It’s funny that my last post on this blog was about how struggling bloggers live in fear.
When Ryan Biddulph wrote this guest post about the “1 Terribly Crippling Mistake Made by Struggling Bloggers,” I thought… kismet 🙂
Well, actually it’s not surprising that Ryan and I both focus on struggling bloggers.
We both see so many of them, every day.
If you’re struggling in your business, Ryan’s article below, could be your turning point.
So, I’m turning the rest of this post over to him…
1 Terribly Crippling Mistake Made by Struggling Bloggers
by Ryan Biddulph
His pecs were bigger than Texas.
I was impressed.
Considering I was a 200 pound, somewhat bloated, but jacked up slab of muscle.
The Scene: Kean University, 1997.
I was heavily into bodybuilding in college.
I hit the gym 5-6 days a week.
This particular day I saw a man whose physique resembled that of a Marvel Comic super hero.
As Charles Atlas strutted his way across the gym, he came across 2 skinny kids on the baseball team doing dumbbell shoulder presses.
The Muscle Man advised the skinny minnies to twist the DB at the top of the movement to increase strength and add mass to their shoulders.
The lil’s dropped their dumbbells.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
Looked at the bodybuilder.
And said: “My coach said to not twist at the top.”
The bodybuilder responded: “Does your coach look like me?”
The skinny ones looked at each other, shrugged, moved their heads from left and to right and said “No.”
1 Terribly Crippling Mistake Made by Struggling Bloggers
I see the same thing happen in the blogging tips niche.
Struggling, failing bloggers blindly follow advice from folks who are specialists in fields *not* specifically related to blogging.
This crippling mistake leads to endless blogging failure.
The skinny baseball players wanted increased strength and mass to add pop to their swing.
Their baseball coach knows how to break down the mechanics of the swing.
But he doesn’t know how to add mass and strength like the jacked-up bodybuilder knows how to add mass and strength.
Even worse…
Some of these struggling bloggers follow advice from fellow struggling bloggers.
Ya know; the struggling bloggers who ask on forums how to make money through blogging, only to field answers from other obviously struggling bloggers who advise them to post some Adsense to “make good money with blogging.”
But wait, even worse…
And this is about as bad as it gets – struggling bloggers deciding to follow *their own* advice.
Now, if you have struggled and failed as terribly as me over my lean years, you know exactly what I mean.
I failed like mad with my blog but ignored advice from established, seasoned pro bloggers.
Instead, I continued to follow my own failing, flawed advice.
How stupid, right?
I feigned dingbat ignorance when I
- clung to my old school crappy theme,
- posted 35 times daily to my old blog (I am not kidding),
- did nothing offsite,
- refused to blog comment, and
- refused to guest post.
But I eventually wised up to the level of a sea sponge.
So I followed advice from struggling bloggers.
Our own little crew of folks running into brick walls just when it seemed like we would have some success.
Then I hopped onto some “make money online” forums and followed the advice of top earning internet marketers who did *not* specialize in pro blogging.
I saw little success with this approach, because these folks were not blogging specialists.
I Changed My Energy
Finally, I became so entirely disgusted with my years of failure, struggles and nightmares that I broke down and decided to follow the advice of blogging specialists like Zac Johnson and Darren Rowse.
I learned from these icons.
Yes, I changed my energy, diving into my fears and doing more things from a place of love and fun.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
And I sought out practical tips from these blogging specialists, learned how to blog, followed the practical tips and saw success.
I had turned things around by simply changing my energy.
- I made more money than I ever had.
- I drove more traffic than I ever had driven during my entire blogging career.
- I began to appear on some of the most famous blogs in the world.
What was the turning point?
I stopped following the advice of successful folks who were not blogging specialists.
And I ignored advice from struggling bloggers.
Most of all, I stopped following my own stupid blogging advice and decided to go to the top.
And as I started to learn from the top bloggers on earth, I naturally began to replicate their success.
Practical Advice
Pick 1 or 2 blogging specialists from your niche.
These are folks who know your niche inside-out.
Immerse yourself in their works.
Hire them to coach you.
Go ahead, do it.
The money you spend can save you years of struggling.
- Buy their eBooks.
- Buy their courses.
- Follow every one of their blog posts.
- Immerse yourself in their work.
- Dive into their studies.
The handful of top, successful, specialist professional bloggers in your niche will teach you how to succeed.
And they’ll teach you to do it in months and years versus you trying to do it on your own, having a terrible time of it.
Comment on their blogs.
- Facebook Share,
- Retweet,
- Google Plus share, and
- LinkedIn share their blog posts.
Learn from mentors.
Make friends.
Succeed.
1 Critical Qualifier
Do not just follow any successful blogger.
Seek out specialists who know how to tackle your blogging problems.
You need to follow a few bloggers specifically from your blogging niche.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
These folks have the specific expertise, clear know-how and ample experience tailor made for your blogging problems.
If you need blogging advice, follow
- Darren,
- Zac,
- this blog’s owner Donna Merrill.
- Matthew Loomis or
- swing by my blog.
We will hook you up!
And if you need internet marketing advice, stop by David Boozer’s blog.
One of the easiest ways to raise yourself sky high in the blogosphere is to make friends in high places.
These blogging big dawgs and dawgettes will
- inspire you,
- support you,
- promote you,
- endorse you,
- feature you, and
- give you exposure that you couldn’t get on your own.
I am still humbled by the fact that highly successful and established bloggers and internet marketers…
- promote me,
- feature me,
- endorse me, and either
- hire me to coach them, or
- buy my products and eBooks.
But none of this would have ever happened if I did not…
- learn from these pros,
- help these pros,
- endorse these pros,
- buy these pro’s products, and
- build a friendship with these pros.
If you are struggling terribly with your blog, and feel completely frustrated, you may be following bad advice.
It may be time to rethink your strategy.
Stop doing what obviously doesn’t work.
Start doing what does work by following a few top bloggers in your niche.
- Learn from them.
- Read their posts.
- Take notes.
- Buy their products.
- Hire them to coach you.
Correct the agonizing mistake of failing to reach out to blogging pros.
Accelerate your blogging success.
Your Turn
Have you made this 1 terribly crippling mistake in the past?
Or are you making this error now?
What blogging pros from your niche are you following?
I’d like to hear from you in the comments section below.
I also appreciate you sharing this article with your friends and followers via your favorite social media sites.

