“You Are What You Tweet”… That’s who your customers and clients will come to know.
In other words, your tweets will shape and form your “personal brand.”
So, you want to make sure that your tweets portray exactly the kind of personal brand that you want it to.
Special: Start Your Blog Today: 3 Easy Steps
The Soap Box Effect
Every time you stand before a microphone in a crowded room, people listen to what you have to say.
I call this the “soap box effect.”
It makes you stand out in a crowd, for sure, but that can either help or hurt you.
You see, it’s one thing to stand on a soap box or grab a mic and make people listen to you.
But it’s another thing to make your “speech” count.
If you’re a blogger, you want that to be presenting yourself as someone helpful and positive, and someone who people will want to know more about
The Twitter Truth
It boils down to this.
Or at least your world… your personal followers.
But of course, your tweets can also be seen by your followers’ followers.
So your world can get kind of big, pretty fast.
So… don’t be too casual about what you tweet.
Don’t get lackadaisical.
Your brand and your image are at stake, every single time you tweet.
You Are What You Tweet
To help you build better Twitter practices, I’ve spoken with world-renowned author and speaker, Germany Kent.
Also known as the “Hope Guru,” Germany has released her latest book, “You Are What You Tweet.”
In this book, she not only tells you why Twitter is such an important social and business tool to use, but she shows you exactly how to use it in the most beneficial way.
And, here’s what I love…
She has written it in a workbook style with tons of checklists.
I love checklists 🙂
Special: Start Your Blog Today: 3 Easy Steps
They give you a thumbnail recap of what’s most important so that when you finish reading a chapter, you can just find it all condensed into a short list of actionable tips or resources.
Just by reviewing the checklists, you get a quick recall of the major points made throughout the chapter.
Now here’s the thing about Germany Kent…
She is such an awesome person.
She’s so sincere and caring, and her loving nature just shined bright and clear when I talked to her.
She’s a wonderful author, but even more…
just a wonderful person.
I so much enjoyed getting to hang with her for a little while.
About The Author: Germany Kent
Why Twitter?
So what’s so special about Twitter?
Why is it so important to deploy Twitter to portray yourself as the positive and helpful person that folks will want to follow?
Now, if you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you might remember that I’ve taken some shots at Twitter from time to time.
Things like…
- “I don’t get it,” or…
- “how is a rolling ticker tape of 140 character statements supposed to help me build my business?”
- Part of this thinking was that I just really didn’t like using Twitter.
- I didn’t know what to say, how to say it, or even who I was really saying it to.
- I was like, why bother?
And truthfully, I didn’t bother…
for a long time.
But all that’s happily changed 🙂
I’ve been using it a lot over the last 3 or 4 months and now… I’m a believer!
Here’s the thing.
Of all the social media platforms you can be using, Twitter is probably the one that reaches more people and in a more personal way than all the others.
That, actually, is the point I never could “get.”
But, now, I do.
Less Is Best
You see, on Twitter, you’re able to use short snappy sentences (like that illiteration, eh?) that really get to the heart of who you are.
People like the “old me” think that 140 characters is kind of a silly way to communicate with people.
But don’t be like the “old me.”
Twitter has has become probably the most powerful platform on which to build trust, and formulate a strong personal brand.
And really, that’s the most important part of building a successful blog or online business.
But you can’t do it with long diatribes that bore people to death.
They just don’t have time to read through long articles, or listen to hour long videos, or attend long webinars… not anymore.
But when you connect with people on Twitter… within just a few words, they get the essence of what you are all about.
Because your tweets are on an endless loop, you get to be constantly and continually in front of your audience.
Now, that’s a soap box.
Special: Start Your Blog Today: 3 Easy Steps
You’ve always got the microphone in your hand.
And you always have an audience.
You get to paint a picture of yourself that is composed of tiny little pixels.
They make little sense in isolation.
But as they begin to bleed together, the full picture, the portrait of “you” begins to form.
Your steady stream of tweets are the pixels.
Your personal brand is the portrait.
I’ve come to see that Twitter really is an unparalleled method for connecting with your audience, your readers, your prospects and your customers.
How To Put Twitter To Work For You
In “You Are What You Tweet,” Germany Kent shows you exactly how to use this powerful social media platform to build your personal brand.
Within its own universe, Twitter allows you to get more mileage from your tweeting strategy than you could from a high-paid public relations firm.
After all, a public relations firm is simply a team of professionals dedicated to putting your message “out there.”
But, with Twitter… you don’t need a public relations team.
You just need to develop a proper tweeting strategy, and you can do it all yourself.
You can easily be your own public relations firm.
In fact, you’ll probably be doing what the public relations firm would do… develop a strong and effective tweeting strategy.
Twitter Etiquette
One of the problems that bloggers and online marketers have in developing their Twitter strategy, is it they simply don’t know how to behave or what to say.
Questions arise…
- What is it the people want to see?
- What can you write in 140 characters?
- What are the do’s and don’ts?
- “How” should you act… is there a Twitter etiquette?
Germany answers all these questions, and shows you exactly how to resolve every Twitter issue that arises.
She shows you what to do, what not to do, how to act and how not to.
While Twitter can make you a blogging star or marketing sensation overnight, it can also bury you just as fast.
My Interview With Germany Kent
I think you will get much better sense of precisely how to use Twitter most effectively when you get it straight from Germany, herself.
Here is my short interview with Germany Kent on the topic of her new book,”You Are What You Tweet” …
So, now I’d like to hear from you.
Do you use Twitter and your business?
Do you use it in your life?
Do you really know how best to leverage Twitter?
I’d totally love to read your comment, so just drop a note in the comment section below.

