I have been working with many newbies coming into the blogging world.
The one question they have asked me is how long will it take for me to make money?
Well, there is no answer to that question. If you have been around for a while, you have learned that already, but if you haven’t there is “No Free Lunch!”
When I’m asked about making money online, I like to give people some concrete information they can relate to.
So, I’m telling you now that building a business online is just like building one offline.
If you decided to open a store, for instance, what would you need? Rent a space, design the interior, fill it with display cases, and then stock it with your stuff. How much would that cost you? Regardless of what you want to sell, it would have to cost a pretty penny!
Then comes the advertising. Even if you are in a prime location, people have to know who you are and what you are selling. You cannot just depend on the folks that just happen to pass by your front door. So there is more money spent there.
Are you with me so far? Well, in this video I’ll explain the truth about what it takes in terms of time and money to build a business online.
So, you see, if you are just coming on board or you have been here for a while, you need a home base, which is your blog. That’s where your friends and visitors will come in and take a look around.
If you are giving good content, and your readers come back repeatedly, you’ll do fine. People visit their favorite food store or boutique because of the quality of the products, the pricing and the service. They’ll visit your blog for the same reasons. But it takes time and effort to build a dedicated following.
With so much information on the internet, people are understandably confused about where to start. Too often, they’ve been told how “easy” it is and how quickly they can start banking substantial profits.
But seasoned and professional bloggers know that it takes patience, persistence and some investment. The facts are that you will have to put some high quality “meat” on your blog, and you will need to outreach to others.
So my friends, when the next shiny object pops up, take your time and evaluate it. If someone is telling you that business will flourish easily and it will cost tons of money to do so, take a step back. Is it a reputable company or individual offering this promise? Are they trustworthy? Do you know others who are already involved, or are you going it alone?
Remember, there is no get rich quick business. If you still don’t believe me, check out the hottest trending marketers. Dig around and find “their story.” If they are honest, and many are, they will tell you about the rugged obstacles they had to overcome to get where they are today.
I’d love to have your comments below. Have you found a get rich quick business online? Have you tried some out? What was your experience?
After you leave a comment, please share this article on your social sites.
Thanks for stopping by, and for sharing your input!
Thanks!

Hi Donna,
Many people usually fall in the trap of wanting to make money quick. They forget the fact that making money is something which comes with time, investment and hard/smart work. For those who blog and concerntrate alot about money, there are those who will surely end up abandoning their one month old blogs cause they just realize that it wasn’t as easy as they expected.
Once you have the passion, just keep doing your thing and the rewards will obviously come. One thing I noticed about all successful people was that, they had the passion, and never gave up at any point. Yes, the money part of it was what most of them needed to make, but I realized that none of them concerntrated so much on the money part while their business was still in the starting up process.
Donna, you explained everything very well and I know every newbie who reads this is going to understand what it takes to make money, more especially online.
Thanks for the great post. I did enjoy every bit of it.

If it is a passion and loving what you do, money will eventually flow.
I think it’s like that in anything in life. Following your passion, never giving up, and most of all being of help to others has it’s great rewards.

Donna, you are a star!
Yes, starting a business offline or online takes courage and everyone needs support from those who have accomplished each steps and still have mastered just the fundamentals of this thing. No one masters the industry that is why personal continued development is key.
There is a huge difference of establishing resources of revenue which makes a huge part of the foundation you will need to get ready for creating your business.
Once your resources of revenue are at the level to fund all your projects and personal needs. Then you can establish that company.
My blog is not my business site. My blog is part of me and tells stories of my accomplishments through all the challenges daily I still face. This is where people can learn who you are and the way you think to accomplish growth, in your business and personal development.
Learn, love live and grow are the activities you do each day. The end result is changing each day. The journey is what this is about helping others and benefiting from just doing that. Prosperity is different for each one of us yet having a true Entrepreneurial Spirit is a blessing. That is something that can not be learned and you either was blessed with it or not.
Donna, great wake-up article for me and love the video

Your comment is so enlightening. Yes, our blogs are not our business per se, but it is a place where we constantly give whatever we know to our readers.
From there, we build our own community of people who will know like and trust us.
Then they usually ask “what do you do?” See…they come to us instead of us chasing them down.
I really don’t have the stomach for chasing people down or trying to convince them of what I have to offer.
Cheers!

Totally agree. There’s no such thing as get rich quick. Building a business online seems easy but it does take time and effort to build it. One needs to have structure and consistently perform their tasks in order to see results. It’s just like having an offline business. Every business, be it online or offline needs nurturing so it grows and become sustainable.

