Bloggers want to be loved.
Yes, really.
They want to be regarded as the best in their field.
Not only the best, though, but the most reliable and trustworthy.
And they want their readers to really enjoy the time they spend on their blogs.
Now, I’m sure you want all those things, too.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
That’s why it’s important to know how to be a genuine blogger who people love.
Sure, you need to build relationships with folks.
But if you really dig deep into what you’re looking for as a blogger, I think you’d have to agree.
Most of all, you just want people to love you.
A Blogger Who People Love
Yes, you want them to love you for the person, leader and blogger that you are.
But, they will love you especially because you are genuine and caring in all your interactions with them.
You see, people won’t love you just because you give them great information.
They won’t love you because
- you deliver the latest news in your niche, or
- you’re a clever writer, or
- because you have a really great blog design.
Take It From Me
Now, here’s the thing.
I’ve been dealing with people who want to be loved for a long time.
If you know anything about me, you know that I have spent many years in private practice as an intuitive consultant.
That means I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about the things that were most important to them.
I’d usually begin each session asking my client “what would you like to talk about today.”
Understand, that before their appointment time, they usually had days to think about this.
In fact, they typically would call to schedule an appointment with me because they had a pressing concern.
So, I was thinking about this recently.
Now that I spend so much time mentoring bloggers and online business people, I hear the same kind of things I did as an intuitive consultant.
It’s different, but really, it’s the same.
Ultimately, it gets down to people wanting to be
- accepted,
- appreciated,
- understood, and at the top of the list…
- loved.
It’s always about being loved.
Regardless of who I was talking to.
I had clients who were practicing psychotherapists, business owners, CEO’s, real estate investors, law enforcement agents, medical doctors, teachers, police officers.
One of my regular clients was a psychiatrist who was the Director of a gold standard psychiatric hospital.
Several were high-profile actors and performers.
Our sessions were always so interesting about so many different things, as you can imagine.
Being Someone Who People Love
But almost always, the focus got back to one thing.
Love.
Everybody wants to know about their love life.
And, yes, everybody wants to be loved.
I remember once when I worked with a leading forensic psychiatrist.
He was heading a team trying to solve a famous murder case, and he wanted me to help him tie up some loose ends.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
An associate accompanied him, just to take notes and to record the session.
It was a fascinating exchange, even if it was more than a bit creepy.
Just as I thought things were winding down, the forensics psychiatrist asked his associate to leave the room.
He said that he wanted to talk to me about a few “personal things.”
Well, guess what it was.
He wanted to know some things about his love life, of course.
Everyone strives to be someone who people love.
How To Be A Genuine Blogger Who People Love
So now, as I’m working and consulting with bloggers and entrepreneurs, I’m finding a very similar situation.
Not that they want to know about their “love lives” per se.
After all, I’m not doing personal intuitive consultations with them.
I’m mentoring them to improve their business.
But ultimately, they are still concerned about wanting to be loved… not in a personal relationship, but by their audience.
You see, the most powerful ingredient in a successful business is developing a loyal following.
That doesn’t happen when people just like the information you’re sharing.
It doesn’t happen because they think you are an “authority” or “thought leader.”
It happens because they “love” you.
They love your energy, your enthusiasm… they love something about you.
Blogger, Love Thyself
So what makes your readers, followers, email subscribers… what makes your audience actually love you?
