Piggy Back Blogging is an excellent and highly effective strategy for driving laser targeted traffic to your blog.
I’ve talked before about the many ways to get free traffic to your blog.
In this article I want to share a top tier strategy.
OK, so let’s dig into it.
When you were a child, did your parent ever put you on their back or shoulders and romp around?
It’s called “Piggy Back” a game most children love.
Not only are you getting a ride and having fun as you are high up in the air, but something else happens… you become one.
Two different people come together to make one very tall person.
Why am I telling you about this childhood game of “Piggy Back?”
No, I didn’t lose my mind, left only with long term memory, hehe.
I’m actually talking about blogging.
Special: Starting A New Blog? Start Here…
There are many ways to look taller and to get more attention to yourself by being a Piggy Back Blogger.
This is not a complicated strategy, but it is one that works.
It has worked for me over the years, and for many of my students who I’ve taught it to.
Piggy Back Blogging is not really about what you know, but to what degree you are willing to put it into action.
It is essentially about connecting to bloggers who have more authority than you within your niche.
It is all about sharing, on your blog itself, and also on social media sites.
So here are some examples of how this can work for you.
Piggy Back Blogging
1. When writing a blog post on one of your key niche topics, you can refer to an authority blogger’s site and link to it from within your article.
You might even share a quote from one of their blog posts, or maybe a video or infographic.
When you create an outbound link in this way, always notify the person whose work you are sharing.
Send them a link to the blog post you wrote.
Make sure, of course, that these mentions and outbound links are relevant to the topic you are writing about.
You readers will appreciate the quality information you share from other authorities, and the person you quote or share in some way, will appreciate that you are sending traffic his/her way.
In turn, they will be happy to send some traffic your way, or invite you to guest post or something else that will allow you to piggy bank on their authority and reputation.
Special: Starting A New Blog? Start Here…
If nothing else, if your mention is at all significant and complimentary, the person you’re quoting should be happy to share it on their social media sites.
This is good for them, and of course, it’s good for you.
2. Round Up Posts.
Gosh I haven’t done one in a while… but round up posts are a great way to list other bloggers, link out to them, and get your blog mentioned by the bloggers you mention along with many of their friends and followers.
The result is much “shouting out” of your blog post.
Now some people round up 100, 200 or even more blog posts in this way.
Here’s one from the Huffington Post that I was recently included in…
That’s a lot, but it sure makes for a great reference sheet that people use to connect to others in your niche, and it always results in a lot of good will.
Other round-up posts may consist of only 4 to 6 bloggers, but that allows them to go into a more lengthly description of the subject matter.
Either type of guest post can work to help you leverage the work, reputation and authority of other bloggers.
Do you see how this kind of piggy-backing can make you seem much taller as you climb on the shoulders of others in your niche?
3. Now lets get into those authority blogs that may not accept comments.
So what good are they to you?
Share articles from these blogs on your favorite social media site of course.
That gets you recognition from the author who is notified of your share, of course, if you can include their profile in your share.
Beyond just a simple share, you can even go the extra mile.
Go over to like the author’s Facebook page and like it, share their post on your own page, add them to your Google+ Circles, follow them on Twitter and so forth and so on.
Connect with multiple social sites, and shout out their blog article.
Now I’ve done this quite often myself.
The “trick” is to share it on your Facebook Page.
It will get noticed more there.
Special: Starting A New Blog? Let Me Help You
What you need to always do is to make sure it is within your niche.
If you are a a blogger who writes about weight loss, get authority articles and bloggers from that niche to share your posts.
Who knows, they may even want you to guest post for them one day, especially if you ask them to after you’ve been consistently sharing their articles on your social media sites for a few months.
Get to know the authorities and influencers within your niche and get on their shoulders.
Piggy Back… Get the picture?
4. I’ve said it many times, an I’ll say it again and again: Commenting is the top blogging strategy for building up the reputation of your blog.
It’s also the very best way to siphon traffic from influencers and drive them to your own blog.
When you comment on a list of authority bloggers, they may not visit your blog, but others who took notice of you will.
The way they’ll take notice of you is, of course, when you leave a high quality and helpful comment.
This strategy works, believe me.
But while it is extremely simple, many people simply do not stick to a DAILY, consistent work habit of visiting a certain number of blogs each day.
5. Whatever niche you are in… refer and/or link to other websites and any magazine-style articles they might post, or tips of the day or Q&A or FAQ or anything else that might be of interest to your readers.
You could share videos, podcasts, infographics or images.
Or you can simply refer to them in your blog post, and credit the author accordingly.
Say you are in the fashion niche.
You can subscribe to Women’s Wear Daily and other magazine sites, also known as ezines.
There are always top websites within any niche, even if there’s no associated blog.
You can write your Piggy-Back blog post about a specific article you have read, a particular video, etc., and credit the source site.
You readers love this because if it’s good information related to your niche… that’s what they’re looking for.
Oh Boy, will you look smart!
Of course the sites you mention will love your support and their readers will find you one way or another.
There are many ways to do this and these are only five “Piggy Back Blogging” techniques.
This is just a short post this week.
After my last blog that read like an ebook, I decided to give you a break this week he he he.
The strategies here, though, are extremely effective.
And they are things you can run with and start taking action on immediately.
So, now you have your call to action.
Please comment below and mention which of these things you’ve already done, and especially, which of these or other Piggy Back Blogging strategies you’ve been inspired to implement in your business.
I’d really will like to hear from you, and please, be sure to share this article on your social sites.

