Critical Blogging Decisions You Need To Make in 2018

Critical Blogging Decisions You Need To Make in 2018What are the critical blogging decisions you need to make in 2018?

You make decisions every day, whether you acknowledge them, or not.

For instance, you decide when you should get up in the morning, if you should take a wake-up walk, and what to wear for the day.

You decide what to eat.

Will it be something healthy or decadent… lol.

But then come the decisions you need to make in your blogging business.

Some of these will be ordinary, everyday decisions.

But others will be critical to the very life and success of your business..

The ones I’ve outlined below are the critical blogging decisions you will have to make.

Special: Make 2018 Your Best Blogging Year

They can’t be avoided.

Your blogging success in 2018 will depend on the decisions you make in these key areas.

I would like to focus on these areas in this article.

Critical Blogging Decisions: Time Management

You have to decide on how to manage your time.

Time management done correctly can lead to your success.

When done on a whim it can lead to frustration and even worse, failure.

You have to map out your business strategy carefully and realistically.

I’ve seen so many people decide to plan out an unrealistic business strategy.

You know, do a million things each and every day for the next 365 days.

It’s never going to happen, but you make it your plan for the year because you’re just determined to reach your goals.

That only leads to anxiety.

When making decisions about how to manage and allocate your time, you have to account for those little things like eating, resting, spending time with family and/or friends.

And you have to make sure that most of your time will be spent on those things that can help your business grow the most, and the fastest.

Critical Blogging Decisions: Investment

You need to decide on the financial investment you will be making in your business.

How much money can you spare to make your business really work?

Making a list of the many things you need to run your business is imperative.

From setting up a good working blog, to creating good social media accounts.

Many of those things will require money.

Special: Make 2018 Your Best Blogging Year

Figure out what you can spend and then prioritize.

Is it more important to spend $10 a month on an autoresponder service, or for some social media automation?

And figure out what you will avoid spending, too, since it’s easy to get caught up in spending too much for too little return.

Coaching

Then comes the most important investment of all and that is coaching.

If you want to learn the “free way” it will take tons of time.

Plus there will be no structure or order to learning something that you can actually apply to your business.

I say this with passion because I, myself, have spent plenty on coaching and mentoring.

When I first started blogging, I paid for group coaching.

This gave me the knowledge I needed to start blogging correctly.

Then there was the decision to create my first digital information product.

I can tell you I was fearful at that time because I didn’t know where to start.

There was so much information I wanted to share that I was writing in circles.

That’s when I realized it really would be far wiser to hire a knowledgeable coach to whip me into shape.

I had to concentrate on one message and one message only.

Also, I was given a precise production schedule for completing one thing at a time.

At first it was grueling.

I wasn’t used to working like that, but it was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

Nothing… and I have to repeat this… nothing… is more valuable than good coaching.

It is definitely the difference between, “giving it a try,” and “making it happen.”

How serious are you about the success of your blog in 2018?

It may be time to invest in your success instead of just wishing for it.

Critical Blogging Decisions: Operational

When it comes to business decisions, well, like I said earlier, you are already making them every day.

You decide what topic to write about for your next blog post.

The you choose images for it.

And what about spreading the word with social media posting?

Are you doing it strategically or just haphazardly?

Special: Make 2018 Your Best Blogging Year

I mean, and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you this… but I will… You can be on every stinking social media platform and get nothing in return.

That is, if you simply hang out without real purpose or design, you can absolutely drown in your time spent there.

In operating your business, the trick is to do things effectively and productively.

Not to just do them because you heard somewhere that they should be done.

A good business operation means that you test things you are doing to see what’s working and what is not.

For instance, if you are running a specific social media campaign… try it and see what is getting you the best response.

Narrow it down to 2 or maybe 3 social media platforms and decide to give it your all.

When you see something is working, then put more effort into it.

If you see it is not, then back off.

Those are the kind of operational decisions you should be making.

Critical Blogging Decisions: Intuition

Now what about your intuition?

Somewhere inside you there is a little voice telling you to do something.

Listen to it….even try it and see where it leads you.

You all have intuition and it is a powerful energy that propels your passion.

You might have a passion to be a writer, but think of a thousand excuses why you can’t be one.

Nonetheless, your intuition can push you forward in the direction of your true passion.

But you need to listen to it, and act accordingly.

Special: Make 2018 Your Best Blogging Year

Give it a try.

You may find this awkward or scary at first.