The first thing you have to know about being loved is that people will only love you if you love yourself.
So as a blogger, the first thing to do is work daily on self love.
Practice being happy… just being you.
It may be a fake “happy” at first.
But over time, you will be able to be truly happy because “you are who you are.”
When you reach this point, you will feel begin to live your life through a deep sense of self-love.
And everyone will know it.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
It’s like a burning flame that will consume you.
It will shine so brightly that everyone will see it.
Then they will be immediately and instinctively attracted to you.
Attraction is not a mental process.
It’s an instinctive response.
If You Pretend, It Surely Will End
Now, this is pretty much the same advice that I used to give people who wanted to find romantic love in their lives.
They would usually tell me things like
- “maybe I should redo my hair” or
- “I think I should change this or that about myself” or
- “if I start reading more, I think I’ll be more interesting to talk to.”
I would just look at them and say “just be yourself.”
One of my favorite things to say was this…
If you pretend, it surely will end.
The idea being… that making pretenses and trying to be someone that you are not, just never works.
True, it might help get the relationship off the ground in the beginning.
But eventually the person that you’re trying to impress is going to start seeing the real you.
It’s just a matter of time before that relationship will be doomed.
So never try to be someone you’re not.
Not in love, not in blogging and not in business.
Your friends, lovers and audience will see through you soon enough.
It’s just a matter of time before they learn that you were just putting on pretenses, and then they will be disappointed.
How To Be A Genuine Blogger
Another thing I would tell people is to be genuine in caring about the person you’re building a relationship with.
Don’t fake it.
Mean it.
And let them know that you care.
How many times have I heard people say things like…
“I really liked this guy (or girl), but it never worked out.”
When I asked why, the answer would be something like this…
“He didn’t really think that I was serious about the relationship.”
“But you really liked him didn’t you?”
“Yes, of course I did.”
“So what did you do to let him/her know that?”
“Nothing much, I guess. I figured it was obvious.”
Well, news flash… people are not mind-readers.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
When you are genuine… when you really do care about people… you have to make that clear to them.
In other words, you have to actually tell them that you care.
As it is in love, it is in business.
Bloggers and entrepreneurs have to do the same thing.
Always make it clear that you care about people.
Their first tip off that you really care is when they see that you are a genuine person, not just a “marketer.”
But then you have to take it further.
You do this by sharing excellent content.
And by being responsive and available to them all the time.
When they ask you a question, answer it.
Reply to them when they leave you a comment.
It doesn’t take a lot of effort, but it does take a lot of sincerity.
And it requires being genuine in all your interactions.
Tell ‘Em That You Care… Just For Them
There are so many ways to show people that you care about them.
When they see your genuine feelings for them, they’re much more likely to care about you, too.
Again, it’s like dating.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
Anytime somebody says “oh, such and such a guy/gal really thinks that you’re hot”…
…then, all the sudden you turn around and think “wow, maybe I should talk to him/her.”
You see, they got your attention by tipping their hat to the fact that they really care about you.
So you gave them a second look.
A second (or even first) look that you probably would never have given them otherwise.
So bloggers, be genuine about caring for your readers.
And let them know you care.
Tell them you do every time you get a chance.
Do it with your actions.
But also, do it with your words.
Tell them
- in your emails,
- in comments,
- during Skype or phone conversations.
Tell them “I appreciate you” in every way you can, and every time you get the chance.
They will love you for it!

