I’m often asked, how important is blogging for network marketers?
Well, if you’re a network marketer, you were most likely trained to go to your warm market, and then reach out gradually into the cold market. A typical cold market plan set forth is to make a goal of talking to 5 or 10 people a day.
Don’t worry about the results of that conversation, just focus on reaching out to a core number of people each day, and over time, results will occur.
So where are you taught to find those people you hope to recruit?
The answer is usually… “everywhere.”
You carry your business card to the grocery store, you go to a party and when asked what you do, you tell that person how great you are doing with your primary opportunity company.
What online strategies are you taught?
Many times you are given a blog site by your company. As you might expect, it’s geared toward promoting the company, the product and the opportunity.
Once you bring your business online, you are taught that you have a bizillion people to connect with all over the world. Oh boy! You won’t hardly know how to handle so many connections.
With your company blog all set up, you are blogging about your wonderful business because you love it so much and want everyone to get in on this great compensation plan, and enjoy some high quality products.
At the end of the day, though, you’re just not getting the results you thought you would.
So, what’s the problem?
Setting Up A Company Site or “Blog” Is Not Blogging
You see, company sites and company blogs are set up to encourage you to go out and get traffic.
That traffic gets exposed to what “the company” is all about.
Some visitors to “your” site or blog may be interested enough in the opportunity to actually sign up as representatives.
Here’s the problem.
Your company knows that the vast majority of it’s reps will drop out of the company after a relatively short time.
That means that you won’t be getting results. Worse yet, you don’t really know how to, you can’t keep up with auto-ship payments any more… or any one of a hundred other problems start to overwhelm you.
So what happens to all the traffic you pulled to your web sites while you were online?
The answer is, it will end up benefiting the company.
Sign-ups will join directly, or under some other rep, but when they do sign up long after you’re gone, the company will benefit from the efforts you made.
Meanwhile, even if you remain with the company, you’ll almost certainly find it’s a really tough thing to get people to your site, even tougher to get them to sign-up, and often just about impossible to get them to sign up as your personal downline.
You may be wonder why no one wants to read your blog, and why nobody signs up under you.
Part of your problem may be that you don’t know how to blog properly.
But even good, savvy bloggers struggle to use their blogs to give a major boost to their network marketing.
The problem in both instances is that “blogging” with a company site or blog is really not blogging at all.
What you do with most company sites is to talk endlessly about how great the company, the product and the opportunity is.
You’re given well written articles, very convincing statistics, stories and lots of glittery images and videos to bring the message home to your readers.
But this is not blogging. This is advertising.
All you accomplish with this approach is to advertise for your company. And the company is probably fine with this, even if you never sign up a single downline because advertising is all about branding and exposure. It’s not about directly converting leads into partners.
You are using your time and resources to advertise the company.
If you get leads fine. If you convert them, even better.
But even if none of that ever happens, you fulfill a tiny role in the company’s overall advertising campaign. You are getting eyeballs to the company’s message, and you’re giving your personal seal of approval which amounts to a testimonial for them.
But what do you get from this?
The answer, all too often, is “very little or nothing at all.”
But the problem is not that you’re blogging poorly. The problem is that you’re not blogging at all.
You’re advertising.
So, How Do I Start Blogging?
The whole purpose of blogging is to brand yourself as a leader… THE person that a prospect will want to team up with when they decide to join your primary opportunity.
So you want to ask the question, how do I start blogging?
And, the next question you’ll need answered is, how do I brand myself as a leader in my network company?
The answer to these questions is quite involved, but let me outline it for you briefly.
Your blog should be your own, not your company’s.
It is always better to brand yourself, than to promote the company you are representing. You may decide at a later date to either leave that company or even better, join some others too. Your brand will be attached to you, no matter where you go or what you do.
Branding yourself will encourage people to know, like and trust you first, your company second. Remember, people want to follow a leader, not just sign up for some faceless company. Your blog will make you the leader they’re looking for.
You will blog about the niche your company is in, but not about the company.
Your goal at this point should simply be to get people to follow you, and see you as an authority in your niche. Don’t worry about involving them in your particular opportunity at this stage of the game.
Always give top quality information to your readers. Give them information that will improve their lives, whether or not they ever learn a single thing about your primary opportunity.
If you feel absolutely compelled to talk about your company in your blog posts, do it VERY sparingly.
