Partner, Pal and Product

This post was most recently updated on March 26th, 2014

David Merrill PartnerThis past year David Merrill  (my husband)  and I have been aggressively working on our new product and marketing funnel.  Now, for those of you who don’t know David, you can find him at DavidMerrill101.com.

So I want to take some time to let all of you know how we can be both partners and pals… true pals!

The first word that comes to mind is respect.  David and I respect each others’ expertise.

Now, if you are a regular reader of my blog, you already know me.

I’m passionate about helping folks use blogging strategies to craft their personal brands.  I regularly help new bloggers to fine tune their vision, their passion and their goals.  We then work on getting their blogs up and running and putting strategies in place that will help them become successful bloggers.

But you may not know what David does.

He is not so outgoing as I am.   So while I’m building relationships on Social Media sites, David works on the marketing part of our business.  He understands things like marketing techniques and building sales funnels.  He’s not an IT guy, by any stretch of the imagination.  But, he is very technical compared to me!

With a M.A. in World Religions and Psychology, plus an M.Ed. in Communications from Columbia University, I think his greatest asset is that he really knows how to teach!  He’s especially good at making complex things seem perfectly simple.

You see, David’s very good at things I know only a little about, while I excel in areas where he is uneasy and has little experience.  So, in other words, we bounce off each other pretty nicely.  Where my abilities drop off, he picks me up.  Where he doesn’t know which way to turn, I light the way.

This is why I think we are perfect partners, not only in life, but in business, too.

We are a husband and wife team that work together CONSTANTLY.

Partner, Pal and Product

Over the last few months, we created a product about blogging that is geared especially to those who are just coming into the blogging world for the first time.  It was a passion of mine to help those newbies to get their blogs up and running, fine tune the strategies they need to put into place, and to become successful bloggers.

Creating a product is a lot of work, of course.  But working as a team has been a lot of fun, and we both learned a lot from each other.

As of this writing, we are busy tweaking the final product and setting up our membership site.

Making a product is one thing.  But then comes all the rest….the sales funnel, the delivery mechanism, and the marketing approach.

I concentrated on the content portion of the product, while David concentrated on the publishing and marketing portion of the project.

So, I just wanted to give him a shout out because I never do!  But it is well deserved because if it wasn’t for him, I don’t know how I would ever get this all together.  Of course, he insists that without me, there never would have been a product to put together.

Now you see what I mean when I say we are perfect partners.

Blessings,

-Donna

Hi Donna. How wonderful that you and your husband mesh so well that you can work your business together! My husband and I don’t do that, but I feel very lucky that we are able to support each other in our separate endeavors. He never complains when I spend hours locked in my office, and I support him in his passion, which is his involvement as a volunteer with a local U.S. Naval Sea Cadet unit. He was just made commander of the unit, so it should be a wild ride for this next year.

Keep on being such great role models!

    All the best,

    Hi Donna,

That’s awesome that you and your husband are able to work together and your skills compliment each other.

I think it’s great that you focus on building the relationships, while he focuses on the marketing.

Combining both of your skills will definitely help you get further than if you both had the same skills. The best part is that you both realize how much work internet marketing is and no one will nag you when you’re spending too much time online.

I am sure that your new product will do well. I have no doubt that with both of you working together it will be a huge success.

    Have a great day.

    Hi Donna,

What a great example of a husband and wife teaming together in business! Where one is ‘weak’ in a certain area, the other is ‘strong’in that area.

I don’t think that most people would really want to work closely with their spouse, family or close friends because they somehow have the opinion that the business and personal should always be kept separate.

Merry Christmas and I wish you all the best on your upcoming product launch!

    Hi Donna,

Thank you for telling us about Mr. Merrill. M.A. in in World Religions and Psychology? This came as a great surprise. I always thought his expertise must be in the economy or something like that.

You are not just complementary but also similar in many respects. This is rather unusual and probably the explanation for such a good team.

Nice slippers … . 🙂 Never thought of this … . Maybe it is time for me to buy a nice pair of slippers and make a photo session with my wife.

Do you think blue is ok for a man ? What about a woman? Maybe red or pink or orange. 🙂

What can you tell us about the membership site you are working on? I know the product is in the blogging field. What about the membership site? What kind of education and teaching will you provide?

    Have a wonderful weekend

As for our Membership Site, to put it in a nutshell, it will be more of a support site whereby people join in and they will be a a continual place to learn various techniques about blogging, social media and marketing.

We will be doing weekly webinars and have a place where people can ask questions and we can answer them. That’s the nutshell of it!

    Hey Donna,

Thanks for introducing us to David!