Hey Donna! This is a great article! It amazes me at the amount of people who LIE! Listen to this, I had a few calls this week and they were pretty much on this same line.
Well, I have been around long enough to know the right questions to ask so when this person told me I was going to make X amount of money just for giving them $1.75 (Yes only $1.75)
I asked them how long they have been doing this and how much money have they made.
Get this they both told me they made over $1000 in less than 7 days OK Yes Yes Where do I sign and where do I send the money Right?
Well Donna I should have sent them here, No there is no quick and easy way to grow a legitimate business. it does take hard work and a lot of time to build But Yes It can be done! Thanks for sharing.. Chery :))

Many years ago, I worked with John Milton Fogg, author of a number of books and a fantastic coach and speaker. At the time, he’d just launched a book called “Get Rich Slow”. It was probably a poor title for the book, because it put some people off. The book was all about building a business through building relationships.
This was a long time before so many people started talking about Attraction Marketing, and even more people were “trying out” the “Get Rich Quick” way. I likened that to those who blasted out their message to the masses (it was easier those days), and there was much more spam in your email, because there were no controls. A few people actually got rich fairly quickly by blasting out millions of emails. But, their fortune didn’t last long:-)

Hi Donna,
you are so right, it takes time, effort and some money to build a business.
As we grow and expand through learning how to incorporate the online tools eventually our business may grow.
Another factor that I personally think has a major effect is our abundance consciousness (or lack of it). The conditioning we have around money and the way we earn it (through things we love doing – or through hard work ???) may or may not support us in being successful in our endeavour.
Thank you so much for the ‘reality check’!

As far as blogging is concerned many newbies start blogging to get rich quickly but it’s a joke for me. I liked the example of boutique and food stores. People often visit food stores and boutiques because of quality products nobody likes to visit stores which provide low quality products. If you’d provide quality people will visit, just you have to work with patience and good things will happen.

I think when bloggers first start out they look to see how much those making money make. What perks do they get? Those bloggers are quick to answer because they are proud of their accomplishments. What question is forgotten is what they had to do to get there. Like you said, there is no quick fix formula. There is definitely a misperception among some people that blogging is easy and a great way to earn money. I don’t know anyone who is a successful blogger who has spent hours on it. Between networking, writing content, promoting content, etc … there is a lot to do. I didn’t believe that I could get rich overnight but I admit that I wasn’t quite as prepared for all the work to get noticed. I spend a lot of time networking with other bloggers and trying to build relationships with readers. The good thing is it’s a lot of fun but it is time-consuming. I was unfortunate in that I did make money from my first venture into online marketing. I say unfortunate in that it led me to a false sense of security and I started joining similar programs, naively thinking them to be sustainable.
I would not go any where near them these days and stick with sustainable businesses that have prospects for long term income. I realize that I have to put in time, effort and some money before I can expect to reap many rewards.
What surprises me is that many of my original contacts still keep going for the quick, easy, money and still fail. Some have given up completely, not willing change and do what it takes which is a shame.

Just yesterday a new post by a well known blogger popped up in my Feedly feed and it was “Become a Successful Blogger in Just Weeks!” That was bad enough but when I checked it out (couldn’t help myself) the blogger was pitching a paid course to set up a blog and promised success if you just follow her directions. Yes, Its one of my hot buttons too. I work with a lot of newbies and they insist that they were told that it takes a short time to make money on line. I tell them it is like playing the lotto. Maybe you will win, but look at the stats.
I tell them the reality of it and how it all starts with a blog, giving themselves the time it takes to put some meat in it. Meeting other people on their blogs or on social media, etc. You know the deal, you have been here a long time also.
So I tell them the truth and then if they do want to follow the methodology of marketing great..we can work together. If not, we are just not a good match!
No one can be a successful blogger in weeks. It is just not possible. They can however set their blogs up and have all the tools they need in weeks but then comes the work!