You can put up a sidebar banner promoting your company, but here is the secret sauce: Do a personal video giving some valuable information to capture a name and email address, BEFORE sending them to the company site.
This ensures that you build a list of people interested in pursuing your primary opportunity, and will further brand you as the go-to leader for when they’re ready to sign up.
The worst thing you can do is link directly to the company site from your sidebar banner, or anywhere else for that matter.
These are the bare essentials of blogging to promote your opportunity.
Remember, most importantly… set up your own personal blog. Do not use a company duplicated blog or site. That’s not blogging, it’s advertising. And it’s not promoting yourself, it’s promoting a company that you may or may not continue to represent in the future.
Social Media
Another problem I see so often with people trying to use blogging to promote their network marketing company is the way they interact with it on their social media sites.
The most common mistake I’m seeing, especially with new kids on the block, is what I call link dropping. These are the sort of social media statuses I see all the time, accompanied by a link to a company blog, site or even sign up page.
- I need 5 more people to join me in ….
- I am representing company x, and you should see what a great opportunity it is for you
- I just made $$$, here’s how you can too
These sorts of status updates or tweets or whatever, are always accompanied by the links I mentioned.
It’s also very common for bloggers to tag other people with their company promotion, or private message them on Facebook: “Hi….Can we talk?”
OMG.. Everyone knows they’re getting a sales pitch with those approaches. They’re not about to click through to your blog, and it is not the way to market your blog or your opportunity.
Network marketers use these bad blogging practices all the time because they don’t know any better, and because that is exactly what their uplines and leaders taught them to do.
Why?
Because their uplines and team leaders don’t know anything about blogging, only advertising. What they’re so often teaching you is little more than how to spam, be annoying, and drive traffic away from your blog.
Do You Pass It On To Your Downlines?
Let’s say you have the knowledge for blogging effectively and building relationships with people.
Let’s say you have the marketing savvy to entice people to actually ask you “what do you do?”
Let’s say, in other words, you know how to blog, and have built up a team in your primary business.
Now, you have to ask yourself, how will I ensure that my downline partners are also successful and productive?
Your downlines need you to be a good leader and teach them everything they need to know about the product, the compensation plan, but most importantly… network marketing and network marketing online. And blogging is the most effective method to teach them.
You may be such a great leader that you gather them together on a phone chat or a Google+ Hangout and make sure they are marketing correctly.
But a large part of this will be to teach them the power of blogging to build their own teams, just like you built yours. In other words, teach them to duplicate your success.
What are your downlines doing to blog effectively and build their downline business?
Are they using a company blog or a personal one, like you do?
What kind of training are you giving them to ensure they will blog effectively and not be spammy?
Even if you think your company provides decent training for blogging effectively, do you keep your eye out on your downlines, so you know they are doing it right? Hmmm…
Blogging Magic for Network Marketers
So, let’s get down to the nitty gritty.
You are a network marketer, you have a team and you want that team to grow successfully.
You spend a lot of time teaching them how to blog effectively because you know that there is simply no better way for them to build productive downline teams.
You are actually one of the very few network marketers who know how to leverage blogging to build powerful teams.
Although my readers know me best as a blogger, I’m also an online marketing consultant.
One of the groups I’ve worked with a lot, is network marketers.
It was from my work with network marketers that I developed my blogging training course called “Blogging Magic.”
It’s for bloggers of any type really, but network marketers use if to train their entire downline teams, and it’s been very effective for that.
“Blogging Magic” is also an affiliate product that you can sell to your downlines so it is a tailor made win-win situation for network marketing teams.
Get Blogging Magic Here
So, if you are a network marketer trying to build a power team of downlines, Blogging Magic just might be the training system you need for teaching them how to blog the right way.
In any case, to build a strong team, you really should be investing your efforts into leading them into the world of blogging.
By now, you know that when I say “blogging,” I’m not referring to the duplicate blogging systems handed out by the vast majority of networking companies, but the personal, individualized blogging that will create true leaders and producers on your team.
IMAGINE… If all your downlines were ethical, effective bloggers that knew all about how to brand themselves correctly. They not only will build relationships, but also will become recognized as people who others will know like and trust.
When you build a network marketing team filled with great leaders like yourself, you will stand out in the crowd no matter what primary company you represent.
Are you a network marketer?
Do you use blogging to build your network marketing organization?
Do you have a different business model that you use in conjunction with blogging?
I’d love to hear from you.