I do have to say that you two are lucky to have found each other and build a business together with this type of harmony. Well I don’t know if lucky is a good word… maybe I should say it was destiny. Well, either way it goes, you two found each other and work quite well.

It’s great to see a married couple who can actually work together to build a business. You don’t hear this quite often. Usually you hear that one spouse is going for their dreams and building their home business, while the other one isn’t so supportive. I tell you, if this was a musical performance, you two would be the perfect dance partners!

    Thanks for sharing Donna!

      Hi Sherman,

Yes it is usual that married couples are not harmonious when it comes to doing business on line.

I’ve met so many people that have even left the business they were building because the other spouse had no understand of how this all works.

Blessed, Destiny? I don’t know what to call it. But since we have been together we have been Entrepreneurs off line and now on line.

      Hi Gladys,

Oh thanks so much for this comment. It means so much to me. I like what you said about the picture of our feet.

I know so many people that struggle with their other half when it comes to their on line business.

It’s not for everyone, but those who pursue it know that it does take time. Sometimes their partners get impatient and don’t have the full understanding of how it all works.

This causes an imbalance in their relationship. And even worse, some have to quit.

I just hope this encourages people that there are some of us here that do work together.

I will let you know when the product is live. Shooting for the first week of January when all the hustle bustle is over.

Thanks for sharing David (Hi David!) 🙂

I am really jealous of this. During my younger days, I have pal like this. One pal to be exact. We are sooooo close that we talk about everything. Even our partners do not know everything we do!

As time passes by, we tend to drift apart and what’s worst, we ended up on different states. Well, we are still close but just not that close as last time.

    Old times!

      Hi Reginald,

That is so sad my friend. I know the pain. I had something like that happen to me years ago. I partnered before the internet days with a “pal” on a book I wrote.

She took it to a major company and they just stole it from me. But I’m a great believer in Karma. Although it was a bit heart breaking, this person could never look me in the eye again.

So I wrote another book and self published it. Made enough of money to open up my first store. There ya go!

I was always an entrepreneur and my other husbands made it difficult. Even though one of them had his own business, he wasn’t business savvy. When I would suggest something, his male ego got in the way.

    Hi Donna,
That is so awesome that y’all work so well together. I may need to ask you for advice on how to make my blog more known because I am a major newb when it comes to blogging. I have been blogging and syndicating for about 4 weeks now, but I am still not sure that my content is all that great. To me it seems like something great, but to others it may seem like a piddly little write. I don’t really use pictures, or any visual helps with my writing because I believe that the images I could produce wouldn’t be enough to suffice for what the human mind can create. I like to help people visualize what I mean with words and figures rather than with pictures. I used some pictures in my Thanksgiving article, but they weren’t necessarily my pictures.
    Thanks for the read.

      Hi Ashton,

As a newbie, it does take some time to get into the “groove” I would have to say that

      1. Write content to people. Something that is relevant to your niche.

    Hi Donna,

Wow, I’ve almost missed this one 🙂

Well, I had the privilege of meeting your husband David a while back, and the first things that come out of him is that he’s very smart and sweet.

I think that’s great that you two complement each other so well because that’s great for your online business. I think you’ve probably one of the best relationships around, because you’re not only partner in life but even at work.

I’m sure that those who didn’t know David would be glad to get to know him.

Donna, I love this post! It is so nice to hear that it is possible for spouses to work together and still have a great relationship. My hubby and I don’t currently do this but have been talking about doing so in the next phase of our life. We would love to live in Hawaii and create something together…

Looking forward to seeing your product! Kudos to the both of you.

      Hi Kathy,

David and I have been working together for decades. We had run a few businesses before we got on to the internet.

Internet marketing is his specialty. We teach each other every day, usually in the morning while we are having our coffee.

We do make a great team and we never run out of things to talk about. Strategies are our main point of conversation.

It sounds like a winning combination to me and I am sure that, with your joint knowledge and experience, your new product will be a success. I help new bloggers when I can but do not have time to train them completely. I look forward to being able to recommend that they can learn using your program.

My hubby and I work together too at our side by side desks. Two geeks together 🙂 He has not wanted to venture online with business but we do have joint clients – he building and fixing their PC’s and me building their web sites, managing their social networking and blogs.

Yes, I work with new bloggers all the time, so I just had to put together a product to round them all up. It will be followed by one on one consultations, and ongoing webinars.

You and your husband seem like a great team! The best thing is we work when we want and have that freedom!

Congratulations on your partnership and product – it’s not easy to work as a husband/wife team – there are lots of marriages that couldn’t handle that much “togetherness” Sound like you two have really worked out the kinks and have come up with something where 1+1 =3 because of your synergy .

