Are you afraid to burn through your list?

Do you feel terrified about annoying your readers?

Are you petrified to follow up with your readers via persistent reminders?

You may be eating into your blogging profits.

Like a Blogging Ms. Pacman. Or Blogging Pacman.

I want to discuss one simple, powerful and effective but sometimes highly uncomfortable profit-boosting tip for many new, struggling or even established professional bloggers.

The Backstory

I received an email from one of my list subscribers a while back.

He explicitly thanked me for reminding him about some of my eBooks and audio books via a follow up email I sent to my list.

My reminder email influenced him to buy a few eBooks and audio books of mine.

The power of following up wins again.

Which brings you to the incredibly simple, powerful but scary tip to execute upon, to increase your blogging profits:

Follow up with your readers specifically to buy your stuff or to hire you.

No; I am not talking about sharing your latest blog post on Facebook for a second time.

Nor am I goading you to retweet your latest podcast.

I’m talking ‘bout explicitly asking or calling your readers to buy your stuff or hire you via:

  • Follow up emails
  • Calls to action at the end of every one of your blog posts
  • Follow up social media updates

I also mean to follow up persistently.

Not one follow up monthly.

I’m talking about following up to buy your latest eBook 1-2 times each week.

I call my readers to buy my latest eBook at least 3 times weekly through my emails. Could be an individual follow up email or perhaps I cue via a clear reminder at the beginning of the email.

I have sold many more eBooks and products since I began following up habitually. Ditto for landing clients.

Why Simple?

Asking your readers by typing a few words of text and publishing a quick email reminder takes a few minutes, if that.

Calling your readers to hire you or buy your stuff via a reminder call to action at the end of your post takes seconds of your time.

Both pretty darn simple tactics, right?

Why Uncomfortable?

Most bloggers fear loss.

Most bloggers feel highly uncomfortable following up with a reminder email or via persistent calls to action at the end of their blog posts because they:

  • Do not want to lose subscribers
  • Do not want to annoy readers
  • Do not want to be criticized

Following up persistently feels uncomfortable because doing so usually triggers your blogging limiting beliefs.

These range from “nobody will buy it anyway so why bother with a follow up?” to “they would have bought it the first time, anyway.”

These fears gotta go before you follow up persistently from a clear, pretty detached space, and before you make more dough.

Seriously guys; how many things in your life have you bought on a single exposure? Be honest. Probably almost nothing, because we need to find greater clarity before we pull the buying or hiring trigger most of the time.

Why A Profit Booster?

Empires are built on the principle of energetic clarity through persistence.

In laymen’s terms, when you look at, say, a billionaire, that billionaire had to clear out all the fears or doubts around servicing the masses on a huge scale and allowing in billions of dollars to become a billionaire.

They did this in part by creating immense free value, then by following up repeatedly with premium value, until the abundance dam began to slowly burst, and massive wealth flowed to them.

Following up persistently, repeatedly and diligently shows you where you are at with your clarity.

As you keep following up, a neat thing happens: you clear fears around your products or services, and as the fears clear, you keep asking or calling folks to buy or hire, and they begin to buy or hire in greater numbers.

The dam begins to crack.

Scant profits become more consistent profits.

The floodgates begin to open.

Asking people persistently to buy in via reminders simply gets you clearer on your premium offering, and when you get clear and feel pretty dang detached on the offering, the sales grow.

The Commercial Effect

Has a commercial ever grown on you to the point where you needed to buy whatever was being advertised?

I have to raise my hand.

Virtually all human beings would nod in agreement.

Being busy bees, and also, being subject to the power of autosuggestion, you likely need to be exposed to something beneficial 2 times, or maybe 5 times, or perhaps 10 times, before you clearly see the benefits and pull the trigger on the purchase.

This is why big companies pay large sums of money to advertise through repeated commercials. Many people buy after a few exposures to the product or service offered.

Ditto for your blog, guys.

You will boost your blogging profits when you ask folks through follow up emails to buy what you have to offer or to hire you because your readers tend to buy in after a few reminders, or exposures, to gobble up your premium offering.

Fabulous Clarity Finder AKA Purger of Fear

Following up helped me find immense clarity in my premium offerings.

Turns out, I didn’t follow up for the longest time because I feared:

  • I’d annoy my readers by following up with them
  • Nobody would buy on the second or third or tenth call, anyway, because my premium offerings were not that helpful
  • Following up was a waste of time; if they wanted to buy, they would have bought on the first call to action

Persistently following up through reminder emails, through reminder calls to action, through guest posts and through social media sharing helped me trigger these unpleasant fears, so I could feel and release these highly uncomfortable fears.