Hi Donna,
Awesome post. As I read through it, I kept thinking back to when I first started and remember so many “sponsors” teaching the wrong things to new people like I was. I had no idea I was being taught the wrong way; I had no idea about self-branding: I had no idea that using a company replicated site is “nothing” in the eyes of the search engines.
I would like to think that these days there are less people learning the hard way and will find people like you who will steer them in the right direction.
Thank you for everything.
Monna Ellithorpe recently posted..My Secret Weapon For Increased Traffic
Hi Monna,
When people are “sponsors” it is so different than having some other person teaching you. Sponsors are looking for you to make money for them and the company. So there won’t be much talk or any about “branding”
It can be learning the hard way but what is worse is that people are still doing it!

Donna, this will make a difference in all our lives!
Blogging is a long term art. You express your experiences in your own words. Write as you speak is the only way to allow us readers to see you as a real person. There are times that you share something you find helpful in your personal and business activities. Yet, so not self-promote on your blog.
People make huge mistakes with sharing fast money ideas and programs on their blogs. That makes it hard to write about anything worth value to use readers. We want more solutions to our everyday situations in life and business. You get this into your writing and all the readers will become registered. Then, you have a solid based of people to find a common interest one on one. That is how you do this right with blogging.
Thanks Donna for sharing so many unknown actions that only hurt us. I believe you have solutions to most of our daily challenges. That is always been reflected in your writing. I appreciate this most.

Hi William,
So true, blogging is a place where we give to others. People do make mistakes sharing those “get rich quick” schemes. It really gets them nowhere.
Blogging needs to be ethical and a place where we share information to others, and engage with them in our comment section. After a while, there is that know like and trust factor that kicks in and then we can offer a product/service in a polite way by a review or another method.
One that is open and not “buy me” It sure works well when we practice it.

Hi Aurelie,
I went to your blog to see what you were talking about.
I see lots of information and yes, it’s looking like a lot of sales-oriented content which is typical of company blogs. It’s really good content, and could easily stimulate more engagement by dropping the sales orientation and focusing more on list building.
I see you offer a free ebook, that’s good. The question is, who is seeing this blog site? For instance, if you have FB Page, you could write a FB post that says something like “get our free ebook today” and boost the post for a Custom Audience congruent with your company.
That’s just a tidbit. Lots of things you can do to make sure the right people are seeing your blog, joining your list, attending your webinar… etc. Then work the relationship deeper using things like your email newsletter, invitations to events, social media sharing, re-targeting mechanics and all the rest.
Once you’ve got the right traffic, and right amount of traffic going to your blog… I think you’d get a lot better engagement by (1) being less sales-oriented (2) having a clear “mission statement” or “about us” kind of thing and (3) use video! SHOW people who you are, and talk to them directly, face to face.
Good luck. Hope this helps bit. You’re doing a great job with your blog and are certainly on the right path.

Hi Donna,
I am not into network marketing but I take care of a blog for Customericare. I realized quite recently that our blog was pure advertising and not actually blogging. Now I am aiming for engagement rather than just shares and what some would call “vanity data”.
The thing is with us, the blog still needs to sell the product in the end and we can’t forget about that. However I believe your advice can be applied. We’ve seen way better results when actually engaging people rather than just selling. Sure, advertising makes the sales funnel a lot shorter but we pass on people that might not yet be ready to buy.
I feel like I’m now fighting with myself (yep, when I think about it, mainly myself) to believe and prove that a longer sales funnel with less aggressive marketing and a more relationship building approach can work. It’s hard when being a startup because we need sales quick but I believe it’s the way to go.

Hi Donna
Oh no… you gave me nightmares remembering the dreaded “3 foot rule” I was taught when I first started in Network Marketing.
Can you believe, I Googled to get the “correct” rule and got 861,000 results!! I think basically it was kind of “If you come within 3ft of me, you are a prospect for my MLM. Yukk.
I wish your course had been around when I was doing a blog for the network marketing company I was most successful with.
I got some of it right (self-hosted and stories, not just adverts) but I committed the cardinal sin and let the company retain my contact / prospect list instead of keeping it myself.
No surprises what happened…. company closed down taking my list with it, opened up in a similar business a few months later and started marketing to my list. Ouch. I did mange to earn a little from my blog, but if ONLY I had kept that list. Still, we live and learn, and I’m still surviving 🙂
Great post and one that should be widely read by network marketers.

