Bloggers and online entrepreneurs need to get some “awesome authority” for themselves. That’s how they can jump the line of all those who are patiently waiting to establish some kind of ordinary, same-old authority that nobody cares about.
Here’s the difference.
When you gain recognition as an authority… that milestone that folks labor and struggle for months and years to achieve, you might get some people who view you as an expert. That’s cool. Everybody wants somebody to think they’re an expert at something. It makes them feel good about themselves, they can show it off in Facebook groups and maybe even write an ebook about it.
People think you’ve got “awesome authority,” when you’ve successfully convinced them that they can finally accomplish that thing they’ve trying to do for so long.
You see, authority is all about you.
It’s about
- how good you are at something,
- how much you know,
- how much more you know that other leaders in your field, and mostly
- how much success you’ve had doing that thing you’re so smart about.
Awesome authority is about
- how much trust you’ve earned,
- how much desire you’ve instilled for whatever you service or offer is, and mostly
- how much confidence you’ve built up in your followers… confidence that they can finally accomplish that thing you’re helping them with.
Authority is all about you.
Awesome authority is all about your readers, fans, followers, subscribers… those who trust you because you’ve given them unshakeable confidence, not in you, but in themselves.
Create Awesome Authority
Here’s your action plan. Follow it, and you’re sure to create awesome authority.
Know what Critical Problem your target audience needs to overcome.
If you don’t know it, find it out. Know why it’s so important, why it’s such a common stumbling block and what the big steps are to overcoming it.
This shows your students that you know who they are, you know their needs and desires, you’ve been there, too, and you completely empathize with them.
Assure them they will overcome this Critical Problem if they can achieve a set goal.
Assure them, further, that when they follow a list of tasks you’ve outlined for them, they will achieve that goal.
Outline the the 3, 5, 7 or however many tasks they need to accomplish in order to achieve their end-desire.
Make sure these are short, punchy tasks that can get done quickly when you know how.
Create a tutorial for each task.
Make sure your students can complete each of the tasks before they complete the tutorial.
As they accomplish each task, their confidence will build.
By the end of the tutorials, your students will have overcome what they once thought was an almost insurmountable Critical Problem. They will infer from that experience, that they can overcome all obstacles, and achieve their goals.
Special: My Free Gift To You! I Show You How To Build An Amazing Email List
Review How Your Awesome Authority Developed
When you told your students, prospects, followers… that you knew their Critical Problem, they started to trust you.
Once you are trusted, you are positioned to be an authority.
When you showed them how to overcome that problem, you convinced them that you were an authority.
Side Note: This is the level of “authority” that most online entrepreneurs are on that long line for.
When you made sure that your students accomplished the tasks you set for them, they no longer needed to trust you. Now, they had the confidence to trust themselves. Perhaps for the first time, they realized that THEY could achieve their goals. They realized it was unimportant whether or not you had reached yours, or whether or not you knew more than anyone else on Planet Z about your niche. This is where you jump the line and achieve Awesome Authority.
Everyone likes to know somebody who knows more than they do about something that is important to them… especially if it’s Critical.
These same people will not only like you, though. They will follow you to the ends of the earth… even onto your Facebook Page, lol… when you’ve demonstrated them, not that You can accomplish something. You’ve demonstrated to them that they can accomplish it, and in fact, they’ve already begun doing it.
You’ve demonstrated you can help them because you just… helped them. (This is a not so little concept I learned from Frank Kern).
You’ve helped them accomplish a set of tasks to overcome a Critical Problem.
Much more, though, you’ve helped them to trust themselves.
Now you’ve shown them they don’t really need you at all. They can trust themselves.
This self trust, strangely, automatically neuro-links to an “internal trust” in You. (“External trust” is when you bat your head against the wall trying to convince them they can trust you).
Now you’ve achieved undeniable, eternal, Awesome Authority.
And all it required was for you to stop telling folks you could help them, and just do it.
Next step, show your students, fans and followers how to be responsive to their “internal trust” in you, in order to achieve even more benefits for themselves. In other words, convert them into long-term, loyal customers.
This is one of the key benefits to you, for having taken the step required to create your awesome authority.
I look forward to your comments and opinions. What do You think?
Blessings,
-Donna

