Got Business Swag?

This post was most recently updated on July 30th, 2016

Got Business Swag

How about it… you got business swag?

Do you strut your swag?

Do you do what you gotta do, to build it?

You see, we all have swag.

One of the slang definitions of “swag” from the Online Slang Dictionary (dot com) is this:

The appearance of being very cool, smooth, looking good, dressing nice and often having lots of money to flash which draws them the attention of others. A way of carrying yourself like a star.

If you operate any kind of online business or blog, it is important to find a way of carrying yourself like a star.

Be who you are, but do it with swag.

Know the purpose of your business.  Have some kind of plan for where you are going with it.  Then, grow it on the wings of your own special swag.

There are so many business models online.

Each of us will resonate mostly with one particular type.

That model will give impetus to the way we want to grow our business.

It’s what we determine will suit who we really are.

You may be a blogger, or your focus could be on selling affiliate products, or growing a network marketing team.

Special: Do You Know The Steps To Take To Pump Up Your Blog? Find Out Here.

You may have already started to make your own digital products for the online marketplace.

Whether you are new to online business, or have been here for a while, an important thing to consider is your business swag… the way you represent yourself to others online.

We are all unique and your business comes down to You Incorporated.

That means that you need to attract those who resonate with “you”… not so much with your product or opportunity… but with “you.”

The Swag Challenge

Now, you may be thinking, why am I telling you all this?

In my last blog post, I had many comments from people who agreed that growing your business starts with your mindset.

Oh so true!

Others, I found, were stuck behind the obstacle of fear… fear of going beyond their comfort zone and trying new things.

Hmmm… Indeed, that is a hurdle we all have to clear in order to be successful.

So, dear readers, I want to challenge you right here and now to look at your business to determine the exact nature of your swag.

Look at how you are presenting yourself online.  Who do you look like to others?

This challenge might be a difficult one, even if you’re doing very well with your business.

We all need to be in touch with our swag at all times, even as it morphs and twists to accommodate our growing business.

Sometimes it takes on the nature of a total redefinition of who we are, and what services, products, content and value we can offer our readers and customers.

See Your Swag

Take a peek in the mirror.

Are you confident in yourself and what you’re doing?

Do project that confidence to others?

Or… are you a bit timid, afraid to let people get to know you, or hiding behind your company’s image or the products you promote?

Do you feel great when you put out a blog post?

Are you enthused about answering your readers’ comments?

Do you offer your best possible tips, and engage with your readers from your heart?

When you are on social media, do you dare share a bit about yourself?

Will you share pictures of what you are doing, and post updates about things going on in your life?

Are you making videos so people can really see who you are, what you look and sound like?

Do you see yourself standing proudly in the center your business?

Do you shout it out, even, with leaps and bounds of enthusiasm?

Are you willing to try something new to enhance your business, like paid advertising, creating a product, maybe some innovative marketing techniques?

Got Business Swag?

If you said yes to all of the above, then you’ve got your business swag on.

You know it, and everyone watching you does, too.

If you said no to some of these things, maybe it’s time to get your swag on.

Whirlwind Success "VIP CLUB"

So think of this.

If you are fearful of taking the next step with your business, what would be the worst thing that could happen?

Either…

You can try something, fail at it, do it over and over again until it works.

Or…

You can decide it’s not the approach you want to take, check it off your list and simply try something else.

You see, my friends, your journey never ends.

Your business is too important for the time and energy you put into it.

It doesn’t stagnate.

It grows.

It moves sideways and sometimes even turns upside down.

It’s forever shape shifting, when you do it right.

And it is up to you to change along with it.

A Case Study

So, how about this for a case in point?

If you didn’t know, I just opened up a second blog.

I call it Donna Merrill Buzz.

I just rolled out the grand opening with my Awesome Friend, Adrienne Smith. Now, she’s got swag!

I interviewed Adrienne for 15 minutes and even used the platform to affiliate her blogging course with a special “time limited” discount that she offered just for the occasion.

