The definition of “procrastination,” according to Wikipedia is this:
“In psychology, procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of lower priority, or doing something from which one derives enjoyment, and thus putting off important tasks to a later time.”
Procrastination occurs frequently in the internet marketing world. We start with a well-intentioned and clear enough goal, but get off our track chasing “shiny new objects”, or contorting ourselves to get through new learning curves that come along with new projects we almost carelessly jump (maybe “fall”) into. So many things that capture our interest, actually defeat our main purpose… to achieve our goals.
Brian Tracey talks about “Eating the Frog,” by which he means developing a habit of completing your most important, but often least desirable tasks first. You may have all your tasks set up in a neat row, but avoid accomplishing the major one you most need to complete.
Special: Snag This For FREE… “My 3 List Building Machines” (See How I Do It!)
Say that you are working on an ebook.
Perhaps it never gets done because rather than sitting at the keyboard and actually writing, you divert your attention to more enticing tasks. You might first check your email, your blog, and all your immediate social sites. By the time you’ve done all that, you have lost the energy and mindset required to put hours into your major task of writing your ebook.
What Brian Tracey talks about is developing this as a habit, so you can avoid procrastinating.
I find that in Internet Marketing, many of us fail to eat the frog.
Even as I preach the pitfalls of procrastination, I find myself floundering some days with very good excuses that I’m pretty good at devising. We all tend to want to clear out “stuff” BEFORE we get to the nitty gritty of our golden tasks.
And that, my friends, is a big mistake! It is the chief tactic of the master procrastinator.
To avoid this, I would suggest that you write down a list.
1. My goal. What I decide to accomplish. An example: create an ebook product for sale or free offer.
2. My task. This breaks down into many sub-tasks, of course, but the main one is to write the ebook.
3. My deadline. Figure out realistically how much time you will need to create the finished product (the ebook in this case).
4. My strategy. Write down all the things you will need to do in order to achieve your goal. Using the example of an ebook, you will want to make time for research, develop topics and sub-topics, decide how much you want to write on each topic, and the overall length of the finished ebook.
5. Do It
This is just one example of how “eating the frog” can help you overcome procrastination.
And don’t feel like you are alone.
Most of us procrastinate.
We are not machines. We may have our DMO (Daily Method of Operation) all set in place and intend to follow it well. But somehow, we slide off the track.
Sometimes life issues get in our way. Sometimes we are called in to do a webinar with someone and have to drop everything we had intended to do that day.
Sometimes we’re just tired, and allow ourselves to find more pleasurable outlets than staying on task. There are so many “good” reasons to digress.
I find that for the majority of internet marketers that I consult with, procrastination is prevalent and truly destructive.
I’ve that there are specific techniques and methods we can employ to dig deep and beat the procrastination trap.
I know because I was once a hopeless procrastinator myself. I was determined to undergo the brain shift necessary to develop what I call a “breakthrough mindset” so I could overcome procrastination and succeed in my online business.
It was like a breath of fresh air when I came to realize that I could actually accomplish SO much that I never thought I could, simply by overcoming deeply ingrained habits that feed procrastination.
I really hope this will help you to make your own mind-shift breakthroughs, and overcome procrastination once and for all.
Let me know what you think of this.
I’d love to get your feedback.
Is your business suffering because of your habitual procrastination?
Just leave your comment below.

Donna

Well I would love to say that I have never suffered from this, but sadly I have suffered many many times from this.
My problem is that unless I have an absolute deadline, then I can get very easily distracted.
I am totally on form when I make myself a list of the most important things I have to achieve in a week, and then by day, but if for any reason something comes in and upsets this routine, then my automatic subconscious takes over and sadly that is “work in chaos”.
Great post Donna and I seriously think I will need to sign up to your free 7 day course!

I know exactly what you mean! I have been in that place where if something upset my routine, I freaked out and my subconscious went to that same place.
I had to put a stop to that because it was uncomfortable and I don’t want to be one of those 97% of people who give up on marketing. (guess I am very stubborn lol)
I went out and joined a “mindset” group and it did help me. I still apply those principles. Some of them are on the series.

Wonderful post Donna!
Most of us DO procrastinate, and I am one of them too! I think we tend to easily get distracted if we don’t set goals, deadlines, and reminders for ourselves. Loved all the tips you shared, the best being the last one – DO IT, which is something that we fail doing!
It took me a long time to set my routine with a full house, kids, and family to manage. But now, when I know what needs to be done first and what’s priority, everything falls into place, and I am able to do things more efficiently than when it’s kept aside for later and keeps piling up.
Thanks for sharing, as this sure is a wonderful reminder to recognize what’s priority and get down to do that first, before you really exhaust yourself doing other tasks that aren’t that important. 🙂
Thanks Harleena,
Good to see that you have got your priorities in order. We do have to stick to our deadlines and goals. And yes..the last on the list “DO IT” is the most important thing I could say.
As long as we are doing something on our goals, we are ok. Procrastination can be a small thing one can conquer OR it can drag you down. It all depends on how much we give in to it.
Cheers!