Oh my gosh I hear this kind of story many times. Even now, as I write, people are STILL teaching this method. ((sigh))
I always tell my network marketing students to do a double opt in on their blogs. First a short video where they can capture someone’s email and then link to the product. Not only good for an email list of their own, but it brands them.
I’m a great believer in You.Inc. instead of a company blog. This happens time and time again and it is just not fair what these companies are doing. They tell you that you cannot capture emails, but not true. There are many ways to skin a cat!

Donna, what took you so long to write this post? I’ve ghost-blogged for network marketers and they had no idea how brilliantly their site was doing, which is such a shame. There are some network marketers who simply forget the “network” aspect of their marketing, they just push push push and don’t understand that they are not marketing but spamming.

Hi Sarah,
Thank goodness those people found YOU to ghost write their network marketers blogs. Yes, I did have to give this one a shout out because I’m seeing too many pushy posts.
Plus, some of my students come from that network marketing “brainwashing” place whereby they have that mindset that if they push they will get rich quick. OMG….If they are “coachable” they start turning their blogs around. If not, err… well….they will surely fizzle out one day and that is what I don’t want to see.
I really want to make it so clear that spamming will get you nowhere. One has to put in the time to learn marketing or go to you to do it for them!

Great advice! I do get annoyed with marketers that I’ll connect with on social media that I just met that will try selling to me right off the bat. Seriously can we make some time to get to know each other. LOL Blogging is essential to show expertise and personality. Donna- I never taught about the difference between advertising and blogging. I have two blog sites. One where I put up products so I guess that one is advertising. No one leaves comments on that site, but I do see them go from that site to the main site to buy. My other blog site I try to engage people and I am working on building relationships, so I guess that one is blogging. There is diffidently a difference between the two sites.

I came into online marketing well after I started blogging and always encouraged those who had a website to blog too. These were for web clients who owned offline businesses. Although they say the benefits I often ended up blogging for them because they said they couldn’t write or didn’t know what to talk about.
I found that selling affiliate or MLM type products is a whole different ball game but that a blog is still essential. I don’t want to be associated with one particular product or to constantly promote a website that belongs to someone else. I continue to encourage people to blog and will even set up sites for them but there’s still a resistance.
Recently I’ve been setting up team sites which downlines can promote to help them recruit. Those who want can guest post, but that’s not necessary if you add regular content yourself. The site becomes popular because your referrals are sending traffic there. Although the site might promote a particular thing the posts themselves are not promotional but helpful to your downline as well as potential recruits. I also prefer to join people who have their own team sites and that way I don’t have to set one up myself 🙂

Hi Sue,
Selling affiliate or MLM type products is a whole different game indeed. One must always follow that 80/20 rule whilst blogging. This is one thing that is weak in many of those blogs.
I know the feeling trying to get them to build their own sites, not their company’s. But I think over time they “get it” because the companies are drilling it into their heads the How Tos of getting numbers.
What a great thing you are doing setting up team sites that are not promotional. It is a tough job, but you are leading people in the proper direction Sue.

What a wonderful article, the problems you have pointed out are all the common ones you see that hold people back or cause them to fail. The teachings of virtually every network marketing company are create your list of your 200 warm leads and then hit the internet with your links.
Then the other one I have seen is the “I am looking for a company to join” and when you go look they are already in a company.
You are so right it is about branding yourself and adding value, not advertising.
Thanks for a very valuable article.

It is unfortunate that when people come into the blogging world and listen to the Network Marketing companies that are teaching this, they never gain any traction.
I was with some network marketing companies in the past, they told me to do this, but I never listened. It just wasn’t in me to behave that way.
I’m sure glad I branded myself then created an opt in on my side bar back then. The only thing I did wrong was not putting a video of me introducing the company. But…we learn as we grow!

It’s like when you meet someone in person. If all they want to do is talk about how much you need them and how great they are, you are immediately turned off. If, on the other hand, they just show you how valuable they are by engaging you and making you laugh, then you’ll want to be around them more.

