Being an Internet Marketer, you must live on a schedule to get things done. Internet Marketing through Social Media can be done at practically no cost at all, but it requires steadfast effort. In paid media, like pay per click, you must budget your money.
The Social Media approach may be free, but you must still budget your time. You may not be spending money, but you must spend time building relationships online, learning, writing, teaching, and working on projects. You need to write down on a schedule and really stick to it.
Otherwise, you find yourself “overwhelmed” or feeling like giving up. This is why such a small percentage of people are able to turn their Internet Business into a successful one. In fact, only 3 out of every 100 people succeed.
Take a look at the leaders in the industry of Internet Marketing. They are not slackers. You won’t find them floundering or being overwhelmed. Why? Because they have a schedule to stick to and they act upon it. I’ve been watching lots of people grow in this industry in the past year and have witnessed that the ones who do not give up and are on a schedule. The consistent action-takers are the ones that are succeeding.
Let’s consider this: we all have our personal lives to contend with. That’s part of the schedule too. We balance out our children, parents, etc. along with our business.
But what happens when Life Throws You A Curve Ball?
Some one passes away. A family member is ill and needs your attention. You may have to move to a new home. You may have to care take an elder person. You might become ill. These are just a few examples.
This happened to me last week. Sudden changes in my life put a stop to what I was doing in my business. The first knee-jerk reaction was ANXIETY! To relieve anxiety, I had to come to terms that there are times when I have everything on schedule. I am going about my day with my golden list (top priorities) of things to do and “life” things to do.
Then all of a sudden…BAM! A family member needs help. My off-line business explodes. There is a leak in the ceiling. You know, those simple curve balls in life that take you away from the routine that you MUST adhere to if you are going to succeed.
For me, it turned into ANXIETY! I immediately went to the place of “Should-ing” on myself. I forgot to practice what I preach. “Don’t Should on yourself” I tell my clients all the time! I found myself doing the same thing.
With anxiety comes the feeling of doom. How can I keep up with my Internet Marketing daily routine when everything in my life stopped me cold in my tracks for 5 days. I had the feeling of drowning. Then I stopped. I recognized that there is a another reality I was neglecting. Those times when things snatch you from cyber-space and ground you in the 3-dimensional world.
So I made time for it. I did the best I could, putting all of myself into the situations that demanded my presence. I gave myself permission to do that and the anxiety lifted. The “Shoulds” lifted. I knew there was a job out there I am fully committed to but I simply had to “pause”. Was I overwhelmed? No. I just stepped aside myself and delt with the issues at hand.
Going through it was no joke but I am sure it has happened to you, too. Moral of this story: Pause is Essential from time to time. So Pause, but don’t Stop. Persevere through the obstacles. You can’t avoid them, but you can perservere. In short: Never Give Up!
Life can take you to many paces, but you must pursue what you have started and are doing. You cannot know when something will take you out of your situation, but need to know it exists and the more you give it your full attention, and fix the problem, the quicker you can get back to your passion… Internet Marketing.
Donna, What a wonderful post. I like your paragraph…Pause is Essential from time to time. So Pause, but don’t Stop. Persevere through the obstacles. You can’t avoid them, but you can perservere. In short: Never Give Up!
We all need time to do other things and take that pause in our lives like family, grandkids, gardening and the fun things in life.
It is funny how we have to give ourselves permission to do this. I wish you the best in life and enjoy your pauses.
Take Care,
Barbara
Thank you Barbara, Yes we must all pause, but not feel guilty by it. Instead, we must welcome it as part of life and enjoy that pause.
Thanks
Donna
You are so right Donna ~ Life does get in the way of our business building…and it always will! What you shared about how you dealt with it I think was the right approach. Giving yourself permission to allow to do whatever it was you were capable of doing at that time, and not beating yourself up for doing no more. There will always be life events, and its how you deal with them that makes all the difference to your success (or failure). As you stated, PAUSE, don’t STOP…excellent advice 😉
Life does get in our way Christine.
Absolutely right when you say it is how you deal with life events that makes a difference!
Hi Donna, it’s amazing how attached we get to our laptops/computers isn’t it? I notice that when I go away to visit with my young grand-children. It’s like I have withdrawal symptoms for the first day or 2, then I get used to not using it for 8 hours a day. Then…. it’s a challenge to get back into it again.
I hope everything goes okay for you Dona! Regards from Julieanne
Thank you Mary Lou. As Frank Sinatra says in a song “I just pick myself up and get back in the race….that’s Life!”
There is nowhere to go but up when you are in a hole. Well, that is my perspective.
Blessings,
Donna

Hi Donna,
Oh, those dreaded “shoulds”! They are momentum killers, aren’t they? And they come into our lives when we need them LEAST! 🙂
That being said, life IS going to throw us curve balls from time to time. That is a given. How we choose to respond to those curve balls is where our true power lies. Even the greatest entrepreneurs of all time — massively successful people — are thrown off course. Life rattles our cages for a reason. We may not understand the reason at the time, but in hindsight, if we are living in awareness, we can see the value of the curve balls that have come our way.
You model the truth, Donna. None of us always practices what we preach. That is what makes us human. I admire you for being transparent and for showing your readers that it’s okay to get rattled once in awhile. You just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get on with things. 🙂