Hey Donna — what a great idea for a video series. As soon as I’m done commenting I will go up and grab it!
I’m so glad that you said that everyone procrastinates, because we do! I pride myself on managing my time and being productive, but at least once every week (or more!) I find myself procrastinating about doing something that would be good for my business.
At least for me, it’s almost always a result of Fear. Fear of doing something new, fear of not doing it right, etc. I have always found that just the process of starting gets me through alot of that fear.

Goal, Task, deadline. All easy to do and easy not to do. These great tips are spot on when it comes to getting after that “procrastination beast” I also like to add that I’m writing a few notes around each task I wish to complete.
As I write my list, with these little memory joggers I’m actually starting to want to complete the task. I’m often looking forward to completing the set goal and anxiously moving to the next.
Another thing I do is try to lump certain activities together. It helps to keep the mind engaged in a frame of reference that way.
Thanks for the great strategy and tips!

Yes Procrastination is a beast. So much so, that sometimes we don’t even realize we are procrastinating. It is something to keep in mind when we start dropping one goal for another.

Inspiring article, Donna. About 6 months ago I made a blogging/online list. I made time on it for social networking. When this time is up, regardless of ‘where’ I am in discussions etc. I leave and do the next thing on the timetable.
This has helped me to focus on all the sites I want to spend time on – equally. It has also made a great impact on the work I actually get done. My writing time is used for that. My repairing old blog posts time is used there and creating blog posts don’t get neglected because I’m spending too much time on Facebook. This was one of the best things I did – production-wise.
I’ve even got time on it to spend building links, looking for new projects, etc.

Hi Donna,
Procrastination gets to everyone in one degree to another. We all do it and it is a poison to anything we want to get done be it in our Internet marketing business or life in general.
Discipline kills procrastination. Discipline is the energy used to take action to do something that needs to be done with out giving your self rational (to a certain point of course) and even irrational excuses.
We must be reasonable of course but we can’t start looking for excuses in order to avoid doing something that needs to get done. Key word there being Avoid.
We, our minds will play these tricks on us and we must be intelligent enough to know how to take our business and even life in general seriously and avoid procrastination.
It all stands within reason,
Terry Conti
Terry Conti recently posted..Your Own Custom Opt-in Box and Aweber
Very true Terry,
But we have to take into consideration the “overwhelm” effect many people are dealing with. Not everyone can recognize their excuses like you have said above. That’s the important factor in the scheme of things.
I was inspired to write this because I wanted to give people who tend to procrastinate an uplift, so they can deal with things in a time-sensitive way to prevent overwhelm.
Thanks for your input.

I’m not going to lie to you and say I never procrastinate but to me it’s just putting things off you really just don’t want to do. I’ve been guilty of that a time or two or maybe three or four. lol…
But I write down everyday what I need to do and I just do it. I check it off after it’s completed. Now I might have a very busy day and I’m not able to accomplish everything but that’s mainly due to time restraints. I make sure it’s done the following day.
It does make me mad though when people say they’re going to do something but they don’t. That’s why I try my best to not be that way. But, I have my moments.
Great post but I don’t expect anything less from you young lady. Hell, I’m still stuck on that fear post you wrote. 😉

Donna, I love “eat the frog” and it’s the one thing that helps me keep going even when I really just want to check my email or my Facebook page or whatever else. It’s so great because you can pick that one horrible thing and DO IT and then it’s done and you feel so great about it.
I’m a big planner. I like to think things through, write everything down, organize, optimize, plan… I can plan myself right into next week but that doesn’t mean anything is getting done. Your #5 is the biggest thing for me – just do it. I remind myself of that every day. Stop thinking and planning, enough already – GO.
My daily mantra is pretty much exactly what you said: “Eat that frog. Do it.”
For me it also helps to think of what I want “out of my life” so to speak. For example, when I wake up tomorrow morning, what do I want to be GONE so I don’t have to think about it or worry about it any more? Those are usually the frogs so I tackle them.
The other horrible thing about procrastination is that it makes things seem a lot bigger and harder than they really are. When you put off a project it grows and grows in your mind until it becomes a huge burden. But often when you do it, you find it’s not much at all, it’s only your perception.
Thanks for this kick in the pants, guess I’d better go do something now 🙂

And yes, so true what you said about procrastination. It does make things seem bigger and harder than they really are. I call it a nagging post-it in the mind. It is always there lingering. Once we tackle it, we do find that it wasn’t bad at all.

