Did you think there was a magic formula, that if you followed it to a tee, you could become a successful blogger?
You won’t be surprised for me to tell you there is no such formula, will you?
First, let me bust that little bubble for you.
There is no magic formula you can follow, step by step, and expect to duplicate somebody else’s’ success.
But there’s good news, too.
It’s not really such a complicated thing to become a successful blogger.
I’ll show you right now:
3 Crazy Simple Ways To Become A Successful Blogger
Notice, I said “simple” … not “easy.”
So, the day to day stuff may be a bit of a chore, especially when you’ve got to learn something new like coding your WordPress widget or getting your video to autoplay when someone opens your landing page.
Yea, there’s technical stuff.
In fact, you’ll probably have to stare down new obstacles every day.
And because your head is spinning in so many different directions, you find yourself half way through one thing when you decide to start another.
You see, this whole business is simple IF you let it be.
Special: Start Your New Blog in 3 Easy Steps
It’s all a matter of whether or not you’ve got your head on straight, and your heart ready to follow.
So, let’s talk about getting your head on straight.
Meet Marquita Herald
Marquita Herald is a pro blogger that I had the pleasure of interviewing on the topic of breaking through those invisible boundaries and often very evident obstacles that stand between you and your blogging success.
Why don’t you start by listening to this short (20 minutes) interview I conducted with her…
Now you can see that Marquita has her head on straight.
She knows what she wants to accomplish, she plans her success, then implements it with skill and persistence.
She has run her own very successful blog for some time now.
It focuses on helping people stay focused on their goals for achievement, no matter what obstacles arise.
I’d like you to click the image below and visit Marquita on her blog, Emotionally Resilient Living.
3 Crazy Simple Ways To Become A Successful Blogger
Marquita talked about the fear of finishing what you start.
Well, she’s right on target with something that most bloggers experience from time to time.
It’s called a roadblock, an obstacle or a hurdle.
It’s a challenge.
You can either let yourself get stuck when you run up against these obstacles, or you can just put your head down and go right through them, or around, under or on top of them. Do it your way.
But get past them.
If you don’t you’ll never become a successful blogger.
Here are 3 ways to make sure you don’t “stay stuck.”
This simple plan of action will break through the obstacles you will run into.
3 Crazy Simple Ways To Become A Successful Blogger
1. Plan Goals You Can Reach
I know you’ve been told to “set goals.”
When you set goals that “reach for the stars” (another thing you’ve been told to do), though, you often set yourself up for failure before you even get started.
Why?
Because when you reach for the stars, are you really going to grab them? Really?
Sometimes.
Maybe 10% of the time, even, only because I’m being charitable.
Obviously you will fail 90% of the time.
I know…
- failure is good
- failure is a stepping stone to success
- failure means you’re one step closer
- embrace failure
- etc
Break The Failure Habit
But failure can also become habit forming.
Learn to break through obstacles consistently and effortlessly by simply getting in the habit of succeeding.
Flip the script.
Train yourself to succeed 90% of the time and only fail 10%.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
So, when you set goals for yourself, you can reach for stars with your 5-year plan or even 12-month plan if you want.
But then chunk your goal down into smaller, 30 day and 7 day sub-goals, or tasks or whatever you want to call them
Those MUST be attainable.
And they MUST be attainable according to strict deadlines.
So if you say that your “reach for the stars” goal is to have the best fashion blog on the face of the planet in 3 years, or 1 year… fine.
But your 7 day chunk must be something concrete and doable.
Something like, record a 3 minute video each day this week and post it to Instagram.
That’s not a 7 day job, but it’s ONE thing you can complete on schedule
Add other tasks to that one to fill up your 7 days, focusing always on your big goal of building the best fashion blog.
2. Persistence
Now, here comes the biggie.
Persistence.
Stick to your work schedule each and every day.
Don’t work 14 hours Monday, 3 on Tuesday, 8 on Wednesday, 1 on Thursday and 10 on Friday.
Whatever those hours add up to (I really don’t want to open my Calculator app right now)… divide it by 5.
That’s how many hours you need to work every single day.
When you do that, you will accomplish your step by step, day by day tasks and more importantly…
You will be training yourself to be successful because you keep succeeding at task after task, day after day.
You just don’t build failure into the equation.
Special: Start Your New Blog in 3 Easy Steps
It will happen from time to time… but 10% instead of 90%.
Create A Success Habit
This is how you establish the habit of
- completing things you start,
- moving steadily forward no matter what, and
- crossing the finish line.
Now you are developing yourself into a successful entrepreneur who is persistent, handles obstacles effortlessly instead of in a panic, and can easily put occasional failures into the context of a largely successful week, month, quarter and year.
Editor’s Note:
Once you start implementing your plan, do it every single day… without fail.
3. Focus on Your Audience, Not Yourself
The third thing appears to be the easiest, but you have no idea how many bloggers I work with who keep slipping off the curb on this one.
It’s so easy to say, “I blog for my audience,”
But do you?
Do you really?
Make it a habit to ask yourself, every time you offer an affiliate product, or how-to instruction… every time you tell a story on your blog… ask yourself how it all boils down to improving the lives of your readers.
If you can honestly say it does, then you’re on the right track, and you will certainly find the success you’re working so hard to achieve.
If you find, though, that a lot of what you’re doing is helping you, making your blog more popular, earning your commissions, getting you a lot of social media buzz or whatever… if you find that a lot of what you’re doing isn’t really addressing the concerns that your audience has… stop it!
Get back on track.