Hi Donna,
Well, you already know that I love you as a blogger and I’m pretty taken by your self-confidence and style, as well.
From experience and observation, I’d agree with your point that self-love is a prerequisite to loving others. It’s sorta like forgiveness. If you’re finding it hard to forgive someone, it’s usually because you haven’t yet worked past your self-anger for allowing them take advantage of your vulnerability & gullibility on the first place – and you won’t until you forgive yourself for being ‘you’.
Other than your insightful message, I really enjoyed reading about your life as an ‘intuitive consultant’. Although I didn’t know about that part of your business and only have a foggy notion of what the heck it is, your stories about your clients were outstanding. Your depth as a business consultant and as a likeable, regular person is amazing!

Thanks so much for the kind words.
I think people are always attracted to those bloggers who demonstrate their self love in the form of self confidence.
People are always always want to be folks who are comfortable being themselves.
The more we can show people that we just “are who we are”… regardless of what judgments are passed on us… the more they will want to hang around and even come back for more.

I believe that the surest way to lose someone is to not be honest. You must bee the person you are because when one is not genuine it becomes very obvious, very quickly. In no way does this mean one can be rude, they still must be polite. Just do not pretend to be something you are not.
Elise Cohen Ho recently posted..Welcome to The Eating Season
Hi Elise,
I sure agree with that.
You’ve got to be honest and sincere.
Realize that people come to a blog because they’re looking for genuine people and real ideas and advice.
They can get double talk from all the big company sites all day long.
Being sincere and genuine is one of the big advantages we have over big company blogs that are funded with seemingly unlimited advertising dollars.

Intriguing stuff Donna. Personally I’ve never gone for the “love” part of things, but I have gone for likability. I’ve always said that people need to like what they’re writing first before expecting others to like it. Whether it’s being helpful, being entertaining, or educating, we all have to write a style that feels genuine, not only to the reader but ourselves. If that can’t be accomplished then it’ll be hard to keep people coming back… except for spammers lol
Mitch Mitchell recently posted..How Blogging Can Enhance Your Business
Hi Mitch,
I think we’ll always have the spammers that’s for sure, haha.
Meanwhile, I don’t know that it’s so much that we need to have people love everything we do…
but certainly to love the fact that they get a lot of value from it.
This usually happens when we help them solve a problem they’re struggling with.
So I think that’s the main thing bloggers have to focus on doing.

Hi Donna
I completely agree with you about writing from the heart. That is a great post. I recently made a video all about ‘Finding Your Passion’ where I suggested that you stop copying the internet ‘gurus’ and start being yourself. Like you, I believe that the only person from whom you need to seek approval is YOURSELF! The people who are meant to resonate with you will do so, and the ones who don’t were never meant to. Thank you for this… Richard
Hi Richard,
So true that the only person from whom you need approval is yourself. Good to know you have made a video of “finding your passion” because so many get confused when it comes to this. We have to communicate from the heart be it in text copy, video or podcasts.

I have read so many contents on similar topics but this is really different and I loved reading it. I believe consistency is something which is really important for being successful in any profession, be it blogging or any other profession. Other two strong characteristics are never-give-up attitude and hunger for learning new things. Obviously domain knowledge and expertise are must.
Being a digital marketing & SEO trainer I use to meet with people all the day and I have seen that people lose their hope and passion very fast and give up frequently. In blogging people must build a mindset of not thinking about the money at least in their first year of blogging. I recommend my trainees to focus more on learning than earning.

More sensational love-based blogging here Donna.
You need to love yourself before readers love you because all is a simple reflection of your predominant vibe. Folks generally try to change themselves to conform, to manipulate, or to try to get people to love them. Big mistake. Because this proves you do not love yourself as you are, and this vibe will reflect back to you as folks who do not love you as you are.
Everything about my blog and brand is self-acceptance. I am cool with me. But I had to accept me and love me and feel at peace with being me before this being arose.
You have this down pat Donna; you genuinely love and accept yourself, and your raving tribe merely reflects this fact back to you.

Once I loved myself, I was able to attract all good things to me. It sounds pretty simple, but for me it was a few years of practicing. But that was then and this is now.
I always wanted to help others since I was a kid, but lacked confidence. Once I got it, I was on a roll and still am.

Another beautiful post from this blog☺.
Everyone wants to be loved. That’s one of the essential needs of people and bloggers are not an exception.
Self-love is awesome and so important. I don’t know how possible it is to build a good interpersonal relationship with others if we can’t appreciate ourselves.
Taking time to genuinely let people know that you care about them will make people care about you too.
It’s a reciprocal thing.
The bottom line is that, to be a blogger people love, let people know you care and those who appreciate this will definitely reciprocate.
Don’t forget to be natural and genuine.
Thank you for writing this.