Hey Donna, you are so impressive with insight on this subject!
I feel a common understanding on being a supportive person. One who seeks daily people who are facing challenges. Once we walk them through simple milestones to achieve their end results. The better they do gain confidence. We edify them through each milestone.
You outlined great steps and must of your readers are going to take notice. Then, we encourage focused execution of activity. This is the simple way to get through those huge challenges we all have daily.
Donna, I believe you out did yourself on this one! Thank you for being in my life and love your ability to simplify things. I need this most in my life. Keep it coming.

Hell Donna maam, glad to read a great post over here. I think the site design is changed a bit due to your new hosting and this newer one looks better.
Yes authority is a term that every blogger longs for and this would make a difference in his life. Even I long for this term to be associated with my name.
Well as for now I am glad I have come across blogs and bloggers that are an authoritative figure in some or the other field. Even maam you are also an authority that passes n some knowledge to us and a trust that if we follow your tips on the topic may it be marketing or social media, we are gonna succeed.
Thanks for writing this motivating post. 🙂

Yes trust is a massive part and I also believe that leadership is as well. Showing qualities of a great leader, like inspiring, empowering, leading and progressing the people who follow you will also lead to greater authority and more respect.
This is something I am working on…Great post, thanks for the inspiration 🙂

Hi Sean,
Awesome Authority takes some time to get to! It is building trust with those you are connected to on your blog and social media.
Patience is the key when you are working towards this goal. But the “secret sauce” is giving. The more you give to others via information on your blog, on social media, and promoting others, the more the return.
To your success!

Hi Donna,
Were you ever a teacher, by any chance? Because you do an outstanding job of teaching here on your blog!
Some of your advice sounds like something writers are often told — “Show, don’t tell, your readers!” This refers to showing that someone is angry, or that it’s cold outside, by what your characters say and do. And this is so true in leadership as well. Show them how and why they can trust you, without ever telling them so. Let them see it for themselves, and they will naturally trust you.

Hi Willena,
No, I was never a teacher lol! But this is what I learned along the way and wanted to share it with my readers.
Yes, it’s a good way to teach by showing people they can do it themselves….giving them the confidence they need. Each person is unique, and has different blocks that must be acknowledged and then worked on to break down and go forward.
Once we can do that together, trust will build.
Thanks for visiting,

You have truly defined awesome authority in a way that I can understand and implement. It motivates me to know that if I implement these steps consistently I can be know as an authoriity in my niche. You point out lots of useful things being an expert is about. Once you can listen to others, share their vision. Then, walk them through clarity and focus on the things to make a great result. You give them the motivation to execute activities moving them closer to their vision. I love your approach and will take it under advisement.

That was Awesome Donna!
I love the way you just took a bunch of stuff about authority and placed it into an article defining exactly it… and the absolute difference to be an awesome authority.
The awesomeness comes from seeing someone empowered and confident because of your tutorials so they believe in themselves.. and interestingly you become the awesome authority!
But that is the hub of coaching … to teach others the skills, and – often harder – the belief that they can do it..
and you reveal the path to awesome authorityness right here 🙂
A brilliant post Donna, you are indeed an Awesome Authority <3

However, If I see someone that is walking the walk, then I will give it a peek. I usually purchase things from people I know like and trust.
As for us, we need to keep a close eye on our followers. See what is lacking and blog about it, not mentioning their names of course lol. That’s how I get some of my ideas.