Hi Donna and Marquita,
what an awesome interview. I like the part about the barrier and break through .
I see many get stuck in this sometimes for years. Lucky are the ones who have not another choice then go through it Avoiding it making excuses does bring us forward. Once through ,the next time is easier and looking back ,there is much to learn.
Persistence is alway needed, not giving up.
Great interview ,Thank you for sharing your experiences.

I enjoyed the interview and Marquita is sure an inspiration. I have been reading her breaking the barrier series and she is just sharing so much insight.

Hi Donna,
How wonderful to see you interviewing one of my other favorite bloggers, other than you of course. Listening to the two of you talk about barriers, I had a thought about people who win an academy award. The kiss of death some refer to it as. Rather than boost the actor, they seem to hit a wall and lose all self-confidence.
Trying one time even if it scares you to death is great advice. I did some public speaking and just forced myself the first time. After that is was much easier. I am a regular reader of both of your blogs. Recently I thanked Marquita for an article she did on believing in yourself and took action with something I had wanted to do for some time. I hired a coach to help me with my business. I wonder if I had not read her article if I would have had the courage to do so.
Hi Kathryn,
Blogging is really an exercise in breaking through barriers every single day, isn’t it?
I’m glad you’ve found some help along the way from Marquita, she’s such a wonderful inspiration.
And I’m glad you took that big step forward to start working with a coach. That’s sooo important, and I just wish more people would do it early on instead of waiting until they’re bewildered and lost.
There’s no reason to reach that level of frustration if you just start working with someone who can quickly show you the right way to make things happen.
So many people resist doing that… just another barrier they have break through, I guess 🙂

Thank you, Ladies, awesome interview. Years ago I would do the stall behavior that Marquita mentions but now I feel that emotion coming and I push myself. Sort of like putting my hands on my hip and shaking my finger at myself. “no excuses lady, don’t you remember how bad it feels when you let things build up and you get a case of the what ifs?” Sometimes I let an associate remind me. Fear is a major blocker to success bottom line find a way. I get stuck sometimes on I have to look perfect when it comes to the video but if it isn’t that excuse it could be another. The feeling is so real and deadly to my business. Love the way you ladies shared how to push through it. Thanks, Marquita and Donna

All of these steps make perfect sense to me. Persistence is a big one, maybe the most important. Caring to help our readers really is the primary purpose that will keep up going back and writing on the blog. At least, that’s why I do it. Now, I don’t think I can please all my readers at once, so I don’t try. I try to mix my own experience and stories into something one other woman will identify with. I still wish I could make everyone satisfied with my blog but it’s an impossible task. Thanks, Donna for the interview. It’s great to meet you Marquita. Thanks for the awesome advice and inspiration from you both 🙂

