5 Reasons Why Your Blog Is Not Making Money

by Emenike Emmanuel

You must have read stories of bloggers like Michelle Schroeder, Zac Johnson, Michael Dunlop, Yaro Starak and the rest of them making thousands and even hundreds of thousands of dollars  every month doing nothing more than waking up every day to run their blogs, and now you are wondering why you are not seeing same result.

Calm down and listen to what I’m about to share with you.

Though I quite agree that time has something to do with their level of success, I won’t fail to let you know that there are key factors why are you are not making money from your blog, or at least the amount of money you wish to make.

Trust me, if you don’t take action to correct them as soon as you are done reading this article, I feel sorry to let you know that you may never make money blogging. In fact, your blog will turn out to be an expensive hobby that will lure you into debt, keep you there and frustrate the hell out of you.

I’m sure this is not the kind of experience you would want to have.

Even if you didn’t start your blog to make money like most successful bloggers will tell you, I want to believe that you don’t hate money to the point that you will turn blind eyes to this post.

So, in this post, I will reveal to you 5 unique reasons why your blog is not making money.

In the same manner like Donna will always do, I will give you 5 corresponding action plans that will turn your blog into a high income generating machine.

Here, we go.

1. You Have A Poor Money Mindset

There’s one basic truth I’ve come to learn and appreciate about money. And that is, you can never grow beyond what you believe about money.

What you believe is what determines what you will achieve in life and in business, blogging not excluded.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

If you believe you are too inexperienced, you don’t have the connections and people from your area can’t make such level of income seamlessly just from blogging, you will never make a cent from your blog.

Listen up!

Making money starts from your mindset. A mindset that counts in hundreds of dollars will never experience what it means to count thousands of dollars.

You’ve got to change your mindset if you want to make money blogging.

Often times, one of the reasons bloggers struggle to make money from their blog is because they don’t know their worth, or the worth of their blog. That is why they will willingly accept a guest post for free that the guest writer ought to have paid hundreds of dollars for.

If you are often doubting your worth, and as a result you aren’t getting the level of income you can be proud of, here is what you need to do now:

  • re-assess your background,
  • trash all negative thoughts, and
  • replace them with self-confidence in your ability (even if that ability is no way in existence).

2. You Don’t Have a Product People Want to Buy

You must have heard a number of times, that if you want to make money, you need to sell something – a product or a service. By that I mean, making legitimate money.

Many experts must have told you that. But guess, what?

They lied to you. If anybody tells you that, tell them Emenike Emmanuel from Entrepreneur Business Blog said they are talking bullshit.

That’s an incomplete truth that has kept so many bloggers struggling when it comes to making money online.

You know why?

It’s not enough to sell something. If you truly want to make money blogging, you need to sell what your readers want to buy.

Nobody came online to waste their money. Even the Rich Kids on Instagram don’t buy everything. They are always selective of what they buy even though the entire world believes they are extravagant.

But here’s the point I’m trying to make… As long as you keep churning out products that no one cares about, you will never have buyers. If you succeed in making a couple of sales it will just be your friends and family members who think it’s worthwhile to support your career.

The best way to know what your readers are interested in so that you can create a product or a paid service around it, is to monitor what they engage with most on your blog. Another way is to create a survey. You can even set up a system for asking them to pre-order it.

When you create a product people are already interested in, and you push it out with the right marketing, they will buy it in droves.

Blog Is Not Making Money

3. You Are Pushing Sales on Your Readers

Did you notice how I rounded up the last paragraph above?

In case you didn’t, here’s what I said, “When you create a product people are already interested and you push it out WITH THE RIGHT MARKETING, they will buy it in droves.” Emphasis on, “…with right marketing.”

If you have a good product and you have a good intention but you lack the marketing skills, inclusive of how to professionally sell your products or services, you will not make money from them.

There’s a way that seems good to a blogger to sell their product but the end thereof is that your readers will hate you. Some will be kind enough to email you to communicate how badly they were hurt by your approach.  But some other people will swear on the life of their ancestors that they will never visit your blog again.

What’s the point pushing sales when you already know that it’s an outdated marketing approach that no longer works?