Hey Donna,
Wow, another awesome blog post. But also, one that is truly inspirational!
I totally agree that its important that a blogger captures the hearts of their audience. Until that happens, the audience will not feel a part of the blogger’s tribe!
The best way to be a genuine blogger who people love? Well in addition to all the great points you’ve mentioned, I think it is important to be vulnerable. We should be able to show that at the core of our MESSage is a mess which we have just about turned around.
And while we are on the subject, I think its important to also let our mentors and virtual mentors know that we truly appreciate them. So…I just wanted you to know that I truly appreciate you: for being a great blogger who’s always willing to share your knowledge and expertise, a fantastic net-worker and an inspirational virtual mentor to many people like me!
Best regards,

Hi Donna,
This is a great post.
I think becoming a genuine blogger that others love requires a bit of hard work. To be loved as a genuine blogger, one must be true to oneself just as you rightly assert.
Being true to oneself involves writing and posting original content that meets the need of the readers. It is also very important to show love and care to readers by responding to their comments and providing answers to their questions.
we must also form the habit of keeping our promise. For example, if we promise to write on a certain topic at a given time, we must keep the promise. By so doing, we would gain the trust of our readers and consequently gain their love.

Hi Donna,
Great article. I think the whole world all boils down to be being loved or not. My personal theory is prisons are full of people who were unloved.
All bloggers want to be loved for the person and leader that we are. “But, they will love you especially because you are genuine and caring in all your interactions with them” It’s not the news in your niche, or that you are a good author or you have a super blog design. You can find these things everywhere. What really matters is YOU and that you care. The fact that you appreciate them and you let them know it. Just yesterday I was out visiting clients and at the end of the day I was thinking “Wow, people just wanted to talk today, they wanted to know what my weekend plans were and I asked them about theirs and learned a lot about their families, etc. I love that kind of interaction with others. Hello Donna,
This one is so true, indeed bloggers want to be loved. By their clients and also by their fellow bloggers and its community.
Yeah every one wants to be the best in their fields and this feelings is very important to maintain the pace of moving
forward towards our goal.
If we want our readers to love us, then we too need to provide them with care and love, reaching them consistly and talking
about their problems and what do they want so that they can lead their life with a positive mindset. There are millions of
people who are doing the same thing as we do, thus why they should love us, what extra assests do we have with in ourself
that will attract them to us.
Talking to people and sharing their problems and getting connected to them is the main thing that we all need to do.
Every enterpreneur wants to be loved, this is how they will get going in the long run. If no,body loves them, then they are
doomed.
Thats the key, we need to find our own happiness first, we need to derived self motivation first, then we can pass it to others.
Being stuck with positive vibes and dispatching the negativity is the key. We can not loved by the people if we hate our
self or we are not happy with our own thing.
Thanks for the share.
Have a great weekend ahead 🙂
Shantanu.

Hi Shantanu,
“Being stuck with positive vibes and dispatching the negativity is the key” …
I certainly agree with that.
In fact when you’re in that positive vibe then you’re definitely going to be looking to help people all you can.
You’re going to become a real problem solver.
And you’re going to show them that you really care.
As you say … you’re going to let it shine through.
Got to lose that negativity and yes, that IS the key.
But not just negativity towards others.
Negativities about yourself too.

Hi Donna,
That’s a coincidence – in a Facebook (I think) post today we were asked to write down 3 words to describe how we would like to be thought of in our business. The piece of paper is still in front of me and two of those words were “reliable and trustworthy”!
I hadn’t really thought about being loved, but it won’t take much to persuade me. Certainly in my personal life I would like to feel loved.
There are some bloggers (yourself obviously) who I feel really care about their readers. Many of the PAC community I care about even though I’ve never met them and feel they maybe care about me too.
So, yes, it’s a great goal to have, and an important one. Being genuine seems a good start.

Hi Joy,
I like your answer to the question of being reliable and trustworthy. When you find that important, others will come to love you. Not the romantic love, but caring and feeling like you are a friend.
You are a genuine caring person…that I know for sure. This is why people will read your blog posts, comment on them and share it to the world to see. Why? Because the love you.

