Understanding how to connect with your blog audience can propel your blog into a profitable business.
It’s never enough to have a great blog, or to write stellar blog posts.
In order to build a solid online business, you need to connect with your blog audience.
Otherwise, it’s like having a television show on some obscure, local cable network that nobody ever heard of.
Or like having a YouTube channel with hundreds of videos that nobody watches.
Creating great content is a big job, especially when you do it consistently.
That is the job of a blogger.
But your business as a blogger, is to connect with your blog audience.
That’s how all your great content takes on a life.
What Is Your Message?
The basic communication model involves two people… a sender and a receiver.
Think of yourself on the telephone.
When you “dial the phone” (old school, haha), then you are the sender.
Let’s say you are talking to a friend, who answers the phone when it rings.
Your friend is the receiver.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
But what will you tell your friend?
You must have a message that you think will be interesting.
Otherwise, they’ll just hang up on you.
It’s not enough that you have a message, and you have someone to listen to you.
Your message has to be interesting enough that the other person will want to stay “on the line”… or be involved in the conversation.
So before you go out and try to develop an audience and place a bunch of ads to drive traffic to your blog, be very clear on what your message is.
You need to be very clear for yourself.
But you also need to be very clear for your audience.
If your audience does not get a clear sense that you and your blog have a message that they want to hear, then they’ll simply click away.
Result: the dreaded bounce.
Related: 13 Ways To Reduce Your Bounce Rate (Neil Patel)
Who Is Your Audience?
Once you have a clear message for your blog, then you have to decide who your audience is.
Who wants to hear what you have to say?
Usually, your audience is the people who want to have a specific problem or set of problems solved.
Your message resonates with them because it promises to solve that problem.
So now, they are all ears.
Your message promises a solution to their problem, so now they want to hear it.
How To Connect With Your Blog Audience
Now, you have to actually deliver your message.
This is what I mean when I say “connect with your blog audience.”
Your message is delivered as some type of content.
That content can take many forms.
For most bloggers, it means a blog post.
But it can also mean videos, infographics or other pieces of content.
To connect with your blog audience, you need to find ways to deliver that content to them.
Here are a few.
Your Blog
I guess it almost goes without saying that your blog posts are your main form of content.
But so many bloggers get caught up in churning out their blog posts, that they get trapped in their private little “blogging bubble.”
They forget that there are other ways to get their message out.
There are other ways to deliver content to your target audience.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
And every different way that you use will get your message delivered to different segments of your audience.
So here are some great ways to reach your audience outside of your blog.
Social Media
I often refer to social media blogging platforms as your “Other Blogs.”
Here’s how it works.
Write a blog post that is somehow core to your message.
Let’s say your message is “people need a home exercise program to stay healthy.”
Your entire blog is a collection of articles that deliver that message.
Your articles may even include links to products that support a home exercise program.
Each of those blog posts is core to your message.
That means they are just another way of expressing your message.
They support
- whatever you’re trying to do,
- the thing you’re trying to help people to understand, and
- that Core Message that you’re basing your entire blogging business on.
Now, you need to take those core messages and put them in places other than your blog.
Social media gives you the perfect opportunity.
Why?
Because social media sites are where you’ll find the biggest and most targeted audience for your message.
So, after you write a blog post, you can repurpose it… rewrite it slightly… then publish it again in the form of articles for social media sites like…
- Medium
- Quora
Embed your blog links in your social media articles.
My Story
A while back I was promoting a new digital course that I had put together.
I had a sales page and had written several articles linking back to that landing page.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
Of course, I did all the standard things like promote on social media postings.
I even ran a few paid ads, but things were going rather slowly with it.
I then started writing some LinkedIn articles linking to the sales page.
Read more about… How To Use LinkedIn Pulse To Drive Traffic and Subscribers To Your Blog (Brian Lang, via Blogging Wizard)
Almost immediately, I started getting prospects, buyers and clients.
It really helps to promote natively like this.
Your audience will be anxious to read your articles, not your sales pages.
So write articles they are interested in.
Then, embed links to your sales pages within those articles.
Just make sure that the content of the article flows naturally into your offer.
Then you have started to connect with your blog audience in a way that will really boost your business while it promotes your blog.
Remember, people will continue reading your articles for days, weeks, even months after you published them.
So much better than a social media status update or paid ad.
They vanish the moment they’re published, right?