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

Some of the ways people push sales or try to be salesy include:

  • attaching a product to every single article they publish,
  • giving readers cheap and less quality content because they want them to buy valuable ones at a fee, and
  • making their posts all about their business.

If you are guilty of that, desist.

The most brilliant and professional way to sell your products or services is to first give out loads of valuable contents for free. A lot of people love free things – so take advantage of that to win their heart.

Heaven won’t fall if you write a blog post of 3,000 words and give it out for FREE without attaching any paid online course or eBook to it.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t attach your eBook and paid online courses, but I think that it should be done sparingly so that your readers will feel safe to buy from you.

4. You Have a Limited Knowledge of Ways to Make Money Blogging

There are so many ways you can generate consistent income on your blog. But the basic truth is, they don’t all have the capacity to yield the same level of income.

While some can only make you money in hundreds, others might make money in thousands and others in the millions of dollars.

But if you get yourself stuck in those ones with limited capacity, you will never experience the next phase of it.

I worked so hard to get Google AdSense but after I had gotten it, reality came down on me.  If I could ever hit a thousand dollar income in a month, I needed to be getting tens of thousands of page views every single day. But was my blog mature enough for that? No.

This reality made me to start thinking outside the box. I started exploring other avenues like…

  • selling my own digital products,
  • offering coaching and consultancy services,
  • affiliate marketing,
  • sponsored posts, etc.

The interesting thing about blogging is that it opens you up to many ways of making money online.

So, if you have a limited knowledge of ways to make money blogging, you will struggle.

5. You Have Non-converting Traffic

It’s an interesting experience to wake up in the morning just to realize that your traffic had skyrocketed to at least thrice what you had a week before. It gives joy, no doubt. But if you are a marketer, you won’t get too excited if you aren’t experiencing same increase in your income which is a proof of high converting traffic.

Newbie bloggers get excited when their traffic increases.

Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic

Top bloggers get excited when their conversions increase.

Ordinarily, one will assume that an increase in traffic will likely result in an increase in conversion. But often times, that’s not true. The reverse is what most bloggers experience.

If that has happened to you or is currently happening to you, then it’s because you have non-converting traffic.

Some of the reasons your traffic is not turning into sales include:

  • You are targeting the wrong audience.
  • You are depending solely on free traffic.
  • Your offer is not compelling enough.

    Hi Emenike and Donna,

Great post! You have not just hit the nail on the head but also dig deep into this and talked about things that do matter when it comes to making money blogging. Too often, people expect to make xxx dollars in a time frame of two months without any mindset, converting traffic and the knowledge. Furthermore, we see several bloggers who just throw sales on readers. Too disturbing! As a reader, I would find a blog just a sales machine where you’re just asked to buy and buy.

The reason I found this a great post is that you also offered ways to overcome the obstacles that don’t let bloggers make money. Thanks again!

Hi Emenike Emmanuel and Donna Merrill,

Good article which starts with our mindset and goes on to suggest what we need to do and the mistakes we need to stop.

It seems to be so obvious that we should sell what others are interested in. But then, the product must be sold with right marketing.

    Thanks for this article.

    Donna & Emenike,

This was a really good article; I thoroughly appreciated the researched and down-to-earth information. I’m sitting here realizing that as I begin my blogging career it takes a different mindset, but no less amount of work as when I began my career as a Registered Nurse (and I thought Microbiology and Pharmacology was hard!)

Thank you for the idea of the survey. I “think” I have an idea of what my market niche is, but I’m so early in the process it’s hard to tell since I just began a month ago. I will definitely be using that as to guide me in my future blogging posts.

What I found the most convicting (maybe that’s too harsh of a word, but that is what comes to mine) was the last area ——“Some of the reasons your traffic is not turning into sales include: You are targeting the wrong audience. You are depending solely on free traffic. Your offer is not compelling enough”
—-You have given me much to think about and really sit down and plan for now & the future.

    Many thanks

I think so many people overlook the importance of mindset, I am so glad you have it up there as your first point. Mindset can be the difference in just about every facet of your life and business. I was always looking for new and better ways to do things, looking for the magic bullet to success. I now realize that what I really needed was a mindset makeover.