Hi Donna,
It’s my first time to your site. I’m coming over from Enstine Muki’s site.
I have to be honest and tell you that I don’t even know where to start. Your article left validated everything I teach, believe and shoot for.
I believe the first step to creating awesome authority is competency. You have to be competent in your area of “Expertise”. I run into a lot of people who want to be experts, but they aren’t competent in anything.
For example, I see people who are trying to start social media businesses but they have no followers, no engagement, no valuable posts, no shares, no blog articles or comments.
Really? And you want me to trust you with my business? I don’t think so…
With that in mind, I work with many business owners and challenge them to define the “real” problems they solve. 99.9% of the time they tell me what they do. Who cares, that makes it all about you.
As you said, it’s not about me, it’s about them. When you talk to their problems and needs you show them you understand. The next step is define who you solve the problem for and once you do that you can figure out how your products or services are part of the solution.
It’s not hard in theory until you do the work.
Again, your article was fantastic and it has me thinking. Can you tell?
I look forward to reading more of your work. I wish I had seen your article sooner to include in my Saturday Review series. Definitely next week!!!!
Hope you have a great weekend!

Hey Donna,
This is a nice step by step post about creating awesome authority.
You figure out what your target audience problem is, assure that they will overcome their problems, create task for them to overcome their problems, make a tutorial for each task and then they have confidence in themselves when they do each task overcoming the problems.
Now if this isn’t what awesome authority is, then I don’t know what is. This makes a lot of sense, and gives the term ‘servant leader’ much juice when it comes to this.
It’s all about developing the leader within your target audience, right? When they feel this confidence you help to instill in them, then as you said, they will want to follow you where ever you go.
Thanks for the valuable share! I’ve been really loving your post lately! Have a great rest of the week and weekend!

Hey Donna,
I love that term, Awesome Authority! Oh girl, good one you’ve come up with and I can see why too.
Well you are definitely spot on with this topic. People want to learn from those that they trust. If those people can help them learn by taking them through some easy steps then of course they are going to appreciate the heck out of that.
Then when they start to implement what they’ve just learned and start achieving some great results they will soon realize what it means to be an authority as well. Does that mean they know everything? Well I don’t think anyone ever really does myself but I bet that just drives them in the direction to continue to learn more so they to in turn can help those that are now looking up to them.
We all know that the ones we learn these things from are the ones we’re going to trust the most that they’ll continue teaching us and helping us along the way. I mean those are the best kinds of people to be aligned with and I know you agree.
I use to be so surprised when people would tell me that I was an authority figure in their eyes but it really is as simple as learning something, taking action, get the results and then help the people who need it the most and teach them how to have the same type of results. They too can then become an authority figure to the ones that are now learning from them. What an “awesome process” which of course you probably got the term Awesome Authority. Love it Donna.
Great share my friend and thank you for writing about this. I have no doubt you’re helping a lot of people now see how this all works and that they too can achieve the same things.
Have a great rest of your week my friend.

Hi Donna
Without authority it is so difficult to make people believe in you. Ultimately a blogger has to sell and for this he must have trust of his would-be buyers.
Selling offline is not so challenging because buyer has the option to fully check the product, get as much details as possible and even can return it if that product does not offer the promised benefits.
On the contrary in online world once a buyer buys a product now he has to use it or keep with him if it does not work. Maximum he can complain of its low quality. That is why online selling is very difficult as compare to offline selling.
Once a blogger develops his authority in a field he simply has to showcase a product and his audience very happily buys its. It shows the importance of authority in online marketing.
Thanks a lot Donna for sharing another wonderful post with a lot of value for online marketers.

I love that people are saying they never new this term. I guess I know you well enough to know it is a Donna term. Well done.
Seriously I love the term and I love the post. Some people are willing to act like they are authorities long before they actually are and somehow we know they are not. Other people who are authorities never stand on the stage of being just that.
Having worked with many people who do teach from stage and have been best selling authors they have all exuded authority. Some more awesomely than others.