Subject that is near my heart. I used to invest a considerable measure of energy in Twitter… Don’t have that extravagance any longer. Totally genuine that you are what you tweet. It’s an incredible stage to interface with clients and others in your industry on an individual level. I’m happy you have begun utilizing it and “get” Twitter now. Drawing in leads and clients 1-on-1 on Twitter is an ideal approach to construct your system and increase your range to individuals who really think about what you say and will impart it to their own systems.

Thank you Donna and Germany, I love Twitter but it was years before I felt that way. I just didn’t get it. Once I took the time to appreciate its differences from Facebook and learned the etiquette it made since. Also I like that Twitter has so many free tools that can help you with data research.

I’m so glad to know and discover, I definitely wasn’t the only one,

in 140 characters or less!LOL!
And even though I marveled at others ability to mater twitter, I
just thought, it must be a highly specialized form of social
media marketing, I just can’t seem to get a handle on.
But like you, I too have evolved, and come to realize, it definitely makes sense, for

Hi Donna and Germany,
Twitter Addict here 😉 Just spent another 30 minutes on the platform, thanking my retweeters 1-1 over the past 7 hours and retweeting other travel themed tweets.
Love your guys take: we really DO tweet the world every time we tweet because of the volume effect of our followings. I may have 48,000 followers – about – but the followers of those followers makes up a huge number. We do hop up on a sop box when we tweet, every single time. Which means I’ve stood on about 441,000 soap boxes LOL.
Awesome post guys.

Hi Donna. Great post! I really love Twitter. I’ve stirred up more than one controversy, but that’s okay because it goes along with my current niche. I don’t have to reign myself in so much, and I love it. One place I do draw the line at is calling people names. Hey, I don’t care if you disagree with me. We don’t have to agree, but you don’t need to call me names. It’s amazing how people think they know all about you from one comment. But Twitter is so fun that I keep on keepin’ on. Thanks for sharing this information.

Hi DeeDee,
That’s the whole thing….Twitter IS fun and as long as we view it that way we can use it for our benefit of business, or just relate to others.
When it comes to name calling, that’s where we have to draw the line no matter what social platform we are in. It kind of a good clean sweep of negativity.

Hi Donna
Thanks for this interesting post about Twitter.
I have to confess I haven’t really done much with Twitter – because of the speed of it, even though I know some very good marketers (and now you too) who swear by it.
Recently I’ve been spending much more time on Facebook marketing than I used to, and that seems to be sucking in all of my time. Perhaps I’d better reduce the Facebook time and concentrate more on Twitter.
Thanks for the recommendation.

Hi Donna,
That was a great interview and it was very timely for me. I have been focused on my branding but I am also a part of many groups where we share each other’s social media content. Most of that content that I am supposed to share in no way is in alignment with my brand and what it stands for. So I have been thinking of leaving those groups, such as Triberr.
Interestingly, I had been treating Twitter as my ‘junk’ social media account and that is where I have been sharing just about anything from people. My thought process was that I don’t even care about Twitter so, who cares? But anyone looking at my Twitter account would not know the info that I just shared here; consequently, that content that I shared could hurt me.
Thanks

Hi Rachel,
I was in Triberr too a while back and it didn’t give me the substance I needed for my blog/business. I did have segmented groups, but it was like sharing on steroids. I rather have quality than quantity. But that was just my experience. I know it works well for others.
Twitter being your “junk” social media account is so familiar to me. I did have that love/hate thing going on a while back. But lately using it better and having a plan just like any other social media account is working. After I read Germany’s book, I have been so enlightened.