Ebooks
Writing an ebook is another great way to connect with your blog audience.
Again, think of what your message is.
Put it together in an ebook.
Now, start promoting that ebook in places where your blog audience is likely to see it.
I know a lot of my clients get really hung up on the idea of writing an ebook.
They want to schedule it for 6 months down the road.
Sometimes a year.
It keeps getting put off and just never gets done at all.
Special: FREE Guide… 4 Things I Did To Build My Blog Using Only Free Traffic
If you’ve struggled with this, then it’s time to get over it.
Writing an ebook is not much more difficult than writing a blog post.
In fact, many ebooks simply consist of a collection of several blog posts.
The main thing is to get your ebook out there… with embedded links back to your blog.
Make sure it includes your core message so that it will attract and appeal to your target audience.
You can easily put together multiple ebooks over a short span of time.
You can even do this with Kindle books, although I’ve never tried that.
The point is to put the content together and pump it out on a consistent basis.
Ryan Biddulph is a master at this (see Blogging from Paradise).
Ebooks last forever.
Once they are done, they are digital assets you can use in so many ways.
This will go a long way in helping you to connect with your blog audience on a continual basis.

Videos
When I first started blogging, I found it a bit difficult to distinguish myself from all the other bloggers.
Then I started doing videos.
Suddenly, people started connecting with me.
They started seeing who I was.
And they liked the idea that I was actually having a conversation with them.
I think there’s no better way to connect with your audience than through video.
It made a big difference in the growth of my blog business.
Just start making some videos on topics related to your core message.
Do it on a regular and consistent basis just as you do with your blog posts.
Build a portfolio of videos than you can always fall back on when you want to share your core message.
Related: How to Magically Transform Your Boring Blog Using These 3 Types of Videos (Bree Brouwer, via Smart Blogger)
Link your videos back to your blog.
You can always share your videos on social posts.
Not just new videos, but even ones that you did months or even years ago.
If they convey your core message, keep using them when they fit the conversation.
You can link to them on forums, in Facebook groups or anywhere else that your audience hangs out.
Believe me, this is one of the best ways to immediately, and meaningfully, connect with your blog audience.

Hi Donna,
You have definitely shared some great ideas to connect with our audience. And you also shared some great suggestions for promoting our products or offers. I love your LinkedIn story. I’ll have to put that down on my business plan for 2018!
I actually have an eBook I’ve written for new bloggers. It was finished a couple of months ago but I never got around to publishing it. All I need is the cover image and it’s ready to go. That’s also part of my 2018 plan – to finially get it published. 🙂

As always, you’ve shared some great stuff here Donna! Thanks for sharing and you know I’m passing this along!

Building relationships through your blog is such an important aspect of writing. Enticing them into your world and bringing their passions to life is how you captivate your audience.
I believe interactive relationships on the blog can be somewhat behind the scenes as well as actively involved commenters. Email messages from readers who receive the blog in their inbox mean a lot, but I’ve been really encouraging interaction on the blog through comments. I would really like more interaction.
I guess, it comes with time.

Hi Donna,
Nice tips and ideas here to connect with your blog audience.
It’s been a while over here and it’s been wonderful being here. You blogging strategy is almost the best trying to point out what will work for bloggers.
It’s very factoid to believe that blog without readers is a YouTube channel with 100 videos without viewers.
I spend more time on my blog watching how my audience are doing. I monitor their activities ranging from the country of the visitor, page or anything and to say it if I can easily get them to subscribe to my list, I will always send them all freebies because they mean a lot to me. Sometimes you just have to understand that your co-bloggers are your best audience. this is what I think some time to keep it more connected because most passerby readers are not likely to keep a long-term audience relationship.
Thanks for this wonderful tips

Hi Donna,
A wonderful post! You are so right, know what your readers want to hear. Understanding who your audience is and know what they’re problems are is important. If your message resonates with them then you can help solve the problems that they are having because you have demonstrated that you know all about that topic, so they want to hear what you have to say.
I veered off into the Linkedin article but had a problem finding that Pulse link. Hmm Maybe Canadians don’t get it?

Hi Donna,
How right you are about using video to connect with your blog audience. It’s something I’ve been looking at already actually as I do understand the power of using video. I don’t know if I’ll be putting many videos of myself up but I will end up making some for courses and guides etc. I also plan on using them for landing pages and stuff.
I know many businesses who make lots of Youtube videos but don’t really utilize them effectively. I also know many companies who has great websites/blog sites but don’t use video! As a digital marketing specialist my job is to teach them all the ins and outs of using video on their sites.
As always Donna a great read, thank you!