But once you start tuning in to your intuitive inner voice, you will give yourself a chance to go beyond your self-imposed limitations.

You can truly morph into someone very special.

I did a little video for you on a split second decision I had to make while traveling.

It’s not long, but it will give you a sense of how to use your intuition and logic at the same time.

Critical Blogging Decisions You Need To Make in 2018

So what are the key decisions you are facing this year, as a blogger?

I’d be interested in hearing what you are struggling to get under control, or to improve on in 2018.

Drop me a message in the comments section below.

And, of course, be sure to share this article on your social media sites 🙂

Be Blessed,

-Donna

    Oh my God!

Thanks Donna for sharing. Time management is unarguably the most pressing problem a lot of people have.

I have tried and tried but I’m only getting better at it.

I love how you highlighted them.

    Cheers.

Great post Donna! I love that you included intuition in here. It’s so important to listen to your little voice. I’ve found that whenever I don’t listen to it, that’s when I run into problems.

For me, time management is my biggest obstacle. I get focused on one thing, and then feel guilty I’m not doing something else, or it’s taking too long and so I switch gears. And that really gets me nowhere. So my goal this year is to get better at time management and project management, and build up my streams of passive income so that I can focus on creating the things I really want to create.

      Hi Ruth,

Our intuition, if listened to correctly will always lead us to the right road.

When it comes to time management and project management, it is a discipline. We cannot just decide to make it happen, we have to act upon that decision for a while until it becomes a habit. Then it is easy peasy.

      Hi Kathleen,

Yea, I stuck with my plan and I’m still moving forward on it every day.

And the many times I had challenges, I turned to the basics of my business, or coaching from someone with a specific expertise I lacked, or… my intuition that I knew would see me through.

I’ve found these to be reliable, key decisions I’ve made in building my business.

It has to be time management for me, Donna. I’d LOVE to sit all day and write content for my websites, but I just don’t have the time with everything else that I have to do. I really need to focus this year on becoming better with my time, and stop frittering it away on things that aren’t important! Thanks for the blog – food for thought!

      Hi Max,

Wouldn’t we all love to have more time?

I could sell that (if I could capture it in a bottle)… haha

But I think the biggest thing I see from people is that they just do too many things (TMT)

It’s a great goal for 2018 to find what you’re not getting good results with and just cut it out of your schedule or DMO.

I mean, what’s the worst thing that could happen if you suddenly stopped doing something that wasn’t helping your business anyway?

      Nice seeing you here 🙂

    Hi Donna,
Great post subject. Intuition is just the way you need to go. I chose to work with someone early this year because I really liked her. I dropped another because I did not. You just know if you trust your feeling. I know you know. You felt you needed to go on that plane right? lol

This year I want to operate my business effectively and productively and I know that it’s tricky.
Critical decisions. Managing my time. Getting so good at doing this. I am mapping out my business strategy carefully week by week.
Keeping track of everything on paper and online using software, Asana, and a few other things.

Watching my investments, started a coaching program. Doing my social media posting strategically. All good things for 2018.

    Hey Donna,

Just like every year, this year too will pass but what you achieve will stay with you and push you forward towards further success.

I like your suggestions about getting a mentor. As bloggers, we are hardwired to think that we can do everything ourselves but just like any other profession – taking help from people who have been there for ages is very helpful. That way, you save yourself from making mistakes and achieve more in less time.

Focusing on social media is a great idea, one needs to see which platform is giving more results and really focus on it. It is ok to have a profile everywhere just to reserve the userid but one can’t be active everwhere. That is where selection of a good platform comes into play!

    Thanks,

      Hi Shantanu,

I know marketers and bloggers struggle with the whole idea of what is the best platform for them to be on in social media, or how many of them to develop.

Well I guess the truth is that they’re all good.

You just can’t use them all.

In fact, you have to be careful about using too many of them.

Some of the best marketers I know use only one or two social media platforms consistently.

It’s just a matter of finding which one works for you.

In truth… if you get just one social media platform working for you really well – do you really need anything else?

    Donna,

Time management is always a big issue for me. After coaching with a couple of really amazing blog /money mindset guys, I realized that time management was probably my biggest fail. I get caught up in the moment and my moment of writing can last an hour or more, sometimes without any real destination. So, I’ve learned “timer skills” with a five minute timer.