Dissolving the fears gave me clarity with my blogging campaign. I began following up habitually through virtually all emails I sent to my list. I also followed up with premium offerings through every blog post.

Sales increased.

I made more money.

Another neat thing happened; since I got clearer allowing in money through channels where I persistently followed up with readers, I also began to earn chedda through entirely new, unforeseen channels.

Money is like that.

If you get clear on receiving money by removing the strong fear-charge most humans associate with money, money will tend to show up in your experience through all types of online and offline channels.

Greater or lesser frequency may work for you.

Dive into those fears. Feel it out. Your intuition will guide you to the proper frequency for you.

It’s Only Money

Before you piddle in your blogging pants about following up with your readers, remember this: it is only money.

You offer something beneficial, and incredibly helpful, and valuable.

Readers exchange something called money for the immense value.

Simple exchange.

Clean exchange.

No big deal.

You are not asking for their right arm, nor their children, for the service or product offered.

It’s just money.

Repeating this concept to myself helped me get clearer and clearer on following up.

If anybody has a problem with the energy called “money”, their fear of loss and desire to live in the matrix of illiusion has nothing to do with the clarity I have in my premium offerings.

It is only money.

It is just money.

Trust me; your readers will thank you gratefully when you remind them to buy stuff that they wanted to buy, but needed to be reminded, to buy.

    Great post, Ryan!
    Truly, following up is key to making the transaction happen.

    I too have that problem, when for example I ask a blogger to add a link to my site and then they say Yes, but some time passes and they still haven’t added the link.

    They forgot because it’ obviously not their priority, but it was my fault for not following up with them sooner.
    I’m still learning to let go of my crippling fear and limiting belief.

    I’m actually one who is always being afraid, afraid of the NO, afraid of rejection. Reading this type of content is what tells me that I have to be consistent regardless of how many times I’m being rejected because every single person who when through the same path and found success, after all, was also rejected many many times, but they never gave up, and that’s how they won.

      Hi Lorraine,

      I use a little trick with emails. I take some time and write a bunch in advance. This way I don’t have to stare at an empty screen and think of what I’m going to tell them. I share my blog posts, then elaborate on them. In between I offer my products/services and some affiliate products I use myself.

    What an insightful of post. Yes, I agree Ryan, many bloggers and content marketers do not follow up their prospects because of fear of failure. And as you mentioned, they fear loosing their subscribers and other related stuff.

    Following up your audience and prospects customers has potential powerful to boost your blogging profits. For example, a fellow blogger contact me via my site’s contact form that she would like to contribute a guest post on my website. She forwarded hr pitch and it was good so I accepted.

    But after just about 5 days, I followed up with an email reminder. She replied immediately and thank me for the reminder. The result? The next day she sent her article.

    The point is, you don’t need to be afraid to take the initiatives.

    Blogging limiting beliefs, I had them. All the fears and doubts you tell yourself about selling on your blog or your email list.
    The well-known phrase “the money is in the follow up” comes to mind. For the first time, I have put out something for signing up for a fee on my blog. After reading this article I will be doing that on a regular basis.

    I hear so much about call to action, I need to do this more. I think advertising is difficult, obviously I want to sell my products but I do not ant to constantly spam. Thanks for the suggestions, I think follow up emails will be helpful.

    It is good you reminded me to check on my readers and see if they are really seeing/reading what I publish. I completely neglected that. Following up on emails is where i tend to procrastinate, i have to keep a tab on that too.

    Yes, we do write so much stuff and spend so much time researching into these subjects and there is no harm is “paid content”.

    Wow Ryan this is exactly my fear! I’ve started to add those call to actions at the bottom of my posts as I’ve seen you and Donna do so well. I should add more in them too after reading this. (And seeing how you both do it!) I don’t find them annoying from folks I know and trust.

    Are you still using Mailchimp Ryan? I wasn’t sure I could offer much with their service and have been thinking about going over to an autoresponder. I know I asked Donna about this last year and still haven’t done it 🙁 It’s something I know I have to take a hard look at and just DO it!

      This was SUCH a big fear of mine Lisa! For many years. I recall reading advice from James McAllister. He simply noted how he has no fear of asking people for a sale more than once, laying it out in simple terms. I took that tip and over time, as I embraced more of my money fears and released these blocks I began applying this approach. Reminding yourself that it is only money, no big deal, helps me.