Hi Donna,
I’ve seen so many people jump from one thing to another trying to find that magic button, only to see them give up on their dreams and go back to whatever drove them to want to start online in first place.
We’ve all seen people claiming that they earned ex amount in 30 days and some of them probably have. What they fail to mention is the 3-5 years of study they had to put in to gain the knowledge, then work on building subscribers and generating relationships online before that 30 day period started.
I’ve bought products that promised the earth, opened them up and thought “what the hell are they talking about?” and if we can’t understand them how are we going to put them into practise?
It really does break my heart when I see people start, struggle and chuck it all in because they’ve been suckered into buying product after product because it’s what someone suggested in their email.
When it comes to buying something I ask myself: Do I NEED this NOW, or is it for the back burner? If I need it I’d look for it and if it’s for the back burner…. well lets just say the rings are full of previous items bought for that place and I haven’t done them yet.
My advice to others would be: Save your money there’s no magic button, invest in your time and how you apply yourself. Above all be patient and willing to learn and apply.
Great post Donna,

Yes I do agree that some people do flash around their 30 day success stories, but forget to mention the years it took them to get there.
A good leader will, and I’ve seen many that are honest and will tell you their story. I’ve studied under many of these folks and they are up front and honest. That’s what gives me the drive…their honesty.
I hope I could do the same for others just as they have done for me.
Oh yes, I know what you mean about purchasing some products. I too have things in my back burner but I eventually use them because I do stop and think about it and know it will be part of my “master plan” in time.
My heart goes out to those who come in with false promises and then either walk away and give up their dream, or worse, keep on spending their money without anyone to be beside them.

Well said Donna,
Its true that making money overnight with blogs is not that easy. If any one says making money online is easy, then I strongly oppose that statement. I personally make $100+ on an average in a month in spite of being online from 5+ years but I still know the struggle behind each and every penny my income contains. Initially I also thought making money online is easy but now I tell may be it works for some but not for all.
Its true that until and unless we don’t serve good meat, people won’t flock and even while we bring in posts we should do it out of our own personal experience but not of others experiences.
Nice facts Donna…

Hi Donna,
Honestly, making money online is a serious business. People taught it is damn easy, however, it works the same way as if you are running a live business with facilities, staffs, rented space e.t.c and most important is the time factor that needs to be invested on.
You have really pointed out important points worthy of note. All successful online bloggers and marketers I have come across all worked very hard for their level of success. Making money online is not magical.
Thanks for sharing…and its important for starters to just take note of this.

Donna, we get what we put out there. Most of us put little out there in the beginning because we lack experience, so money usually eludes us in the beginning.
A tipping point occurs down the road. All the value you shared begins flowing back to you in the form of money, or friends, or prospering ideas. Keep at it until that point.
Great post!

However, if they follow the plan..Boom there they go! The tipping point does come down the road. It is experiential learning. As long as we are enjoying it, yes, so many things come back to us.
I always say that more than money, I love the people I meet. It fascinates me that I can talk to anyone at any place in the world just from my living room couch. Hey, it doesn’t get better than that!

A long time ago I used to believe those people that it was possible to make quick money online. I really thought it was true, but over time I realized that it was all some type of hypes to sell their products.
I know for a fact now that no one can make such guarantee, because even what works for one person doesn’t necessarily work for everyone.

Agreed, Donna 🙂
But, for some reason, people still tend to fall prey into these schemes; they listen to their greed (or maybe want?) instead of thinking about it.
I did fall for it (fortunately, I didn’t spend much money on those schemes, and I always make sure I got a refund for my purchase, so it wasn’t too bad. Many of the systems I purchased do work, but they aren’t quick rich schemes, they require time and effort, unlike what the promo video claimed).
Even scamming people takes time and effort – no easy ways 😀
Anyways, thank you for sharing, Donna 🙂 Hope you had an enjoyable weekend!
Hi Jeevan,
I think people fall for the get rich quick allure because they are desperate to make money. Maybe they lost a job, or want to create a new one.
I’ve met so many people coming into this crazy internet world and I still am surprised of what people have told them. Especially in network marketing. OMG!!!
There is a huge learning curve to do that one correctly.

Hey Donna,
I’m embarrassed to even admit it but that’s what lured me to the internet in the first place. I was a sucker because I wanted out of corporate America so bad but I made a darn good living there. I needed something that would get me to that same level a lot quicker then me starting over from scratch. I was desperate for a change and those are the people they’re able to rope in so easily. We’re idiots!!!
Like every one else though I soon learned this hard lesson too. I had always been an “employee” so I had no idea what it actually took because trust me when I say, they weren’t helping you understand this at all.
Is it worth the time and effort? Well hell yeah it is so I do hope that the newbies will take your advice and know that this will be the most rewarding journey they ever take. Slow down and smell the roses all while you build an amazing business.

Here in the internet world, there is too much hype! Just give it to me straight is my motto, and at the beginning, I didn’t get that.
This is why as newbies are coming to me, I’m giving them the lowdown. What actually happens when you come into the internet world. I guess that’s my new mission in life. I love it!