“The Buzz” is so much different than “The Tribe” (aka Donna Merrill Tribe, my main blog).

It developed from a decision I made to do a little shape shifting in my own business design.

You see, I simply love trying on new things! Shoes, hats and yes, even blogs.

So here’s what’s new…

“The Buzz” is where I’ll be showcasing all my video interviews with product creators and influencers in the online marketing world.

And there will always be pretty good deals there for you, when you see something that might help you grow your business.

But, hey, there’s a lot more to it than that.

It’s really about giving you a chance to meet some of the leaders in the online world, see who they are, and hear directly from them about what they’re up to.

These are all folks who, believe me, have got their business swag on.

You’re going to want to check it out for yourself.

Donna Merrill Buzz

Now tell me your story.

What’s your business swag looking like these days?

-Donna

    Hi Donna,

Awesome post. You know, I don’t think I knew I even had a “swag” to put out there but I guess I’m doing it. LOL

I love your new blog; Donna Merrill Buzz – Suits you perfect and we get to meet many new and different people we may not have heard of otherwise.

      Hi Monna,

Yes my friend you do have swag – you are a wonderful writer and you are doing well.

Glad you like my new blog. I search out some good products, either review or purchase them (usually I purchase them first) and then can bring to the table some things out there that can make our lives easier from marketing to blogging and then some.

So far, it has been so much fun to talk to other product creators from guru’s to the “little guy” and get to have others meet them with that virtual handshake of a 15 minute video.

    Donna,

I love the word “Swag” and the definition. There really is something to it. People have to believe in you, be drawn to you and feel they will gain a lot by joining you in your business ventures. We are creating our selves all the time, so it is best to consciously create the swag that we want to be known and recognized for.

Great post. Makes me feel like dancing and swaying through my business.

    Hey Donna,

My mentality has been “it’s good and I know I can do better”!

I don’t know if you call this swag, but I see myself as always improving whether others believe it or not. And the only way I see myself improving is because I’m putting out more content that my blog audience wants, appreciate, and can instantly apply for themselves.

But that’s what it’s all about right? Trading value for value. It always comes full circle when you do business like this. But I can tell you this, when I hear that what I wrote was helpful to my audience, I definitely pop my collar and not ashamed to admit it 😉 Now that’s swag!

Great post Donna! Have a good one!

Videos are such a wonderful way to beef up the Know, Like and trust factor. When we see someone behind their words, we tend to get a very sharp impression of who they really are.

This is why I just had to set up my second blog, so people can see what others are doing, not only by reading about it, but by meeting them up close and personal!

    Hi Donna,

Great post and a very interesting topic. No wonder why you’ve been working with Adrienne, she is awesome.

One of the hardest things for me is to be confident. Many times when I am either speaking or in a meeting, I know that the people I’m talking to know more about the topic than me, and it makes it really hard to be confident. I try to tell myself every single day that I’m good enough, and I don’t think that I’ll ever stop 🙂

    • Donna Merrill May 3, 2015 at 8:01 pm #

      Hi Jens

Oh my, not having confidence is one thing to work on. Long ago and far away I too had no confidence. I knew it would interfere with my life and business. I tried self help books, coaches, hypnotism, etc.

Finally I went for EMDR Rapid Eye Movement therapy. It reaches the subconscious very quickly and replaces the negative with positive. Bingo! I’m cured!

Confidence is so important and don’t ever think to yourself that the lack of it will never stop. Keep on trying!

    Hi Donna,

What a post? Its been about 10 minutes that I completed reading the post and there is one thing that is still ringing in my ears – “Swag”.

It is absolutely true that the success of a business starts with your mindset. Till the time you don’t get into the entrepreneurial mindset, you cannot be running a business. I still remember, one guy from the audience in one of the sessions that I was speaking at asking a question – “Why do businessmen always appear in suits? Ask anyone to picture a business and his attire will be a suit. Why so?”.. The rest of the audience laughed.

