Blogging can certainly be addictive and it can easily overwhelm you. There’s so much to do these days before you start seeing some ROI on the time and money you pour into it. Setting goals, or at least a goal, is certainly good advice. I don’t know if I’d suggest doing less, but it’s better than taking on too much work that you can’t do.

      Hi Anand,

Blogging sure can be addictive if we allow it lol. Doing too much will tire you out. Doing less will help your focus and energy. I am not saying sit home on the couch and watch TV he he. Rather, do the most important thing first. Then think of your blog. The most important thing being anything you monetize. There are different ways to do it….social media, email lists, etc.

      Thanks!

    Hello,

I always believe and follow 80/20 rule. So I guess doing less on the things which produce good results should be prioritized. I procrastinate a whole lot and never manage to get anything done. So these tips are really helpful.

      Hi Jeetu,

That 80/20 rule always seems to work out just fine. When it comes to procrastination it can eat you up so do at least one productive thing at the beginning of the day and the rest will fly.

    Great post.

I love the concept of doing just 3 things. I know that for myself I find it frustrating to get a lot of things done…mainly because I’m trying to do 50 things like you said.

The easy solution would be to delegate but an even easier solution is to just focus on 3 things.

    Great post overall.

    Hi Donna,

Great tips and I so agree about not trying to do too much. When I first started blogging, I would work all day long (when I wasn’t doing client work). At the end of the day, my neck and shoulders hurt and I hadn’t accomplished anything.

For the past 3 months, I’ve been more focused. I know what needs to be done every morning. I will do those tasks every day. This alone has been huge for me.

I’ve been able to finish that ebook that I’d been wanting to write but never got to it. Finally published my first Kindle ebook.

It was such a great feeling to finally accomplish it. Your advice is so true. We might feel like we can be doing more. But if you focus on those important A tasks every day.

Everything else is just gravy. If it doesn’t get completed at least you got the most important things completed.

Thanks for taking the time to share this, I have no doubt it will help bloggers overcome the overwhelm.

    Have a great day 🙂

    Hi Bob,

Thanks for your awesome input here. I like your analogy about distraction and how we can jump from one thing to another…..just like riding on a road where the trees look the same, but the signs are different.

I can find myself walking in circles when there is a lot to do, but that is why I have to have a checklist. If not, I cannot focus and give my very best to even the smallest task.

Breaking things down hour by hour is such a great thing. I do 50 minutes and the other 10 left over I do some kind of exercise. (shaking those cob webs out of my head lol)

    Thanks again!

    Great advice as usual Donna.

Even though I even teach (Performance Psychology) that it is important to
focus on one thing at a time, I even find myself going in circles on occasion – and I know better!

It is the identifying what you are doing that is important. You must pay close attention
to yourself so that you know that you are getting distracted – again.

When you jump around from one thing to another to another, all that is happening
is that you are getting distracted over and over. Because you think that you
are working toward a goal, it may not seem like a distraction to you. After all, you
are working aren’t you? What is not happening is that you are not noticing that
you are driving on a different road than the one that you wanted to be on – the trees
still look the same, but you have failed to pay attention to the road signs.

That is why it is a really great idea to have that checklist as you suggest.

If I find myself wandering about in some stupor when I am trying to work,
I will sometimes write a note, or list, of what I want to do within the next hour.
    I break things down hour-by-hour.

If you are still on task after an hour (half hour, or whatever it takes), then
you know that you are still focused. If you are not, then step back and re-focus.

Recurring the old past victories can create new vibe in us allowing us to really go for that which we really want.

The fact is that it ain’t gonna be easy as you said. However, it is our duty the have the success we expect in our heads before the hand feels it and all that.

      Hi Prince,

Indeed, it ain’t gonna be easy because we have to be mindful to practice over and over again until it sinks in our brain….until it becomes a habit.

Past victories and that feeling we get when we think of it can be used to visualize what we truly want to achieve. It takes some practice, but once it clicks, it is wonderful.

    Hello Donna,

    Great shout over here 🙂

Bloggging overwhelm is something that we all cross paths some times. I know that these little joy and love from every body
we are being connected takes us to that path, but we need to look back and focus on what we really want to achieve.
Whether we want this much for our self or we want more, the hunger must not get over.

Frankly speaking I just wnat that all of my task should be wrapped up in the single day, at the end there are so many things
still left untouched. The routine continues the next day, and sometimes there is less time to get going outside the box.

Indeed we do not need to compare our self from the others, one have their own merits and tlaented, rather comparing from them
we can take lessons from their work, which we could moult and tranform it in our own ways.

I relaized after few months of my blogging career, that being simple is the key to success. If we pretend to show more than its
not going to work, we are not part of fashion industry or something like that. So its better to show the trues self to others.

    Thanks for the awesome share.

      Hi Shantanu,

It sure does happen to all of us. We get excited to get things done…we do everything until we are weary. Then look back and still sometimes not satisfied with our work and re-do it. We can get carried away. But it only leads us to exhaustion and frustration, thereby overwhelm.

As for comparing ourselves to others, we can learn from them but that’s all. We have to express our inner self which is a beautiful gift to give to others.

Yes…keeping things simple is the way to go not only for ourselves, but for others too. We can only be one thing: ourself. People have a funny way of knowing that.

First, it is my full-time day job which is also online but it is too different than blogging.

Then comes the turn of home, the often chaotic place for the bloggers. 🙂

And then the environment where it is so much discouraged to be using/working on the internet.

But.. It’s been like a whole month that I’m following one single method to be at the good focus…

And that’s to plug in my headset into my ears and listen to the songs.

That’s working so well for me. And I’ll continue to follow it. 🙂

Hope that these will keep me going for now! 🙂

Thank you for the awesome post!