Hi Donna,
Great post / interview.
You might not believe this (although I hope you will because I haven’t “cribbed”) but my NEXT blog post – scheduled for Sunday because I have visitors this weekend – is on:
1) The difference between simple and easy
2) Persistence – although I call it perseverance
I’ve noticed about myself that I’m good at starting, but less good at finishing. After a bit of self-analysis I came to the conclusion that’s because if it’s not “finished” it can still be work in progress, rather than a failure. Hmmm.
To try and break this habit I trashed 3 perfectly good blogs that just weren’t producing any returns, but were “weighing me down emotionally” because I wasn’t doing enough with them. It’s left me clearer to focus on my second income blog, which is the one I most enjoy.
Have a great weekend. I will 🙂 Two granddaughters visiting. Can’t wait!!
Joy – Blogging After Dark
Hi Joy,
I can start a million things too and not finish them. But I never toss them. Instead I keep them in a special folder on my desktop and can use it as “inspiration” for another day.
But usually I stick to my time management and get things finished because it is easier than stressing. I do stress if things are left undone. It “weighs me down emotionally”
I am so glad you got clear and can focus now.

Apart from a period in my blogging time, persistence hasn’t been a problem for me. Focus has and I’ve had to do a lot of work on that. It helps me to plan ahead and know what I’m going to post about next. I then jot down notes straight away if that next topic enters my mind so i can get on with the task in hand.
Interesting what you say about reducing the hours. Over the last couple of months I’ve had enforced breaks from the computer because of minor eye surgery. Instead of wandering the web and spending too much time on social media, I concentrated on one major task and it got done. I’d started it a while ago but not progressed with it.
Sue Bride recently posted..Instamate Review – Use Instagram On The Web from Your Computer
Hi Sue,
I love your story of how you were forced to focus on completing one major task.
You got it done because you couldn’t let your eyes “wander” all over the internet, and had to stay on task.
Not only did you get it done, but you got it done in far less time than you would have otherwise.
Great 🙂

Hey Donna,
One thing that a lot of people aren’t willing to do is embrace failure. But as you and me know, you must accept failure if you want to learn and grow to becoming a successful blogger.
We also want to keep our daily tasks simple! I like the fact that you mentioned that these steps are simple and not easy. Yes there going to be challenges and there are days that your tasks will be tedious, but you don’t have to over stress yourself with overdoing it.
Also I like that you added staying focus on your audience and not yourself. You may think that your topics are great, but if your audience doesn’t, then it won’t matter too much. You want to create content that’s going engage your audience and keep them coming back for more of your content!
Great post Donna! Have a great upcoming weekend!
Sherman Smith recently posted..What If You Can Only Blog Once A Month?
Hi Sherman,
Failure is a great lesson and one not to be repeated when we pay attention to it. And blogging isn’t easy at all. We do have to keep things simple and have a good time management in line that we follow.
Indeed, we have to focus on our readers and not ourselves. We can find that out in so many ways. Post a question on social media, but most of all keep our eyes and ears open to see where people are having trouble. Just write the answer.
Enjoy your weekend,

Hi Donna,
I agree with all three points. When we plan to do something big, we need a plan, we need to be consistent and most important to keep the person in mind for whom you are creating that stuff whether it is a blog or any other product.
I believe in making setting up and goal, then make a plan to complete that.

The best way to build a dedicated audience for any blog is to carefully and clearly define its target audience right from the start, and then create content that caters to that audience. It is also considered as important strategy for creating and publishing a successful blog is to develop content that isn’t readily available elsewhere in the blogosphere or on the web.

It is true that the aspiring entrepreneur must learn to be persistent, or risk becoming just another drop out.
That’s especially true in terms of finishing things we start.
People always complain that they get so overwhelmed working online because there are just so many different directions they can go.
They key to overcome being confused is to persistently stick to ONE thing until it’s been completed… even if it’s not as good as we want, even if it’s a “failure”. It’s so important to just finish something 100% before dashing off to the next thing. 100%, not 50, 72 or 90.