Donna and Ryan, I am back here after a long time and found this interesting post.
We need to keep learning from other bloggers and there are few bloggers who just guide others in a best way.
By connecting with other bloggers, we not only learn, but we also know the things we need to improve upon for getting the best result.
Blogging needs hard work and making money is possible only by working hard and learning from others.

Hi Ryan and Dona,
It’s monday already and I hope you two great bloggers had a great weekend. Yup, big post aligned up there.
For sometime now I’ve known Ryan, the Blogging From Paradise guy. He’s been leading and helping new bloggers up the blogging game. He’s been doing this for years and has become a master of his craft.
Ryan, having you as a guest on Dona’s blog is a great catch. I fell in love with the line: One of the easiest ways to raise yourself sky high in the blogosphere is to make friends in high places. This is simply the truth. Truth be told, but, just as it’s been said – to be successful you need to follow the successful. Mistakes made, lessons learn. It’s time to act.
Thanks for Sharing, Ryan.

Hi Ryan and Donna
So nice to see a guest post by Ryan today.
Super opening line there.
I wasn’t aware you were into body building.
A similar story took me years to admit I didn’t know what I was doing with blogging, years!!
Finally, I did follow the advice of some who did know that the heck they were doing!
I just spent the past 2 hrs visiting your site, Ryan -thanks for the free course, btw. Visited Matthew Loomis and David Boozer’s sites. Wonderful bloggers. Signed up for their newsletters as well.
This is why it takes me hours to do my PAC commenting with Donna and our other members. I just love blogging and I get lost in it.

Excellent post Ryan and Donna. I am nowhere near an expert in blogging and the suggestions here hit me right on. I think you have to learn from the experts that “walk the talk” to guide you. There’s a lot of people out there that give suggestions, or advice and it’s not great. So thanks for a great read. Hi Donna and Ryan,
You really hit a chord with me. I have fallen victim to following the wrong people too often. It is really important to look at a person’s business model before blindly following their advice. Often it is much different than your own.
And listening to your own “great” advice … that is a huge rabbit hole.
Excellent article!
Hi Neena,
Yes it’s important to follow somebody and see carefully what they’re doing.
A big mistake I see is that people judge on mentor on the basis of how much money they’ve made.
In fact they all try to compete by telling you they made tons of money.
I don’t find that nearly as important as finding someone that just knows how to teach and is really passionate about sharing that.

Hi Donna,
Nice Post!
Building relationships with bloggers and influencers in your industry is an absolute must, these days. Instead of trying to beat them, which could take months (if not years), help them, so that they can help you.
You see, that’s the key to these relationship.
You help them out, and then down the line, they help you. This can be through sharing content, guest posting, backlinks, product promotions, etc.
I will tweet your post.
Thanks a lot for sharing.
Hi Manish
I like that idea.
Don’t try to beat them just join them and you both Prosper.
That becomes much more like a joint venture than competition.
And it always works out best for everyone that way.