As shocking as that may sound, five minutes can be a lot of time for writing. Not only does it give me time to write a good sized comment on someone else’s post – with an acute awareness of the topic. (You can really only write one topic in five minutes.) But more than anything else, it reminds me at the end of five minutes to MOVE.

Once I’ve read a blog post, I set the timer for five minutes and allow myself that long to write a comment. Once my five minutes are up, I have to walk away from the computer. My apartment is small, so sometimes I just walk into another room and back, but it means I have to move from my seat. So, I do that. WOW! What a difference it makes. I don’t hit send until I’m back and can read through the comment once.

Not only do I see it with a clear mind before I hit send – fewer typos that way – but I’ve noticed my pants are loser too. Side benefit to motion? Perhaps! And I like the five minute time frame for writing a comment. My comments appear to have so much more value.

And the first 18 days of this year have been far more valuable for my business.

Making serious changes in 2018 is a definite plus in my business.

I absolutely LOVE your blog posts! Thank you!

      Hi Jan,
Thanks for sharing that story of your time management journey.

      It’s an important one.

If anyone’s interested in exactly how this works I would tell them to look into the Pomodoro Technique.

That’s the method like you’ve described, where you break down your work sessions into tiny segments..

Segmenting your time in this way really helps you stay focused when you’re working, and gives your mind complete rest when you’re not.

It’s very rejuvenating, and a great productivity method.

    Hi Donna,

Ah yes, the intuition. It is a powerful force. Even though it is intangible it is as real as our physical senses, or, our buddies. I meditate and do yoga daily to allow the Loud Voice to speak up so I hear it and honor it, and so I can allow the little voice aka ego to stop its yapping LOL.

Great point too on setting realistic goals, along with plans that allow for growth and expansion. Many bloggers follow a ridiculous New Year’s Resolution, trying to go from struggling newbie to seasoned pro in days or weeks, always leading to burnout. Don’t take mouthful bites at once; you’ll choke to death. Little nibbles every day is the way to go. You will enjoy your meals, digest properly and energize yourself for the long haul journey that is successful blogging.

    Hi Donna,

Great tips and I totally agree with investing in your business. As you know, I had a blog in the past and failed miserably. I had no clue how to turn my blog into a business.

So when I started this blog, I invested in a blogging course that shows me how to actually treat my blog as a business. It was a pretty expensive course, but so worth it. I think it has been one of the best decisions I have made for my blog. I still have to do all the work, but at least I know what to to do to grow my blog and actually turn it into a business.

We hear it all the time, blogs don’t make money, businesses make money.

I know that it takes a lot of time to build up a blog and create a business. But at least now I know the steps. For some reason it was hard for me to understand the whole concept, I guess because I don’t come from an entrepreneurial background.

I’ve also started focusing more on the things that are actually working for me. I’m still freelancing, so I don’t get too much time to work on my business.

Investing in your blog is one of the quickest ways to overcome the hurdles. We have to understand that we can’t always do everything for free.

Thanks for taking the time to share this with us.

    Have a great day 🙂

    Hey Donna,

As always, your posts are spot on and full of value that makes me think more about the direction I’m moving in. Being the beginning of a new year, I know many of us think of new goals or aspirations for our lives and our blogs. I know a few that are giving up blogging to focus more on social media for their businesses. Is it the right move? Maybe for them.

There are times, many as of recently, that I can’t get my act together to blog. I lack the inspiration to blog about design or social media. I go in spurts on my hobby blog but still can’t find the motivation. Maybe too much happening in my life right now and I’m just enjoying it, rather than be online.

But you bring up some really valid points in this post. Ones that many need to read in hopes of helping them plan their 2018. Passing it on, gf! Hope you had a fab vacation!

    Hi Donna,

I must confess that this is the first time am reading an article about decisions we need to make in terms of business and blogging career. The list of decisions as outlined in this post are remarkably important and are crucial to the success of any business.

Time management for example will not only help you get things done accordingly, but will help you focus on what’s important, and when you’re focused it enables you to be productive. It will also help you create trust and credibility with your audience and prospective customers.

Furthermore, a lot of people have a misconception when it comes to building your blogging career from ground up, or setup your WordPress website for free, so to speak.

As you pointed out, you must invest in these ventures before you can success.

Great topic Donna! I’ve made two critical decisions related to blogging for this year. First, I’m going to hire a professional to do some work on the structure of my blog to improve performance and speed. Then, and this is a biggie, I’m going to hire a virtual assistant. I’ve toyed with the idea for a couple of years but when I finally sat down and balanced what I could be spending my time on if I weren’t trying to do it all myself, it just made so much sense. Thanks for the inspiration!

