Develop Your Power – Part 3

People often fail to realize that to develop your power, you must make it a habit to exercise responsibility.

They spend great amounts of energy trying to avoid responsibility for so many things: their health, their mindset, their situations at work, home or relationships. And as a life coach, I see far too many people fail to take responsibility for their success.

Avoiding to take responsibility may seem to be the “easy way out,” but in the process, you surrender the very core of your person. Don’t give your power away. Make it your mission to take charge of your mindset, your success and your life. That’s what this Develop Your Power series has been all about.

Please share this post with those who may benefit within your social media streams.

I’d also love to have you comment below with your own stories and thoughts about your understanding of how, in your own life, you have come to develop your power by taking responsibility.

This is so true, Donna! If you choose not to take responsibility, you disappoint yourself the most. You keep making excuses and then those turn into opportunities failed.

    Thank you for sharing this!!!

Yes Nile, I see so many people disappointed in themselves and making excuses, doing the blame game etc. When you start to have the mindset of taking responsibility, life is easier.

Terrific message Donna! We are not only responsible, we are accountable – to ourselves and others. As you’ve done such a marvelous job of pointing out, we have the power to create the life we really want for ourselves. One of my favorite says is “time is a one way ticket …” Wow! That’s not only true, it conjures up a great visual, huh? Thanks for the wonderful post.

    Donna,

Great video. I am enjoying the series and your real, and down-to-earth style. You mentioned at the beginning and again at the end about how you and how we react to things. Many people can be all nice and good when things are going well. They talk a great game. When the chips are down, all these enlightened leaders are anything but. It is hard to control our reactions in all circumstances, but like you said, it is something that we must take responsibility for and peace and equanimity are definitely things that we should all be striving for especially when someone says or does something that would normally get us, or any normal human being upset.

    Great video!

That’s right Jim! Being aware of our responsibilities, helps us respond in a more peaceful way when we practice how to do it. When things “get to me” I reply “give me a moment.” That usually stops the conversation dead on and then I have that moment to calm down and turn it around.

Thanks for the great inspirational vid! I think that in the first place, each person should dig within himself and find the “qualities” in his character that let him “slip away”. After this recognition, the way to have better control on your own personal business is very short.

    Cheers!

Thanks for visiting John! Yes, we all have to dig down into ourselves. It is an on going process. We change and we have to dig down to know those changes. As we grow, our “qualities” grow also. And Yes, when we recognize this, we do have better control with ourselves.

Thanks Again Donna for such a wonderful post. We should not give away our responsibilities but share part is good when mentoring someone. The processof duplication is success in many ways. I have always taken responsibility for my own actions both in business and in life. I look forward to your continued posts, it is always a pleasure coming to your blog.

I see so many people not being responsible for themselves, how can you expect them to take any responsibilities for something or someone else? I love how you are sharing your wisdom, it all makes sense when hearing them from your mouth! 🙂

Very well expressed Donna! During the initial stages of my marriage, my wife was a bit reluctant to take up responsibility towards my family, my parents and my other family members. With time, she realized that she cannot function independently. Thus, she realized of her responsibilities and we are now very happy with her new attitude.

      Hi Steve,
Great and thanks for sharing that. When we take responsibility, especially in our relationships, it may take a while, but it is worth it. I have a Blended Family…i.e. My husband’s ex-wife and children, and my ex-husband and child. Put them all together and blend it up with love, and you have one great family.
It was back then that I learned the responsibility of family.

Power is about being responsible for one self and centered, Donna yes!
Responsibility means knowing to respond ( abilitiy to respond to ourselves 1st, the relationships with our loved ones and our businesses.
Walking our talk is alos about responsibility.
I like the idea of writing down the list of our responsibilities this is a great way to prepare our days ( time management) and knowing our values (what is important to us).
Thank you your videos are great!

      Thanks Patricia,
Yes I always find that writing things down is a great Time Management tool and looking at our list shows us what really is important.

I haven’t set up a business, but in my personal life, I’ve always believed in taking responsibility. I had a tough upbringing with a lot of physical and mental abuse.
Blaming my upbringing was never a choice for me. I took action and took the power for how my own life turned out. It’s possible to rise above anything.

Anne, this is why I made this video. It pertains to all, not only to business. The mindset of a person is so important. I feel that business is secondary to what this message is all about. It is about the inside of us and our struggles and challenges in life.
I have also been a”victim” of abuse, born into it, married it, and then have overcome it. Once we achieve that power within ourselves and overcome it, we are warriors. There is absolutely nothing we cannot accomplish.
      Thanks for sharing Ann!

  10. Coach James December 9, 2011 at 8:52 pm #

    Hey Donna,

Listening to your video got me thinking a little on this subject…

The one thing that a person shouldn’t give away is their ultimate responsibility, because it is the root of any authority that you have-which is also the power of potential influence.

So, If you give someone else the power of responsibility for you, then you will never have the ability to help others, rise to leadership, or create a life that you desire.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Best,
    James

    • Donna Merrill December 10, 2011 at 6:58 pm #

James you are absolutely correct. We are responsible for every thought and action in our lives. I’ve seen people giving it away by doing the blame game, telling themselves they don’t know how, etc. EXCUSES!!!
Once you become responsible for yourself, it is the first step in leading your own life and success.

  11. Oliver Tausend December 8, 2011 at 1:36 pm #

    Hi Donna,

I like the way you discriminate between responsibility for things and responsibility for oneself. You are also right on with the distinction between being in control of others and being in control of oneself.

It seems to be easier trying to control others (people and circumstances) than really controlling the only person we are truly in charge of. It’s a very well disguised excuse not to deal with oneself and not to take that good look into the mirror.

It’s all bout being able to respond (responsibility) rather than just reacting to circumstances and people the way we were conditioned.

    Thanks for sharing your insights.

    Be blessed

    Oliver

    • Donna Merrill December 9, 2011 at 7:02 pm #

      Thanks Oliver,
Yes it is all about control over ourSELF, rather than others. I find that so many people spend so much time trying to be in control of others in many ways that it puts them into a standstill.
Also, circumstances will arrive where you want to “react” and sometimes that could lead you down a dark trail. However, if you take a moment, a deep breath, and use your mindset correctly, you will discover what is important to YOU and then communicate it.
      Thanks for stopping by

    Dear Donna,

Love this message! I absolutely agree! Learning to self reflect enough to be driven to take personal responsibility for all that we do and have is such a huge factor in our overall success quotient.

It’s the difference between living a life of nothing but reactions to circumstance and a life of empowerment!

    Thanks for this!!