If you are doing it for the right reasons out of a genuine desire to help people then you can achieve that awesome authority. I have heard from many people that I inspire them because I am a blind person doing a lot of things online that many of them aren’t doing or haven’t started doing yet. Great insights Donna,
The other day, one of my blog readers who is on my list but not a blogger yet, sent me an email as a reply to my auto-email promoting my blog post and said to me “Am I not important enough that you’re not answering my question?”
I said, oh, what question? I’ve never got a question from you? She said that she posted it on my blog, so I said , Ah, do you have an avatar? She said no, so I told her that if she didn’t have an avatar her comment wouldn’t even go trough anymore on my blog.
And then, I assured her that if she sent me her question I would certainly give her the best help I could.
She did, and I gave her a fat response to her question and she was so glad.
The answer I gave her was nothing new or extraordinary for us, but I realized how it could be for someone who knows nothing about this stuff. Also, I was able to calm her down and show her that the only reason I had not replied to her was because I had never gotten that message.
So, all this to say that being an expert doesn’t take much at all. It’s just as you said, explaining things step by step and helping people along the way, until the newbie can do it on his or her own.
Great share :0

It’s a good thing she reached out to you so you could help her. Another thing I found out is that some people read our blogs but never comment.
It happened to me several times that a person would email me telling me that they enjoy reading my blog. I ask them why don’t you comment? They then say they feel intimidated. So I take some time with them to explain that it’s OK.
Yes, as long as we are explaining things step by step and not overwhelming people with too much information, this is how they grow.

Donna- I think the most important thing for me is creating trust. I am starting to see more followers and I think it is because of trust. I also don’t blog about what I see so many sites repeating one another.
For me what sets you apart is your support of others. You are someone others want to align with. So I think authority is important but that trust for me goes such a long way. You have taught us skills to believe in ourselves. You also practice what you preach which I think is awesome.
Hi Arleen,
Many thanks for your kind words. Yes indeed, it all comes down to trust. I have seen your blog growing and it’s the trust factor.

Truly awesome post Donna!
It’s obvious if or once we achieve “Authority” in the eyes of our extremely valuable customers and clients, our real destination is to get to “Awesome Authority” status asap!
But in order to accomplish that, it’s critical that we develop the skills that help
our customers learn how to trust and believe in themselves!
Obviously that is an entirely deeper level of accomplishment and interaction. But it is extremely worth of no only pursuing, but tirelessly working to accomplish that status as well!
Because without a doubt, “Awesome Authority” status, trumps plain old Authority any and every way imaginable!
Thank you Donna, for once again, demonstrating the the immense long term value and benefits of studying and modeling (as best you can!) the right coach/mentor! Awesome!

Hi Mark!
Yes, we have to go to a deeper level when we are out there. We have to build confidence in those that follow us.
Sometimes in a comment, someone would write to me “I can’t do that” or “I am afraid to ___”
I immediately email or PM them and tell them something like “I noticed in your comment you said such and such, I believe you can…and then give them a solution to the problem.
We have to go the extra mile and cherish those that follow us.

A leader must develop an authority and the more of an authority you are, the more people will trust you and follow you. It’s a people’s business and we can only be successful if we help others become successful.

Hey Donna,
Really great post.
I’ve never heard of “Awesome Authority” before until I read your post.
What I really liked was when you said:
“Authority is all about you. Awesome authority is all about your readers, fans, followers, subscribers… those who trust you because you’ve given them unshakeable confidence, not in you, but in themselves.”
That is a classic line. I think, as bloggers, we sometimes get caught up in doing things for ourselves and how to increase and elevate our own status, that we forget that they main reason we’re blogging isn’t for us, it’s for the readers and followers.
They’re the ones who read and actively share out content because we continue to do something for them … provide them with answers to the questions they want to know.
It truly is all about community and constantly building it and when you apply the principles of awesome authority that you speak of,
Really great post here, Donna.
I’ll be sharing this shortly. Hope you have a great week ahead.

Absolutely! To gain authority is to serve others. It’s as simple as that. We have to write for our readers…help them by sharing what we have learned.
Sometimes I get an idea from a question someone asks me, and a post is born.
It is not about us, but rather what we give to our community.