Blogs are tools for helping people, not tools initially designed for getting. Network marketers try to get through blogging – most do as newbs or even bets – so they repel people with silly practices you outlined above on social sites. The smart-ness of this post Donna is rooted in you establishing yourself as a leader in NM, through branding you and through helping.
I think of blogs as content central. Networkers can brand and sell and inspire and help through their own, self-hosted blog. Help through blogging. Help other blogging network marketers.

I also like the part about looking out for your downline, unless the downline learn the right way of doing network marketing one is bound to fail because they do not know how to duplicate what you do. Hello Donna, What a great article my friend! I did have to learn the hard way, the first 16 months on my entrepreneurial journey, I promoted my company. Well I surely didn’t know any better also my mentor told me to model her to a T and I would become a millionaire. HUM??
Guess what? HEHE Nope it didn’t work and the company folded and I was left with a whole lot of nothing. Oh I shouldn’t really say that, this was a great lesson for me.
Yes we do need to brand ourselves, this is the perfect example HUH? You do need your own blog and yes you need to have a system in place for your team to follow.
It is not all that easy though, so many people say they want success, yet do not want to do the work that is necessary to get there,
Wow I could go on and on with this subject as it is what I deal with everyday.
I am going to go and take a look at your Blogging magic but it is late so I will out you on my schedule for first thing in the morning.

Hi Chery,
Oh boy have I heard that story over and over again by people coming into the blogging world telling them to follow to the T and then everything crashes. Ahhh Lesson well learned my friend.
Branding ourselves is the only way to go! If you are working with a team of people, they all come in with different objectives of success. It is pretty difficult when it comes to being responsible for all those “under” you and helping them to be successful.
It starts with their blog, and some don’t even have one up! Or…even worse, they have one and each and every post is about “the product” So it makes it difficult for those who are into Network Marketing to obtain that well needed leadership.
I did create “Blogging Magic” with this purpose in mind. Although great for the newbies as well as a seasoned blogger, it contains the most ethical ways to blog and to post on social media. It shows people not only how to blog effectively, but also helps a team leader coral their downlines so that they won’t be spamming all over the place lol.
Yes, by all means, give it a peek…it is an affiliate product so it makes it a win-win situation for all.
Many thanks Chery!

I use my blog to brand myself and also to provide value for my readers. When you build your brand, you are not attached to a specific company. So when someone want to join your business, you can provide them with the right opportunity that is the best for them.

Hi Donna,
You always write an amazing article which is worthy to follow.
There are many people who think that writing blog posts is blogging. But they don’t know that blogging contains many aspects. If you are going to become a marketer then you will be in need to have a blog for getting more customers.
It can be done by building relationships with people. Using social media will be beneficial.
Thanks for writing this blog post.
Hope you are having fun.

Hi Ravi,
Thanks for thinking my article is amazing lol!
You are right on target. Blogging has to have many components to it. Many marketers know this, We need to give information to others, but with our marketing in mind. It’s not a matter of just writing something, but writing to lead in to a product and/or service.
This is not to say we need to bombard people with what we want to sell, but instead drip feed our information to them in a helpful way, make good relationships with our readers, and then introduce them to what we want.
The only way I could describe this is being ethical. And yes, we must use social media in conjunction with our blogs.
Thanks so much,

Hi Donna
Companies directly don’t do blogging they just support advertising with their blog. Can anything any other revelation be better than this one.
Everywhere we see a herd instinct. Many great bloggers simply advise companies why should they start a blog but forget to mention the significance of personal branding either it is a personal blog or company’s blog. Faceless brand can work for a website but hardly for a blog.
That is why it is must that a businessperson first establish his personal brand and then start a blog. Obviously most of the businesspersons don’t have much time to do this just to support their business. They believe in outsourcing of every chores that needs personal care and more commitment than the one which could be expected from employees.
So the best option for them is to outsourcing the blogging component of their business to a blogger who already have an established personal brand. But the question is who make aware businesses the difference between advertising-based blog and long-term support blog for their business.
I think only the established personal brands can do this job more effectively. Much impressed to know the awesomeness of your product and it can be a good start for those who are still confused why they should start a blog either to just earn a few bucks or establish their personal brand and do blogging business with several giants after a little hard work.
Thanks for sharing a very informative post.
Mi Muba recently posted..9 types of interview blog post and how to create them
Hi Mi Muba,
You really are right about the “herd instinct.”
It’s such a great way to describe it.
Like you say, companies don’t really blog… they just create a lot of content that points back to promotion for their company products, and the business opportunity they can offer. Very, very little value.
When people join an MLM or similar type of company, they tend to “run with the herd” and simply use the “advertising” content they are given. They don’t attempt, and probably don’t know how, to brand themselves as a leader first and foremost.
Then when they start outsourcing everything, as you point out, they really lose their voice at the exact time they should be trying to establish their unique voice. That’s the only way to stand apart from the rest of the herd.
Thanks so much, Mi Muba, for your valuable comment.