It will take time, but time well spent. So when Wednesday rolls around, you have the choice of pressing publish or write a new blog.

Hi Donna, oh yes I’m working on this as we speak! I am looking at changing my email distribution from MailChimp possibly. I loved the push notifications and what they have done as far as traffic generation but are they taking away from email subscribers? More to come as I research that one.
I also am looking at the time spent on Facebook with their upcoming changes. Do I spend time on video or less time on Facebook altogether? Do I join groups or start one?
I have spent more money this past year on tools to help me save time. Tailwind, Buffer, Triberr, Missing Lettr, Canva to name a few. It’s a fine line between making and spending money but you need to invest in order to make it! Coaching is another area I’m looking at once again this year.
I think anything that can save me time is key! I so agree with you on making decisions, I always say just do it, make a decision. Procrastination is a decision NOT to do something.
I hope you are enjoying the snow free days we have had around here. Thanks for another great video too. Have a great day Donna!

      Hi Lisa,

Too much thought (procrastination) and too much research can be a killer to a project. Have to separate what is working and what is not.
As for Facebook, they are always changing but personally it works amazing for me as long as I keep up with the changes. Joining groups depends on what you are looking for. I only have one group I’m active in the others I just cannot keep up.
FB Live has brought me so much traffic and now I’m in the middle of product creation about that and more…. That decision I made last year and I have to keep on top of it to finish in time at the end of this month. Phew…..

Donna, this is such great advice. I have set up brainstorming ideas on paper for my blog. I am one to promo the day I post but I fall short afterwards. I should really set up automated social media blog promotions. (I’m writing that down now as one of my goals) I find it is overwhelming to keep up with all the platforms and be present everywhere. Intuition is huge and I’m so glad you mentioned that. Trusting our instincts on our blogs and websites is also important as it is when traveling. Great little video, Donna! So glad you got away before the storm hit hard. Traveling is a great way to test our instincts and on my recent trip to Australia, I was on my own some of the time. I was pleased with my decisions and the trip was a success. I now have to apply that confidence to my blog LOL. Stay warm!! Thanks for the inspirational post.

      Hi Lisa,

I had to mention intuition because it is a strong part of decision making. We can use our logic but need always to listen to our “gut feeling” when doing just about anything.

When it comes to blogging, there are so many decisions to be made from content to social media sharing. Although we cannot be everywhere, we need to pick the places we get the most response from. Narrow it down and be there all the time. Two is my magic number and it works well after I played around with all social media platforms.

It is great to know you had a wonderful trip to Australia! Apply that confidence to your blog and it will grow in leaps and bounds.

    Informative article Donna Mam.

I was also one of them who randomly post on social media. Then I come to know about the strategy to generate leads from social media.

However I am not good in time managing. I have to focus on that. Any tips for this .

      Hi Bitu,

      Welcome to my blog.

When it comes to time management, it is the core of our business success. I would suggest you take a piece of paper and write down all the things you need to do business wise. Then on a separate column write those every day tasks you have to take….The more you write the more clear it will become to you that you have many things to do in one day.

Now break down tasks realistically and write them down for the day. Put a little check mark next to them when you are done. It can be the most menial task as washing a dish. Those checks will reinforce you. It will take a bit of practice but once you start it will become a good habit.

Of course there are long range goals and responsibilities you need to do. You can also write them down and work backwards to your daily tasks.

      Hope this helps,

    Hey Donna,

How is Cold there. Hope you enjoy the winter. You are absolutely right, 2018 is here and we bloggers have to make critical decisions for our blogging career. For the sake of our blog growth, I do have created some blogging goals for 2018 which I have shared on my blog. Investment is a big problem for newbie bloggers. They hesitate to invest. But in reality to grow your blog you need to invest the same thing that a businessman do when he starts a business. Finding right blogging tools is very important to become a successful blogger in 2018. Thanks for sharing these great tips and insights.

    Have a Great day 🙂

      Hi Vishwajeet,

It is a very cold winter this year but as long as I’m prepared, I’m OK with it.

We all have to make those blogging decisions and with so many changes 2018 needs to be the year of change. I know that newbie bloggers have a hard time investing. And yes, your analogy of a businessman is so true. I had an offline business for so many years and the first two years were ones of investment. The business prospered because of that and the same is true with our online business.