What an inspirational message Donna! The funny thing is that just the other day I was chatting with a fellow blogger who was moaning about what a struggle it’s been to build traffic. Long story short, I believe I got a pretty good clue what the problem was when this blogger commented to me that she’d love to find a way to write and blog not have to deal with people. Hum. I suggested she might be happier just taking her blog private and use it as an online journal then she wouldn’t have to worry about traffic, but I don’t think she got the point because she just laughed.

Hi Donna,
I can imagine how many interesting stories you have heard. Everything starts within ourselves, we do need to love ourselves first in order to be good friend, partner, son, sister, mother, blogger.. It’s silly to say that you know how to capture our hearts, it’s obvious. Your appreciate everyone of us, you always reply and thank us, that’s why we come back. We trust you, and you also have great content.
Thank you for sharing!
Hey Jarvee,
I do have so many stories. My friends say I should write a book about experiences I have had. But where’s the time? he he he
Indeed, we must first love ourselves, love our business, and love to help people grow. Once it is genuine in our hearts, business will blossom.
Thank you so much for your kind response,

Hi Donna,
What a great topic for an article! I like the point your trying to make here. I used to work as a sales consultant/manager a lot of the stuff you refer to in your article is stuff sales consultants get taught in order to build rapport. A sales consultant will pay close attention to their audience, so he can develop an emotional bond. The emotional bond or rapport is used as a way of gaining trust and authority. This allows an effective consultant to identify buying triggers by using emotional impulse and so forth.
It’s no different with being a genuine blogger I believe just on a different playing ground 🙂
Thank you for the great piece on blogging!
Hi Richard,
Learning the art of building a rapport is fine. But when a person has it naturally, it comes so much easier. As long as one who is learning really honestly cares, there will be a good rapport between client and sales.

Hi Again,
I’m a person who had to work hard and didn’t or don’t have that natural charm. Women naturally have this kind of charm to build rapport in majority of cases. If the person or consultant doing the rapport building is genuine and doesn’t care about his potential customer he won’t be successful. People usually see through fake feelings (not always) so unless that consultant is an exceptional talker they will struggle.
This is just my experience though 🙂

Hi Richard,
I watch my husband teaching (we share the business) and he is very cut and dry and to the point. Not a great talker but an excellent teacher.
Valid point that women and men can differ, but I’ve learned from warm women to men that had no time to chit chat…So It really doesn’t matter. As long as a person comes from their unique honest point, peoople will love to learn from them.

Hi Donna,
This is such a beautiful and inspiring article!
Everyone wants love. You know it. I know it. But in order for that to happen, we must love ourselves first, right? And it works the same for our businesses (I believe). If we are “in love” with what we do, it will shine through to our audiences. They will see the friendliness, our caring personalities, and embrace us for who we are, not what we can give them.
I know many of my clients have told me how super awesome I am. I don’t believe I’m total awesomesauce but I will go above and beyond to make sure my clients are happy. However, it’s something that just comes naturally for me. It’s not pushed. It’s not fake. And I believe they, my clients, pick up on it.
If we can’t capture the hearts of our audience in some way, we won’t have “that” audience. A loving, attentive audience is better than no audience at all. Let’s your beauty shine through for all to see and reap the love that comes back to you.
Thanks for this post on a Friday, Donna. I really needed the extra boost!
You rock, momma!

Hi Bren,
I think you are awesomesauce! It is true, if we love ourselves people will love us. If we love our business, people will intuitively feel it.
Our clients will choose us because of our caring hearts. This is something that cannot be faked because people usually have a “gut feeling” about it. If they follow that feeling it will lead them to those that will genuinely care about them. If not, and they follow their head only, they will bounce from one person to another trying to reach their own goals.
Girl, I’ve seen it all lol. I get those who are in it for themselves and run…not walk away. Then there are people like you who are genuine, loving, and truly caring about others. And that my friend is the secret sauce to success!
Wishing you the best of everything,
-Donna
