Practice makes perfect, but it can be costly.
It can eat up all your time and… well, time is money when you are running any kind of business, isn’t it?
This is why you need to continue learning.
Getting past particularly unfamiliar or difficult tasks is often called a learning curve.
The more difficult the task, the steeper the curve.
Here’s the problem
If you have to learn something, then you should just start researching, right?
But who has the time to keep navigating through one steep learning curve after another?
So, you either limit yourself to what you know…
or you have to find a way to shortcut the learning process.
I see that “shortcut” as way of creating a learning line, instead of a learning curve.
Going from point A to point B can be, after all, a straight line instead of a convoluted curve.
Once you figure out how to travel a straight line from where you are, to where you want to be (your goal)… you can get so much more accomplished.
But where do you start?
Well, today, I’m going to illustrate how you might be able to do just that.
One Blogger’s Shortcut Past The Dreaded Learning Curve
The “one blogger” in this story is me, actually.
Here’s how I developed a shortcut past a particularly dreaded learning curve I once faced.
My Dilemma
So, I had decided to create my first product.
Well, good for me!
I was pretty much an expert on the topic, so why not share it with others and expand my business?
I knew the creation of a digital product would take time and energy.
And then, what would I do with it?
I was stuck because I knew it would be a good idea to have affiliates help me promote it.
My personal email list was not enormous, so I would need affiliates to promote to their lists, too.
I had a good comprehension of how marketing works, but didn’t quite know how to go about marketing a digital information course.
So I was forced to deal with a pretty steep learning curve.
I had two things I would have to do.
One would be to read everything I could on how to get this accomplished.
Second, I would have to master the technical part, learn the lingo, and figure out the programs and software I needed in order to put this package all together.
There are a great many moving parts in putting together and packaging an info product, way beyond just creating it.
Hmm…affiliates…
I guess that’s a third thing I have to figure on doing.
I sat down and made a list of how many affiliates I knew in the business at the time.
But it only turned out to be about 10 who actually knew what they’re doing.
I knew I needed to learn how to attract more affiliates, so I started studying up on that.
Meanwhile, months flew by and the product that I was laboring so hard over was still stuck in the production phase.
There was still lots of stuff to develop, and some of it already needed to be updated or revised.
Back to the drawing board.

By now I was totally frustrated, and just wanted to give up and throw in the towel.
But wait.
There was another thing I might try.
My Turning Point
How about hiring a coach and/or mentor to help me out instead of trying to figure out everything from the bottom up.
After all, I’m not the first person in the world trying to do this.
Somebody else has probably already mastered the things that I’m struggling with.
I certainly didn’t want my fresh, clean amazing product to gather dust.
So I shopped around for a coach who teaches product creation and the whole affiliate marketing thing.
And guess what?
I found a guy that clicked with me.
I paid him his fee and we dug in.
So this was the fun part.
I had my initial conversation with this guy.
He outlined all the things I would have to do, and explained whatever “how to” details I needed to get started.
I grabbed this list and got started on it right away.
After all, I was paying this guy plenty to get through my first product experience.
But he was worth every penny because I knew his guidance would shortcut me past the learning curve and take my business to a whole new level, Whoopie!
So I went step by step with this guy.

He reviewed what I was doing each step of the way, and held me accountable to a specific production schedule.
So, for instance, I had a deadline for submitting my first sales page.
I did it even though I knew “it stinks.”
No problem.
The important thing was drafting it out.
Then he helped me re-do it, so I could see what I was doing wrong, and what I needed to do further, to make it right.
Voila… perfecto!
Then we got to a point where I had zero knowledge… how to reach affiliates in the marketplace.
I didn’t know what to do so I Skyped the guy.
He listed some pretty simple things to work on to take advantage of the whole affiliate marketing angle.
Meanwhile, I was still working on the product.
After editing a few times, I sent it to my coach…
“Nope… not good enough, yet.”
So I put some shine on it until it was perfect… or should I say, perfectly marketable 🙂

Finally, I was ready to launch my first digital info product to affiliates so that they could grab it up and send it out to their lists.
I had just completed my shortcut past the dreaded learning curve involved in getting my first product into the marketplace.
Yes, I learned a lot of stuff, but the key was that I had a coach who showed me how to apply these things specifically to my business.
Could I have figured all this out by myself?
Well, yes… if I wanted to spend a LOT more time going down dead ends, backing up, trying something else and all that.
Yes, if I had unlimited funds for buying courses to fix up one thing and patch up yet another.
Yes, if I just liked learning stuff, most of which I didn’t really need to know in order to accomplish what I wanted.
That’s the round-about, long winding road up the steep learning curve.
Instead, I chose to take the shortcut.
I had to spend some money, but this is my business.
It’s not something I do just for the fun of it.
So it’s an investment in my business, in my professional development and in my future.
You see, here’s the thing.
Spending money is what you do when you buy some cool software that you’ll probably never get around to learning, much less using.
Investing is when you put money into something that has a clearly defined end-result that is necessary to grow your business.
There’s never a problem “spending” when you know the ROI will make it more than worthwhile.
So that’s what I did.
I invested in some good coaching to shortcut the process and actually attain the goal I had set out for myself..
And it enabled me to
- go from point A to B so quickly, and
- save time as well as pointless spending on things I didn’t really need, and
- avoid a whole bunch of headaches.