Hey Donna and Ryan,
When it comes to the blogging world you have to be careful who you follow and take advice from.
I can remember when i first started I was trying to figure out who to follow. It was like I was interviewing those who would qualify despite the fact that I didn’t really have a clue on who to look for.
Back then it was difficult since everyone was practicing black hat SEO and they would publish just about anything and still get high rank which as a result in them getting a lot of traffic.
Things have changed and I look for those who gives the most quality and are pretty much everyone within my niche. This is Ryan was ignoring doing guest posts, blog commenting and offline type work. You literally want to build trust by doing these types of activities. This will help you build a great reputation as someone your target audience will want to connect with and buy from!
Thanks for sharing Ryan!

I think if you have a blog and want to make money from it, then your advice is well taken. You’ve got to connect with other bloggers, write tons of bylined articles and leave comments on blogs — but you also need to promote yourself outside of the world of bloggers. The first step, though, is to know what you’re selling and if there is a market for your services or products.

Promoting yourself is key Jeannette and beyond that, and more importantly, promoting other bloggers way more than you promote yourself has been a supreme key to my success and Donna’s success. Hi Ryan and Donna. I have to agree. Really, the same thing goes for anything that you want to do. You learn from the people who are already successful doing what you want to do.
For some reason people don’t think that applies when you are self-employed. I see the same thing in network marketing. All these people who have never made a penny in their own business can tell you everything you need to know to earn 6 figures in yours. That’s just crazy!
Find the people who are successfully doing what you want to do and model them, and that’s easier to do if you reach out.
Excellent advice Ryan.

Indeed, Ryan’s advice here is right on the money! One cannot choose to follow another person that made a bazillion dollars and think all they have to do is replicate what that person has done. It is impossible. Why? Because we are all unique humans and do things in our own ways. There is no way to fake it till you make it.
On a more positive note, There are plenty of people to resonate with that will tell you the truth like Ryan does.

Hi Donna and Ryan,
I agree, good to see you making another post on Donna’s blog. My story is pretty much like Cori’s above. For so long I followed the wrong people and now that I know the ones I should be following and learning from (such as Donna Merrill and Ryan BIddulph) things are becoming more clear to me. I avidly follow both of you for blogging knowledge and searching for writers (specifically novel writers) that I can follow and learn from too.
Thanks again to you both for sharing the great information that you do.
Hi Monna,
Good to know things are becoming clear to you. Sometimes we can get caught up following bloggers and it is not fruitful for us. We all have to learn something every day and put it into action.
I just love the way you write…keep on going girl.

Sure thing Monna. I was in the same boat when new to blogging. Most of us are, really. We follow folks – especially us old skool folks – who appeared on page 1 of Google or paid to rank high, back in the days the system could be gamed easily. These folks weren’t always the best mentors. Thank goodness Google changed things for the better.

The path really does get clearer when we follow pros, right Monna. For me, it was the folks mentioned, Adrienne, Donna, all the established biggies.

Hi Donna and Ryan!
I hope you both had a great weekend! 🙂
It’s great to see you here on Donna’s blog sharing your words of wisdom, Ryan.
When I started blogging I followed the wrong bloggers – I learned nothing from them. It was when I connected with Lisa Sicard that I connected with Donna and Adrienne Smith. That’s when I learned how to blog the right way.
And you’re right Ryan, these ladies – and most recently you – have been so helpful. You all have been very helpful any time I’ve reached out for help and are very supportive and encouraging. And to this day, I’m still learning from you and Donna. I for one I’m so glad our paths crossed. 🙂
I’ve never meet Darren, Zac and Matthew but I’ll be sure to stop by and say hello.
Great post as always Ryan!
I hope you both have a great week!

That’s pretty much a winning trio of bloggers right there Cori 😉 Ditto on all 3. Adrienne, Donna and Lisa have been shining examples for me. Fabulous folks to follow, to learn from and to mimic so we do blogging right.

Hi Ryan, and good to see you at Donna’s blog 🙂
You are right about all that you mentioned! It’s a great lesson to learn, especially for new bloggers, who tend to follow anyone and everyone – only to realize later that they were treading the wrong path. They invest on a lot of things that they don’t need or which doesn’t really help them.
Yes, follow a few and those who you know will make a difference, being in your niche, which is essential. And, you sure have come a long way, Ryan!! See you guest posting ALL over nowadays – way to go, my friend 🙂
Thanks for sharing. Have a nice week ahead, both of you 🙂

It sure helps to have that “advice filter” on Harleena so we can follow yours and Donna’s shining examples.

Hi Ryan,
I want to thank you so very much for being a guest on my blog. You are amazing and teach bloggers so well.
This article says it all especially when you wrote ” as I started to learn from the top bloggers on earth, I naturally began to replicate their success.” That is the key!
Thanks again!
