In response to the many requests I get about what to write, I’m sharing these “35 Best Types Of Blog Posts To Get Free Traffic.”
I started jotting down what I thought were the best types of blog posts, and then thought, why am I doing this when it’s probably already been done.
Sure enough, a quickly search led me to a recent posting on the topic from perhaps the top authority on the subject, Neil Patel.
The 7 or 8 ideas I had come up with were all covered in this article, plus lots more… like almost 30 more 🙂
Special: Start Your New Blog in 3 Easy Steps
So I’m going to send you over to Neil in a moment, but first for a bit of context, here.
Get Free Traffic
Bloggers don’t really care about writing the best blog posts, do they?
Well, of course they do.
They want to have a great blog, they want to create wonderful content for their lovely audience… but it goes deeper.
Bloggers, ultimately, want to get free traffic to their sites.
One of the very best ways… perhaps THE best way… to do that is by giving their readers the best types of blog posts.
I mean, you could buy Facebook ads, right?
Or Youtube ads or media ads, solo ads, and so on and so forth.
Two problems with that:
You need an advertising budget
You have to know what you’re doing.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
Why Pay For Cold Traffic?
I’ve tried some paid ads.
They work, kinda… but not nearly as well as most people will tell you In My Humble Opinion, and given my not so terribly extensive knowledge of pay per click advertising.
Plus, I was pretty surprised to see how fast those “little test ads” can add up to quite a bit of money.
But the biggest problem, for me, is that the end result… the traffic I did get from running paid ads… was a lower quality of traffic.
In other words, because my paid ads did not give me a chance to build any kind of relationship with people BEFORE they ever got to see my offer, they came into my business funnel as essentially cold traffic.
That means, they weren’t nearly as enthused to be on my email list, actually read my eBook or watch my video training… as the people who already knew me.
You see, when people already know you, they are “warm” and receptive to what you’re doing, what you’re offering, what you’re selling, even what you’re giving away.
But when they don’t know you from Adam (or Eve)…
Special: Start Your New Blog in 3 Easy Steps
Well, you see where I’m at with this.
I don’t need to be paying for traffic (number one), and I certainly don’t need to be paying for icy cold traffic (number 2).
How To Get Free Traffic
Okay, I’ve gone full circle, here.
Back to getting traffic that is high quality, warm, receptive and even eager (not just in the sales copy hot button word sense, but truly eager).
In my experience, that means free traffic.
It’s kind of funny that free traffic is better than paid since we always believe that “you get what you pay for.”
But that’s exactly how it plays out.
Now there is a trade off, of course.
Free traffic means that instead of spending money, you have to spend time.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
For bloggers, that means spending time writing the very best types of blog posts imaginable.
The better the quality of your blog posts, the more traffic you’ll get to them, but also, the warmer and more receptive they will be to eventually doing business with you in some way.

Hey Donna,
Great post here and I’m pretty frequent on Neil’s blog.
I have done quite of few different types of blog posts myself and I would say the best ones are the list post. It gives the visitor a definite, promising number of tips that are useful for them to instantly try after reading.
I’ve also have done paid advertising too, and yes you are right about this. The traffic you get come for one thing usually and don’t come back LOL.
Now I like to give Long Tail Pro a try for to attract more organic traffic. I’ve read many posts about this tools and I like to see if I’ll get the same results as paid advertising!
Thanks for sharing Donna! Have a great upcoming weekend!

I too like lists posts and I do need to implement them more myself lol. I only pay for advertising my blog post on Facebook when I boost it for five bucks. I don’t do it all the time, but whenever I do, I see an increase spike of readers and even opt-ins. Go figure???
I haven’t tried Long Tail Pro yet but anything that attracts organic traffic is a good thing.
Enjoy your weekend.

Hello Donna,
Good to read about all.
I never paid for traffic, and I always worked more on keyword research to get huge traffic from google search because this type of traffic converts the most.
I love lists posts, and how to guides. List posts has more advantages that they may get Featured snippet quickly in Google search, and the CTR gets increases to a great extent. Recently 10s of my blog posts got featured snippet, and traffic increased a lot due to increase in CTR.
Thanks for this post, Donna.
Have a great weekend.

Hi Donna,
Great post. I did a roundup on the same topic a few months ago where I asked 38 Blogging Experts to Share How To Increase Engagement And Social Shares.
My top 3 favorite type of blog posts are expert roundups, tips list, and tools list.
Through roundups, you get tons of free traffic, new subscribers, followers, and you get to connect with influencers. The secret is to come up with a unique question and target the participants well. You need real experts, not any newbie.
Tools lists are great. One of my favorite lists is a post that shares the best sites where you can get free images. This is evergreen content.
Thanks for sharing your favorite blogs with us!

Great list Neil and Donna! The posts I get the biggest response for (and have the most fun with!) are those where I challenge beliefs and attitudes, so I suppose that might fit in with advice and how to categories. Honestly, there is nothing I love more than when a reader tells me that something I’ve written has made them really think and maybe even question a long-held belief or attitude!

Wow Donna that was a lot of juicy meat. I can never get enough information on blog posting and driving traffic. I’m a Neil Patel fan. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Lydia,
I know it’s a “lot of juicy meat” … but here’s the thing.
When you get a LOT of info from a blog post like this, don’t get overwhelmed.
That will just make you say “wow, that’s a lot of great stuff, now I need to walk away and forget about it, rest my brain.”
Instead… find the ONE thing that is most likely to help you move your business forward and make a decision, right here and now, on the spot. Either you WILL put that one thing into action or you WON’T.
If you decide you WILL, then do it immediately. Don’t wait or procrastinate. It will never happen.
This doesn’t mean you should always put one thing into motion each time you read a blog or hear a podcast or whatever. Sometimes you need to choose the WON’T option. That’s fine. But don’t put a bunch of post-its in you mind and think “I’ll have to do some of these things one day.”
It confuses you and makes you feel overwhelmed, and that detracts from your ability to focus on building a great business.

Hi Donna,
Cool to see all types of posts doing well for Neil, Anil and the crew. Find what works. Stick with it. List type posts do well for me. Problem-themed posts do well too. Because most bloggers are having big-time problems and see to see ’em, spot’em and clear/correct them to move forward successfully.
I published a Huff Post article today on 4 glaring blogging probs I spotted after commenting on a ton of blogs I read yesterday. Big time errors cutting off bonds, repelling successful bloggers and self-sabotaging well-meaning bloggers so I highlighted thru a quick blog post to help my fellow bloggers. Hopefully readers got some gems with my guestie and I know readers reaped benefits from your post today.
Thanks for sharing Donna 🙂
Ryan
Hi Ryan,
There are just so many different types of blog posts you can use, it’s a great idea to do as you say… find what works for you and “stick with it.”
I think most bloggers create their “brand” by using only a few, sometimes only one posting type. But it’s also great to give your readers a variety, like the bloggers I featured in this article do, and like I know you’ve done to some degree too.

Hi Corinne,
Paid traffic can be great but you must know what you’re doing, you must have the budget, and #1… you must have a very good sales funnel in place so that you’re not wasting money sending people into a weak funnel that won’t convert.
If you don’t have all 3 of those things, then no doubt start putting your content marketing strategies in place by writing and start driving that free traffic your way.