However, regards to my blog (just started blogging), I really wanted to write and tell my story because I know that is the only way to improve my writing skills(I know my writing is terrible).

    Hi Vishwajeet,

As Emenike says, even advanced bloggers fail to make money on their blogs for some or even all of these reasons.

The most important thing is, as you point out… to give your niche audience the help and solutions they need.

Everything is built from that foundation.

    Hi Donna and Emenike,

Your article gave me food for thought.

I get a lot of requests for people to post their articles on my blog and until now (being completely honest) my mindset has been to be grateful I could have a week off from writing LOL. Much as I enjoy writing, it does take a big chunk out of my week!

It never occurred to me to ask for MONEY to publish their articles promoting their products! Perhaps I should… even just a few dollars to start with and get me used to the idea! No idea what to charge though LOL.

Possibly a project for next year (when people are promoting their own product).

      Hello Joy,

I’m pleased to read your thought on this.

Yes, you can monetize your blog using sponsored posts and a mention on your blog. It’s a smart way to monetize your blog.

Put it into consideration next year. Once you are ready, you see a lot of companies coming around to ask for help.

As for how much you will charge them… Well, I can’t say exactly. It depends on your audience and the authority of your blog.

When you are ready, let me know. I have a template I developed recently for it.

      Cheers.

      Hi Joy,

Sure, you can get paid for sponsored posts and even just links.

I get those requests all the time but choose not to do that for several reasons.

But, yes, you can certainly use this method to monetize your blog, and a lot of bloggers do.

So, as with all things… explore and follow your own path on this.

    Good advice Emenike.

Things got easier for me in the money making department when I became honest about my poverty mindset. Most of us are raised with the idea that money runs out, that it is scarce, that you need to hoard it, and that money does not grow on trees. In the USA, in Africa, in Europe, everywhere. I had to get serious about feeling and letting go my money fears before I did the things online – and offline – that allowed more money to flow into my life.

When I did develop more of an abundance consciousness, I gave more frequently without strings attached, which was the exact energy that allowed more money to flow to me, through my blog and other channels too.

Even better? I tapped into more forms of abundance, including fabulous house sits from all over the globe. Neat how it works when you vibe at a higher energy, above the fear and scarcity that seems to pervade around most folks.

Thanks for the rocking share my friend.

      Awesome! Awesome!! Awesome!!!

Thanks Ryan. You are the boss.

Poverty mindset dealt with me some years ago. I recall walking pass so many fantastically looking barber shops because I felt in my heart that I wouldn’t be able to afford their services, not only that it was something I could afford. But the mentality of, “I don’t belong here” made me pass.

There’s so much money on the continent… There’s no scarcity of money. Instead, the money we want is with someone else. All we need to do is to give them what they want and they will give us what we want, the money.

I’m excited with the way you share value freely. Keep it up.

    Hi Donna and Emenike,

It’s nice to see you here on Donna’s blog. I loved reading your post and everything that you said is spot on. I’ve failed in the past with a few blogs because I wasn’t passionate or cared about the niche I had chosen.

I was just chasing the money. I believe that the only way to true success is to truly care and love what you do. Once you understand who you’re writing to, the words just flow without any issues. At least that’s what I’ve noticed with my current blog.

Oh and the mindset thing is huge. If you don’t believe that you can achieve the success you’re looking for, chances are you never will.

I make it a point to work on my self-development every day. It has helped me get the courage to do things that I haven’t done because I’ve managed to quiet that little voice inside of my head.

As my blog continues to grow, I eventually plan on creating my own products. Like you said though, I don’t want to spend time creating products that no one will buy or is not interested in.

Great tips and thanks for sharing them with us.

    Have a great day 🙂

      Hello Susan,

I’m also a big fan of yours. I follow even your guest posts across the web.

Yes, the mindset thing is a huge one. Every success starts from the mind. If we can’t conceive it, we can’t achieve it.

As for your product launch, don’t wait too long or you may get trapped in analysis paralysis. Watch your audience like a hawk and launch with a low price product. Watch the market and see what happens.