Hi Donna,
Great post to read first thing in the morning. You are so right. I think a lot of people do not realize they are an authority on anything, let alone “awesome authority” until they began taking action to live their dreams.
Everyone knows and can help others with something. Today you are an “awesome authority” on how to be an awesome authority. Giving confidence to others who do not realize it yet.
Have a wonderful day, Monna

You are spot on. So many people don’t consider themselves as an authority. Well, truth is, especially in the blogging world, if you share something of value, there is always someone who will gain from it.
It is all about helping others and giving them the confidence they need. Sometimes we can work with them on a one to one basis. Sometimes, there are readers of a blog that never ever comment. They will send me an email thanking me.
As long as we are living like this and doing so in all aspects of our lives, we are helping someone.
I think that’s the reason why we exist in the first place!

Donna, great post. I followed you through how to get awesome authority but I never thought about “once they learn and gain confidence” do you then pick it up a notch or begin learning from them? This post really made me think.
And authority is something earned just like trust. You can’t buy it or gain it overnight! It’s hard work, sincerity and passion.
Thanks for sharing this one with us Donna. I hope you are enjoying this August week.

Do I pick it up a notch? I sure do, sometimes on my blog with a call to action. Other times, when I’m working with people I give one task. Once they complete it, there is reinforcement then I pick it up, “You completed this so great…Now here is the next step” kind of thing.

Hi Donna,
Awesome authority trumps authority on all counts because we’re in the business of helping others, not trying to pump ourselves up. Otherwise, we may just write a diary and leave it at that because people will tire of someone who writes only for themselves. Love this post Donna.
My intent is to take everybody with me. That’s my blogging from paradise mantra. My post is about me sharing my insights about retiring to a life of island hopping, through smart blogging, and if it weren’t, I wouldn’t be typing these words from Fiji.
You’ve built such a wonderful community here Donna that it’s evident; you are an awesome authority because your blog and brand is all about the people around you, and how you can help them. I’ve modeled much of what I do around you, and your approach, and around the techniques of folks like Adrienne Smith. Awesome community builders, you both are.
Make your blog about helping, inspiring and serving, and you’ll keep rising, and succeeding, and you’ll have so much more fun growing your community.
Thanks so much Donna.

Hi Donna,
If Authority is someone to be trusted with their expertise, then an Influencer is the same way, right? You have to trust an Influencer in order for them to to have an impact on you.
I like that, an Awesome Authority is someone who makes others trust themselves. He is a coach, an expert, a mentor, motivator, guide & tutor, and someone who solves the problem.
As usual it’s getting late here and I’m always behind. Can never get caught up with my blog reading, but I am doing my best. Night nite dear. Me going to catch some zzzzzzzzzzz. Will talk more later.

Hi Angela,
Yes, Awesome Authority is someone who makes others trust themselves. It can be done through blogging, coaching, etc.
Take our blogs for example. If we can reach just one person to take action and do something that is out of their box. They are thrilled. Whatever it is, it is all about connecting with others and encouraging them.
If we keep our focus on that, instead of “Look at me! I have this or that….I made so many dollars…..I’m the expert” I am the authority! That will be short lived.
Instead, it works the other way around. Being totally focused on helping someone. Living it, doing it and getting them to do one little baby step. That is the essence!
Night nite hope you have a wonderful day when you wake!