But the question had a lot in it. It was about the mindset. One of my co-speaker to who the question was asked said, “Businessmen appear in suits, because that gives them a professional mindset and the people seeing them, the feeling of seeing a businessman”.

It is that plain and simple. Your mindset not only impacts your success but also impacts the way other approach you.

Thanks for the informative post. Looks like I need to find my “Swag”…

      Hi DK,

Welcome to my blog. I like the way you shared the story of a businessman in a suit. It does give the notion that they are serious.

Indeed, success all starts with our mindset. We have to be clear and focused. We need to believe in what we do and have the confidence to get out there and just do it.

If, however we are second guessing ourselves, or are not confident, we need to work on those issues. Many great people have them, but as soon as they work on that, and gain the confidence they need, they get their Swag on!

I’ve seen your blog and you sure do have Swag!

    Hi Donna!

You must be a master at it because I can instantly recognize your writing / style without looking at the author. I’ve come across a few guest posts of yours in the past few months where I instantly think “That’s Donna!” which is pretty awesome.

With Help Start My Site I really try to just be myself and brand myself. This is the easiest way to do it my opinion… why take the effort to try to hold yourself to some preconceived image? That’s just silly and the real you will eventually shine through anyway.

Of course we’re not going to connect with everybody, so we’ve got to focus on connecting with the right people. The ones who aren’t meant to connect with us will leave on their own right?

The problem is if we don’t brand ourselves or bring out our business swag than we probably won’t connect with many people at all. I know this firsthand because with my earlier sites the focus was more on the brand rather than the person behind the brand, me. But you know… people connect with people more easily than they connect with brands. The sites did well in terms of traffic but the engagement rates were horrible and that’s far more important in my eyes.

See you over on Donna Merrill Buzz pretty soon!

      Hi James,

I do like blogs that brand themselves as people. It is easier to know who they are. Some bloggers brand themselves with some brand name and I forget who the heck I’m talking to lol.

Yes, people buy people at the end of the day so why not brand You.Inc? It is so much easier for people to connect with other people than brands.

We want to brand ourselves and have good engagement rates. It is easier with a person’s name than with a brand.

Authors here create “swag” for their book signings – keyrings, bookmarks etc and when I saw your post I thought “Genius! Hi Andrew,

Good to know you like that second blog of mine! My husband and I actually designed it ourselves. Ha..a big plunge for us lol.

Yes, we all have our business Swag, but we must identify it an not be fearful to show it.

    Hi Donna

    Business swag! Vow! Wonderful idea.

It reminds me the famous proverb that says: Live Like A King and Die Like A Soldier.

If someone says “I can do this” before doing a task it shows his attitude. If he says “only I can do this” so it shows his arrogance.

But swag is entirely different than both the above terms. The way you are doing your business must be your best way and you must be fully confident in it and ultimately it will reflect from your every business chore be it production, manufacturing or customer care.

Just visited your blog and found it awesome and also pointed a little problem for looking videos over there.

Starting the second blog means one has either fully failed in first one or fully successful and obviously you are in latter category of first fully succeeding in your first venture and then starting the second one. You are so lucky.

I have three blogs right now and all of them are moving consistently ahead and have not plan to start the fourth one but still in my plan to sell one of the three and then go for the fourth. It is not confirm but maybe in near future I may think about it.

Thanks a lot for sharing such a wonderful post that surely will help a lot more particularly to struggling entrepreneurs.

      Hi Mi,

I love that saying “live like a King, die like a soldier” I keep thinking about that and it is a wonderful one I thank you.

Thank you for the compliment. Yes, this blog is successful, so I wanted to create another whereby I am doing things quite different there. I know It is a little more work for me, but like anything else we do in our business plan, I deemed this one an important part of it.

I didn’t know you had 3 blogs. But knowing you, they are all part of your business productivity.