You can always test and test before you can get it all fixed. Meanwhile, it doesn’t negate what I have already said, as it regards to knowing what your audience really want.

      Thanks for reading.

Great to see you here on Donna’s space.

    Good shout over here 🙂

Thats the main thing which rises into the mind of the freshers. Money, why there is no sign of money on their sites inspite
of working almost for a year on their blogs. There are lot of things which one need to keep in mind when it comes to
make our blog stabnd out in the crowd.

There are so many little gaps in the crafting a blog which needs to be fillied, if it doesn’t get attention then there is
sureity that they are goinng to fall down.

That’s the key, having the correct mindset and keep moving forward with the destined goals.

    Thanks for the share.

For me number reason why their blog is not making any money is because their content are not very valuable to their blog’s visitor, when a blog’s content is useful and shareable, people will find your blog through search engine, social sharing and promoting, and people loves information that they can use as their advantage in their daily living. when people see how valuable your content and people are already visiting your blog frequently and if you have google adsense in your blog, then its impossible for you to not earn.

      Hi Paul,

Indeed, content has to be written for our readers and fine tuned for our target audience in order to be shared with others.

More than that… the most important function of any blog is to solve problems for your target audience.

If you’re not doing that, you won’t be earning much money from your blog any time soon.

These are all valid reasons why a blogger isn’t making money. I was having issues with #5 and on top of that, I wasn’t online much (or at least it felt like it) the past couple of years so I wasn’t promoting my products and services.

I did some self-analyzing and I’ve come to realize it’s my target audience. I’m hoping the changes I’m making will change that. 🙂

    Hello Emenike,

    Well said.

Did you know that for two year of blogging I made no dime?

My problem was #2. I didn’t have any product to promote to my readers and I did’t care to promote for other either or venture into affiliate marketing because I felt their comissions was too poor.

I only depended on Google Adsense but couldn’t even get an approval until after the third year.

I’m happy you learnt something in the process. It also happened to me but I didn’t spend as much years as you. But my challenge then was scaling. I couldn’t charge more even though I knew I deserve more. But fast-forward 5 years later, I hit my price and they pay in droves. Each time I remember this, I thank my God that I didn’t give up.

It’s a pleasure to have you here.

    Hey Emenike!

    I love your post here.

Your tips are super helpful. One thing that I agree with 200% is that everything starts with your Mindset.

If you don’t believe you can accomplish your goals, no matter how hard you work, you will not fully get there.

I’ve heard something from a successful entrepreneur, Les Brown, he said; “the easiest part in my journey was making one million dollars, it was believing that I could earn one million dollars that was the hardest!”

This sentence is so profound. Success starts inside of you. If you are not successful yet, and you have been working at it for a long while now, maybe you need to re-assess yourself and see where your current beliefs on money stand right now.

I had a very hard time accomplishing my goals online, and it wasn’t until I worked hard on my mindset that I made things happen.

I would highly recommend new bloggers to take their mindset and self-development super serious!

Thanks for sharing this awesome and helpful post!

    CHeers! 😀

      Hello Freddy,

Thanks for your kind words. Sure, success begins from the mind. A poor mind will achieve absolutely nothing.

Having discovered the truth, we shall continue to educate the newbie to work on their mindset, for in it lies the greatness they seek.

We hope to see you again.

        Hi Freddy,

Indeed, it all starts with our mind. This is why it is imperative that we do work on our selves first and foremost. We have to “train our brain” in order to reach goals we set out for ourselves.

        Thanks so much,

Great advice. We really need to look at what we are doing witha critical eye so that we do not make the same mistakes over and over again.

Absolutely awesome details in this blog post about why making money is difficult, if not impossible for some people. It’s crazy how hard your attitude about making money is tied to what you actually make as a blogger.

Love the point of unique perspective that directs people toward becoming experts in their niche.

Great ideas, thank you for sharing Emenike!

    Hi Emenike,

    What a great article!

Bloggers don’t always talk about making money on their blogs, but I know it’s one of the main reasons most of them are doing it.

They often come to me and ask me WHY they’re not making money on their blogs.

This article gives me the perfect resource to point them to 🙂

Thanks for the great advice you’ve given my readers here.