To this day, when I run up against things I’m not good at, or haven’t learned yet, or just want to include in my business… I don’t hesitate to bring a coach on board to help me shortcut past the dreaded learning curve involved.
I gladly invest in coaching because it’s a sound investment in myself, and in my business.
An Unexpected Benefit
Here’s another benefit to using the coaching shortcut.
When you learn something first hand from a pro, you really learn it thoroughly.
And from a real world vs. theoretical perspective.
This kind of knowledge then goes into my own coaching business.
So, for instance, one of the things I now teach my clients is… how to create their first (or next) digital information product, and deliver it into the marketplace.
Go figure!

If you pay money and devote energy to learning from pros, where your attention and energy goes, grows. This means the money and pro energy reflects back to you as more money, in terms of increased sales, and of course your learning curve drops…..because you already learned LOL! Funny, eh?
Most bloggers spend years attempting to learn, or, picking up bad advice. Then they spend years un-learning through free smart. I always know future successful bloggers who will prosper pretty dang quickly; they drop money, buy my course, buy my eBooks or hire me to coach ’em, when they are newbie bloggers. No hesitation. They do as pros do, and succeed pretty darn quickly, cutting their learning curve in the process.

Hello Donna,
You are so point. I did mine in my own rough and tough way to get to where I am today because I didn’t have a dime to pay any coach but to be honest with you, I wasted time and money.
If I knew, I would have borrowed to hire a coach. But I didn’t know, so paid with my time. I failed over and over again but seeing the they were people already successful doing what I wanted to do, I kissed giving up bye bye. I stayed on my vision until it spoke out.
Today, I advice people to hire a coach to save their time because what I went through is not something I can even wish my worst enemy.

Thanks for sharing your story with us. I’m glad you did because it goes to show that everyone has moments like this. It’s the norm. The difference – like you pointed out is how we react.
If I could share anything with new bloggers it would be to invest in a coach, at least just once to get on the right path.
I know for a lot of folks, money is an issue. It was for me when I started. I know what it’s like to keep pushing it back and think “next month I’ll hire a coach” and three months later still nothing.
The key is to just do it. I knew I had wanted to work with Adrienne and I knew that if I made an appointment I wouldn’t want to disappoint her because I admired her so much. I wasn’t about to chicken out so there was no turning back.
Our first meeting was a free consultation. After that we discussed rates (which wasn’t as much as I initially thought) so I knew ahead of time how much I needed to gather up. I had a flower pot I wasn’t using so I started to throw my change in there. Before I knew it I had my coaching fee covered. As silly as it sounds, I still do that and call it my growth pot. Last month I invested in a couple Udemy courses to learn how to make custom child themes. 🙂
I kinda veered off topic here, LOL. What I’m trying to say is, bloggers (new and seasoned) will never know if they can afford a coach or not if they don’t take the first step. And if money is an issue, think of ways to save money because in the end it is so worth it.

As we grow here online there are so many things we need a mentor for. It goes beyond blogging and we want to share our products we create and/or services. I don’t have any doubt that when you invest money in learning something, it helps you navigate through the hurdles. I haven’t done it with the courses, but I did invest in softwares and tools from time to time just to make the workflow better. I can tell you for sure that it works.

Hi Donna,
Congrats on your product and hiring a coach who helped you achieve your goals. I think being successful online takes a lot of persistence and patience.
As you know, this isn’t my first rodeo. I’ve had several blogs, the difference between this blog and my past blogs is I know what it actually takes to be successful. Oh and I invested in a blogging course that shows me the exact steps I need to take to create a successful blog.
Of course, no blog or coach can help you if you’re not willing to put in the work. Growing a successful blogging business takes a lot of time in the beginning. But the great thing is that once you get momentum going, you won’t have to work so hard.
The problem with most people is they give up before they experience that momentum. Because we all know that it takes a lot of small ordinary tasks to get the momentum going.
Smart people understand that growing an online business is challenging. They also realize that there’s nothing wrong with hiring a coach or investing in a course that will show you what to do.
It’s better to learn from successful people than trying to learn everything by yourself.

I do agree that it is better to learn from successful people than doing it all yourself. Blogging is a business and any business requires not only persistence and patience, but investment too. If we are not willing to invest it will take a longer time…as long as one won’t give up.

Hiring a coach and working with a mentor is one of the best shortcuts to shorten the learning curve.
They will tell you exactly what you need to do and what you are currently doing wrong.
I know, and we all know, the fact that there is a lot of information and knowledge online on many topics for free. So, we can say that anyone could really learn exactly what to do in order to get results. But, you have to put it all together in the right way and in the right order. And that can take a very long time and a lot of sleepless nights.
This is why there are coaching and mentorship. We pay them for a shortcut more than the knowledge. A lot of times we might already know what we need to be doing but we just don’t know in what order and how to approach the action, and so on. A coach will give you the proven blueprint saving you so much time and headaches.