Sorry that video didn’t work for you because it was a Youtube one. 🙁

    Hi Donna,

I love the new blog and I can’t wait to watch the interview with Adrienne (I’ll make sure to find some time for it tonight).
You and Adrienne most definitely have swag and both of you managed to develop a unique brand. I’m alway impressed by how much you manage to get done. And now you opened a new blog! It’s inspiring me to do more and stop being afraid of experimenting with new content formats.

Your post really got me thinking about business swag. I’ve been following the Buffer blog closely lately and they have a really unique kind of swag. Not the shiny one. They ooze genuine kindness and that’s so rare in business. That’s also what I love about your blog. You always are genuinely interested in what readers think and comment.

Thanks for the great post 😀

      Hi Aurelie,

I am so delighted to know this post got you thinking of business swag. Oozing genuine kindness is the best kind of Swag I know.

We need to be here for people to educate, help, and especially serve them. When our mindset is on that and not on money, this is how we can connect so well with others.

I have a strong belief that “money always follows good deeds done” I’ve seen it work with my offline business where people thought I was crazy lol. But I had attracted loyal customers to this day and they still are calling for sessions.

I applied the same principle here online. We reap what we sow. 🙂

      Thanks for coming by,

Adrienne and I had a blast with the interview we did. I believe people need to meet the product creators. Those that don’t know her will get an up close and personal chance to see what she is all about and then we promote her product.

HA…I should interview my husband. He is such a quiet man, but when he does webinars and trainings I cannot shut him up….it’s a running joke between us lol.

    Hey Donna,

One thing I resonated the most with you here is that we are all a work in progress. We never know if we’ll be comfortable presenting ourselves one way or the other. There is only one way to find out though right!

I know that the fear factor is huge for most, it was for me too. We have that little voice in the back of our heads saying are you crazy! You can’t do this, no one will listen to you or even take you seriously. I’m glad I quieted all those voices or I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I think if you’re a marketer and aside from just doing consulting or freelance work that you should create your own product. Is it a scary thing to do? Heck yeah and there were many days I was in tears but I was bound and determined to accomplish this because we have to move through our fears in order to continue growing and expanding not only our business but ourselves.

Love the new blog and am eager to see who else you’ll be sharing with us. So happy to be your first guest and I hope everyone enjoys our little chat. It sure was fun.

Another awesome message here Donna and thank you so much for always just being true to yourself. That’s what we all need to do.

    Have a great week.

      Hi Adrienne,

Yes, we are all a work in progress. Inside of us and on the business end as well. There will always be change in our lives…we can count on that, but it is how we deal with it is another story.

We decide to take our business to a new level…oh boy is it scary, and then all those second guesses flood our minds. But as we put them “in the corner” and proceed truth be known, it is a risk. But who ever succeeded in anything without taking that risk.

When I’m marketing, I take a risk of spending money…I do have a budget, but have to follow it all day long to see what is working and what is not. People say I’m crazy to do that, but hey, if we don’t act upon something, we will never get anywhere. Yes, I’ve had many losses and bumps and bruises along the way, but it only teaches me how to do things better and I continue.

Even the new blog: David asked me if I could handle it all HA…It is a platform created to do business on. And somewhere I know doing that plus adding some ads to it will work out. I know I have to be prepared for tweaking, but I’m determined.

Yes, Adrienne “To thine own self be true” a great quote that I’ve lived by since I was a kid.

Thanks for being my guest on the Buzz

Wow, I’ve got to go see this interview you did with Adrienne. I’ve been a lot out of the loop in the blog sphere this past week, and certainly missed that.

Well, as for me, I’m old enough and been in personal development long enough to say that I’m very sure of myself at this time in my life. I am very forthcoming and absolutely don’t care of what other people think. So that’s my swag I guess 🙂

    Hi Don,

You have been the busy bee lately haven’t you? I’m so happy for you my friend. I like what you mentioned that “if you are not growing, then you are dying” So True!

When I look at my business I see the vision of a spider web. Me at the center and the many points of the web are different ways to promote business, but yet they are all connected. All leading to a central hub.