Hello Donna:
Excellent post for Network Marketers. You bring up so many issues that I’m sure most new Network Marketers never thought of prior to signing up with a particular company.
The main takeaway for me is that when they use the replicated company site or company blog — they are promoting the company. If we go back to the quote, “People don’t buy for logical reasons. They buy for emotional reasons.” I’m thinking, while the new Network Marketer is out there working so hard to get attention and sign ups for their company, what is to stop potential sign-ups from going directly to the Network Marketing company? Why should they sign up with the newbie? How many replicated company sites are out there anyway?
Another thing that occurs to me is back a couple of decades ago, everything was pretty much corporate/or big business. When I was a realtor, I understood that legally I represented my broker and was to bring in sales, work leads, bring in listings — all for my broker. What set me apart though is I didn’t go with a huge brand like ReMax or Century 21. I knew my success would lie in going with an innovative broker that would let me take the reigns and “do it my way.” That way was branding “me.” It was “Real Estate with Deborah” not my broker. People got to know, like, and trust me. It was my videos they were watching, my blog they were reading.
The Network Marketer has to do the same thing! No one is going to “know, like, and trust them” if they are just pumping out the company look, feel, and content.
Hopefully many would-be-successful Network Marketers will read your post Donna!
Thank you for this great post. 🙂

Hi Deborah,
Thank you for adding so much flavor to this post by your awesome comment. Indeed, those replicated sites/and/or company sites only brand the company. So what if that company goes down the tubes? What if there is another opportunity one wants to get in on? It will only confuse the heck out of their followers.
Branding ourselves is the best way to go. Just like you did with Real Estate which, by the way is an excellent example, people came to you “Real Estate With Deborah” not the broker! You branded yourself well and were recognized by others.
The same goes here with this particular subject of Network Marketing. Some are frightened because the company tells them they can NEVER do anything else but use their company blog or the will be kicked out. But where there is a will there is a way. I’ve done it myself when I first came online with a Network Marketing company.
I had my own blog branding me and never wrote about the company I was in. But my opt-ins found out about that via my emails.
Thanks for stopping by my friend.

This is such smart advice Donna!. The direct sales company I used to work for \\\”forbid\\\” representatives from having their own blogs and if they set one up anyway and were caught they could get booted out if they didn\\\’t shut it down immediately. There\\\’s no question your advice is spot on when it comes to the value of building a business, and the best way to do that without wasting years learning all the ins and outs of working online is to find a good mentor.
Hi Marquita,
I was involved with a company like that, but set up my own blog anyway. I never could sell via their methods. It was just against my grain. I was selling offline, then when I came online, I branded myself, never talked about the company!
Every once in a while I would meet people on Facebook (before the days of Google+) and tell them about what I was doing. Sales were very sparse because the downlines didn’t know how to sell the way I was getting around it. So, after a while, I left 🙂

Hi Donna,
This is some really great advice and tips that you gave.
Although I’m not in the Network Marketing field, I do know that blogging is something that’s very needed no matter what niche you get involved in. The fact that it allows you to connect and build relationships with your readers/customers is an added bonus because it gets them to see your personality and connect more with you.
I’m guessing that’s how it’d help Network Marketers.
You made a point that’s worth paying close attention to, “Branding yourself will encourage people to know, like and trust you first, your company second. Remember, people want to follow a leader, not just sign up for some faceless company. Your blog will make you the leader they’re looking for.”
That’s important universally. Even if you’re a regular blogger, brands are very important to help you be a name in the industry and not just another faceless person.
This was a great post, Donna. And I do know a few friends in the Network Marketing field, and I’ll be sharing this with them definitely.
Have a great week.
– Andrew
Hi Andrew,
I have many friends and clients in the Network Marketing field. This is the reason why this post just had to be written. I see the mistakes, I want to just tell them, so I put it in a blog post.
I just cannot believe what they are still teaching out there…I don’t like to see those network marketers making money for the company by branding themselves as part of it, nor link dropping and all the other black hat marketing going on.
Having their own brand which can be in conjunction with their marketing product is the best way to go. If they are selling a weight loss product, then write about health, exercise, drinking water, etc. Then have an opt in on the side bar with their video introducing the product.
Easy Peasy!