Hi Donna,
Yes ma’am, we need to treat our online business as we would an offline business. As you mentioned in your video (which I loved by the way), if we were to have an offline business we wouldn’t just shut the doors and quit when the going got tough. It’s the same thing with an online business. It’s the mindset.
I’ll admit I had high hopes in making money sooner rather than later. But I also knew what it was going to take and didn’t to into it blindly.
Awesome advice Donna! Hope you’re having a great Monday. I’m so glad you found your furbaby!

So much great advice here Donna! There is no such thing a great rich quick or an overnight success. Blogging, just like anything worthwhile takes time, patience and commitment.
I listened to an excellent podcast with Pat Flynn this weekend talking about focus and shiny object syndrome. It’s so easy to get up in the next great idea, but the reward is actually in working one project until the end.
It’s easy to get distracted, so extremely important that we stay focused on what matters most and the steps it will take to meet (and even exceed) our goals.

Simple and Powerful message. We we look at the high attrition in many home-based businesses, I think this is one of the major problems out there. Unrealistic expectations because so many are yelling that you’ll make a fortune in just 30 days.
Better to think about your own business like a career change. There are going to be tons of things you need to go out and learn and grow into, and it won’t happen overnight. But get started and be flexible and persistant!
Absolutely Jon!
We do have to think of it as a career change. When taking the leap of doing business on line, it is just that…business!

Amen, Donna! It’s amazing to me how many headlines and products you see out there promise success fast, easy, quick… and six figures, of course. There also seems to be this common delusion that “if I can do it, so can you.” I hate to say it but NO YOU CAN’T… I mean, everyone has a different audience, a different style and personality and ability and drive. Some people will work for it and some won’t. Just because “I” or YOU (or anyone else) worked for it, doesn’t automatically guarantee someone else will achieve success. Plus we can hand out all the advice in the world but ultimately everyone needs to tailor that advice to their own needs and purpose. There’s no “one size fits all”.
Then you always have that one person who says “Yeah, but I did THIS and I made a ton of money…” So everyone flocks that way.
But there are always edge cases and how common is that, really? If it were so easy then what’s the excuse for people who are unemployed or struggling to pay the rent? Shouldn’t they just be doing the EASY and FAST thing? It’s so silly.
Anyway, I’m with you 100% on this. The whole world needs to get on board, too!
Carol Lynn recently posted..Social Media Marketing In 30 Minutes A Day
Thanks so much Carol Lynn,
Yes, it irks me when I see those sales pages promising that “If I can do it you can too” Yes, there is no such thing as one size fits all because we are all different and work in different ways.
Because of many people I have been encountering asking me how to blog, how to market etc. I feel like a broken record. But the FIRST thing I tell them is that it is a business and needs to be treated as one.
You are going to put time and energy into it plus you are going to need some start up cash!
When someone says they made money overnight, it may be true, but that’s like winning the lottery! lol.
Most “gurus” in the field of internet marketing will tell you all the time and energy and especially the mistakes they have done in order to show the fancy car, or the tacky big check!

Hi Donna,
I couldn’t agree more with you here 🙂
I’ve also heard so many people wanting to find quick ways to get rich, and some of them go to the other extremes and try ALL possible ways, even if they are all wrong, just to become rich. I wish they’d realize that Rome wasn’t built in a day!
Just as you mentioned, everything takes time and if you are patient and go the right way, you do achieve success at the end of the day eventually. Yes, for some people it might take a little more time than the others because of various reasons, but it does happen.
Speaking of myself, I think like most people I’ve tried out a few very early in my blogging career when one tends to come into the phase of listening to others, but I’m glad I learnt things fast and was quick to let go of such options. I think hard work and patience is what works best here, isn’t it?
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

Donna, great topic! I’ve already read that it takes 5 years for a small business to make money. It takes a lot of time, effort and some money. I’ve tried some out through the years and you are right on target. I’m going on 3+ years with an online business and the profits are small at this point. Too many people give up before the 5th year. I’ve tried other things over the years like Amway and Jafra, but I didn’t do them for more than a year or two.
Have a great week ahead Donna.

Thanks for your candid input! When I started my off line business, I was told that it would take two years to get ahead. As I went along, I kept pouring money into the business, and was blessed that I had a good enough salary I gave myself to live on.
But after those two years of working so hard, the business took off by itself and was pretty predictable…it it still is thank goodness.
Now when it comes to online business, it does take a longer time. Those of us who hang in there will eventually see our profits grow. We do need patience and persistence and we need to tell all those coming in not to expect to get rich quick!