As a solopreneur, that’s how I see the many extended ways to do business. If someone doesn’t respond one way, they may respond to another.

I keep on going but all is connected!

    Thanks so much Don,

    Hi Donna,

I LOVE your swag! You keep it so real, genuine and truthful. You give people a reason to seek you out because you’re competent, friendly, and trustworthy.

I love that you’re growing and trying new things. That’s what’s it all about. I once heard, but I don’t remember where, if you’re not growing then you’re dying. There isn’t such a thing as stagnation because being stagnate only leads to your business dying.

I’m headed over in a bit to see your video with Adrienne. This was a working weekend in Maryland (I’ll put some pics up on social media later today) as I worked with a client on strategy building.

It was so much fun and while some things change, some things I love stay the same!!!!

I’m so excited for you and let me know if there is anything I can do out of my normal promotion for you to help out your endeavor.

    Well done Donna!!!

    Hi Donna,

That was a wonderful post indeed 🙂

Let me start by congratulating you on your second blog, and yes, I thoroughly enjoyed the wonderful interview with Adrienne – you sure made me laugh with both of you…lol…:)

Coming to this post, I still need to get the swag on on some of the things, though you know I am getting there. No problems with the blog posts, the blog, and everything else – it’s all good and going well, even with the ABC now. But the video’s is one aspect I still need to time to get down with. Perhaps later this year.

Thanks for sharing, and this wonderful reminder. Have a nice week ahead 🙂

      Hi Harleena,

I seen you on the Buzz and know that you laughed with us. Yep…when Adrienne and I get together there is a lot of laughter going on.

I know how well ABC is going, and there is never a problem with such wonderful blog posts at your site.

Videos do enhance a blog. I don’t do it ever time…sprinkle them in here and there.. but when I do, I get better results. A two minute video will go a long way.

While blog hopping, people don’t have much time, so when I do a video in a post, I tell them the length of time, keeping it short so they will click on it.

It does wonders for the KLT factor as well as raising the bar on Youtube.

      Hi Jenni,

I never thought in my wildest dreams I would open a new blog. But this particular one is quite different than this.

Doing 15 minute interviews with product creators and influencers in the internet world is a good way to have people meet others.

A live chat goes a long way when making a decision to purchase a product and that’s why I created this.

Terrific post and that image is SO YOU Donna! Congratulations on your new site and all of the things you have going on – how exciting!

Well you know me well enough not to be surprised that I have to first make the point that there is no such thing as one-size-fits-all swag because celebrating our uniqueness is what I’m all about. I definitely cultivate my own swag when it comes to the image I work to present – from my subscribers to the world at large, in fact I’m somewhat obsessive about it. That said, don’t expect to ever see my mug in videos and or anything but the occasional photos relating to my personal life.

As an author and an Introvert in an Extroverted world (eg: ‘Do you shout it out, even, with leaps and bounds of enthusiasm?’) I’ve intentionally crafted my work around being an evangelist for emotional resilience in a way that allows me to enjoy the lifestyle that is best suited for me, and to my way of thinking that’s what being an Solopreneur is all about.

Wishing you all the best with your new venture and thanks for the inspiration!

We all have our own swag and as long as we know it..we have to run with it. You being an introvert, is your swag, but many people know you, love you and trust you. You are always providing us with great inspiration.

I know you are an evangelist for emotional resilience and that is why I love coming to your blog. It always lifts my spirits or gives me something to think about and work on.

      Love your swag,

All I have to say is if you’re not confident and believe in what you’re doing, how are you subscriber, followers, and readers going to believe in it either?

Didn’t realize you made a second blog, I’ll have to check that out as well!

      • Donna Merrill May 2, 2015 at 11:56 am #

        Hi Ben,

Very true, If we don’t have confidence within ourselves and truly believe in what we are doing, no one would believe us either.

We are all unique and have something to offer others.

I just started that second blog so that people can meet people in a 15 minute interview. This will help them to decide if they want to purchase their products, follow them as influencers, and make a better connection.