      Hi Marty,

Actually since I met David we both had that entrepreneurial spirit! He was doing writing at the time I met him. I was doing my coaching business. Over the years, we bought and sold real estate, dabbled in antiques, and then came the internet.

We always worked well together. We get excited about a project, he does his part and I do mine because we recognize our strengths and weaknesses. You know Mary, we never had a fight in our lives. So far lol.

Great that you two can work together so well.

I started on the net back in 1998 and my wife has helped a great deal, she does to this day. The whole internet marketing business is not really her thing, so she’s happy to do the mundane tasks. I am lucky to have her assistance.

Many people are surprised we can be home together 24/7 and get along so well. As others have mentioned, it’s not for every one and doesn’t work for every one. It’s not happy every day, we have our days, but for the most part, it works for us.

Hi Ron and welcome to my blog.

It is so great to meet someone that works from home together with their spouse.

I’ve been doing work with David since I met him. Actually that is how we met. I was transcribing a book that he was publishing. I was furious because he was taking all the best things out of the book and made it look too cheesy.

When I met him I asked him why. He then explained to me the miracle of marketing. Back then it was all mail order and now here we are together doing what we love to do best…..

What a great idea! There a many husband and wife teams that do work together. But in my experience with clients of mine one spouse gets impatient when the other is building their own business.

It does cause stress and conflict. I just made a note of that because this is all about not giving up.

Sounds like a great partnership Donna, but then since I’m familiar with both of your blogs I’m not at all surprised. I’ve learned so much from both of you! I know the service and programs you are providing are certainly needed – far too many new bloggers dive in not realizing all that it takes to succeed and end up getting discouraged.

      Hi Marty,

Yes, that is our “why” because too many people get discouraged thinking that blogging is a get rich quick idea.

As you and I well know it is a means to an end and it does take time. For those who have a passion for their own business and patience to build it up, this will be for them.

Donna, it must be nice to have someone with the goals of completing a project in mind.

You do not find many people who can recognize their weakness and invite your strengths.

When someone is willing to do that; a winning combination has to emerge.

I am glad you are mentioning your husband because he is I am sure responsible for so many things.

I wanted to introduce David to my readers that don’t know him. You won’t find him on the social sites, but can always find him on his computer lol.

He even dragged me down to Washington D.C. when he had a 4 day intensive training with Daegan Smith. I stood in the hotel while he spent many hours per day working with him. I just wish it wasn’t so hot when we were down there.

However, I used that time for catching up on tons of writing.

    Hey Donna,

First off, congratulations on your product dear 🙂 You mentioned how busy you were with doing videos and all that. But when you see the final product, it’s just exhilarating. Isn’t it?

Eventhough I haven’t been to David’s blog much, I’m huge fan of the videos of you both done together 😉 Hope more will come in future too.

I know when you say you both are perfect partners Donna. I don’t know too much about your personal lives, but what I’ve seen and read about you two always drew the image of perfect partners. Indeed wonderful example for everyone!

It reminds me of the last guest post that David did here. He knows his stuff very well and how to lay things out properly too. He’s a man with few words as I know, but expert in his stuff.

You both have a lovely weekend there! I know, it’s gonna busy though 😀 lol…

    Cheers…

      Hi Mayura,

Yes David is a man of few words. I’m the big mouth of the two. But we do work well together. I am blessed that we can live our lives as entrepreneurs and be together all the time.

Working on this project has been exciting! We had hired a production coach for the product itself and it was done, re-done, and done again until all flowed. There were schedules to meet that I thought were impossible, but just like anything else, when you focus and put your mind on it, somehow it becomes easier.

Then came the marketing one-to-one coaching. Again, tear this down, re-do that. Again, again Phew. But the final part now is to make sure the server holds up everything. Plus everything connects properly.

All and all it has been a fantastic time.

      Thanks for coming by!

    Hi Donna,

It’s indeed wonderful to know about David 🙂

Yes, you both are true partners, pals, and true life partners too if I may add. Your hubby sure is doing so well for himself and why not, with a person like you by his side.

He’s a lot like my hubby who also manages to much of my admin and the tech aspect of the blog, and whenever there is any problem, I always head to him and he has a solution. So, we are forever working on things together too and how we can better the blog. It’s always a combined effort I would say and always a team partnership that works well. I’m trying to get him more into my blog, perhaps he just might do that too one fine day.

Thanks for sharing more of David with us Donna, and I wish both of you every success for your new blogging product. Can’t wait to hear more about it. Happy weekend (Love the picture with your feet up!)

For me, I don’t know how we would ever get things done without bouncing off one another.