If it weren’t for the last minute, nothing would get done?
I’m usually pretty good about NOT procrastinating but lately i’ve had so much on my plate that i get overwhelmed and rather than focusing on one task and one chunk at a time i try to do too much and nothing gets done..
Pracrastination just kind of creeps up on you. You think you are being productive but in fact you are stalling with other little tasks..
A little trick i used to do to keep me on track is this..
At night before i go to bed, i write down 3 things (the power of three) i need to accomplish the next day. Then the next morning my mind sets into great and i start completing the tasks. Then as i tick them off my list, i feel this sense of gratification. For some reason, it doesn’t work unless i write them down and then stick them on my monitor first thing when i wake up. It’s like i’m faking myself out. If that’s even possible..
LOL

I find that writing things down work. Call it accountability to yourself, or a magic wand, it works!
I find that when I write things down it relieves the “post-its” in my head. Doing it the night before is a great idea! I’m going to try that. I usually write my “troubles” down before I go to sleep so it is out of my mind and I can sleep well.
This is great….I love it and will keep you posted of how it works.

Hi Donna,
This post is right up my alley. Yes, we all procrastinate, even the ones who teach others how not to, and write about procrastination.
In my case, sometimes, doing less important things rather the ones I’ve got to do is like “comfort food”. By this I mean like some people would go to the fridge and eat that piece of cake even though they shouldn’t, I’d go on YouTube and listen to my favorite French song, for example.
In the end at least I won’t get fat 🙂 but that still puts me behind.
I think the best remedy against procrastination is as you mentioned getting new habits and stick to them as much as possible. Write down the tasks for the day and check them out as you go. Only when it’s all checked out you are free to do what ever floats your boat.
Thanks for this great post, Donna 🙂

I like your analogy! We all get side-tracked and sometimes we need to listen to a song, or play a game online, to re-focus. As long as we don’t cross that line where we cannot get things done, we are O.K.
When we get to the point of that nagging feeling of knowing our goal just keeps getting pushed aside, that is where we need to focus on our procrastination.
Thanks always,

Hi Steve! I know, I used to be the queen of procrastination myself. So I had to find the How To, apply it to my life and then share it with my peeps! It worked for me that’s why I had to pass it on to others.
It does take a while to incorporate to your lifestyle, but it feels so much better when you do.

Hi Donna,
I’ve found that email is my biggest distraction. The days when I don’t open my email until later in the day are my most productive days. I think that emails make it easy to get distracted with things that aren’t important. When I check my email later in the day I am more aware of how little time I have. I am able to focus on what needs my attention and ignore the rest.
It really is amazing what a difference that one step makes! It reminds me of the analogies of the rocks. If you don’t put the large rocks into the jar first they will never fit once the little ones are in there.
Stacy
Hey Stacy, Love that analogy! I used to do the same thing: open my emails first. Now I deal with them later in the day. That may sound like a small step, but in the scheme of things it’s a biggie! I’ve done that with my Social Media Platforms also. I have certain times a day that I visit them.
Being on Social Media most of the time require lots of work, but I have to crunch it. I do Eat the Frog the first thing in the morning.
I have so many clients that Procrastinate, and I found it an important subject to shout out. But of course, they are mainly newbies and you know how confusing things can get when you first start marketing on the internet.

I do think those that make excuses for not following a schedule is certainly grounds for procrastination. But if you are trying and sticking to a plan, once that unforeseen phone call or client that throws a kink into your day — the true test is if you can get back on course without throwing in the towel.

Procrastination is one of the most common reasons for failure. Good intentions are great but without taking action nothing will happen. in addition to your valuable tips Donna I have started working in 13 week increments. I have a chart that outlines what I want to accomplish in the next 13 weeks and that becomes my focus. I write down on the chart what needs to be accomplished at a minimum each day and I’ve learned not to set myself too many tasks which simply sets one up for failure. 13 weeks is a chunk of time that I find enough to get some huge projects done but not too long to lose interest. thanks for sharing Donna

Hi Donna,
This applies to me 😉 (It’s a secret) I thought it’s only few including me or because I’m tired. May be that’s another fact too. But now I get it.
When it comes to my blog I have few posts still in the draft where I didn’t complete, because I’ve got more new topics and considered they are more important than what I was working on. Sometimes I get queries asking for help from my readers on my blog and absolutely I go help them as I don’t wanna wait them long for a reply.
Setting deadline is a must and else we never go for it. Right? However that’s me 😉 Sometimes we have to face unpredictable high priorities in the middle of such processes. I think we should be flexible enough to adopt with changes and adjust our deadline in such scenarios. That’s where change management comes. no? 🙂 So deadlines should be not strict, as I guess.
Thanks for sharing your tips and specially for coming up with this topic dear. It’s like you’ve read my mind and found what I was aware of 😉