Hey Donna,
It’s about time that someone talk about this subject! I’m glad it was you Donna! This information is vital if you’re a network marketer and want to build your business online.
When I was in network marketing, I didn’t know which way was up LOL…. and when I brought the business online, that didn’t even make it better! I was adding everybody that was breathing, and my main focus was promoting my company. So I was trying to convince as well as advertise as you mentioned. What I didn’t realize was that I was doing all the work for the company and not really for myself. That was a lesson that they never really taught.
But on a brighter side, I was reading blog after blog after blog about branding and how anyone should be blogging to brand themselves. Slowly but surely i started to catch on. The greatest indicator was when visitors would tell me that they like the information I was giving, but what exactly did I do. When this happens, that lets you know that you’re on the right track!
Thanks for the share Donna! I hope you’re having a great week!
Hi Sherman,
That is such a common problem bringing Network Marketing online when we first start….yes you get to not know which end is up! Only because the “trainings” are focused on talking to everyone that was breathing to promote your company lol.
And yes, you end up doing all that work for the company and not yourself. That’s why they didn’t want to teach you any other way he he.
Good to know that you caught on, branded yourself and got on the right track. It is so great when people give you feedback and you know you are on the right track. I sure agree!

Hi Donna,
That’s an awesome post for all network marketers. Thank you for taking the time to write such an important information.
I found out that so many business owners still don’t get the idea of how important and beneficial it is to have their own blog, which is the best tool to brand themselves and build relationships that will lead to the know, like and trust factor.
As you said, it is our home, our own piece of real estate, unlike the company’s website which is like a rental and once you are out of the company or the company close its doors, you are out without anything, no content and no brand. All they were doing, as you said, advertising for the company. I have been there and done that. Now, I left my Network Marketing company but I still have my blog and all its content which is branding me.
Thanks Donna for a great share as always. Have a great week ahead.
Be Blessed,
Neamat
Hi Neamat,
I too find many business owners that still don’t know the benefits of having their own blog to brand themselves with and build relationships with others. It defeats the know/like/trust factor indeed.
Most Network Marketing companies will advise people to brand the company, and not themselves. I see many doing this and this is why I just had to address this issue.
Aha…you have been there and done that Neamat! Thank you for sharing with us your experience.

Hi Donna,
Everything is so, so true here. Love it!
We should never forget that those companies (and I’ve learned that the hard way when I was in network marketing) work for themselves, not for the people.
As a matter of fact, what those companies do is spending most of their time telling their affiliates that they’re the best out there, but they’re all the same. They come and go too. So, it’s super duper important to build your own business, your own blog and not that of a company that’s not yours.
As you said, people join people, people learn how to trust people, not companies. Once you’ve dropped your company or your company dropped you, you’ll still be there and hopefully would have built a following of people who like and trust you.
I know of a guy who had put so much trust in his networking company that he disappeared shortly after the company sold, and that is very sad. Even though he was blogging the right way (he was promoting himself) he was too much into the company and didn’t put enough trust in him. So, that’s something anyone reading this should be watchful of.
As you build your business, put yourself forefront, middle and back, not the company and have a plan if the company disappears, so the you won’t disappear with it.
Great post, Donna 🙂

Hi Sylviane,
Many thanks for sharing your experience with Network Marketing. That poor guy that had so much trust i that company. That is the thing..he didn’t put enough trust in himself…and that is something that anyone who is reading this should be watchful of. Thank you so much for raising that point.
Once we build a business and are doing Network Marketing, the product must stay in the background 80? of the time. We can then write good content congruent with the business but never mentioning it.
10 to 20% of the time is when we can mention the company. It can be done by a review (that works very well) or sometimes just get down and personal and say to our readers “Did you ever know that I am part of company X”
There are many ways to do so, but always be mindful of your own branding.