Hi Donna,
Well said indeed 🙂
Awesome authority is all about you and the trust your readers have in all that you say. You are so-so right in saying that. Sometimes when I share posts that are related to some problems my readers face, whether it’s related to blogging, family, or their relationship and they are able to relate to it because it has helped them in some way, they are so grateful because that post helped them.
I don’t know whether I am an authority as such and as yet I am not out to sell anything to those who trust me, though the trust is immense. But yes, things I write about generally are ones I have an idea about as they are related to life and we come across them in our relationship, family or blogging etc. and with time as you mature, you learn a lot that can help people in some way or the other. Now with the coaching that I’ve started, it’s all the more about having authority in yourself so that you can help others.
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

Hey Donna,
How did I miss this term “Awesome Authority”?
It’s my first time that I am reading such type of posts about authority. You rock Donna.;)
I got idea about creating awesome authority. You mean authority is about building trust among the readers, students we teach. Though I am not a guide or teacher yet but still may be someday I need to create my own authority. 🙂
When guides make their students feel as they are the one who know their problem which can be solved easily. Students will follow their guide if they have trust.
It’s really unbelievable that I am reading such type terms. It’s new for me.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Have fun this weekend.:)

Hi Ravi,
Many people have the same reaction: How did I miss the term Awesome Authority? Well, I just made it up!
The real point, though, is that you don’t want to focus on making everyone see you as an authority. Your real focus should be on helping them accomplish something real and tangible. This will raise their confidence, not in you, but in themselves.
That’s what makes you so awesome. Not that you know how to do it, but you just demonstrated how your student can do it. Why should he/she believe you? Because they just did it 🙂
For example, I go to your blog and you write about many technical aspects of blogging. I have no idea so I learn from you. If I apply something you have just taught me, You have immediately given me the confidence that I could step out of my box and install a plugin for example. I hold you in high regard because you just taught me something new…therefore You my friend are an Awesome Authority!

Wow! such a great post Donna and an awesome read this morning. Like Kumar, this is the first time I’m hearing this term “Awesome Authority”
Your first point in the action plan is just where everything revolves. If you miss that point, whatever steps you take further will be off the path. Once a problem that must be solved has been identified, the rest is sure to come by.
Your second point takes doubt out of the way. When people meet you for the first time, they need to be sure they are at the right place. A couple of things should be in place to generate that assurance.
Point three strengthens the assurance if they see clearly how you are taking them to a result-driven end.
Once readers see clearly your action plan, once they see your results, I think they’re in.
This applies to any business one is doing. You need trust from the people. Once you show them their problem and provide solutions, it will be hard for them not to tilt to your direction.
This goes in line with one of my recent posts on identifying a problem and providing solutions. But you added a lot of meat Donna.
This is awesomely sharable post!

Hi Enstine,
The term “Awesome Authority” is something I just made up lol! It just came to me by a question asked by one of my students.
Thank you for your wonderful input! It all boils down to encouraging people. Giving them one call to action that they can do. Once accomplished they crave for the next thing.
We are all here to create leaders, not followers. With that in mind, whatever we can give to another, giving freely with no expectations, can make one an awesome authority.
When we can celebrate with joy someone’s accomplishments, that is the best thing that can ever happen to us.

Donna,
Totally agree with on you this. Authority is what we should all strive for, but there is something that can stop a lot of the people, slowing them down to a halt, and that is greed.
My blog is pretty much brand new. But I’ve been on the internet since the start. Too many websites these days focus on what they can simply ‘take’ from their visitors, rather than focusing on what to give. Now of course getting those extra bucks is great, but it may stop right there. You want loyalty. A following. You want to treat your visitors as if they were guests in your house. Welcoming, caring, sharing. We all practice this in our every day lives, but a lot of people tend to forget it when we’re behind computer screens half way across the world.
People are emotional. Sensitive. Thats why we need to focus on how to make someone feel just as welcome if they were a guest in our home, the same way they are a visitor to our website.
Thanks Donna for the article.

Hi Ken,
You have given a great analogy here: We do want to make people feel at home…like a guest in our house. That’s how to achieve a good relationship with others.
Those that are “takers” have a short life span online. The people that shout out “buy me” never get any traction.
Our blog is a place where we share information FOR people. Those that come to visit us must be treated with respect.
When someone comments, we must reply, then go to their blog and reciprocate.
When we are marketing, we must treat our clients/customers with the highest regard. After all, if they come to us to learn something, we need to help them as much as we can.