Hi Donna,
This is my first comment on your blog, and I enjoyed reading the post and going through the conversations in the comments. My firm recently started off with a strategy involving influencers, but I couldn’t find a name for it – until I read your post. Piggyback blogging is an extraordinarily apt word for many of the mutually beneficial interactions we have with other bloggers.
I’ll be reading more of your new posts when I have time, and hopefully will have something valuable to add to the conversation.

Hi Anad,
I’m sure that if you wanted to find influencers in any niche you can just Google that. But beware: you will have to look carefully to see if they are real influencers…the word gets tossed around a lot.
You will have to scan through what they are doing, how long, and reactions of others to them. You can find out a lot for your company from just doing a little work on checking out who’s who.
Thanks for visiting,

I am happy to read your post after a long time.:)
There is always something remarkable at your blog to read. The tips you have mentioned here are amazing. Beginners should follow the concept of blogging with the commenting.
Sometimes bloggers just restrict themselves to only writing. They should know that promotion of a blog post is much more important than just writing it.
Making new connections is always the key factor .

Hi Donna,
I agree, these are very effective piggy back blogging tips. I love a round up post but I also like the suggestion you shared about quoting our favorite blogger within our post and include a link back to their sight.
But you’re right about one thing – that commenting is still the way to go for a blogger to build his or her reputation.

This is an essential blogging strategy for getting traffic to your blog Donna,
Reaching out to bloggers with more traffic and influence really does help grow your blog.
I like how you mentioned roundup posts, which are great since you get a bunch of bigger bloggers that can help boost your traffic.
This is a great (but simple) strategy that can be used to build your reputation.
The key is that we must look to other bloggers when promoting our content, it can’t be done all by yourself! Reach out and connect! 🙂
All the best,
Benjamin
Hi Benjamin,
Indeed, we have to reach out to other bloggers first before we think of doing anything lol. Connecting is key and when we reach out, read and comment on someone’s blog, we share it on social media. There we make a much closer connection.

Hi, Donna,
You’ve got some great advice here. I’ve not used round-up posts on my blog but I don’t include examples of strategies and how-tos that I mention in a post from other bloggers to show how such strategies can work. I’m proud to say, I’ve been included in a few round-ups myself, a couple of which I’ve shared mention alongside you.
I think getting mentioned in round-ups is a really effective of getting your message out there. After all, as the saying goes: If you say it, it might be true. If other people say it about you, it is true.
Enjoyed this post, Donna. Thanks.

Hi Donna. Thank you for sharing some of your blogging strategies. I’ve done a few round-up posts, I always share things I like on Facebook and Twitter, and most of the blogs that I follow I found by blog hopping through the commenters on blogs like yours. It only takes a few times to start getting recognized and begin to build new friendships.
There is another piggy-pack blogging technique, the skyscraper technique, that I’ve been reading about on some other blogs. The idea there is to find a performing blog post from someone else then improve upon it on your own blog. For example, an influencer writes “5 Ways to Get More Visitors to Your Blog” so you write “10 Ways to Get More Visitors to Your Blog” and then do all of the things you said about notifying the original author, giving them source credit, and asking them to promote it.
I haven’t tried it myself, but they all say that it works very well.

I love the name “piggyback blogging”, Donna!
The concept is spot on. People are flattered when they are mentioned in an article and if the article is well written, they will share – I know I do.
On the flip side – if you are the one being mentioned as opposed to the one doing the mentioning, add the article to any automations that you use for social sharing – so you don’t forget to bring it out of the archives.
I think I am feeling inspired to do a round up post after reading this. 🙂

Hi Donna,
I apologize for the late visit. Been sick all week. Just making my rounds now.
I love this strategy – and I’ve noticed an increase in the amount of roundup posts out there. I personally find it’s a great way to network and market one another’s work in such a natural and authentic way.
That’s the key to all of it too. Being real about it.
The funny thing is, (as you well know) I’d finally crafted up one of my own small (but lengthy) roundup posts and I got more satisfaction out of writing that one than most of my normal posts because I was in such a state of gratitude putting it together while thinking of those I’d included. I can see why people enjoy doing this.
I’ve been included in a few as well and it’s such a nice way to meet others.
I don’t think I’m linking out to others enough, though, so it’s something to start doing more often.
Enjoy your weekend Donna. Sharing.

Good stuff. As you know, I do #1 often enough. I’ve never done #2. I refuse to even read blogs that are at #3. I love #4, which I show by commenting on as many blogs as I do.

I check in on CNN all the time but I figure they don’t need more publicity from me so I rarely link back to them. I’ll have to think about this one a bit more… 🙂

Now, when I started reading this, I thought a few days ago I carried my son on my shoulders but I was far from linking this to blogging. A perfect analogy here 😉
Ok Donna I want to put this in practice. You have shared 6 examples and here is the 7th:
1 – Do me a 300×250 banner about what Piggy blogging is.

That way, my readers for the next 30 days will have the chance to learn this very touching analogy.