Hi Richard,
A lot of people do a lot of things online that they’re not really sure why or how to optimize.
Videos are one of those things.
Like you said, a lot of bloggers don’t use video at all.
I think the best way to use videos on your blog is to make them sort of a content enhancer.
So whatever your blog is about, try to give a little bit more insight or personality via your embedded video.

Hi Elise,
I haven’t tried Medium, myself, but I know a lot of people like it.
Anytime you’re doing this kind of cross-blogging or some people call it mini blogging, a good way to monitor its value is to embed a trackable link inside of your article.
Then you can see how many people are clicking on that link and you will know how much traffic you’re getting from Medium or any other blog site.
A lot of people try a lot of different things.
But without link tracking, you never really know.
You’re always just guessing.

Main reason I dig it is because we are helping folks do blogging right, who help other folks do blogging right.
You are one of the pros’s pros at connecting with your readers Donna. A master, really, because you use video, blog posts, blog comments and social media to strengthen bonds, and with these powerful bonds those connections get stronger, and with those stronger connections, the views and sales and comments keep growing. Exponentially, over time.
I also see such lightning fast engagement here; you publish a post and those comments and social shares flow in freely. I saw the same thing with Adrienne Smith’s blog and also with Janice Wald’s blog too. Such is the power of building a tribe of loyal readers who have a strong connection with you.

Awesome post Donna! I’ve thought about publishing articles on LinkedIn but because the focus there is on “business” I’ve shied away from it in favor of other platforms. Maybe it’s time to at least give it a try. I find Medium, in particular, is a good place for personal growth articles. I also like your point about eBooks and wish I had a dollar (no, make that $5) for every person I know who has talked about publishing a book but never done anything. It really is worth the effort not only in terms of exposure but it forces you to get real about the message you’re trying to convey to your audience. Thanks for the inspiration!

Hi Marquita,
Excellent point about ebooks.
If you do your ebook with the right Focus … you really will have to get clear on (1) your big message and (2) who your target audience is.
These are two things that are so important, but so many people just don’t get a good handle on.
It’s unfortunate, because if you miss on this… it undermines everything else you do.
Also, yes, I really suggest that you give LinkedIn Pulse a whirl.
I think you’ll find some great and very responsive audiences there.

Thanks for this post. I have tried to narrow down my target audience so I know who I am writing and talk to. I definitely need to use more videos, thanks for reminding me. Your posts are always so helpful, thanks again.
Hi Sharon,
A good way to get to know your target audience is to do some videos on Facebook and see who they are attracting.
You can even put them in the form of ads and get feedback on how long people are watching them.
So even a video of a minute or 2 will tell you whether or not people are interested enough in what you’re doing.
Facebook allows you to see how long people stay on your video ads.
You can build a “custom audience” from people who show interest, and then retarget them with product/service ads etc.
Try it out and let me know how it works out.

Hey Donna,
Such an amazing tips here.. You are absolutely right, Social media gives us some massive opportunities in order to connect with people. Now a days, I spend more time on twitter and found some great peoples and they are great inspiration.
There are many people who wonder why some blogs attract a lot of readers. There is some reason behind that, I think one of the most imperative is that good blogs are written by admired people who know how to attract people, how to connect with them.
There is no doubt that content is most important thing when you are starting a blog, but apart from that we should make great efforts to connect with our audience. A blog is really a form of a conversion between you and your readers.
I especially like to read about ebook that you have mentioned in your post. Such informative article. Thank you Donna for sharing.

Hi Maria,
So true that social media gives us so many great opportunities for connecting with our audience.
This was practically impossible a few years ago.
All you could hope for was to get them on your email list and maybe they’d get to know you a bit like that.
Now with video, live stream and social media… there are so many ways to connect to your audience in a real and personal way.
If you want to be a “stand out” blogger, you’ve just got to do it.
On another note, I’m so glad you’re enjoying my ebook.