    See me often!

      Hi Adeel,

Wow…you have so much on your plate! Working full time…coming home and dealing with that. Good thing you have headphones. I have mine on right now listening to “white noise” so I won’t be distracted from the noises in my home, even though I’m up in my office!

It is good to know that you are following one method of focus. It will get you far.

    Hi Donna,

Keeping things simple is an art in its self. Sharpen our focus with checklists or 3 or 4 simple tasks for the day. As Ed mentioned.

I think we all know people who take on everything, they have so much going on that eventually it will all crumble down with overwhelm. You just can’t live that way.

I like what Ryan stated, that he only does a few things and has learned over 10 years what his vision is and how he achieved it. Karen’s templates and checklists process.

I have learned to focus on my main goal, be organized and I love what I do. Pretty much what you do, but you have lovely videos like the one in this post. ( inside plug lol)

I like that do less, focus, visualize, use checklists, and never forget blogging is fun, it’s meeting and liking people.

      Hi Kathryn,

I think that the only way to have fun blogging is to keep things simple. Our content for instance, needs to be simple so that people can get a good take-away and even apply it to their lives.

Doing too many tasks will lead to overwhelm….I know…I have done it myself a few years back and it is a terrible feeling. It stops you in your tracks and makes you second guess yourself.

You my dear are organized and get things done!

    Hi Donna,

Killer post about two of my favorite core beliefs: (that I learned the hard way) ‘doing less is more’ – & ‘life’s not a competition’.

For most people, (myself included) more than 3 items on a ‘to-do’ lists causes unnecessary stress and is almost always counterproductive.

While your post is full of gems about solving the problem of feeling overwhelmed about blogging (and life in general), this speaks loudest to me:

    – have one big goal for your blogging business.

-Tackle that big goal with 3 main tasks you give yourself, each and every day.

-Stay focused on that one goal.

-Know that those 3 main tasks all point to it, one way or another.

-Keep your eye on your own big goal.

And forget about trying to keep up with the likes of Darren Rouse. His kind are otherworldly animals who’re blessed with stamina we mere mortals should only observe from a safe distance…

Great post with wonderful advice and interesting references. Thank you,
    Edward

      Hi Ed,

Good to know you practice that 3 to-do’s. Any more will cause overwhelm or even worse….giving up. I have seen many who have done it.

And keeping up with others is just plain crazy. We have to keep in mind that those who are the “superstars” were online way before us.

    Great Advice Donna!

Its true that blogging gives us a lot of freedom unlike other regular jobs but at the same time we need to have our goals and be focussed.

I had to laugh when I saw the advice from Problogger because Darren Rowse is the single biggest cause of my blogger overwhelm! Of course, I’m only kidding, but seriously he puts these challenges out to his community and I can’t seem to help but dive in head first. But hey, I love him anyway which is why I’ve been a fan for years. Moving on, I really like your other tips as well – I’m a huge fan of the 3 goals strategy, and I’d be lost without my trusty task list. Great advice all around, as always. Thanks, Donna!

      Hi Marquita,

Oh that is too funny! Darren is a wonderful teacher. Those challenges are amazing as long as you don’t get overwhelmed by them and all the rest of the things you have to do. I do the three goal strategy and it is working very well. I used to be all over the place and started not to have fun. Now I’m back in action.

Great to know you have a task list!

    Hi Donna,
My goal: Get everything done! LOL!
I try to make schedules and compartmentalize to get everything done in my day but it’s still difficult and I end up staying up too late. The cycle begins again the next day…

      Hi Amber,

I don’t know what I would do without using a checklist. I would be going around in circles lol.

It makes me so happy that my videos are inspiring to you….Thank You.

        Excellent tips Donna.

Having checklists, creating goals and focusing on doing less instead of more – all these things can work like a charm in getting amazing results (both in your life and career).

Just make sure to have a work/life balance otherwise you would easily burn out.

Also focus on spending some free time with your family and kids so you can find the joy in almost everything that you do both offline and online. I always give time for such stuff that makes me happy.

Reading books and implementing those tips can also help in achieving your goals. Great post!

    Very good advice, Donna

As Ryan said as well, being grateful for the freedom, doing things with love and joy. This does not feel like work as a usual job does.
I just days ago discussed with somebody who felt overwhelmed. I suggested, to realize that often:” Less is more”, and it worked 🙂
Keep it simple, have a few and not all tasks in mind to accomplish. “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”- Leonardo da Vinci
To get without Overwhelm to your goal, try to remember “Less is more” and get support if needed.
Thank you for this helpful post

    Hi Donna,

    Exactly 🙂

I vibe with your advice in the video too. Revisit past victories to cultivate that feeling of joy, and feel the joy now, and that joy carries you forward. I do this quite a bit, simply feeling the happiness and fun of freedom of my blessings and then bringing this energy to my work.

My intent is pretty dang big. It is a secret 😉 Between me and the Universe. But since I set the intent and let it go I feel like I let Survival Mode behind….largely for good, thank God LOL. I do less than ever, with more love and fun behind the actions. “Less” meaning, simply doing 2-4 things daily – writing guest posts, blog commenting, a little social work and Quora or Warrior Forum – and not doing any more. I put in some serious time and energy daily, yet I have never had more fun and also, I feel as chill and peaceful as ever. Plus the results are coming together nicely too.

      Hey Ryan,

That’s the way to do it….bring that great energy to your work.

I too left that Survival Mode a long time ago…even before the internet and it is so freeing! I do like the few things you do to make an important impact on your business, especially doing your social work on Quora.

I’m sure your results are coming in just as the Universe is aligned with you.

      Cheers!