Truth be told, I never really thought about hiring a coach to learn the opposite end of affiliate marketing. I usually only see it as “me” the being the affiliate selling other people’s products versus people selling mine.
I also appreciated the fact that this as something that you had to learn. Your coach gave you deadlines, and you fulfilled them…and then you 2 worked together to make the landing page perfect. That is how it should be!

There is always help out there but I would say go to a trusted friend. Sure the gurus are great but make sure they will spend time with you on a personal level when you hire them.
I remember my first time with a “guru” and after spending 4K I couldn’t reach him for the questions I had after spending a weekend with him. Was it a wash? Not at all. I had learned a thing or two about how I wanted to coach others.

Beautiful way of putting your story and driving a huge message across. I agree getting a coach is a quick way to get results. You avoid the trial and error, time & money wasting and despondency that may come up on the way.
Though the learning process never ends, starting off with a coach lays a solid foundation. Along the line, you are going to be able to easily assimilate new things.
Many people want to do things themselves, for some reasons. Maybe they can’t afford the coaching fee or simply because they don’t know what they are getting into. Sometimes I think it’s luck to know you need a coach from the very start.
Trust me, some people get started. Then somewhere, they face very tough challenges. After having wasted time and money, they revert to floor level, now looking for a coach.
Finding the qualified coach too is another point. People with limited knowledge are out there are ‘coaching’ others. You can just imagine what the outcome would be.
You got the right coach who trained you to be one as well. So good luck in the coaching business my dear friend.

I sure wish I hired a coach when I first started blogging. I was a trial and error gal for almost two years doing everything myself. Plus getting information that really didn’t suit my needs.
By the third year online, I did hire a coach to figure out my path. Then I got into product creation….hired two more coaches, one to get the product completed on time and the other teaching me marketing strategies.
As our business grows, we need to learn new things all the time. I find it beneficial to hire a coach for these purposes.

For many decisions, it’s either about time or money. Do I spend time learning it? Or do I pay someone to get it done for me?
I used to battle away with technical things, trying to learn them rather than spend the money. I avoid tech as much as possible now.
Now, it’s just a matter of content.
I could invest in getting it written. But at the moment, I’m doing it myself.

Oh that techie stuff! I leave that to my partner to figure out because I’m all thumbs when it comes to that. Sometimes I do have to hire someone to do it, but other times, he can quickly figure it out. So I’m not all alone out here, I do have my husband that takes care of that part.
When it comes to product creation, I do hire a coach so I can get good feedback plus he or she will keep me getting things done on time.

I think you can do whatever you put your mind too. It’s a good thing you coach and share your wisdom with others who want to learn the way, the right way.
I think one thing that holds some back is the financial aspect of it. People want to learn but don’t have the funds many times. I understand you have to pay to learn, I get that but when you don’t have it, what do you do? Read as much as you can and struggle to learn?
Thankfully, there are good peeps like you and a few others that I know who coach. Learning from someone who is successful is a definite plus.
I struggle with focus lately. I’m at a turning point and not sure which way I’m going. Unless you have the time and desire to push yourself to the limit for this type of stuff, you’re not going to make it OR you’ll remain small fries. I’m cool with small fries.

Indeed, not everyone has the finances to hire a coach. This is why I blog…giving folks some information they can use and apply to their business. It may take a longer time to get things done, but it isn’t impossible.
I break down my days to devote time to my business, but always take time for me. I need to cuddle with my dogs, exercise and make my own food instead of take out. This all takes time, but I have learned discipline along the way. That was a biggie for me.

Hi Donna,
Having a coach is on my bucket list. I have been afraid to commit to it at the moment because of time, between a full time job, my blogging and my elderly father. I can barely squeeze another hour into a day.
But I do believe one must certainly spend some money on their business to grow it. One must advertise, purchase investments along the way to make their business grow and generate more income. I also believe in outsourcing which I’ve done from time to time especially with any technical aspects of my blog business. I’ve learned what can take me 10 hours can take someone else 30 minutes.
It’s a fine balance we all need to manage for sure Donna. How much time does one need to have for a coach? My dream is to have 2 and you are one of them 🙂

Creating an affiliate product is definitely a great idea.
I have met many people who want to do great things but are not ready to hire a professional. main reason is that they do not want to pay to someone else. So they waste all the time searching and doing things on their own. They like wasting the time which they can utilize to boost their blogging.

Great post as always and getting help from a mentor is one of the fastest and proven ways to get ahead online. The key here is to find the right mentor who knows what they are talking about and who have already built successful blog like yours.
You are such an amazing inspiration to so many people like me Donna as you have been consistently blogging and helping others with your work for the past few years so you definitely deserve to be a great blogging coach.
Another thing to consider is you need to work extra hard while taking help from your mentor because mentor only guides you. Ultimately you are the one who should be working on your goals, otherwise you won’t be getting any results even if you have a great mentor. Unfortunately most people who take coaching from others don’t realise this and they often blame the people who are serving them.
So if you want to become successful in your field take help from the right guy and make sure to spend extra hours in reaching your goals and that’s the only way to succeed.