Hi Donna,
The read’s worth it.
Connecting with ones blog audience seems insignificant yet the growth of ones blog depends basically on it as connecting with other bloggers does.
Over the years it is believed that Content is king (depending on ones point of view).
In this case (ie connecting with blog audience) I still think content is king.
Even if you write the best post titles, ebooks etc. Once someone lands on your blog and sees a crap of a content, they’re off.
Ryan Biddulph said one way to connect with your audience is by being yourself and I agree with him.
Trying to get over professionalism and being real is the key.
Videos (like you said) and podcasts works too.
My personal experience:
I blog about “Blogging” so I joined many blogging groups on Facebook.
Everyday I’d ask the member to drop their blogging problems so I can help.
After the help, I refer them to my blog and this has made my audience know me personal.
That’s thd power of social media (as you earlier said)
Thanks and do have a nice day.
-Golden
Hi Golden,
Good advice my friend.
Get over professionalism.
Be yourself and start connecting with your audience.
Be real and be personable.
And of course be helpful.
I love how you’re taking advantage of Facebook groups to connect with folks.
Sweet strategy 🙂
Keep up the great work.

Hey Donna,
Having a strong bond with your audience is the best thing to have. I like how you elaborated with an example of a telephone. Your blog is the primary location to take over.
Share something valuable and connect with the people who comment. I focus on only two social media platforms which are bringing the glory.
Thanks for bringing this up.
~Ravi
Hi Ravi,
Good to see you’re focusing on only two social media platforms.
Susan just said the same thing in her comment.
I think one of the big problems bloggers have is trying to do it all.
Every single social medium is something they feel they have to master.
You just can’t do it all.
And if you try to automate it, then it doesn’t come across as genuine.
If you’re not being genuine… then people won’t trust you.
It’s really that simple.
Basic stuff.
Just like picking up the phone and having a conversation.
Keep it real.
Don’t overcomplicate things.

Hi Donna,
Learning how to connect with your audience is key to growing your blog. I’ve personally been learning how to use Pinterest and YouTube to help me out. I’ve also gone back and started digging through the comments on my blog.
I want to make it a point to answer people’s questions that they took the time to ask on my blog. I think if we are actually helping people and helping them solve their problems, it will help our readers out.
I’ve written one ebook and have been planning on writing some more. You’re right, Ryan is the king when it comes to releasing ebooks. I tend to overthink it when I am getting ready to write a new ebook.
Love the tip about writing an ebook that just consists of combining several of your blog posts. Maybe I’ll sit down this week and create my third ebook.
Thanks for taking the time to share these tips have a great day 🙂
Susan
Hi Susan,
I definitely am going to check out your blog and see what you’re doing with Pinterest and YouTube.
These are two great ways to connect with your audience.
I think people know about them, but not really how to leverage them.
Maybe your new ebook that you’ve been procrastinating on can focus on one of those 2 social media sites… or even both.
That would certainly help bloggers connect better with their audience, and that’s helping the solve a really important problem in their business.
In any case, keep at it, no excuses, get it done… and all that.
Go get ‘em gal 🙂

Hi Lisa,
Funny about getting feedback from people.
I always invite people to comment on things I’ve done, or reply to my emails and I usually get a pretty decent amount of feedback.
I think it’s all a matter of how you position yourself.
If people really believe that you are going to in some way help them solve a problem or improve their lives… then they’re far more likely to respond to you.
This goes for surveys, blog posts, squeeze pages, sales pages and everything else that you throw at them.
Underlying everything is trust.
The more you connect with your audience on their terms the more they will trust you.
Then the more responsive they will be.

makig people visit to our blogs and making deal with us, but we should need to connect with them, need to know their reviews
, what is their feed back, are they facing any kind of problem and like that stuff. This helps to build a long run relationship
and they like to be given importance and love.
Its important to know that who our audience is and how we can make them listen to what have we got for them.
Indeed approaching through social media could be one of the most effective way to connect with your audience.
There are billions of people who are regulalry active on social media platforms and dropping out a correct message could
be very appealing as it can attract many people who are willing to connect with us due to the services we are offering.
E-books are love, and Ryan is the Ring master of this. Indeed he exactly knows what his people want and when he set out
his ebook, people are in a rush to get it in their hands. I have been doing research on setting out my ebook, lot is done and
still more to go,hopefully it will be ready in the coming year.
Thanks for the share.

Hi Shantanu,
You have to know what your audience wants.
The only way to do that is to go where they are and get involved in conversations with them.
Give them content on the sites that they frequent.
It’s not just about getting people back to your blog anymore.
That’s kind of old school.
Now it’s about finding an audience and putting your content in front of them… wherever they are.
An ebook in fact is a great form of content so I hope you get yours done soon.
Ryan suggests you write a certain number of words every single day.
If you stick to a schedule like that you’ll be done in no time.
Good luck with it.