Hi, Donna.
I’m Dennis and I am a link dropper. 😀
Kidding aside, I USED to be in the network marketing niche. I started around 18 years ago with a company called SkyBiz LOL.
I always recommend people to go to network marketing sales training. That’s one of the best/cheapest ways to learn how to sell and you get to practice and surround yourself with enthusiastic people.
Besides that everything is a free for all hence a lot of really bad practices spawns from them.
I could name drop at least 5 local network marketers that even offer online marketing services and SEO to other network marketers. What they offer is really bad SEO work and their marketing is just spamming and “link dropping” as you mentioned 🙂
On the other hand though, those that actually did the leg work, I’ve seen their blogs flourish from the ground up and it’s amazing to see their dedication and hard work bear fruit. I admire those people and their downlines probably did better work with their lead.
Dennis recently posted..Why Blogging Can Help Your SEO: A 110% Increase the Easy Way
Hi Dennis,
I’ve seen how many network marketing trainings can become a nightmare. I’ve also seen the flip side whereby there are white hat marketers and teach people correctly.
It starts with our blogs, our own real estate. I have many friends in the Network Marketing business that have done fantastic work and their blogs are top notch in the industry. Yes, it may have taken more time, but their brand precedes them.
It takes great leadership for network marketers to teach each and every downline how to practice good blogging habits and marketing. Those that do are dedicated, patient and have a good understanding of how things will work online.
Thanks for your input,

Hi Donna,
That sure was an insightful post 🙂
You know I am not into marketing, nor am I am network marketer, but I have such wonderful friends like you and a few others who are always there to teach me and so many others so much more about it that I might just become one, one fine day!! But you know I love building relationships, the one thing that has always worked for me, and perhaps you and so many of our blogging friend’s – that’s the reason we are such good friend’s and it’s been so many years now, isn’t it?
Yes, you are right about the blogging part that we actually advertise and not blog when we write about products or things related to our company or businesses, but I guess most bloggers do that to sell their products and services, though they should do that separately and not on their personal blogs.
Oh yes…link droppers are there ALL over, and the worst is when you become friends and in comes a message asking you to buy their product, or become their affiliate, and they get after you so bad till you have to be harsh and tell them that you are not interested.
Your product and videos are so awesome, and you make such a lovely pair with David – wish both of you lots of success – always.
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

Hi Harleena,
Relationship building is the key to whatever we are doing on line. Here, I talk to Network Marketers because some of them are either using a company blog and that will never brand them.
Others, will set up their blogs and just talk about the company they are with. But then there are the savvy ones who know how to market. Those that do have a good blogging status, make relationships, and market ethically.
They are the ones who need some help when working with their downlines. Sometimes it gets to be a time consuming job explaining to them how to blog effectively and that is one of the reasons I developed this product.
Although it has done wonders for newbie bloggers, I deem it important for network marketers to have as an extra tool in their toolbox to make things run efficiently.
Just when I thought folks knew not to link drop or push products, I keep seeing it happening. Sometimes I will Facebook Message someone explaining how this won’t work. (I have a reply all ready on a document on my desktop) It is written in a kind fashion.
But there are others who say yes thank you and STILL drop links or even worse, tag me! I’m out there and my goal is to help others. If they don’t want to take some advice, well, I just have to unfriend them.

Hi Donna,
You have given some great advice here how we can use our blogs to build our organizations in Network Marketing. I love your viewpoint of how important it is to have our own blogs and not rely on the blogs given to us by Network Marketing companies. We have way more flexibility if we own our own real estate and we are then able to easily change our niche and still maintain our blogs effectively because we are building our brand first and foremost.
I know one of my weak areas is creating videos. You make a great point that we should not send our readers straight to our affiliate link but instead use a video of ourselves to connect with them on a personal level. This is an area I have to work on very soon. What program are you currently using to create our videos?
Thanks for sharing so much vital information.

Hi Nathaniel,
So true…we need to have our own blog which is our own real estate if we are Network Marketers. It all comes down to branding ourselves.
Plus, many network marketers do have a few companies they work with, or may switch later down the line. Whatever the decision, at least having your own You.Inc. will always be yours to do whatever you please with.
Although you don’t like to use videos, you are not alone! Doing a short intro video to have people opt-in to your product/services is the way for folks to know who you are. It took me a while too Nathaniel in the beginning, but it is imperative that we do so.
As for your question: I use screenflow for mac. If you are on PC, you could use camtasia or
the free version of it from techsmith. If you have any other questions, give me a shout out on Facebook!