Really spot on and timely message, Donna! You are that woman. There is nothing like a word in season! Hi Donna,
Your timing on this post fits perfectly with my recent experiences. I agonized for a time, with the ‘shoulds’ but decided (the same as you) that my life commitments are every bit as important as my online commitments….. so it’s a matter of biting the bullet and doing what you need to do. It’s a reality that we all have to deal with.
The anxiety lifted once I’d made this decision.
Great post Donna, thanks for sharing.

Donna,
Your article is very timely for me. Among other distractions this past week, my computer was put in the repair shop. My anxiety has been at an all time high. I have been using other computers as the owners allow available time. Thus I not only have anxiety about performing my tasks, I also worry that I am causing inconvenience for my family and friends.
Today I will take time to pause and reflect. This situation will soon pass and I will be back to normal.
Hey John, Everything happens for a reason. There are no accidents! Maybe it is a time for you to reflect. Going into a different space and also coming up with a new brainstorm.
My curve ball this week lead me into a path of prosperity offline.
Regards,
Donna
Excellent post! And I’m not just saying that. I KNOW exactly how you feel…that feeling of ‘DOOM’! (It’s funny, when I look back on the moment, how I really did overreact in my terror…not so funny when your in it…feels very real.) You’ve spoken volumes of wisdom in this entry and I appreciate it very much. It’s comforting somehow to know we’re not alone in our human experiences, that there’s people who understand and uplift us, as you have done, with your encouragement and candid honesty.
Thank you Donna…very timely post for me.

(blush) Thanks Kim! One of the strategies in this business is DEALING with those curve balls. Yes, I get the doom and gloom feeling sometimes, but don’t allow it to ruin my day.
This curve ball took me away but lead me to a greener pasture.
Great stuff came out of it.
Thanks Kim

Pause but don’t stop. Basically that’s what I try to follow. But I think your best advice is when you say “give yourself permission to pause” and basically give fully to the demand at hand. I tend to pause, work on the “curve ball” all the while still thinking of how I can get back to my projects. I don’t think that’s super healthy but I have this lifetime habit of being a one-track minder (my father’s description of me). Thanks pausing to write about pausing in the best possible way. Sometime in my life, I’d like to make the kind of accommodation you described so well.

Thanks Richard,
I love the way you put that, also Don Enk’s reply was great.
In the game of baseball, we do have to pause and take a break like pitchers do. We sometimes have to sit in the dug out and re-establish our strategies. I’m not a sports fan, except for baseball, that teaches us the game of life. I have been a one-track minder but have learned the lesson of pausing.
The curve ball I got hit in the head with recently opened up such great opportunities offline.

Donna

Donna,
I love baseball! But like baseball…a curve ball can catch you off guard and you can miss. However, if you’re really present the curve ball can be hit out of the park. The game of baseball calls for continuous adjustments. Little moves here and there but the manager and players are in the game and the game is always moving…always changing.
And, so is life. When we least expect it we get that curve ball. Sometimes, that curve ball is more important than whatever you’re doing. It takes priority and everything else goes on the back burner. However, that curve ball sometimes opens a new door of opportunity that you least expected and therein lies the gold in the silver lining.
Thanks for sharing your story.

You said it Don! I love baseball too and the analogy is keeping in the game. My particular curve ball did take me to a fabulous opportunity. Even though it took me off the course of the “game” I was playing, life is like a baseball game. There is so much we must pay attention to and so many different strategies. That’s why I love the game and also the game of life!
Blessings,
Donna

Hi Donna,
Life happens! If only we could control everything, but we can’t. And it’s all about how we ride the waves, isn’t it.
I love what you say about not “shoulding on yourself.” I can’t stand the “should” world. When I choose not to use it, I’m so much kinder on myself, and everyone else 🙂
Great advice – just do your best.
Thank you,
Tricia.

I tell all my clients that phrase Tricia: “Never Should On Yourself!” You have heard the shoulda, coulda, woulda, and that is just leading us backwards. Those are powerful words to keep us from moving forward. Thanks for stopping by.

Donna,
Such sound, grounded advice. Life can throw you many a curve ball, taking president over everything else. But knowing how to decide your priorities and moving forward on those are exactly right on. You’re not super woman, yet you can accomplish your goals by doing what you can to gather back up the steam.
Glad you’re back on track!

Hey Val, thanks for stopping by. My problem is I have always been superwoman, but I’m tossing that costume away. Life shows us so many lessons when we pay attention. When my curve ball came, I felt like I was being swept away by a tornado, hanging on for life to my laptop. Silly isn’t it? BUT….several doors have opened offline. Moral of the story: Pay attention. lol