Hi Donna,
Awesome interview and post. LOVED it. The blog post is absolutely great and very “conversational”, in your characteristic style. And I absolutely loved the interview. It was what you were mentioning recently about a “virtual handshake”. We read content on a blog post. And then there is also this possibility at times to see or listen to the persons behind it. Awesome.
In the interview, what was evident to me that two great and very articulate ladies were having a very valuable conversation with each other – for the benefit of their readers and followers. Can’t wait to get my hands on the book. And I loved it that you were so upfront in saying that you are in no way affiliated to Germany or her book. While there is nothing wrong in being promoting an affiliate offer, it is awesome just state how things are, too. I really liked that.
All this is of little consequence without application so here comes: After hearing the interview and reading your post, the FIRST thing I did is tweak a few things in my Twitter profile (hahaha, I seriously did). There wasn’t much to do, but I still used whatever I took from the post/interview.
I think the post and the interview (especially) is full of nuggets. Must read!
Be blessed,

Hey Donna,
It is really very interesting interview with Germany Kent and many significant tips comes out by this interview. Twitter is considered as an incredible weapon for blogging, it helps our blog to get popularity and it also help to thrive healthy relationship with our audience throughout world. Twitter is best platform in social media where we can share our videos as well as content to maximize our traffic and productivity level. Twitter has the potential to drive traffic to out blog, get more eye-balls on our content, promote our products/services and increase our influence on the social web.
If we’re managing the Twitter account for a brand where various people have access to the Twitter account, it’s good practice to tag individual tweets so people know who they are talking to. Sharing other people’s content and tagging them is a sure-fire way to get on their radar. This is an important step in cultivating mutually beneficial relationships. Eventually, thanks for sharing your best experience with us.

Hi Donna
Very informative post on Twitter with a lot of unique points to ponder for using it to its maximum potential.
The problem is, people take it just like other social media accounts where personal and business objectives could easily be achieved equally while on Twitter a very clear purpose must lead you to fully exploit it.
Most of the global leaders use it and it is actually the thought exchange center where you won’t face dearth of any kind of ideas.
I was earlier not that much aware of its power but once I read somewhere that news of Obama’s first win was broken by CNN and Twitter quoted it while its second time win was first broke by Obama himself through none other than his Twitter account. Since then I revised my strategy to focus it more for more better results.
It is good know about Germany and her ebook here though I saw her several on different social media.
Nicely done interview and I like how precisely you delivered more in lesser time.
Many thanks for sharing.

Today I watched the Trump News Conference. I will say this, people were very creative on Twitter expressing themselves very cleverly with just 140 characters! If we only get 140 characters at a time to get our brand message out to the world, today, they proved it to me! There is power there and people are watching!
I think I’m still back where you were 4 months ago, Donna. I have to figure out how to use this power to my benefit. It’s not readily discernable.

Perfect timing! I basically turned my back on Twitter last year – oh, I shared things but rarely ever spent time there and certainly didn’t do anything to grow my following. After some soul-searching, I’ve come to the conclusion I got in my own way. A couple of years ago I was emersed in all things to do with independent book publishing, writer groups of all shapes and sizes on every platform. building an author brand, blah, blah, blah. Of course, everyone wanted to follow each other and now I’ve ended up with a sea of book promotions along with tips, articles and all things related to book marketing and publishing!
So, now that I get that there is value growing with Twitter, and the kind of corner I’ve painted myself into, I’m going to have to PURGE the list before I can begin building again. But after listening to your interview (which I downloaded to listen to again) I’m going to take some time to get strategic about who I want to follow so I don’t make the same blooper. As I said, perfect timing!

Hi Donna,
I was like you were a few years back also, what the hell is the point in this stupid network.
I would post tweet after tweet, I actually thought people were not seeing my tweets.
#RAGING
Once it all starts to fall into place though, you start to get it.
The truth is you don’t need to get it straight away.
Follow people that are truly interested in what you tweet, follow people that are in your network and lastly follow your friends and family.
Your friends and family will help your Twitter profile look engaged. Let’s face it, you are their baby, they will do whatever they can to help you. If that’s retweeting or liking something, you can bet they won’t mind.
Next is your network, people that you have helped and that have helped you with your business. These people will normally have a bigger following but this is not always the case.
You will have to be a bit more clever to get them to help you out but it’s not hard. Build a relationship and give without looking to receive!
They will help you!
When these wheels start turning you will start to see more natural growth, all that’s left to do is keep putting out awesome Tweets.
Thanks Donna for this 🙂