      As for Mail Chimp I am still with them. I am such a bare bones list guy it works for me but if you want to jazz things up, Aweber or Get Response is the way to go. I only sell stuff through my blog but know some folks don’t use MC because you cannot promote affiliate links through the service. You probably do not fall into that category because you are running everything through your blog as well, methinks.

    Very informative post over here 🙂

    Indeed keep a follow track upon our readers could be one of the best ways to make them aware of what are we coming up with
    and also to remind them that, whether they had check out our latest products which we came up with. Sometimes our
    clients forget to check our sites and are unaware of the products that we would offer them. Thus its good to make them
    remind of it through emails and social media updates. Sending an email twice a week would be great reminder kind of stuff.

    Thats very true, nobody buys a thing just within a single exposure, as it involves money and people do think twice or
    cut their view clearly upon that specific product before they grab it down, thus its nothing to be afraid of,
    they know that we are here for selling our products and we need to push things to them.

    One need to be presistent with blogging, they can’t be in the lime light in just a couple of nights, thus we need to push,
    show our clarity and make our clients go boom about our products.

      Great point bro! So few folks make regular sales through a single exposure. This is why huge brands pay big bucks to blitz folks with a commercial campaign. Some buy on the initial exposure but more people make purchases after 2, 5 or 10 commercials, or calls to action. So keep getting clearer, keep following up and over time, the profits grow.     Hi Ryan and Donna,

    Great tips and a very good reminder to keep asking for the sale. It’s so easy to just focus on writing content and providing valuable free content for our readers, we need to remember to put our exclusive paid for content in front of them.

    There’s nothing wrong with asking for the sale, especially, if you know your products or services can actually help our readers.

    While I don’t always ask for a sale in every email that I send, I do have a link to all my products in all my emails. Like you said, you shouldn’t be scared of unsubscribes.

    I would rather have someone open up my emails and unsubscribe than sit on my autoresponder service and never open up my emails.

      Excellent insights Susan. It took me a long time to get over my fear of losing subscribers, or, to embrace the fact that getting clearer on growing my business could mean some shedding. Happens to everyone sometime, during their blogging careers. It is so much better to have engaged subscribers – even if they eventually opt on of your list – because it means humans are joining, reading, and gaining clarity, versus some of those bloggers who have huge lists of basic numbers, aka, people who signed up because they were paid pennies, or for some other lame bait.     The post is aptly named because, as you’ve referenced, the issue of email frequency has been (and probably always will be) a touchy subject. As usual, Ryan your advice is clear and straightforward. That said, I can tell you I would unsubscribe the first week I received multiple emails reminding me to buy something, but that’s me and I almost never subscribe to lists anymore for that very reason. Yes, I know we’re talking about our followers, and mine consistently tell me once a week is the optimal frequency for them. Thank you for stirring the pot a bit and encouraging us to think about these things, it’s important and always appreciated!

      It’s interesting Marquita for sure. The way I see it, is we find folks who really resonate with our style by getting clearer and more confident with our offerings. Those who are not a match with release on us and vibe with like-minded people, and those who vibe with people who follow up with sales emails will gradually find them. Neat how it works. The moment I started following up regularly my list grew quickly and I began getting thank you emails from subscribers who noted they appreciated my follow ups. But at that, I know some folks unsubbed and even sent me emails about my frequency, and emailing on Sundays, etc. All about trusting your intuition, diving into your fear and noting long term trends.     This post really resonated, so much so that I wrote a post and referenced it in my post. Sometimes we just have to rethink our positions and get to the meat of the meal. It’s easy to get caught up in giving, until you’re not really making a profit. But the PROFIT is what keeps you building your business and able to share what you share. Thanks for this article.

      Hi Marios,

      Just ask people regularly and persistently to buy your affiliate marketing products. Same principle 😉 But you need to dive into the fear of rejection, or the fear of loss, to put the practice into action. The next newsletter you send out, lead off with a call to action to buy whatever affiliate stuff you have to offer. 1 product, preferably. As you write the words, see how you feel. Most bloggers feel highly uncomfortable doing this, or desperate, or any energy other than love or fun. Be with those feelings and then, release, and then, send out the newsletter when you are done.

        Hi Ryan,

        Excellent tip.

        Following up through emails or calls is both easy to say and hard to do. It’s a daunting task but just do it. You’ll hate yourself in the beginning for doing it but once you start doing it and once you start getting good results, you’ll love doing it again and again.

        Also it’s important to know when to follow up and also the frequency.

        I personally would not disturb anyone for a week after following up (it also depends on whom I approach).