This was a great interview! The three things Marquita mentioned here are on point. We have to have a plan or we will be all over the place, getting nothing done.
We need to be persistent and work our schedule….you get what you put in so if you put in part time effort, you’ll get part time results.
And oh yeah, we have to foucs on our audience – period. There is nothing else to say about that. 🙂

Hi Donna and Marquita,
Ooh these are good points. And I love the one that “failure can become a habit” Ouch!
It is true – and not that it just becomes a habit but you can’t achieve your goals you stop taking them seriously.
I am now focusing on the measuring component of some of my goals instead.
So I decide I want to make something happen. I document my steps and if it doesn’t work out – I delve into why.
You can’t keep doing the same old thing and expect different results, right?
Apologies for typos – I’m on mobile. 🙂
Hi Neena,

Thank you so much for giving me the opportunity to chat with you Donna, and especially to share with your audience! I love the post you’ve wrapped around our interview and couldn’t agree more with your points, especially the emphasis on persistence.
One thing I’d like to share is that I’ve found that many people define persistence as doing the same thing over and over until you get your desired results. At face value that’s true, but you and I know persistence rarely means traveling in a straight line. If you’re working your business, every day you learn, you grow, you adjust the course a little, and then you keep on truck’n. It’s that fluidity and dynamic energy that carries us through to our destination. Thanks again!

Yes..we do grow and adjust to our course which is so exciting. And the best is that fluidity and energy to carry us through to our destination.
Beautiful!

Persistence is huge. Being persistent gets you past that 80% number that applies to projects, making less than $100 with your blog, and all these sticking points. Marquita makes awesome points but persistence sticks out for me, big time.
For the longest time I had severe self-sabotage beliefs within. I had to do energy-work to face, embrace and release these wicked energies. Most bloggers totally ignore facing these limiting beliefs because it’s highly unpleasant but goodness, if you focus on doing energy-work, you get through the terror-barriers that Bob Proctor talks of. It all happens in the mind, and when you do energy work, the lower energies dissolve and you grow like a weed, blogging-wise, like-wise.
With my old blog, I landed like 10 interviews on pretty low profile blogs. With my new blog I landed on Virgin, Forbes, Entrepreneur and Fox News. The difference? Doing TONS of energy work, meditating, crying, getting pissed, getting elated, icy cold showers, diving in, writing 126 eBooks, creating courses, and just feeling more and more whole and complete despite anything that happens around me, being kinda independent of circumstances/appearances.
So glad you had that crying session Donna because it helped you clear some lower energies which made you the dynamo we all love today 🙂

Hi Ryan,
There is a deep belief I have – so much so that my offline business is named after it and it is Mind over Mater. When you think of how powerful our minds are and start to learn how to use it, everything changes.
We let go of so many negatives that have piled up during our lifetime and then push through. When that is done we attract positive things.
Look what you have accomplished …. Better interviews and all those books and so much more. It’s the proof of the pudding!

Great post, both of you, and a really comprehensive list of things to help you to achieve success through blogging. I love writing, which is a good start! I can write for England, give me any topic and I can write about it, that’s an enormous help too. I think sometimes people start blogs with so much enthusiasm but at the very start they have little or no traffic, few if any comments, and all of a sudden they start to feel that it is a waste of their time, things aren’t working out, there is something else out there that will show better results, so they leave it, sometimes they close it down but mostly they just leave it. Then any visitors really don’t want to come back because clearly it is an inactive unloved blog. It takes, persistence, planning, and perseverance and you have to weather the stormy bits.
Enjoy the journey!
Hi Mandy,
It is sad, but most people who come onto the blogging world do leave and do so in a very short time. I do believe that they think it will be instant gratification. But what in our life really is?
It does take a lot of planning and persistence in order to become a good blogger. And to maintain visitors, we always need to think of Whats In It For Them?

Hi Donna,
I have read your suggestion about how to become a successful blogger. I have been blogging for 6 months here at gosview.com. In my blogging journey, I have read many awesome tips and guides. So I think your this guide one of them.
However, Thanks for sharing your idea.
Hi Palashtd,
Six months is a short time in the blogging world. Be prepared, the learning never stops but that’s the fun with it all.
Thank you so much for your kind compliment.

Hey Donna And Marquita,
While blogging, there are many other things to consider. I agree with your point to have an eye on the technical aspects of WordPress.
Thinking about your readers is the most important thing to do. Consistency is the key to grow your blog.
Such an interesting conversation.
